RESUMO

Pandemics are enormous threats to the world that impact all aspects of our lives, especially the global economy. The COVID-19 pandemic has emerged since December 2019 and has affected the global economy in many ways. As the world becomes more interconnected, the economic impacts of the pandemic become more serious. In addition to increased health expenditures and reduced labor force, the pandemic has hit the supply and demand chain massively and caused trouble for manufacturers who have to fire some of their employees or delay their economic activities to prevent more loss. With the closure of manufacturers and companies and reduced travel rates, usage of oil after the beginning of the pandemic has decreased significantly that was unprecedented in the last 30 years. The mining industry is a critical sector in several developing countries, and the COVID-19 pandemic has hit this industry too. Also, world stock markets declined as investors started to become concerned about the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The tourism industry and airlines have also experienced an enormous loss too. The GDP has reduced, and this pandemic will cost the world more than 2 trillion at the end of 2020.

RESUMO

By driving the ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), coronaviruses have become a significant change in twenty-first-century medicine, healthcare systems, education, and the global economy. This chapter rapidly reviews the origin, immunopathogenesis, epidemiology, diagnosis, clinical manifestations, and potential therapeutics of COVID-19. It would also explore the effects of the introduction of a single virus, the so-called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), on the public health preparedness planning.

Modified walnut wooden shell (MWWS) and almond wooden shell (MAWS) as novel anion exchangers were used to remove phosphorus (P) from aqueous solution. The raw and modified agricultural wastes were characterized using total N, total P, FT-IR spectra, SEM, BET, and EXD analysis. The effect of different parameters such as pH (4 to 8), contact time (5 to 600 min), and adsorbent dosage (1 to 8 g L-1) on P adsorption was investigated. Adsorption of P onto MWWS and MAWS was studied using the batch technique with different concentration of P (5 to 200 mg L-1) at 25 ± 2 °C. The P adsorption isotherms were fitted with the Freundlich and Langmuir equations. The k and n values were 1.57 mg g-1 and 1.88 for MWWS and 1.91 mg g-1 and 2.24 for MAWS, respectively. The maximum P adsorption capacities for MWWS and MAWS were 22.73 and 14.71 mg g-1, respectively. The desorption-regeneration experimental results indicated about 4% and 3% reductions in MWWS and MAWS P adsorption efficiency after four consecutive regeneration cycles, respectively. The data well fitted with Pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 ≥ 0.99), indicating that chemical interactions dominate the P adsorption process. Incubation studies showed the rate of P release in treated soil with P-loaded modified biosorbents was higher than control. Therefore, the MWWS and MAWS can potentially be used as an excellent adsorbent in remediation of contaminated waters by P and then recycled to soil.

BACKGROUND: The current guideline recommends using an intravenous tissue-type plasminogen activator (IV tPA) prior to mechanical thrombectomy (MT) in eligible acute ischemic stroke (AIS) with emergent large vessel occlusion (ELVO). Some recent studies found no significant differences in the long-term functional outcomes between bridging therapy (BT, i.e., IV tPA prior to MT) and direct MT (dMT). METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the safety and functional outcomes between BT and dMT in AIS patients with ELVO who were eligible for IV tPA administration. Based on the ELVO location, patients were categorized as the anterior group (occlusion of the anterior circulation), or the combined group (occlusion of the anterior and/or posterior circulation). A subgroup analysis was performed based on the study type, i.e., RCT and non-RCT. RESULTS: Thirteen studies (3985 patients) matched the eligibility criteria. Comparing the BT and dMT groups, no significant differences in terms of mortality and good functional outcome were observed at 90 days. Symptomatic intracranial hemorrhagic (sICH) events were more frequent in BT patients in the combined group (OR = 0.73, p = 0.02); this result remained significant only in the non-RCT subgroup (OR = 0.67, p = 0.03). The RCT subgroup had a significantly higher rate of successful revascularization in BT patients (OR = 0.73, p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis uncovered no significant differences in functional outcome and mortality rate at 90 days between dMT and BT in patients with AIS who had ELVO. Although BT performed better in terms of successful recanalization rate, there is a risk of increased sICH rate in this group.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is gaining traction in neuroscience research as a tool for evaluating neural fibers. The technique can be used to assess white matter (WM) microstructure in neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson disease (PD). There is evidence that the uncinate fasciculus and the cingulum bundle are involved in the pathogenesis of PD. These fasciculus and bundle alterations correlate with the symptoms and stages of PD. PRISMA 2022 was used to search PubMed and Scopus for relevant articles. Our search revealed 759 articles. Following screening of titles and abstracts, a full-text review, and implementing the inclusion criteria, 62 papers were selected for synthesis. According to the review of selected studies, WM integrity in the uncinate fasciculus and cingulum bundles can vary according to symptoms and stages of Parkinson disease. This article provides structural insight into the heterogeneous PD subtypes according to their cingulate bundle and uncinate fasciculus changes. It also examines if there is any correlation between these brain structures' structural changes with cognitive impairment or depression scales like Geriatric Depression Scale-Short (GDS). The results showed significantly lower fractional anisotropy values in the cingulum bundle compared to healthy controls as well as significant correlations between FA and GDS scores for both left and right uncinate fasciculus regions suggesting that structural damage from disease progression may be linked to cognitive impairments seen in advanced PD patients. This review help in developing more targeted treatments for different types of Parkinson's disease, as well as providing a better understanding of how cognitive impairments may be related to these structural changes. Additionally, using DTI scans can provide clinicians with valuable information about white matter tracts which is useful for diagnosing and monitoring disease progression over time.

INTRODUCTION: One of the rare but potentially serious side effects of COVID-19 vaccination is arterial and venous thrombosis. Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) cases have been reported post COVID-19 vaccination. Herein, we systematically reviewed the reported cases of AIS after COVID-19 vaccination. METHOD: This systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline. We searched PubMed and Scopus until April 14, 2022 to find studies that reported AIS post COVID-19 vaccination. RESULTS: We found 447 articles. From those, 140 duplicates were removed. After screening and excluding irrelevant articles, 29 studies (43 patients) were identified to be included. From all cases, 22 patients (51.1%) were diagnosed with AIS associated with Vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT). Among AIS associated with VITT group, all received viral vector vaccines except one. The majority of cases with AIS and VITT were female (17 cases, 77.2%) and aged below 60 years (15 cases, 68%). Fourteen patients (32.5%) had additional thrombosis in other sites. Four of them (0.09%) showed concurrent CVST and ischemic stroke. Hemorrhagic transformation following AIS occurred in 7 patients (16.27%). Among 43 patients with AIS, at least 6 patients (14%) died during hospital admission. CONCLUSION: AIS has been reported as a rare complication within 4 weeks post COVID-19 vaccination, particularly with viral vector vaccines. Health care providers should be familiar with this rare consequence of COVID-19 vaccination in particular in the context of VITT to make a timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.

RESUMO

Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the therapeutic and management options to reduce the burden of the COVID-19 disease are under investigation. IVIG therapy is used as an effective treatment for immunodeficient patients and patients with inflammatory or autoimmune conditions. The therapeutic effect of IVIG in COVID-19 patients has been investigated. But, the results are controversial and some studies reported no benefit of IVIG therapy. More clinical trials on the effect of IVIG therapy in COVID-19 patients should be performed to establish a certain conclusion about IVIG effectiveness.

This study assessed the effects of salinity and sewage sludge on the fractionation of Zn and Cu in a soil around a lead-zinc mine as well as their uptake by earthworms (Eisenia fetida) in order to identify novel methods for employing the earthworms in waste management techniques. Eisenia fetida specimens were kept under laboratory conditions for 42 days. The first treatment involved the addition of 0%, 2%, 4%, and 8% (w/w) sewage sludge to contaminated soil. In the second treatment, NaCl was added to the soil at concentrations of 0, 1170, 2340, 3510, and 4680 mg L-1. The results indicated that the combined application of high salinity and sewage sludge had adverse effects on the survival of the earthworms. The presence of the earthworms increased the amount of Zn and Cu bound to organic matter. The organic fraction of Zn and Cu also significantly aggregated with increasing salinity levels. The interaction of salinity and earthworm showed that the residual Cu fraction increased with the presence of earthworm and decreased with increasing salinity. The residual fraction of Cu was significantly affected by the interactions of salinity and sewage sludge, where the highest amount was seen in the EC0 (distilled water) × SS8 (8% sewage sludge) treatment. The Zn and Cu contents increased with the earthworms when exposed to higher levels of salinity and sewage sludge.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported an association between elevated liver enzymes and increased risks for developing inflammatory diseases. The aim of our study was to examine how serum liver transaminases, as inexpensive and routinely measured markers, and the De Ritis ratio are associated with the presence of coronary artery ectasia (CAE) and its severity. METHODS: Participants were recruited from patients admitted to Tehran Heart Center for diagnostic coronary angiography due to suspected myocardial ischaemia. These participants also underwent concurrent laboratory routine biochemical and liver enzyme tests. RESULTS: A total of 104 participants were included; 59 had CAE and 45 were controls without coronary artery disease (CAD). The CAE group was split into a further two subgroups: those with isolated CAE (n=27) and those with CAD and coexisting CAE (n=32). In the adjusted multivariate analysis, a lower ratio of aspartate aminotransferase to ALT (AST/ALT) was, uniquely among the variables, a statistically significant marker for isolated CAE. In the CAD + CAE group, the AST/ALT ratio was not significant after adjustments for the confounding factors. The multivariate linear regression for the Markis score showed that the AST/ALT ratio was inversely associated with the severity of CAE. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the AST/ALT ratio and, to some extent, ALT independently of other inflammatory factors, can be associated with the presence and severity of isolated CAE.
