RESUMO

In our current research, sucrose palmitate (SP) was applied as a possible permeation enhancer for buccal use. This route of administration is a novelty as there is no literature on the use of SP in buccal mucoadhesive films. Films containing SP were prepared at different temperatures, with different concentrations of SP and different lengths of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) chains. The mechanical, structural, and in vitro mucoadhesive properties of films containing SP were investigated. Tensile strength and mucoadhesive force were measured with a device and software developed in our Institute. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and X-ray powder diffractometry (XRPD) were applied for the structure analysis of the films. Mucoadhesive work was calculated in two ways: from the measured contact angle and compared with direct mucoadhesive work, which measured mucoadhesive force, which is direct mucoadhesion work. These results correlate linearly with a correlation coefficient of 0.98. It is also novel because it is a new method for the determination of mucoadhesive work.

RESUMO

Aluminum alloy (Al99.5 or AlSi12)-based metal matrix syntactic foams (MMSFs) were produced by pressure infiltration with ~65 vol % Globocer filler (33 wt % Al2O3, 48 wt % SiO2, 19 wt % Al2O3∙SiO2). The infiltrated blocks were machined by different geometry tools in order to produce notched samples. The samples were loaded in three-point bending, and the loading force values were recorded against the cross-head displacements and the crack opening displacements. To measure up the notch sensitivity and toughness of the MMSFs, the fracture energies and the fracture toughness values were determined. The results showed that the mentioned quantities are needed to describe the behavior of MMSFs. The fracture energies were shown to be notch-sensitive, while the fracture toughness values were dependent only on the matrix material and were insensitive to the notch geometry. The complex investigation of the fracture surfaces revealed strong bonding between the hollow spheres and the Al99.5 matrix due to a chemical reaction, while this bonding was found to be weaker in the case of the AlSi12 matrix. This difference resulted in completely different crack propagation modes in the case of the different matrices.

RESUMO

Metal matrix syntactic foams (MMSFs) are becoming increasingly relevant from the lightweight structural materials point of view. They are also used as energy absorbers and as core materials for sandwich structures. The mechanical properties of MMSFs are extensively influenced by the properties of their filler materials which are used to create and ensure the porosity inside the metal matrix. As the properties of fillers are of such importance in the case of MMSFs, in this paper three different filler materials: (i) ceramic hollow spheres (CHSs), (ii) metallic hollow spheres (MHSs) and (iii) lightweight expanded clay particles (LECAPs), have been investigated in numerous aspects. The investigations cover the microstructural features of the fillers and the basic mechanical properties of the fillers and the produced MMSFs as well. The microstructure was studied by optical and electron microscopy extended by energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, while the basic mechanical properties were mapped by standardized compression tests. It was found that in the terms of cost-awareness the LECAPs are the best fillers, because they are ~100 times cheaper than the CHSs or MHSs, but their mechanical properties can be compared to the aforementioned, relatively expensive filler materials and still exceed the properties of the most 'conventional' metallic foams.

RESUMO

Iron hollow sphere filled aluminum matrix syntactic foams (AMSFs) were produced by low pressure, inert gas assisted infiltration. The microstructure of the produced AMSFs was investigated by light and electron microscopy, extended by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron back-scattered diffraction. The investigations revealed almost perfect infiltration and a slight gradient in the grain size of the matrix. A very thin interface layer that ensures good bonding between the hollow spheres and the matrix was also observed. Compression tests were performed on cylindrical specimens to explore the characteristic mechanical properties of the AMSFs. Compared to other (conventional) metallic foams, the investigated AMSFs proved to have outstanding mechanical properties (yield strength, plateau strength, etc.) and energy absorbing capability.

RESUMO

At present the main cause of death originates from cardiovascular diseases. Primarily the most frequent cause is vessel closing thus resulting in tissue damage. The stent can help to avoid this. It expands the narrowed vessel section and allows free blood flow. The good surface quality of stents is important. It also must have adequate mechanical characteristics or else it can be damaged which can easily lead to the fracture of the implant. Thus, we have to consider the importance of the surface treatment of these implants. In our experiments the appropriate design was cut from a 1.041 mm inner diameter and 0.100 mm wall thickness nitinol tube by using Nd:YAG laser device. Then, the stent was subjected to chemical etching. By doing so, the burr created during the laser cutting process can be removed and the surface quality refined. In our research, we changed the time of chemical etching and monitored the effects of this parameter. The differently etched stents were subjected to microscopic analysis, mass measurement and in vivo environment tests. The etching times that gave suitable surface and mechanical features were identified.
