RESUMO

A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Egypt from November 2015 to June 2016. Sexually active adult men were interviewed by a questionnaire designed by the authors. All the participants were evaluated by the abridged 5-item version of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF). A total of 3,000 sexually active Egyptian males participated in this study, 946 (31.53%) reported using PDE5Is at least once, and 2054 (68.47%) have never used them. The majority of those who used PDE5Is obtained them for recreational purposes mainly for pleasure (58.35%) and to increase duration/frequency of the intercourse (15.6%). Only 26.05% used PDE5Is to treat ED. The main source of obtaining PDE5Is was friends, relatives and colleagues (62.79%); 25.16% of users obtained the drug by themselves, and 6.66% were prescribed the drug by a pharmacist. Only 5.39% of users obtained the drug after a specialist physician consultation. Sildenafil was the most commonly used PDE5I (90.6%), and most of the users (88.05%) used them in an occasional manner even in the presence of erectile dysfunction, while 11.95% used the drug in a regular manner for every intercourse. PDE5Is are frequently used by the Egyptian male population, and most of them seemed to take them as recreational medications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Studies comparing subthalamus (STN) and globus pallidus internus (GPi) deep brain stimulation (DBS) for the management of Parkinson's disease in terms of neuropsychological performance are scarce and heterogeneous. Therefore, we performed a systematic review and metaanalysis to compare neuropsychological outcomes following STN DBS versus GPi DBS. METHODS: A computer literature search of PubMed, the Web of Science, and Cochrane Central was conducted. Records were screened for eligible studies, and data were extracted and synthesized using Review Manager (v. 5.3 for Windows). RESULTS: Seven studies were included in the qualitative synthesis. Of them, four randomized controlled trials (n=345 patients) were pooled in the metaanalysis models. The standardized mean difference (SMD) of change in the Stroop color-naming test favored the GPi DBS group (SMD=-0.31, p=0.009). However, other neuropsychological outcomes did not favor either of the two groups (Stroop word-reading: SMD=-0.21, p=0.08; the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) digits forward: SMD=0.08, p=0.47; Trail Making Test Part A: SMD=-0.05, p=0.65; WAIS-R digit symbol: SMD=-0.16, p=0.29; Trail Making Test Part B: SMD=-0.14, p=0.23; Stroop color-word interference: SMD=-0.16, p=0.18; phonemic verbal fluency: bilateral DBS SMD=-0.04, p=0.73, and unilateral DBS SMD=-0.05, p=0.83; semantic verbal fluency: bilateral DBS SMD=-0.09, p=0.37, and unilateral DBS SMD=-0.29, p=0.22; Boston Naming Test: SMD=-0.11, p=0.33; Beck Depression Inventory: bilateral DBS SMD=0.15, p=0.31, and unilateral DBS SMD=0.36, p=0.11). CONCLUSIONS: There was no statistically significant difference in most of the neuropsychological outcomes. The present evidence does not favor any of the targets in terms of neuropsychological performance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Grazoprevir is an NS3/4A protease inhibitor (PI), while elbasvir is an NS5A inhibitor. We performed this meta-analysis to directly compare grazoprevir plus elbasvir and ribavirin regimen vs. grazoprevir and elbasvir without ribavirin in the treatment of hepatitis C virus genotype 1 infection and to precisely evaluate the efficacy of the latter regimen in cirrhotic, IL28 CC genotype patients and those coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A computer literature search of PubMed, Scopus, EBSCO, Embase, and Cochrane central was conducted. Studies were screened for eligibility. Sustained virologic response (SVR) rates were pooled using OpenMeta[Analyst] software for windows. A subgroup analysis was performed to stratify the treatment efficacy according to the different baseline characteristics of HCV patients. RESULTS: Eight randomized controlled trials (n = 1,297 patients) were pooled in the final analysis. The overall SVR rate was 96.6% with 95% CI [95.5% to 98%]. For cirrhotic patients, the SVR rate was 95.7% with 95% CI [93.9% to 97.5%] and for non-cirrhotic patients, the SVR rate was 97% with 95% CI [95.9% to 98.4%]. Furthermore, the addition of ribavirin (RBV) to the treatment regimen did not significantly improve the SVR (RR 1.003, 95% CI [0.944 to 1.065]). The dual regimen was effective in patient populations with NS3 resistance-associated (RAS). However, this regimen achieved lower SVR rates (< 90%) in patients with NS5A RAS. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the 12-week treatment regimen of the fixed dose combination of grazoprevir plus elbasvir achieved high SVR rates in patients with HCV genotype 1 infection. The addition of ribavirin to this regimen did not add a significant benefit.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic, inflammatory condition, classified by the World Health Organization as a premalignant lesion. We performed this study to evaluate the correlation between microRNA-137 (miR-137) and CD8 oral tissue expression in OLP patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty OLP patients [classified into three groups: (a) papular, reticular, or plaque; (b) atrophic; and (c) erosive] and 20 healthy controls were subjected to biopsy of the oral mucosa. To evaluate CD8 tissue expression, we performed immunohistochemical examination, followed by immunostaining and computerized quantification. The expression of miR-137 was evaluated using real-time quantitative PCR. We used SPSS software (version 15 for windows) to perform the statistical analysis. RESULTS: Our analysis showed an increased tissue expression of CD8 (p < 0.01) and reduced expression of miR-137 (p < 0.001) in OLP patients, compared to the control group. Moreover, there was a statistically significant difference (p = 0.001) between OLP subgroups in terms of CD8 tissue expression [highest in erosive OLP and lowest in papular/reticular/plaque OLP]. However, these subgroups showed no significant difference (p = 0.168) in terms of miR-137 expression. A negative correlation (p < 0.05) between tissue expression of miR-137 and CD8 was noted with a varying correlation coefficient in different OLP subgroups (-0.250 in erosive OLP, -0.491 in atrophic OLP and -0.616 in papular/reticular/plaque OLP). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate reduced expression of miR-137 and a reverse correlation between tissue expression of miR-137 and CD8 in the oral mucosa of OLP patients. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Future studies should investigate the therapeutic potential of miR-137 overexpression in OLP patients.

RESUMO

Atazanavir (ATZ) is a well-tolerated protease inhibitor that can be boosted with ritonavir (r) to treat infection with resistant strains of human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1). The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare the efficacy, safety, and metabolic effects of ATZ/r regimen versus commonly used antiretroviral drugs such as lopinavir (LPV) and darunavir (DRV) in HIV-1-infected patients. We searched PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Cochrane CENTRAL, using relevant keywords. Data were extracted from eligible randomized trials and pooled as risk ratios (RR) or standardized mean differences (SMD) in a meta-analysis model using RevMan software. Nine randomized controlled trials (RCTs) (3292 patients) were eligible for the final analysis. After 96 weeks of treatment, the pooled effect estimate did not favor either ATZ/r or LPV/r in terms of virological failure rate (RR 1.11, 95% CI [0.74, 1.66]). However, ATZ/r was marginally superior to LPV/r in terms of increasing the proportion of patients with HIV RNA <50 copies/ml (RR 1.09, 95% CI [1.01, 1.17]). The pooled effect estimate did not favor ATZ/r over DRV/r regarding the change in plasma levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, or high-density lipoprotein at 24, 48, and 96 weeks. Moreover, no significant difference was found between the two regimens (ATZ/r and DRV/r) in terms of change in visceral (SMD -0.06, 95%CI [-0.33, 0.21]) or subcutaneous adipose tissue (SMD 0.12, 95% CI [-0.15, 0.39]). The ATZ/r regimen was generally as effective and well-tolerated as the LPV/r regimen for the treatment of HIV-1 patients. Compared to the DRV/r regimen, ATZ/r has no favorable effect on the plasma lipid profile or adipose tissue distribution.

RESUMO

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a globally prevalent neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by progressive neuronal loss in the substantia nigra and formation of Lewy bodies. These pathological characteristics are clinically translated into motor symptoms, such as bradykinesia, rigidity, resting tremors, and postural instability. Emerging data from epidemiological studies suggest a possible association between PD and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, which affects up to 71 million individuals worldwide. Preclinical studies have shown that HCV can penetrate and replicate within the brain macrophages and microglial cells, increasing their production of pro-inflammatory cytokines that can directly cause neuronal toxicity. Other studies reported that interferon, previously used to treat HCV infection, can increase the risk of PD through inhibition of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic transmission or induction of neuroinflammation. In this article, we provide a comprehensive review on the possible association between HCV infection and PD and highlight recommendations for further research and practice in this regard.

RESUMO

Due to increasing concerns about environmental impact and toxicity, developing green and sustainable methods for nanoparticle synthesis is attracting significant interest. This work reports the successful green synthesis of silver (Ag), silver-titanium dioxide (Ag@TiO2), and silver-selenium dioxide (Ag@SeO2) nanoparticles (NPs) using Beta vulgaris L. extract. Characterization by XRD, SEM, TEM, and EDX confirmed the successful formation of uniformly distributed spherical NPs with controlled size (25 ± 4.9 nm) and desired elemental composition. All synthesized NPs and the B. vulgaris extract exhibited potent free radical scavenging activity, indicating significant antioxidant potential. However, Ag@SeO2 displayed lower hemocompatibility compared to other NPs, while Ag@SeO2 and the extract demonstrated reduced inflammation in a carrageenan-induced paw edema animal model. Interestingly, Ag@TiO2 and Ag@SeO2 exhibited strong antifungal activity against Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotia sclerotium, as evidenced by TEM and FTIR analyses. Generally, the findings suggest that B. vulgaris-derived NPs possess diverse biological activities with potential applications in various fields such as medicine and agriculture. Ag@TiO2 and Ag@SeO2, in particular, warrant further investigation for their potential as novel bioactive agents.

RESUMO

This study presents a novel and efficient approach for pullulan production using artificial neural networks (ANNs) to optimize semi-solid-state fermentation (S-SSF) on faba bean biomass (FBB). This method achieved a record-breaking pullulan yield of 36.81 mg/g within 10.82 days, significantly exceeding previous results. Furthermore, the study goes beyond yield optimization by characterizing the purified pullulan, revealing its unique properties including thermal stability, amorphous structure, and antioxidant activity. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy confirmed its chemical composition and distinct morphology. This research introduces a groundbreaking combination of ANNs and comprehensive characterization, paving the way for sustainable and cost-effective pullulan production on FBB under S-SSF conditions. Additionally, the study demonstrates the successful integration of pullulan with Ag@TiO2 nanoparticles during synthesis using Fusarium oxysporum. This novel approach significantly enhances the stability and efficacy of the nanoparticles by modifying their surface properties, leading to remarkably improved antibacterial activity against various human pathogens. These findings showcase the low-cost production medium, and extensive potential of pullulan not only for its intrinsic properties but also for its ability to significantly improve the performance of nanomaterials. This breakthrough opens doors to diverse applications in various fields.

RESUMO

The world is gradually moving toward a severe energy crisis, with an ever-increasing demand for energy overstepping its supply. Therefore, the energy crisis in the world has shed important light on the need for enhanced oil recovery to provide an affordable energy supply. Inaccurate reservoir characterization may lead to the failure of enhanced oil recovery projects. Thus, the accurate establishment of reservoir characterization techniques is required to successfully plan and execute the enhanced oil recovery projects. The main objective of this research is to obtain an accurate approach that can be used to estimate rock types, flow zone indicators, permeability, tortuosity, and irreducible water saturation for uncored wells based on electrical rock properties that were obtained from only logging tools. The new technique is obtained by modifying the Resistivity Zone Index (RZI) equation that was presented by Shahat et al. by taking the tortuosity factor into consideration. When true formation resistivity (Rt) and inverse porosity (1/Φ) are correlated on a log-log scale, unit slope parallel straight lines are produced, where each line represents a distinct electrical flow unit (EFU). Each line's intercept with the y-axis at 1/Φ = 1 yields a unique parameter specified as the Electrical Tortuosity Index (ETI). The proposed approach was validated successfully by testing it on log data from 21 logged wells and comparing it to the Amaefule technique, which was applied to 1135 core samples taken from the same reservoir. Electrical Tortuosity Index (ETI) values show marked accuracy for representing reservoir compared with Flow Zone Indicator (FZI) values obtained by the Amaefule technique and Resistivity Zone Index (RZI) values obtained by the Shahat et al. technique, with correlation coefficients of determination (R2) values equal to 0.98 and 0.99, respectively. Hence, by using the new technique, the Flow Zone Indicator, permeability, tortuosity, and irreducible water saturation were estimated and then compared with the obtained results from the core analysis, which showed a great match with the R2-values of 0.98, 0.96, 0.98, and 0.99, respectively.

RESUMO

Over time, oil consumption has increased along with a continuous demand for petroleum products that require finding ways to increase hydrocarbon production more economically and effectively. So, enhanced oil recovery technologies are believed to be very promising and will serve as a key to meeting the future energy demand. This paper aims to introduce an innovative method to boost the EOR by using two novel types of surfactants synthesized from sulfonamide derivatives. Types I and II surfactants were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and their characterization was further performed using 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Additionally, the evaluation of these surfactants included interfacial tension measurements at concentrations up to 0.9 wt %. The combination of types I and II surfactants with alkaline (NaOH) was also investigated by the measurements of interfacial tension. A series of coreflood and sandpack tests under high-salinity conditions were carried out to assess the effects of a surfactant alone and alkaline-surfactant as a combination on improving oil recovery. The rock wettability was evaluated using relative permeability saturation curves, and the oil displacement efficiency was determined using fractional flow curves. The coreflood results demonstrated that alkaline-surfactant flooding with the chemical formula 0.2 wt % surfactant type II plus 0.5 wt % NaOH achieved a higher oil recovery of 74% OOIP compared to surfactant flooding with the chemical formula 0.5 wt % surfactant type II (64% OOIP) and waterflooding (saline solution with a 35,000 ppm salinity: 48% OOIP). Moreover, the experimental results showed that under both core and sandpack flood conditions, there was a noticeable reduction in oil-water interfacial tension, a change in rock wettability to more water-wet, and higher efficiency of oil displacement when alkaline was added to the surfactant. Based on current research, the alkaline-surfactant formulation is strongly recommended for chemical flooding because of its high efficacy and relatively low cost.

RESUMO

The dyes are synthesized by 3-Amino-2-thioxo-4thiazolidinone (N-Amino rhodanine) with glutaraldehyde or terephthalaldehyde by 2:1 mole to form a and b then coupled with diazonium salts p- Amino benzenesulfonic acid and 4-Amino 3,4-disulfoazobenzeneazobenzene by 2:1 to form new different bis-mono-azo a1 and b1 and diazo a2 and b2 acid dyes. Therefore, the synthesized dyes were applied to both silk and wool fabric materials. We also evaluated the antimicrobial susceptivity of these dyed fabrics to two model gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Further, the chemical composition of these dyes is emphasized by an elemental analysis. AIMS: This paper aims to synthesize and apply dye and antimicrobial to four new acid dyes based on derivatives of N-Amino rhodanine as a chromophoric group. Then, these dyes are used in dyeing silk and wool which have good lightfastness, and are also excellent for washing, rubbing and sweating fastness. Also, we measure antimicrobial susceptivity of silk and wool fabrics to Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. BACKGROUND: The new synthetic acid dyes, which have antimicrobial susceptivity to gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, are mostly used on silk and wool fabrics which are excellent for lightfastness, washing, rubbing and sweating fastness. OBJECTIVES: The present studies aimed at synthesis, characterization and antimicrobial susceptivity to gramnegative and gram-positive bacteria. METHODS: The infra-red spectrum was recorded using an Infra-red spectrometer, Perkin Elmer/1650 FTIR. The 1H-NMR spectra were recorded using a Varian 400MHz spectrometer. The absorbance of the dyes was measured in the ultraviolet-visible region between 300 and 700 nm by a UNICAM UV spectrophotometer. The dye uptake by wool and silk fabrics was measured using a Shimadzu UV-2401PC (UV/V is spectrophotometer at λmax) before and after dyeing. The produced dyes were found to have a good antimicrobial susceptivity to a variety of bacteria. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The compounds a1, b1, a2 &b2 show good antimicrobial activity toward gramnegative (E. coli), gram-positive (S. aurous) bacteria. The data showed that exhaustion and fastness activities of silk and wool dyed fabrics were both very high. CONCLUSION: In this work, we prepared newly synthesized acid dyes based on 3-Amino-2-thioxo-4- thiazolidinone derivatives and used them for dyeing wool and silk fabrics. Both synthetic dyes have shown good lightfastness and fastness properties. Also, all dyes have shown a good antimicrobial effect.

RESUMO

<b>Background and Objective:</b> <i>In vitro</i> propagation of fig (<i>Ficus carica</i> L.) is one of the possible approaches that may be used to maximize the diversity of plant species. The current work was carried out to evaluate genetic stability of micropropagated fig plantlets and to determine the effect of <i>in vitro </i>propagation on genomic content of Saudi fig. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> The start codon-targeted (SCoT), DNA-barcoding chloroplast gene RNA polymerase1 (<i>rpoC1</i> sequencing) and total protein profiling assays (SDS-PAGE) techniques were used to detect genetic stability in micropropagated fig plantlets. <b>Results:</b> The Scorable PCR bands were produced with 10 SCoT primers used, where the total number of bands was 135 bands. Twenty polymorphic bands were generated with 18.4% of a polymorphism percentage. According to the result, no visual unique bands were generated which confirmed the genetic homogeneity of micropropagated plantlets samples compared to the control sample (mother plant). Sequence analysis and phylogenetic tree generated using fig <i>rpoC1</i> sequence showed high similarity between control and plantlets samples of fig plant. The protein profiling results revealed no remarkable changes between micropropagated plantlets and the mother plant. <b>Conclusion:</b> The results indicate that using SCoT, DNA barcoding and protein profiling have demonstrated their utility to detect genetic homogeneity in micropropagated fig plantlets, which suggests using of micropropagation protocol of plants applied on the plantlets in the current study as a reliable protocol for <i>in vitro</i> culture and conservation of fig plant.

RESUMO

Water saturation assessment is recognized as one of the most critical aspects of formation evaluation, reserve estimation, and prediction of the production performance of any hydrocarbon reservoir. Water saturation measurement in a core laboratory is a time-consuming and expensive task. Many scientists have attempted to estimate water saturation accurately using well-logging data, which provides a continuous record without information loss. As a result, numerous models have been developed to relate reservoir characteristics with water saturation. By expanding the use and advancement of soft computing approaches in engineering challenges, petroleum engineers applied them to estimate the petrophysical parameters of the reservoir. In this paper, two techniques are developed to estimate the water saturation in terms of porosity, permeability, and formation resistivity index through the use of 383 data sets obtained from carbonate core samples. These techniques are the nonlinear multiple regression (NLMR) technique and the artificial neural network (ANN) technique. The proposed ANN model achieved outstanding performance and better accuracy for calculating the water saturation than the empirical correlation using NLMR and Archie equation with a high coefficient of determination (R 2) of 0.99, a low average relative error of 1.92, a low average absolute relative error of 13.62, and a low root mean square error of 0.066. To the best of our knowledge, the current research establishes a novel foundation using the ANN model in the estimation of water saturation.

RESUMO

Precise prediction of pore pressure and fracture pressure is a crucial aspect of petroleum engineering. The awareness of both fracture pressure and pore pressure is essential to control the well. It helps in the elimination of the problems related to drilling, waterflooding project, and hydraulic fracturing job such as fluid loss, kick, differential sticking, and blowout. Avoiding these problems enhances the performance and reduces the cost of operation. Several researchers proposed many models for predicting pore and fracture pressures using well log information, rock strength properties, or drilling data. However, some of these models are limited to one type of lithology such as clean and compacted shale formation, applicable only for the pressure generated by under compaction, and some of them cannot be used in unloading formations. Recently, artificial intelligence techniques showed a great performance in petroleum engineering applications. Hence, in this paper, two artificial neural network models are developed to estimate both pore pressure and fracture pressure through the use of 2820 data sets obtained from drilling data in mixed lithologies of sandstone, carbonate, and shale. The proposed artificial neural network (ANN) models achieved accurate estimation of pore and fracture pressures, where the coefficients of determination (R 2) for pore and fracture pressures are 0.974 and 0.998, respectively. Another data set from the Middle East was used to validate the developed models. The models estimated the pore and fracture pressures with high R 2 values of 0.90 and 0.99, respectively. This work demonstrates the validity and reliability of the developed models to calculate pore and fracture pressures from real-time surface drilling parameters by considering the formation type to overcome the limitation of previous models.

RESUMO

<b>Background and Objective:</b> Tissue culture and thermotherapy were proved to be suitable in eliminating viruses of many plants. This study was designed in an attempt to produce virus-free Al-Taif rose plants (<i>Rosa damascena</i> Trigintipetala Dieck) through the practical application of the tissue culture approach and thermotherapy. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> Double Antibody Sandwich-Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay ( DAS-ELISA) and Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) techniques were used to detect the presence of <i>Apple mosaic virus</i> (ApMV) and <i>Strawberry latent ringspot virus</i> (SLRV) in rose plant materials collected from Taif, KSA. RT-PCR was more sensitive than DAS-ELISA in detecting the 2 viruses. <b>Results:</b> Three different meristem-tip sterilization methods were compared and results revealed that treatment 3 (T3: 70% Ethanol for 1.0 min and 15% Clorox (Sodium hypochlorite 5.25%) for 10 min) was the most suitable as 97.78% of cleaned meristem tips survived. Meristem tips with different lengths were thermotherapy-treated for different durations. It was indicated that meristem tips of 0.5 or 1.0 cm and heat-treated at 37oC for four weeks gave the highest percentage of meristems that were able to differentiate into micro-shoots. <b>Conclusion:</b> RT-PCR detection of ApMV and SLRV revealed that using thermotherapy-treatment, for 4 weeks, of 0.5 cm long meristem tips was successfully applied to eliminate the 2 viruses in 92 and 96% of regenerated plantlets, respectively.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Association between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and chronic hepatitis C (CHC) still remains controversial. This work is concerned with assessing the potential role of H. pylori in the progression of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related chronic liver disease. RESULTS: A total of 449 individuals constituted this study (200 individuals were used to validate the assay while 249 individuals were used to assess the correlation between H. pylori infection and CHC). H. pylori antigen was quantified in serum samples using ELISA. As a consequence, our findings showed that H. pylori positivity was increased significantly (P = 0.021) with liver fibrosis progression as it was found in 44.45% of fibrotic patients and 71.88% of cirrhotic patients. We demonstrated that patients with F4 were accompanied by a significant (P < 0.05) increase in the concentration of H. pylori antigen displaying 16.52-fold and 1.34-fold increase in its level over F0 and F1-F3, respectively. Patients co-infected with H. pylori and HCV are 3.19 times (219%) more likely to experience cirrhosis than those who are mono-infected with HCV. This suggests that the risk for developing F4 was found to increase upon H. pylori co-infection when compared to CHC mono-infected patients. CONCLUSION: The elevated levels of H. pylori-antigen in HCV/H. pylori co-infection suggest increased susceptibility of co-infected patients for promoting hepatic fibrosis progression.

RESUMO

Chemical flooding using a polymer and/or surfactant has been widely applied in oilfields worldwide for enhanced oil recovery. Chemical adsorption in reservoirs has a significant effect on the rock permeability and wettability and hence can affect the overall oil production. In this work, two chemicals, namely, the xanthan gum (XG) biopolymer and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) anionic surfactant, were used individually as displacement fluids. The amount of chemical adsorption on the rock surface and the residual resistance factor (permeability reduction) were calculated throughout the flooding experiments using an unconsolidated sandstone (SS) pack model. The effects of the injected chemicals' concentration and reservoir salinity on adsorption capacity have been examined. Additionally, the effect of the addition of nanosilica particles (NSPs) to the injected fluid on the rock adsorption was also investigated. The results showed that the amount of XG and SDBS adsorption on the rock surface increased, albeit to a different extent, by increasing the chemical concentration at the applied salinities (0, 3.5, 5, and 10%) of the displacement fluids. Also, the permeability reduction increased with the increase in XG and SDBS concentrations; however, permeability reduction due to SDBS flooding was lower than that of XG in SS. The use of NSPs as a coinjectant to the XG and SDBS displacement fluids increased the adsorption on the SS rock. A plausible mechanism for the adsorption of the XG/NSP and SDBS/NSP blends on the SS surface was proposed. A density function theory calculation was employed to establish a relation between the adsorptivity of NSPs on SDBS and XG and the total energy and dipole moment of the molecules.

RESUMO

The burden of cancer diseases is increasing every year, therefore, the demands to figure out novel drugs that can retain antitumor properties have been raised. This study aimed to investigate the anti-tumor properties of amygdalin (Amy) against Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) bearing mice and its protective properties against liver damage. Amy and the standard anticancer drug Sorafenib (Sor) were given alone or in combination to Swiss albino female mice that had been injected with EAC cells. Biochemical parameters of liver function (AST, ALT, GGT, total protein, albumin), tumor volume, oxidative stress [malondialdehyde, (MDA)] and antioxidative [superoxide dismutase (SOD), and reduced glutathione (GSH)] markers were measured. The hepatic expression of the antioxidant-related gene [nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)], the migration-related gene [matrix metalloprotease 9 (MMP9)], and the angiogenesis-related gene [vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)] were evaluated by qPCR. The results revealed that EAC-bearing mice treated with Amy and/or Sor showed a decrease in the tumor burden and hepatic damage as evidenced by (1) decreased tumor volume, number of viable tumor cells; (2) increased number of dead tumor cells; (3) restored the liver function parameters; (4) reduced hepatic MDA levels; (5) enhanced hepatic GSH and SOD levels; (6) upregulated expression of Nrf2; (7) downregulated expression of MMP9 and VEGF, and (8) improved hepatic structure. Among all treatments, mice co-treated with Amy (orally) and Sor (intraperitoneally) showed the best effect. With these results, we concluded that the Amy improved the antitumor effect of Sor and had a protective role on liver damage induced by EAC in mice.

RESUMO

Successful drilling operations require optimum well planning to overcome the challenges associated with geological and environmental constraints. One of the main well design programs is the mud program, which plays a crucial role in each drilling operation. Researchers focus on modeling the rheological properties of the drilling fluid seeking for accurate and real-time predictions that confirm its crucial potential as a research point. However, only substantial studies have real impact on the literature. Several AI-based models have been proposed for estimating mud rheological properties. However, most of them suffer from non-being field applicable attractive due to using non-readily field parameters as input variables. Some other studies have not provided a comprehensive description of the model to replicate or reproduce results using other datasets. In this study, two novel robust artificial neural network (ANN) models for estimating invert emulsion mud plastic viscosity and yield point have been developed using actual field data based on 407 datasets. These datasets include mud plastic viscosity (PV), yield point (YP), mud temperature (T), marsh funnel viscosity (MF), and solid content. The mathematical base of each model has been provided to provide a clear means for models' replicability. Results of the evaluation criteria depicted the outstanding performance and consistency of the proposed models over extant ANN models and empirical correlations. Statistical evaluation revealed that the plastic viscosity ANN model has a coefficient of determination (R 2) of 98.82%, a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 1.37, an average relative error (ARE) of 0.12, and an absolute average relative error of 2.69, while for yield point, this model has a coefficient of determination (R 2) of 94%, a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.76, an average relative error (ARE) of -0.67, and an absolute average relative error of 3.18.

RESUMO

Improving oil production for high-salinity reservoirs using polymer flooding is challenging due to chemical and mechanical degradations. This study developed two biodegradable biopolymers based on graft copolymerization of guar gum (GG) with two different co-monomers, which are acrylamide (Am) and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS), and cross-linked by N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) to face these challenges. The newly synthesized guar gum-based hydrogels, GG-g-poly(Am-AMPS) (GH) and GG-g-poly(Am-AMPS)/Biochar (GBH composite), were evaluated as potential candidates for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) under high-salinity conditions. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of the synthesized hydrogels were investigated, and their rheological properties were measured at room temperature. Both GH and GHB display a shear-thinning performance. In polymer flooding experiments, guar gum hydrogel (GH) and guar gum/biochar composite hydrogel (GHB) showed a remarkable influence on delaying the water breakthrough and proved to be effective biopolymers for enhanced oil recovery in high-salinity reservoirs. At the optimum concentration of 5 g/L, GH flooding achieved maximum oil recoveries of 70.53 and 72.11% in secondary and tertiary recovery processes, respectively. Meanwhile, the waterflooding process achieved an ultimate oil recovery of 58.42%. GHB flooding at optimum concentration, 2 g/L, increased the amount of oil recovery by 8.95% in tertiary recovery compared to waterflooding. Furthermore, GH (5 g/L) and GHB (2 g/L) slightly enhanced the rock water wettability as confirmed by contact angle measurements for GH and the relative permeability saturation curves for GH and GHB.
