OBJECTIVE: Periodontitis is an inflammatory oral disease that occurs as a result of the damaging effects of the immune response against the subgingival microflora. Among the mechanisms involved, the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain, leucine-rich repeat-containing proteins family member NLRP3 (NLR family pyrin domain-containing 3), proposed as the key regulator of macrophage-induced inflammation, is strongly associated with periodontal disease due to the bacterial activators. This paper aimed to present key general concepts of NLRP3 inflammasome activation and regulation in periodontal disease. METHOD: A narrative review was conducted in order to depict the current knowledge on the relationship between NLRP3 inflammasome activity and periodontal disease. In vitro and in situ studies were retrieved and commented based on their relevance in the field. RESULTS: The NLRP3 inflammasome activity stimulated by periodontal microbiota drive periodontal disease pathogenesis and progression. This occurs through the release of proinflammatory cytokines IL-1ß, IL-18, and DAMPs (damage-associated molecular pattern molecules) following inflammasome activation. Moreover, the tissue expression of NLRP3 is dysregulated by oral microbiota, further exacerbating periodontal inflammation. CONCLUSION: The review provides new insights into the relationship between the NLRP3 inflammasome activity and periodontal disease pathogenesis, highlighting the roles and regulatory mechanism of inflammatory molecules involved in the disease process.

Background and Objectives: The ever more complex modern dental education requires permanent adaptation to expanding medical knowledge and new advancements in digital technologies as well as intensification of interdisciplinary collaboration. Our study presents a newly developed computerized method allowing virtual case simulation on modular digital dental models and 3D-printing of the obtained digital models; additionally, undergraduate dental students' opinion on the advanced method is investigated in this paper. Materials and Methods: Based on the digitalization of didactic dental models, the proposed method generates modular digital dental models that can be easily converted into different types of partial edentulism scenarios, thus allowing the development of a digital library. Three-dimensionally printed simulated dental models can subsequently be manufactured based on the previously obtained digital models. The opinion of a group of undergraduate dental students (n = 205) on the proposed method was assessed via a questionnaire, administered as a Google form, sent via email. Results: The modular digital models allow students to perform repeated virtual simulations of any possible partial edentulism cases, to project 3D virtual treatment plans and to observe the subtle differences between diverse teeth preparations; the resulting 3D-printed models could be used in students' practical training. The proposed method received positive feedback from the undergraduate students. Conclusions: The advanced method is adequate for dental students' training, enabling the gradual design of modular digital dental models with partial edentulism, from simple to complex cases, and the hands-on training on corresponding 3D-printed dental models.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to assess the clinical and microbiological effects of a single subgingival administration of sodium hypochlorite gel (NaOCl) and compare it with 1% chlorhexidine (CHX) gel and a placebo gel following mechanical re-instrumentation during supportive periodontal therapy (SPT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-two patients who had been treated for stage III-IV periodontitis and enrolled in SPT were included in the study based on following criteria: (1) active periodontal therapy completed at least 6 months before enrollment in the study, (2) presence of at least 4 non-adjacent sites with probing pocket depths (PPDs) ≥ 4 mm with bleeding on probing (BOP), or presence of 5-8 mm PPDs with or without BOP. All sites presenting PPD ≥ 4 mm and BOP at baseline and 3-, 6-, and 9-month follow-up timepoints were subgingivally re-instrumented with ultrasounds. Selected patients were randomly assigned into three groups and treated additionally with a single subgingival administration of NaOCl gel (group A); 1% CHX gel (group B); and placebo gel (group C). Main outcome variable was pocket closure at 12 months. Secondary outcome variables were changes in mean PPD, BOP, and clinical attachment level (CAL) along with changes in the numbers of the following five keystone bacterial pathogens: Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (A.a.), Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.g.), Prevotella intermedia (P.i.), Tannerella forsythia (T.f.), and Treponema denticola (T.d.). RESULTS: At 12 months, pocket closure was obtained in 77.5% in the NaOCl treated sites. The reduction in PPD was higher with CHX than with NaOCl, although a statistically significant adjunctive effect for NaOCl (P = 0.028) was only observed in comparison with placebo only. Mean CAL improved in all groups and at all timepoints, compared to the baseline (P < 0.05). However, after 6 months, CAL gain was statistically significantly higher in the NaOCl treated group than following application of CHX (P = 0.0026). CONCLUSION: In SPT patients, a single adjunctive use of a NaOCl gel may provide benefits in controlling inflammation and residual pockets. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ISRCTN Registry of Clinical Trials (ISRCTN11387188). CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A baseline single application of NaOCl gel in conjunction with mechanical debridement may achieve substantial pocket closure in patients enrolled in SPT; treatment time, cost, and applicability considerations should be taken into account when selecting this therapy.

Dental pulp vitality is a desideratum for preserving the health and functionality of the tooth. In certain clinical situations that lead to pulp exposure, bioactive agents are used in direct pulp-capping procedures to stimulate the dentin-pulp complex and activate reparative dentinogenesis. Hydraulic calcium-silicate cements, derived from Portland cement, can induce the formation of a new dentin bridge at the interface between the biomaterial and the dental pulp. Odontoblasts are molecularly activated, and, if necessary, undifferentiated stem cells in the dental pulp can differentiate into odontoblasts. An extensive review of literature was conducted on MedLine/PubMed database to evaluate the histological outcomes of direct pulp capping with hydraulic calcium-silicate cements performed on animal models. Overall, irrespective of their physico-chemical properties and the molecular mechanisms involved in pulp healing, the effects of cements on tertiary dentin formation and pulp vitality preservation were positive. Histological examinations showed different degrees of dental pulp inflammatory response and complete/incomplete dentin bridge formation during the pulp healing process at different follow-up periods. Calcium silicate materials have the ability to induce reparative dentinogenesis when applied over exposed pulps, with different behaviors, as related to the animal model used, pulpal inflammatory responses, and quality of dentin bridges.

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of two different anti-inflammatory drugs (ketoprofen and prednisone) combined with an antibiotic (amoxicillin + clavulanic acid) and periodontal surgery on dental and periodontal parameters in patients with severe chronic periodontitis. In addition, salivary stress expressed by cortisol levels was assessed. Materials and Methods: An interventional study was performed on 22 periodontal subjects and 19 clinical healthy controls. The patients were divided in four groups, depending on treatment planning, as follows: eight patients received prednisone and antibiotherapy, associated with surgical periodontal therapy; seven patients received ketoprofen and antibiotherapy, associated with surgical periodontal therapy (group II); seven patients received only prednisone. Periodontal healthy patients underwent routine scaling and polishing. Bleeding on probing (BOP), dental mobility and salivary cortisol (ng/mL) were assessed before and after treatment. The means and standard deviations for the salivary cortisol levels (SCLs), dental and periodontal parameters were calculated for all groups using each patient as a unit of analysis. Results: Data analyses showed that the two different anti-inflammatory drugs associated with or without surgical therapy were efficient on inflammation periodontal parameters (BOP, dental mobility). Prednisone treatment alone was associated with a significant decrease of SCLs between pretreatment and post-treatment. Conclusions: In the present study, the effects of either of the anti-inflammatory drugs on inflammation evolution and salivary stress were comparable in patients undergoing antibiotherapy and surgical periodontal therapy.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of clinical forms in a group of oral lichen planus (OLP) patients and to investigate whether the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of patients with common clinical OLP forms differs significantly from that of other clinical forms of OLP and healthy patients, respectively. METHODS: OHRQoL was assessed using the Romanian version of the short form of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). OLP patients rated the pain they were currently experiencing on a visual analog scale (VAS). Statistics was performed using parametric and non-parametric tests and multiple linear regression. RESULTS: Eighty OLP patients and 80 healthy controls were enrolled. The most prevalent OLP clinical form was keratotic form (n = 39, 48.75%, group 1), followed by atrophic (31.25%), erosive-ulcerative (17.5%), and bullous (2.5%) forms, which were included in group 2 (n = 41). The OHRQoL did not differ significantly between group 1 and the other two groups. A negative social impact was reported on psychological discomfort domain for both OLP groups, as compared with healthy controls. VAS scores were significantly associated with OHIP total scores in group 1 (rho = 0.41, n = 39, p = 0.009, Spearman's correlation coefficient). Within the same group, significantly higher OHIP total scores were recorded in patients lacking academic education (p = 0.0086, Mann-Whitney U test). CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the most common clinical OLP form did not impact significantly the OHRQoL of OLP patients. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Psychological therapy and meeting the educational needs might improve the OHRQoL of patients with common clinical forms of OLP.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of innovative nanotechnologies in medicine and dentistry may initiate a need for curriculum revision at the universities. The aim of this study was to assess dental students' knowledge and attitudes related to nanotechnology. Covariates of students' intention to use nanomaterials in their future dental practice were evaluated using the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). METHODS: Dental students at Norwegian and Romanian Universities were invited to participate. A self-administered structured questionnaire including socio-demographics and Ajzen's TPB components was used. FINDINGS: A total of 212 out of 732 dental students participated in the survey: 52 Norwegian and 160 Romanian. Most students reported to have little knowledge about nanotechnology (Norwegians = 44.2% vs Romanians = 46.9%, P < .05). More than 90% of the students in both countries reported that they wanted to get more information about nanotechnology. Mean knowledge score was similar for Norwegian and Romanian students (4.4 ± 1.7 vs 4.2 ± 1.4, P > .05). Romanian students had more positive attitude, stronger subjective norms and stronger perceived behavioural control towards nanotechnology compared to their Norwegian counterparts. Intention to use nanomaterials in the total sample was most strongly influenced by attitude towards the use of dental nanomaterials (beta = 0.42, P < .001). CONCLUSION: Dental students in Norway and Romania demonstrated limited knowledge about nanotechnology. Intention to use nanomaterials was primarily influenced by attitudes. A clear desire for more information about the application of nanotechnology in dentistry was expressed by the respondents indicating a need for curriculum modification.

INTRODUCTION: The biomedical sciences (BMS) are a central part of the dental curriculum that underpins teaching and clinical practice in all areas of dentistry. Although some specialist groups have proposed curricula in their particular topic areas, there is currently no overarching view of what should be included in a BMS curriculum for undergraduate dental programmes. To address this, the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) convened a Special Interest Group (SIG) with representatives from across Europe to develop a consensus BMS curriculum for dental programmes. CURRICULUM: This paper summarises the outcome of the deliberations of this SIG and details a consensus view from the SIG of what a BMS curriculum should include. CONCLUSIONS: Given the broad nature of BMS applied to dentistry, this curriculum framework is advisory and seeks to provide programme planners with an indicative list of topics which can be mapped to specific learning objectives within their own curricula. As dentistry becomes increasingly specialised, these will change, or some elements of the undergraduate curriculum may move to the post-graduate setting. So, this document should be seen as a beginning and it will need regular review as BMS curricula in dentistry evolve.

RESUMO

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most frequent cancers, and to date, there have been very few drugs available that can improve survival, the most well-known being sorafenib. The pathogenesis of HCC is complex, involving multiple processes including abnormal cell and tissue regeneration, angiogenesis, genomic instability, cellular proliferation, and signaling pathway alterations. Capsaicin is a substance that holds increasingly high interest and is studied as a therapeutic option in a wide array of diseases. Several studies have investigated capsaicin roles in various stages of HCC oncogenesis. This paper aims to thoroughly detail the available information on the individual effects of capsaicin on the cellular mechanisms and pathways involved in HCC development, as well as investigate their possible cooperation and interferences. The synergistic antitumor effects of capsaicin and sorafenib are also addressed.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the susceptibility of a series of 33 Prevotella strains isolated from patients with abscesses in the head and neck spaces, presented to one Romanian hospital. The Etest was applied to determine the value of the minimum inhibitory concentrations for: penicillin G, ampicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanate, metronidazole and clindamycin. In addition, the beta-lactamase activity was detected by the chromogenic cephalosporin disc method. The results indicated that 11 isolates were resistant to both penicillin G and ampicillin due to the beta-lactamase production. All the 33 Prevotella strains were susceptible to the other 3 antimicrobial agents tested, except for only one penicillin G - ampicillin resistant isolate of Prevotella buccae (MIC > 32 and MIC = 12 mg/L, respectively), which showed high resistance to clindamycin (MIC > 256 mg/L) too. Our data underline the necessity for antimicrobial testing including monitoring of beta-lactamase production in cases of oro-maxillo-facial mixed anaerobic infections where antimicrobial treatment is required in addition to the surgical drainage. The results of the study indicated that amoxicillin-clavulanate, like metronidazole, was fully active against the tested Prevotella strains. However, local and multicentre surveys on drug resistance among the clinically significant anaerobic isolates should be carried out periodically.

Among the dental and maxillary anomalies, impacted teeth are frequently encountered. However, the incidence of impaction of maxillary first premolars is very low. Herewith, we report a rare case of impacted maxillary left first premolar, in a vertical position, with the apical two-thirds of the root situated in the angle between the medial and antero-lateral walls of the maxillary sinus. The persistence of the maxillary left primary canine was also observed. The cone beam computed tomography evaluation of the case identified the close proximity of the impacted tooth with the root of the permanent canine and the nasal fossa. The finding may be helpful to dental practitioners, not only to anticipate the difficulties which may occur during surgical interventions, but also to prevent possible complications, such as maxillary infections or root resorptions.

The suburothelium has received renewed interest because of its role in sensing bladder fullness. Various studies evaluated suburothelial myofibroblasts (MFs), interstitial cells (ICs), interstitial Cajal cells (ICCs) or telocytes (TCs), which resulted in inconsistencies in terminology and difficulties in understanding the suburothelial structure. In order to elucidate these issues, the use of electron microscopy seems to be an ideal choice. It was hypothesized that the cell population of the suburothelial band is heterogeneous in an attempt to clarify the above-mentioned inconsistencies. The suburothelial ICs of the bladder were evaluated by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Bladder samples from 6 Wistar rats were used for IHC and TEM studies and human bladder autopsy samples were used for IHC. Desmin labeled only the detrusor muscle, while all the myoid structures of the bladder wall were positive for α-smooth muscle actin (SMA). A distinctive α-SMA-positive suburothelial layer was identified. A layered structure of the immediate suburothelial band was detected using TEM: (1) the inner suburothelial layer consisted of fibroblasts equipped for matrix synthesis; (2) the middle suburothelial layer consisted of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) and myoid ICCs, and (3) the outer suburothelial layer consisted of ICs with TC morphology, building a distinctive network. In conclusion, the suburothelial layer consists of distinctive types of ICs but not MFs. The myoid layer, with SMCs and ICCs, which could be considered identical to the α-SMA-positive cells in the suburothelial band, seems the best-equipped layer for pacemaking and signaling. Noteworthy, the network of ICs also seems suitable for stromal signaling.

OBJECTIVE: The objective is to compare, in a prospective randomized clinical trial, three types of attachment systems for mandibular implant overdenture, focusing on costs, maintenance requirements and complications from baseline to the end of 5-year follow-up period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-nine fully mandibular and fully/partially maxillary edentulous patients received two screw-type Straumann implants, in the mandibular canine region. New overdentures with three types of attachment systems were inserted according to an early-loading protocol: Group B (balls, divided into Subgroup B.1 - retentive anchor with gold matrix and Subgroup B.2 - retentive anchor with titanium matrix) (n = 23), Group M (magnets) (n = 23) and Group L (locator) (n = 23). RESULTS: The highest maintenance event number (195) was observed in Group B vs. 31 in Group L and 15 in Group M. Significantly more complications were recorded in Subgroup B.1 than in Subgroup B.2, Group M and Group L (P < 0.05). Group M registered the highest prosthetic success (82.6%) in the 5 years, followed by Group L (78.2%). Subgroup B.1 had the lowest success rate (50%). The magnet group recorded statistically significant higher costs, comparing with the other two groups (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The three attachment systems functioned well after 5 years. The magnets had a low maintenance requirement and high success rate, despite the relatively increased initial costs. Retentive anchor with titanium matrix and locator may be a better choice from a financial point of view, taking into consideration the initial low cost of the components and also the reduced number of complications.

OBJECTIVES: Oxidative stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of many systemic and oral diseases such as periodontal disease. The main aim of this study is to explore a possible association between salivary markers of OS and alveolar bone loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 20 patients with chronic periodontitis and 20 controls. Salivary OS biomarkers 8-hidroxy-desoxguanosine (8-HOdG), malondialdehyde (MDA), uric acid, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were evaluated. Bone loss markers such as C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX I), matrix metalloproteinases-8 (MMP-8), osteocalcin and 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 (25- OH D) were detected in this study. The methods included general biochemical tests and ELISA. RESULTS: Salivary 8-OHdG, MDA levels were significantly higher in the chronic periodontitis group compared with controls (p < 0.05). Salivary activities for uric acid, TAC and GPx were significantly decreased in patients with chronic periodontitis vs controls (p < 0.05). Salivary levels for CTX I, MMP-8, 25-OH D and Osteocalcin were significantly higher in the chronic periodontitis group compared to the controls (p < 0.05). A significant positive correlation was observed between salivary levels of MDA and CTX I. Significant negative correlations between uric acid and CTX I and between MMP-8 and uric acid have been found. Significant positive correlations were observed between CTX I, MMP-8, 25-OH D, osteocalcin and clinical parameters of periodontal disease. CONCLUSIONS: Important oxidative stress associated with alveolar bone loss biomarkers can be detected in saliva of patients with periodontal disease.

BACKGROUND: When the natural process of bone remodeling is disturbed, the need arises for a stimulant material in order to enhance the formation of a new healthy and strong osseous tissue to replace the damaged one. Recent studies have reported synthetic biomaterials to be a very good option for supporting bone regeneration. STUDY DESIGN: Narrative review. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to provide a brief presentation of two of the most recently developed synthetic biomaterials, i.e. calcium phosphate cements and synthetic composites, that are currently being used in bone regeneration with promising results. METHODS: Literature searches using broad terms such as "bone regeneration," "biomaterials," "synthetic composites" and "calcium phosphate cements" were performed using PubMed. The osteal cells state of the art was explored by searching topic-specific full text keywords using Google Scholar. CONCLUSIONS: Synthetic polymers such as PCL (poly-ε-caprolactone) and PLGA (poly lactic-co-glycolic acid) can improve the effectiveness of biomaterials like HA (hydroxyapatite) and BG (bioglass). Calcium phosphate, although being a suitable material for stimulating bone regeneration, needs an adjuvant in order to be effective in larger bone defects.

INTRODUCTION: This systematic review aimed to compare reciprocating with continuous rotary instrumentation kinematics, by means of microcomputed tomography evaluations, in extracted human permanent teeth with moderate and severe canal curvatures. METHODS: The research protocol was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews and given the reference number CRD42023404035. An electronic search was undertaken in MEDLINE (PubMed), EBSCO, Scopus, Web of Science databases until December 2021. Manual screening of issues in endodontic journals and references of relevant articles were assessed individually. The risk of bias (RoB) of the included articles was evaluated with the QUIN tool (Quality Assessment Tool for In Vitro Studies). RESULTS: Among 1640 retrieved articles, 49 were included in the qualitative synthesis. Fifteen articles had low RoB, 33 articles had medium RoB, and only 1 study was at high RoB. Continuous rotary systems had better centering ability in both moderate and severe canal curvatures and resulted in less apical transportation in severely curved root canals. None of the kinematic systems was capable of instrumenting the entire canal surface area. Reciprocating kinematics systems tended to provide higher increase in surface area of severely curved canals and produced fewer dentinal microcracks in moderately curved canals. CONCLUSIONS: The evidence presented in this review suggests that continuous rotary system seems to be better than reciprocating system in solving the major issues encountered during root canal instrumentation of extracted teeth with moderate and severe curvatures.

The anatomy of the pterygopalatine fossa keeps a traditional level and is viewed as constant, even though a series of structures neighboring the fossa are known to present individual variations. We aimed to evaluate on 3D volume renderizations the anatomical variables of the pterygopalatine fossa, as related to the variable pneumatization patterns of the bones surrounding the fossa. The study was performed retrospectively on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 100 patients. The pterygopalatine fossa was divided into an upper (orbital) and a lower (pterygomaxillary) floor; the medial compartment of the orbital floor lodges the pterygopalatine ganglion. The pneumatization patterns of the pterygopalatine fossa orbital floor walls were variable: (a) the posterior wall pneumatization pattern was determined in 89.5 % by recesses of the sphenoidal sinus related to the maxillary nerve and pterygoid canals; (b) the upper continuation of the pterygopalatine fossa with the orbital apex was narrowed in 79.5 % by ethmoid air cells and/or a maxillary recess of the sphenoidal sinus; (c) according to its pneumatization pattern, the anterior wall of the pterygopalatine fossa was a maxillary (40.5 %), maxillo-ethmoidal (46.5 %), or maxillo-sphenoidal (13 %) wall. The logistic regression models showed that the maxillo-ethmoidal type of pterygopalatine fossa anterior wall was significantly associated with a sphenoidal sinus only expanded above the pterygoid canal and a spheno-ethmoidal upper wall. The pterygopalatine fossa viewed as an intersinus space is related to variable pneumatization patterns which can be accurately identified by CBCT and 3DVR studies, for anatomic and preoperatory purposes.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the length and three-dimensional orientation and to detail the morphological variations of the styloid process. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-four patients undergoing temporal bone evaluation for different reasons were randomly selected and included in the present study. The length, angulation in the coronal and sagittal planes, as well as morphological variations of the styloid processes were assessed using conebeam computer tomography. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to test possible associations between the length of styloid process and angulations, as well as between angulations. Student's t-test was used to compare the differences between the sample mean length and angulations in normal and elongated styloid process groups. RESULTS: The sagittal angle showed weak positive correlations with the styloid process length and the transverse angle (r = 0.24, p = 0.02, n = 88). A medium positive correlation was found between the sagittal and transverse angulations in the elongated styloid process group (r = 0.49, p = 0.0015, n = 38). There was a statistical significant difference between the mean sagittal angulation in elongated styloid and normal styloid process groups (p = 0.015). The styloid process morphology also varied in terms of shape, number, and degree of ossification. CONCLUSIONS: The morphometric and morphologic variations of the styloid process may be important factors to be taken into account not only from the viewpoint of styloid syndromes, but also in preoperatory planning and during surgery.

Oral health professionals' knowledge of sustainability is essential for promoting environmental protection in dental healthcare. This pilot study involved an online survey addressed to 70 dental private practitioners from Bucharest, Romania, to evaluate their awareness of the concept of sustainability in dentistry. The performed statistical analysis revealed that 41.4% of the participants were well aware of sustainability in dentistry, with older participants demonstrating significantly higher levels of such awareness (p = 0.001). Sustainability awareness among participants correlates positively with their knowledge of the negative environmental impacts of dental activity (p < 0.001) and with the concern for sustainable dentistry implementation in their workplace (p = 0.037). Improper biohazardous waste disposal was identified as the primary cause of negative environmental impact of dental practices by 87.1% of participants. Installing high energy-efficient dental equipment was selected as the most important action to implement sustainability in participants' dental practices (64.3%). Overall, 51.4% of the participants reported that the COVID-19 pandemic had a medium impact on their dental activity in terms of sustainability. Our study found that participants have a moderate level of awareness regarding sustainability in dentistry, highlighting the need for education on sustainability for oral health professionals.

Dental education was severely challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide. The evaluation of the viewpoint of the dental teachers of the Faculty of Dentistry at "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, Romania, on these exceptional circumstances' consequences was the objective of this paper. A cross-sectional study was conducted in April 2022, on the academic staff who reported their perceptions of the emotional and educational impact of the pandemic by completing a Google Forms questionnaire. Although a significant emotional impact of the pandemic was reported by over a third of the participants (31.2%), most of them being teachers of fifth-year dental students (p = 0.019), the perceived stress had an impact on the teaching performance in few of them (14%), the quality of sleep remaining unaffected in most of them (53.7%), whereas the level of anxiety was low (57%). An educational impact regarding the techno difficulties during the online transition was mentioned by few respondents (16.1%), with male teaching staff facing the fewest problems (p = 0.024), as well as low levels of difficulties in transmitting academic information (11.9), with men also being the most unaffected (p = 0.006). More than half of the participants (59.1%) rather see digital and/or virtual education during the pandemic as having adverse effects on the educational system, the most sceptical being teachers of the fifth (p = 0.001) and sixth years (p = 0.001). The COVID-19 pandemic affected the academic staff of the Faculty of Dentistry at "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, Romania, not only at a personal level but also at a professional, pedagogical one, due to the introduction of the online teaching system followed by the hybrid one. Age group, gender, and teaching year differentiated the degree of emotional and educational impairment.
