RESUMO

The development of intrinsically stretchable electronics poses great challenges in synthesizing elastomeric conductors, semiconductors and dielectric materials. While a wide range of approaches, from special macrostructural engineering to molecular synthesis, have been employed to afford stretchable devices, this review surveys recent advancements in employing various morphological and nanostructural control methods to impart mechanical flexibility and/or to enhance electrical properties. The focus will be on (1) embedding percolation networks of one-dimensional conductive materials such as metallic nanowires and carbon nanotubes in an elastomer matrix to accommodate large external deformation without imposing a large strain along the one-dimensional materials, (2) design strategies to achieve intrinsically stretchable semiconductor materials that include direct blending of semiconductors with elastomers and synthesizing semiconductor polymers with appropriate side chains, backbones, cross-linking networks, and flexible blocks, and (3) employing interpenetrating polymer networks, bottlebrush structures and introducing inclusions in stretchable polymeric dielectric materials to improve electrical performance. Moreover, intrinsically stretchable electronic devices based on these materials, such as stretchable sensors, heaters, artificial muscles, optoelectronic devices, transistors and soft humanoid robots, will also be described. Limitations of these approaches and measures to overcome them will also be discussed.

Stretchable light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and electroluminescent capacitors have been reported to potentially bring new opportunities to wearable electronics; however, these devices lack in efficiency and/or stretchability. Here, a stretchable organometal-halide-perovskite quantum-dot LED with both high efficiency and mechanical compliancy is demonstrated. The hybrid device employs an ultrathin (<3 µm) LED structure conformed on a surface-wrinkled elastomer substrate. Its luminescent efficiency is up to 9.2 cd A-1 , which is 70% higher than a control diode fabricated on the rigid indium tin oxide/glass substrate. Mechanical deformations up to 50% tensile strain do not induce significant loss of the electroluminescent property. The device can survive 1000 stretch-release cycles of 20% tensile strain with small fluctuations in electroluminescent performance.

A light-emitting touch-responsive device (LETD) for instantaneous visualization of pressure mapping is reported. The LETD integrates an organometal halide perovskite polymer composite emissive layer and a flexible silver nanowire polyurethane composite transparent electrode. The composite emissive layer contains methylammonium lead bromide nanocrystals uniformly dispersed in a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) matrix and emits an intense green luminescence that peaks at 529 nm. The PEO matrix promotes the formation of small perovskite grains (∼20 nm) and a pinhole-free composite film with surface roughness of only 2.96 nm. The composite transparent electrode is separated from the emissive layer with a 100 µm thick spacer. When a local pressure is applied, a Schottky contact is formed instantaneously between the metal and the emissive layer, and electroluminescence is produced at voltages as low as 2.5 V and reaches 1030 cd/m2 at 6 V. The transparent LETD has approximately 68% transparency. It can be bent to a 6 mm radius when polyethylene terephthalate is used as the substrate. The perovskite LETD has fast response and can be pixelated to offer potential applications in robotics, motion detection, fingerprint devices, and interactive wallpapers.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) can serve as strong evidence in correlating biological pathways with human diseases. Although ischemic stroke has been found to be associated with many biological pathways, the genetic mechanism of ischemic stroke is still unclear. Here, we performed GWAS for a major subtype of stroke-small-vessel occlusion (SVO)-to identify potential genetic factors contributing to ischemic stroke. GWAS were conducted on 342 individuals with SVO stroke and 1,731 controls from a Han Chinese population residing in Taiwan. The study was replicated in an independent Han Chinese population comprising an additional 188 SVO stroke cases and 1,265 controls. Three SNPs (rs2594966, rs2594973, rs4684776) clustered at 3p25.3 in ATG7 (encoding Autophagy Related 7), with P values between 2.52 × 10-6 and 3.59 × 10-6, were identified. Imputation analysis also supported the association between ATG7 and SVO stroke. To our knowledge, this is the first GWAS to link stroke and autophagy. ATG7, which has been implicated in autophagy, could provide novel insights into the genetic basis of ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic stroke is a major cause of death and disability in the world. A major ischemic stroke subtype, large-vessel ischemic stroke (large artery atherosclerosis; LAA), has been shown to have some genetic components in individuals of European ancestry. However, it is not clear whether the genetic predisposition to LAA stroke varies among ethnicities. We sought to identify genetic factors that contribute to LAA stroke in 2 independent samples of Han Chinese individuals. METHODS AND RESULTS: Novel genetic variants that predispose individuals to LAA stroke were identified using a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 444 individuals with LAA stroke and 1727 controls in a Han Chinese population residing in Taiwan. The study was replicated in an independent Han Chinese population comprising an additional 319 cases and 1802 controls. We identified 5 single-nucleotide polymorphisms, including rs2415317 (P=3.10×10(-8)), rs934075 (P=4.00×10(-9)), rs944289 (P=3.57×10(-8)), rs2787417 (P=1.76×10(-8)), and rs1952706 (P=2.92×10(-8)), at one novel locus on chromosome 14q13.3 within PTCSC3 (encoding papillary thyroid carcinoma susceptibility candidate 3) that were associated with LAA stroke at genome-wide significance (P<5×10(-8)). CONCLUSIONS: Our data provide strong support for future studies on the role of PTCSC3 in the pathogenesis of LAA stroke and the association between LAA stroke development and thyroid function. In addition, these findings provide insights into the genetic basis of LAA stroke and identify a novel pathway that might be applicable for future therapeutic intervention.

Thin-film field-effect transistor is a fundamental component behind various mordern electronics. The development of stretchable electronics poses fundamental challenges in developing new electronic materials for stretchable thin-film transistors that are mechanically compliant and solution processable. Here we report the fabrication of transparent thin-film transistors that behave like an elastomer film. The entire fabrication is carried out by solution-based techniques, and the resulting devices exhibit a mobility of ∼30 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1), on/off ratio of 10(3)-10(4), switching current >100 µA, transconductance >50 µS and relative low operating voltages. The devices can be stretched by up to 50% strain and subjected to 500 cycles of repeated stretching to 20% strain without significant loss in electrical property. The thin-film transistors are also used to drive organic light-emitting diodes. The approach and results represent an important progress toward the development of stretchable active-matrix displays.

Highly efficient organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on multiple layers of vapor evaporated small molecules, indium tin oxide transparent electrode, and glass substrate have been extensively investigated and are being commercialized. The light extraction from the exciton radiative decay is limited to less than 30% due to plasmonic quenching on the metallic cathode and the waveguide in the multi-layer sandwich structure. Here we report a flexible nanocomposite electrode comprising single-walled carbon nanotubes and silver nanowires stacked and embedded in the surface of a polymer substrate. Nanoparticles of barium strontium titanate are dispersed within the substrate to enhance light extraction efficiency. Green polymer OLED (PLEDs) fabricated on the nanocomposite electrode exhibit a maximum current efficiency of 118 cd/A at 10,000 cd/m(2) with the calculated external quantum efficiency being 38.9%. The efficiencies of white PLEDs are 46.7 cd/A and 30.5%, respectively. The devices can be bent to 3 mm radius repeatedly without significant loss of electroluminescent performance. The nanocomposite electrode could pave the way to high-efficiency flexible OLEDs with simplified device structure and low fabrication cost.

Ganoderma lucidum, an oriental medicinal mushroom, has been widely used in Asia to promote health and longevity. LZ-8 is a protein derived from the fungus G. lucidum and has immunomodulatory capacities. In this study, we investigated the immune modulatory effects of rLZ-8 on human monocyte-derived DCs. Treatment of DC with rLZ-8 resulted in the enhanced cell-surface expression of CD80, CD86, CD83, and HLA-DR, as well as the enhanced production of IL-12 p40, IL-10, and IL-23, and the capacity for endocytosis was suppressed in DCs. In addition, treatment of DCs with rLZ-8 resulted in an enhanced, naïve T cell-stimulatory capacity and increased, naïve T cell secretion of IFN-gamma and IL-10. Neutralization with antibodies against TLR4 inhibited the rLZ-8-induced production of IL-12 p40 and IL-10 in DCs. rLZ-8 can stimulate TLR4 or TLR4/MD2-transfected HEK293 cells to produce IL-8. These results suggested an important role for TLR4 in signaling DCs upon incubation with rLZ-8. Further study showed that rLZ-8 was able to augment IKK, NF-kappaB activity, and also IkappaBalpha and MAPK phosphorylation. Further, inhibition of NF-kappaB by helenalin prevented the effects of rLZ-8 in the expression of CD80, CD86, CD83, and HLA-DR and production of IL-12 p40 and IL-10 in various degrees. To confirm the in vitro data, we investigated the effect of rLZ-8 further on antigen-specific antibody and cytokine production in BALB/c mice. Immunization with OVA/rLZ-8 showed that the anti-OVA IgG2a, IFN-gamma, and IL-2 were increased significantly compared with OVA alone in BALB/c mice. In conclusion, our experiments demonstrated that rLZ-8 can effectively promote the activation and maturation of immature DCs, preferring a Th1 response, suggesting that rLZ-8 may possess a potential effect in regulating immune responses.

The glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase gene of Flammulina velutipes was isolated. The complete gpd sequence (from ATG to TAA) was 1,489 bp in length and contained nine introns. The locations of these nine introns were similar to those of other basidiomycetes, which might reflect the evolutionary divergence of these mushrooms. The F. velutipes gpd gene was found to encode a protein of 339 amino acids and its putative amino acid sequence revealed a high similarity to an analogous protein deriving from other basidiomycetes. Results of Southern blot analysis suggested that there existed only one copy of the gpd gene in the genome of F. velutipes and that there was one typical TATA box and two CAAT boxes located in the 5' flanking region. The F. velutipes gpd promoter was fused to a hygromycin B phosphotransferase gene (hph) derived from Escherichia coli as a selection marker. Using the resulting construction, hph was efficiently transformed into F. velutipes by basidiospore electroporation. No false-positive antibiotic-resistant cultures were detected by PCR amplification and the hygromycin resistance trait was maintained stably during mitotic cell division for 3 months. Southern analysis of transformants indicated the integration of gene might occur by non-homologous recombination. This rapid and convenient electroporation procedure offers new prospects for the genetic manipulation and a tool for tagging genes of this important edible mushroom species.
