Objective:
The studys main goal was to investigate accidents in school from the perspective of its social determinants through research of the conceptions, beliefs, feelings and attitudes of educators regarding accidents in school, with the assumption that they are essential in prevention and reduction of lesions and damage connected to the accidents, taking into consideration that, in school, they can cause absence and academic failure, which constitutes an educational and public healthcare problem. Methods:
Interviews were made with 17 educators from 17 private schools in Belo Horizonte, regarding accidents that occurred between the 1st and 4th grades of elementary school. Their speeches were organized into large themes and categories, using Speech Analysis for interpretation of their meaning. Results andConclusions:
Four themes are presented regarding impressions and general feelings on the accidents; concepts and beliefs on them, information and feelings regarding self-competence to deal with the child that suffered the accident and reported formal training regarding prevention and care. Educators reveal stress and insecurity in dealing with the accident. Their speech on concepts and determinants for the accidents is varied, revealing the coexistence of the idea of fatality as well as predictabordability of the accident. Educators show insecurity and feelings of incompetence in dealing with accidents and lack of formal training in order to deal with them. They showed ambiguity in relation to their role in caring for the child who suffered an accident.
