PURPOSE: Quantitative mapping of brain perfusion, diffusion, T2 *, and T1 has important applications in cerebrovascular diseases. At present, these sequences are performed separately. This study aims to develop a novel MRI technique to simultaneously estimate these parameters. METHODS: This sequence to measure perfusion, diffusion, T2 *, and T1 mapping with magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) was based on a previously reported MRF-arterial spin labeling (ASL) sequence, but the acquisition module was modified to include different TEs and presence/absence of bipolar diffusion-weighting gradients. We compared parameters derived from the proposed method to those derived from reference methods (i.e., separate sequences of MRF-ASL, conventional spin-echo DWI, and T2 * mapping). Test-retest repeatability and initial clinical application in two patients with stroke were evaluated. RESULTS: The scan time of our proposed method was 24% shorter than the sum of the reference methods. Parametric maps obtained from the proposed method revealed excellent image quality. Their quantitative values were strongly correlated with those from reference methods and were generally in agreement with values reported in the literature. Repeatability assessment revealed that ADC, T2 *, T1 , and B1 + estimation was highly reliable, with voxelwise coefficient of variation (CoV) <5%. The CoV for arterial transit time and cerebral blood flow was 16% ± 3% and 25% ± 9%, respectively. The results from the two patients with stroke demonstrated that parametric maps derived from the proposed method can detect both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. CONCLUSION: The proposed method is a promising technique for multi-parametric mapping and has potential use in patients with stroke.

PURPOSE: To create an inventory of image processing pipelines of arterial spin labeling (ASL) and list their main features, and to evaluate the capability, flexibility, and ease of use of publicly available pipelines to guide novice ASL users in selecting their optimal pipeline. METHODS: Developers self-assessed their pipelines using a questionnaire developed by the Task Force 1.1 of the ISMRM Open Science Initiative for Perfusion Imaging. Additionally, each publicly available pipeline was evaluated by two independent testers with basic ASL experience using a scoring system created for this purpose. RESULTS: The developers of 21 pipelines filled the questionnaire. Most pipelines are free for noncommercial use (n = 18) and work with the standard NIfTI (Neuroimaging Informatics Technology Initiative) data format (n = 15). All pipelines can process standard 3D single postlabeling delay pseudo-continuous ASL images and primarily differ in their support of advanced sequences and features. The publicly available pipelines (n = 9) were included in the independent testing, all of them being free for noncommercial use. The pipelines, in general, provided a trade-off between ease of use and flexibility for configuring advanced processing options. CONCLUSION: Although most ASL pipelines can process the common ASL data types, only some (namely, ASLPrep, ASLtbx, BASIL/Quantiphyse, ExploreASL, and MRICloud) are well-documented, publicly available, support multiple ASL types, have a user-friendly interface, and can provide a useful starting point for ASL processing. The choice of an optimal pipeline should be driven by specific data to be processed and user experience, and can be guided by the information provided in this ASL inventory.

RESUMO

This study aimed to systematically review the efficacy and safety of Bidouyan Oral Liquid in the treatment of rhinosinu-sitis(RS). CNKI, Wanfang, SinoMed, VIP, Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMbase, Web of Science, and Ovid were searched for the randomized controlled trial(RCT) of Bidouyan Oral Liquid for the treatment of RS patients. Moreover, the reference lists and the grey literature were searched manually. Two researchers independently screened the literature and extracted data. The Cochrane collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias(RoB 2.0) in randomized trial was used to assess the methodological quality of the included stu-dies. Meta-analysis was performed in RevMan 5.3 and Stata 12.0, and the grades of recommendation, assessment, development and evaluation(GRADE) was employed to evaluate the quality of evidence. A total of 54 RCTs(35 with drug combinations and 19 with single drugs) comprising 7 511 patients(3 973 in the observation group and 3 538 in the control group) were included. Meta-analysis showed that Bidouyan Oral Liquid + conventional treatment was superior to conventional treatment alone in increasing the total response rate(RR=1.19, 95%CI[1.15, 1.24], P<0.000 01) and decreasing the Lund-Kennedy scores(MD=-1.94, 95%CI[-2.61,-1.26], P<0.000 01), Lund-Mackay scores(MD=-2.14, 95%CI[-2.98,-1.31], P<0.000 01), and visual analogue scale(VAS) scores(MD_(total VAS scores)=-1.28, 95%CI[-1.56,-1.01], P<0.000 01; MD_(nasal congestion VAS scores)=-0.58, 95%CI[-0.89,-0.27], P=0.000 2; MD_(runny nose VAS scores)=-0.61, 95%CI[-0.93,-0.29], P=0.000 2; MD_(olfactory dysfunction VAS scores)=-0.43, 95%CI[-0.52,-0.34], P<0.000 01; MD_(head and facial pain VAS scores)=-0.41, 95%CI[-0.57,-0.26], P<0.000 01). Furthermore, the combined treatment outperformed conventional treatment alone in improving the mucociliary transport rate(MTR)(MD=1.64, 95%CI[1.08, 2.20], P<0.000 01) and lowering the levels of inflammatory cytokines{tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)(SMD=-1.95, 95%CI[-2.57,-1.33], P<0.000 01), interleukin-6(IL-6)(SMD=-2.64, 95%CI[-4.08,-1.21], P=0.000 3)} in RS patients. In addition, the combined treatment did not increase the incidence of adverse reactions(RR=0.83, 95%CI[0.44, 1.57], P=0.57). Bidouyan Oral Liquid was superior to conventional treatment in increasing total response rate(RR=1.25, 95%CI[1.18, 1.32], P<0.000 01), decreasing the Lund-Kennedy(P<0.01) and Lund-Mackay scores(P<0.05), alleviating major symptoms(P_(total VAS scores)<0.01; P_(nasal congestion VAS scores)<0.01; P_(runny nose VAS scores)<0.01; P_(olfactory dysfunction VAS scores)<0.05; P_(head and facial pain VAS scores)<0.01), and decreasing adverse reactions(P=0.03). The results showed that either Bidouyan Oral Liquid or Bidouyan Oral Liquid + conventional treatment can increase the total response rate, decrease the Lund-Kennedy and Lund-Mackay scores, and mitigate major symptoms. In addition, Bidouyan Oral Liquid + conventional treatment improved MTR and reduced the expression of TNF-α and IL-6 without causing serious adverse events. However, due to the limited methodological quality of the included studies, large-sample and high-quality RCTs are needed to provide evidence support.

Technological innovation, cost effectiveness, and miniaturization are key factors that determine the commercial adaptability and sustainability of sensing platforms. Nanoplasmonic biosensors based on nanocup or nanohole arrays are attractive for the development of various miniaturized devices for clinical diagnostics, health management, and environmental monitoring. In this review, we discuss the latest trends in the engineering and development of nanoplasmonic sensors as biodiagnostic tools for the highly sensitive detection of chemical and biological analytes. We focused on studies that have explored flexible nanosurface plasmon resonance systems using a sample and scalable detection approach in an effort to highlight multiplexed measurements and portable point-of-care applications.

BACKGROUND: Perfusion and structural imaging play an important role in ischemic stroke. Magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF) arterial spin labeling (ASL) is a novel noninvasive method of ASL perfusion that allows simultaneous estimation of cerebral blood flow (CBF), bolus arrival time (BAT), and tissue T1 map in a single scan of <4 minutes. Here, we evaluated the utility of MRF-ASL in patients with ischemic stroke in terms of detecting hemodynamic and structural damage and predicting neurological deficits and disability. METHODS: A total of 34 patients were scanned on 3T magnetic resonance imaging. MRF-ASL, standard single-delay pseudo-continuous ASL, T2-weighted, and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging were performed. Regions of interest of lesion and contralateral normal tissues were manually delineated. CBF (with 2 different compartmental models), BAT, and tissue T1 parameters were quantified. Cross-sectional linear regression analyses were performed to examine the relationship between MRF-ASL parameters and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and modified Rankin Scale. Receiver operating characteristic analyses were performed to determine the utility of MRF-ASL in the classification of stroke lesion voxels. RESULTS: MRF-ASL derived parameters revealed a significant difference between stroke lesion and contralateral normal regions of interest, in that lesion regions manifested a lower CBF1-compartment (P<0.001), lower CBF2-compartment (P<0.001), longer BAT (P=0.002), and longer T1 (P<0.001) compared with normal regions of interest. NIHSS scores at acute stage revealed a strong association with lesion-normal differences in CBF1-compartment,diff (ß=-0.11, P=0.008), CBF2-compartment,diff (ß=-0.16, P=0.003), and T1,diff (ß=0.008, P=0.001). MRF-ASL parameters were also predictive of NIHSS score and modified Rankin Scale scale measured at a later stage, although the degree of the associations was weaker. These associations tended to be even stronger when the MRF-ASL data were acquired at the acute/subacute stage. Compared with standard pseudo-continuous ASL, the multiparametric capability of MRF-ASL yielded higher area under curve values in the receiver operating characteristic analyses of stroke voxel classifications. CONCLUSIONS: MRF-ASL may provide a new approach for quantitative hemodynamic and structural imaging in ischemic stroke.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to present a cloud-based spectral simulation tool "MRSCloud," which allows MRS users to simulate a vendor-specific and sequence-specific basis set online in a convenient and time-efficient manner. This tool can simulate basis sets for GE, Philips, and Siemens MR scanners, including conventional acquisitions and spectral editing schemes with PRESS and semi-LASER localization at 3 T. METHODS: The MRSCloud tool was built on the spectral simulation functionality in the FID-A software package. We added three extensions to accelerate computation (ie, one-dimensional projection method, coherence pathways filters, and precalculation of propagators). The RF waveforms were generated based on vendors' generic pulse shapes and timings. Simulations were compared within MRSCloud using different numbers of spatial resolution (21 × 21, 41 × 41, and 101 × 101). Simulated metabolite basis functions from MRSCloud were compared with those generated by the generic FID-A and MARSS, and a phantom-acquired basis set from LCModel. Intraclass correlation coefficients were calculated to measure the agreement between individual metabolite basis functions. Statistical analysis was performed using R in RStudio. RESULTS: Simulation time for a full PRESS basis set is approximately 11 min on the server. The interclass correlation coefficients ICCs were at least 0.98 between MRSCloud and FID-A and were at least 0.96 between MRSCloud and MARSS. The interclass correlation coefficients between simulated MRSCloud basis spectra and acquired LCModel basis spectra were lowest for glutamine at 0.68 and highest for N-acetylaspartate at 0.96. CONCLUSIONS: Substantial reductions in runtime have been achieved. High ICC values indicated that the accelerating features are running correctly and produce comparable and accurate basis sets.

BACKGROUND: Blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption may lead to endothelium dysfunction and inflammation in sickle cell disease (SCD). However, abnormalities of BBB in SCD, especially in pediatric patients for whom contrast agent administration less than optimal, have not been fully characterized. PURPOSE: To examine BBB permeability to water in a group of pediatric SCD participants using a non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging technique. We hypothesized that SCD participants will have increased BBB permeability. STUDY TYPE: Prospective cross-sectional. POPULATION: Twenty-six pediatric participants (10 ± 1 years, 15F/11M) were enrolled, including 21 SCD participants and 5 sickle cell trait (SCT) participants, who were siblings of SCD patients. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3 T. Water extraction with phase-contrast arterial spin tagging with echo-planer imaging, phase-contrast and T1 -weighted magnetization-prepared rapid acquisition of gradient echo. ASSESSMENT: Water extraction fraction (E), BBB permeability-surface area product (PS), cerebral blood flow, hematological measures (hemoglobin, hematocrit, hemoglobin S), neuropsychological scores (including domains of intellectual ability, attention and executive function, academic achievement and adaptive function, and a composite score). Regions of interest were drawn by Z.L. (6 years of experience). STATISTICAL TESTS: Wilcoxon rank sum test and chi-square test for group comparison of demographics. Multiple linear regression analysis of PS with diagnostic category (SCD or SCT), hematological measures, and neuropsychological scores. A two-tailed P value of 0.05 or less was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Compared with SCT participants, SCD participants had a significantly higher BBB permeability to water (SCD: 207.0 ± 33.3 mL/100 g/minute, SCT: 171.2 ± 27.2 mL/100 g/minute). SCD participants with typically more severe phenotypes also had a significantly leakier BBB than those with typically milder phenotypes (severe: 217.3 ± 31.7 mL/100 g/minute, mild: 193.3 ± 31.8 mL/100 g/minute). Furthermore, more severe BBB disruption was associated with worse hematological symptoms, including lower hemoglobin concentrations (ß = -8.84, 95% confidence interval [CI] [-14.69, -3.00]), lower hematocrits (ß = -2.96, 95% CI [-4.84, -1.08]), and higher hemoglobin S fraction (ß = 0.77, 95% CI [0.014, 1.53]). DATA CONCLUSION: These findings support a potential role for BBB dysfunction in SCD pathogenesis of ischemic injury. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 2 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 2.

Anti-angiogenic gene therapy is a promising strategy in treating cancer. Endostatin and angiostatin are widely used in tumor anti-angiogenesis therapy. Our previous studies have shown that the BDS-hEA, a baculovirus long-term expressing the fusion protein of human endostatin and angiostatin, has a favorable effect in inhibiting the growth and angiogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma. The purpose of this study was to further investigate its synergistic antitumor efficiency in combination with low-dose chemotherapeutic gemcitabine (GEM) on the subcutaneous hepatocellular carcinoma xenograft model in nude mice. The results showed that the combined group significantly inhibited (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01 or p < 0.001) the growth of tumor weight and volume, reduced the expression of ki67 (cell proliferation marker), CD31 (angiogenic marker) and Matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9, tumor invasion and metastasis marker) and increased the apoptosis of tumor cells compared with the monotherapy and control groups, respectively. Synergistic index results showed that BDS-hEA combined with GEM had a synergistic effect in inhibiting tumor volume, proliferation, microvessel density, metastasis and promoting tumor apoptosis. Furthermore, there were no metastatic nodules and obvious pathological changes in liver tissue of the combined group, and the serum liver function indicators aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total bilirubin (T-BIL), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) were significantly reduced (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01 or p < 0.001) in the BDS-hEA or GEM groups compared with the control group. Notably, the combined therapy showed lower levels of liver function indicators than the GEM group. These data support the view that the combination of BDS-hEA and GEM has a synergistic anti-tumor properties and can reduce the damage of liver to certain extent.

RESUMO

This paper investigates the causal effect of informal care on the mental health of caregivers and disentangles the mechanisms of such effect. Using 2011-2018 CHARLS data, the fixed effects and instrumental variable approaches was conducted to address fundamental endogeneity problems. This study found that there was no impact of informal caregiving on caregivers' mental health in general. However, the intensity of caregiving was shown to negatively impair mental health. The impact of informal caregiving varied by kinship, cultural context, and residential area. Participation in social and exercise activities and life satisfaction mediated the association between the provision of informal care and caregivers' mental health. Long-term care insurance and the provision of formal care substantially modified the negative impacts of informal caregiving.

PURPOSE: We aim to leverage the power of deep-learning with high-fidelity training data to improve the reliability and processing speed of hemodynamic mapping with MR fingerprinting (MRF) arterial spin labeling (ASL). METHODS: A total of 15 healthy subjects were studied on a 3T MRI. Each subject underwent 10 runs of a multi-band multi-slice MRF-ASL sequence for a total scan time of approximately 40 min. MRF-ASL images were averaged across runs to yield a set of high-fidelity data. Training of a fully connected artificial neural network (ANN) was then performed using these data. The results from ANN were compared to those of dictionary matching (DM), ANN trained with single-run experimental data and with simulation data. Initial clinical performance of the technique was also demonstrated in a Moyamoya patient. RESULTS: The use of ANN reduced the processing time of MRF-ASL data to 3.6 s, compared to DM of 3 h 12 min. Parametric values obtained with ANN and DM were strongly correlated (R2 between 0.84 and 0.96). Results obtained from high-fidelity ANN were substantially more reliable compared to those from DM or single-run ANN. Voxel-wise coefficient of variation (CoV) of high-fidelity ANN, DM, and single-run ANN was 0.15 ± 0.08, 0.41 ± 0.20, 0.30 ± 0.16, respectively, for cerebral blood flow and 0.11 ± 0.06, 0.20 ± 0.19, 0.15 ± 0.10, respectively, for bolus arrival time. In vivo data trained ANN also outperformed ANN trained with simulation data. The superior performance afforded by ANN allowed more conspicuous depiction of hemodynamic abnormalities in Moyamoya patient. CONCLUSION: Deep-learning-based parametric reconstruction improves the reliability of MRF-ASL hemodynamic maps and reduces processing time.

PURPOSE: Benchmarking of flow and perfusion MR techniques on standardized phantoms can facilitate the use of advanced angiography and perfusion-mapping techniques across multiple sites, field strength, and vendors. Here, MRA and perfusion mapping by arterial spin labeling (ASL) using Fourier transform (FT)-based velocity-selective saturation and inversion pulse trains were evaluated on a commercial perfusion phantom. METHODS: The FT velocity-selective saturation-based MRA and FT velocity-selective inversion-based ASL perfusion imaging were compared with time-of-flight and pseudo-continuous ASL at 3 T on the perfusion phantom at two controlled flow rates, 175 mL/min and 350 mL/min. Velocity-selective MRA (VSMRA) and velocity-selective ASL (VSASL) were each performed with three velocity-encoding directions: foot-head, left-right, and oblique 45°. The contrast-to-noise ratio for MRA scans and perfusion-weighted signal, as well as labeling efficiency for ASL methods, were quantified. RESULTS: On this phantom with feeding tubes having only vertical and transverse flow directions, VSMRA and VSASL exhibited the dependence of velocity-encoding directions. The foot-head-encoded VSMRA and VSASL generated similar signal contrasts as time of flight and pseudo-continuous ASL for the two flow rates, respectively. The oblique 45°-encoded VSMRA yielded more uniform contrast-to-noise ratio across slices than foot-head and left-right-encoded VSMRA scans. The oblique 45°-encoded VSASL elevated labeling efficiency from 0.22-0.68 to 0.82-0.90 through more uniform labeling of the entire feeding tubes. CONCLUSION: Both FT velocity-selective saturation-based VSMRA and FT velocity-selective inversion-based VSASL were characterized on a commercial perfusion phantom. Careful selection of velocity-encoding directions along the major vessels is recommended for their applications in various organs.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the impact of public health insurance coverage, specifically the New Cooperative Medical Scheme (NCMS), on childhood nutrition in poor rural households in China, and to identify the mechanisms through which health insurance coverage affects nutritional intake. METHODS: Longitudinal data on 3291 children were taken from four time periods (2004, 2006, 2009, and 2011) from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS). Panel data analysis was performed with the fixed-effect model and the propensity score matching with difference-in-differences (PSM-DID) approach. RESULTS: The introduction of the NCMS was associated with a decline in calories, fat, and protein intake, and an increase in the intake of carbohydrates. The NCMS had the greatest negative effect on children aged 0 to 5 years, particularly girls. Out-of-pocket medical expenses were identified as the main channel through which the NCMS affected the nutritional intake of children. CONCLUSIONS: The study showed that the NCMS neither significantly improved the nutritional status of children nor enhanced intake of high-quality nutrients among rural poor households. These findings were attributed to the way in which health-seeking behavior was modified in the light of NCMS coverage. Specifically, NCMS coverage tended to increase healthcare utilization, which in turn increased out-of-pocket medical expenditures. This encouraged savings to aid financial risk protection and resulted in less disposable income for food consumption.

MR Fingerprinting (MRF)-based Arterial-Spin-Labeling (ASL) has the potential to measure multiple parameters such as cerebral blood flow (CBF), bolus arrival time (BAT), and tissue T1 in a single scan. However, the previous reports have only demonstrated a proof-of-principle of the technique but have not examined the performance of the sequence in the context of key imaging parameters. Furthermore, there has not been a study to directly compare the technique to clinically used perfusion method of dynamic-susceptibility-contrast (DSC) MRI. The present report consists of two studies. In the first study (N = 8), we examined the dependence of MRF-ASL sequence on TR time pattern. Ten different TR patterns with a range of temporal characteristics were examined by both simulations and experiments. The results revealed that there was a significance dependence of the sequence performance on TR pattern (p < 0.001), although there was not a single pattern that provided dramatically improvements. Among the TR patterns tested, a sinusoidal pattern with a period of 125 TRs provided an overall best estimation in terms of spatial consistency. These experimental observations were consistent with those of numerical simulations. In the second study (N = 8), we compared MRF-ASL results with those of DSC MRI. It was found that MRF-ASL and DSC MRI provided highly comparable maps of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and bolus-arrival-time (BAT), with spatial correlation coefficients of 0.79 and 0.91, respectively. However, in terms of quantitative values, BAT obtained with MRF-ASL was considerably lower than that from DSC (p < 0.001), presumably because of the differences in tracer characteristics in terms of diffusible versus intravascular tracers. Test-retest assessment of MRF-ASL MRI revealed that the spatial correlations of parametric maps were 0.997, 0.962, 0.746 and 0.863 for B1+ , T1 , CBF, and BAT, respectively. MRF-ASL is a promising technique for assessing multiple perfusion parameters simultaneously without contrast agent.

Using accumulators for intercropping in agricultural production can change the heavy metal concentration in the target plants. This study aims to investigate how intercropping wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and Solanum nigrum L. affects soil bacterial community and cadmium (Cd) absorption in response to Cd-contaminated soil. We compared the concentrations and accumulations of Cd by plants, the activities of soil enzymes and the bacterial community structures of rhizosphere soil in monoculture and intercropping system. Principal component analysis (PCA) ordinations showed that soil bacterial communities were significantly separated by MW and IW, which illustrated intercropping with Solanum nigrum L. impacted the bacterial community structure of wheat. Firstly, the results showed that the biomass of shoots and roots in intercropped wheat (IW) were significantly decreased by 16.19% and 29.38% compared with monoculture wheat (MW) after 60 days after transplanting (DAT). Secondly, the Cd concentration and accumulation of shoots in IW was higher than MW. The Cd accumulation of IW shoots and roots were increased 12.87% and 0.98%, respectively after 60 days DAT. Besides, the enzymes activity [catalase (CAT), urease (UA) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP)] of IW were decreased 35%, 6% and 21%, respectively after 60 days DAT. Finally, the diversity indexes [Abundance-based Coverage Estimator (ACE), Chao and InvSimpson] of IW were lower than MW. These results indicated that intercropping with Solanum nigrum L. inhibited the wheat growth and decreased the bacterial community diversity in wheat rhizosphere, increased the Cd concentration and accumulation in plant tissues of wheat. Therefore, intercropping Solanum nigrum L. and wheat with Cd-contaminated soil might increase the risk of excessive Cd in wheat.

Arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI is increasingly used in research and clinical settings. The purpose of this work is to develop a cloud-based tool for ASL data processing, referred to as ASL-MRICloud, which may be useful to the MRI community. In contrast to existing ASL toolboxes, which are based on software installation on the user's local computer, ASL-MRICloud uses a web browser for data upload and results download, and the computation is performed on the remote server. As such, this tool is independent of the user's operating system, software version, and CPU speed. The ASL-MRICloud tool was implemented to be compatible with data acquired by scanners from all major MRI manufacturers, is capable of processing several common forms of ASL, including pseudo-continuous ASL and pulsed ASL, and can process single-delay and multi-delay ASL data. The outputs of ASL-MRICloud include absolute and relative values of cerebral blood flow, arterial transit time, voxel-wise masks indicating regions with potential hyper-perfusion and hypo-perfusion, and an image quality index. The ASL tool is also integrated with a T1 -based brain segmentation and normalization tool in MRICloud to allow generation of parametric maps in standard brain space as well as region-of-interest values. The tool was tested on a large data set containing 309 ASL scans as well as on publicly available ASL data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a persistent inflammation of the sinuses. As a result of long-term discomfort, patients may experience symptoms of common mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. This may affect the quality of life and disease progression. However, there is still uncertainty about the extent of the problem. OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis aimed to determine the prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms in patients with CRS. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and CBM databases for relevant studies published before 15 July 2022 in patients with CRS with concomitant depression and anxiety symptoms. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Two authors independently performed screening and quality assessment using validated tools. Extraction of data using predefined standardised data collection spreadsheets. Heterogeneity and inconsistency were checked using the I² statistic. RESULTS: The meta-analysis included 32 articles involving 56 933 patients. The prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms was estimated at 24.7% (95% CI, 21.3% to 28. 1%) and 29.7% (95% CI, 19.3% to 40.2%). Subgroup analysis revealed the following: (1) CRS without nasal polyps (CRSsNP): 26.2% (95% CI, 21.9% to 30.5%), CRS with nasal polyps(CRSwNP): 20% (95% CI, 15.9% to 24%); (2) Female patients: 36. 1% (95% CI, 25.3% to 46.9%), male patients: 24.3% (95% CI, 12. 1% to 36.6%); and (3) The average age≤50 years patients: 29.8% (95% CI, 21.3% to 38.2%), the average age>50 years patients: 22. 1% (95% CI, 17.1% to 27%). CONCLUSION: A significant proportion of people with CRS have symptoms of depression and anxiety, and early screening for depression and anxiety in people with CRS is critical. And, more attention needs to be given to females and patients with CRSsNP during screening. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER: CRD42022345959).

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) represents a heterogeneous disorder primarily characterized by the persistent inflammation of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. The subtype known as chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) is distinguished by a significantly elevated recurrence rate and augmented challenges in the management of nasal polyps. The pathogenesis underlying this subtype remains incompletely understood. Macrophages play a crucial role in mediating the immune system's response to inflammatory stimuli. These cells exhibit remarkable plasticity and heterogeneity, differentiating into either the pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype or the anti-inflammatory and reparative M2 phenotype depending on the surrounding microenvironment. In CRSwNP, macrophages demonstrate reduced production of Interleukin 10 (IL-10), compromised phagocytic activity, and decreased autophagy. Dysregulation of pro-resolving mediators may occur during the inflammatory resolution process, which could potentially hinder the adequate functioning of anti-inflammatory macrophages in facilitating resolution. Collectively, these factors may contribute to the prolonged inflammation observed in CRSwNP. Additionally, macrophages may enhance fibrin cross-linking through the release of factor XIII-A (FAXIII), promoting fibrin deposition and plasma protein retention. Macrophages also modulate vascular permeability by releasing Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Moreover, they may disrupt the balance between Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs) and Tissue Inhibitors of Metalloproteinases (TIMPs), which favors extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation, edema formation, and pseudocyst development. Accumulating evidence suggests a close association between macrophage infiltration and CRSwNP; however, the precise mechanisms underlying this relationship warrant further investigation. In different subtypes of CRSwNP, different macrophage phenotypic aggregations trigger different types of inflammatory features. Increasing evidence suggests that macrophage infiltration is closely associated with CRSwNP, but the mechanism and the relationship between macrophage typing and CRSwNP endophenotyping remain to be further explored. This review discusses the role of different types of macrophages in the pathogenesis of different types of CRSwNP and their contribution to polyp formation, in the hope that a better understanding of the role of macrophages in specific CRSwNP will contribute to a precise and individualized understanding of the disease.

The utilization of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors for real-time label-free molecular interaction analysis is already being employed in the fields of in vitro diagnostics and biomedicine. However, the widespread application of SPR technology is hindered by its limited detection throughput and high cost. To address this issue, this study introduces a novel multifunctional MetaSPR high-throughput microplate biosensor featuring 3D nanocups array structure, aiming to achieve high-throughput screening with a reduced cost and enhanced speed. Different types of MetaSPR sensors and analytical detection methods have been developed for accurate antibody subtype identification, epitope binding, affinity determination, antibody collocation, and quantitative detection, greatly promoting the screening and analysis of early-stage antibody drugs. The MetaSPR platform combined with nano-enhanced particles amplifies the detection signal and improves the detection sensitivity, making it more convenient, sensitive, and efficient than traditional ELISA. The findings demonstrate that the MetaSPR biosensor is a new practical technology detection platform that can improve the efficiency of biomolecular interaction studies with unlimited potential for new drug development.

The accumulation of trace amounts of certain small molecules in food poses considerable human health challenges, including the potential for carcinogenesis and mutagenesis. Here, an ultrasensitive gold-platinum nanoflower-coupled metasurface plasmon resonance (MetaSPR) (APNMSPR) biosensor, based on a competitive immunoassay, was developed for the multiplexed and rapid quantitative analysis of trace small molecules in eggs, offering timely monitoring of food safety. This one-step biosensor can be integrated into either a newly designed detachable high-throughput MetaSPR chip-strip plate device or a standard 96-well plate for multiplexed small-molecule detection within a single egg. The limits of detection were 0.81, 1.12, and 1.74 ppt for florfenicol, fipronil, and enrofloxacin, respectively, demonstrating up to 1000-fold increased sensitivity and a 15-fold reduction in analysis time compared with those of traditional methods. The results obtained using the APNMSPR biosensor showed a strong correlation with those obtained using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The APNMSPR biosensor holds immense promise for the multiplexed, highly sensitive, and rapid quantitative analysis of small molecules for applications in food safety control, early diagnosis, and environmental monitoring.

China launched its long-term care insurance (LTCI) program for older adults in 2016. Although the scheme has shown some promising outcomes, little is known about whether it improves subjective well-being. This study explored this topic among older persons with a disability and identified the underlying mechanisms associated with the channel of this effect using data from a national survey. The LTCI program was shown to improve the subjective well-being among older persons with a disability and this effect increased over time. The LTCI program has great positive effect among women and those who lived alone compared to their counterparts. Mechanism analysis revealed that the main channel by which the LTCI program has positive effect occurred through the satisfaction of long-term care needs and improved self-reported health. This study suggests promising benefits of the LTCI program for older Chinese adults.
