RESUMO

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are highly dispersed, millisecond-duration radio bursts1-3. Recent observations of a Galactic FRB4-8 suggest that at least some FRBs originate from magnetars, but the origin of cosmological FRBs is still not settled. Here we report the detection of 1,863 bursts in 82 h over 54 days from the repeating source FRB 20201124A (ref. 9). These observations show irregular short-time variation of the Faraday rotation measure (RM), which scrutinizes the density-weighted line-of-sight magnetic field strength, of individual bursts during the first 36 days, followed by a constant RM. We detected circular polarization in more than half of the burst sample, including one burst reaching a high fractional circular polarization of 75%. Oscillations in fractional linear and circular polarizations, as well as polarization angle as a function of wavelength, were detected. All of these features provide evidence for a complicated, dynamically evolving, magnetized immediate environment within about an astronomical unit (AU; Earth-Sun distance) of the source. Our optical observations of its Milky-Way-sized, metal-rich host galaxy10-12 show a barred spiral, with the FRB source residing in a low-stellar-density interarm region at an intermediate galactocentric distance. This environment is inconsistent with a young magnetar engine formed during an extreme explosion of a massive star that resulted in a long gamma-ray burst or superluminous supernova.

RESUMO

We present a spectral-scanning frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) 3D imaging system capable of producing high-resolution depth maps with an extended field of view (FOV). By employing a multipass configuration with an echelle grating, the system achieves an FOV of 5.5° along the grating axis. The resulting depth maps have a resolution of 70 × 40 pixels, with a depth resolution of 5.1 mm. The system employs an echelle grating for beam steering and leverages the multipass configuration for angular FOV magnification. Quantitative depth measurements and 3D imaging results of a static 3D-printed depth variation target are demonstrated. The proposed approach offers a promising solution for enhancing the FOV of spectral-scanning FMCW LiDAR systems within a limited wavelength-swept range, thereby reducing system complexity and cost, paving the way for improved 3D imaging applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of atrial fibrillation is important as it is crucial for improving patient outcomes. Fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF2) may serve as a diagnostic biomarker for heart failure due to its ability to promote cardiac fibrosis and hypertrophy; however, the relationship between FGF2 concentration and heart failure is unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to explore whether FGF2 could aid in distinguishing patients with heart failure from healthy controls and those with dyspnea without heart failure. Additionally, to evaluate the possible correlation between serum FGF2 levels and its diagnostic parameters in patients with heart failure. METHODS: Plasma FGF2 concentration was measured in 114 patients with a complaint of dyspnea (enrolled in the study between January 2022 and August 2022). Based on heart failure diagnosis, the patients were assigned to three groups, as follows: heart failure (n = 80), non-heart-failure dyspnea (n = 34), and healthy controls (n = 36), following physical examination. Possible correlations between serum FGF2 levels and other prognostic parameters in patients with heart failure were analyzed. RESULTS: Serum FGF2 levels were higher in patients with heart failure (125.60 [88.95, 183.40] pg/mL) than in those with non-heart-failure dyspnea (65.30 [28.85, 78.95] pg/mL) and healthy controls (78.90 [60.80, 87.20] pg/mL) (p < 0.001). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis identified FGF2 concentration as a significant predictor in heart failure diagnosis, with an area under the curve of 0.8693 (p < 0.0001). Importantly, in the heart failure group, serum FGF2 concentrations correlated with key prognostic parameters for heart failure, such as reduced left ventricular ejection fraction and elevated serum levels of N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide. CONCLUSIONS: Elevated serum FGF2 level is strongly associated with an increased risk of heart failure and could serve as a useful biomarker to complement vital diagnostic parameters for heart failure.

RESUMO

Silicon photonics devices benefit greatly from a partially etched platform and inverse design. Herein, we propose a bi-layer polarization splitter and rotator with a topology pattern and demonstrate it on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Our device exhibits a significantly reduced physical footprint of only 2µm×6µm, compared to traditional directional couplers and tapered waveguides. The device accomplishes the functions of polarization conversion and separation in such a compact design without redundant tapered or bending waveguides. The tested minimum insertion loss with the fabrication batch reaches 0.57 and 0.67 dB for TE and TM modes, respectively. The TE mode demonstrates a wider bandwidth and lower ILs than the TM modes, averaging around 1 dB from 1530 to 1565 nm. The M modes exhibit approximately 2 dB ILs at the same wavelength range, decreasing to about 1 dB between 1565 and 1580 nm. Improved designs and fabrication conditions strongly suggest the potential for further performance enhancement in the device. This successful initiative validates the exceptional performance resulting from the integration of the partially etched platform and inverse design, providing valuable insights for future photonic integrated device designs.

RESUMO

Objective: To establish a method for the determination of 2, 3-Butanedione (BUT) in the air of workplace, which including the process of collection by absorption in phosphoric acid aqueous solution and the process of analysis and detection by high performance liquid chromatography with derivatization. Methods: In October 2022, a porous glass plate absorption tube containing 10 ml of 0.01% phosphoric acid solution was used to collect BUT in the air of the workplace at a flow rate of 0.2 L/min. The absorption solution was derived by 2, 4-dinitrophenylhydrazine for 75 min and separated on a SB-C18 column (250 mm×4.6 mm, 5 µm) . At the column temperature of 30 ℃, the mixture of acetonitrile-water (V∶V, 1∶1) was eluted at the flow rate of 1.0 ml/min. It was detected by UV detector (λ=365 nm) , qualitatived by retention time and quantitatived by external standard. Results: It showed that BUT in phosphoric acid aqueous solution could be stored for at least 7 d at 4 ℃. There was a linear relationship within the determination range of 0.05-6.00 µg/ml, the linear regression equation was y=89.610x+0.133, r=0.9999. The sampling absorption efficiencies were 98.33%-100.00%, the detection limit of the method was 0.005 µg/ml, the minimum detection concentration was 0.016 mg/m(3) (based on V(0)=3.0 L) . The recovery rates were 95.96%-102.44%, the intra batch precision were 4.36%-7.78%, and the inter batch precision were 4.96%-6.06%. Conclusion: The method has the advantages of simple operation, high sensitivity and good accuracy. It can prevent the loss and degradation of BUT. It can be used for the determination of BUT in the air of workplace.

RESUMO

Spectrally selective narrowband photodetection is critical for near-infrared (NIR) imaging applications, such as for communicationand night-vision utilities. It is a long-standing challenge for detectors based on silicon, to achieve narrowband photodetection without integrating any optical filters. Here, this work demonstrates a NIR nanograting Si/organic (PBDBT-DTBT:BTP-4F) heterojunction photodetector (PD), which for the first time obtains the full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of only 26 nm and fast response of 74 µs at 895 nm. The response peak can be successfully tailored from 895 to 977 nm. The sharp and narrow response NIR peak is inherently attributed to the coherent overlapping between the NIR transmission spectrum of organic layer and diffraction enhanced absorption peak of patterned nanograting Si substrates. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) physics calculation confirms the resonant enhancement peaks, which is well consistent with the experiment results. Meanwhile, the relative characterization indicates that the introduction of the organic film can promote carrier transfer and charge collection, facilitating efficient photocurrent generation. This new device design strategy opens up a new window in developing low-cost sensitive NIR narrowband detection.

RESUMO

In this paper, we propose and evaluate two spatial division transmission (SDT) schemes, including spatial division diversity (SDD) and spatial division multiplexing (SDM), for underwater visible light communication (UVLC) systems. Moreover, three pairwise coding (PWC) schemes, including two one-dimensional PWC (1D-PWC) schemes, i.e., subcarrier PWC (SC-PWC) and spatial channel PWC (SCH-PWC), and one two-dimensional PWC (2D-PWC) scheme are further applied for signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) imbalance mitigation in the UVLC systems using SDD and SDM with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. The feasibility and superiority of applying SDD and SDM with various PWC schemes in a practical bandlimited two-channel OFDM-based UVLC system have been verified through both numerical simulations and hardware experiments. The obtained results show that the performance of SDD and SDM schemes are largely determined by both the overall SNR imbalance and the system spectral efficiency. Moreover, the experimental results demonstrate the robustness of SDM with 2D-PWC against bubble turbulence. Specifically, SDM with 2D-PWC can obtain bit error rates (BERs) under the 7% forward error correction (FEC) coding limit of 3.8 × 10-3 with a probability higher than 96% for a signal bandwidth of 70 MHz and a spectral efficiency of 8 bits/s/Hz, achieving an overall data rate of 560 Mbits/s.

RESUMO

We propose and demonstrate an efficient capacity enhancement scheme for bandlimited underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) systems by utilizing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with interleaved subcarrier number modulation (OFDM-ISNM). In the proposed OFDM-ISNM, joint number and constellation mapping/de-mapping is utilized to avoid error propagation and subblock interleaving is further applied to address the low-pass effect of the bandlimited UOWC system. The feasibility and superiority of the proposed OFDM-ISNM scheme for practical bandlimited UOWC systems have been verified through both simulations and experiments. The obtained results demonstrate that the proposed OFDM-ISNM scheme is capable of efficiently improving the achievable data rate of the bandlimited UOWC system. Specifically, the experimental results show a significant 28.6% capacity enhancement by OFDM-ISNM over other benchmark schemes, achieving a data rate of 3.6 Gbps through a 2-m water channel.

RESUMO

All polarization-maintaining (PM) linear cavity mode-locked fiber lasers are promising ultrafast laser sources due to their compactness and environmental robustness. Here, we demonstrate a linear cavity fiber laser with all-PM configuration experimentally and investigate the mode-locking formation of the laser using a machine-learning iterative optimization method based on the Gaussian process. The optimization algorithm can converge rapidly after only 30 runs. Using the optimized parameters, we simulate the generation of mode-locked pulses from noise. The output spectrum and pulse energy are highly consistent with the experiment. Furthermore, we describe the intracavity dynamic evolution under group velocity mismatch. We then show that the pulse trapping induced by cross-phase modulation leads to the overcompensated time synchronization between the orthogonally polarized components.

RESUMO

We experimentally demonstrate a hybrid mode division multiplexer (MDM) based on asymmetric directional couplers (ADCs) without transition tapers in between. The proposed MDM can couple five fundamental modes from access waveguides into the bus waveguide as the hybrid modes (TE0, TE1, TE2, TM0, and TM1). To eliminate the transition tapers between cascaded ADCs as well as to enable arbitrary add-drop to the bus waveguide, we maintain the bus waveguide width to be the same, while a partially etched subwavelength grating is introduced to reduce the effective refractive index of the bus waveguide. The experimental results demonstrate a working bandwidth of up to 140 nm.

RESUMO

The short-reach optical transmission systems based on intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) are gradually evolving into the networks with complex link topologies and connections, especially inside the data center. Multipath interference (MPI) introduces irregular fluctuations in the 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) signals and therefore affects the transmission performance. This Letter proposes an adaptive decision threshold (ADT) scheme to dynamically update the decision threshold, which can track the signal fluctuations in real time and mitigate the impact of MPI noise on the transmitted PAM4 signals. Numerical simulation results present that the proposed ADT scheme can significantly improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of the MPI-impaired PAM4 transmission system considering different MPI levels and laser linewidths. In a 50-Gbps PAM4 transmission system, the ADT can improve the MPI tolerance by more than beyond 6 dB when the BER reaches the KP4-forward error correction (FEC) criterion (2.4 × 10-4), presenting a better denoising performance than the existing MPI-mitigation algorithms A1 and A2. Moreover, the ADT scheme offers a lower computation complexity compared with A1 and A2, making it more practical for implementation.

RESUMO

We design, fabricate, and characterize a compact dual-mode waveguide crossing on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The dual-mode waveguide crossing with high performance is designed by utilizing the adjoint shape optimization. This adjoint-method-based optimization algorithm is computationally efficient and yields the optimal solution in fewer iterations compared with other iterative schemes. Our proposed dual-mode waveguide crossing exhibits low insertion loss and low crosstalk. Experimental results show that the insertion losses at the wavelength of 1550 nm are 0.83 dB and 0.50 dB for TE0 and TE1 modes, respectively. The crosstalk is less than -20 dB for the two modes over a wavelength range of 80 nm. The footprint of the whole structure is only 5 × 5 µm2.

RESUMO

Visible light communication (VLC) has emerged as a promising technology for future sixth-generation (6 G) communications. Estimating and predicting the impairments, such as turbulence and free space signal scattering, can help to construct flexible and adaptive VLC networks. However, the monitoring of impairments of VLC is still in its infancy. In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate a deep-neural-network-based signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) estimation scheme for VLC networks. A vision transformer (ViT) is first utilized and compared with the conventional scheme based on a convolutional neural network (CNN). Experimental results show that the ViT-based scheme exhibits robust performance in SNR estimation for VLC networks compared to the CNN-based scheme. Specifically, the ViT-based scheme can achieve accuracies of 76%, 63.33%, 45.33%, and 37.67% for 2-quadrature amplitude modulation (2QAM), 4QAM, 8QAM, and 16QAM, respectively, against 65%, 57.67%, 41.67%, and 34.33% for the CNN-based scheme. Additionally, data augmentation has been employed for achieving enhanced SNR estimation accuracies of 95%, 79.67%, 58.33%, and 50.33% for 2QAM, 4QAM, 8QAM, and 16QAM, respectively. The effect of the SNR step size of a contour stellar image dataset on the SNR estimation accuracy is also studied.

RESUMO

We have demonstrated a stable and low-noise all-polarization-maintaining (PM) ultrafast erbium-doped fiber laser mode-locked via nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) in a linear cavity with dual outputs. A detailed design strategy is presented. The all-PM configuration enhances the capability of resistance to environmental fluctuations. Self-starting mode-locking is realized by using a non-reciprocal phase shifter. The dual-output structure offers the intracavity filtering effect, where the reflective port serves as a bandpass spectral filter, significantly improving the transmissive-port optical properties. The laser directly generates ultrashort pulses with a pulse duration of 129 fs operating at a fundamental repetition rate of 105.8 MHz. The integrated root-mean-square (RMS) relative intensity noise from 10 Hz to 10 MHz is ∼0.008%, and the integrated RMS timing jitter from 5 kHz to 10 MHz is ∼36f s. Long-term stability is confirmed in 25 h with a RMS power fluctuation of  ∼0.10%. Our high-performance fiber laser is a prospective candidate for low-noise applications.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the safety and efficacy of haplo-identical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT) conditioning with the same dosage form of antithymoglobulin (ATG) in patients with severe aplastic anemia (SAA) failure to ATG. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study. A total of 65 patients with SAA who failed ATG treatment and received haplo-HSCT conditioning with the same dosage of ATG at the Institute of Hematology, Peking University People's Hospital between July 2008 and October 2020 were included as the ATG treatment failure group. An additional 65 SAA patients who applied ATG for the first time during haplo-HSCT were randomly selected by stratified sampling as the first-line haplo-HSCT group. Baseline clinical data and follow-up data of the two groups were collected. Conditioning-related toxicity within 10 days after ATG application and long-term prognosis were analyzed. The Kaplan-Meier was used to calculate the overall survival rate, and the Log-rank test was applied to compare the rates of the two groups. Results: In the ATG treatment failure group, there were 36 males and 29 females, and the age at the time of transplantation [M (Q1, Q3)] was 16 (8, 25) years. In the first-line haplo-HSCT group, there were 35 males and 30 females, with a median age of 17 (7, 26) years. Within 10 days of ATG application, the incidence of noninfectious fever, noninfectious diarrhea, and liver injury in the ATG treatment failure group was 78% (51 cases), 45% (29 cases), and 28% (18 cases), respectively, and in the first-line haplo-HSCT group was 74% (48 cases), 54% (35 cases), and 25% (16 cases), respectively; the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant for any of these three parameters (all P>0.05). For graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), there was no significant difference between the ATG treatment failure group and the first-line haplo-HSCT group in the development of 100 day Ⅱ to Ⅳ acute GVHD (29.51%±0.35% vs. 25.42%±0.33%), Ⅲ to Ⅳ acute GVHD (6.56%±0.10% vs. 6.78%±0.11%), and 3-year chronic GVHD (26.73%±0.36% vs. 21.15%±0.30%) (all P>0.05). Three-year overall survival (79.6%±5.1% vs. 84.6%±4.5%) and 3-year failure-free survival (79.6%±5.1% vs. 81.5%±4.8%) were also comparable between these two groups (both P>0.05). Conclusions: Compared with no exposure to ATG before HSCT, similar early adverse effects and comparable survival outcomes were achieved in patients with SAA who failed previous ATG treatment and received haplo-HSCT conditioning with the same dosage form of ATG. This might indicate that previous failure of ATG treatment does not significantly impact the efficacy and safety of salvaging haplo-HSCT in patients with SAA.

Patients in both groups received bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) mNGS and conventional microbiological tests (CMTs) while clinically diagnosed with pulmonary infection. The diagnostic positive rate, pathogen detection rate and clinical coincidence rate of the two methods were compared. At the same time, the difference of adjustment rate of anti-infective treatment strategy based on the results of mNGS detection was compared between the two groups. Results: The positive rates of mNGS in patients with pulmonary infection were 94.9% (74/78) and 82.0% (50/61) in the immunocompromised group and the non-immunocompromised group, respectively. The positive rates of CMTs in patients with pulmonary infection were 64.1% (50/78) and 75.4% (46/61) in the immunocompromised group and the non-immunocompromised group, respectively. The positive rates of mNGS and CMTs in patients with pulmonary infection in immunocompromised group showed a statistically significant difference (P<0.001). The detection rates of mNGS in the immunocompromised group for pneumocystis jirovecii and cytomegalovirus were 41.0% (32/78) and 37.2% (29/78), respectively, and the detection rates of Klebsiella pneumoniae, chlamydia psittaci and Legionella pneumophila were 16.4% (10/61), 9.8% (6/61) and 8.2% (5/61) in the non-immunocompromised patients, respectively, which were higher than those of CMTs [1.3% (1/78), 7.7% (6/78), 4.9% (3/61), 0 and 0] (all P<0.05). In the immunocompromised group, the clinical coincidence rates of mNGS and CMTs and were 89.7% (70/78) and 43.6% (34/78), respectively, with a statistically significant difference (P<0.001). In the non-immunocompromised group, the clinical coincidence rates of mNGS and CMTs were 83.6% (51/61) and 62.3% (38/61), with a statistically significant difference (P=0.008). In the immunocompromised group, according to the results of the etiology of mNGS, the adjustment rate of anti-infection treatment strategy was 87.2% (68/78), while in the non-immunocompromised group, the adjustment rate of anti-infective treatment strategy was 60.7% (37/61), with a statistically significant difference (P<0.001). Conclusion: In patients with immunocompromised pulmonary infection, mNGS has more advantages than CMTs in diagnostic positive rate, diagnosis rate of mixed infection, pathogen detection rate and guidance of anti-infection treatment strategy adjustment, which is worthy of clinical promotion and application.

RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRH-a) pretreatment before total hysterectomy for adenomyosis patients with uterine volume ≥12 gestational weeks and moderate or severe anemia. Methods: From January 2018 to March 2023, 689 patients who underwent total hysterectomy for adenomyosis in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University were retrospectively analyzed. According to the preoperative medication, they were divided into study group (127 cases) and control group (562 cases). Patients in the study group underwent GnRH-a pretreatment for 3 cycles before surgery, and the control group received operation directly. SPSS 26.0 software was used to perform 1∶1 matching for the two groups of patients through the propensity score matching method. Matching variables included age, body mass index, gravidity, parity, history of pelvic and abdominal surgery, menstrual cycle, menstrual period, dysmenorrhea score, initial diagnosis of cancer antigen 125 (CA125), uterine volume and hemoglobin value. The dysmenorrhea score, uterine volume, hemoglobin value and CA125 level before and after GnRH-a pretreatment in the study group were compared. And the duration of operation, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative white blood cell count, perioperative blood transfusion cases, postoperative disease rate, duration of hospitalization, total hospitalization cost between the two groups were compared. Results: With propensity score matching, 119 patients in the study group and 119 patients in the control group were finally enrolled in this study. In the study group, before and after the treatment with GnRH-a, the dysmenorrhea score (7.4±1.7 vs 5.6±1.8), uterine volume [(362±160) vs (233±126) cm3], hemoglobin value [(74.1±10.7) vs (102.5±13.5) g/L], and CA125 level [(104±76) vs (64±51) kU/L] were statistically different (all P<0.05). There were statistical differences of operation time [(86±18) vs (116±31) minutes], intraoperative blood loss [(24±9) vs (43±22) ml], white blood cell count after 1 day of operation [(9.80±0.10)×109/L vs (9.90±0.10)×109/L], number of perioperative blood transfusion case [5.9% (7/119) vs 61.3% (73/119)], postoperative disease rate [5.0% (6/119) vs 16.0% (19/119)], hospitalization duration [(7.1±1.6) vs (7.9±1.6) days], and total hospitalization cost [(35 323±5 275) vs (37 159±5 640) yuan] between the study group and the control group (all P<0.05).
