RESUMO

Sludge is a nutrient-rich organic waste generated from wastewater treatment plants. However, the application of sludge as a nutrient source is limited by its high contents of water and pollutants. In this study, the effects of biomass type on nutrient recovery and heavy metal removal from digested sludge by hydrothermal treatment (HTT) were investigated. Blending biomass with digested sludge for HTT at 180-240 °C increased the recovery of nitrogen in the treated solids. At the HTT temperature of 240 °C, HTT with hardwood sawdust led to the highest nitrogen recovery of 70.6%, compared to the lowest nitrogen recovery of 36.5% without biomass. Blending biomass slightly decreased the recovery of phosphorus compared to those without biomass. Nevertheless, the lowest phosphorus recovery of 91.3% with the use of hardwood sawdust at the HTT temperature of 240 °C was only ∼7.0% less than that without biomass. Blending biomass reduced the contents of macro-metals such as Ca, Fe, Mg and Al in treated solids but the metal contents varied with different biomasses. Regarding the heavy metals, the use of rice husk did not decrease the contents of Ni and Co while blending bagasse did not decrease the content of Cr at HTT temperatures of 210 °C and 240 °C compared to the use of other biomasses. The different effects of biomass type on nutrient recovery and heavy metals were likely related to the types and abundances of organic acids such as acetic acid, oxygen-containing functional groups such as C-OH and COOH, oxide minerals such as silica from biomasses and the overall effects of these factors. This study provides very useful information in selection of lignocellulosic biomass for HTT of sludge for nutrient recovery and heavy metal removal.

Recently, methods for creating three-dimensional (3-D) human skeletal muscle tissues from myogenic cell lines have been reported. Bioengineered muscle tissues are contractile and respond to electrical and chemical stimulation. In this study, we provide an electrophysiological analysis of healthy and dystrophic 3-D bioengineered skeletal muscle tissues, focusing on Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). We enlist the 3-D in vitro model of DMD muscle tissue to evaluate muscle cell electrical properties uncoupled from presynaptic neural inputs, an understudied aspect of DMD. Our data show that previously reported electrophysiological aspects of DMD, including effects on membrane potential and membrane resistance, are replicated in the 3-D muscle tissue model. Furthermore, we test a potential therapeutic compound, poloxamer 188, and demonstrate capacity for improving the membrane potential in DMD muscle. Therefore, this study serves as a baseline for a new in vitro method to examine potential therapies for muscular disorders.

Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans ILS-2 was adapted in digested sludge and used to treat sludge for dewaterability improvement. Results showed that increasing ferrous iron loading increased sludge dewaterability, but the inoculation of the bioleaching strain had little effect on sludge dewaterability compared to controls without the strain. The total extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) contents of sludges with and without bioleaching treatment were similar except for bioleaching treatment at 10% ferrous iron loading (on sludge total solids) where total EPS was higher with bioleaching treatment. However, bioleaching treatment for 48 h had a notable effect on removal of heavy metals, such as Mn, Ni and Zn, especially at the high loadings of ferrous iron. In the presence of A. ferrooxidans, the removal of Ni, Mn and Zn reached 93%, 88% and 80%, respectively, at a ferrous iron loading of 21%. The sequencing of 16S rRNA genes indicated that increasing ferrous iron loadings to 15% and 21% increased the relative abundance of Acidithiobacillus, Acidocella (with A. ferrooxidans) and Carboxylicivirga (without A. ferrooxidans) but decreased the abundance of Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter after 48 h treatment. This study enhanced the understanding of the correlations between bioleaching treatment of digested sludge, sludge dewaterability, heavy metal removal and bacterial communities.

RESUMO

Skeletal muscle tissue engineering (SMTE) aims at repairing defective skeletal muscles. Until now, numerous developments are made in SMTE; however, it is still challenging to recapitulate the complexity of muscles with current methods of fabrication. Here, after a brief description of the anatomy of skeletal muscle and a short state-of-the-art on developments made in SMTE with "conventional methods," the use of 3D bioprinting as a new tool for SMTE is in focus. The current bioprinting methods are discussed, and an overview of the bioink formulations and properties used in 3D bioprinting is provided. Finally, different advances made in SMTE by 3D bioprinting are highlighted, and future needs and a short perspective are provided.

Lichen planus is a chronic recurrent inflammatory disease affecting both skin and mucosa, mainly in oral and/or genital regions. Keratinocytes go through a well-regulated process of proliferation and differentiation, alterations in which may result in defects in the protective epithelial barrier. Long-term barrier impairment might lead to chronic inflammation. In order to broaden our understanding of the differentiation process in mucosal lichen planus, we mapped the expression of 4 factors known to be involved in differentiation. Biopsies were collected from oral and genital lichen planus lesions and normal controls. Altered expression of all 4 factors in epithelium from lichen planus lesions was found, clearly indicating disturbed epithelial differentiation in lichen planus lesions.

Fatty acid binding protein 7 (FABP7) expressed by astrocytes in developing and mature brains is involved in uptake and transportation of fatty acids, signal transduction, and gene transcription. Fabp7 knockout (Fabp7 KO) mice show behavioral phenotypes reminiscent of human neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. However, direct evidence showing how FABP7 deficiency in astrocytes leads to altered brain function is lacking. Here, we examined neuronal dendritic morphology and synaptic plasticity in medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) of Fabp7 KO mice and in primary cortical neuronal cultures. Golgi staining of cortical pyramidal neurons in Fabp7 KO mice revealed aberrant dendritic morphology and decreased spine density compared with those in wild-type (WT) mice. Aberrant dendritic morphology was also observed in primary cortical neurons co-cultured with FABP7-deficient astrocytes and neurons cultured in Fabp7 KO astrocyte-conditioned medium. Excitatory synapse number was decreased in mPFC of Fabp7 KO mice and in neurons co-cultured with Fabp7 KO astrocytes. Accordingly, whole-cell voltage-clamp recording in brain slices from pyramidal cells in the mPFC showed that both amplitude and frequency of action potential-independent miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs) were decreased in Fabp7 KO mice. Moreover, transplantation of WT astrocytes into the mPFC of Fabp7 KO mice partially attenuated behavioral impairments. Collectively, these results suggest that astrocytic FABP7 is important for dendritic arbor growth, neuronal excitatory synapse formation, and synaptic transmission, and provide new insights linking FABP7, lipid homeostasis, and neuropsychiatric disorders, leading to novel therapeutic interventions.

INTRODUCTION: Trauma is one of the causes of peripheral nerve injuries. Free radicals increase after tissue damage. Free radicals are usually scavenged and detoxified by antioxidants. In this study, we assessed the antioxidative role of the NGAL molecule in sciatic nerve repair in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sciatic nerves of 40 rats were crushed and the total mRNA of samples from day 1 and 3 and week 1, 3, 5 post injury was extracted. The expression of the NGAL gene was confirmed by RT-PCR. For immunohistochemistry analysis, the samples were fixed in paraformaldehyde and cut in 20 micrometer slices by cryostat. RESULTS: The expression of NGAL significantly upregulated in day 1, 3 and week 1 following the crushing of sciatic nerves in comparison with the intact nerves. Immunohistochemistry results also confirmed the protein expression of this gene. DISCUSSION: The NGAL molecule showed upregulation in the degeneration process after nerve injury, so it may play an important role in nerve repair.

Fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs) bind and solubilize long-chain fatty acids, controlling intracellular lipid dynamics. FABP7 is expressed by astrocytes in the developing brain, and suggested to be involved in the control of astrocyte lipid homeostasis. In this study, we sought to examine the role of FABP7 in astrocytes, focusing on plasma membrane lipid raft function, which is important for receptor-mediated signal transduction in response to extracellular stimuli. In FABP7-knockout (KO) astrocytes, the ligand-dependent accumulation of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and glial cell-line-derived neurotrophic factor receptor alpha 1 into lipid raft was decreased, and the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases and nuclear factor-κB was impaired after lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation when compared with wild-type astrocytes. In addition, the expression of caveolin-1, not cavin-1, 2, 3, caveolin-2, and flotillin-1, was found to be decreased at the protein and transcriptional levels. FABP7 re-expression in FABP7-KO astrocytes rescued the decreased level of caveolin-1. Furthermore, caveolin-1-transfection into FABP7-KO astrocytes significantly increased TLR4 recruitment into lipid raft and tumor necrosis factor-α production after LPS stimulation. Taken together, these data suggest that FABP7 controls lipid raft function through the regulation of caveolin-1 expression and is involved in the response of astrocytes to the external stimuli. Kupffer cells (KCs) are involved in the progression of liver diseases such as hepatitis and liver cancer. Several members of the fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) are expressed by tissue macrophages, and FABP7 is localized only in KCs. To clarify the role of FABP7 in the regulation of KC function, we evaluated pathological changes of Fabp7 knockout mice during carbon tetrachloride-induced liver injury. During liver injury in Fabp7 knockout mice, serum liver enzymes were increased, cytokine expression (tumor necrosis factor-α, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, and transforming growth factor-ß) was decreased in the liver, and the number of KCs in the liver necrotic area was significantly decreased. Interestingly, in the FABP7-deficient KCs, phagocytosis of apoptotic cells was impaired, and expression of the scavenger receptor CD36 was markedly decreased. In chronic liver injury, Fabp7 knockout mice showed less fibrogenic response to carbon tetrachloride compared with wild-type mice. Taken together, FABP7 is involved in the liver injury process through its regulation of KC phagocytic activity and cytokine production. Such modulation of KC function by FABP7 may provide a novel therapeutic approach to the treatment of liver diseases.

BACKGROUND: Low placental fatty acid (FA) transport during the embryonic period has been suggested to result in fetal developmental disorders and various adult metabolic diseases, but the molecular mechanism by which FAs are transported through the placental unit remains largely unknown. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the distribution and functional relevance of FA binding protein (FABP), a cellular chaperone of FAs, in the mouse placenta. METHODS: We clarified the localization of FABPs and sought to examine their function in placental FA transport through the phenotypic analysis of Fabp3-knockout mice. RESULTS: Four FABPs (FABP3, FABP4, FABP5, and FABP7) were expressed with spatial heterogeneity in the placenta, and FABP3 was dominantly localized to the trophoblast cells. In placentas from the Fabp3-knockout mice (both sexes), the transport coefficients for linoleic acid (LA) were significantly reduced compared with those from wild-type mice by 25% and 44% at embryonic day (E) 15.5 and E18.5, respectively, whereas those for α-linolenic acid (ALA) were reduced by 19% and 17%, respectively. The accumulation of LA (18% and 27% at E15.5 and E18.5) and ALA (16% at E15.5) was also significantly less in the Fabp3-knockout fetuses than in wild-type fetuses. In contrast, transport and accumulation of palmitic acid (PA) were unaffected and glucose uptake significantly increased by 23% in the gene-ablated mice compared with wild-type mice at E18.5. Incorporation of LA (51% and 52% at 1 and 60 min, respectively) and ALA (23% at 60 min), but not PA, was significantly less in FABP3-knockdown BeWo cells than in controls, whereas glucose uptake was significantly upregulated by 51%, 50%, 31%, and 33% at 1, 20, 40, and 60 min, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively FABP3 regulates n-3 (ω-3) and n-6 (ω-6) polyunsaturated FA transport in trophoblasts and plays a pivotal role in fetal development.

Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic mucocutaneous disease with unknown cause. Patients with LP often have both oral and genital lesions, but these conditions are often considered as separate diseases and treated accordingly. To find out which genes are differently expressed in mucosal LP compared to normal mucosa and establish whether oral and genital LP are in fact the same disease, whole genome expression analysis was performed on epithelium from 13 patients diagnosed with oral and/or genital LP and normal controls. For confirmation of keratin 4 and corneodesmosin expression, quantitative reverse-transcription PCR and immunohistochemistry were used. Many genes involved in epithelial development and differentiation are differently expressed in epithelium from LP compared to normal epithelium. Several of the differentially expressed genes are common for oral and genital LP and the same biological processes are altered which supports the fact that oral and genital LP are manifestations of the same disease. The change in gene expression indicates that differentiation is altered leading to changes in the epithelial barrier.

Fatty-acid-binding proteins (FABPs) are key intracellular molecules involved in the uptake, transportation and storage of fatty acids and in the mediation of signal transduction and gene transcription. However, little is known regarding their expression and function in the oligodendrocyte lineage. We evaluate the in vivo and in vitro expression of FABP5 and FABP7 in oligodendrocyte lineage cells in the cortex and corpus callosum of adult mice, mixed cortical culture and oligosphere culture by immunofluorescent counter-staining with major oligodendrocyte lineage markers. In all settings, FABP7 expression was detected in NG2(+)/PDGFRα(+) oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) that did not express FABP5. FABP5 was detected in mature CC1(+)/MBP(+) oligodendrocytes that did not express FABP7. Analysis of cultured OPCs showed a significant decrease in the population of FABP7-knockout (KO) OPCs and their BrdU uptake compared with wild-type (WT) OPCs. Upon incubation of OPCs in oligodendrocyte differentiation medium, a significantly lower percentage of FABP7-KO OPCs differentiated into O4(+) oligodendrocytes. The percentage of mature MBP(+) oligodendrocytes relative to whole O4(+)/MBP(+) oligodendrocytes was significantly lower in FABP7-KO and FABP5-KO than in WT cell populations. The percentage of terminally mature oligodendrocytes with membrane sheet morphology was significantly lower in FABP5-KO compared with WT cell populations. Thus, FABP7 and FABP5 are differentially expressed in oligodendrocyte lineage cells and regulate their proliferation and/or differentiation. Our findings suggest the involvement of FABP7 and FABP5 in the pathophysiology of demyelinating disorders, neuropsychiatric disorder and glioma, conditions in which OPCs/oligodendrocytes play central roles.

Digested sludge is a waste stream from anaerobic digestion (AD) in wastewater treatment plants. Hydrothermal treatment (HTT) of sludge mixed with lignocellulosic biomass is an attractive approach to improve sludge dewaterability and generate value-added products. However, process economics has not been well understood. In this study, firstly, the effect of biomass type on the energy properties of hydrochars was studied. Secondly, two scenarios were simulated to evaluate the effects of biomass type on the economics (processing 50,000 tonnes of sludge per year) of HTT of digested sludge for solid fuel and soil amendment applications. The two HTT scenarios included sludge alone and sludge-biomass mixtures (four cases for four biomass feedstocks) at 180 °C for 60 min. In both scenarios, HTT liquids were returned to existing AD facilities for biomethane production to offset the energy cost of the HTT process. The results showed that the higher heating value significantly increased from 16.0-17.0 MJ kg-1 in the sludge alone case to 18.0-23.0 MJ kg-1 in sludge-biomass mixtures (except for rice husk). With the use of saved transport cost as a revenue source, HTT of sludge-biomass led to a net present value (NPV) range of AU$ 9.9-20.3 million (20 years) and an internal rate of return (IRR) range of 25.0 %-45.2 % for solid fuel application of resulting hydrochar compared to an NPV of AU$ 18.4 million and an IRR of 55.0 % from HTT of sludge alone scenario. HTT of sludge-biomass led to a NPV range of AU$ 4.5-14.5 million and an IRR range of 17.2 %-35.7 % for soil amendment application while the hydrochar from HTT of sludge alone was not recommended for soil application due to the high contents of heavy metals. This study provides useful and critical information for process scale-up and commercialization for integration into wastewater treatment plants.

Thymic stromal cells, including cortical thymic epithelial cells (cTEC) produce many humoral factors, such as cytokines and eicosanoids to modulate thymocyte homeostasis, thereby regulating the peripheral immune responses. In this study, we identified fatty acid-binding protein (FABP4), an intracellular fatty acid chaperone, in the mouse thymus, and examined its role in the control of cytokine production in comparison with FABP5. By immunofluorescent staining, FABP4(+) cells enclosing the thymocytes were scattered throughout the thymic cortex with a spatial difference from the FABP5(+) cell that were distributed widely throughout the cTEC. The FABP4(+) cells were immunopositive for MHC class II, NLDC145 and cytokeratin 8, and were identified as part of cTEC. The FABP4(+) cells were identified as thymic nurse cells (TNC), a subpopulation of cTEC, by their active phagocytosis of apoptotic thymocytes. Furthermore, FABP4 expression was confirmed in the isolated TNC at the gene and protein levels. To explore the function of FABP in TNC, TSt-4/DLL1 cells stably expressing either FABP4 or FABP5 were established and the gene expressions of various cytokines were examined. The gene expression of interleukin (IL)-7 and IL-18 was increased both in FABP4 and FABP5 over-expressing cells compared with controls, and moreover, the increase in their expressions by adding of stearic acids was significantly enhanced in the FABP4 over-expressing cells. These data suggest that both FABPs are involved in the maintenance of T lymphocyte homeostasis through the modulation of cytokine production, which is possibly regulated by cellular fatty acid-mediated signaling in TEC, including TNC.

BACKGROUND: Mucosal lichen planus is a severe variant of lichen planus, Lichen planus (LP), which in many ways affect patients' lives. The aetiology is not fully understood, and there is no treatment clearing the disease once and for all. Oral LP has by the WHO been classified as a precancerous lesion. Micro-RNAs, miRNAs, are non-coding, small single-stranded RNAs involved in biological processes like apoptosis, proliferation, differentiation, metastasis, angiogenesis and immune response. METHODS AND RESULTS: In sera from 30 patients with multifocal mucosal LP, 15 miRNAs were identified as significantly differentially expressed compared with controls. The three most up-regulated miRNAs are all connected to oral squamous cell carcinoma or epithelial carcinoma in general. DISCUSSION: Even if no specific LP-associated miRNA profile was found, data clearly indicate that miRNAs could play a role in the earlier phases of lichen planus.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to emphasize the importance of seeing mucosal lichen planus (LP) as a systemic disease and not an isolated oral or genital disease and to analyze the proportion of thyroid antibodies among patients with multimucosal LP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients examined by the authors and diagnosed with mucosal LP within 1 year were consecutively included. Full medical histories were collected with special emphasis on autoimmune and thyroid diseases. Sera were analyzed for thyroid antibodies and underwent serologic test for herpes virus. The control group comprised 83 healthy volunteers matched regarding sex and age. RESULTS: Of the patients, 120 were included, 89 (74%) of whom were women and 31 (26%) were men. The vast majority of the patients had multifocal lesions, whereas oral lesions solely were found in 28% of women and 36% of men. Of the patients, 28% had at least 1 additional autoimmune disease. Approximately half of the women were treated with levothyroxine owing to thyroid disease. Antibodies against herpes simplex virus were found in 60% of the patients and 44% of the controls (p < .03). CONCLUSIONS: Lichen planus with mucosal involvement should be considered and taken care of as a systemic disease and not as an isolated oral and/or genital lichen. Contradictory to many former reports, most of our patients have a multimucosal disease that emphasizes the need for a multidisciplinary clinic to get optimal care and treatment.

In this study, lignocellulose-assisted hydrothermal treatment (HTT) of digestated sludge was studied to further understand the role of biomass in HTT and its effect on subsequent sludge dewatering. HTT of sludge-biomass mixtures at 180 °C for 60 min at a sludge/biomass total solids (TS) ratio of 1:1 led to solid residue moistures of 36%-40% after dewatering using a hydraulic press at 24 MPa, compared to 69.5% without biomass. Further investigation showed that organic acids, especially acetic acid generated from lignocellulosic biomass hydrolysed extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), especially EPS-protein, and improved sludge dewaterability. The role of organic acids was further verified with the addition of 10.0 g/L acetic acid for HTT of sludge at 180 °C in the absence of biomass. It was also observed that in HTT of sludge with 10.0 g/L acetic acid, protein nitrogen was converted to more stable forms of nitrogen such as pyrrole­nitrogen and quaternary­nitrogen. However, HTT with acetic acid alone resulted in dewatered solids with high ash contents, which may limit their applications as soil amendments. Combination of biomass and acetic acid with a sludge/biomass TS ratio of 3:1 and acetic acid loading of 10.0 g/L at a HTT temperature of 180 °C for 60 min led to solid moistures of 50.5% with hardwood sawdust and 57.7% with sugarcane bagasse after dewatering at 3 MPa, corresponding to total weight reductions of 66.3% and 55.7%, respectively. In contrast, HTT of sludge at 180 °C for 60 min without acetic acid and biomass resulted in a solid moisture of 76.6% after dewatering at 3 MPa and a corresponding weight reduction of 49.5%. With the use of biomass and acetic acid in HTT, the treated and dewatered solids also had increased carbon content and reduced ash content. These dewatered solids may be used as potential soil amendments though the properties related to soil applications need to be considered in future studies.

In this study, hydrochar samples derived from hydrothermal treatment (HTT) of sludge and sludge-biomass mixtures were applied to a sandy soil and their effects on soil properties, soil nutrients, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and soluble heavy metals were investigated. The application of untreated sludge and hydrochar derived from HTT of sludge at 180 °C led to the highest soluble nitrate, CO2 and N2O emissions, followed by the application of hydrochar samples derived from HTT of sludge-biomass mixtures at 180 °C. Although the application of hydrochar samples derived from HTT of sludge alone and sludge-biomass mixtures at 240 °C in sandy soil led to the lowest emissions of CO2 and N2O, it resulted in lower levels of soil electrical conductivity (EC), cation exchange capacity (CEC) and soluble phosphorus. The application of hydrochar samples derived from HTT at 240 °C led to the production of CH4 and lower nitrate-N contents than hydrochar samples derived from HTT at 180 °C. These results indicated that the soils containing hydrochar samples from HTT at 240 °C were anaerobic, which might inhibit the growth of plants. The application of hydrochar samples derived from HTT of sludge-biomass at 180 °C led to significantly improved contents of soil soluble phosphorus (2.56 and 2.84 g kg-1 soil) and soil nitrate-N (160.2 and 263.2 mg kg-1 soil) at the end of 60 days of incubation. However, these contents were lower than the contents of soluble phosphorus (3.71 and 4.45 g kg-1 soil) and nitrate-N (528.3 and 583.2 mg kg-1 soil) with the application of untreated sludge and sludge derived from HTT of sludge alone at 180 °C. Although more studies are needed to understand the mechanisms and effects on different soils, this study provides useful insights into the application of hydrochar derived from sludge-biomass mixture in soil.

CONTEXT: Sulfur mustard (SM) is known as an effective chemical agent and was used in the 1980s during the Iran-Iraq war against Iranians. At the present time, there are more than 40,000 people suffering from pulmonary lesions due to mustard gas in Iran. Though much is known about the gross pathology of SM damage, the molecular and cellular basis for this pathology is not well understood. OBJECTIVE: One of the most important protein groups involved in inflammatory responses is nuclear factor κB protein (NF-κB1) family. They belong to the category of DNA-binding protein factors necessary for transcription of many proinflammatory molecules. In our research, we examined the role of NF-κB1/RelA in the pathophysiology of the lung. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated 10 normal individuals and 20 SM induced patients. Expression of NF-κB1/RelA in controls and the SM exposed samples was measured by real-time polymerase chain reaction and localization of NF-κB1 protein was detected by immunohistochemistry staining. RESULTS: Our results revealed that expression levels of NF-κB1 and RelA were upregulated 0.64-6.50 fold and 0.83-8.34 fold, respectively, in the SM exposed patients in comparison with control samples. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: As far as we know, this is the first finding of induction of NF-κB in patients exposed to SM. NF-κB1/RelA may play a major role in inflammation induced by mustard gas or even in cell survival in the bronchial wall of affected patients.

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a relatively common chronic disease of the oral mucosa for which the aetiopathogenesis is not fully understood. It mainly affects middle aged and elderly. The finding of autoantibodies against p63, a member of the p53 family, is a strong indication of autoimmunity as a causative or contributing factor. The WHO classified OLP as a potentially malignant disorder, but still there is an ongoing debate in the literature on this subject. The TP53 gene encodes a tumour suppressor protein that is involved in induction of cell-cycle arrest or apoptosis of DNA-damaged cells. The p63 gene encodes six different proteins that are crucial for formation of the oral mucosa and skin. The coordinated stabilization of p53 and decreased expression of p63 seen in OLP cause induction of apoptosis enabling removal of DNA-damaged cells. In view of the complexity of cancerogenesis, no firm statement can at present be made about the relevance of the observed relationship between p53 and p63 and the possible malignant transformation of OLP.
