RESUMO

AIM: In this study, we investigated the effects of Dendropanax morbifera extract (DME) on neuroprotection against ischemic damage in gerbils. METHODS: DME (100 or 300 mg/kg) was orally administered to gerbils for three weeks, and 2 h after the last DME treatment, transient forebrain ischemia in the common carotid arteries was induced for 5 min. The forebrain ischemia-related cognitive impairments were assessed by spontaneous motor activity and passive avoidance test one and four days after ischemia, respectively. In addition, surviving and degenerating neurons were morphologically confirmed by neuronal nuclei immunohistochemical staining and Fluoro-Jade C staining, respectively, four days after ischemia. Changes of glial morphology were visualized by immunohistochemical staining for each marker such as glial fibrillary acidic protein and ionized calcium-binding protein. Oxidative stress was determined by measurements of dihydroethidium, O2· (formation of formazan) and malondialdehyde two days after ischemia. In addition, glutathione redox system such as reduced glutathione, oxidized glutathione levels, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase activities were measured two days after ischemia. RESULTS: Spontaneous motor activity monitoring and passive avoidance tests showed that treatment with 300 mg/kg DME, but not 100 mg/kg, significantly alleviated ischemia-induced memory impairments. In addition, approximately 67 % of mature neurons survived and 29.3 % neurons were degenerated in hippocampal CA1 region four days after ischemia, and ischemia-induced morphological changes in astrocytes and microglia were decreased in the CA1 region after 300 mg/kg DME treatment. Furthermore, treatment with 300 mg/kg DME significantly ameliorated ischemia-induced oxidative stress, such as superoxide formation and lipid peroxidation, two days after ischemia. In addition, ischemia-induced reduction of the glutathione redox system in the hippocampus, assessed two days after the ischemia, was ameliorated by treatment with 300 mg/kg DME. These suggest that DME can potentially reduce ischemia-induced neuronal damage through its antioxidant properties.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is an advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method used to identify changes in microstructures in the brain's white matter. Severe brain injuries after trauma are associated with disorders of consciousness (DOC) and may result in hyponatremia due to damage to the hypothalamus. This case-control study aimed to use DTI to evaluate the hypothalamus in 36 patients with hyponatremia and DOC due to severe brain injuries. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-six patients with DOC after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and 36 healthy control subjects were enrolled in this study. The diagnosis of DOC was based on the coma recovery scale-revised (CRS-R). The 36 patients were divided into 2 groups: Group A (18 with hyponatremia, serum sodium level <135 mmol/L) and group B (18 without hyponatremia). The DTI scans were conducted using a 6-channel head coil on a 1.5T Philips Gyroscan Intera scanner. Among the DTI data, fractional anisotropy (FA) and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of the hypothalamus were analyzed. RESULTS Patient group A had a lower FA value (P=0.044) and higher ADC value (P=0.004) of the hypothalamus and showed a longer length of hospital stay (P=0.03), lower CRS-R score at discharge (P=0.01), and less change in CRS-R score (P=0.004) compared to patient group B. The improvements in the CRS-R score revealed a moderate negative correlation (r=-0.467) with the severity of the hyponatremia (P=0.004). CONCLUSIONS Post-traumatic hyponatremia was associated with hypothalamic injury and the presence and severity of hyponatremia were associated with poor clinical outcomes in DOC patients.

RESUMO

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease. Interleukin 31 (IL-31), a novel cytokine in AD, causes pruritus, typically characteristic of AD patients. The transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) is a cation channel activated by diverse noxious stimuli that has been studied in a variety of pruritic skin diseases. In this study, the AD animal model was generated by administering the hapten, trinitrochlorobenzene (TNCB), to Nc/Nga mice, and the degree of expression of the IL-31 receptor alpha (IL-31RA) and TRPV1 in the skin of these atopic models was evaluated. The Nc/Nga mice were divided into 3 groups: control, TNCB 2-weeks treated, and TNCB 8-weeks treated. After inducing AD, the skin lesions in each group were scored and compared, and the histology of the skin lesions and the IL-31RA and TRPV1 expression for each group were evaluated by analyzing immunohistochemistry. The results show a significant difference in the skin lesion scores between the groups. The immunohistochemistry evaluation highlighted the remarkable expression of IL-31RA and TRPV1 in the nerve fibers of the TNCB 8-weeks-treated group. We thus confirmed that the long-term application of TNCB induced chronic atopic-like dermatitis and that IL-31RA and TRPV1 were overexpressed in the peripheral nerve fibers in this AD model.

RESUMO

Phycocyanin (PC) is a natural blue pigment that has great commercial value in food and pharmaceutical industry. Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis is a photosynthetic spiral-shaped cyanobacterium containing a rich PC pigment. Autolysis is the enzymatic digestion of cells by the action of its own enzymes. To develop an effective and economical extraction process, an autolysis process was incorporated into the conventional freezing-thawing method. In the present study, 91% of maximal extraction yield of PC with 1.194 purity (A620/A280) was obtained via autolysis after 3 h of incubation at 37 °C without using an extraction salt solution or a successive freezing-thawing process. In addition to temperature, the initial concentration of bicarbonate in growth medium and the concentration of wet biomass are important parameters that influence the extraction yield of PC by autolysis.

RESUMO

In this study, we calculated the elastic properties of polypropylene composites mixed with ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers. We applied micromechanics models that use numerical analysis, conducted finite element analysis using the homogenization method, and comparatively analyzed the characteristics of polypropylene (PP) containing UHMWPE fibers as reinforcement. The results demonstrate that elastic properties improved as the volume fraction of UHMWPE fiber increased. It was confirmed that the fibers had anisotropic elastic properties due to the shape of the fibers. In addition, it is necessary to compare these findings with future experimental results to obtain data for developing UHMWPE-PP composites.

RESUMO

Platycodi radix is widely used in traditional herbal medicine for the treatment of bronchitis, asthma, pulmonary tuberculosis, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes. This study aimed to investigate cell proliferation (Ki-67) and apoptosis (Caspase-3) potential in squamous cell hyperplasia of the stomach induced by a Platycodi radix water extract in a subchronic toxicity study. One hundred formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded stomach tissues of rats treated with Platycodi radix at doses of 0, 500, 1,000, and 3,000 mg/kg body weight/day were used for the analysis. They were conventionally stained using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and immunohistochemically (IHC) stained using caspase-3 and Ki-67 antibodies. The incidence of squamous cell hyperplasia was significantly increased in the 3,000 mg/kg b.w./day treatment group in both sexes (p<0.01). However, the hyperplastic change was completely repaired after 4 weeks of recovery period. Ki-67 expression was similar in all groups, with no statistically significant differences among the groups. Caspase-3 expression was significantly increased in both sexes in the 3,000 mg/kg b.w./day treatment group (p<0.01), compared with the vehicle control groups, and then reduced to normal levels in the recovery groups in both sexes. In conclusion, this study showed that squamous cell hyperplasia induced by the Platycodi radix water extract in the limiting ridge of the stomach is not considered to be abnormal proliferative change; as a result, squamous cell hyperplasia is considered to be a non-adverse effect when induced by the oral administration of the Platycodi radix water extract once daily for 13 weeks in rats.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Muscle involvement in Behçet's disease (BD) is rare, and several cases have been reported in the literature. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the clinical, laboratory and imaging findings in adult patients presenting with BD-associated myositis before the diagnosis of BD. METHODS: We retrospectively screened patients who visited a locomotive medicine clinic presenting with myalgia, local swelling, or tenderness of extremities without an established diagnosis of BD. We enrolled patients whose pain in the extremities was proven to be suggestive of focal vasculitic myositis and who were eventually diagnosed as having BD at the initial visit or during follow-up. We thoroughly reviewed the clinical, histological and imaging findings and treatment outcomes in patients who presented with focal vasculitic myositis as the primary manifestation of BD. RESULTS: Ten adult patients with focal vasculitic myositis as the primary manifestation of BD were enrolled. The lower and upper extremities were affected in eight and two patients, respectively. The affected lower extremities were the calf (n = 6) and thigh muscles (n = 2). The common findings of MRI included high signal intensity of the affected muscles and intermuscular fascia on fat-suppressed images, suggestive of myofascitis and oedematous changes in the subcutaneous layer. The results of skin or muscle biopsy were suggestive of vasculitis. All the patients were pain-free at the short-term follow-up (1-3 weeks) after oral steroid therapy. CONCLUSION: Focal vasculitic myositis can be a primary manifestation of BD warranting medical attention. BD-associated myositis responds well to oral steroid therapy.

RESUMO

Tactile pressure sensors as flexible bioelectronic devices have been regarded as the key component for recently emerging applications in electronic skins, health-monitoring devices, or human-machine interfaces. However, their narrow range of sensible pressure and their difficulty in forming high integrations represent major limitations for various potential applications. Herein, we report fully integrated, active-matrix arrays of pressure-sensitive MoS2 transistors with mechanoluminescent layers and air dielectrics for wide detectable range from footsteps to cellular motions. The inclusion of mechanoluminescent materials as well as air spaces can increase the sensitivity significantly over entire pressure regimes. In addition, the high integration capability of these active-matrix sensory circuitries can enhance their spatial resolution to the level sufficient to analyze the pressure distribution in a single cardiomyocyte. We envision that these wide-range pressure sensors will provide a new strategy toward next-generation electronics at biomachine interfaces to monitor various mechanical and biological phenomena at single-cell resolution.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pyridoxine (PDX; vitamin B6), is an essential vitamin. PDX deficiency induces various symptoms, and when PDX is misused it acts as a neurotoxicant, inducing severe sensory neuropathy. RESULTS: To assess the possibility of creating a reversible sensory neuropathy model using dogs, 150 mg/kg of PDX was injected subcutaneously into dogs for 7 days and body weight measurements, postural reaction assessments, and electrophysiological recordings were obtained. In addition, the morphology of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and changes in glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) immunoreactive satellite glial cells and ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba-1) immunoreactive microglia/macrophages were assessed at 1 day, 1 week, and 4 weeks after the last PDX treatment. During the administration period, body weight and proprioceptive losses occurred. One day after the last PDX treatment, electrophysiological recordings showed the absence of the H-reflex in the treated dogs. These phenomena persisted over the four post-treatment weeks, with the exception of body weight which recovered to the pre-treatment level. Staining (CV and HE) results revealed significant losses of large-sized neurons in the DRG at 1 day and 1 week after PDX treatment cessation, but the losses were recovered at 4 weeks post-treatment. The Iba-1 and GFAP immunohistochemistry results showed pronounced increases in reactive microglia/macrophage and satellite glial cell at 1 day and 1 week, respectively, after the last PDX treatment, and thereafter, immunoreactivity decreased with increasing time after PDX treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that PDX-induced neuropathy is reversible in dogs; thus, dogs can be considered a good experimental model for research on neuropathy.

RESUMO

Fat-mass and obesity-associated protein (Fto) plays important roles in energy metabolism. It also acts as a demethylase and is most abundantly found in the brain. In the present study, we examined the spatial and temporal changes of Fto immunoreactivity after five minutes of transient forebrain ischemia in the hippocampus. In the control group, Fto immunoreactivity was mainly observed in the nucleus of pyramidal cells in the CA1 and CA3 regions as well as the polymorphic layer, granule cell layer, and subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus. Fto immunoreactivity was transiently, but not significantly, increased in the hippocampal CA3 region and the dentate gyrus two days after ischemia compared to mice without ischemia in the sham-operated group. Four days after ischemia, low Fto immunoreactivity was observed in the stratum pyramidale of the CA1 region because of neuronal death, but Fto immunoreactive cells were abundantly detected in the stratum pyramidale of the CA3 region, which is relatively resistant to ischemic damage. Thereafter, Fto immunoreactivity progressively decreased in the hippocampal CA1 and CA3 regions and the dentate gyrus until ten days after ischemia. At this time-point, Fto immunoreactivity was significantly lower in the hippocampal CA1 and CA3 regions and the dentate gyrus compared to that in the sham-operated group. The reduction of Fto immunoreactive structures in the hippocampus may be associated with impairments in Fto-related hippocampal function.

RESUMO

We investigated the effects of pyridoxine deficiency on ischemic neuronal death in the hippocampus of gerbil (n = 5 per group). Serum pyridoxal 5'-phosphate levels were significantly decreased in Pyridoxine-deficient diet (PDD)-fed gerbils, while homocysteine levels were significantly increased in sham- and ischemia-operated gerbils. PDD-fed gerbil showed a reduction in neuronal nuclei (NeuN)-immunoreactive neurons in the medial part of the hippocampal CA1 region three days after. Reactive astrocytosis and microgliosis were found in PDD-fed gerbils, and transient ischemia caused the aggregation of activated microglia in the stratum pyramidale three days after ischemia. Lipid peroxidation was prominently increased in the hippocampus and was significantly higher in PDD-fed gerbils than in Control diet (CD)-fed gerbils after ischemia. In contrast, pyridoxine deficiency decreased the proliferating cells and neuroblasts in the dentate gyrus in sham- and ischemia-operated gerbils. Nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels also significantly decreased in PDD-fed gerbils sham 24 h after ischemia. These results suggest that pyridoxine deficiency accelerates neuronal death by increasing serum homocysteine levels and lipid peroxidation, and by decreasing Nrf2 levels in the hippocampus. Additionally, it reduces the regenerated potentials in hippocampus by decreasing BDNF levels. Collectively, pyridoxine is an essential element in modulating cell death and hippocampal neurogenesis after ischemia.

RESUMO

In this study, the effect of microwave annealing (MWA), which has been attracting considerable attention as a low-thermal-budget method, on the high-k materials required for next-generation ultrahigh-integration semiconductor devices is investigated. Metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitor-structure devices are fabricated using HfO2 films, which are typical high-k materials; post deposition annealing (PDA) is then performed by MWA and compared to conventional thermal annealing (CTA). The current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics of the fabricated HfO2 MOS capacitors are measured to evaluate the leakage current, time-zero dielectric breakdown (TZDB), time-dependent dielectric breakdown (TDDB), and frequency dispersion. Compared to the as-deposited state, the PDA-treated HfO2 dielectric film is found to have reduced trap density, improved dielectric breakdown, frequency dispersion, and lifetime. In particular, the high-k HfO2 thin films treated with MWA exhibit excellent surface properties, including a low root-mean square roughness (Rq) of 0.141 nm, thickness of 49.3 nm, and low inter face trap density (Dit) of 7.82 × 1012 cm-2eV-1 and electrical properties such as a high breakdown electric field (EBD) of 10 MV/cm, and high breakdown to charge (QBD) of 1,000 C/cm². As a result, the MWA-treated high-k HfO2 thin films are smoother and denser than the CTA-treated thin films, and show better electrical properties and reliability, suggesting that the defects at Si the interface as well as in the high-k films are effectively removed.

RESUMO

In this study, we fabricated amorphous In-Ga-Zn-O thin-film transistors (TFTs) with a new structure, in which the source/drain (S/D) electrode is located on different planes. This structure made it possible to use materials with different work functions, in this case indium-tin-oxide (ITO) and titanium (Ti), as the source and drain electrodes to control the overall work function of the TFT. Among the fabricated TFTs, we measured the electrical properties by setting up the Ti (ΦTi≒3.4 eV) and ITO (ΦITO≒4.7 eV) electrodes as the source and drain, respectively. The off-planed S/D a-IGZO TFT showed excellent electrical characteristics: a threshold voltage of -0.33 V, a subthreshold swing of 219.9 mV/dec, field-effect-mobility of 18.1 cm²/V sec, and an Ion/Ioff ratio of 2.3×108. Additionally, the threshold voltage shift was the smallest in both the positive and negative biastemperature stress tests, respectively. As a result, the a-IGZO TFT with an off-planed S/D electrode is shown to be a promising structure capable of improving the electrical performance and reliability.

RESUMO

An electrochemical immunosensor employs antibodies as capture and detection means to produce electrical charges for the quantitative analysis of target molecules. This sensor type can be utilized as a miniaturized device for the detection of point-of-care testing (POCT). Achieving high-performance analysis regarding sensitivity has been one of the key issues with developing this type of biosensor system. Many modern nanotechnology efforts allowed for the development of innovative electrochemical biosensors with high sensitivity by employing various nanomaterials that facilitate the electron transfer and carrying capacity of signal tracers in combination with surface modification and bioconjugation techniques. In this review, we introduce novel nanomaterials (e.g., carbon nanotube, graphene, indium tin oxide, nanowire and metallic nanoparticles) in order to construct a high-performance electrode. Also, we describe how to increase the number of signal tracers by employing nanomaterials as carriers and making the polymeric enzyme complex associated with redox cycling for signal amplification. The pros and cons of each method are considered throughout this review. We expect that these reviewed strategies for signal enhancement will be applied to the next versions of lateral-flow paper chromatography and microfluidic immunosensor, which are considered the most practical POCT biosensor platforms.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: As a class of angiogenesis inhibitors, heparin conjugates have shown significant effectiveness in several studies. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of our current study is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of infusing the conjugate of low molecular weight heparin and taurocholate (LHT7), which has been developed as a potent angiogenesis inhibitor. METHODS: To evaluate its safety, the method of intravenous infusion was compared with its i.v. bolus administration. Intravenous infusion was administered at a rate of 400 µl/min/kg of body weight for 30 min. Pharmacokinetic (PK) analysis, organ accumulation, and plasma concentration profiles of LHT7 were measured. The anticancer effect of LHT7 was evaluated in murine and human xenograft models, and preclinical studies were performed in SD rats and beagle dogs. RESULTS: The results of the PK studies showed reduced organ accumulation in mice and the AUC(0-96 h) (area under the curve) was increased up to 1485 ± 125 h × µg/ml. The efficacy, at dose 1 mg/kg/2 d was higher for i.v. infusion than for i.v. bolus administration in both murine and human cancer models. The preclinical studies showed the safety dose of LHT7 is less than 20 mg/kg in SD rats and in the next safety analysis in beagle dogs showed that there were no organ-specific adverse effects in higher doses, such as, 12 mg/kg. LHT7 showed sustained effects with minimized adverse events when administered through i.v. infusion. CONCLUSIONS: LHT7 (i.v. infusion) could be safely used for further clinical development as a multi-targeting anti-angiogenic agent.

RESUMO

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of the posterior cervical foraminotomy (PCF) with and without discectomy for the treatment of cervical disk herniation. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although PCF is effective and does not require a fusion procedure, it has certain disadvantages, including a narrow operating field, the need for cervical nerve root retraction, and the obstacle of epidural venous bleeding. Surgeons often find that these limitations complicate the removal of the disk material during PCF. METHODS: The study evaluated 135 consecutive patients who underwent PCF for cervical disk herniation and were followed up for a mean of 36.1 months. Of these patients, 117 were treated with posterior foraminotomy with discectomy (group A); the remaining 18 patients were treated with PCF alone because the disk could not be removed (group B). The clinical data, neurological status, radiologic findings, location of pathology, clinical outcomes, and postoperative satisfaction were compared between the 2 groups. RESULTS: The 2 groups had similar clinical outcomes. The mean visual analogue scale (VAS) score for radicular arm and neck pain improved from 7.8 and 5.7 to 4.6 and 3.6 in group A and from 6.6 and 6.2 to 3.4 and 3.6 in group B, and the mean Oswestry disability index (ODI) score from 39.6 and 38.7 to 23.2 and 17.6 in groups A and B, respectively. The success rates in groups A and B were 90.6% and 88.8%, respectively. Radiologic examination found significant differences in operative-level disk softness and disk type between the groups (P<0.05). Protruding, mixed-type, and C4-5 level were more difficult to remove and required more extensive foraminal unroofing. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the surgical and anatomic limitations, PCF with or without discectomy is an effective treatment for cervical disk herniation.

RESUMO

Pork from Jeju black pig (population J) and Berkshire (population B) has a unique market share in Korea because of their high meat quality. Due to the high demand of this pork, traceability of the pork to its origin is becoming an important part of the consumer demand. To examine the feasibility of such a system, we aim to provide basic genetic information of the two black pig populations and assess the possibility of genetically distinguishing between the two breeds. Muscle samples were collected from slaughter houses in Jeju Island and Namwon, Chonbuk province, Korea, for populations J and B, respectively. In total 800 Jeju black pigs and 351 Berkshires were genotyped at thirteen microsatellite (MS) markers. Analyses on the genetic diversity of the two populations were carried out in the programs MS toolkit and FSTAT. The population structure of the two breeds was determined by a Bayesian clustering method implemented in structure and by a phylogenetic analysis in Phylip. Population J exhibited higher mean number of alleles, expected heterozygosity and observed heterozygosity value, and polymorphism information content, compared to population B. The FIS values of population J and population B were 0.03 and -0.005, respectively, indicating that little or no inbreeding has occurred. In addition, genetic structure analysis revealed the possibility of gene flow from population B to population J. The expected probability of identify value of the 13 MS markers was 9.87×10(-14) in population J, 3.17×10(-9) in population B, and 1.03×10(-12) in the two populations. The results of this study are useful in distinguishing between the two black pig breeds and can be used as a foundation for further development of DNA markers.

RESUMO

Clustering is an important means of data mining based on separating data categories by similar features. Unlike the classification algorithm, clustering belongs to the unsupervised type of algorithms. Two representatives of the clustering algorithms are the K-means and the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. Linear regression analysis was extended to the category-type dependent variable, while logistic regression was achieved using a linear combination of independent variables. To predict the possibility of occurrence of an event, a statistical approach is used. However, the classification of all data by means of logistic regression analysis cannot guarantee the accuracy of the results. In this paper, the logistic regression analysis is applied to EM clusters and the K-means clustering method for quality assessment of red wine, and a method is proposed for ensuring the accuracy of the classification results.

RESUMO

The present report describes a rare case of spontaneous tumor of the salivary gland in a male Sprague-Dawley rat. The clinically confirmed mass rapidly developed in the cervical region between 19 and 21 weeks of age, and the animal was subsequently euthanized. At necropsy, a well-circumscribed nodule approximately 7 × 6 cm in diameter was found at the site of the salivary gland. The cut surface of the nodule was lobulated and soft and had a pinkish tan fish-flesh appearance. One large cyst (approximately 3 × 2 cm in size) containing reddish fluid was also present in the nodule. Histopathologically, the tumor, with a partially lobulated structure, was surrounded by a thin fibrous capsule. The majority of tumor cells formed a diffuse solid sheet structure that mainly consisted of small ovoid or spindle-shaped cells. In the tumor periphery, some cells were arranged in nest-like structures. Small duct-like structures lined with a monolayer of cuboidal epithelial cells resembling an intercalated duct or large polygonal clear cells with a myoepithelial component were also observed. Mitotic figures and necrotic foci were frequently observed in solid areas. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin, epithelial membrane antigen, vimentin, p63, α-smooth muscle actin and calponin. The cells were negative for calcitonin, synaptophysin and chromogranin A. On the basis of these findings, the tumor was diagnosed as an epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma originating from the luminal epithelial cells and myoepithelial cells in the submandibular gland.

RESUMO

Barium sulfate and iohexol are commonly used as contrast agents for videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS). This study compared their usefulness as contrast agents in visualizing components of swallowing predictable of subsequent pneumonia and unintentional weight loss after VFSS. This was a randomized, controlled, crossover trial. The two contrast agents were alternately used in the same participants, and the order in which the contrast agent was tested first was randomly assigned. After VFSS, we followed the participants for 3 months and the association between VFSS findings of each contrast agent and the subsequent pneumonia and unintentional weight loss were analyzed. A total of 30 participants were included in the analysis. We recorded 11 cases of subsequent pneumonia and 13 of unintentional weight loss. Regarding the risk of subsequent pneumonia after VFSS, only the oral transit time and number of swallows tested with barium sulfate indicated significant differences between participants with and without subsequent pneumonia. For unintentional weight loss, oral transit time and pharyngeal wall coating after swallowing tested with barium sulfate, as well as oral transit time, nasal penetration, residue in the valleculae, PAS scores, and number of swallows when testing with iohexol demonstrated significant differences between those with and without unintentional weight loss.
