RESUMO

The Olympic and Paralympic Games are a sporting event that welcomes more than ten thousand top-level athletes. These athletes require daily care before and after training and competition, but are also prone to serious injuries. The polyclinic, set up in the athletes' village, will provide a wide range of high-quality care for the various delegations. Urgent care will be provided by the hospitals of the Assistance publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, which are responsible for the administration of the polyclinic.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence and characteristics of injuries in elite badminton players over a competitive season. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: The French National Institute of Sport, Expertise, and Performance (INSEP). PARTICIPANTS: Twenty international elite badminton players. INDEPENDENT VARIABLES: The type, the location, the occurrence of the injury (match or training), the footwork type, the type of shot, and the perceived fatigue were collected. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Injury incidence rates were calculated per 1000 hours of play (Hop). RESULTS: Thirty-five injuries were collected over 10 210 hours of player exposure with an overall incidence rate of 3.4 injuries per 1000 Hop, with higher incidence during matches than training (11.6 vs 2.08; P < 0.05). Lower-limb injuries (LLI) were the most frequent (54.3%) especially on the foot (22.9%), and upper-limb injury rate (37.1%) was higher compared with previous studies. The most common type was musculotendinous injuries (51.4%). The smash and the lunge were the most frequent causes of upper-limb injury and LLI, respectively. Injuries occurred mostly during the first third of play (46.2%). CONCLUSIONS: This is the first prospective study to investigate badminton injuries among international badminton players. Further studies are needed to confirm our results on larger samples.

RESUMO

COVID-19 vaccination raised concerns about its potential effects on physical performance. To assess the impact of COVID-19 vaccination on the perceived change in physical performance, we conducted an online survey among elite athletes from Belgium, Canada, France and Luxembourg, with questions about socio-demographics, COVID-19 vaccination, perceived impact on physical performance and perceived pressure to get vaccinated. Full vaccination was defined as two doses of mRNA or vector vaccine or a heterologous vaccine scheme. Among 1106 eligible athletes contacted, 306 athletes answered the survey and were included in this study. Of these, 72% perceived no change in their physical performance, 4% an improvement and 24% a negative impact following full COVID-19 vaccination. For 82% of the included athletes, the duration of the negative vaccine reactions was ≤3 days. After adjustment for potential confounding variables, practicing an individual sport, a duration of vaccine reactions longer than 3 days, a high level of vaccine reaction and the perceived pressure to get vaccinated were independently associated with a perceived negative impact on physical performance of more than 3 days after the vaccination. The perceived pressure to get vaccinated appears to be a parameter associated with the negative perceived change in the physical performance and deserves further consideration.

RESUMO

Prevention of osteo-articular lesions in amateur and leisure sports. Physical exercise and sport are now recognized by the World Health Organisation and the ministry of Health as non-drug therapy/treatment for many pathologies. Its use implies an increase in the number of sportsmen and therefore, statistically, an increase in the risk of osteoarticular lesions. Before starting, it is advisable to carry out a check-up to determine non-contraindication, as well as particularities and patient's preference for one or more sports. To avoid injuries and allow the regularity necessary for an efficient treatment, preventive measures must be taken. Major preventive measures consist in choosing one or several sports practiced in a safe environment and in well-qualified instructors to teach correct technique, advise on the right equipment, manage the intensity and frequency of each session to allow progression, and give precautions to be followed regarding weather and pollution conditions. Others preventive measures are those of competitive sports: warming-up, stretching, active recovery, sleep, hydration and nutrition also apply to every athlete no matter his or her level. Certain preventive measures are specific according to morphology or traumatic pathologies, such as orthosis, and others to age, young and old, or the level of the athlete.
