A influência do período de aleitamento materno na instalação dos hábitos de sucção não nutritivos e na ocorrência de maloclusão na dentição decídua / The outcomes of the breast-feeding period in the settlement of nonnutritive sucking habits and in the occurrence of malocclusion in primary dentition

RESUMO

Objetivo: Associar o período do aleitamento materno, a instalação dos hábitos de sucção não nutritivos e a ocorrência de maloclusões na dentição decídua. Métodos: Foram examinadas 146 crianças entre três e seis anos de idade, pertencentes a duas escolas filantrópicas, localizadas no município de Tubarão, Santa Catarina. Mediante formulário direcionado aos pais, foram coletadas informações sobre o período de aleitamento e a presença de hábitos de sucção não nutritivos. Resultados: A proporção das crianças que eram amamentadas por período de seis meses ou mais e não tinham hábitos de sucção, foi significativamente maior (p<0,0001) do que a proporção de crianças com hábitos de sucção não nutritivos por períodos de até três anos; a ausência de maloclusão nas crianças que receberam aleitamento materno por seis meses ou mais foi maior do que nas crianças com menor período de aleitamento materno (p=0,0003). Conclusão: O período de aleitamento materno afetou diretamente a instalação dos hábitos de sucção não nutritivos, pois a duração desses hábitos apresentou uma relação direta com a presença de maloclusão; a duração do aleitamento materno afetou também a presença de maloclusão; todos os indicadores de maloclusão sofreram influência dos hábitos de sucção não nutritivos. Observou-se que quanto maior o tempo de manutenção do hábito, maior a proporção de crianças em Classe II, presença de mordida cruzada posterior, mordida aberta e sobressaliência.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The purpose of the research was to associate the period of breast-feeding, settlement of non-nutritive sucking habits and the occurrence of malocclusions in complete primary dentition. Methods: One hundred and forty six (146) children aged three to six years old have been examined. They were all attending two philanthropic schools, located in the city of Tubarão, State of Santa Catarina, Brazil… Data were collected through questionnaires fulfilled by their parents about the breast-feeding period and the presence of non-nutritive sucking habits. Results: The ratio of the children that were breastfed by a period of six months or more and did not have suction habits, was significantly greater (p<0,0001) than the children ratio presenting non-nutritive sucking habits until three years old; the absence of malocclusion in the children who had been breastfed for six months or more was greater than children with less breast-feeding period (p=0,0003);Conclusion: The period of breast-feeding directly affected the settlement of non-nutritive sucking habits. The duration of non-nutritive sucking habits presented a straight relationship with the malocclusion compared to the breast-feeding period. All the malocclusion indicators suffered the influence of the non-nutritive sucking habits and it was noticed that the longer the period when the habit was present , the greater the ratio of children Class II canine relationship, as well as, presence of posterior crossbite, anterior open bite and excessive overjet.
