Alkylating agents damage DNA and proteins and are widely used in cancer chemotherapy. While cellular responses to alkylation-induced DNA damage have been explored, knowledge of how alkylation affects global cellular stress responses is sparse. Here, we examined the effects of the alkylating agent methylmethane sulfonate (MMS) on gene expression in mouse liver, using mice deficient in alkyladenine DNA glycosylase (Aag), the enzyme that initiates the repair of alkylated DNA bases. MMS induced a robust transcriptional response in wild-type liver that included markers of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress/unfolded protein response (UPR) known to be controlled by XBP1, a key UPR effector. Importantly, this response is significantly reduced in the Aag knockout. To investigate how AAG affects alkylation-induced UPR, the expression of UPR markers after MMS treatment was interrogated in human glioblastoma cells expressing different AAG levels. Alkylation induced the UPR in cells expressing AAG; conversely, AAG knockdown compromised UPR induction and led to a defect in XBP1 activation. To verify the requirements for the DNA repair activity of AAG in this response, AAG knockdown cells were complemented with wild-type Aag or with an Aag variant producing a glycosylase-deficient AAG protein. As expected, the glycosylase-defective Aag does not fully protect AAG knockdown cells against MMS-induced cytotoxicity. Remarkably, however, alkylation-induced XBP1 activation is fully complemented by the catalytically inactive AAG enzyme. This work establishes that, besides its enzymatic activity, AAG has noncanonical functions in alkylation-induced UPR that contribute to cellular responses to alkylation.

Motivated by recent experimental breakthroughs, we propose a strategy for designing two-dimensional spin-lattices with competing interactions that lead to nontrivial emergent quantum states. We consider S = 1/2 nanographenes with C3 symmetry as building blocks, and we leverage the potential to control both the sign and the strength of exchange with first neighbors to build a family of spin models. Specifically, we consider the case of a Heisenberg model in a triangle-decorated honeycomb lattice with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions whose ratio can be varied in a wide range. On the basis of the exact diagonalization of both Fermionic and spin models, we predict a quantum phase transition between a valence bond crystal of spin singlets with triplon excitations living in a Kagomé lattice and a Néel phase of effective S = 3/2 in the limit of dominant ferromagnetic interactions.

Biotechnology offers solutions and opportunities to meet various societal demands, thereby contributing to significant scientific advancements. This study aimed to characterize the technological development of biotechnology in the healthcare sector in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, from 2016 to 2022 by analyzing patents filed by and granted to public and private Higher Education institutions. For data collection, a quantitative exploratory approach was employed using statistical methods and a patent analysis of institutions in the patent database of the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), focusing on patents related to the healthcare field. Data were collected in October, November, and December. A total of 580 patent records were collected from the INPI, belonging to Sections A and C of the International Patent Classification (IPC) related to educational institutions. Furthermore, this study highlighted that higher education institutions have a higher number of patents in the healthcare field. These results provide an understanding of the strategic areas for technological development in biotechnology in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

PURPOSE: To analyze the prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in patients who survived moderate and severe forms of COVID-19 and the risk factors for LUTS six months after hospitalization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, patients were evaluated six months after hospitalization due to COVID-19. LUTS were assessed using the International Prostate Symptom Score. General health was assessed through the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the EQ5D-L5 scale, which evaluates mobility, ability to perform daily activities, pain and discomfort and completed a self-perception health evaluation. RESULTS: Of 255 participants, 54.1% were men and the median age was 57.3 [44.3 - 66.6] years. Pre-existing comorbidities included diabetes (35.7%), hypertension (54.5%), obesity (30.2%) and physical inactivity (65.5%). One hundred and twenty-four patients (48.6%) had a hospital stay >15 days, 181 (71.0%) were admitted to an ICU and 124 (48.6%) needed mechanical ventilation. Median IPSS was 6 [3-11] and did not differ between genders. Moderate to severe LUTS affected 108 (42.4%) patients (40.6% men and 44.4% women; p=0.610). Nocturia (58.4%) and frequency (45.9%) were the most prevalent symptoms and urgency was the only symptom that affected men (29.0%) and women (44.4%) differently (p=0.013). LUTS impacted the quality of life of 60 (23.5%) patients with women more severely affected (p=0.004). Diabetes, hypertension, and self-perception of worse general health were associated with LUTS. CONCLUSIONS: LUTS are highly prevalent and bothersome six months after hospitalization due to COVID-19. Assessment of LUTS may help ensure appropriate diagnosis and treatment in these patients.

Biopharmaceuticals have established an indisputable presence in the pharmaceutical pipeline, enabling highly specific new therapies. However, manufacturing, isolating, and delivering these highly complex molecules to patients present multiple challenges, including the short shelf-life of biologically derived products. Administration of biopharmaceuticals through inhalation has been gaining attention as an alternative to overcome the burdens associated with intravenous administration. Although most of the inhaled biopharmaceuticals in clinical trials are being administered through nebulization, dry powder inhalers (DPIs) are considered a viable alternative to liquid solutions due to enhanced stability. While freeze drying (FD) and spray drying (SD) are currently seen as the most viable solutions for drying biopharmaceuticals, spray freeze drying (SFD) has recently started gaining attention as an alternative to these technologies as it enables unique powder properties which favor this family of drug products. The present review focus on the application of SFD to produce dry powders of biopharmaceuticals, with special focus on inhalation delivery. Thus, it provides an overview of the critical quality attributes (CQAs) of these dry powders. Then, a detailed explanation of the SFD fundamental principles as well as the different existing variants is presented, together with a discussion regarding the opportunities and challenges of SFD as an enabling technology for inhalation-based biopharmaceuticals. Finally, a review of the main formulation strategies and their impact on the stability and performance of inhalable biopharmaceuticals produced via SDF is performed. Overall, this review presents a comprehensive assessment of the current and future applications of SFD in biopharmaceuticals for inhalation delivery.

BACKGROUND: A novel virulent bacteriophage infecting phytobacteria Pseudomonas cichorii (P. cichorii) was isolated from leafy vegetables in Brazil. P. cichorii is a Gram-negative soil phytobacterium, the causal agent of a number of economically important plant diseases worldwide. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, a new phage specific for P. cichorii was isolated from solid samples (lettuce, chicory and cabbage), designated vB_Pci_PCMW57. Electron microscopy revealed a small virion (~ 50-nm-diameter icosahedral capsid) with a short, non-contractile tail. The genome of vB_Pci_PCMW57 is 40,117 bp in size, with a GC content of 57.6% and encodes 49 open reading frames. The phage is genetically similar to P. syringae phages Pst_GM1 and Pst_GIL1, and the P. fluorescens phages WRT and KNP. According to electron microscopy and whole-genome sequence analysis, vB_Pci_PCMW57 should be classified as a Caudoviticetes, family Autographiviridae, subfamily Studiervirinae. CONCLUSIONS: The complete phage genome was annotated, and the sequence identity of the virus with other Pseudomonas viruses was higher than 95%. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a bacteriophage infecting Pseudomonas cichorii.

Coal mining activities are considered harmful to living organisms. These activities release compounds to the environment, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), metals, and oxides, which can cause oxidative damage to DNA. In this study, we compared the DNA damage and the chemical composition of peripherical blood of 150 individuals exposed to coal mining residues and 120 non-exposed individuals. Analysis of coal particles revealed the presence of elements such as copper (Cu), aluminum (Al), chrome (Cr), silicon (Si) and iron (Fe). The exposed individuals in our study had significant concentrations of Al, sulfur (S), Cr, Fe, and Cu in their blood, as well as hypokalemia. Results from the enzyme-modified comet assay (FPG enzyme) suggest that exposure to coal mining residues caused oxidative DNA damage, particularly purine damage. Furthermore, particles with a diameter of <2.5 µm indicate that direct inhalation could promote these physiological alterations. Finally, a systems biology analysis was performed to investigate the effects of these elements on DNA damage and oxidative stress pathways. Interestingly, Cu, Cr, Fe, and K are key nodes that intensely modulate these pathways. Our results suggest that understanding the imbalance of inorganic elements caused by exposure to coal mining residues is crucial to understanding their effect on human health.

Researchers have associated the therapeutic potential of probiotics with its ability to modulate gut microbiota, which is considered an "invisible organ" of the human body. The present study investigates the effects of probiotic supplementation on the gut microbiota composition of adults. The authors conducted a systematic review of the literature published in six different databases. The search followed PRISMA guidelines and aimed to identify randomized clinical trials on probiotic supplementation. All relevant publications indexed up to May 28, 2021, were retrieved. Then, the authors defined the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Two independent reviewers performed study screening, data extraction, and quality assessment. A total of 2,404 publications were retrieved, and eight studies met the eligibility criteria. The included randomized clinical trials were published between 2015 to 2020. The worldwide studies included adults aged from 18 to 79 years, most of whom were women (66.5%). Only one of the included studies observed significant effects on fecal microbiota composition in the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes phyla in comparison with the placebo treatment. Overall, this systematic review could not draw consistent conclusions on the effects of probiotic supplementation on the gut microbiota composition of adults.

The aim of this study was to use bibliometric techniques to provide a longitudinal view of the evolution over more than 50 years of the literature on esophageal cancer without focusing on a specific area. The Web of Science Core Collection database was searched for published articles on esophageal neoplasm. Different aspects of the articles were analyzed - country, journal, authors, keywords, and topics. The search returned 24,215 articles - the journal Diseases of the Esophagus present the most number of manuscripts (n = 858), followed by Annals of Surgical Oncology (n = 475).The most cited article was one by van Hagen et al. (2012) (2,807 citations). The most prevalent topic was oncology (n = 10,448), followed by surgery (n = 4,944). Most articles were original research (n = 22,697), mainly with the basic science study design and published by institutions in China. The analysis of the variables chosen, identified China as the country with the highest number of articles and showed that authors and institutions in Asia stand out when it comes to production of scientific information on esophageal cancer.

Air pollution is a global issue that impacts environmental inequalities, and air quality sensors can have a decisive role in city policymaking for future cities. Science and society are already aware that during the most challenging times of COVID-19, the levels of air pollution in cities decreased, especially during lockdowns, when road traffic was reduced. Several pollution parameters can be used to analyse cities' environmental challenges, and it is more pressing than ever to have city climate decisions supported by sensor data. We have applied a data science approach to understand the evolution of the levels of carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter 2.5, and particulate matter 10 between August 2021 and July 2022. The analysis of the air quality levels, captured for the first time via 80 monitoring stations distributed throughout the municipality of Lisbon, has allowed us to realize that nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter 10 exceed the levels that are recommended by the World Health Organization, thereby increasing the health risk for those who live and work in Lisbon. Supported by these findings, we propose a central role for air quality sensors for policymaking in future cities, taking as a case study the municipality of Lisbon, Portugal, which is among the European cities that recently proposed be climate-neutral and smart city by 2030.

Exposure to coal mining dust poses a substantial health hazard to individuals due to the complex mixture of components released during the extraction process. This study aimed to assess the oxidative potential of residual coal mining dust on human lymphocyte DNA and telomeres and to perform a chemical characterization of coal dust and urine samples. The study included 150 individuals exposed to coal dust for over ten years, along with 120 control individuals. The results revealed significantly higher levels of DNA damage in the exposed group, as indicated by the standard comet assay, and oxidative damage, as determined by the FPG-modified comet assay. Moreover, the exposed individuals exhibited significantly shorter telomeres compared to the control group, and a significant correlation was found between telomere length and oxidative DNA damage. Using the PIXE method on urine samples, significantly higher concentrations of sodium (Na), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), chlorine (Cl), potassium (K), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), and bromine (Br) were observed in the exposed group compared to the control group. Furthermore, men showed shorter telomeres, greater DNA damage, and higher concentrations of nickel (Ni), calcium (Ca), and chromium (Cr) compared to exposed women. Additionally, the study characterized the particles released into the environment through GC-MS analysis, identifying several compounds, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) such as fluoranthene, naphthalene, anthracene, 7H-benzo[c]fluorene, phenanthrene, pyrene, benz[a]anthracene, chrysene, and some alkyl derivatives. These findings underscore the significant health risks associated with exposure to coal mining dust, emphasizing the importance of further research and the implementation of regulatory measures to safeguard the health of individuals in affected populations.

Understanding the dissolution mechanisms of amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) and being able to link enhanced drug exposure with process parameters are key when formulating poorly soluble compounds. Thus, in this study, ASDs composed by itraconazole (ITZ) and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose acetate succinate (HPMCAS) were formulated with different polymer grades and drug loads (DLs) and processed by spray drying with different atomization ratios and outlet temperatures. Their in vitro performance and the ability to form drug-rich colloids were then evaluated by a physiologically relevant dissolution method. In gastric media, drug release followed a diffusion-controlled mechanism and drug-rich colloids were not formed since the solubility of the amorphous API at pH 1.6 was not exceeded. After changing to intestinal media, the API followed a polymer dissolution-controlled release, where the polymer rapidly dissolved, promoting the immediate release of API and thus leading to liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) and consequent formation of drug-rich colloids. However, the release of API and polymer was not congruent, so API surface enrichment occurred, which limited the further dissolution of the polymer, leading to a drug-controlled release. ASDs formulated with M-grade showed the highest ability to maintain supersaturation and the lowest tendency for AAPS due to its good balance between acetyl and succinoyl groups, and thus strong interactions with both the hydrophobic drug and the aqueous dissolution medium. The ability to form colloids increased for low DL (15%) and high specific surface area due to the high amount of polymer released until the occurrence of API surface enrichment. Even though congruent release was not observed, all ASDs formed drug-rich colloids that were stable in the solution until the end of the dissolution study (4 h), maintaining the same size distribution (ca. 300 nm). Drug-rich colloids can, in vivo, act as a drug reservoir replenishing the drug while it permeates. Designing ASDs that are prone to form colloids can overcome the solubility constraints of Biopharmaceutics Classification System (BCS) II and IV drugs, posing as a reliable formulation strategy.

Gliomas represent 80% of all primary malignant brain tumors in adults. In view of this public health problem, the early detection through sensitive and specific molecular tumor markers analysis can help to improve gliomas diagnosis and prognosis as well as their staging, assessment of therapeutic response and detection of recurrence. Therefore, this review focuses in current gliomas tumor markers, IDH-1/2, 1p/19q, MGMT, ATRX, TERT, H3, EGFR, BRAF and Ki67 used in clinic worldwide and their importance to early detection, glioma histological and molecular classification as well as in predicting patient's therapeutic response. In addition, we present what are the steps in the requesting process for this type of examination in the Brazilian Public Health System (SUS) scope, which attends most of the Brazilian population. Thereby, this article is useful in demonstrating which markers are used in the clinical practice for glioma patients and can be performed in the SUS through partnerships/agreements between specialized health centers and clinical analysis laboratories. It is hoped that this work clarifies, the necessary subsidies to carry out the research of tumor markers in all institutions that serve SUS users, providing a service with equal conditions.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Recent studies in young adults have questioned the influence of discrepancies between central and maximal intercuspal positions in temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). However, whether this finding was because this type of etiologic agent requires time for the development of changes in the condylar position is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to use cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to evaluate the presence or absence of discrepancies between the centric relation (CR) and maximum intercuspation (MI) in younger and older adults in populations with or without TMDs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample was composed of 80 volunteers, 40 younger individuals aged 18 to 25 years (27 women and 13 men), half with and half without TMD symptoms, and 40 older participants aged 35 to 50 years (30 women and 10 men), half with and half without TMD symptoms. The TMD symptoms were diagnosed by using the diagnostic (standard) criteria for TMD research (RDC/TMD). Two CBCT scans were performed on each participant, one in MI and another in CR. Measurements of the joint space were performed in coronal and sagittal cuts of the temporomandibular joints, and the collected data were statistically analyzed by using the Mann-Whitney U test (α=.05). RESULTS: No significant differences were found when the CR and MI positions and the presence or absence of TMD symptoms were compared in the younger and older groups. However, when the younger and older groups were compared, significant differences were found in all measures used in this study. CONCLUSIONS: The condyle and mandibular fossa do not seem to be influenced by the CR or MI positions or by the presence or absence of TMD symptoms, but age seems to lead to a quantitative increase in the relationship between these structures.

During the welding activities many compounds are released, several of these cause oxidative stress and inflammation and some are considered carcinogenic, in fact the International Agency for Research on Cancer established that welding fumes are carcinogenic to humans. The aim of the present study was to analyze the cytotoxic and genotoxic potential of exposure to welding fumes and to determine concentrations of metals in blood and urine of occupationally exposed workers. We included 98 welders and 100 non-exposed individuals. Our results show significant increase in the frequency of micronuclei (MN), nucleoplasmic bridges (NPB), nuclear buds (NBUD) and necrotic cells (NECR) in cytokinesis-block micronucleus cytome (CBMN-Cyt) assay, as well as in the telomere length (TL) of the exposed individuals with respect to the non-exposed group. In the analysis of the concentrations of inorganic elements using PIXE method, were found higher concentrations of Cr, Fe and Cu in the urine, and Cr, Fe, Mg, Al, S, and Mn in the blood in the exposed group compared to the non-exposed group. A significant correlation was observed between MN and age and between NPB and years of exposure. Additionally, we found a significant correlation for TL in relation to MN, NPB, age and years of exposure in the exposed group. Interestingly, a significant correlation between MN and the increase in the concentration of Mg, S, Fe and Cu in blood samples of the exposed group, and between MN and Cr, Fe, Ni and Cu in urine. Thus, our findings may be associated with oxidative and inflammatory damage processes generated by the components contained in welding fumes, suggesting a high occupational risk in welding workers.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on clinical and surgical practice, educational activities, health and lifestyle behavior of Brazilian urology residents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A web-based survey was sent to 468 Brazilian urology residents from postgraduate years (PGY) 3 to 5 to collect data on clinical practice and training after 4 months of COVID-19. We also assessed health-related and behavior changes, rate of infection by SARS-CoV-2, deployment to the front line of COVID-19, residents' concerns, and access to personal protective equipment (PPE). RESULTS: Massive reductions in elective and emergency patient consultations, diagnostic procedures and surgeries were reported across the country, affecting PGY 3 to 5 alike. Most in-person educational activities were abolished. The median damage to the urological training expected for 2020 was 6.0 [3.4 -7.7], on a scale from 0 to 10, with senior residents estimating a greater damage (P < 0.001). Educational interventions developed included online case-based discussions, subspeciality conferences and lectures, and grand rounds. Most senior residents favored extending residency to compensate for training loss and most younger residents favored no additional training (p< 0.001). Modifications in health and lifestyle included weight gain (43.8%), reduced physical activity (68.6%), increased alcoholic intake (44.9%) and cigarette consumption (53.6%), worsening of sexual life (25.2%) and feelings of sadness or depression (48,2%). Almost half were summoned to work on the COVID-19 front-line and 24.4% had COVID-19. Most residents had inadequate training to deal with COVID-19 patients and most reported a shortage of PPE. Residents' concerns included the risk of contaminating family members, being away from residency program, developing severe COVID-19 and overloading colleagues. CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 had a massive impact in Brazilian urology residents´ training, health and lifestyle behavior, which may reflect what happened in other medical specialties. Studies should confirm these findings to help developing strategies to mitigate residents' losses.

In the current study, we demonstrate a structured approach to downstream process development for spray dried amorphous solid dispersions. Direct compression is generally not suitable due to typically poor flow of spray dried powders in tablets. Roller compaction (RC) is therefore the method of choice to enable spray dried dispersion downstream processing. Here, a structured experimental design of RC process parameters was used. The objective was to identify process conditions that lead to improved powder flow without compromising tablet robustness. Ten blends were compacted using different process parameters, and subsequently compressed into tablets. The impact of process parameters on granules and tablet properties was analyzed. We demonstrate that compaction force, gap and mesh aperture have major impact on RC outcomes. A combination of large gap and low force was identified as optimum combination of RC process parameters leading to powder flow improvement that could guarantee low tablet weight variation and at the same prevented loss of blend compressibility.

Proteins carry out a wide range of functions that are tightly regulated in space and time. Protein phosphorylation is the most common post-translation modification of proteins and plays a key role in the regulation of many biological processes. The finding that many phosphorylated residues are not solvent exposed in the unphosphorylated state opens several questions for understanding the mechanism that underlies phosphorylation and how phosphorylation may affect protein structures. First, because kinases need access to the phosphorylated residue, how do such buried residues become modified? Second, once phosphorylated, what are the structural effects of phosphorylation of buried residues, and do they lead to changed conformational dynamics? We have used the ternary complex between p27Kip1 (p27), Cdk2, and cyclin A to study these questions using enhanced sampling molecular dynamics simulations. In line with previous NMR and single-molecule fluorescence experiments, we observe transient exposure of Tyr88 in p27, even in its unphosphorylated state. Once Tyr88 is phosphorylated, we observe a coupling to a second site, thus making Tyr74 more easily exposed and thereby the target for a second phosphorylation step. Our observations provide atomic details on how protein dynamics plays a role in modulating multisite phosphorylation in p27, thus supplementing previous experimental observations. More generally, we discuss how the observed phenomenon of transient exposure of buried residues may play a more general role in regulating protein function.

The immunomodulatory properties of Brazilian red propolis (BRP) have been already described. Also, propolis have been proved to have antibacterial activity on Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. An adjuvant effect of red propolis oil was able to induce a significant anti-C. pseudotuberculosis humoral immune response. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the immunostimulant property of BRP hydroalcoholic extract (BRPHE) in a recombinant vaccine against caseous lymphadenitis. Mice BALB/c were allocated in three groups inoculated with: sterile saline solution (G1); BRPHE (G2); or BRPHE combined with the C. pseudotuberculosis rCP01850 recombinant protein (G3) in two doses within a 21-days-interval. Blood samples were collected for the total IgG, IgG1 and IgG2a measurement. Mice were challenged with a virulent C. pseudotuberculosis strain, and other 6 mice were used for IFN-γ and IL-10 levels determination after splenocyte stimulation with the recombinant antigen. G3 showed higher significant levels of antibodies on the 42nd experimental day, with a high IgG2a/IgG1 proportion. G2 and G3 presented significant production of IFN-γ and IL-10, while G3 presented the higher levels of IFN-γ (p < 0.05). After challenge, G2 showed a survival rate of 20%, while 70% of mice from G3 survived the experimental challenge. In conclusion, BRPHE used alone has immunostimulant properties specially on cellular immune response, and when used in combination with the recombinant protein rCP01850 induces cellular and humoral immune responses as well as a significant survival of inoculated mice.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on clinical practice, income, health and lifestyle behavior of Brazilian urologists during the month of April 2020. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 39-question, web-based survey was sent to all urologist members of the Brazilian Society of Urology. We assessed socio-demographic, professional, health and behavior parameters. The primary goal was to evaluate changes in urologists' clinical practice and income after two months of COVID-19. We also looked at geographical differences based on the incidence rates of COVID-19 in different states. RESULTS: Among 766 urologists who completed the survey, a reduction ≥ 50% of patient visits, elective and emergency surgeries was reported by 83.2%, 89.6% and 54.8%, respectively. An income reduction of ≥ 50% was reported by 54.3%. Measures to reduce costs were implemented by most. Video consultations were performed by 38.7%. Modifications in health and lifestyle included weight gain (32.9%), reduced physical activity (60.0%), increased alcoholic intake (39.9%) and reduced sexual activity (34.9%). Finally, 13.5% of Brazilian urologists were infected with SARS-CoV-2 and about one third required hospitalization. Urologists from the highest COVID-19 incidence states were at a higher risk to have a reduction of patient visits and non-essential surgeries (OR=2.95, 95% CI 1.86 - 4.75; p< 0.0001) and of being infected with SARS-CoV-2 (OR=4.36 95%CI 1.74-10.54, p=0.012). CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 produced massive disturbances in Brazilian urologists' practice, with major reductions in patient visits and surgical procedures. Distressing consequences were also observed on physicians' income, health and personal lives. These findings are probably applicable to other medical specialties.
