RESUMO

In this paper, a compact silicon-based photonic microwave frequency downconverter with broadband operation capability and continuous phase shift tunability is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The photonic converter mainly comprises two micro-ring modulators (MRMs) connected in parallel and a cascaded resonator-based optical bandpass filter (OBPF) whose size is merely 200 × 700 µm2. In the proposed device, a radio frequency (RF) signal and a local oscillator (LO) signal drive the two MRMs for realizing the electro-optic conversion. The OBPF is utilized for selecting the first-order sidebands of both RF and LO signals. By manipulating the phase difference between the RF and LO optical sidebands through thermal-optic effect, the phase of the obtained intermediate frequency (IF) signal from a photodiode can be tuned continuously. Experimental results demonstrate a 137° phase shift while the RF signals of 20 and 40 GHz are downconverted to an IF signal of 0.4 GHz, which indicates the photonic microwave downconverter can be used in the Ka-band phased-array receiver.

A polarization-insensitive multimode antisymmetric waveguide Bragg grating (MASWBG) filter based on an SiN-Si dual-layer stack is demonstrated. Carefully optimized grating corrugations patterned on the sidewall of a silicon waveguide and SiN overlay are used to perturbate TE and TM modes, respectively. Furthermore, the lateral-shift apodization technique is utilized to improve the sidelobe suppression ratio (SLSR). A good overlap between the passbands measured in TE and TM polarization states is obtained. Insertion losses, SLSRs, and 3-dB bandwidths of measured passbands in TE/TM polarizations are 1/1.72 dB, 18.5/19.1 dB, and 5.1/3.5 nm, respectively.

Two-dimensional (2-D) optical phased arrays (OPAs) usually suffer from limited scan ranges and small aperture sizes. To overcome these bottlenecks, we utilize an aperiodic 32 × 32 grid to increase the beam scanning range and furthermore distribute 128 grating antennas sparsely among 1024 grid points so as to reduce the array element number. The genetic algorithm is used to optimize the uneven grid spacings and the sparse distribution of grating antennas. With these measures, a 128-channel 2-D OPA operating at 1550 nm realizes a grating-lobe-free steering range of 53° × 16°, a field of view of 24° × 16°, a beam divergence of 0.31° × 0.49°, and a sidelobe suppression ratio of 9 dB.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, several studies have applied advanced AI methods, i.e., deep reinforcement learning, in discovering more efficient treatment policies for sepsis. However, due to a paucity of understanding of sepsis itself, the existing approaches still face a severe evaluation challenge, that is, how to properly evaluate the goodness of treatments during the learning process and the effectiveness of the final learned treatment policies. METHODS: We propose a deep inverse reinforcement learning with mini-tree model that integrates different aspects of factors into the reward formulation, including the critical factors in causing mortality and the key indicators in the existing sepsis treatment guidelines, in order to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of treatments during learning. A new off-policy evaluation method is then proposed to enable more robust evaluation of the learned policies by considering the weighted averaged value functions estimated until the current step. RESULTS: Results in the MIMIC-III dataset show that the proposed methods can achieve more efficient treatment policies with higher reliability compared to those used by the clinicians. CONCLUSIONS: A more sound and comprehensive evaluation of treatments of sepsis should consider the most critical factors in infulencing the mortality during treatment as well as those key indicators in the existing sepsis diagnosis guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Ophiorrhiza pumila (Rubiaceae) is capable of producing camptothecin (CPT), one monoterpene indole alkaloid extensively employed in the treatment of multiple cancers. Transcription factors (TFs) GATA are a group of transcription regulators involved in plant development and metabolism, and show the feature of binding to the GATA motif within the promoters of target genes. However, GATA TFs have not been characterized in O. pumila. RESULT: In this study, a total of 18 GATA genes classified into four subfamilies were identified, which randomly distributed on 11 chromosomes of O. pumila. Synteny analysis of GATA genes between O. pumila and other plant species such as Arabidopsis thaliana, Oryza sativa, Glycine max, Solanum lycopersicum, Vitis vinifera, and Catharanthus roseus genomes were analyzed. Tissue expression pattern revealed that OpGATA1 and OpGATA18 were found to be correlated with ASA, MK, CPR and GPPS, which were highly expressed in leaves. OpGATA7, showed high expression in roots as most of the CPT biosynthetic pathway genes did, suggesting that these OpGATAs may be potential candidates regulating CPT biosynthesis in O. pumila. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we systematically analyzed the OpGATA TFs, and provided insights into the involvement of OpGATA TFs from O. pumila in CPT biosynthesis.

We demonstrate a high efficiency, high linearity and high-speed silicon Mach-Zehnder modulator based on the DC Kerr effect enhanced by slow light. The two modulation arms based on 500-µm-long grating waveguides are embedded with PN and PIN junctions, respectively. A comprehensive comparison between the two modulation arms reveals that insertion loss, bandwidth and modulation linearity are improved significantly after employing the DC Kerr effect. The complementary advantages of the slow light and the DC Kerr effect enable a modulation efficiency of 0.85 V·cm, a linearity of 115 dB·Hz2/3, and a bandwidth of 30 GHz when the group index of slow light is set to 10. Furthermore, 112 Gbit/s PAM4 transmission over 2 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) with bit error ratio (BER) below the soft decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold is also demonstrated.

We demonstrate Ge/Si high-power and high-speed distributed traveling wave photodetectors (TWPD) by using the inductive gain peaking technique. Input terminals of TW electrodes are open to enhance RF output efficiencies to output loads. Furthermore, optimized on-chip spiral inductors are incorporated at output terminals of TW electrodes to alleviate bandwidth degradations caused by the absences of matching impedances. A comprehensive equivalent circuit model is developed to calculate the frequency response of this scheme. It is used to optimize the design, and then is validated by measurement results. After inducing on-chip inductors, the bandwidths of 4-stage and 8-stage TWPDs are improved from 32 to 44 GHz and 16 to 24 GHz, respectively. Maximum RF output powers of 4-stage and 8-stage TWPDs with on-chip inductors are measured to be 5.7 dBm and 9.4 dBm at 20 GHz, respectively.

Asymmetrical directional couplers aided with subwavelength sidewall corrugations are used to realize ultra-compact silicon mode (de)multiplexers at C-band. Three mode (de)multiplexers with ultra-short coupling lengths of 5.6/6.5/7.7 µm are designed to enable low-loss mode conversions between TE0 and TE1/2/3 modes. They are then cascaded to build a four-channel mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) link. The four mode channels present minimal on-chip insertion losses of 0.2/0.7/0.7/0.9 dB at their peak wavelengths. Measured cross talk levels of the four mode channels are better than -18.0/-19.1/-16.0/-18.2 dB within the wavelength range from 1530 nm to 1580 nm.

Fast-charging batteries have attracted great attention, and are anticipated to charge electrical vehicles and consumer electronics to full-capacity in several minutes. However, commercial electrode materials in batteries generally have a limited rate performance and are difficult to be used in fast-charging batteries. Designing electrodes with an aligned structure is an effective way to shorten the ion transport path and improve the rate performance of a battery. The excellent electronic conductivity of carbon-based electrodes is another key factor for increasing the rate capability of rechargeable batteries. Therefore, aligned carbon-based electrodes (ACBEs) can significantly improve the power density by combining the advantages of an aligned structure and carbon-based materials. In this review, the mechanism, advantages, and challenges of ACBEs for fast-charging batteries are evaluated, and then the design and preparation methods of ACBEs based on their different dimensions are summarized, and their applications in different batteries are illustrated. Finally, the future development of ACBEs for fast-charging batteries is considered.

One-dimensional polarization-independent grating couplers are demonstrated with the aid of the adaptive genetic algorithm optimization. By adjusting the relative weight between the coupling efficiency and the bandwidth of the polarization-dependent loss (PDL), we control the evolution direction and customize the final performance of the device. Two specific designs are generated by giving more weight to the coupling efficiency and the PDL bandwidth, respectively. Coupling efficiencies of the first design are measured to be -7.6dB and -7.9dB at 1550 nm for TE and TM polarizations, respectively, while its 1.0 dB PDL bandwidth is 25.0 nm. In contrast, the second design presents higher coupling efficiencies of -7.6dB and -7.2dB at 1550 nm for TE and TM polarizations, respectively. However, its 1.0 dB PDL bandwidth is 22.0 nm.

BACKGROUND: A fracture in the isolated greater trochanter is an infrequent type of femoral intertrochanteric fracture. The gluteus medius and gluteus minimus are abducent muscle groups with attachments located on the greater trochanter. Thus, a fracture of the greater trochanter could cause avulsion injury of these attachment points and eventually affect the abducent function of the hip joint and cause chronic pain. Despite these prospects, the impact of a greater trochanter fracture on abducent strength and hip joint function have yet to be investigated. METHODS: Patients who were diagnosed with an isolated greater trochanter fracture (via computed tomography scan and X-ray) and underwent conservative treatment from June 2013 to October 2016 were included in the present study. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to verify the morbidity of recessive fractures. Patients' Harris Hip Scores were determined at 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months and the abducent strength and range of motion of the hip joint on the injured side were analyzed and compared to those on the healthy side. RESULT: Among 32 patients, there were 7 individuals diagnosed with isolated greater trochanter fractures by MRI, and 25 individuals whose fractures were found to have extended into the intertrochanteric region, wherein the recessive intertrochanteric region fractures had no relationship with patients' age, gender, or weight. After 12 months of conservative treatment, 7 patients still complained of pain in the hip joint. The average Harris Hip Score was 87.84 ± 4.83, and the abducent range of the hip joint on the injured side (42.02 ± 13.93°) was not significantly different from that of the healthy side (46.24 ± 7.93°). The abducent strength of the hip joint of the injured side was 121.32 ± 41.06 N which was significantly lower than that of healthy side (137.44 ± 42.21 N). CONCLUSION: Results from this investigation suggest that an isolated greater trochanter fracture attenuates the abducent strength of the hip joint, which may be related to injuries of the ligaments and muscles around the greater trochanter. The surgical skills and methods of addressing isolated greater trochanter fractures merit further investigation.

Tropane alkaloids (TAs), which are anticholinergic agents, are an essential class of natural compounds, and there is a growing demand for TAs with anesthetic, analgesic, and spasmolytic effects. Anisodus acutangulus (Solanaceae) is a TA-producing plant that was used as an anesthetic in ancient China. In this study, we assembled a high-quality, chromosome-scale genome of A. acutangulus with a contig N50 of 7.4 Mb. A recent whole-genome duplication occurred in A. acutangulus after its divergence from other Solanaceae species, which resulted in the duplication of ADC1 and UGT genes involved in TA biosynthesis. The catalytic activities of H6H enzymes were determined for three Solanaceae plants. On the basis of evolution and co-expressed genes, AaWRKY11 was selected for further analyses, which revealed that its encoded transcription factor promotes TA biosynthesis by activating AaH6H1 expression. These findings provide useful insights into genome evolution related to TA biosynthesis and have potential implications for genetic manipulation of TA-producing plants.

Plant U-box (PUB) proteins are ubiquitin ligases (E3) involved in multiple biological processes and in response to plant stress. However, the various aspects of the genome and the differences in functions between the U-box E3 (UBE3) ubiquitin ligases remain quite obscure in Salvia miltiorrhiza. The 60 UBE3 genes in the S. miltiorrhiza genome were recognized in the present study. The phylogenetic analysis, gene structure, motifs, promoters, and physical and chemical properties of the genes were also examined. Based on the phylogenetic relationship, the 60 UBE3 genes were categorized under six different groups. The U-box domain was highly conserved across the family of UBE3 genes. Analysis of the cis-acting element revealed that the UBE3 genes might play an important role in a variety of biological processes, including a reaction to the abscisic acid (ABA) treatment. To investigate this hypothesis, an ABA treatment was developed for the hairy roots of S. miltiorrhiza. Thirteen out of the UBE3 genes significantly increased after the ABA treatment. The co-expression network revealed that nine UBE3 genes might be associated with phenolic acids or tanshinone biosynthesis. The findings of the present study brought fresh and new understanding to the participation of the UBE3 gene family in plants, specifically in their biological responses mediated by the ABA. In S. miltiorrhiza, this gene family may be crucial during the ABA treatment. Significantly, the results of this study contribute novel information to the understanding of the ubiquitin ligase gene and its role in plant growth.

Ophiorrhiza pumila (Rubiaceae) is an herbaceous plant that grows streamside in forest gullies or wetlands in the shade. Complete chloroplast genome of O. pumila was obtained and analyzed its phylogeny relationship within Rubiaceae plants. The results showed that the genome had a typical quadripartite structure of 154,385 bp, and contained a total of 112 unique genes, including 79 protein-coding genes, 29 tRNA genes, and 4 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that O. pumila is sister to a highly supported clade composed of 10 species including Morinda officinalis, Gynochthodes cochinchinensis, Saprosma merrillii, Hedyotis ovata, Foonchewia guangdongensis, Dunnia sinensis, Paederia scandens, Leptodermis scabrida, Rubia cordifolia, and Galium mollugo. The complete chloroplast genome provides valuable information for the phylogenetic analysis of O. pumila.

Background/objectives: Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-based artificial ligaments are one of the most commonly used grafts in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. However, the lack of favorable hydrophilicity and cell attachment for PET highly impeded its widespread application in clinical practice. Studies found that surface modification on PET materials could enhance the biocompatibility and bioactivity of PET ligaments. In this study, we immobilized bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) on the surface of PET ligaments mediated by polydopamine (PDA) coating and investigated the bioactivation and graft-to-bone healing effect of the modified grafts in vivo and in vitro. Methods: In this study, we prepared the PDA coating and subsequent BMP-2-immobilized PET artificial ligaments. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyze the morphological changes of the modified grafts. In addition, the surface wettability properties of the modified ligaments, amount of immobilized BMP 2, and the release of BMP-2 during a dynamic period up to 28 days were tested. Then, the attachment and proliferation of rat bone mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) on grafts were examined by SEM and Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, respectively. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) assay, RT-PCR, and Alizarin Red S staining were performed to test the osteoinduction property. For in vivo experiments, an extra-articular graft-to-bone healing model in rabbits was established. At 8 weeks after surgery, biomechanical tests, micro-CT, and histological staining were performed on harvested samples. Results: A surface morphological analysis verified the success of the PDA coating. The wettability of the PET artificial ligaments was improved, and more than 80% of BMP-2 stably remained on the graft surface for 28 days. The modified grafts could significantly enhance the proliferation, attachment, as well as expression of ALP and osteogenic-related genes, which demonstrated the favorable bioactivity of the grafts immobilized with BMP-2 in vitro. Moreover, the grafts immobilized with BMP-2 at a concentration of 138.4 ± 10.6 ng/cm2 could highly improve the biomechanical properties, bone regeneration, and healing between grafts and host bone after the implantation into the rabbits compared with the PDA-PET group or the PET group. Conclusion: The immobilization of BMP-2 mediated by polydopamine coating on PET artificial ligament surface could enhance the compatibility and bioactivity of the scaffolds and the graft-to-bone healing in vivo.

Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaire (BSSQ)-Deformity and BSSQ-Brace are the most widely used instruments for evaluating stress levels in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients under brace treatment, and good reliability and validity have been demonstrated across different cultures. Great stress has been found among many adolescents, becoming a major concern for professionals. However, no previous research has addressed the cultural adaptations and psychometric testing of BSSQ-Deformity and BSSQ-Brace in China or the stress levels in AIS patients. The purposes of our study were to evaluate the cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the BSSQ-Deformity and BSSQ-Brace and to investigate stress levels in Chinese (AIS) patients under brace treatment.The original (German) versions of BSSQ-Deformity and BSSQ-Brace were cross-culturally translated according to international guidelines. Psychometric properties such as reliability and construct validity were tested. Eighty-six AIS patients were included in our study, and 50 patients paid a second visit 3 to 7 days later to test reproducibility. Cronbach α and the intraclass coefficient were determined to assess internal consistency and reproducibility. Scoliosis Research Society patient questionnaire-22 (SRS-22) was applied to evaluate construct validity.The mean BSSQ-Deformity and BSSQ-Brace scores were 15.3 and 13.4 points, respectively. Severe stress was observed in 12% of patients due to brace treatment. Item analysis demonstrated that each item was scored under a normal distribution with no redundancy. Psychometric analysis revealed excellent internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.85 and 0.80, respectively) and reproducibility (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.85 and 0.90, respectively) for BSSQ-Deformity and BSSQ-Brace. The correlation coefficients of BSSQ-Deformity, BSSQ-Brace and SRS-22 were 0.48 and 0.63, respectively.In conclusion, BSSQ-Deformity and BSSQ-Brace have been successfully adapted to a Chinese background and psychometrically validated with excellent reliability and construct validity. Brace wearing is considered the main cause of stress in AIS patients under brace treatment.
