RESUMO

OBJECTIVES. To determine the frequency of the metabolic syndrome (MS) among four subpopulations in the United States Virgin Islands and to estimate the risk for the MS that is associatd with waist circumference cutpoints among overweight and obese individuals. CONCLUSIONS. The frequency of the MS among Caribbean-born persons in the U.S. VirginIslands is comparable to the frequency of the MS among the general population on the mainland of the United States. Among Caribbean-born persons living in the U.S. Virgin Islands, those who are Hispanic blacks may have a greater risk of cardiovascular disease than do other groups (AU)

RESUMO

Hair sheep ewes (St. Croix White and Barbados Blackbelly) were used to evaluate 3 methods of estrus synchronization for use with transcervical artificial insemination (TAl). To synchronize estrus, ewes (n=18) were treated with PGF2alpha (15 mg, im) 10 d apart, with controlled internal drug release (CIDR) devices containing 300 mg progesterone for 12 d (n=18), or with intravaginal sponges containing 500 mg progesterone for 12 d (n=18). On the day of the second PGF2alpha injection or at CIDR or sponge removal, sterile rams were placed with the ewes. Jugular blood samples were collected from the ewes at 6-h intervals until the time of ovulation, and daily for 16 d after estrus (Day 0). Plasma was harvested and stored at -20 degrees C until LH, and progesterone concentrations were determined by RIA. There was no difference (P>0.10) in time to estrus among the CIDR-, PGF2 alpha- or sponge-treated ewes. All of the ewes in the CIDR group and 94.4 percent of the sponge treated ewes exhibited estrus by 36 h after ram introduction, while only 72.2 percent of PGF2alpha-treated ewes showed signs of estrus by this time (P<0.06). The time from ram introduction to ovulation was not different (P>0.10) among CIDR, PGF2alpha- or sponge-treated ewes. The time to preovulatory LH surge was similar (P>0.10) among treatment groups. Hair sheep ewes (n=23) were synchronized using PGF2alpha and bred by TAI using frozen-thawed semen 48 h after the second injection. The conception rate to TAI was 2/23 (8.7 percent) and produced 3 ram lambs. In a subsequent trial, 17 ewes were synchronized with CIDR devices and bred by TAI using frozen-thawed semen 48 h after CIDR removal, resulting in a conception rate of 52.9 percent (9/17). It is possible to synchronize estrus in hair sheep using either CIDRs, sponges or PGF2alpha. Even though there were no significant differences in the timing of ovulation or the LH surge among the treatment groups, a higher concentration rate was achieved in ewes synchronized with CIDR devices during the second trial. This may reflect an increase in the skill level of the TAI technician.(AU)

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to explore the hurricane experiences of elementary school children of St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands. Measures of effecting positive change by significantly reducing symptomatic behavior resulting from the effects of natural disasters such as Hurricane Hugo were suggested. Qualitative inquiry was utilized, and case studies of children's family situations, school context, hurricane and aftermath experiences, the effects of the hurricane on families and friends, and related issues were presented.(AU)

RESUMO

The first case of measles was reported to public health officials in Road Town in September, 1989. By mid-October, 26 probable cases of measles had been reported. At that point, CAREC was informed and immunization efforts were increased, particularly among the age-group nine months to five years of age. However, cases continued to appear, primarily in school-age children. At the end of 1989, a total of 103 cases had been reported. By the end of week fifteen (15) of 1990, over 200 cases had been reported since September 1989. School-based immunization campaigns directed at stopping transmission in older age-groups were begun in March, 1990. An epidemiologic investigation of the measles outbreak was begun on 5th April, 1990 (AU)

RESUMO

A group of 427 students on St. Thomas, Virgin Islands was studied to obtain baseline data on some anthropemetric measures, biochemical values, food habits, and educational parameter. Body weight was similar for four-to-seven-year-old students. Nine per cent of the sample appeared to be excessively stout. The mean hemoglobin and hematocrit levels exceeded "acceptable" ranges of the Ten-State Nutrition Survey. Differences were noted in the food habits of students in public vs. parochial schools and by birth place. The reasons for the differences were not determined. When comparisons were made with a previous survey of V.I. adolecents, mean intakes of the vegetable-fruit and meat groups were higher. A trend existed between poor academic achievement and low food score. The extent of the contribution of the various factors of the assessed status needs to be appraised.(AU)

RESUMO

One hundred patients with homozygous SS disease who have at sometime attended, or who are currently attending Paediatric Clinic at University Hospital of the West Indies, are reviewed . The diagnosis of SS disease has been confirmed by family study in 60 cases. In the remaining 40 cases, the haematological picture is typical of SS disease and starch gel electrophoresis has been performed in all, with measurements of haemoglobine A2 levels. The majority of patients manifest their disease within the first 2 years of life (anaemia, limb swelling, pains, jaundice). Growth rates roughly parallel the 50th percentile for boys and girls in Jamaica. Splenomegaly is a common physical finding in the early years but the incidence of splenomegaly falls off with increasing age from 73 percent in the first two years to 33 percent at age 12 years. The most frequent complication of the disease is the painful crisis. Also frequent is avascular necrosis of bone (55 patients) and pneumonia (37 patients) chiefly involving the right lower lobe. The hand-food syndrome is a particular form of avascular necrosis commonly seen in the first 2 years of life. Other complications include leg ulceration (13), aplastic crisis (10), epistaxis (9), megaloblastic change (7), severe obstructive jaundice (6), neurological disorder (5) and osteomyelitis (2) and paripism (1). Megaloblastic change occurred exclusively in the first 2 years of life and leg ulcers were not seen before age 6 years. Death occurred in 2 patients at age 2 years respectively. In neither case did autopsy reveal any anatomical cause for death (AU)

RESUMO

A total of 279 children living in the nonfluoride area in the Virgin Islands used the SnF2-ZrSiO4 prophylaxis paste which they administered to themselves under the direction and supervision of a dentist. After one year there was a 41 percent reduction in new DMF teeth and a 64 percent reduction in new DMF surfaces. It is suggested that this technique be used for producing an anticariogenic effect in school-age children on a mass treatment basis (Summary)

RESUMO

Medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) are horticultural crops with socio-economic significance in the Caribbean. People of the Caribbean maintain the tradition of making 'bush (herb) teas' as part of their daily activity. 'Bush tea' is made with a variety of herbs that are combined for their culinary and medicinal properties. Cultivating these plants complements conventional fruit and vegetable production in the Virgin Islands and enhance small-farm productivity. This study was initiated to evaluate the agronomic and economic potential of agroforestry systems involving MAPs with focus on alley cropping. Field experiments were conducted to determine yield and productivity of popular species of medicinal plants and aromatic herbs commonly used in the Virgin Islands. Medicinal plants included 'inflammation bush' (Verbesina alata), 'worrywine' (Stachytarpheta jamaicensis) and 'japana' (Eupatorium triplinerve) ... Data were collected on fresh and dry matter yield ... Results indicated yield of intercropped medicinal plants and herbs were not significantly reduced during the first harvest, but yield tended to decrease in subsequent harvest suggesting that tree-crop competition was minimal during the early establishment stage (AU)
