OBJECTIVES: The global refugee crisis, exacerbated by the Syrian war, has placed tremendous strain on Jordan's healthcare system and infrastructure, notably impacting nurses working in refugee camps. The aim to identify factors influencing nurses' Quality of life at work (QWL) and understand their significance in crisis healthcare environments. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted in multiple healthcare facilities within Syrian refugee camps. A convenient sample of 166 nurses participated, and data were collected using the Brook's Quality of Nursing Work Life Survey. Data analysis included descriptive and inferential (one-way ANOVA) statistics. Significance level was set at 0.05. RESULTS: Nurses in this study generally reported a moderate QWL, with an average score of 152.85, indicating that their overall work experience falls into the moderate range. The study found that nurses perceived their work-life/home-life balance (mean score 25.79), work design (mean score 35.71), work context (mean score 71.37), and work world (mean score 19.96) at levels indicative of moderate satisfaction. There were no statistically significant differences in QWL among participating nurses, suggesting that factors other than demographic characteristics may play a more influential role in determining nurses' QWL in the unique context of refugee caregiving. CONCLUSION: This study underscores that working within refugee healthcare missions and recommends targeted interventions to enhance their well-being.

BACKGROUND: Pain is the most common symptom experienced by both cancer and non-cancer patients. A wide variety of barriers may hinder the optimal treatment of cancer and noncancer pain that are related to the health care system, health care providers, and patients. PURPOSE: To explore the barriers to pain management as perceived by patients with cancer and noncancer chronic diseases. METHOD: A descriptive, cross-sectional correlational design was employed to recruit a sample of 200 patients (n = 100 patients with cancer, n= 100 patients with noncancer) from two hospitals in Jordan. Patients filled out an Arabic version of Barriers Questionnaire II (ABQ-II). RESULTS: Harmful effects of medications were the greatest barrier to effective pain management, while fatalism had the lowest mean scores. Age was negatively correlated with physiological effects (r = -0.287, p < .01), communication (r = -0.263, p < .01), harmful effects (r = -0.284, p < .01), and the overall barrier score (r = -0.326, p < .01) among noncancer patients with chronic disease and (p > .05) for patients with cancer. Patients with cancer had higher mean scores (M = 2.12, SD = 0.78) in the fatalism subscale than those with noncancer chronic disease (M = 1.91, SD = 0.68), while patients with noncancer chronic disease had significantly higher mean scores (M = 2.78, SD = 0.78) in the communication subscale than patients with cancer (M = 2.49, SD = 0.65), (t = -2.899, p = .005). CONCLUSION: To improve the quality of care for patients who are in pain, it is recommended to address pain management barriers as they arise.

Nurses are at the frontline, dealing with people's most immense healthcare needs in stressful and demanding work environments. Consequently, it is essential to thoroughly examine how various coping mechanisms might affect the relationship between stress and quality of life (QOL). This study aimed to examine the mediation effect of both problem-focused coping (PFC) and emotion-focused coping (EFC) mechanisms on mitigating the effect of stress on the QOL among Jordanian nurses. A multisite cross-sectional descriptive correlational design was used in this study. An online survey was completed by 203 nurses using a convenience sampling technique between October 2023 and January 2024. The study included nurses working in different Jordanian healthcare sectors including governmental, private, and university-affiliated hospitals. Several measures were used to collect data, including questionnaires on sociodemographics, QOL, coping, and stress. Two models were hypothesized for this study. The two models were analyzed using Andrew Hayes Process Macro Model 4 for testing the mediation effects. Additionally, descriptive and correlational analyses were run prior to the main analysis. The results showed that coping significantly mediated the relationship between stress and QOL with variations between PFC and EFC. In conclusion, psychological distress symptoms were common among Jordanian nurses; psychological distress, coping, and QOL are correlating variables. Nurses' stress levels and coping modalities can predict QOL with a superior effect of PFC compared with EFC. Strategies should be put in place to improve effective coping to improve nurses' QOL. The results of this study have important implications for nursing education, practice, future research, and policy.

Background: After the COVID-19 pandemic, the online style of instruction started to replace the traditional style in Jordan. Aims: This study aims to (1) assess the nursing students' perceived obstacles to online learning in Jordan; (2) explore significant relationships between participants' characteristics and their perceived obstacles; and (3) assess for significant differences in the perceived obstacles based on participants' characteristics. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive design was utilized in this study. A convenient sample of 325 nursing students responded to a self-reported questionnaire utilizing Google Forms. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the dataset using the SPSS software. Results: The mean scores of the obstacles to online learning were 2.94 (SD = 0.95) for the academic obstacles subscale, 2.90 (SD = 0.83) for the technological obstacles subscale, and 3.25 (SD = 1.00) for the administrative obstacles subscale. Significant associations were found between participants' characteristics and perceived obstacles to online learning. For instance, the type of university was significantly associated with academic (r = -0.32, p < 0.01), technological (r = -0.21, p < 0.01), and administrative obstacles (r = -0.32, p < 0.01). Furthermore, significant differences were found in the perceived obstacles based on the participants' demographic and studentship-related characteristics. Conclusions: According to their perceptions of online learning, nursing students in Jordan face three types of obstacles: academic, technical, and administrative. Decision-makers should intervene to enhance the online learning experience by overcoming the reported obstacles.

BACKGROUND: Stress is highly prevalent among adolescents and might lead to maladaptive coping. METHODS: This cross-sectional study assessed the prevalence of stress and determined the types of coping strategies used by adolescents; and identified the predictors of stress levels among this cohort. The study recruited 1344 participants, aged 14 to 18 years, in schools. The study used the DASS-42 and the Brief COPE Inventory Scale for data collection. The findings of this study showed that more than two-thirds of adolescents suffer from stress, and moderate, severe, and extremely severe were 22.8%, 43.0%, and 16.8%, respectively. The most used coping behaviors among these adolescents were religious factors, with a Mean ± SD of (Mean 6.28 ± 1.16), followed by instrumental support (Mean 6.17 ± 1.18). The stress level has a significant negative correlation at (p < 0.001) with active coping (r = -0.183**), self-distraction (r = -0.190**), acceptance (r = -0.140**) and religion (r = -0.097**; P < 0.001). Binary logistic regression analyses revealed that the whole model had R2 (0.232); p < 0.005 and shows that those aged 15 had an odd of 0.272 to develop stress more than those at 18. Fathers' and mothers' education levels strongly influenced adolescents' stress levels. Those with an income between <500 and 500-750 Jordanian Dinars had an odds ratio of 5.241 and 3.514 of developing stress, respectively, compared to their counterparts. APPLICATION TO PRACTICE: This study highlights the significance of developing health intervention programs and counseling services for managing adolescents' psychological well-being and provides valuable insights for policymakers on addressing mental health issues.

A high success rate of corneal transplants is evident. However, there is still a lack of corneal grafts available to meet demand, largely because donors are reluctant to donate. Given their critical role in future healthcare teaching and advocacy. There has not been much research on Jordanian nursing students' perspectives on corneal donation, so it's critical to identify and eliminate any obstacles. This study aims to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of Jordanian nursing students concerning corneal donation. A cross-sectional, descriptive design was used to recruit (n = 440) nursing students from four Jordanian universities. A self-reported questionnaire was used to obtain data on knowledge and attitudes regarding corneal donation. The average age of senior nursing students was (M = 23.07, SD = 3.63) years. Varying levels of understanding were revealed amongst university students toward corneal donation items. Generally, good attitude of nursing students toward corneal donation (M = 34.1, SD = 8.1). Weak positive relationship was found between total knowledge scores and age (r = 0.141, p = 0.003) while there is no significant relationship between age and total attitude score (r = 0.031, p = 0.552). Age was found to be a significant predictor (B = 0.01, Beta = 0.12, t = 2.07, p = 0.04). Also, the educational level of fathers is a significant positive predictor (Beta = 0.128, p = 0.008) for the total attitude scores among nursing students. Limited awareness of corneal donation, highlighting the need for focused educational interventions to improve their comprehension.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent catheterization (IC) has been identified as one of the critical techniques used by spinal cord injury (SCI) patients to cope with emptying the bladder, despite several problems impeding this procedure. AIM: The study aimed accordingly to explore the lived experience of Arab male patients on IC after their SCI. DESIGN: This study was carried out by using a descriptive qualitative approach with a phenomenological analysis of data. METHODS: A qualitative study was carried out on 10 Arab male patients from the Rehabilitation Hospital at King Fahad Medical City (KFMC), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia who were utilizing intermittent catheters following SCI. The interviews were analysed using Husserl's phenomenology and the Colaizzi method of data analysis. RESULTS: Two major themes and six sub-themes were identified from exploring the patients experience. These themes are as follows: Theme 1: The Way to IC; with two sub-themes: (i) 'service provided and acceptance' and (ii) 'educational experience'; Theme 2: Lifestyle and self-adaptation; with four sub-themes: (i) 'Flexibility and freedom', (ii) 'Physical access to the community', (iii) 'Traveling' and (iv) 'Work and Social life balance'. CONCLUSION: It is evident that using an intermittent catheter among patients with SCI influenced almost all aspects of the participant's life, including their social lives and body image appearance.

OBJECTIVE: The frequency of alarms generated by monitors and other electro-medical devices is undeniably valuable but can simultaneously escalate the workload for healthcare professionals, potentially subjecting intensive care unit nurses to alarm fatigue. The aim of this study is to investigate alarm fatigue and stress levels among critical care nursing personnel. Additionally, the study aims to assess predictors for both alarm fatigue and perceived stress. METHODOLOGY: A descriptive cross-sectional study recruited 187 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurses from hospitals located in the northern and central regions of the West Bank, Palestine. Data were gathered through online surveys due to logistic concerns using the Alarm Fatigue Scale and the Perceived Stress Scale. The research was conducted between November 2023 and January 2024. RESULTS: The mean overall alarm fatigue score was 23.36 (SD = 5.57) out of 44. The study showed that 62.6% of the participating ICU nurses experience average to high degree of alarm fatigue, while 69.5% experience average to high levels of perceived stress. A significant positive Pearson correlation was found between stress and alarm fatigue (0.40, P < 0.01). Important predictors of alarm fatigue include perceived stress, nurse-to-patient ratio, gender, and years of experience, while important predictors of perceived stress include alarm fatigue, type of working shift and hospital unit. CONCLUSION: Alarm fatigue can compromise the timely intervention required to prevent adverse outcomes by causing delayed responses or missed critical alarm, which can have major ramifications for patient safety. Addressing stress is crucial for mitigating alarm fatigue and fostering a supportive work environment to ensure optimal patient care. Consequently, exploring strategies to alleviate the negative impacts of alarm fatigue on critical care nurses' stress merits further investigation in future research studies.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated an abrupt transition to online learning in nursing education, presenting unprecedented challenges. This research aims to comprehensively assess the challenges faced by nursing students during this transition, exploring key issues, recommending strategies, and analyzing their impact on student perceptions. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, the study surveyed 941 nursing students across eight Arab countries-Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, Oman, KSA, UAE, and Egypt-to ensure a representative sample and enhance external validity. Data collection involved a thorough survey covering academic, technological, and administrative challenges. Reliability analysis, descriptive statistics, and variance analysis using Kruskal -Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were conducted to examine differences between countries and sociodemographic variables. RESULTS: Descriptive statistics revealed significant demographic disparities. Single individuals in Jordan and those with lower family income in Palestine and Lebanon reported notably higher challenges. Female students in Iraq and Lebanon perceived greater challenges compared to males. Students pursuing diplomas in Jordan and bridging programs in Lebanon faced elevated difficulties. Governmental university students in Lebanon and private university students in Jordan encountered distinct challenges. Lack of available internet was particularly challenging in Jordan and Lebanon, whereas students using tablets in Lebanon and laptops in Palestine reported heightened challenges. Economic disparities, notably in family income, further hindered engagement with online learning materials. Across countries, academic challenges included managing coursework and accessing resources, exacerbated by administrative inefficiencies, especially in Palestine and Lebanon. Students in the UAE reported fewer challenges, facilitated by robust internet infrastructure and comprehensive institutional support. CONCLUSION: This study provides critical insights into the challenges faced by nursing students during the Middle East's online learning transition. Key challenges encompass technological issues, academic workload, and administrative inefficiencies, with significant disparities across countries. The findings underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions, particularly in Palestine, to enhance online learning experiences. Policymakers and educational institutions can leverage these insights to advocate for student-centric approaches and policy development aimed at improving online learning across the region.

BACKGROUND: Providing care for people with dementia incorporates a level of burden which can affect quality of life for both the caregiver and the recipient of care. This study measures the level of burden experienced by Jordanian caregivers for people with dementia and explore related predictors. METHODS: Through a cross-sectional survey, participants were invited through convenience sampling to participate in a structured interview. RESULTS: A total of 406 participants completed the survey. According to Zarit Burden Interview, the mean burden score of the sample was 26.2 (SD = 16.2). This score falls under the mild to moderate burden level. Older age of the patient, severe dementia, lower number of caregivers, if the caregiving negatively affected family relations, and if the caregiving negatively affected jobs, were significant predictors of burden. CONCLUSION: Caregivers in the current study reported no burden to a minimum burden. This result does not mean that these caregivers have no or minimal stress or that they do not have psychological needs; on the contrary, these results call for more attention to providing extra psychological and emotional support to caregivers of patients with dementia in order to decrease the burden level and maintain their efforts in caregiving. Future studies are required to discern the shape and context of unmet caregiver needs, assessment, and support.

BACKGROUND: Post-laparoscopic shoulder pain is very common after laparoscopy. One method to reduce postoperative shoulder pain is the pulmonary recruitment maneuver. It is used to reduce post-laparoscopic shoulder pain. This study utilizes a truly experimental, double-blinded, prospective randomized design to assess the effect of pulmonary recruitment maneuvers on post-laparoscopic shoulder pain after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. METHODS: Sixty patients were allocated randomly into two groups. The intervention group received five manual pulmonary inflations for 5 s at a maximum pressure of 25 cm H2O. The control group included patients whose residual CO2 gas was evacuated from the abdominal cavity using passive exsufflation as the routine method at the end of surgery by abdominal massage. Gentle abdominal pressure was applied to facilitate CO2 gas removal. RESULTS: When Ramsay's Sedation Score's results were compared between the two groups after the operation, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups during the first and (p value = 0.20) second (p value = 0.61) hours. A repeated measures ANOVA revealed that the pulmonary recruitment maneuver is significant (p-value 0.001) and had a high effect size (0.527) in reducing shoulder pain among laparoscopic cholecystectomy patients after controlling the effect of other covariate patient characteristics. CONCLUSION: Utilizing a pulmonary recruitment maneuver at the end of laparoscopic surgery reduces shoulder pain.

Aims: To explore university students' levels of stress, stressors, and their coping style. Methods: A cross-sectional correlational design with a convenience sample (n = 676) of university students who completed the Student-Life Stress Inventory (SSI) and Coping Strategies Indicator (CSI) was used. Findings. Overall, two-thirds of the participant reported moderate levels of stress. Students with chronic illness, living alone, low CGPA, and having exams today experienced a statistically higher mean level of stress. Students who are living alone used the "avoidance" method more significantly and the "social support" method significantly less compared with students who are living with their families and friends. Conclusion: This study concurs with others that university students are prone to distress. To our knowledge, this is the first study in the region to explore the students' coping skills. Some of the employed coping and associated factors could be used to lay the groundwork for evidence-based prevention and mitigation.

Aims: This study evaluates the epidemiology of headache and migraine among adolescents aged 12 to 15. Methods: A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted to collect and analyze data from students in grades 7-10 over the course of one month, using a simple random sampling method. The overall number of participants in this study was 692, with an average age of 13.9 years (SD = 1.3). Descriptive measures and Fisher's exact test were computed. Multivariate regression was calculated to assess the predictors of headache and migraine. Findings. Approximately one-half of the students reported having headaches: tension-type headaches (10.3%), migraines (4.8%), and other headache types (31.5%). Moreover, girl students in the age group of 14-15 reported more headaches and migraines. Conclusion: The prevalence of headache and migraine in Jordan is high and increasing as students grow older. Health education programs led by school nurses and other healthcare practitioners are urgently needed.

AIM: The study aimed to identify nursing students' professional competencies and examine which factors of the clinical learning environment affect these competencies. BACKGROUND: Professional competencies are vital for the quality and safety of nursing practice. The learning environment is important for the development of professional competencies. METHOD: Data were collected from 178 nursing students using the Clinical Learning Environment and Supervision Scale and the Nursing Professional Competencies Scale-Short Form. RESULTS: The highest competency was achieved in value-based nursing care; the lowest competency was achieved in development, leadership, and organization of nursing. Factors such as positive pedagogical atmosphere, nursing care on the ward, and good supervisory relationship affected learning and, in turn, improved professional competencies. CONCLUSION: The results establish a link between the clinical environment and reported professional competencies, leading to a call for more focused coverage of these factors in the academic curricula.

BACKGROUND: Few longitudinal studies have focused on patients' cancer pain experience when receiving care in a multidisciplinary pain management clinic (MPMC). This study aimed to evaluate the experiences of a cohort of cancer patients newly engaged in a MPMC. METHODS: This study was based on a longitudinal approach in which data were collected over a 6 months period at the King Hussein Cancer Centre in Jordan. The study adopted the Arabic version of the Brief Pain Inventory to identify the level and prevalence of cancer pain, and to identify the impact of receiving care at the MPMC on patients' pain experience. Data were collected over four time points, and the period between these points ranged from 2 to 3 weeks. RESULTS: The majority of patients demonstrated improvement in their pain after receiving treatment at the MPMC, while a third still experienced severe pain. Significant improvement was reported at T1, and no further decline in pain was noted after this point. This indicates that exposure to the intervention provided by the MPMC generated, on average, an improvement in patients' pain experience. CONCLUSION: The MPMC may be an effective pain management strategy in the treatment of cancer pain.

The purpose of this study was to assess knowledge, attitudes, and practice toward epilepsy among Jordanian schoolchildren. A cross-sectional design was used, utilizing a self-administered questionnaire to assess students' knowledge, attitudes, and practices in eight schools in a single province in Jordan. The results showed students' age ranged from 12 to 18â¯years (meanâ¯=â¯15.19, SDâ¯=â¯1.8). Students demonstrated inadequate knowledge and negative attitudes toward people with epilepsy. None of the participating students had received first aid or seizure management training in or out of school. The conclusion state that students demonstrated poor knowledge and negative attitudes toward people with epilepsy. They had no form of education or training regarding epilepsy management or first aid, indicating a need to launch education sessions as part of the school curriculum and to introduce straightforward activities in the school health education program.

The purpose of this study was to ascertain elementary schoolteachers' perceptions of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in northern Jordan. This study utilized a descriptive cross-sectional research design using a self-reporting questionnaire to gather data from elementary schoolteachers in northern Jordan from February to June 2019. The results indicate that elementary schoolteachers in northern Jordan have negative perceptions regarding ADHD and its causes, treatment, and diagnosis. The lack of professional pre-service training and education about children's behavioral problems overall, but especially regarding ADHD knowledge and management of children with ADHD was found to be deficient among our sample of elementary schoolteachers. The pronounced lack of research on teacher management of ADHD in children in Jordan may have contributed to these findings. Structured educational and training programs addressing children with ADHD should be implemented to enhance teachers' knowledge about ADHD and to improve their role in helping the affected children and their families.

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about how Jordanian undergraduate medical and nursing students perceive Alzheimer's disease (AD) care. This study aimed to investigate nursing and medical students' AD knowledge, attitudes, and associated factors with their knowledge to inform reforms to multidisciplinary AD education undergraduate programs in Jordan. METHODS: Cross-sectional research was carried out using a self-administered questionnaire. Students' knowledge was measured using the Alzheimer's Disease Knowledge Scale (ADKS) and attitudes were measured using the Dementia Care Attitude Scale (DCAS). The survey was completed by 423 nursing and medical students. RESULTS: The overall mean score on the ADKS for students' AD knowledge was 17.50 (SD=3.08) out of 30 and the DCAS for students' attitudes toward AD was 26.76 (SD=6.19) out of 40. CONCLUSIONS: Medical students had a higher level of AD knowledge and a lower level of positive attitude than nursing students (p<0.05).

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effects of social support, parenting stress and maternal self-efficacy on postpartum depression among adolescent mothers in Jordan. BACKGROUND: Adolescent pregnancy may have serious health, social and economic consequences for young women, families and communities. In Jordan, the incidence of adolescent pregnancy has increased from 5% in 2012 to 15% in 2018. Little attention has been given to postpartum depression among adolescent mothers in Arab and Middle Eastern countries. METHOD: In a cross-sectional design using convenience sampling, 200 women aged less than 20 years, six to eight weeks postpartum and who could speak and read Arabic were interviewed in a participating health clinic. The interview occurred before or after a woman's scheduled clinic appointment and included socio-demographic data, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Maternity Social Support Scale (MSSS), Parenting Stress Scale (PSS) and Perceived Self-efficacy Scale (PSES). Data collection took place between December of 2018 and April of 2019. Reporting followed the STROBE guidelines. RESULTS: Results revealed that 28.5% of adolescent mothers had probable postpartum depression. Mothers who reported high social support, high parenting stress, low self-efficacy, financial stress and marital conflict had significantly higher EPDS scores than those who did not report these stressors. CONCLUSION: Prevalence of postpartum depression reported in this study warrants immediate action on early assessment, detection and intervention. High levels of social support may feel overwhelming for young mothers and contribute to high parenting stress, low maternal self-efficacy and marital conflict. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Adolescent mothers are at increased risk of PPD compared to mothers over 20 years of age. Perceived quality rather than availability of social support needs to be considered. Young mothers require education and early intervention prevention strategies to better prepared them for motherhood and manage stressors associated with their changing social role.

BACKGROUND: Phlebitis is one of the most common complications of peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) that can lead to many complications, including higher medical costs and longer hospital stays. OBJECTIVE: To identify the incidence of phlebitis associated with PIVC and determine its risk factors among hospitalized pediatric patients. METHODS: An observational and cross-sectional design was used. Data such as patient's demographics, medical diagnosis, place of admission, and other PIVC characteristics were recorded. In addition, observations of PIVC sites over 12-hour intervals were conducted to measure PIVC complications using the Visual Infusion Phlebitis (VIP) scale. SAMPLE AND SETTING: Over a period of six months, a sample consisting of 307 children from five governmental hospitals that are located in north and middle Jordan were targeted. The sample consists of patients under 12 years old with PIVCs who were hospitalized in pediatric departments. RESULTS: PIVC catheterization has been associated with several complications such as phlebitis (N = 164; 53.4%), extravasation (N = 107, 34.9%), pain (N = 37; 12.1%), leakage (N = 37; 12.1%), and obstruction (N = 26; 8.5%). The main risk factors for phlebitis were: children admitted to wards, PIVC inserted by novice nurse, catheter inserted in the lower limbs, and catheter with contaminated dressing. CONCLUSION: This study enriches knowledge of PIVC complications and risk factors of phlebitis to help nurses avoid complications and initiate prompt treatment, leading to decrease financial burden as well as patient pain and discomfort.
