BACKGROUND: Consecutive droughts and quantitative and qualitative reduction of surface and underground water resources have caused an increase in greenhouse and hydroponic cultivation for most garden crops, including strawberries, in Iran. On the other hand, most of the inputs of greenhouse crops in Iran are imported. To possibility of replacing vermicompost with peat moss under hydroponic cultivation, an experiment was done in a split plot based on randomized complete blocks design in three replications in Isfahan (Iran) Agricultural and Natural Resources Research Center in 2019. The main treatment was substrate at four levels included different levels of vermicompost (30 and 50%) and peat moss (30 and 50%) in combination with perlite and sub-treatment were Selva and Camarosa cultivars. RESULTS: The results showed that Camarosa cultivar and Selva cultivar in (perlite/ peat moss 50:50) and Selva cultivar in (perlite / vermicompost 70:30) had maximum yield. Leaf number and chlorophyll index were maximum in Camarosa cultivar in peat moss substrates. Strawberry cultivars had the highest root fresh weight, the content of vitamin C and total soluble solids (TSS) in substrates containing vermicompost. Camarosa cultivar in (perlite / peat moss50:50) and Selva cultivar in (perlite /vermicompost 50:50) had maximum root dry weight. Also, the highest number of inflorescences was related to substrates containing peat moss and (perlite /vermicompost 70:30). Maximum amount of fresh and dry weight of shoots were observed in (perlite/ peat moss70:30). Selva cultivar had more inflorescences (16.5%) than Camarosa cultivar and Camarosa cultivar produced more fresh and dry weight of shoots (16.5%, 23.01%) than Selva cultivar. CONCLUSION: Expriment results highlighted the importance of considering both main and sub-treatments in agricultural research, as they interacted to influence various growth and yield parameters. 50% vermicompost treatment combined with perlite had a positive impact on plant growth and in quality index such as vitamin C content and TSS was highest. while the choice of cultivar affected different aspects of plant development. Selva cultivar was known to be more tolerant to salinity caused by vermicompost. Vermicompost is local and more economical, also salt resistant cultivars are recommended in a controlled (30%) amount of vermicompost.

BACKGROUND: This study is designed to explore the potential impact of individual and environmental residential factors as risk determinants for bone and soft tissue cancers, with a particular focus on the Indonesian context. While it is widely recognized that our living environment can significantly influence cancer development, there has been a notable scarcity of research into how specific living environment characteristics relate to the risk of bone and soft tissue cancers. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, we analyzed the medical records of oncology patients treated at Prof. Suharso National Referral Orthopedic Hospital. The study aimed to assess tumor malignancy levels and explore the relationships with socio-environmental variables, including gender, distance from the sea, sunrise time, altitude, and population density. Data were gathered in 2020 from diverse sources, including medical records, Google Earth, and local statistical centers. The statistical analyses employed Chi-square and logistic regression techniques with the support of Predictive Analytics SoftWare (PASW) Statistics 18. RESULTS: Both bivariate and multivariate analyses revealed two significant factors associated with the occurrence of bone and soft tissue cancer. Age exhibited a statistically significant influence (OR of 5.345 and a p-value of 0.000 < 0.05), indicating a robust connection between cancer development and age. Additionally, residing within a distance of less than 14 km from the sea significantly affected the likelihood of bone and soft tissue cancers OR 5.604 and p-value (0.001 < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The study underscores the strong association between age and the development of these cancers, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance and screening measures in older populations. Moreover, proximity to the sea emerges as another noteworthy factor influencing cancer risk, suggesting potential environmental factors at play. These results highlight the multifaceted nature of cancer causation and underscore the importance of considering socio-environmental variables when assessing cancer risk factors. Such insights can inform more targeted prevention and early detection strategies, ultimately contributing to improved cancer management and patient outcomes.

The electric double layer at the liposome vesicle membrane has been investigated by a modified fundamental-measure theory in the framework of the restricted primitive model. An analytical equation has been obtained for the mean electrostatic potential (MEP) by solving Poisson's equation for curved membranes. This study investigates the influence of vesicle size, membrane thickness, surface charges, and electrolyte concentration on the structure, composition, and width of electric double layers (EDLs) on the inner and outer membrane walls. Our findings indicate that a thin and denser layer of ions is formed at the concave wall of the membrane (inner wall) compared to that at the outer membrane. As expected, the width of the diffuse layer decreases with the concentration and surface charge. Also, when the surface charges on both concave and convex walls are the same, the absolute value of MEPs on the inner membrane, concave wall, is greater than that on the convex wall. We have also investigated the diffuse potential, which decreases with concentration, membrane thickness, and cavity size, whereas it increases with surface charges. As we expect, the contact density of counterions at the inner concave wall of the vesicle cavity is always greater than the corresponding value at the convex wall, whereas this trend reverses for co-ions. Also, the contact density of counterions (co-ions) at the inner wall decreases (increases) with cavity size, whereas it increases at the outer wall (decreases). Finally, depletion of co-ions occurs at the membrane walls with enhancement in surface charges.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore the voices of the family members of Bipolar Disorder (BD) patients about the challenges ahead of them. METHODS: In this qualitative study, 22 participants shared their experiences of sexual challenges of patients with BD through in-depth, face-to-face, semi-structured interviews. Qualitative content analysis was used for data analysis. RESULTS: An overarching theme entitled "Unheard voices" reflected this experience. It comprised four main categories include sexual promiscuity, a change in sexual patterns, sexual support, and sexual indifference. The results revealed that the families of patients with BD have to deal with sexual promiscuity and change in sexual patterns in their family, and the family system attempts to respond to these changes by sexual support mechanisms and sexual indifference. CONCLUSIONS: Given the significant impact of healthy sexual behaviors on the quality of life of both the individual and the family, therapists and family support systems are advised to strengthen and educate families to support their patients' sexual health and needs and protect their sexual existence; they should also address the sexual challenges faced by these families as a diagnostic and therapeutic priority, and early sexual health interventions should be provided to these families.

Phytate (inositol hexaphosphate) is the major storage form of phosphorus (P) in nature, and phytases catalyze the hydrolysis of P from phytate and the formation of inositol phosphate isomers. In this study, a bacterium that produces phytase was isolated in a phytase screening medium. The bacterium was identified as Klebsiella sp. using phenotypic and molecular techniques. The PhyK phytase gene was successfully amplified from the genome, inserted into the pET-21a (+) vector, and expressed as a recombinant protein in E. Coli BL21. The efficiency of a laboratory phytase (Lab-Ph, PhyK phytase) was determined and compared with a commercial phytase (Com-Ph, Quantum Blue 40P phytase, AB Vista) under an in vitro digestion assay. The native signal peptide effectively facilitated the translocation of the protein to the periplasmic space of E. Coli BL21, resulting in the proper folding of the protein and the manifestation of desirable enzyme activity. The Lab-Ph displayed the temperature and pH optima at 50 °C and 5 respectively. In addition, the Lab-Ph was inactivated at 80 °C. Under an in vitro digestion assay condition, Lab-Ph improved the P solubility coefficient in broiler diets. In comparison, the Com-Ph significantly increased the P solubility coefficient even when compared with the Lab-Ph. In summary, this study has shown that Lab-Ph possesses the necessary biochemical properties to be used in various industrial applications. However, Lab-Ph is extremely sensitive to heat treatment. The Lab-Ph and Com-Ph under an in vitro digestion assay improved the solubility coefficient of P in the broiler diet.

BACKGROUND: Although congenital abnormalities of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) is the leading cause of childhood onset chronic kidney disease (CKD) and kidney failure, comprehensive information on the disease burden among children and adolescents globally is lacking. We aim to report the trends and socioeconomic inequality of CAKUT burden for people aged 0-24 years from 1990 to 2019·. METHODS: We reported the prevalence, mortality and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for CAKUT based on the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019, quantified the association of disease burden and socio-demographic index (SDI), calculated the slope index of inequality (SII) the relative index of inequality (RII) and concentration index. RESULTS: In 2019, the global prevalence, mortality, and DALYs of CAKUT among individuals aged 0-24 years were 167.11 (95%Confident Interval 166.97, 167.25), 0.30 (0.29, 0.30), and 32.22 (32.16, 32.29) per 100 000 population. The greatest prevalence, mortality and DALYs were recorded in the 0-4 year age group. The greatest mortality and DALYs were recorded in low SDI countries and territories. During 1990 to 2019, the prevalence, mortality and DALYs decreased globally, while in low and low-middle countries and territories the reduction was much less slower. India, Nigeria and Pakistan had the highest DALYs. Saudi Arabia and China exhibited a markedly decrease of CAKUT burden. Globally for every 0.1 increase in SDI, there was a 20.53% reduction in mortality, a 16.31% decrease in DALYs, but a 0.38% rise in prevalence. CONCLUSIONS: Inequality for disease burden of varying SDI was increasing globally. Thus, specific preventive and health service measures are needed to reduce the global burden from CAKUT.

One of the prerequisites for successful organ xenotransplantation is a reasonable size match between the porcine organ and the recipient's organ to be replaced. Therefore, the selection of a suitable genetic background of source pigs is important. In this study, we investigated body and organ growth, cardiac function, and genetic diversity of a colony of Auckland Island pigs established at the Center for Innovative Medical Models (CiMM), LMU Munich. Male and female Auckland Island pig kidney cells (selected to be free of porcine endogenous retrovirus C) were imported from New Zealand, and founder animals were established by somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT). Morphologically, Auckland Island pigs have smaller body stature compared to many domestic pig breeds, rendering their organ dimensions well-suited for human transplantation. Furthermore, echocardiography assessments of Auckland Island pig hearts indicated normal structure and functioning across various age groups throughout the study. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis revealed higher runs of homozygosity (ROH) in Auckland Island pigs compared to other domestic pig breeds and demonstrated that the entire locus coding the swine leukocyte antigens (SLAs) was homozygous. Based on these findings, Auckland Island pigs represent a promising genetic background for organ xenotransplantation.

A number of different neurological complications have been reported following vaccination against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Electroencephalogram (EEG) is one of the modalities used to evaluate the neurological complications of diseases. The aim of the present study was to identify the EEG changes in participants vaccinated against COVID-19. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, medRxiv, and Google Scholar were searched up to 1 September 2022, with terms related to COVID-19 vaccines, EEG, neurological signs/symptoms, or neurological disorders. All case reports and case series were included if the participants had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and a post vaccination EEG report was also reported. We used the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist for case reports and case series to appraise the methodological quality of the included studies. Thirty-one studies were included, which were comprised of 24 case reports and seven case series and a total of 36 participants. Generalised slowing and non-convulsive focal status epilepticus were the most common EEG findings post-COVID-19 vaccination. The most frequent symptoms were headache, fatigue, generalised weakness, and vomiting. In addition, the most common signs were encephalopathy, post-ictal phases, and confusion. Encephalitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, and post-vaccinal encephalopathy were the most commonly diagnosed adverse events. Furthermore, most of the imaging studies appeared normal. The EEG reports mainly showed background slowing and epileptiform discharges, encephalitis, encephalopathies, and demyelinating disorders. Future studies with larger samples and more vaccine types may help to further unravel the potential neurological effects of COVID-19 vaccinations on recipients.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent miscarriage (RM) is defined as the occurrence of at least two or three subsequent miscarriages within the 20th -24th weeks of pregnancy. The primary objective of this study was to investigate whether histidine-rich glycoprotein C633T single nucleotide polymorphism (HRG C633T SNP) statistically correlates with the occurrence of RM among Iranian women. METHODS AND RESULTS: Blood samples from 200 women were taken at the outset of the study. Then, the blood samples of 100 women who had a record of RM (case group) were compared with the other 100 women's blood samples who had no record of RM (control group). Following DNA extraction, the polymorphism of histidine-rich glycoprotein C633T (HRG C633T) for every case was specified and all women were genotyped by the amplification-refractory mutation system (ARMS) method. The results of the study revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between T/T genotype (OR = 3.5, CI (1.39-8.77), p = 0.007), and C/T genotype (OR = 1.83, CI (0.99-3.37), p = 0.05) in the case and control groups. Also, a statistically significant association was observed in T allelic frequency in the RM participants compared to the control group (OR = 2.01, CI (1.31-3.09), p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The present study determined that there was a statistically significant relationship between HRG C633T SNP and increased RM regarding allelic and genotypical aspects. Moreover, it became apparent that women with homozygous T/T genotype were more susceptible to the risk of RM.

BACKGROUND: Allergic asthma is a destructive inflammatory process in the respiratory system. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) have been reported in patients with obstructive pulmonary disease. On the other hand, several studies have shown the modulatory effects of mesenchymal stem cells on the immune system and inflammatory responses. Accordingly, the purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effect of administration of adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs) plus NAC on regulatory T cell system balance in an allergic asthma model. METHODS: Eighty Sprague- Dawley rats were randomly divided into the following groups: Control, Plasmalite, Allergic asthma, Allergic asthma + ADSCs, NAC, Allergic asthma + NAC, Allergic asthma + ADSCs + NAC and Allergic asthma + Prednisolone. at the end of the experiment, arterial blood gas analysis, inflammatory cell counts in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), inflammatory cytokine concentration, total IgE and specific OVA-IgE levels, gene expression levels of CD4+-T cell subsets, pulmonary indicators, edema, and lung histopathology were evaluated in all groups. RESULTS: Administration of NAC plus ADSCs demonstrated a significant decrease in total WBC and eosinophil counts, which was in line with remarkable decrease in IL-17 and TNF-α concentrations and increases in IL-10 level compared with other treated groups. NAC plus ADSC treatment showed significant increases in Treg gene expression, although Th17 and Th2 expression significantly decreased compared with that in prednisolone- treated rats. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study documented that the administration of ADSCs plus NAC has an inhibitory effect on the inflammation caused by allergic asthma in a rat model. The improvement of inflammatory indexes was significantly higher than that with prednisolone treatment.

Comprehensive insights into balance control of individuals with hearing impairment are compared with individuals with hearing. Primary sources were obtained from 7 databases including PubMed, LILACS, SCOPUS, CINAHL, PEDro, CENTRAL, and Web of Science. The search period extended from inception until January 5, 2022. The systematic review included 24 studies and 27 trials, with a total of 2,148 participants. The meta-analysis showed a significant difference in the average balance control between individuals with hearing impairment and individuals with hearing, with individuals with hearing having a favorable advantage (p = 0.001). Additionally, average balance control was found to be in favor of individuals with hearing (p = 0.001) when comparing individuals with hearing impairment who participated in sports. Finally, individuals with hearing impairment who participated in sports demonstrated a significantly higher average difference in balance control (p = 0.001) when compared to sedentary people with hearing impairment. Our meta-analysis results indicate a balance defect in individuals with hearing impairment compared to individuals with hearing. In addition, with increasing age, the balance in individuals with hearing impairment improved. Additionally, the dependence of individuals with hearing impairment on the visual and proprioception systems to maintain balance increased. Finally, there was more dependence on the proprioception than the visual system, while individuals with hearing had stronger average balance control than individuals with hearing impairment who participated in sports, when compared to sedentary people with hearing impairment.

Over the past years, several methods have been developed for gene cloning. Choosing a cloning strategy depends on various factors, among which simplicity and affordability have always been considered. The aim of this study, on the one hand, is to simplify gene cloning by skipping in vitro assembly reactions and, on the other hand, to reduce costs by eliminating relatively expensive materials. We investigated a cloning system using Escherichia coli harboring two plasmids, pLP-AmpR and pScissors-CmR. The pLP-AmpR contains a landing pad (LP) consisting of two genes (λ int and λ gam) that allow the replacement of the transformed linear DNA using site-specific recombination. After the replacement process, the inducible expressing SpCas9 and specific sgRNA from the pScissors-CmR (CRISPR/Cas9) vector leads to the removal of non-recombinant pLP-AmpR plasmids. The function of LP was explored by directly transforming PCR products. The pScissors-CmR plasmid was evaluated for curing three vectors, including the origins of pBR322, p15A, and pSC101. Replacing LP with a PCR product and fast-eradicating pSC101 origin-containing vectors was successful. Recombinant colonies were confirmed following gene replacement and plasmid curing processes. The results made us optimistic that this strategy may potentially be a simple and inexpensive cloning method. KEY POINTS: •The in vivo cloning was performed by replacing the target gene with the landing pad. •Fast eradication of non-recombinant plasmids was possible by adapting key vectors. •This strategy is not dependent on in vitro assembly reactions and expensive materials.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cervical cancer is the most preventable and ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecological cancer. However, in the world, there are disparities in health care performances resulting in differences in the burden of these cancers. The objective of this study was to compare the health-system quality of care and inequities for these cancers using the Quality of Care Index (QCI). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The 1990-2019 data of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) was analyzed to extract rates of incidence, prevalence, mortality, Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years of Life Lost (YLL), and Years of healthy life lost due to disability (YLD) of cervical and ovarian cancer. Four indices were developed as a proxy for the quality of care using the above-mentioned rates. Thereafter, a Principal Components Analysis (PCA) was applied to construct the Quality of Care Index (QCI) as a summary measure of the developed indices. RESULTS: The incidence of cervical cancer decreased from 1990 to 2019, whereas the incidence of ovarian cancer increased between these years. However, the mortality rate of both cancers decreased in this interval. The global age-standardized QCI for cervical cancer and ovarian cancer were 43.1 and 48.5 in 1990 and increased to 58.5 and 58.4 in 2019, respectively. QCI for cervical cancer and ovarian cancer generally decreased with aging, and different age groups had inequitable QCIs. Higher-income countries generally had higher QCIs for both cancers, but exceptions were also observed. CONCLUSIONS: Uncovering disparities in cervical and ovarian cancer care across locations, Socio-Demographic Index levels, and age groups necessitate urgent improvements in healthcare systems for equitable care. These findings underscore the need for targeted interventions and prompt future research to explore root causes and effective strategies for narrowing these gaps.

More than half of the world's population is infected with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), which may lead to chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and stomach cancer. LeoA, a conserved antigen of H. pylori, aids in preventing this infection by triggering specific CD3+ T-cell responses. In this study, recombinant plasmids containing the LeoA gene of H. pylori are created and conjugated with chitosan nanoparticle (CSNP) to immunize BALB/c mice against the H. pylori infection. We used the online Vaxign tool to analyze the genomes of five distinct strains of H. pylori, and we chose the outer membrane as a prospective vaccine candidate. Afterward, the proteins' immunogenicity was evaluated. The DNA vaccine was constructed and then encapsulated in CSNPs. The effectiveness of the vaccine's immunoprotective effects was evaluated in BALB/c mice. Purified activated splenic CD3+ T cells are used to test the anticancer effects in vitro. Nanovaccines had apparent spherical forms, were small (mean size, 150-250 nm), and positively charged (41.3 ± 3.11 mV). A consistently delayed release pattern and an entrapment efficiency (73.35 ± 3.48%) could be established. Compared to the non-encapsulated DNA vaccine, vaccinated BALB/c mice produced higher amounts of LeoA-specific IgG in plasma and TNF-α in splenocyte lysate. Moreover, BALB/c mice inoculated with nanovaccine demonstrated considerable immunity (87.5%) against the H. pylori challenge and reduced stomach injury and bacterial burdens in the stomach. The immunological state in individuals with GC with chronic infection with H. pylori is mimicked by the H. pylori DNA nanovaccines by inducing a shift from Th1 to Th2 in the response. In vitro human GC cell development is inhibited by activated CD3+ T lymphocytes. According to our findings, the H. pylori vaccine-activated CD3+ has potential immunotherapeutic benefits.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate international measures for pandemic control in the workplace based on guidelines from international organizations to learn from their experiences. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using content analysis. The search method involved reviewing published guidelines on preventing and responding to the COVID-19 pandemic in workplaces. After the screening process, ten guidelines were included in the content analysis. During the analysis, 200 meaning codes, 49 subcategories, and eleven categories were identified. Trustworthiness criteria were utilized to ensure the accuracy and strength of the findings. RESULTS: Eleven categories of international content during the COVID-19 pandemic were legal requirements and duties of employees and employers, structural and program changes, risk assessment, risk communication, information and training, internal and external consultation and cooperation, provision of facilities and tools for workplace hygiene, special conditions, special groups, closing and reopening workplaces, reducing contact and exposure and mental health. CONCLUSIONS: Protecting employees during a pandemic requires a multifaceted approach and strong advocacy. The operational plan for pandemic control should be developed based on the level of risk, with support tailored to employees' conditions and needs. Cooperation among international organizations is essential to develop a standardized plan and issue comprehensive guidelines in response to health emergencies with a global perspective and local implementation, drawing from the lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: There are several types of dermatitis, each capable of causing enduring changes that extend beyond physical discomfort. In severe cases, dermatitis can significantly affect mental health, social interactions, and the overall quality of life. This study reports the burden of dermatitis in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region from 1990 to 2019, according to sex, age category, and socio-demographic index (SDI). METHODS: Publicly available data regarding the point prevalence, incidence, and years lived with disability (YLDs) were collected from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study for both the MENA region and its constituent countries. The point prevalence, incidence, and YLDs of dermatitis were represented as counts and age-standardised rates with 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs). RESULTS: In 2019, the age-standardised point prevalence of dermatitis was 2744.6 (2517.8-3003.1) per 100,000 population, which was 2.3% lower than in 1990. The YLD rate was 92.3 (55.6-143.4) per 100,000 population, which was 3.1% lower than in 1990. The largest point prevalence rates were observed among those aged 70-74, for both sexes. The 2019 MENA/Global DALY ratio was not above one in any age group for either sex. During the period 1990 to 2019, there was no clear correlation between the burden of dermatitis and the SDI level. CONCLUSION: The dermatitis burden in the MENA region remained relatively stable from 1990 to 2019. Future prevention efforts should focus on improving healthcare access, health education, and workplace safety regulations.

Carp oedema virus (CEV) has distinct molecularly identified genogroups of viral mutations, denoted as I, IIa, and IIb. Failure to propagate CEV in vitro limits studies towards understanding its interactions with host cells. Here, virus isolates belonging to genogroup I collected during natural outbreaks in the Czech Republic were employed for routine CEV cultivation in monolayers of carp-derived primary cells, common carp brain (CCB) cells, and epithelioma papulosum cyprinid (EPC) cells. Induction of cytopathic effects (CPEs) was observed and recorded in affected cells. Cell survival rate was evaluated under serial dilutions of the CEV inoculum. Virus cell entry was quantified and visualized by qPCR and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. Study findings indicate primary gills epithelia likely present the most suitable matrix for CEV growth in vitro. Cells of the head kidney and spleen facilitate virus entry with microscopically confirmed CPEs and the presence of cytoplasmic pleomorphic virus particles. Cells of the trunk kidney and gonads are unlikely to permit virus cell entry and CPEs development. Although CEV cultivation in cell lines was inconclusive, EPC cells were CEV permissible. Monolayers of carp-derived primary cells show promise for CEV cultivation that could enable elaborate study of mechanisms underlying cellular binding and responses.

The Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a global concern, with updated pharmacological therapeutic strategies needed. Cancer patients have been found to be more susceptible to severe COVID-19 and death, and COVID-19 can also lead to cancer progression. Traditional medicinal plants have long been used as anti-infection and anti-inflammatory agents, and Moringa oleifera (M. oleifera) is one such plant containing natural products such as kaempferol, quercetin, and hesperetin, which can reduce inflammatory responses and complications associated with viral infections and multiple cancers. This review article explores the cellular and molecular mechanisms of action of M. oleifera as an anti-COVID-19 and anti-inflammatory agent, and its potential role in reducing the risk of cancer progression in cancer patients with COVID-19. The article discusses the ability of M. oleifera to modulate NF-κB, MAPK, mTOR, NLRP3 inflammasome, and other inflammatory pathways, as well as the polyphenols and flavonoids like quercetin and kaempferol, that contribute to its anti-inflammatory properties. Overall, this review highlights the potential therapeutic benefits of M. oleifera in addressing COVID-19 and associated cancer progression. However, further investigations are necessary to fully understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms of action of M. oleifera and its natural products as anti-inflammatory, anti-COVID-19, and anti-cancer strategies.

The intricate architecture of the intestinal epithelium, crucial for nutrient absorption, is constantly threatened by environmental factors. The epithelium undergoes rapid turnover, which is essential for maintaining homeostasis, under the control of intestinal stem cells (ISCs). The central regulator, Wnt/ß-catenin signaling plays a key role in intestinal integrity and turnover. Despite its significance, the impact of environmental factors on this pathway has been largely overlooked. This study, for the first time, investigates the influence of Cd on the intestinal Wnt signaling pathway using a mouse model. In this study, male BALB/c mice were administered an environmentally relevant Cd dose (0.98 mg/kg) through oral gavage to investigate the intestinal disruption and Wnt signaling pathway. Various studies, including histopathology, immunohistochemistry, RT-PCR, western blotting, ELISA, intestinal permeability assay, and flow cytometry, were conducted to study Cd-induced changes in the intestine. The canonical Wnt signaling pathway experienced significant downregulation as a result of sub-chronic Cd exposure, which caused extensive damage throughout the small intestine. Increased intestinal permeability and a skewed immune response were also observed. To confirm that Wnt signaling downregulation is the key driver of Cd-induced gastrointestinal toxicity, mice were co-exposed to LiCl (a recognized Wnt activator) and Cd. The results clearly showed that the harmful effects of Cd could be reversed, which is strong evidence that Cd mostly damages the intestine through the Wnt/ß-catenin signalling axis. In conclusion, this research advances the current understanding of the role of Wnt/ß catenin signaling in gastrointestinal toxicity caused by diverse environmental pollutants.

Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the physiopathology of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which is associated with impaired antioxidant defenses. This study aimed to investigate the effects of curcumin supplementation on serum levels of total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA), and disease activity in women with RA. In this clinical trial, 48 women with RA were treated with one capsule of curcumin (500 mg daily) or placebo for 8 weeks. Anthropometric measurements and fasting blood samples were collected at baseline and end of the study. Finally, we assessed the Disease Activity Score in 28 joints (DAS-28), dietary intake, and physical activity levels. While curcumin supplementation for 8 weeks significantly increased the serum levels of TAC (p < 0.05), it decreased tender joint counts, swollen joint counts, visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, and DAS-28 compared to the placebo at the end of the study (p < 0.001 for all). MDA levels significantly decreased in the curcumin group (p < 0.05). However, changes in MDA concentration were not significant between groups at the end of the trial (p = 0.145). Curcumin supplementation had a beneficial effect on increasing the serum levels of TAC and decreased DAS-28 in women with RA.
