RESUMO

This study was carried out to determine the effects of the yakson or gentle human touch methods applied by mothers on their preterm new-borns on the mother's attachment levels and the baby's response. The yakson and gentle human touch methods are touch-based methods where stimuli with stress-reducing effects are given to preterm new-borns. This study was conducted with 90 women and their new-borns (Yakson = 30, gentle human touch = 30, control = 30) who were hospitalized at the neonatal intensive care unit of a state hospital in Turkey between August 2016 and August 2017. As a result, it was determined that the yakson and gentle human touch methods practiced on the new-borns by their mothers increased mother-baby attachment, contributed to sleep-calmness states, vital signs and weight gain of the baby and reduced their durations of hospital stay.Supplemental data for this article is available online at https://doi.org/10.1080/07399332.2021.1958817 .

RESUMO

The study was planned as a descriptive qualitative study to determine the emotional responses of neonatal intensive care nurses to work in the neonatal unit and to neonatal deaths. The sample of the study consisted of 7 nurses who work at the neonatal intensive care unit since data saturation was achieved. The data were collected using the "Semi-Structured In-Depth Interview Guide for Nurses". The data were analyzed using the content analysis method. Following codes were reached as a result of the study: 'happiness-sadness', 'professional satisfaction-exhaustion', 'empathy', 'responsibility-guilt', 'hope-despair' under the theme of being a nurse at neonatal unit'; 'unforgettable first loss', 'professionalism in intervention-and then: sadness, 'mature-premature difference', 'difficulty in giving hurtful news-inability to associate with death' and 'attachment-burnout' under the theme of experiencing neonatal loss.It was seen that nurses' emotions about working at neonatal intensive care unit were generally positive; however, these emotions changed to negative after neonate's relapsing and death.

RESUMO

This study was conducted to evaluate Turkish healthcare professionals' demographic characteristics and the effects of COVID-19 pandemic and stress, coping and trust levels, and to examine the correlation between them. The study has a descriptive and correlational design. The sample of the study included 529 healthcare professionals who volunteered to participate in the study between 01.06.2020 and 31.07.2020 in Turkey. Data were obtained using self-applied online questionnaires. The Perceived Stress Scale and the Trust in Relationships Scale were used to collect the data. The study found a significant correlation between the demographic characteristics of the healthcare professionals such as age, marital status and having children, and their perceived stress and coping level (p < 0.05). The study found significant correlations between the variables of having someone around them diagnosed with COVID-19, contacting with a COVID-19-suspected/positive patient, having a chronic disease, needing psychological support, questioning interpersonal relationships, quality of life and looking to the future with hope/enthusiasm, and healthcare professionals' perceived stress and coping levels (p < 0.05). There was a significant correlation between the variables of having a chronic health issue, abiding by the rule of stay at home/social isolation, quality of life and looking to the future with hope/enthusiasm and the Trust in Relationships Scale (p < 0.05). Determining the perceived stress, coping and trust levels of Turkish healthcare professionals should be regarded as an opportunity to provide necessary support not only in this pandemic period but after all this end.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of online communication skills training conducted for first-year nursing students on effective communication and self-efficacy and self-regulated learning skills. BACKGROUND: Communication skills are an important part of nursing care. METHODS: This research was designed as a pre-test-post-test randomized controlled experimental study. The study population comprised first-year undergraduate nursing students of a state university in Turkey. A total of 60 students included in the study were divided into the two following groups: experimental (n = 30) and control (n = 30) groups. The research data were collected between 1 December 2020 and 1 March 2021. Pre-test and post-test forms were simultaneously provided to the groups. Post-tests were repeated 1 month after the pre-test was completed. A 2-day (a total of 12 h) communication skills training was conducted online for the students in the experimental group after the pre-test forms were filled. Information form, Effective Communication Skills Scale (ECSS), General Self-efficacy Scale (GSE) and Self-regulated Learning Skills Scale (SRLSS) were used to collect the data. RESULTS: The effective communication and SRLSS mean scores of the nursing students were high and the GSE scores were below average. On comparing the groups, the post-test mean scores of the communication skills and GSE were found to decrease in both the groups compared with the pre-test ones. This decrease was significant only in the "ego-enhancing language" subdimension of ECSS (p < 0.05). The post-test mean scores of the SRLSS increased in both the groups, but this increase was not significant (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Although the SRLSS scores of the students increased in the post-test, the study results show that communication skills training did not have a significant effect on effective communication and self-efficacy and self-regulated learning skills. The results of this study are important in terms of guiding research and trainings that examine the effects of communication skills.

RESUMO

AIM/OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to measure individualized care perceptions and professional commitment among nurses and investigate the relationship between these variables. BACKGROUND: It is necessary to identify the factors that affect professional commitment and individualized care, which further influence outputs such as quality of care and patient and staff satisfaction. DESIGN: It is a descriptive cross-sectional study. METHODS: This study was conducted with 231 nurses working in surgery, internal diseases and intensive care departments at a public hospital in Turkey between September 2018 and March 2019. RESULTS: The study found that the perception of individualized care among the nurses (ICS-A) was on a good level (3.81 ± 0.71) and their professional commitment (NPCS) was at on a medium level (79.95 ± 13.07). There was a positive significant relationship between the departments at which the nurses worked and their perceptions of individualized care (p < 0.05). A positive significant relationship (p < 0.05) was also found between the professional commitment of the nurses and the duration of their service at the departments and whether they chose the profession willingly (p < 0.05). The results of the study indicated a positive significant relationship (p < 0.05) between the NPCS and ICS-A mean scores of the nurses. CONCLUSIONS: This study is expected to be guiding in education and practice environments on both national and international levels in terms of increasing patient care quality, patient satisfaction and job satisfaction in nurses.
