RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of evaluator fatigue and level of expertise on the grading of preclinical tooth crown preparations, by global and analytical methods of evaluation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study had a double-blind design. Two faculty members, each with more than 10 years of clinical and teaching experience, and two demonstrators with no teaching experience evaluated tooth preparations on maxillary central incisors and mandibular first molars. As a test of the effect of fatigue, preparations were globally (subjective grading) and analytically (criteria-based grading) graded on day 1 (after evaluators had been on duty continuously for 8 hours) and day 2 (in the morning after evaluators had sufficient sleep). Evaluators worked under the same circumstances and did not communicate with each other. The assigned textbooks were used to develop the criteria for grading (rubric) and the predefined exclusion criteria. Grades were recorded and statistically analyzed using statistical software. The paired-sample t-test and Mann-Whitney U test were used for multiple comparisons. Level of significance was set at p ˂ 0.05. RESULTS: An inconsistency in preclinical tooth preparation evaluation was found to exist by both global and analytical methods. Junior faculty tended to award higher grades than senior faculty did. Furthermore, higher grades were scored by the analytical method. More clinical and academic experience did not guarantee intra- and interexaminer reliability. Younger faculty appeared to tolerate fatigue better than older faculty. Likewise, global evaluation appeared to be more influenced by fatigue than was the analytical method. CONCLUSION: There were variations in grading, with no consistently preferred grading method. Evaluator performance after continuous 8-hour duty had no significant effect on preclinical tooth preparation evaluation. Level of expertise did not affect preclinical evaluation regardless of the grading method used.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of the study was to investigate the prevalence of overweight issues and obesity by recording the body mass index (BMI) and explore the dietary habits, physical activities (PAs), and lifestyles of male students at the College of Dentistry, King Saud University. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A custom-designed self-administrative form and questionnaire were used in this study for data collection. The first part of the form was used to record the participants' height and weight for the BMI. The participants were grouped as underweight (BMI < 18.5), normal weight (BMI = 18.5-24.9), overweight (BMI = 25-29.9), and obese (BMI > 30.0). The second part comprised questions related to the dietary habits, PAs, and lifestyles of the male dental students. Chi-squared test was used to generate the significance of each question at significance <0.05. RESULTS: A total of 211 male students (mean age 22.31 ± 2.10 years) participated in the study (response rate 78.1%). The findings revealed that 29 and 28% of the dental students were overweight and obese respectively. A statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) between the groups was found for the questions asked about time spent exercising per day (p = 0.003), time spent sporting per week (p = 0.003), and time spent watching television and internet surfing per day (p = 0.012). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of overweight issues and obesity is high among the dental students compared with the general population of Saudi Arabia, and there is a need for intervention programs to combat obesity among the dental students. The awareness about PA, healthy diet/lifestyle, consequences of overweight and obesity on their health and profession must be increased among the dental students to avoid future complications. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The impact of obesity on individuals' oral health and its influence on dental treatment protocols and postoperative procedures has been well documented. Dental students are more prone to obesity due to their lifestyle with less PA and disordered eating habits and, thereby, are prone to obesity-related health hazards.

Objective: We aimed to determine the effects of fetal hemoglobin induction therapy in restricting or even reversing the cephalometric changes associated with beta thalassemia. Materials and methods: In this comparative observational study, 90 participants were equally divided into three groups: a control group; patients with thalassemia major receiving blood transfusion (BT group); and patients receiving induction therapy (i.e., hydroxyl urea (5-10 mg/kg/day) or as much as 20 mg/kg/day) and thalidomide (2-10 mg/kg/day) along with blood transfusion (IT group). All patients underwent history taking and examination, photographic assessment, and radiographic evaluation with a lateral cephalogram. One-way ANOVA followed by post-hoc Tukey test was used to determine differences among groups. Results: The IT group differed significantly from the BT group in all photographic and skull table parameters, and most cephalometric parameters, such as facial angle (p ≤ 0.001), middle and lower facial heights (p ≤ 0.001), and inter-incisal angle (p = 0.036); the mean values in the IT group were similar to those in the control group. In-addition, dental and soft tissue measurements significantly differed among groups. For most parameters, the mean difference indicated higher values in the BT group. Conclusion: Induction therapy appeared to improve the facial angles, heights, and inter-incisal angles, whereas a class II skeletal pattern was observed in the transfusion only group. These findings suggest that fetal hemoglobin induction therapy might have restricted some of the cephalometric changes in patients with beta thalassemia.

Objectives: To investigate dental students' attitudes and perceptions about intraprofessional collaboration/education (IPC/IPE) and shared learning, and to explore the impact of IPC/IPE on the personal and professional development of participating students. Methods: A custom-designed questionnaire was used in this cross-sectional study. The questionnaire comprised 17 questions targeting to capture the student's perceptions about IPC/IPE using three factors: (1) dental students' preference/opinion about the IPC/IPE; (2) dental students' experience about the impact of IPC/IPE on learning outcomes and professional development; and (3) students' feedback about the significance of IPC/IPE in clinical/clinical simulation labs and workplace setting. The students rated each of the 17 statements on the 5-point Likert scale (range: 1 = strongly disagree to 5 = strongly agree). Results: A total of 259 responses were analysed (response rate = 65%). All students were aware of IPC/IPE in the field of dentistry (mean score = 4.22). The students preferred collaborative/shared learning with their own classmates. There was a consensus among students about the positive impact of IPC/IPE on enhanced learning, enhancement of communication skills, and enrichment of professional relationships with supporting staff as well as with the patients. There was also improved analytical and psychomotor skills, understanding of complex problems in the clinic, and understanding of strengths and limitations leading to self-improvement and increased efficiency and productivity. Conclusion: IPC/IPE had a compelling, powerful, and positive impact according to the experience of the participating dental students. It is recommended that a standardized curriculum be designed and guidelines set for IPC/IPE at dental institutions for effective interactions among students of all stages.

OBJECTIVES: Achieving a natural smile while restoring anterior teeth is challenging. Selecting appropriate dimensions of teeth is important for aesthetics. This study aims to measure and analyse the dimensions of the maxillary anterior teeth and their relative width proportions in a Saudi subpopulation. METHODS: One hundred and eighty patients (112 men and 68 women) with intact maxillary anterior teeth (age range = 20-30 years) participated in this research. Maxillary impressions (Vinyl Polysiloxane) were created and poured. A digital caliper was used to record the length and width of maxillary anterior teeth in millimetres (mm) from the dental casts, and the casts were digitally photographed to calculate relative width ratios. RESULTS: The mean width for central incisor was 8.74 mm (men = 8.89 mm, women = 8.60 mm), lateral incisor 6.64 mm (men = 6.79 mm, women = 6.49 mm) and canine 7.82 mm (men = 8.01 mm women = 7.63 mm). The recorded mean lengths for these teeth were 9.84 mm (men = 10.04 mm, women = 9.64 mm), 8.09 mm (men = 8.30 mm, women = 7.89 mm) and 9.08 mm (men = 9.48 mm, women = 8.69 mm). The mean values of apparent width/width ratio measured on the cast photographs were 63.69 mm for the lateral incisor/central incisor and 78.35 mm for canine/lateral incisor. No statistically significant difference was found between the mean values of the apparent width/width ratio of the right and left sides and between men and women. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed a minor asymmetry between left and right side anterior teeth among the participants. The width to length ratio of the central and lateral incisors was similar for both genders, with minor differences in the canines. A squarish form of anterior teeth for the Saudi population with dimensional similarities to the Turkish population was found.
