RESUMO

Nitroalkanes serve as essential intermediates in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and functional materials. To date, nitroalkanes are mainly prepared from homogeneous catalysts such as noble transition metal catalysts with poor recyclability. Herein, we propose a metal-organic framework-frustrated Lewis pair (MOF-FLP) heterogeneous catalyst for selectively reducing nitroolefins to nitroalkanes under moderate reaction conditions. MOF enrichment effect can significantly improve the catalytic efficiency compared to homogeneous FLP catalysts. Benefiting from the strong interaction between FLP and MOF, the MOF-FLP catalyst exhibits outstanding recyclability. This work not only provides a convenient route for nitroalkane synthesis but also showcases the potential of porous heterogeneous FLP catalysts, offering inspiration for future catalytic design strategies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Standard management for intrauterine lesions typically involves initial imaging followed by operative hysteroscopy for suspicious findings. However, the efficacy of routine outpatient hysteroscopy in women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART) remains uncertain due to a lack of decisive high-quality evidence. This study aimed to determine whether outpatient hysteroscopy is beneficial for infertile women who have unremarkable imaging results prior to undergoing ART. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following PRISMA guidelines, incorporating data up to May 31, 2023, from databases such as PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library. The primary outcome assessed was the live birth rate, with secondary outcomes including chemical pregnancy, clinical pregnancy rates, and miscarriage rates. Statistical analysis involved calculating risk ratios with 95% confidence intervals and assessing heterogeneity with the I2 statistic. RESULTS: The analysis included ten randomized control trials. Receiving outpatient hysteroscopy before undergoing ART was associated with increased live birth (RR 1.22, 95% CI 1.03-1.45, I2 61%) and clinical pregnancy rate (RR 1.27 95% CI 1.10-1.47, I2 53%). Miscarriage rates did not differ significantly (RR 1.25, CI 0.90-1.76, I2 50%). Subgroup analyses did not show a significant difference in clinical pregnancy rates when comparing normal versus abnormal hysteroscopic findings (RR 1.01, CI 0.78-1.32, I2 38%). We analyzed data using both intention-to-treat and per-protocol approaches, and our findings were consistent across both analytical methods. CONCLUSIONS: Office hysteroscopy may enhance live birth and clinical pregnancy rates in infertile women undergoing ART, even when previous imaging studies show no apparent intrauterine lesions. Treating lesions not detected by imaging may improve ART outcomes. The most commonly missed lesions are endometrial polyps, submucosal fibroids and endometritis, which are all known to affect ART success rates. The findings suggested that hysteroscopy, given its diagnostic accuracy and patient tolerability, should be considered in the management of infertility. DATABASE REGISTRATION: The study was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systemic Review database (CRD42023476403).

RESUMO

Long interspersed nuclear element-1 (LINE-1) methylation serves as an indicator of global DNA methylation. This study explored the correlation between LINE-1 methylation and chronic kidney disease (CKD). We also evaluated whether LINE-1 methylation could modify the association between CKD and metal exposure. A total of 213 patients with clinically defined CKD, without hemodialysis and 416 age and sex matched controls were recruited. Levels of LINE-1 methylation, total urinary arsenic, blood lead, blood cadmium, and plasma selenium were assessed. The results reveal a positive association between LINE-1 methylation and CKD, with an odds ratio (OR) of 5.30 (95% confidence interval: 2.81 to 9.99). Total urinary arsenic and blood cadmium concentrations were positively related with LINE-1 methylation. This study was the first to observe that low plasma selenium, high blood cadmium, and high blood lead levels significantly and additively interact with increased LINE-1 methylation to increase the OR of CKD. Additionally, high LINE-1 methylation interacted multiplicatively with low plasma selenium to increase the OR of CKD (p < 0.001). This study highlighted the significant association between LINE-1 hypermethylation and CKD. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that LINE-1 methylation can interact with high blood cadmium or low plasma selenium to affect CKD risk.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Striae distensae (SD) are cutaneous lesions that are caused by hormones or mechanical stress leading to rapid expansion of skin. Therefore, SD are now a cosmetic concern. However, improving SD is notoriously difficult. Among different treatments, energy-based devices (EBDs) are much more effective and controllable. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to determine the most effective type of EBD for improving the appearance of striae. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The population comprised patients suffering from striae. Different types of EBDs used to improve striae were compared. The primary outcome of the reduction in the width of striae was evaluated. A random-effects model was performed. The means and standard deviations were extracted. RESULTS: Eighteen randomized controlled trials were included. The network meta-analysis revealed that after a comparison among the 4 types of EBDs, no significant differences were observed in the reduction of striae width. CONCLUSION: Radiofrequency, ablative lasers, nonablative lasers, and intense pulsed light are all effective treatments for reducing the striae width. None of them was superior to the others. However, radiofrequency and ablative lasers may have the highest chance of improving the appearance of striae.

RESUMO

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 11 (SCA11) is a rare disease and the tau tubulin kinase 2 (TTBK2) gene was the causative gene. To date, only six SCA11 families have been reported. Here, we reported a Chinese SCA11 pedigree with cerebellar ataxia. Both patients in the family demonstrated typical clinical features of cerebellar ataxia and cerebellar atrophy on brain MRI. A novel heterozygous duplication mutation (c.1211_1217dupAGGAGAA) of the TTBK2 gene was identified in the proband using whole-exome sequencing (WES), which resulted in a frameshift mutation and formed a premature stop codon (p. N406Kfs*47). The mutation was detected in the proband's affected brother, and his unaffected mother, who with a lower percentage of the mutation and considered as an asymptomatic mutation carrier. Our study delineated the genotypic spectrum of SCA11.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess whether polymorphisms of haptoglobin (Hp) modify the relationship between dietary iron and the risk of gestational iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). METHODS: This study analyzed 1430 singleton pregnant women aged 20 ~ ≤ 48 years from the 2017-2019 National Nutrition and Health Survey of Pregnant Women in Taiwan. Sociodemographic, blood biochemical, Hp phenotype, and 24-h dietary recall data were collected. Erythropoiesis-related total prenatal supplementation was defined as the reported use of multivitamins and minerals, vitamin B complex, folate, and iron. RESULTS: Distributions of the Hp 1-1, Hp 2-1, and Hp 2-2 phenotypes were 13.6, 39.8, and 46.5%, respectively. Women with the Hp 1-1 phenotype had the lowest mean levels of serum ferritin (p-trend = 0.017), the highest prevalence of gestational ID (p-trend = 0.033) as well as the highest prevalence of gestational IDA (did not reach statistical differences, p-trend = 0.086). A gene-diet interaction on serum ferritin was observed between the Hp 1 and Hp 2 (2-1/2-2) alleles (p < 0.001). An adjusted multivariate logistic regression showed that compared to those with a normal blood iron status and who reported using erythropoiesis-related total prenatal supplements, those who did not had a 4.05-fold [odds ratio (OR) = 4.05 (95% confidence interval (CI) 2.63-6.24), p < 0.001] increased risk of gestational IDA. The corresponding ORs for carriers of the Hp 1 and Hp 2 alleles were 4.78 (95% CI 1.43-15.99) and 3.79 (95% CI 2.37-6.06), respectively. CONCLUSION: Pregnant women who are Hp 1 carriers are at increased risk for developing IDA if they do not meet the recommended dietary allowance for iron or use erythropoiesis-related prenatal supplements.

RESUMO

Facial skin nonsurgical resurfacing modalities, including laser, chemical peeling, and microneedling, have become common due to increasing public concern about skin aging. The potential effect of stem cell conditioned medium (CM) for antiaging has been reported in recent years, and such medium may be able to improve the efficacy of resurfacing modalities. This study investigated the efficacy of topical CM combined with resurfacing in comparison with resurfacing alone. We searched the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We used the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool (version 2) to assess the risk of bias of the included studies and Review Manager (version 5.4) for data analysis. Means and standard deviations of outcomes, namely wrinkle, pigmentation, pore, and overall improvement, were extracted. After screening, we included five RCTs in the analysis, four of which were quantitatively analyzed. The result revealed that stem cell CM significantly reduced wrinkles (P = 0.0006), pigmentation (P = 0.004), and pores (P = 0.01) and improved overall skin condition (P < 0.0001). In summary, we suggest that stem cell CM is a safe treatment that can enhance the efficacy of facial skin nonsurgical resurfacing modalities.Level of Evidence III This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. RESUMO

Adiponectin is an adipokine multipeptide hormone with insulin-sensitizing; anti-atherosclerotic; and anti-inflammatory properties. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) may be associated with low adiponectin. The adiponectin gene ADIPOQ is thought to be the only major gene responsible for plasma adiponectin levels; which are associated with diabetes and diabetic nephropathy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between ADIPOQ polymorphism and CKD. In addition; the combined effects of ADIPOQ polymorphism and diabetes and levels of total urinary arsenic and blood cadmium on CKD were also explored. This study included 215 CKD patients and 423 age-sex matched controls. The ADIPOQ polymorphisms were determined using the Agena Bioscience Mass ARRAY System. The levels of blood cadmium and urinary arsenic species were measured. The ADIPOQ rs182052 GA/AA genotype had a marginally lower odds ratio (OR) for CKD than the GG genotype. The OR (95% confidence interval; CI) was 16.33 (5.72-46.66) of CKD in subjects carrying the ADIPOQ rs182052 GG genotype and diabetes compared to non-diabetes subjects carrying the ADIPOQ rs182052 GA/AA genotype; the interaction term had p = 0.015; and the synergy index was 6.64 (1.81-24.36) after multivariate adjustment. A significant interaction of diabetes and ADIPOQ rs1501299 risk genotype increased the OR of CKD after multivariate adjustment with a synergy index of 0.31 (0.11-0.86) and a multiplicative interaction with p = 0.001. These results suggest that ADIPOQ rs182052 and rs1501299 risk genotypes may significantly modify the association between diabetes and CKD but not the association between total urinary arsenic and blood cadmium and CKD.

RESUMO

Background and Objectives: The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adolescents has increased rapidly in recent decades. However, the role of adipokines on pathophysiology in young-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus (YDM) is not clear. In this article, we explored the relationships between the adipokines (visfatin and retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4)) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) components in both YDM and late-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus (ODM). Materials and Methods: There were 36 patients with YDM (23.6 ± 4.8 years) and 36 patients with ODM (54.3 ± 10.1 years) enrolled. Visfatin, RBP4, and MetS components were measured. The relationships between visfatin, RBP4 and MetS components were assessed in YDM and ODM. Results: The visfatin, but not the RPB4 level, was significantly higher in YDM than in ODM. After adjusting for age and body mass index, visfatin was not related to any MetS components except that there was a negative correlation with fasting plasma glucose (FPG). As for RPB4, triglyceride was found to be positively and FPG negatively related to RBP4 in YDM. However, in ODM, the only positive relationship that existed was between RBP4 and diastolic blood pressure. Conclusions: In conclusion, both visfatin and RBP4 had certain roles in diabetes and MetS although their relationships were different in YDM and ODM. Further studies are needed to explore their physiological and pathological effects in glucose metabolism.

RESUMO

Tibialis anterior (TA) muscle has frequently been used for scientific experiments, particularly for muscle contractile assays, because of its anatomical advantages. However, classical evaluation methods for the TA muscle, such as EMG and force transducer, require experimental skills to acquire reliable results. Furthermore, because sacrificing experimental animals is usually indispensable for both methods, sequential observations cannot be performed. Therefore, developing a simple, objective, and animal friendly evaluation system was warranted. In this article, we introduce a novel, simple, and noninvasive in vivo evaluation method for the TA muscle called the toe-lift test (TLT), which is not only easy to perform but also capable of detecting contractile strength precisely. Because the TLT does not require experimental animal sacrifice, performing assessments over time, such as in sequential observation, is possible. This novel method represents a solution to the need for a simple, noninvasive, and effective method for TA muscle contractile evaluation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This exploratory study aimed to investigate factors related to infant deaths using a conceptual framework that explains the risk factors of infant deaths in developing countries. METHODS: The study adopted a cross-sectional study design and used data from the 2012 and 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Surveys, with a sample of 3694 singleton live births in 2012 and 3413 in 2017. RESULTS: Female infants had a lower chance of mortality compared to male infants [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 0.51; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.34-0.77]. Infants with a smaller birth size had a higher risk of infant death compared to those with an average size (aOR = 5.66; 95% CI = 3.66-8.77). The risk of infant death with a preceding birth interval of ≥24 months was lower than that with a preceding birth interval of <24 months (aOR = 0.48; 95% CI = 0.26-0.90). An older maternal age was a risk factor for infant death compared to younger mothers (aOR = 3.61; 95% CI = 1.42-9.23). Infants who were born in Sumatra (aOR = 0.38; 95% CI = 0.16-0.89) and Java and Bali (aOR = 0.33; 95% CI = 0.14-0.78) were less likely to die than infants who were born in Papua and Maluku. CONCLUSIONS: A higher infant death risk was associated with male babies and a shorter birth interval (<24 months). Mothers who perceived their babies to be small and mothers who were older (35-49 years old) were high-risk factors for infant mortality. Mothers who lived in Java and Bali as well as Sumatera were less likely to experience infant mortality compared to those who lived in Papua and Maluku.

RESUMO

Pediatric cancer survivors experiencing gonadotoxic chemoradiation therapy may encounter subfertility or permanent infertility. However, previous studies of cryopreservation of immature testicular tissue (ITT) have mainly been limited to in vitro studies. In this study, we aim to evaluate in vitro and in vivo bioluminescence imaging (BLI) for solid surface-vitrified (SSV) ITT grafts until adulthood. The donors and recipients were transgenic and wild-type mice, respectively, with fresh ITT grafts used as the control group. In our study, the frozen ITT grafts remained intact as shown in the BLI, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) analyses. Graft survival was analyzed by BLI on days 1, 2, 5, 7, and 31 after transplantation. The signals decreased by quantum yield between days 2 and 5 in both groups, but gradually increased afterwards until day 31, which were significantly stronger than day 1 after transplantation (p = 0.008). The differences between the two groups were constantly insignificant, suggesting that both fresh and SSV ITT can survive, accompanied by spermatogenesis, until adulthood. The ITT in both groups presented similar BLI intensity and intact cells and ultrastructures for spermatogenesis. This translational model demonstrates the great potential of SSV for ITT in pre-pubertal male fertility preservation.

RESUMO

Prepubertal boys with cancer may suffer from reduced fertility and maturity following gonadotoxic chemoradiotherapy. Thus, a viable method of immature testicular tissue (ITT) preservation is required in this cohort. In this study, we used poly-L-lactic acid electrospun scaffolds with two levels of fineness to support the development of ITT transplanted from transgenic donors to wild-type recipient mice. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of ITT transplantation and spermatogenesis after using the two scaffolds, employing bioluminescence imaging for evaluation. The results suggest that ITT from 4-week-old mice possessed the most potential in spermatogenesis on the 70th day, together with the fine electrospun scaffolds. Moreover, bioluminescent imaging intensity was observed in recipient mice for up to 107 days, approximately six times more than the coarse electrospun scaffold and the control group. This occurs since the fine scaffold is more akin to the microenvironment of native testicular tissue as it reduces stiffness resulting from micronization and body fluid infiltration. The thermal analysis also exhibited recrystallization during the biodegradation process, which can lead to a more stable microenvironment. Overall, these findings present the prospect of fertility preservation in prepubertal males and could serve as a framework for future applications.

RESUMO

The coordination between a ligand and a metal is a spontaneous and uncontrollable process. In this Article, we successfully observe the formation of metal coordination in a triphenylamine-functionalized salicylaldehyde Schiff base with a copper(II) ion. The ligand TPA-Py first reacts with Cu2+ in a stepwise process to afford the dynamic complex TPA-Py@Cu2+ ([ligand]:[Cu2+] = 1:1), which further reacts with an extra copper(II) ion to afford 2TPA-Py@4Cu2+ with the following stepwise (or cumulative) stability constants: K1 = 4.0694 × 103 and K2 = 1.0761 × 106, respectively. The entire metal coordination process can be visualized, and the coordination mode of the probe toward copper was further evaluated by ultraviolet-visible/fluorescence spectra, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, density functional theory calculations, high-resolution mass spectra, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic titrations. Compound TPA-Py exhibited excellent sensitivity and specificity toward copper(II) ions in THF/water media with a low limit of detection of 2.687 × 10-7 mol L-1. In addition, TPI-An-Py can be applied to the detection of Cu2+ in real samples with satisfactory recoveries in the range of 100-112% in lake water and 98-101% in tap water. This Article not only reports an excellent fluorescence probe for copper(II) ion detection but also presents an instance for more fully understanding the metal coordination process.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The coexistence of underweight (UW) and overweight (OW)/obese (OB) at the population level is known to affect iron deficiency (ID) anaemia (IDA), but how the weight status affects erythropoiesis during pregnancy is less clear at a population scale. This study investigated associations between the pre-pregnancy BMI (pBMI) and erythropoiesis-related nutritional deficiencies. DESIGN: Anthropometry, blood biochemistry and 24-h dietary recall data were collected during prenatal care visits. The weight status was defined based on the pBMI. Mild nutrition deficiency-related erythropoiesis was defined if individuals had an ID, folate depletion or a vitamin B12 deficiency. SETTING: The Nationwide Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan (Pregnant NAHSIT 2017-2019). PARTICIPANTS: We included 1456 women aged 20 to 45 years with singleton pregnancies. RESULTS: Among these pregnant women, 9·6 % were UW, and 29·2 % were either OW (15·8 %) or OB (13·4 %). A U-shaped association between the pBMI and IDA was observed, with decreased odds (OR; 95 % CI) for OW subjects (0·6; 95 % CI (0·4, 0·9)) but increased odds for UW (1·2; 95 % CI (0·8, 2·0)) and OB subjects (1·2; 95 % CI (0·8, 1·8)). The pBMI was positively correlated with the prevalence of a mild nutritional deficiency. Compared to normal weight, OB pregnant women had 3·4-fold (3·4; 95 % CI (1·4, 8·1)) higher odds for multiple mild nutritional deficiencies, while UW individuals had lowest odds (0·3; 95 % CI (0·1, 1·2)). A dietary analysis showed negative relationships of pBMI with energy, carbohydrates, protein, Fe and folate intakes, but positive relationship with fat intakes. CONCLUSION: The pre-pregnancy weight status can possibly serve as a good nutritional screening tool for preventing IDA during pregnancy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: As the number of people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV; PLHIV) in Indonesia has increased in recent years, more efforts have been expended to improve their health status. However, in a country where PLHIV are very much stigmatized, there has been little research concerning their quality of life (QoL). Hence, this study aimed to assess the QoL among PLHIV and its associated factors. Findings of this research can contribute to improving the health and wellbeing of PLHIV in Indonesia. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey with convenience sampling was conducted from June to September 2018, at four healthcare centers in Malang, Indonesia. PLHIV, aged 18 years or over, were asked if they would like to participate in this study when they came to a health center to receive services. To protect confidentiality, the healthcare staff at the clinics assisted with recruitment and face-to-face interviews with structured questionnaires. Measurements included sociodemographic, medication-related, social support, HIV-stigma, and QoL variables. RESULTS: In total, 634 PLHIV agreed to participate in this study. A multivariate linear regression analysis showed that being older, having a job, living in an urban area, having better access to healthcare services, adhering to medication, being in an antiretroviral therapy (ART) program for more than 1 year, experiencing a lower level of stigma, and receiving more social support were associated with a better QoL. The regression model had an adjusted R2 of 0.21. CONCLUSIONS: Findings from this research have significant policy implications. Policies focused on reducing social stigma and promoting medication adherence will likely have a positive impact on the QoL of PLHIV. Increasing public awareness and acceptance of PLHIV in Indonesia remains challenging, but would likely have significant impacts. Furthermore, interventions should also focus on reducing disparities in QoL between PLHIV living in rural areas and those in urban areas.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of music therapy on infants who underwent mechanical ventilation after cardiac surgery. METHODS: A prospective randomized controlled study was conducted in a provincial hospital in southeast China. The subjects were randomly divided into the music therapy (MT) group and the control group. Both groups were given standardized sedation treatment and routine nursing. Infants in the MT group received 60 min of MT three times a day. The sedation medication, Richmond sedation agitation scale (RASS) score, incidence of delirium, mechanical ventilation duration, length of cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) stay, restraint belt use time, and successful ventilation withdrawal rate were collected. RESULTS: Infants in the control group had a higher total amount of on-demand midazolam (p = .039). Infants in the MT group had a significantly lower incidence of delirium, shorter mechanical ventilation duration, and restraint band use time (p = .047, p = .046, and p = .038, respectively). Although infants in the MT group had a higher success rate of ventilation withdrawal, lower RASS scores, and shorter ICU stay, the difference was not statistically significant (p = .427, p = .585, and p = .068, respectively). CONCLUSION: MT in the ICU can reduce the use of on-demand sedative drugs, shorten mechanical ventilation, and reduce the occurrence of delirium in infants who underwent mechanical ventilation after cardiac surgery. MT is a safe and reliable treatment and worthy of clinical application.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To observe the effect of music video (MV) therapy on early postoperative pain in preschool children after cardiothoracic surgery. METHODS: 116 preschool children undergoing cardiothoracic surgery were randomly divided into the MV and control groups from June 2019 to March 2020. The related vital signs parameters, the Wong-Baker FACES pain rating scale, the FLACC scale, the number of postoperative PCA press and the cumulants of sufentanil use were recorded and analyzed. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences in general characteristics and preintervention data between the two groups. However, there were significantly lower in the heart rate, mean arterial pressure, respiratory rate, the number of postoperative PCA press, and the dosage of sufentanil in the MV group than those in the control group after the intervention. The Wong-Baker FACES and FLACC scales in the MV group were significantly lower than those in the control group at the time point of immediately after the first intervention, 1 day, and 2 days after the intervention. The two pain scores showed a downward trend over time, and the corresponding scores in the MV group were better than those in the control group. CONCLUSION: MV therapy can be an effective nonpharmaceutical intervention in the clinical to relieve children's postoperative pain after cardiothoracic surgery.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of music video therapy on pain among preschool children after cardiothoracic surgery. METHODS: Patients in the music video therapy (MVT) group received a 30-min music video intervention, while patients in the music therapy (MT) group received a 30-min musical intervention. Both groups were given their respective therapy three times a day for three days. Patients in the control group did not receive MVT or MV. Measures, including pain scores, vital signs (heart rate, mean arterial pressure, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation), and other postoperative indicators were recorded and analyzed. RESULTS: The MVT group showed a statistically significant decrease in heart rate, mean arterial pressure, and respiratory rate at the first day after surgery and pain scores at the first and second day after surgery compared to the MT group, but no significant difference was identified in oxygen saturation. The postoperative indicators including cumulative capacity of sufentanil use, the length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay, and the length of hospital stay in the MVT group were significantly lower than those in the control group. CONCLUSION: The findings provide further evidence to support the practice of music video therapy as a non-pharmaceutical intervention to reduce postoperative pain, reduce  the dosage of analgesics, shorten the length of ICU and hospital stay in preschool children after the cardiothoracic surgery.

RESUMO

A novel turn-on fluorescence probe L has been designed that exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity with a detection limit of 9.53 × 10-8 mol/L for the quantification of Zn2+. 1H-NMR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the unsymmetrical nature of the structure of the Schiff base probe L. An emission titration experiment in the presence of different molar fractions of Zn2+ was used to perform a Job's plot analysis. The results showed that the stoichiometric ratio of the complex formed by L and Zn2+ was 1:1. Moreover, the molecular structure of the mononuclear Cu complex reveals one ligand L coordinates with one Cu atom in the asymmetric unit. On adding CuCl2 to the ZnCl2/L system, a Cu-Zn complex was formed and a strong quenching behavior was observed, which inferred that the Cu2+ displaced Zn2+ to coordinate with the imine nitrogen atoms and hydroxyl oxygen atoms of probe L.
