RESUMO

The recently discovered interlayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (IL-DMI) in multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy favors canting of spins in the in-plane direction. It could thus stabilize intriguing spin textures such as Hopfions. A key requirement for nucleation is to control the IL-DMI. Therefore, we investigate the influence of an electric current on a synthetic antiferromagnet with growth-induced IL-DMI. The IL-DMI is quantified by using out-of-plane hysteresis loops of the anomalous Hall effect while applying a static in-plane magnetic field at varied azimuthal angles. We observe a shift in the azimuthal dependence with an increasing current, which we conclude to originate from the additional in-plane symmetry breaking introduced by the current flow. Fitting the angular dependence, we demonstrate the presence of an additive current-induced term that linearly increases the IL-DMI in the direction of current flow. This opens the possibility of easily manipulating 3D spin textures by currents.

Wearable ionoskins are one of the representative examples of the many useful applications offered by deformable stimuli-responsive sensory platforms. Herein, ionotronic thermo-mechano-multimodal response sensors are proposed, which can independently detect changes in temperature and mechanical stimuli without crosstalk. For this purpose, mechanically robust, thermo-responsive ion gels composed of poly(styrene-ran-n-butyl methacrylate) (PS-r-PnBMA, copolymer gelator) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide ([BMI][TFSI], ionic liquid) are prepared. The optical transmittance change arising from the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) phenomenon between PnBMA and [BMI][TFSI] is exploited to track the external temperature, creating a new concept of the temperature coefficient of transmittance (TCT). The TCT of this system (-11.5% °C-1 ) is observed to be more sensitive to temperature fluctuations than the conventional metric of temperature coefficient of resistance. The tailoring molecular characteristics of gelators selectively improved the mechanical robustness of the gel, providing an additional application opportunity for strain sensors. This functional sensory platform, which is attached to a robot finger, can successfully detect thermal and mechanical environmental changes through variations in the optical (transmittance) and electrical (resistance) properties of the ion gel, respectively, indicating the high practicality of on-skin multimodal wearable sensors.

Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) have unique characteristics, such as self-renewal and pluripotency, which are distinct from those of other cell types. These characteristics of hESCs are tightly regulated by complex signaling mechanisms. In this study, we demonstrate that yes-associated protein (YAP) functions in an hESC-specific manner to maintain self-renewal and survival in hESCs. hESCs were highly sensitive to YAP downregulation to promote cell survival. Interestingly, hESCs displayed dynamic changes in YAP expression in response to YAP downregulation. YAP was critical for the maintenance of self-renewal. Additionally, the function of YAP in maintenance of self-renewal and cell survival was hESC-specific. Doxycycline upregulated YAP in hESCs and attenuated the decreased cell survival induced by YAP downregulation. However, decreased expression of self-renewal markers triggered by YAP downregulation and neural/cardiac differentiation were affected by doxycycline treatment. Collectively, the results reveal the mechanism underlying the role of YAP and the novel function of doxycycline in hESCs.

One of the major obstacles to realizing spintronic devices such as MESO logic devices is the small signal magnitude used for magnetization readout, making it important to find materials with high spin-to-charge conversion efficiency. Although intermixing at the junction of two materials is a widely occurring phenomenon, its influence on material characterization and the estimation of spin-to-charge conversion efficiencies are easily neglected or underestimated. Here, we demonstrate all-electrical spin-to-charge conversion in BixSe1-x nanodevices and show how the conversion efficiency can be overestimated by tens of times depending on the adjacent metal used as a contact. We attribute this to the intermixing-induced compositional change and the properties of a polycrystal that lead to drastic changes in resistivity and spin Hall angle. Strategies to improve the spin-to-charge conversion signal in similar structures for functional devices are discussed.

Accurate measurement of bladder volume is an important tool for evaluating bladder function. In this study, we propose a wearable bladder scanner system that can continuously measure bladder volume in daily life for urinary patients who need urodynamic studies. The system consisted of a 2-D array, which included integrated forward-looking piezoelectric transducers with thin substrates. This study aims to estimate the volume of the bladder using a small number of piezoelectric transducers. A least-squares method was implemented to optimize an ellipsoid in a quadratic surface equation for bladder volume estimation. Ex-vivo experiments of a pig bladder were conducted to validate the proposed system. This work presents the potential of the approach for wearable bladder monitoring, which has similar measurement accuracy compared to the commercial bladder imaging system. The wearable bladder scanner can be improved further as electronic voiding diaries by adding a few more features to the current function.

CpG, 5'-C-phosphate-G-3', islands (CGIs) have long been known for their association with enhancers, silencers, and promoters, and for their epigenetic signatures. They are maintained in embryonic stem cells (ESCs) in a poised but inactive state via the formation of bivalent chromatin containing both active and repressive marks. CGIs also occur within coding sequences, where their functional role has remained obscure. Intragenic CGIs (iCGIs) are largely absent from housekeeping genes, but they are found in all genes associated with organ development and cell lineage control. In this paper, we investigated the epigenetic status of iCGIs and found that they too reside in bivalent chromatin in ESCs. Cell type-specific DNA methylation of iCGIs in differentiated cells was linked to the loss of both the H3K4me3 and H3K27me3 marks, and disruption of physical interaction with promoter regions, resulting in transcriptional activation of key regulators of differentiation such as PAXs, HOXs, and WNTs. The differential epigenetic modification of iCGIs appears to be mediated by cell type-specific transcription factors distinct from those bound by promoter, and these transcription factors may be involved in the hypermethylation of iCGIs upon cell differentiation. iCGIs thus play a key role in the cell type-specific regulation of transcription.

An ultrasound transducer was fabricated by dropping a multi-walled carbon nanotube solution containing a mixture of carbon nanotubes and ethoxyethanol directly on the surface of polyethylene microspheres. The frequency modulation depended on the diameter of the polyethylene microspheres. To investigate this relationship, three types of polyethylene microspheres with different diameters were used in simulations and experiments. These specimens were attached to polydimethylsiloxane and glass plates. A comparison revealed that the 50 µm diameter polyethylene spheres coated with carbon nanotubes had the highest ultrasound frequency. This work showed that smaller polyethylene microspheres generate higher ultrasound frequencies.

In this study, piezoelectric acoustic absorbers employing two receivers and one transmitter with a feedback controller were evaluated. Based on the target and resonance frequencies of the system, resonance and non-resonance models were designed and fabricated. With a lateral size less than half the wavelength, the model had stacked structures of lossy acoustic windows, polyvinylidene difluoride, and lead zirconate titanate-5A. The structures of both models were identical, except that the resonance model had steel backing material to adjust the center frequency. Both models were analyzed in the frequency and time domains, and the effectiveness of the absorbers was compared at the target and off-target frequencies. Both models were fabricated and acoustically and electrically characterized. Their reflection reduction ratios were evaluated in the quasi-continuous-wave and time-transient modes.

With the development of wearable devices, strain sensors have attracted large interest for the detection of human motion, movement, and breathing. Various strain sensors consisting of stretchable conductive materials have been investigated based on resistance and capacitance differences according to the strain. However, this method requires multiple electrodes for multipoint detection. We propose a strain sensor capable of multipoint detection with a single electrode, based on the ultrasound pulse-echo method. It consists of several transmitters of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and a single polyvinylidene fluoride receiver. The strain sensor was fabricated using CNTs embedded in stretchable polydimethylsiloxane. The received data are characterized by the different times of transmission from the CNTs of each point depending on the strain, i.e., the sensor can detect the positions of the CNTs. This study demonstrates the application of the multipoint strain sensor with a single electrode for measurements up to a strain of 30% (interval of 1%). We considered the optical and acoustic energy losses in the sensor design. In addition, to evaluate the utility of the sensor, finger bending with three-point CNTs and flexible phantom bending with six-point CNTs for the identification of an S-curve having mixed expansion and compression components were carried out.

Intensive research on photoacoustics (PA) for imaging of the living human body, including the skin, vessels, and tumors, has recently been conducted. We propose a PA measurement system based on a capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) with waterless coupling, short measurement time (<1 s), backward light irradiation, and a low-profile ultrasonic receiver unit (<1 cm). We fabricate a 64-element CMUT ring array with 6.2 mm diameter and 10.4 MHz center frequency in air, and 100% yield and uniform element response. To validate the PA tissue characterization, we employ pencil lead and red ink as solid and liquid models, respectively, and a living body to target moles and vessels. The system implements a near-field imaging system consisting of a 6 mm polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matching layer between the object and CMUT, which has a 3.7 MHz center frequency in PDMS. Experiments were performed in a waterless contact on the PDMS and the laser was irradiated with a 1 cm diameter. The experimental results show the feasibility of this near-field PA imaging system for position and depth detection of skin, mole, vessel cells, etc. Therefore, a system applicable to a low-profile compact biomedical device is presented.

The spin field-effect transistor, an essential building block for spin information processing, shows promise for energy-efficient computing. Despite steady progress, it suffers from a low-output signal because of low spin injection and detection efficiencies. We demonstrate that this low-output obstacle can be overcome by utilizing direct and inverse spin Hall effects for spin injection and detection, respectively, without a ferromagnetic component. The output voltage of our all-electric spin Hall transistor is about two orders of magnitude larger than that of previously reported spin transistors based on ferromagnets or quantum point contacts. Moreover, the symmetry of the spin Hall effect allows all-electric spin Hall transistors to effectively mimic n-type and p-type devices, opening a way of realizing the complementary functionality.

Fingerprint imaging has been widely used in biometric identification systems. This work presents a photoacoustic (PA) fingerprint imaging system that provides acoustic resolution using a pulsed laser and focused ultrasound transducer operating as a receiver. This PA system can measure dry fingers with a wide-range laser field based on the differences in the ultrasound coupling between the fingertip areas contacting and not contacting a solid plate. To demonstrate and validate the image accuracy of the PA system, PA fingerprint images were compared to images captured using a pulse-echo ultrasound system and an ink-pressed fingerprint scan.

The applied field induced Zeeman effect interferes with Rashba effect in a quantum well system. The angle dependence of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation shows that the in-plane term of the applied field changes the intrinsic Rashba induced spin splitting. The total effective spin-orbit interaction parameter is determined by the vector sum of the Rashba field and the applied field.

As CMOS technologies face challenges in dimensional and voltage scaling, the demand for novel logic devices has never been greater, with spin-based devices offering scaling potential, at the cost of significantly high switching energies. Alternatively, magnetoelectric materials are predicted to enable low-power magnetization control, a solution with limited device-level results. Here, we demonstrate voltage-based magnetization switching and reading in nanodevices at room temperature, enabled by exchange coupling between multiferroic BiFeO3 and ferromagnetic CoFe, for writing, and spin-to-charge current conversion between CoFe and Pt, for reading. We show that, upon the electrical switching of the BiFeO3, the magnetization of the CoFe can be reversed, giving rise to different voltage outputs. Through additional microscopy techniques, magnetization reversal is linked with the polarization state and antiferromagnetic cycloid propagation direction in the BiFeO3. This study constitutes the building block for magnetoelectric spin-orbit logic, opening a new avenue for low-power beyond-CMOS technologies.

BACKGROUND: Class III ß-tubulin (TUBB3) is a prognostic marker in various tumors, but the role of TUBB3 in advanced gastric cancer is not clearly defined. We analyzed the significance of TUBB3 expression, along with that of excision repair cross-complementation group 1 (ERCC1) in recurrent and metastatic gastric cancer patients receiving taxane-based first-line palliative chemotherapy. METHODS: We reviewed the cases of 146 patients with advanced gastric adenocarcinoma who received taxane-based first-line palliative chemotherapy between 2004 and 2010 at Chonnam National University Hwasun Hospital (Gwangju, Korea). Immunohistochemical staining for TUBB3 and ERCC1 was performed using paraffin wax-embedded tumor tissues. We evaluated the patients' response to chemotherapy, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: In total, 146 patients with advanced gastric cancer received docetaxel and cisplatin (n = 15) or paclitaxel and cisplatin (n = 131). The median PFS was significantly shorter for patients with high-level TUBB3 expression than for patients with low-level TUBB3 expression (3.63 vs. 6.67 months, P = 0.001). OS was not associated with TUBB3 expression (13.1 vs. 13.1 months, P = 0.769). By multivariate analysis, only TUBB3 was related to a shorter PFS (HR 2.74, 95% CI 1.91-3.91, P = 0.001). Patients with high-level ERCC1 expression showed a lower response rate than patients with low-level ERCC1 expression (24 vs. 63.2%, P = 0.001); however, ERCC1 had no clinical effect on PFS or OS. CONCLUSIONS: TUBB3 was a strong predictive marker in recurrent and metastatic gastric cancer patients receiving taxane-based first-line palliative chemotherapy. No clinical impact of ERCC1 was evident in this setting.

In this study, accelerated chloride diffusion tests are performed on ordinary Portland cement (OPC), ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), and fly ash (FA) concretes aged 4-6 years. Passed charge is evaluated according to ASTM-C-1202 for 12 mixtures, considering water-binder (W/B) ratios (0.37, 0.42, and 0.47), GGBFS replacement rates (0%, 30%, 50%), and FA replacement rates (0% and 30%). The effects of aged days on passed charge reduction behavior are quantified through repetitive regression analysis. Among existing machine learning (ML) models, linear, lasso, and ridge models are used to analyze the correlation of aged days and mix properties with passed charge. Passed charge analysis considering long-term age shows a significant variability decrease of passed charge by W/B ratio with increasing age and added admixtures (GGBFS and FA). Furthermore, the higher the water-binder ratio in GGBFS and FA concretes, the greater the decrease in passed charge due to aged days. The ML model-based regression analysis shows high correlation when compressive strength and independent variables are considered together. Future work includes a correlational analysis between mixture properties and chloride ingress durability performance using deep learning models based on the time series properties of evaluation data.

Hepatocellular carcinoma is a major health burden, and though various treatments through much research are available, difficulties in early diagnosis and drug resistance to chemotherapy-based treatments render several ineffective. Cancer stem cell model has been used to explain formation of heterogeneous cell population within tumor mass, which is one of the underlying causes of high recurrence rate and acquired chemoresistance, highlighting the importance of CSC identification and understanding the molecular mechanisms of CSC drivers. Extracellular CSCmarkers such as CD133, CD90 and EpCAM have been used successfully in CSC isolation, but studies have indicated that increasingly complex combinations are required for accurate identification. Pseudogene-derived long non-coding RNAs are useful candidates as intracellular CSC markers - factors that regulate pluripotency and self-renewal - given their cancer-specific expression and versatile regulation across several levels. Here, we present the use of microarray data to identify stemness-associated factors in liver cancer, and selection of sole pseudogenederived lncRNA ZNF204P for experimental validation. ZNF204P knockdown impairs cell proliferation and migration/invasion. As the cytosolic ZNF204P shares miRNA binding sites with OCT4 and SOX2, well-known drivers of pluripotency and self-renewal, we propose that ZNF204P promotes tumorigenesis through the miRNA-145-5p/OCT4, SOX2 axis. Despite numerous observations regarding the relationship between DNA methylation changes and cancer progression, only a few genes have been verified as diagnostic biomarkers of colorectal cancer (CRC). To more practically detect methylation changes, we performed targeted bisulfite sequencing. Through co-analysis of RNA-seq, we identified cohort-specific DNA methylation markers: CpG islands of the intragenic regions of PDX1, EN2, and MSX1. We validated that these genes have oncogenic features in CRC and that their expression levels are increased in correlation with the hypermethylation of intragenic regions. The reliable depth of the targeted bisulfite sequencing data enabled us to design highly optimized quantitative methylation-specific PCR primer sets that can successfully detect subtle changes in the methylation levels of candidate regions. Furthermore, these methylation levels can divide CRC patients into two groups denoting good and poor prognoses. In this study, we present a streamlined workflow for screening clinically significant differentially methylated regions. Our discovery of methylation markers in the PDX1, EN2, and MSX1 genes suggests their promising performance as prognostic markers and their clinical application in CRC patients.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the mortality rates of 566,602 patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) based on sex, age, and the presence or absence of underlying diseases and determine whether the underlying disease provides prognostic information specifically related to death. METHODS: The mortality rate was evaluated using conditional probability to identify the significant factors, and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) using a multivariable logistic regression analysis were estimated. RESULTS: The mortality rate of patients with underlying health conditions was 12%, which was 4 times higher than that of patients without underlying health conditions. Furthermore, the mortality rates of women and men with underlying health conditions were 5.5 and 3.4 times higher than the mortality rates of patients without underlying health conditions, respectively. In a multivariable logistic regression analysis including sex, age, and underlying health conditions, male sex (OR: 1.83), age ≥ 41 y (ORs > 2.70), and underlying health conditions (OR: 2.20) were confirmed as risk factors for death. CONCLUSIONS: More attention should be paid to older patients with underlying diseases and male patients with underlying diseases as the probability of death in this population was significantly higher.

Topologically protected chiral skyrmions are an intriguing spin texture that has attracted much attention because of fundamental research and future spintronic applications. MnSi with a non-centrosymmetric structure is a well-known material hosting a skyrmion phase. To date, the preparation of MnSi crystals has been investigated by using special instruments with an ultrahigh vacuum chamber. Here, we introduce a facile way to grow MnSi films on a sapphire substrate using a relatively low vacuum environment of conventional magnetron sputtering. Although the as-grown MnSi films have a polycrystalline nature, a stable skyrmion phase in a broad range of temperatures and magnetic fields is observed via magnetotransport properties including phenomenological scaling analysis of the Hall resistivity contribution. Our findings provide not only a general way to prepare the materials possessing skyrmion phases but also insight into further research to stimulate more degrees of freedom in our inquisitiveness.
