RESUMO
WRINKLED1 (WRI1) is an important transcription factor that regulates seed oil biosynthesis. However, how WRI1 regulates gene expression during this process remains poorly understood. Here, we found that BLISTER (BLI) is expressed in maturing Arabidopsis thaliana seeds and acts as an interacting partner of WRI1. bli mutant seeds showed delayed maturation, a wrinkled seed phenotype, and reduced oil content, similar to the phenotypes of wri1. In contrast, BLI overexpression resulted in enlarged seeds and increased oil content. Gene expression and genetic analyses revealed that BLI plays a role in promoting the expression of WRI1 targets involved in fatty acid biosynthesis and regulates seed maturation together with WRI1. BLI is recruited by WRI1 to the AW boxes in the promoters of fatty acid biosynthesis genes. BLI shows a mutually exclusive interaction with the Polycomb-group protein CURLY LEAF (CLF) or the chromatin remodeling factor SWITCH/SUCROSE NONFERMENTING 3B (SWI3B), which facilitates gene expression by modifying nucleosomal occupancy and histone modifications. Together, these data suggest that BLI promotes the expression of fatty acid biosynthesis genes by interacting with WRI1 to regulate chromatin dynamics, leading to increased fatty acid production. These findings provide insights into the roles of the WRI1-BLI-CLF-SWI3B module in mediating seed maturation and gene expression.

Maize silk is a specialized type of stigma, covered with numerous papillae for pollen grain capture. However, the developmental process of stigmatic papillae and the underlying regulatory mechanisms have remained largely unknown. Here, we combined the cytological, genetic and molecular studies to demonstrate that three homologous genes ZmSPL10, ZmSPL14 and ZmSPL26 play a central role in promoting stigmatic papilla formation in maize. We show that their triple knockout mutants are nearly complete lack of stigmatic papilla, resulting in a severe reduction in kernel setting. Cellular examination reveals that stigmatic papilla is developed from a precursor cell, which is the smaller daughter cell resulting from asymmetric cell division of a silk epidermal cell. In situ hybridization shows that ZmSPL10, ZmSPL14 and their target genes SPI1, ZmPIN1b, ZmARF28 and ZmWOX3A are preferentially expressed in the precursor cells of stigmatic papillae. Moreover, ZmSPL10, ZmSPL14 and ZmSPL26 directly bind to the promoters of SPI1, ZmPIN1b, ZmARF28 and ZmWOX3A and promote their expression. Further, Zmwox3a knockout mutants display severe defects in stigmatic papilla formation and reduced seed setting. Collectively, our results demonstrate that ZmSPL10, ZmSPL14 and ZmSPL26 act together to promote stigmatic papilla development through regulating auxin signaling and ZmWOX3A expression.

Intestinal injury is one of the most debilitating side effects of many chemotherapeutic agents, such as irinotecan hydrochloride (CPT-11). Accumulating evidence indicates that neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) play a critical role in the symptoms of ischemia and inflammation related to chemotherapy. The present study investigated the effects and possible mechanisms of phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC) in inhibiting NETs and alleviating chemotherapeutic intestinal injury. CPT-11 induced robust neutrophil activation, as evidenced by increased NETs release, intestinal ischemia, and mRNA expression of inflammatory factors. PEITC prolonged the clotting time of chemotherapeutic mice, improved the intestinal microcirculation, inhibited the expression of inflammatory factors, and protected the tight junctions of the intestinal epithelium. Both in vivo and in vitro experiments revealed that PEITC directly suppresses CPT-11-induced NETs damage to intestinal cells, resulting in significant attenuation of epithelial injury. These results suggest that PEITC may be a novel agent to relieve chemotherapeutic intestinal injury via inhibition of NETs.

The World Health Organization (WHO) predicted that patients with diabetes around the world will increase to 600 million by 2040, of which about 1/3 will develop diabetic nephropathy (DN). Therefore, the present study aimed to uncover therapeutic effect of HINT2 and determined its possible mechanisms. Patients with diabetes mellitus and normal volunteers were enrolled at our hospital. Male C57BL/6 mice were fed with a high fat diet and injected intraperitoneally with STZ for once (100 mg/kg body weight). Mouse podocytes (MPC5) cells were induced with 20 mmol/l D-glucose. Inhibition of HINT2 mRNA expression levels in patients with DN was observed, compared with normal group. The serum of HINT2 mRNA expression was negative in correlation with blood sugar, tubulo-interstitial damage, glomerular damage score or urine protein level in patients with DN. HINT2 expression in kidney tissue of mice with DN were downregulated. HINT2 presented reduced DN and inflammation and ROS-induced oxidative stress in model of DN. HINT2 promoted ferroptosis in model of DN by mitochondrial membrane potential. HINT2 suppressed MCU expression in model of DN. HINT2 protein combined with MCU protein increased MCU protein ubiquitination. HINT2 triggers mitochondrial Ca2+ influx to increase ROS production level by MCU. Taken together, these findings demonstrated that HINT2 reduced ROS-induced Oxidative stress and ferroptosis by MCU, suggesting that HINT2 may be a feasible strategy to treat DN.

Palladium-catalyzed decarboxylation of 5-methylene-1,3-oxazinan-2-ones and 5-methylene-1,3-dioxan-2-ones to generate aza-π-allylpalladium and oxa-π-allylpalladium 1,4-dipoles for [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction with 1,3,5-triazinanes was developed, affording a wide range of hexahydropyrimidine and 1,3-oxazinane derivatives in good to excellent yields (up to 99%). The acyclic sulfonamido-substituted allylic carbonates as aza-π-allylpalladium 1,4-dipole precursors also apply to the developed synthesized strategy, achieving the synthesis of hexahydropyrimidines. Moreover, the in situ-generated aza-π-allylpalladium 1,4-dipoles undergoing dimeric [4 + 4] cycloaddition were also demonstrated by the construction of 1,5-diazocane derivatives.
RESUMO
An efficient palladium-catalyzed [2 + 2 + 1] annulation of 3-iodochromones, bridged olefins, and iodomethane is described, affording a range of chromone-containing polycyclic compounds. Additionally, the corresponding deuterated products were smoothly obtained with iodomethane-d3 instead of iodomethane. Moreover, the synthetic utility of this method is further substantiated by gram scale preparation and application to late-stage modification of estrone.
RESUMO
Daqu is used as the fermentation starter of Baijiu and contributes diversified functional microbes for saccharifying grains and converting sugars into ethanol and aroma components in Baijiu products. Daqu is mainly classified into three types, namely low (LTD), medium (MTD) and high (HTD) temperature Daqu, according to the highest temperatures reached in their fermentation processes. In this study, we used the PacBio small-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing technology to determine the full-length 16 S rRNA gene sequences from the metagenomes of 296 samples of different types of Daqu collected from ten provinces in China, and revealed the bacterial diversity at the species level in the Daqu samples. We totally identified 310 bacteria species, including 78 highly abundant species (with a relative abundance >0.1% each) which accounted for 91.90% of the reads from all the Daqu samples. We also recognized the differentially enriched bacterial species in different types of Daqu, and in the Daqu samples with the same type but from different provinces. Specifically, Lactobacillales, Enterobacterales and Bacillaceae were significantly enriched in the LTD, MTD and HTD groups, respectively. The potential co-existence and exclusion relationships among the bacteria species involved in all the Daqu samples and in the LTD, MTD and HTD samples from a specific region were also identified. These results provide a better understanding of the bacterial diversity in different types of Daqu at the species level.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms behind brain and spinal cord injuries in hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and associated feeding difficulties are unclear, with previous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) attempts yielding inconclusive results. OBJECTIVE: We aim to evaluate an MRI radiomics model for predicting feeding difficulties in HIE infants. Additionally, we investigate changes in predictive capability after incorporating the duration of mechanical ventilation and the timing of MRI examination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective study with 151 HIE infants (January 2013 to December 2021), randomly divided into training and validation sets. Radiomics features extracted from basal ganglia-thalamus and brainstem in T1-weighted and T2-weighted MRI. Established single-modality, single-site, and multimodality/multisite models. Receiver operating characteristic analysis and area under the curve evaluated models. Decision curve analysis assessed changes in predictive capability. RESULTS: The combined radiomics model of the basal ganglia-thalamus and brainstem regions on the T2-weighted imaging demonstrated superior performance (area under the curve: 0.958 and 0.875 for training and validation, respectively). Combining scores with duration of mechanical ventilation and MRI examination time in a calibration plot model improved and stabilized performance, showing high fitting and clinical utility. Decision curve analysis favored the combined calibration plot model. CONCLUSION: The MRI-based radiomics model predicts feeding difficulties in HIE infants, with basal ganglia-thalamus and brainstem as relevant factors. The combined calibration plot model exhibits the highest clinical predictive efficacy.

Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus M58 (M58) and Streptococcus thermophilus S10 (S10) are 2 dairy starter strains known for their favorable fermentation characteristics. Therefore, this research aimed to study the effects of 1-d low-temperature ripening on the physicochemical properties and metabolomics of fermented milk. Initially, the performance of single (M58 or S10) and dual (M58+S10) strain fermentation was assessed, revealing that the M58+S10 combination resulted in a shortened fermentation time, a stable gel structure, and desirable viscosity, suggesting positive strain interactions. Subsequently, non-targeted metabolomics analyses using LC-MS and GC-MS were performed to comparatively analyze M58+S10 fermented milk samples collected at the end of fermentation and after 1-d low-temperature ripening. The results showed a significant increase in almost all small peptides and dodecanedioic acid in the samples after one day of ripening, while there was a substantial decrease in indole and amino acid metabolites. Moreover, notable increases were observed in high-quality flavor compounds, such as geraniol, delta-nonalactone, 1-hexanol,2-ethyl-, methyl jasmonate, and undecanal. This study provides valuable insights into the fermentation characteristics of the dual bacterial starter consisting of M58 and S10 strains and highlights the specific contribution of the low-temperature ripening step to the overall quality of fermented milk.

Ammonia (NH3) emitted from concentrated animal feeding operations can cause environmental and health problems, and indirectly contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Cattle feedlots are known to be large sources of NH3, but few studies have documented seasonal emissions from Australian feedlots. We conducted two field campaigns to measure NH3 emissions from an intensive beef cattle feedlot in southeast Australia, and these results were combined with previous measurements at the same feedlot to document seasonal variations in emissions and to derive annual feedlot emission factors (EFs). Emission rates were calculated with an inverse dispersion modelling (IDM) technique, based on NH3 concentrations measured at the feedlot with open-path lasers (OPLs). The average area emission rates in spring, summer, autumn and winter were 90.5, 167.4, 96.2 and 86.8 µg NH3 m-2 s-1 from the cattle pens, and 22.5, 18.1, 7.7 and 20.7 µg NH3 m-2 s-1 from the manure stockpile area, respectively. The total per-animal EFs ranged from 126.0 (autumn) to 190.2 g NH3 animal-1 d-1 (summer), representing a loss of 47.5-64.6% of the fed N. Seasonal variations in emissions were related to air temperature. Slight changes in crude protein content of the cattle diet may also have impacted seasonal variability. Taking seasonal variations into consideration, the average feedlot EF was 160.4 g NH3 animal-1 d-1, with 90% of the emissions coming from the cattle pens. Extrapolating the EF to all feedlot cattle in the country, the direct NH3 emissions from Australian feedlots amount to 65.2 Gg NH3 annually, or 3.7% of the national total. Our study benchmarks seasonal and annual EFs and N losses for Australian commercial feedlots, and provides a baseline for extrapolating the impacts of mitigation efforts.

BACKGROUND: Extravillous trophoblast cell (EVT) differentiation and its communication with maternal decidua especially the leading immune cell type natural killer (NK) cell are critical events for placentation. However, appropriate in vitro modelling system and regulatory programs of these two events are still lacking. Recent trophoblast organoid (TO) has advanced the molecular and mechanistic research in placentation. Here, we firstly generated the self-renewing TO from human placental villous and differentiated it into EVTs (EVT-TO) for investigating the differentiation events. We then co-cultured EVT-TO with freshly isolated decidual NKs for further study of cell communication. TO modelling of EVT differentiation as well as EVT interaction with dNK might cast new aspect for placentation research. RESULTS: Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) was applied for comprehensive characterization and molecular exploration of TOs modelling of EVT differentiation and interaction with dNKs. Multiple distinct trophoblast states and dNK subpopulations were identified, representing CTB, STB, EVT, dNK1/2/3 and dNKp. Lineage trajectory and Seurat mapping analysis identified the close resemblance of TO and EVT-TO with the human placenta characteristic. Transcription factors regulatory network analysis revealed the cell-type specific essential TFs for controlling EVT differentiation. CellphoneDB analysis predicted the ligand-receptor complexes in dNK-EVT-TO co-cultures, which relate to cytokines, immunomodulation and angiogenesis. EVT was known to affect the immune properties of dNK. Our study found out that on the other way around, dNKs could exert effects on EVT causing expression changes which are functionally important. CONCLUSION: Our study documented a single-cell atlas for TO and its applications on EVT differentiation and communications with dNKs, and thus provide methodology and novel research cues for future study of human placentation.

Macrophages have a vital role in phagocytosis and antiviral effect against invading influenza viruses. Previously, we found that methionine enkephalin (MENK) inhibited influenza virus infection by upregulating the "antiviral state" of macrophages. To investigate the immunoregulatory mechanism of action of MENK on macrophages, we employed proteomic analysis to identify differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) between macrophages infected with the influenza-A virus and cells infected with the influenza-A virus after pretreatment with MENK. A total of 215 DEPs were identified: 164 proteins had upregulated expression and 51 proteins had downregulated expression. Proteomics analysis showed that DEPs were highly enriched in "cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction", "phagosome", and "complement and coagulation cascades pathway". Proteomics analysis revealed that MENK could be an immune modulator or prophylactic for the prevention and treatment of influenza. MENK promoted the polarization of M1 macrophages, activated inflammatory responses, and enhanced phagocytosis and killing function by upregulating opsonizing receptors.
RESUMO
Fermentation is one of the most effective methods of food preservation. Since ancient times, food has been fermented using lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Fermented milk is a very intricate fermentation ecosystem, and the microbial metabolism of fermented milk largely determines its metabolic properties. The two most frequently used dairy starter strains are Streptococcus thermophilus (S. thermophilus) and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus (L. bulgaricus). To enhance both the culture growth rate and the flavor and quality of the fermented milk, it has long been customary to combine S. thermophilus and L. bulgaricus in milk fermentation due to their mutually beneficial and symbiotic relationship. On the one hand, the symbiotic relationship is reflected by the nutrient co-dependence of the two microbes at the metabolic level. On the other hand, more complex interaction mechanisms, such as quorum sensing between cells, are involved. This review summarizes the application of LAB in fermented dairy products and discusses the symbiotic mechanisms and interactions of milk LAB starter strains from the perspective of nutrient supply and intra- and interspecific quorum sensing. This review provides updated information and knowledge on microbial interactions in a fermented milk ecosystem.
The symbiotic relationship between Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus is reviewed.Their nutrient co-dependence is discussed. The role of quorum sensing in their interaction is discussed for the first time. This review is of interest to colleagues interested in exploiting LAB starter cultures.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate AI biases and errors in estimating bone age (BA) by comparing AI and radiologists' clinical determinations of BA. METHODS: We established three deep learning models from a Chinese private dataset (CHNm), an American public dataset (USAm), and a joint dataset combining the above two datasets (JOIm). The test data CHNt (n = 1246) were labeled by ten senior pediatric radiologists. The effects of data site differences, interpretation bias, and interobserver variability on BA assessment were evaluated. The differences between the AI models' and radiologists' clinical determinations of BA (normal, advanced, and delayed BA groups by using the Brush data) were evaluated by the chi-square test and Kappa values. The heatmaps of CHNm-CHNt were generated by using Grad-CAM. RESULTS: We obtained an MAD value of 0.42 years on CHNm-CHNt; this result indicated an appropriate accuracy for the whole group but did not indicate an accurate estimation of individual BA because with a kappa value of 0.714, the agreement between AI and human clinical determinations of BA was significantly different. The features of the heatmaps were not fully consistent with the human vision on the X-ray films. Variable performance in BA estimation by different AI models and the disagreement between AI and radiologists' clinical determinations of BA may be caused by data biases, including patients' sex and age, institutions, and radiologists. CONCLUSIONS: The deep learning models outperform external validation in predicting BA on both internal and joint datasets. However, the biases and errors in the models' clinical determinations of child development should be carefully considered. KEY POINTS: ⢠With a kappa value of 0.714, clinical determinations of bone age by using AI did not accord well with clinical determinations by radiologists. ⢠Several biases, including patients' sex and age, institutions, and radiologists, may cause variable performance by AI bone age models and disagreement between AI and radiologists' clinical determinations of bone age. ⢠AI heatmaps of bone age were not fully consistent with human vision on X-ray films.

The main manifestations of Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) are a spherical expansion of the left ventricle or near the apex and decreased systolic function. TTS is mostly thought to be induced by emotional stress, and the induction of TTS by severe infection is not often reported. A 72-year-old female patient with liver abscess reported herein was admitted due to repeated fever with a history of hypertension and impaired glucose tolerance. Her severe infection caused TTS, and her blood pressure dropped to 80/40 mmHg. IABP treatment was performed immediately and continued for 10 days, and comprehensive medication was administered. Based on her disease course and her smooth recovery, general insights and learnings may be: Adding to mental and other pathological stress reaction, serious infections from pathogenic microorganism could be of great important causation of stress reaction leading to TTS, while basic diseases such as coronary heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes were be of promoting factors; In addition to effective drug therapies for TTS, the importance of the timely using of IABP should be emphasized.

Intestinal fibrosis is a common complication of inflammatory bowel disease. There is still a lack of effective drugs for the prevention or treatment of intestinal fibrosis. Heat shock protein 47 (HSP47) plays a key role in the development of intestinal fibrosis. In this study we investigated the therapeutic potential and underlying mechanisms of fraxinellone, a degraded limonoid isolated from the root bark of Dictamnus dasycarpus, in the treatment of intestinal fibrosis. Intestinal fibrosis was induced in mice by dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) treatment. DDS-treated mice were administered fraxinellone (7.5, 15, 30 mg·kg-1·d-1, i.g.) for 45 days. We showed that fraxinellone administration dose-dependently alleviated DSS-induced intestinal impairments, and reduced the production of intestinal fibrosis biomarkers such as α-smooth muscle actin (SMA), collagen I, hydroxyproline, fibronectin and laminin, and cytokines such as TGF-ß, TNF-α and IL-ß. We then established in vitro intestinal fibrosis cell models in SW480 and HT-29 cells, and demonstrated that treatment with fraxinellone (3, 10, 30 µM) significantly relieved TGF-ß-induced fibrosis responses by inhibiting the TGF-ß/Smad2/3 signaling pathway. Molecular docking suggested that the fraxinellone might disrupt the interaction between HSP47 and collagen, which was confirmed by coimmunoprecipitation experiments. SPR analysis showed that fraxinellone had a high affinity for HSP47 with a Kd value of 3.542 × 10-5 M. This study provides a new example of HSP47-collagen intervention by a natural compound and has important implications for the clinical treatment of inflammation-induced issue fibrosis.

MAIN CONCLUSION: CgPG21 is mainly located in the cell wall, participates in the intercellular layer degradation of the cell wall during the formation of secretory cavity in the intercellular space-forming and lumen-expanding stages. The secretory cavity is a common structure in Citrus plants and is the main site for synthesis and accumulation of medicinal ingredients. The secretory cavity is formed in lysogenesis, when epithelial cells enter a process of programmed cell death. Pectinases are known to be involved in degradation of the cell wall during the cytolysis of secretory cavity cells, but the changes in cell structure, the dynamic characteristics of cell wall polysaccharides and the related genes regulating cell wall degradation are unclear. In this study, electron microscopy and cell wall polysaccharide-labeling techniques were used to study the main characteristics of cell wall degradation of the secreting cavity of Citrus grandis 'Tomentosa' fruits. At the same time, the full CDS length of the pectinase gene CgPG21 was cloned, encoding a protein composed of 480 amino acids. CgPG21 is mainly located in the cell wall, participates in the degradation of the intercellular layer of the cell wall during the development of the secretory cavity, and plays an important role in the formation of the secretory cavity in the intercellular space-forming and lumen-expanding stages. With the development of secretory cavity, the cell wall polysaccharides of epithelial cells gradually degrade. CgPG21 is mainly involved in the intercellular layer degradation.

Vacuolar processing enzymes (VPEs) with caspase-1-like activity are closely associated with vacuole rupture. The destruction of vacuoles is one of the characteristics of programmed cell death (PCD) in plants. However, whether VPE is involved in the vacuole destruction of cells during secretory cavity formation in Citrus plants remains unclear. This research identified a CgVPE1 gene that encoded the VPE and utilized cytology and molecular biology techniques to explore its temporal and spatial expression characteristics during the PCD process of secretory cavity cells in the Citrus grandis 'Tomentosa' fruit. The results showed that CgVPE1 is an enzyme with VPE and caspase-1-like activity that can self-cleave into a mature enzyme in an acidic environment. CgVPE1 is specifically expressed in the epithelial cells of secretory cavities. In addition, it mainly accumulates in vacuoles before it is ruptured in the secretory cavity cells. The spatial and temporal immunolocalization of CgVPE1 showed a strong relationship with the change in vacuole structure during PCD in secretory cavity cells. In addition, the change in the two types of VPE proteins from proenzymes to mature enzymes was closely related to the change in CgVPE1 localization. Our results indicate that CgVPE1 plays a vital role in PCD, causing vacuole rupture in cells during the development of the secretory cavity in C. grandis 'Tomentosa' fruits.

Nonsyndromic biliary atresia (BA) is a rare polygenic disease, with autoimmunity, virus infection and inflammation thought to play roles in its pathogenesis. We conducted a genome-wide association study in 336 nonsyndromic BA infants and 8900 controls. Our results validated the association of rs17095355 in ADD3 with BA risk (odds ratio (OR) = 1.70, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) = 1.49-1.99; p = 4.07 × 10-11). An eQTL analysis revealed that the risk allele of rs17095355 was associated with increased expression of ADD3. Single-cell RNA-sequencing data and immunofluorescence analysis revealed that ADD3 was moderately expressed in cholangiocytes and weakly expressed in hepatocytes. Immuno-fluorescent staining showed abnormal deposition of ADD3 in the cytoplasm of BA hepatocytes. No ADD3 auto-antibody was observed in the plasma of BA infants. In the HLA gene region, no variants achieved genome-wide significance. HLA-DQB1 residue Ala57 is the most significant residue in the MHC region (OR = 1.44, 95% CI = 1.20-1.74; p = 1.23 × 10-4), and HLA-DQB1 was aberrantly expressed in the bile duct cells. GWAS stratified by cytomegalovirus (CMV) IgM status in 87 CMV IgM (+) BA cases versus 141 CMV IgM (-) BA cases did not yield genome-wide significant associations. These findings support the notion that common variants of ADD3 account for BA risk. The HLA genes might have a minimal role in the genetic predisposition of BA due to the weak association signal. CMV IgM (+) BA patients might not have different genetic risk factor profiles compared to CMV IgM (-) subtype.

BACKGROUND: Despite major efforts to address psychological distress and quality of life (QOL) in people with cancer, only none to small intervention effect has been observed. There is reason to question whether psychosocial needs of patients have already been met under the usual oncology care. PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review was to examine changes in depression, anxiety and QOL during the existential plight in advanced cancer. METHODS: A literature search was performed in the PubMed and APA PsycINFO databases from year 1976 up to May 31, 2021. Longitudinal observational or experimental research targeting depression, anxiety or QOL in advanced cancer (stage III or IV), with baseline time since cancer diagnosis within 100 days, follow-up within 16 weeks post-baseline were eligible. Quality rating was based on the GRADE guidelines. RESULTS: Overall QOL did not reveal clinically relevant changes for the majority of studies as evaluated by effect size and raw score changes (median effect size 0.01, interquartile range -0.10-0.15). Nonetheless, modest to moderate improvement was found for depression (median effect size 0.28, interquartile range 0.03-0.38) and anxiety (median effect size 0.57, interquartile range 0.32-0.79). CONCLUSION: Transient distress symptoms and temporarily reduced functioning in the oncology setting may be considered normal, whereas impaired overall QOL needs to be addressed. Developing innovative interventions that enhance QOL for patients newly diagnosed with advanced cancer without interfering with patients' natural adaptation process is imperative.
