RESUMO

Insects were collected and identified from local and foreign aircraft entering Piarico International Airport, Trinidad, West Indies. Nine hundred and sixty seven specimens were collected from 592 aircraft. The specimens collected represented eight taxonomic orders and 25 families. Aedes aegypti, an important vector of dengue and urban yellow fever, and Anopheles albimanus, a non-indigenous malaria vector were among those collected. Musca domestica, the house fly, was by far the most abundant insect in the collection, accounting for over 83 percent of the total catch. The need to maintain entomological surveillance at airports and seaports was encouraged. (AU)

RESUMO

Data on 153 patients who were transported by helicopter from rural hospitals in Jamaica during the period July - December 1978, is presented. The majority of the patients transported were trauma victims. The overall mortality in this series was 26 per cent. Not all of the patients transported were critically ill; consequently, some could have been sent by road while others need not have been sent at all. The need for the referring hospital to be more selective in the type of patient transferred by helicopter is pointed out. The importance of preliminary stabilization and the continuation of resuscitative measures during transfer is emphasized. The study indicates that the JDF Air Wing is playing a useful and often vital role in patient transport in Jamaica (AU)

RESUMO

Considerable progress has been made during the last year. Aedes aegypti have been eradicated in all areas in which Aedes control measures were undertaken. Maintenance work will have to continue indefinitely. The use of DDT and a higher standard of efficiency in the field have been responsible for the progress made. It has been established that residual DDT house-spraying is cheaper and more effective than routine Aedes aegypti control methods. The Yellow Fever Service will merge with the Malaria service, under the heading "Mosquito Control Service", in 1947. A colony-wide programme of mosquito control by DDT house-spraying will be undertaken by the service, to combat malaria and filariasis, and to maintain Aedes aegypti eradication (Summary)
