RESUMO

The seroprevalences of Chlamydia trachomatis and rubella IgG antibodies were measured in women with full-term deliveries [n = 198] and with abortion [n = 79] in a hospital in Baghdad city, Iraq. Positive rubella antibody titres were found in 42.9% of mothers with full-term deliveries and 34.2% with abortion. C. trachomatis infection was found in 13.6% of mothers with full-term deliveries and 6.4% with abortion, with a significant difference in mean antibody levels between the 2 groups. Routine screening for C. trachomatis and rubella is needed for pregnant women in Iraq

RESUMO

Anti-zona-pellucida autoantibodies [AZP-Ab] and anti-sperm isoantibodies [ASA] were assessed in the cervical secretions from 73 infertile Jordanian women and 41 fertile control women using latex agglutination. Significantly more women with infertility had AZP-Ab and ASA [16.4% and 8.2% respectively] compared with fertile women [9.4% and 0%], with no relation to the etiology of infertility. Using polymerase chain reaction Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum were detected in cervical secretions of 19.2% and 13.7% of infertile women, and the presence of mycoplasma was significantly correlated with the presence of AZP-Ab and ASA

RESUMO

This study evaluated the effectiveness and usefulness of vaccination against diphtheria and tetanus in different age groups in Gaza, Palestine. Blood samples were collected from 180 children aged < 12 years, 90 males and 90 females. Using ELISA methods, the efficacy of vaccination was estimated at 87.8% for diphtheria and 98.3% for tetanus. Mean serum titres varied significantly by age group: for diphtheria 0.24 IU/mL at age 2-4 years, 0.63 IU/mL at 7-8 years and 0.46 IU/mL at 11-12 years, and for tetanus 1.01 IU/mL, 2.63 IU/mL and 1.20 IU/mL respectively. The relatively low antibody titres, especially for diphtheria, suggest the need for a booster dose

RESUMO

The study aimed to determine the specificity and sensitivity of the Ortho BioVue two-column agglutination system for the detection of low concentrations of clinically significant antibodies in serum. The BioVue system was compared with the conventional tube technique [LISS-Coombs indirect antiglobulin test], and the two-stage Papenzyme test was used to resolve discrepancies between the two methods. We tested 3000 serum samples from randomly selected patients at King Hussein Medical Centre. Both the antibody screening and identification gave negative results in 2952 patients and positive results in 48 patients. We found the BioVue system to be the more sensitive technique. However, if papain enzyme-treated cells were included in the conventional tube technique when applied to antibody screening and identification, both methods would be of comparable sensitivity
