BACKGROUND: The concept of developmentally supportive care in preterm infants is of considerable significance in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) setting with regard to preventing complications from preterm birth and promoting optimal growth and development. To provide high-quality developmentally supportive care, NICU nurses must possess high levels of knowledge, importance, perception, and competence. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate South Korean NICU nursing staff's level of knowledge concerning developmentally supportive care, as well as the perceived importance, perception, and perceived competence regarding this concept. METHODS: This study employed a cross-sectional descriptive design. Between June 1 and 19, 2020, 160 nurses completed a self-report questionnaire pertaining to developmentally supportive care, which covered the aspects of knowledge, perceived importance, perception (including attitudes, perceived behavioral control, subjective norms, and intentions), and perceived competence. RESULTS: The levels of knowledge, attitude, and intention as a subfactor of perception, and perceived competence pertaining to developmentally supportive care were not high. There was no significant difference in the knowledge and perceived competence of skilled nurses compared with novice nurses. However, skilled nurses recognized that they could provide better developmentally supportive care than novice nurses. Perceived competence was positively correlated with perceived importance and perception. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE AND RESEARCH: Systematic educational programs that can enhance developmentally supportive care competence should be provided to NICU staff nurses. These must clarify the importance of developmentally supportive care and improve NICU nurses' knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy, and intentions.

This study examined the effect of an intervention on coping knowledge among fifth- and sixth-grade elementary schoolchildren who received smartphone-delivered emergency preparedness education. This was a quasi-experimental study using a pre-/posttest design. Eighty-six children were recruited to participate. The children in the experimental group ( n = 44) received smartphone-delivered emergency preparedness education while those in the control group ( n = 42) received traditional lecture-centered education. Data were analyzed using a repeated-measured analysis of variance. Subsequently, the experimental group scored significantly higher than the control group on coping knowledge ( F = 7.96, f = .31, p = .010). The use of technology such as smartphone-delivered emergency preparedness education may be effective to improve their coping knowledge of fifth- and sixth-grade elementary schoolchildren.

UNLABELLED: This study was conducted to identify the effects of kangaroo care on the physiological functions of preterm infants, maternal-infant attachment, and maternal stress. DESIGN AND METHODS: For this study, a quasi-experiment design was used with a nonequivalent control group, and a pre- and post-test. Data were collected from preterm infants with corrected gestational ages of ≥33weeks who were hospitalized between May and October 2011. Twenty infants were assigned to the experimental group and 20 to the control group. As an intervention, kangaroo care was provided in 30-min sessions conducted thrice a week for a total of 10 times. The collected data were analyzed by using the t test, repeated-measures ANOVA, and the ANCOVA test. RESULTS: After kangaroo care, the respiration rate significantly differed between the two groups (F=5.701, p=.020). The experimental group had higher maternal-infant attachment scores (F=25.881, p<.001) and lower maternal stress scores (F=47.320, p<.001) than the control group after the test. In other words, kangaroo care showed significantly positive effects on stabilizing infant physiological functions such as respiration rate, increasing maternal-infant attachment, and reducing maternal stress. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that kangaroo care can be used to promote emotional bonding and support between mothers and their babies, and to stabilize the physiological functions of premature babies. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Kangaroo care may be one of the most effective nursing interventions in the neonatal intensive care unit for the care of preterm infants and their mothers.

The purpose of this study was to test the effects of healthy life practice (HLP) education on reported health behaviors, including health promotion, disease prevention, and safety among fourth-grade elementary school students. A quasi-experimental, pretest/posttest design was used. The 101 recruited participants from two schools were assigned to the intervention group (n = 51) that received 10 health education sessions and the control group (n = 50) that did not receive the intervention. Significant differences in health behaviors were observed between the two groups (t = 2.563, p = .012), specifically for disease prevention (t = 2.178, p = .032) and safety (t = 2.711, p = .008). However, no significant between-group differences were observed in health promotion (t = .270, p = .788). Educational interventions aimed at changing HLP-related health behaviors may be effective for elementary schoolchildren.

Background: Developmental support care for preterm infants contributes toward their health and shortens their hospital stay. In many countries, programs for preterm infant development such as Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program and Philips Wee Care have not yet been disseminated. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of neonatal intensive care unit nurses' competence enhancement program for developmental support care of preterm infants. Methods: A quasi-experimental study using pretest and posttest designs with a nonequivalent control group was conducted in five neonatal intensive care units of university hospitals in South Korea. A total of 39 nurses (20 in the experimental group and 19 in the control group) participated. The program was composed of family support, healing environmental support, stress and pain management, sleep support, position support, nutrition optimization, skin protection, and sensory stimulation. In addition, four sessions were provided using Zoom, Padlet, online quizzes, and performance diaries. Results: For nursing knowledge, no significant interaction effect was observed between groups and time (F = 1.38, p = .258). However, the main effect on the group (F = 10.81, p < .001), and the main effect of time were significant (F = 12.97, p < .001). For nursing attitude, the interaction effect between group and time (F = 2.06, p = .142), and the main effect on the group were not significant (F = 0.23, p = .635). Finally, for nursing competence, the interaction effect between group and time was significant (F = 4.46, p = .019). Conclusions: The educational program was effective in improving nursing knowledge and competence in developmentally supportive care for preterm infants. This program is expected to contribute toward the growth and development of premature infants.

AIM: To identify the effectiveness of a combined intervention of 25° upper body elevation and hand massage in patients undergoing radiofrequency catheter ablation. DESIGN: A quasi-experimental study using a non-equivalent control group pre-test-post-test design. METHODS: A total of 46 participants were assigned to an intervention group (N = 21) and a control group (N = 25). To test the effectiveness of the combined intervention, the major variables were low back pain and discomfort, including physical, psychological and environmental factors. RESULTS: The control group had low back pain, and the physical, psychological and environmental discomfort scores increased over time, whereas the experimental group showed low back pain, and the physical, psychological and environmental discomfort scores were statistically significantly decreased. The combined intervention can be applied in clinical practice not only in patients who have undergone radiofrequency catheter ablation but also in those who require an immobile position due to puncture of a femoral blood vessel.

In self-directed learning, students take the initiative to identify learning goals, choose learning strategies, and evaluate learning outcomes. This study aimed to explore the effects of a self-directed clinical practicum on nursing students' self-confidence and satisfaction with the clinical practicum. This mixed-methods study used a non-equivalent control group with a pre- and post-test quasi-experimental design and content analysis. Participants were 111 nursing students (experimental group = 55, control group = 56). Quantitative (self-confidence and satisfaction with the clinical practicum) and qualitative (reflective diaries) data were collected. The experimental group had significantly increased scores for self-confidence and satisfaction with the clinical practicum compared with the control group. Four themes regarding the experience of the self-directed clinical practicum were identified: perceived linking of academic knowledge and practice, perceived development of nursing competency, enjoying the clinical practicum, and establishing nursing identity as a student. The self-directed clinical practicum developed as part of this study was found to be an effective education method for nursing students.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop and evaluate a mobile application focusing on developmental support care for infants born prematurely. METHODS: An application was developed using the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation model. In the analysis phase, previous research was evaluated through big data text-mining and a literature review. In the design phase, the preliminary content of the application was designed, and the content validity and comprehension were verified. A hybrid application was developed and used by eight experts and ten users, who evaluated the layout of the mobile application and their satisfaction with it. RESULTS: The content of the designed application comprised a diary, customized information, developmental play, and community. The mean scores for layout were 3.73±0.47 and 3.43±0.68 out of 4 points among the experts and users, respectively. Users' mean satisfaction score was 3.70±0.70 out of 5 points. CONCLUSION: The information provided by the mobile application was evaluated as consistent and systematic. The application was also found to be satisfactory by infants' parents. The mobile application developed through this study is expected to be effective in supporting the development of children born prematurely.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the gaps in research related to developmentally supportive care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The ultimate goal was to explore directions of further research on developmentally supportive care for premature patients. METHODS: The Arksey and O'Malley scoping review method was used. Articles on developmentally supportive care for preterm infants in the NICU, written in English or Korean, were identified through electronic search engines. A total of 279 papers were identified in the initial search, of which 22 full-text papers were included in this review. RESULTS: Several nursing studies have been published in the past 5 years. The important elements of developmentally supportive care were family-centered care and management of the NICU environment. The primary developmentally supportive care interventions were training programs to promote the care competency of NICU nurses. CONCLUSION: It is necessary to actively develop comprehensive developmental support interventions that consider the various elements of developmentally supportive care for preterm infants. Additional studies should be done to develop programs that provide direct intervention for premature infant and their families.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to conduct a scoping review of studies on interventions for the prevention of safety accidents involving infants. METHODS: The scoping review method by Arksey and O'Malley was used to conduct an overview based on information spanning a wide range of fields. Multiple electronic databases, PubMed, CINAHL, RISS, and KISS, were searched for articles written in English or Korean published from 2012 to the present on safety accident prevention interventions. A total of 2,137 papers were found, and 20 papers were ultimately analyzed. RESULTS: Most studies were conducted in the United States (55.0%) and in the medical field (45.0%), and most were experimental studies (35.0%). The results were organized across five categories: 1) preventive precautions, 2) characteristics of children's developmental stages, 3) encouraging voluntary participation, 4) continuity of interventions, and 5) teaching methods. CONCLUSION: Safety accident prevention interventions should cover the establishment of a safe home environment, include voluntary participation, and provide routine follow-up interventions. Additionally, practical training and teaching methods that incorporate feedback rather than a lectureoriented approach should be adopted.

The purpose of this study was to describe the trends of research on follow-up care after neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) graduation for children born preterm. This scoping review was conducted according to Arksey and O'Malley's guidelines. Reviewed studies were searched in PubMed, CHINAHL, and Web of Science. Fifteen studies were analyzed according to general characteristics, elements of follow-up care after NICU graduation, and characteristics of follow-up care intervention after NICU graduation. Most research was conducted in the medical field (60%), with experimental studies (40%) being the majority, and a few studies focused on families (3%) and parents (3%). The major follow-up care after NICU graduation elements were growth/developmental monitoring and support, continuity of care, parent- and family-centered elements, and a multidisciplinary approach. The intervention methods included home visits, phone calls, video calls, and applications. In addition, the intervention period ranged from two weeks to three years. It is suggested that multidisciplinary research with interactive media for a various age of children over longer periods for further study.

BACKGROUND: Cinenurducation, a film-based approach to nursing education that incorporates student-centered, problem-solving, experiential, and reflective learning strategies, allows students to experience a variety of indirect experiences and improves critical thinking and self-reflection through discussion. PURPOSE: The aims of this study were, first, to employ a cinenurducation approach to help instill a proper professional nursing identity in second-year nursing students and, second, to examine the effects of this approach on the perception of nursing, satisfaction with major, and professional nursing values of the participants. METHODS: An experimental, pretest-and-posttest design was used to test the primary variables, including perception of nursing, satisfaction with major, and professional nursing values. The nursing educational program was developed based on the learning concepts of cinenurducation and the core concepts of nursing. The program, which included six films, addressed the following concepts: Me Before You (problem solving and professionalism), Testament of Youth (nursing management and professionalism), Girl, Interrupted (interpersonal skills and nursing knowledge), Hungry Heart (interpersonal skills and problem solving), Iris (nursing knowledge and problem solving), and Chronic (nursing knowledge and cooperation). The experimental group (n = 14) participated in the 8-week educational program, and the control group (n = 15) did not. RESULTS: Perception of nursing, satisfaction with major, and professional nursing values all improved significantly more in the experimental group than in the control group, with large effects observed. CONCLUSIONS: Cinenurducation is an effective approach to promoting professional nursing identity in nursing students. Educators should incorporate films into nursing education. In addition, nursing education should incorporate a variety of educational materials to provide students with opportunities for reflective learning.

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of perceived helicopter parenting, critical thinking disposition, cognitive ability, and learning motivation on learning behavior in nursing students in South Korea. The participants in this study were 149 sophomore nursing students from two universities using convenience sampling. The two universities were similar in terms of type, curricula, and size. Data were collected from October to November 2017 using self-reported questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and hierarchical multiple regression with SPSS 22.0. The mean score of perceived helicopter parenting was 3.06 ± 0.65 out of six points. The levels of critical thinking disposition, cognitive ability, learning motivation, and learning behavior were medium. Factors affecting learning behavior were learning motivation (ß = 0.40, p < 0.001), cognitive ability (ß = 0.26, p = 0.001), and critical thinking disposition (ß = 0.25, p = 0.001). These variables explained 32% of the variance in learning behavior (F = 18.21, p < 0.001). Teaching methods are necessary to increase the critical thinking disposition and learning competence of nursing students. In addition, it is important to consider the learning motivation of nursing students for effective learning.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the supportive care needs of parents of preterm children in South Korea using text data from a portal site. METHODS: In total, 628 online newspaper articles and 1,966 social network service posts published between January 1 and December 31, 2019 were analyzed. The procedures in this study were conducted in the following order: keyword selection, data collection, morpheme analysis, keyword analysis, and topic modeling. RESULTS: The term "yirundung-yi", which is a native Korean word referring to premature infants, was confirmed to be a useful term for parents. The following four topics were identified as the supportive care needs of parents of preterm children: 1) a vague fear of caring for a baby upon imminent neonatal intensive care unit discharge, 2) real-world difficulties encountered while caring for preterm children, 3) concerns about growth and development problems, and 4) anxiety about possible complications. CONCLUSION: Supportive care interventions for parents of preterm children should include general parenting methods for babies. A team composed of multidisciplinary experts must support the individual growth and development of preterm children and manage the complications of prematurity using highly accessible media.

BACKGROUND: The Nursing Profession Self-Efficacy (NPSE) scale was developed to reflect the characteristics of nursing tasks. This study was conducted to validate the Korean version of the NPSE (K-NPSE) scale. METHODS: The NPSE scale with nineteen items was translated into Korean after forward and backward translation according to Devellis' guideline. For the exploratory factor analysis (EFA), 298 nurses participated and criterion-related validity and reliability were verified. For the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), 218 other nurses participated. Content validity, criterion-related validity, and internal consistency reliability were examined. Additionally, construct validity was examined. SPSS and AMOS were used for the data analyses. RESULTS: Nineteen items were selected after evaluating the content and cognitive validity and comprised three factors: "Professional (10 items)", "Advocating (4)", and "Caring (5)". Construct validity was supported by the CFA. Criterion-related validity was supported by comparison with the General Self-Efficacy Test (r = 0.43, p < 0.001). Cronbach's alpha of the K-NPSE was 0.93. CONCLUSIONS: Study findings indicate that the K-NPSE could be useful for assessing nurses' self-efficacy. The K-NPSE may be used as a valuable reference for developing programs or policies that promote nursing professionals. It is expected that continued use of this scale in various clinical settings to further generalize and validate the scale.

This study develops a scale that assesses the self-efficacy of Sri Lankan nursing educators in assuming the roles of nursing educators and validates its psychometric properties. This methodological research followed the DeVellis Scale Development Model, which involves six steps of instrument development and evaluation. Preliminary items were determined through a literature review and focus group interviews with nine Sri Lankan nursing experts. The experts, comprising five South Korean and two Sri Lankan nursing professors, tested the scale's content validity. Moreover, 15 nursing educators participated in a pilot study, and 126 educators took part in the main survey. To evaluate the scale's validity and reliability, the data from a preliminary questionnaire were analyzed using SPSS/IBM and AMOS 24.0. Further, construct validity was tested using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, and reliability was tested by calculating Cronbach's alpha and performing split-half testing. Finally, 39 items under four themes, "clinical mentorship" (18 items), "research" (10), "teaching" (6), and "advising" (5), explained 63.5% of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis results revealed an acceptable model fit for the final scale. The developed scale achieved a Cronbach's alpha value of 0.97. Thus, the psychometrical properties of the scale measuring Sri Lankan nursing educators' self-efficacy were comprehensively evaluated and found acceptable. The developed scale will be useful in guideline development or studies regarding the self-efficacy of nursing educators' roles in developing countries with similar context to Sri Lanka.

This study examined the effects of nurse-parent partnership, nurses' attitude to families' importance in nursing care, and nursing professional self-efficacy on the quality of pediatric nursing care. BACKGROUND: The quality of pediatric nursing care based on family-centered care is defined by the qualitative care behavior of nurses from the perspective of hospitalized children and their families. METHODS: The participants were 218 nurses in pediatric wards in hospitals. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and path analysis. RESULTS: Among the factors influencing the perceived quality of respect, explanation, and skillfulness, nurse experience showed the greatest total effect. The nurse-parent partnership had the greatest direct effect on the quality of respect and the greatest total effect on kindness. Nursing professional self-efficacy showed the greatest direct effect on explanation and the largest total effect on nurse-parent partnership and nurses' attitude to families' importance in nursing care. CONCLUSIONS: To improve the quality of pediatric nursing care, it is necessary to provide a working environment in which pediatric nurses can work continuously. Hospitals should also develop a program that enables proper collaboration between nurses and parents of hospitalized children and improves nursing professional self-efficacy.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate empathy, awareness, and attitudes toward violence among elementary school students. METHODS: The participants were 195 fifth and sixth grade students in Y elementary school. The data collection period was from June 24 to July 4, 2019. RESULTS: Empathy scores significantly differed according to participants' gender and need for education on violence prevention. Attitudes towards violence (permissive and neglectful) significantly differed according to students' grade and need for education on violence prevention. Empathy was negatively correlated with permissive attitudes toward violence (r=-.26, p<.001) and neglectful attitudes toward violence (r=-.24, p=.001). RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to review pain alleviation intervention for Korean pediatric inpatients with reference to Kolcaba's Theory of Comfort. METHODS: Whittemore and Knafl's integrative review methods were used. Articles published in Korean or English were identified through electronic search engines and scholarly web sites. Scientific, peer-reviewed articles published between 2006 and 2019 were included in this review. Twenty-seven articles that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed. RESULTS: Among the 27 selected studies, three were descriptive, while 24 were interventional studies related to pain alleviation interventions. Pain alleviation interventions showed three attributes: identifying pain triggers and the child's response to pain, effective strategies for pain relief, and nurses' competence in pain management. CONCLUSION: The three attributes of pain alleviation interventions using the theory of comfort shown in this study were identified as important factors for obtaining evidence-based data on how to enhance the comfort of hospitalized pediatric patients. In addition, the attributes of pain alleviation interventions should be considered for hospitalized pediatric patients and their family members.
