RESUMO

A one-year retrospective study of paediatric emergencies seen at the Bustamante Hospital for Children for the period January 16 to December 31, 1986 is presented. Thirty-four per cent (3,918) of a total of 11,495 patients seen in the Casualty Department for 100 randomly selected days were assessed as emergencies. The most frequently seen emergencies were gastroenteritis (42.55 percent of total emergencies) followed by bronchial asthma (23.0 percent) and shortness of breath (16.51 percent). The rigid classification of emergencies by disease category needs to be reappraised (AU)

RESUMO

Guyana instituted a "find and treat" leprosy program in 1971 that made use of existing out-patient facilities and staff. The program, based on an integrated domiciliary approach to diagnosis, treatment, and examination of contacts, has proved successful. This article describes development of the program and discusses the prospects for control and eventual eradication of leprosy in Guyana (AU)

RESUMO

The data in the study shows that tuberculosis from very early years took its toll on the population as a major cause of death. It reached its peak in the late 1890's and 1900's after which it fluctuated and fell gradually until the 1950's when through the advent of chemotherapy it fell dramatically to as low as 6 per 100,000, and eventually to 0.7 per 100,000 population in 1973. It is suggested that the problem of tuberculosis infection is much less than in early years but that the problem is still not under control. Recommendations have been made as to how the disease can be controlled. (AU)
