INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: several studies have been investigated co-activation can enhance the effectveness of PFM training protocols allowing preventive and therapeutic goals in pelvic floor dysfunctions. The objective of the present study was to investigate if an abdominal-pelvic protocol of training (APT) using gametherapy would allow co-activation of PFM and transversus abdominis/oblique internal (TrA/OI) muscles. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-five nulliparous, continent, young females, with median age 24.76 (±3.76) years were evaluated using digital palpation (DP) of PFM and surfasse electromyography of PFM and TrA/OI simultaneously, during maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), alternating PFM and TrA/OI contraction requests. All women participated on a supervised program of APT using gametherapy, that included exercises of pelvic mobilization associated to contraction of TrA/OI muscles oriented by virtual games, for 30 minutes, three times a week, in a total of 10 sessions. Electromyographic data were processed and analyzed by ANOVA - analysis of variance. RESULTS: When MVC of TrA/OI was solicited, it was observed simultaneous increase of electromyographic activity of PFM (p=0.001) following ATP. However, EMG activity did not change significantly during MVC of PFM. CONCLUSION: Training using gametherapy allowed better co-activation of pelvic floor muscles in response to contraction of TrA, in young nulliparous and continent women.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal spine disorders are common causes of chronic pain and impair functionality. Laser auriculotherapy and cupping has played a significant role in the treatment of chronic pain. OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the effect of laser auriculotherapy associated with cupping at systemic acupuncture points on chronic spinal pain. METHODS: Randomized controlled clinical trial. Volunteers underwent three evaluations: an initial evaluation, a final evaluation immediately after the last intervention session, and a 15-day follow-up. The pain was identified using the numeric pain scale. The pain threshold was also evaluated against mechanical stimulation using a Digital Dynamometer at specific points in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions. Fifty individuals with chronic spinal pain, randomized into groups: experimental (n = 25), submitted to 10 sessions of auriculotherapy with laser and cupping therapy and control (n = 25). RESULTS: The experimental group achieved pain intensity reduction between pre and post and follow-up moments (p < 0.0001), of greatest pain in the last seven days among all moments (p < 0.0001), of least pain in the pre with post moment (p = 0.006) and follow-up (p = 0.002), and an increased pain threshold between pre and post (p = 0.023). The control group achieved a reduction in the nociceptive threshold between pre and post (p = 0.001) and follow-up (p < 0.0001). The experimental group showed reduced pain intensity (p = 0.027) and greater pain (p = 0.005) after intervention and in pain intensity (p = 0.018), greater (p < 0.0001) and less pain (p = 0.025) at follow-up, compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: Auriculotherapy with laser associated with cupping therapy may effectively reduce pain intensity and increase the nociceptive threshold.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to verify the effectiveness of telemedicine in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in terms of its influence on physical conditioning, quality of life, and health conditions in adults/elderly people affected by chronic diseases. Design: This was a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: The search covered RCTs published from 2011 to 2021 and was conducted using the PubMed, Embase, PEDro, Lilacs, and Cochrane Library databases, on volunteers of both sexes, that were rehabilitated, and/or monitored, and/or evaluated, specifically, via remote care. The extraction, quality of studies, and risk of bias were assessed using the RoB2 (risk of bias) tool, for analysis of the strength of evidence, the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Developing, and Evaluation) method was used, and for the preparation of meta-analysis was used at RevMan 5.4 (Review Manager) was used. Results: The database search identified 3949 potential articles for screening, 13 of which were eligible for the present systematic review, involving 1469 participants with chronic diseases (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, heart failure, diabetes mellitus, and fibromyalgia). Through the meta-analysis, an advantage was identified for the remote intervention on physical conditioning (p = 0.001), with an estimated effect of 0.29 (0.11, 0.46) and on health conditions (p = 0.0004), -0.30 (-0.47, -0.14), while for quality of life, no significant difference was identified (p = 0.90), 0.01 (-0.13, 0.14). Conclusion: Telemedicine has clinical effectiveness for the outcome of physical conditioning and general health conditions in adults with chronic diseases when compared to usual care without face-to-face intervention.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluate the Kinesio taping (KT) effects on reducing pain and edema on postoperative (PO) after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. DESIGN: Controlled and randomized clinical study. SETTINGS: Individuals of both sexes, aged 18-45, underwent ACL reconstruction were randomized into intervention (IG; n = 19) and control (CG; n = 19) groups. METHODS: Intervention consisted of KT bandage applications at hospital discharge for seven days, and on the 7th PO day, which was removed on the 14th PO. CG received specific instructions from the physiotherapy service. All volunteers were evaluations before and immediately after surgery, on the 7th and 14th PO day. Pain threshold (KgF), evaluated by algometer; edema (cm), evaluated by the perimetry measurements and volume of the lower limbs and the truncated cone test (ml) were the evaluated variables. The Student's t-test and Mann-Whitney U test were used to evaluate intergroup, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Dunnett's test to evaluate intragroup. RESULTS: Edema reduction and increased nociceptive threshold were significant in the 7th (p < 0.001; p = 0.003) and 14th (p < 0.001; p = 0.006) PO day in IG when compared to CG patients. IG perimetry levels, on the 7th and 14th PO were similar to preoperative period (p = 0.229; p = 1.000). IG nociceptive threshold value was similar on the 14th PO to before the surgery (p = 0.987). The same pattern did not occur in CG. CONCLUSION: KT treatment reduced edema and increased nociceptive threshold in the 7th and 14th PO ACL reconstruction.

Objective: To analyze the influence of exergaming (EXE) quality of life, cancer-related fatigue (CRF), electromyography, and strength and endurance muscle in a randomized crossover trial. Methods: We conducted a single-blinded, randomized, and crossover trial, which included 38 cancer volunteers undergoing chemotherapy (Age = 60.07 ± 12.10 years; body mass index = 26.79 ± 5.33 kg/m2). All volunteers were randomized into two intervention moments: EXE and without intervention (WI) and after 1-month washout period of crossing of the evaluated moments. The intervention was performed on an EXE protocol using Xbox 360 Kinect®, with the game "Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012" two to three times per week for 20 sessions. All volunteers were assessed the CRF and quality-of-life levels through the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-F) questionnaire, the median frequency (MDF) by surface electromyography, maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC), and the muscle endurance time at 80% MVIC of the dorsiflexors and plantar flexors using dynamometer. Results: In the comparison between EXE and WI moments, were observed increase in the scores for quality of life (P < 0.001), subscale fatigue (P < 0.001), in the MDF values of right lateral gastrocnemius muscles: P = 0.017, muscle endurance time (left dorsiflexion [LDF]: P < 0.001; right dorsiflexion [RDF]: P < 0.001; left plantar flexion [LPF]: P < 0.001; RPF: P = 0.039), and muscle strength (LDF: P < 0.001; RDF: P < 0.001; LPF: P = 0.002). Conclusion: The crossover study, the EXE protocol promoted improvement in cancer-related fatigue (CRF) and quality of life, increased MVIC, endurance time, and MDF values of the dorsiflexor and plantar flexor muscles of cancer volunteers undergoing chemotherapy.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the respiratory effects of a Pilates method (PM) protocol in adult women. DESIGN: Single-blind randomized controlled trial. SETTINGS: Healthy women were randomized into two groups using the Random.org online tool: a Pilates group (PG) (n = 33) and a control group (CG) (n = 29). PARTICIPANTS: Sixty-two healthy women, aged 18-44 years, sedentary or irregularly active B (as defined by the international physical activity questionnaire [IPAQ]). The intervention consisted of 16 sessions of PM. protocol twice a week for the PG. The CG without intervention. MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES: The variables evaluated were maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP), maximal expiratory pressure (MEP), peak expiratory flow (PEF), tidal volume (TV), respiratory frequency (RF), minute volume (MV), and slow vital capacity (SVC). RESULTS: The results showed significant evidence of the beneficial respiratory effects of the PM protocol when the PG was compared with the CG: increased MIP (p = 0.001), and a significant increase in TV (p = 0,047). CONCLUSION: The PM protocol used in this study may be effective for respiratory muscle strength because it improved MIP and TV. BACKGROUND: The use of insoles, which is increasingly widespread, can promote changes in biomechanics during running. RESEARCH QUESTION: Can the use of insoles with various patterns of infracapital support influence factors related to the dynamic stability of the lower limbs during running on a treadmill in recreational runners? METHODS: This is controlled single-blind repeated measures. Static baropodometric data were collected, as well as kinematic data for the lower limbs and electromyographic data for the gluteus maximus and gluteus medius muscles, for twelve recreational runners on a treadmill using four models of insoles (neutral and with forefoot elements - infracapital bar). RESULTS: Neutral insoles were able to reduce laterolateral displacement, increase the displacement of the mass to the posterior, and increase the lateral rotation of the left knee and medial rotation of the right hip. Insoles with a 2 mm total infracapital bar were able to move the mass to the posterior, increase laterolateral displacement and activate the gluteus medius. Insoles with a 2 mm medial infracapital bar were able to increase the displacement of the mass to the posterior, increase the adduction of left hip and the medial rotation of right hip, and activate the gluteus medius. Insoles with a 4 mm medial infracapital element were able to move the body mass to the posterior and to the left, increase laterolateral displacement, increase the adduction of left hip, the medial rotation of right hip and the abduction of right knee. SIGNIFICANCE: The insoles evaluated in the present study were able to modify biomechanical variables of recreational runners related to dynamic stability during running on a treadmill and static baropodometric variables.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of laser auriculotherapy on chronic spinal pain. It is a randomized controlled clinical trial. METHODS: Volunteers with chronic spinal pain underwent three evaluations: an initial evaluation, a final evaluation immediately after the last intervention session, and a 15-day follow-up. Pain intensity, nociceptive threshold in relation to mechanical stimulus, and degree of pain (the greatest and least pain) in the last seven days were the assessed variables. The experimental group (EG, n = 24) underwent 10 sessions of laser auriculotherapy twice a week, while the control group (CG, n = 23) did not receive any intervention. RESULTS: The EG showed great clinical improvement in relation to the variable pain intensity between pre- and post-interventions (65.2%) and pre-intervention and follow-up (58.62%) compared to the CG. There was a significant increase in the nociceptive threshold for the EG. In contrast, the CG showed a significant reduction in the nociceptive threshold. The intergroup analysis indicated an improvement in pain intensity for the EG (0.006). This result remained at the follow-up (0.012). The nociceptive threshold increased over time for the EG (0.016). In contrast, the CG showed a reduction in this variable with a significant difference over time (<0.001). CONCLUSION: The results of this clinical trial suggest that the proposed intervention may be effective in reducing pain intensity and increasing the nociceptive threshold. The effect of the intervention remained 15 days after the end of the treatment, when the volunteers were re-evaluated.

We analyzed lesser diameter and distribution of fiber types in different skeletal muscles from female Wistar rats using a histoenzymology Myofibrillar Adenosine Tri-phosphatase (mATPase) method. Fragments from muscles were frozen and processed by mATPase in different pH. Adult and weanling rat soleus muscles presented a predominance of type I fibers and larger fiber diameters. In the plantar muscle in adult rats, the type IIB fibers demonstrated greater lesser diameter while in the weanling animals, types I and IIB fibers were larger. The plantar muscle of animals of both ages was composed predominantly of the type IID fibers. The type IID fibers were observed in similar amounts in the lateral gastrocnemius and the medial gastrocnemius muscles. Type IIB fibers showed predominance and presented higher size in comparison with other types in the EDL muscle. The present study shows that data on fiber type distribution and fiber lesser diameter obtained in adult animals cannot always be applied to weanling animals of the same species. Using the mATPase, despite the difficult handling, is an important tool to determine the different characteristics of the specific fibers in the skeletal muscle tissue.

BACKGROUND: The Health-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire for Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy (NVPQOL) is a validated questionnaire assessing quality of life among pregnant women with nausea and vomiting. OBJECTIVE: To translate, cross-culturally adapt and evaluate the reliability of the NVPQOL. DESIGN AND SETTING: Observational cross-sectional study developed in a public university in Brazil. METHODS: The translation, synthesis of translations, back-translation, expert committee, pre-testing and validation were carried out, resulting in a Portuguese-language version. The internal consistency, intra-rater and test-retest reliability and correlation between the total score of the Portuguese-language version of the NVPQOL and the domains of the World Health Organization Quality of Life-bref questionnaire were considered in the data analysis. RESULTS: The instrument went through the process with testing on 104 pregnant women. Strong internal consistency (Cronbach's α: 0.95), strong intra-rater and test-retest reliability (P < 0.0; intraclass correlation coefficient: 0.89; confidence interval: 0.791-0.945) and strong correlation between the total score of the Portuguese-language version of the NVPQOL and the physical health domain of the World Health Organization Quality of Life-bref questionnaire (P < 0.01; R = -0.8) were observed. CONCLUSION: The NVPQOL was translated, cross-culturally adapted and validated for the Portuguese language with satisfactory psychometric properties for assessing quality of life, especially in relation to physical health, among pregnant women with symptoms of nausea and vomiting in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Objective: To analyze the effect of the exergaming on muscular activity at rest and on maximum voluntary isometric contraction by electromyography (EMG) at peak torque, widespread pressure hyperalgesia identified using a tender point count, and static balance in fibromyalgia. Materials and Methods: Thirty-five women were divided into two groups: Wii™ (virtual rehabilitation, n = 16) and control (stretching exercises, n = 19), through simple randomization. The volunteers were evaluated by means of EMG, dynamometry by load cell, baropodometry, and algometry before interventions and reevaluated after the 10th and 20th sessions. The subjects participated fully in three 1-hour treatment sessions per week of 20 sessions. Results: The Wii group showed significant benefits for the peak torque of dorsiflexion movement after 20 sessions and for movement plantarflexion after 10 sessions. The control group showed bilateral improvement in muscular activity in the tibialis anterior muscle after 20 sessions. Both groups showed a significant decrease in tender point count, suggesting improved hyperalgesia after 10 sessions and 20 sessions. No significant improvement was found in static baropodometry in the two evaluated groups. Conclusion: Exergaming have the potential to increase the peak torque for dorsiflexion and plantarflexion movement in women with fibromyalgia. It also produces a decrease in tender point count equal to that with flexibility exercises and does not produce changes in the static balance.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation of the femoral quadriceps associated or not with whey protein supplementation on the electromyographic activity and body mass distribution in volunteers undergoing anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. METHODS: 24 volunteers were randomly divided into three groups: basal control, whey protein in association with neuromuscular electrical stimulation, and neuromuscular electrical stimulation alone. RESULTS: In the postoperative evaluation, during the mini squat, the basal group showed a decrease in the electromyographic activity of the vastus medialis (p = 0.005, eyes open; p = 0.003, eyes closed), vastus lateralis (p = 0.005, eyes open; p = 0.020; eyes closed) and rectus femoris (p = 0.075, eyes open; p = 0.074, eyes closed) and of body mass distribution in the injured limb (p < 0.001, eyes open; p < 0.001, eyes closed), and in the healthy limb (p < 0.001, eyes open; p < 0.001, eyes closed). CONCLUSION: The early use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation of the quadriceps femoris maintained the electromyographic activity of the vastus medialis and vastus lateralis muscles and prevented asymmetries in body mass distribution 15 days after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. OBJETIVO: Analisar os efeitos da estimulação elétrica neuromuscular do quadríceps femoral associado ou não à suplementação com whey protein na atividade eletromiográfica e distribuição de massa corporal em voluntários submetidos à reconstrução do ligamento cruzado anterior. MÉTODOS: 24 voluntários foram divididos em três grupos: controle basal, whey protein associado com estimulação elétrica neuromuscular e estimulação elétrica neuromuscular isolada. RESULTADOS: Na avaliação pós-operatória, durante o miniagachamento, o grupo controle basal demonstrou diminuição da atividade eletromiográfica do vasto medial (p = 0,005, olhos abertos; p = 0,003, olhos fechados), vasto lateral (p = 0,005, olhos abertos; p = 0,020, olhos fechados) e reto femoral (p = 0,075, olhos abertos; p = 0,074, olhos fechados) e da distribuição de massa corporal no membro operado (p < 0,001, olhos abertos; p < 0,001, olhos fechados) e membro lesionado (p < 0,001, olhos abertos; p < 0,001, olhos fechados). CONCLUSÃO: O uso precoce de estimulação elétrica neuromuscular do quadríceps femoral, independentemente do uso de whey protein, foi eficaz para manter a atividade eletromiográfica dos músculos vasto medial e vasto lateral, e prevenir assimetrias na distribuição de massa corporal 15 dias após a reconstrução do ligamento cruzado anterior. Nível de Evidência I, Ensaio randomizado de alta qualidade.

Objective: Evaluation of the effects of exergames in women with fibromyalgia on the impact of the disease-pain threshold and physical variables-compared to performing stretching exercises. Materials and Methods: Thirty-five women were enrolled in the study and divided by simple randomization into two treatment groups: the control group (n = 19) and the Wii™ (exergames) group (n = 16). Participants were evaluated using the fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ), algometry, step tests, cardiopulmonary parameters, and fatigue in the lower limbs. The participants underwent treatments for a period of 7 weeks with three 1-hour sessions weekly and were reevaluated after the 10th and the 20th sessions. Results: The exergames group showed significant reduction of their fibromyalgia symptoms, as demonstrated by lower FIQ scores in the key domains on questions regarding missed work, pain, fatigue, problems resting, stiffness, anxiety, and depression. Significant improvements were observed in mean algometric values in the cervical region, the second chondrocostal junction, the lateral epicondyle, left medial knee border, left occipital region, trapezius, supraspinatus, gluteal muscles, and the greater trochanter. Improved cardiovascular adaptation was reflected by decreased systolic blood pressure, reduction in fatigue of the lower limbs assessed by the CR10 Borg scale, and improved exercise capacity assessed by a step test. Conclusion: Exergames have the potential to increase exercise capacity, decrease the impact of fibromyalgia, promote cardiovascular adaptation, reduce fatigue of lower limbs, and improve the pain threshold in women with fibromyalgia.

Objective: To compare the strength of the middle deltoid muscle by means of dynamometry and the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI) in participants in treatment for cancer after the practice of an exergaming protocol. Materials and Methods: We conducted a randomized controlled clinical trial. Thirty-eight voluntary participants were divided into two groups: cancer group (n = 19; age = 61.46 ± 8.79 years; body mass index [BMI] = 28.36 ± 4.94 kg/m3) and control group (n = 19; age = 57.62 ± 7.57 years; BMI = 28.06 ± 3.74 kg/m3), and they participated in the study. All participants performed an exergame protocol by using Xbox 360 Kinect® (Microsoft, Redmond) with the game Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012 two to three times per week for 20 sessions. They were evaluated through the isometric dynamometer in the middle deltoid muscle and the SPADI at three moments: preintervention (EV1), after 10 sessions (EV2), and after 20 sessions (EV3). Results: The cancer group scored higher on both the disability index, in all three evaluations, and the pain index, in EV2 and EV3, when compared with the control group. There was a significant reduction in the disability score in EV2 and EV3 when compared with EV1 in the cancer group, whereas pain was lower in EV2 and EV3 when compared with EV1 in the control group. There were no significant interevaluation or intergroup differences in the maximal isometric voluntary contraction of the deltoid muscle of both upper limbs. Conclusion: At the end of the exergaming, protocol reduced the disability of the shoulder joint of the cancer group and decreased the differences between the groups for disability and pain scores, without changing isometric force.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of exergaming in the plasma levels of adipokines (interleukin [IL]-1ß, IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha [TNF-α]), Th1 (IL-2, IL-12, and interferon gamma [IFN-γ]), Th2 (IL-4 and IL-33), Th17 (IL-17 and IL-23), and regulatory T (Treg) (IL-10 and transforming growth factor-beta [TGF-ß]) in cancer patients undergoing treatment. Materials and Methods: We conducted a quasi-experimental control clinical trial using exergaming in all groups through the Xbox 360 Kinect™. The game used in this study was called Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012. The volunteer participants played the game two to three times per week, for a total of 20 sessions. Forty-five volunteer participants were divided into 3 groups: cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy treatment (chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy group CRG; n = 15); cancer patients who finished chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy treatment (cancer accompaniment group CAG; n = 15); and the control group (volunteers without a cancer diagnosis CG; n = 15). In the pre- and post-training period, all volunteers submitted to blood collection procedures using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). This test was used to obtain the levels of adipokines expression (IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α) and the cytokine profiles Th1 (IL-2, IL-12, and IFN-γ), Th2 (IL-4 and IL-33), Th17 (IL-17 and IL-23), and Treg (IL-10 and TGF-ß). Results: After exergaming, the CRG showed significant reductions in proinflammatory cytokines (IL-6: P < 0.05; IL-10: P = 0.038; TGF-ß: P = 0.049) and for CAG (IL-10: P = 0.034), as well as a reduction in the expression of cytokines related to the action of T lymphocytes. Conclusion: Exergaming promoted changes in the expression of cytokine profiles IL-6, IL-10, and TGF-ß, which correlated with the action profiles of CD4+ T lymphocytes.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to correlate potential the stabilometric parameters of baropodometry with the superficial temperature of the legs of cancer patients during and after treatment. METHODS: This study included 30 volunteers of both sexes, divided into the following groups: chemotherapy-radiotherapy group (n = 15; age = 57.13 ± 16.74 years) and cancer group without current treatment (n = 15; age = 63.29 ± 7.34 years). They were assessed for superficial temperature of the legs using infrared thermography with anterior and posterior views. Assessment of postural balance was conducted using a baropodometer, in 2 conditions-participants' open and closed eyes-to obtain the center of pressure (COP) of anteroposterior displacement, center of pressure of mediolateral displacement (COP-ML), and center of pressure of displacement area. RESULTS: When their eyes were open, the chemotherapy-radiotherapy group presented a high correlation between the displacement of the ML and the surface anterior temperature of both legs (right: r = 0.578; P = .030; left: r = 0.619; P = .018) and posterior region of the right leg (r = 0.571; P = .033), and they presented a high correlation between COP with anterior surface temperature of both legs (right: r = 0.585; P = .028; left: r = 0.540; P = .046). When patients' eyes were closed, no correlation was found between the thermography and the stabilometric parameters evaluated. CONCLUSION: During the chemotherapy-radiotherapy, cancer patients present ML and COP displacement that correlates with infrared thermography evaluation when their eyes are open.

Objective: The objective of this study was to define an appropriate linear model to analyse data on muscular fatigue in cancer patients over time through repeated measures techniques. Methods: Using the split plot in time system and linear mixed models, three groups of individuals were compared as to the methods used to reduce muscle fatigue. Group Cancer consisted of individuals who had already been treated; group Control consisted of healthy individuals and group Chemo / radio-therapy consisted of individuals diagnosed with cancer undergoing chemo and radiation therapy. Sessions were tested with exergames. A series of muscle strength data for each of the six muscles studied, in the pre-treatment, mid-treatment and final sessions. Result: The structure that best fit the covariance matrix was ARMA (1,1), according to AIC and BIC. There were significant differences and tendencies in the data series, especially for the left tibial muscle, in which the interactions between group and session and between group and time were significant, showing that exergames treatment increased muscle strength in debilitated patients and, with 20 sessions, the groups equalled in muscle strength. Conclusion: The linear mixed model proved to be efficient in modelling plots subdivided in time. Identifying the best structure of the covariance matrix allowed us to better estimate the effects, using tests appropriately to verify differences between factors that were not detected when using the median frequency of strength.

Objective: In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the effects an exergaming protocol for cancer patients who undergo or have already undergone cancer treatment. We sought to evaluate changes in cancer-related fatigue, function, and ability to perform daily activities, in addition to changes in the electromyographic pattern of the middle deltoid muscle. Methods: We conducted a controlled trial. Nineteen volunteers in the cancer group (aged 61 ± 9 years; body mass index28 ± 5) and 19 in the control group (aged 58 ± 8 years); body mass index 28 ± 4) participated in the study. They were evaluated by means of a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, the Functional Assessment of Chronic Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-F) questionnaire, and surface electromyography in the deltoid muscle at three moments: before the beginning of the exergaming protocol, after 10 training sessions, and after 20 sessions. The protocol consisted of practicing exergaming using Xbox 360® (Microsoft, Redmond, USA) with Kinect®. The game "Your Shape Fitness Evolved" (Ubisoft, Rennes, France) was used. Results: Total FACIT-F scores, fatigue subscale scores, and median frequency values observed in the cancer group were lower than those in the control group. These values improved in relation to the initial evaluation in the cancer group after the practice of the exergaming protocol. Conclusion: The exergaming protocol used in this study was effective for reducing reported symptoms of fatigue, increasing perceived quality of life, and improving the pattern of deltoid muscle contraction in cancer patients.

OBJECTIVE: Exercise is recommended for cancer patients to reduce fatigue and improve quality of life. This study's aim is to evaluate the influence of an exergaming protocol on cancer-related fatigue, muscle fatigue, and muscle strength in cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a quasi-experimental control study using exergaming in all groups through an Xbox360 Kinect™ console, two to three times per week, for 20 sessions. Three groups were created: cancer patients in chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy group (CRG; n:15), cancer patients after chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy (CAG; n:15), and a control group (CG; n:15). They were assessed for cancer-related fatigue using the fatigue subscale of the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-F) questionnaire. To assess dorsiflexor and plantar flexor muscle functioning, we used median frequency (MDF) of the surface electromyography and muscle strength using a dynamometer. The assessments were performed preintervention (EV0), after 10 sessions (EV1), and after 20 sessions (EV2). RESULTS: With an exergaming protocol, CRG and CAG showed a reduction in related fatigue compared with CG (P < 0.01). The CRG group saw an increase in maximal voluntary isometric contraction in right plantar flexor muscles and dorsiflexor muscles, as well as an increase in the MDF of both medial gastrocnemius muscles and the left tibialis anterior muscle of the CAG. For other analyses done, the differences were observed during exergaming. CONCLUSIONS: Exergaming demonstrated efficacy in reducing cancer patients' fatigue, including muscle fatigue, and increasing muscle strength in patients' legs.
