INTRODUCTION: The consumption of gluten-free foods has continued to increase in recent years. Given their higher intake among individuals both with and without a medically diagnosed gluten allergy or sensitivity, it is important to understand how the nutritional quality of these foods compares against non-gluten-free foods. As such, we aimed to compare the nutritional quality of gluten-free and non-gluten-free pre-packaged foods sold in Hong Kong. METHODS: Data from 18,292 pre-packaged food and beverage items in the 2019 FoodSwitch Hong Kong database were used. These products were categorized as (1) "declared gluten-free"; (2) "gluten-free by ingredient or naturally gluten-free"; and (3) "non-gluten-free" according to information presented on the package. One-way ANOVA was used to compare the differences in the Australian Health Star Rating (HSR), energy, protein, fibre, total fat, saturated fat, trans-fat, carbohydrates, sugars, and sodium content between products in different gluten categories, overall and by major food category (e.g., bread and bakery products) and region of origin (e.g., America, Europe). RESULTS: Products declared gluten-free (mean ± SD: 2.9 ± 1.3; n = 7%) had statistically significantly higher HSR than those gluten-free by ingredient or naturally gluten-free (2.7 ± 1.4; n = 51.9%) and non-gluten-free (2.2 ± 1.4; n = 41.2%) (all pairwise comparisons p < 0.001). Overall, non-gluten-free products have higher energy, protein, saturated fat, trans-fat, free sugar and sodium, and less fibre compared with products in the other two gluten categories. Similar differences were observed across major food groups and by region of origin. CONCLUSIONS: Non-gluten-free products sold in Hong Kong were generally less healthy than gluten-free products (regardless of the presence of gluten-free declaration). Consumers should be better educated on how to identify gluten-free foods, given that many gluten-free foods do not declare this information on the label.

BACKGROUND: Dietary guidelines recommend limiting the intake of added sugars. However, despite the public health importance, most countries have not mandated the labeling of added-sugar content on packaged foods and beverages, making it difficult for consumers to avoid products with added sugar, and limiting the ability of policymakers to identify priority products for intervention. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to develop a machine learning approach for the prediction of added-sugar content in packaged products using available nutrient, ingredient, and food category information. METHODS: The added-sugar prediction algorithm was developed using k-nearest neighbors (KNN) and packaged food information from the US Label Insight dataset (n = 70,522). A synthetic dataset of Australian packaged products (n = 500) was used to assess validity and generalization. Performance metrics included the coefficient of determination (R2), mean absolute error (MAE), and Spearman rank correlation (ρ). To benchmark the KNN approach, the KNN approach was compared with an existing added-sugar prediction approach that relies on a series of manual steps. RESULTS: Compared with the existing added-sugar prediction approach, the KNN approach was similarly apt at explaining variation in added-sugar content (R2 = 0.96 vs. 0.97, respectively) and ranking products from highest to lowest in added-sugar content (ρ = 0.91 vs. 0.93, respectively), while less apt at minimizing absolute deviations between predicted and true values (MAE = 1.68 g vs. 1.26 g per 100 g or 100 mL, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: KNN can be used to predict added-sugar content in packaged products with a high degree of validity. Being automated, KNN can easily be applied to large datasets. Such predicted added-sugar levels can be used to monitor the food supply and inform interventions aimed at reducing added-sugar intake.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. Studies using the a priori dietary pattern approach have been criticized for the heterogeneity of their scoring methods. This review aimed to evaluate the evidence on the association between a priori dietary patterns and CVD incidence in recent adult population-based studies. Similar to the conclusions of previous systematic reviews and meta-analyses, our review found that the majority of recent studies suggested that Mediterranean diet (6 out of 10 studies), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet (4 out of 6 studies), Dietary Guidelines-based (11 out of 13 studies) patterns, and other emerging dietary patterns, including carbohydrate quality, Dietary Inflammatory Index, Plant-based Diet Index and Healthy Nordic Food Index, were cardioprotective in the general population; however, there was substantial heterogeneity among the studies, possibly due to differences in scoring methods and analytical approaches used and inclusion of different confounders, as well as other methodological drawbacks, such as low numbers of cases and short follow-up periods. Future studies should simultaneously examine and compare multiple a priori dietary patterns in a specific population using a uniform statistical approach. A consensus on the scoring methods for each a priori dietary pattern is also necessary.

BACKGROUND: Consumption of ultra-processed foods is associated with increased risk of obesity and non-communicable diseases. Little is known about current patterns of ultra-processed foods intake in Australia. The aim of this study was to examine the amount and type of ultra-processed foods purchased by Australian households in 2019 and determine whether purchases differed by socio-economic status (SES). We also assessed whether purchases of ultra-processed foods changed between 2015 and 2019.  METHODS: We used grocery purchase data from a nationally representative consumer panel in Australia to assess packaged and unpackaged grocery purchases that were brought home between 2015 to 2019. Ultra-processed foods were identified according to the NOVA system, which classifies foods according to the nature, extent and purpose of industrial food processing. Purchases of ultra-processed foods were calculated per capita, using two outcomes: grams/day and percent of total energy. The top food categories contributing to purchases of ultra-processed foods in 2019 were identified, and differences in ultra-processed food purchases by SES (Index of Relative Social Advantage and Disadvantage) were assessed using survey-weighted linear regression. Changes in purchases of ultra-processed foods between 2015 to 2019 were examined overall and by SES using mixed linear models. RESULTS: In 2019, the mean ± SD total grocery purchases made by Australian households was 881.1 ± 511.9 g/d per capita. Of this, 424.2 ± 319.0 g/d per capita was attributable to purchases of ultra-processed foods, which represented 56.4% of total energy purchased. The largest food categories contributing to total energy purchased included mass-produced, packaged breads (8.2% of total energy purchased), chocolate and sweets (5.7%), biscuits and crackers (5.7%) and ice-cream and edible ices (4.3%). In 2019, purchases of ultra-processed foods were significantly higher for the lowest SES households compared to all other SES quintiles (P < 0.001). There were no major changes in purchases of ultra-processed foods overall or by SES over the five-year period. CONCLUSIONS: Between 2015 and 2019, ultra-processed foods have consistently made up the majority of groceries purchased by Australians, particularly for the lowest SES households. Policies that reduce ultra-processed food consumption may reduce diet-related health inequalities.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the labelling status of trans-fat of pre-packaged foods sold in Hong Kong. DESIGN: Data from 19 027 items in the 2019 FoodSwitch Hong Kong database were used. Ingredient lists were screened to identify specific (e.g. partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, PHVO) and non-specific trans-fat ingredient indicators (e.g. hydrogenated oil). Trans-fat content was obtained from the on-pack nutrition labels, which was converted into proportion of total fat (%total fat). Descriptive statistics were calculated for trans-fat content and the number of specific, non-specific and total trans-fat ingredients indicators found on the ingredients lists. Comparisons were made between regions using one-way ANOVA and χ2 for continuous and categorical variables, respectively. SETTING: Cross-sectional audit. PARTICIPANTS: Not applicable. RESULTS: A total of 729 items (3·8 % of all products) reported to contain industrially produced trans-fat, with a median of 0·4 g/100 g or 100 ml (interquartile range (IQR): 0·1-0·6) and 1·2 %totalfat (IQR: 0·6-2·9). 'Bread and bakery products' had the highest proportion of items with industrially produced trans-fat (18·9 %). 'Non-alcoholic beverages' had the highest proportion of products of 'false negatives' labelling (e.g. labelled as 0 trans-fat but contains PHVO; 59·3 %). The majority of products with trans-fat indicator originated from Asia (70 %). CONCLUSIONS: According to the labelling ∼4 % of pre-packaged food and beverages sold in Hong Kong in 2019 contained industrially produced trans-fat, and a third of these had trans-fat >2 %total fat. The ambiguous trans-fat labelling in Hong Kong may not effectively assist consumers in identifying products free from industrially produced trans-fat.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the accuracy of a flash glucose monitoring system (FGMS) in a postprandial setting. METHODS: Ten fasted adults without diabetes wore the FGMS sensors then consumed a standard breakfast. Their glucose levels were subsequently recorded for 2 hours, both by the FGMS and by measuring capillary glucose levels using the glucose oxidase method. The accuracy of the FGMS data was assessed using the accuracy limits stated in ISO 15197:2013. RESULTS: FGMS measurements were mostly lower than glucose oxidase measurements (mean absolute relative difference ± SD: 25.4 ± 17.0%, p < 0.001). However, the maximum difference from baseline captured by the two methods was not significantly different (mean ± SD, glucose oxidase: 58.5 ± 18.9 mg/dl; FGMS, 54.4 ± 28.9 mg/dl, p = 0.366). CONCLUSIONS: FGMS could track the incremental glycaemic excursions after meals in adults without diabetes, yet further studies with greater sample sizes are needed to confirm this finding.

BACKGROUND: Countries around the world are putting in place sugar reformulation targets for packaged foods to reduce excess sugar consumption. The Australian government released its voluntary sugar reformulation targets for nine food categories in 2020. We estimated the potential impact of these targets on household sugar purchases and examined differences by income. For comparison, we also modelled the potential impact of the UK sugar reduction targets on per capita sugar purchases as the UK has one of the most comprehensive sugar reduction strategies in the world. METHODS: Grocery purchase data from a nationally representative consumer panel (n=7,188) in Australia was linked with a large database (FoodSwitch) with product-specific sugar content information for packaged foods (n=25,261); both datasets were collected in 2018. Potential reductions in per capita sugar purchases were calculated overall and by food category. Differences in sugar reduction across income level were assessed by analysis of variance. RESULTS: In 2018, the total sugar acquired from packaged food and beverage purchases consumed at-home was 56.1 g/day per capita. Australia's voluntary reformulation targets for sugar covered 2,471/25,261 (9.8%) unique products in the FoodSwitch dataset. Under the scenario that all food companies adhered to the voluntary targets, sugar purchases were estimated to be reduced by 0.9 g/day per capita, which represents a 1.5% reduction in sugar purchased from packaged foods. However, if Australia adopted the UK targets, over twice as many products would be covered (n=4,667), and this would result in a more than four times greater reduction in sugar purchases (4.1 g/day per capita). It was also estimated that if all food companies complied with Australia's voluntary sugar targets, reductions to sugar would be slightly greater in low-income households compared with high-income households by 0.3 g/day (95%CI 0.2 - 0.4 g/day, p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Sugar-reduction policies have the potential to substantially reduce population sugar consumption and may help to reduce health inequalities related to excess sugar consumption. However, the current reformulation targets in Australia are estimated to achieve only a small reduction to sugar intakes, particularly in comparison to the UK's sugar reduction program.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the potential effect on Fe intake of 7-8 months old infants if pre-packaged baby foods (PBF) were used as the sole source of complementary foods. DESIGN: Based on the 7-d recommended feeding plan for 7-8 months old infants in Hong Kong (moderate Fe-fortified rice cereal with home-cooked meals), twenty-four modelling scenarios were created which comprised of two milk use modes (breastmilk v. infant formula), three modes of rice cereal use (no-rice cereal; non-Fe-fortified rice cereal and Fe-fortified rice cereal) and four baby foods usage modes (home-cooked meals; low-Fe PBF only; high-Fe PBF only and mixed PBF). The PBF were randomly selected in each of the models and substituted the original meals/snacks. The average daily Fe intakes of the modelled meal plans were compared with the Chinese estimated average requirement (EAR) and recommended nutrient intake (RNI) for Fe. SETTING: Modelling study. PARTICIPANTS: Not applicable. RESULTS: In general, the infant-formula-based complementary feeding pattern (CFP) had higher average daily Fe intake when compared with breastmilk-based CFP. The Fe intakes of all scenarios under the breastmilk-based CFP were below the RNI and EAR, except for the fortified rice cereal meal plans with high-Fe or mixed PBF. For infant-formula-based CFP, the Fe intakes were close to or above the RNI regardless of types of PBF or rice cereal used. CONCLUSIONS: The inclusion of fortified rice cereal was important in maintaining adequate Fe intake for infants, especially for breast-fed infants. The replacement of home-cooked meals by low-Fe PBF could potentially put infants at risk of Fe deficiency.

AIM: To compare the effect of a low glycaemic index (LGI) diet on reducing day-long glycaemia with a macronutrient-matched high glycaemic index (HGI) diet, using customized meal delivery to ensure compliance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a single-blinded, randomized crossover trial in 14 healthy adults (57% female) with a mean ± SD age of 21.6 ± 1.7 years. A flash glucose monitoring sensor was installed on the subjects on day 1 to capture the interstitial glucose level every 15 minutes for 14 days. Subjects were randomized to receive an LGI (dietary GI = 40) or HGI (dietary GI = 60) diet (three meals and two snacks) from day 2 for 5 consecutive days, followed by a 2-day washout, then switched to the alternative diet for another 5 days. A paired t-test was used to test the differences in the incremental area under the curve (iAUC) of glucose, postprandial glucose (PPG) concentration and maximum postprandial glucose rise (MPGR) between the LGI and HGI periods. RESULTS: Subjects had lower iAUC for average day-long glycaemia during the LGI intervention period compared with the HGI period (mean ± SD, 865 ± 297 vs. 1024 ± 267 mmol x min/L; P = .047). PPG for breakfast and snack 2, and MPGR for breakfast, snack 2 and dinner, were lower in the LGI period. CONCLUSIONS: In young healthy adults, following an LGI diet resulted in lower average day-long glycaemia compared with a macronutrient-matched HGI diet. Our results support the use of LGI diets to reduce the risk of developing glucose intolerance.

PURPOSE: This study examined the association of free sugar (FS) intake with obesity measures and blood pressure (BP) among a nationally representative sample of Australian adults. METHODS: Data from adults (weighted n = 5136) who completed 2 × 24-h recalls and had complete data for BP, waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and body mass index (BMI) were analyzed. Associations between percentage energy of FS from all food sources (%EFStotal), beverages only (%EFSbeverages), and non-beverages sources only (%EFSnon-beverages) and obesity measures and BP were examined using linear and non-linear regressions. Logistic regression was used to calculate the odds ratios (OR) of being classified as overweight and/or obese, having increased cardiometabolic risks, and elevated BP per 5% point increase in %EFStotal, %EFSbeverages, and %EFSnon-beverages. All regression analyses were adjusted for known socio-economic and lifestyle confounders. RESULTS: %EFSbeverage was positively associated with BMI, WC, and WHtR (all p < 0.05), while %EFSnon-beverage was inversely associated with these outcomes. Increases in odds of having an undesirable WC/WHtR were found with increasing %EFSbeverages (OR per 5% point increase in %EFSbeverages: 1.19 for WC; 1.23 for WHtR, both p < 0.001). %EFStotal and %EFSnon-beverages were weakly and negatively associated with diastolic BP. A 5% point increase in %EFStotal and %EFSnon-beverage was associated with a 10-25% reduction in odds of having elevated BP. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggested that only a higher FS intake from beverages may be associated with obesity, and higher FS intake was associated with reduced odds of having elevated BP.

PURPOSE: Previous studies in older Australians have reported higher alcohol intake in those with low added sugar intake, yet the relationship between energy in liquid form [alcoholic beverages vs. sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB)] and measures of obesity has not been evaluated. We aimed to assess the association between the energy derived from SSB and alcoholic beverages, and to model the association between the substitution of SSB with alcoholic beverages and waist circumference. METHODS: In this cross-sectional analysis, dietary data from the Australian Health Survey 2011-12 were analyzed. Participants with implausible dietary intake were excluded by applying the Goldberg cut-off. Usual SSB intake of adults ≥ 19 years old was estimated using the Multiple Source Method and participants were classified into zero-, low- or high-SSB consumers according to their usual SSB intake. Energy from alcoholic beverages in the three SSB consumption groups was compared using multivariable general linear models. A substitution model was used to assess the association between the replacement of SSB with alcoholic beverages and waist circumference. RESULTS: Zero-SSB consumers made up 33% of the included participants. In all age groups, zero-SSB consumers had significantly higher energy intakes from alcoholic beverages than low- and high-SSB consumers. Low- and high-SSB consumers had similar consumption of alcoholic beverages. Substituting SSB intake with alcoholic beverage intake was not associated with significant differences in waist circumference in most age groups. CONCLUSIONS: Australian adults who avoid SSB are common but consume substantially more energy in the form of alcoholic beverages. An increase in alcoholic beverage intake could be an 'unintended consequence' of strictly discouraging SSB consumption.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Great discrepancies exist in results from studies examining the association between dietary patterns and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in different populations. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the Australian Dietary Guidelines (ADG) 2013, Mediterranean-DASH diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND), Paleolithic and Okinawan dietary patterns and CVD respectively. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this cross-sectional secondary analysis of the 2011-12 Australian Health Survey, adults who self-reported physician-diagnosed CVD, completed two multiple-pass 24 h recalls and had no missing data on all confounders were analysed (weighted n = 5376; 295 CVD cases). Dietary intake was transformed to represent usual intake by the multiple source method. The score of Healthy Eating Index for Australian Adults (HEIFA-2013) was adopted for ADG 2013, while the scores of MIND, Paleolithic and Okinawan dietary patterns were constructed by separating the intake of each predefined food and nutrient into quintiles. The associations between the dietary patterns (as tertiles of scores) and CVD were examined using binary logistic regression adjusted for significant cardiovascular risk factors. Higher adherence to the Okinawan diet pattern was significantly associated with a reduced prevalence of ischemic heart disease (IHD) (OR per unit increase in dietary pattern score: 0.94, 95%CI: 0.90-0.98). Comparing its extreme tertiles, the OR was 0.49 (95%CI: 0.29-0.82; ptrend < 0.01). The associations between HEIFA-2013, MIND and Paleolithic diet patterns and CVD were insignificant. CONCLUSION: The findings suggested an inverse association between adherence to Okinawan dietary pattern and prevalence of IHD in Australian adults.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the extent and characteristics of food and beverage (F&B) promotion in Hong Kong mass transit railway (MTR) stations in districts with different socioeconomic statuses (SES) and school density. DESIGN: All advertisements located in the eight selected MTR stations were recorded by photographs or videos, and classified into F&B and non-F&B. The percentage of F&B advertisements and unhealthy F&B being promoted, and common persuasive marketing strategies used in F&B advertisements were compared between low v. high SES districts and school zones v. non-school zones. SETTING: MTR stations in Hong Kong. PARTICIPANTS: Not applicable. RESULTS: Of the 8064 advertisements documented, 861 (10·7 %) were F&B advertisements, promoting 1860 F&B items. More than half of the these were unhealthy foods. Stations in high SES districts or school zones tend to advertise more unhealthy items (high v. low SES: 55·8 v. 50·8 %, P = 0·049; school v. non-school: 60·8 v. 49·3 %, P < 0·001). More than one-third of the F&B advertisements recorded did not utilise any of those persuasive marketing techniques that were examined, and using models (13·9 %) or providing discounts (8·8 %) were the two most frequently used non-festival-related persuasive marketing strategies. CONCLUSIONS: Unhealthy F&B advertising in MTR stations is prevalent regardless of SES and school density, and persuasive marketing strategies were infrequently used. These suggest that a ban on unhealthy F&B advertising around schools or the use of persuasive marketing strategies alone would be ineffective in Hong Kong. To align with the recommendation from WHO, a universal ban of junk food advertising should be enacted.

OBJECTIVE: To study the extent and nature of free-to-air television advertisements for non-core products (e.g., fast food or soda) directed at children in Hong Kong. DESIGN: Television programs from two major Hong Kong free-to-air television channels airing between 06.00 and 24.00 hours from October 2018 to January 2019 were recorded. Eight nonconsecutive days (four weekdays and four weekend days) were selected for analysis. Pearson's χ2 tests were conducted to compare the pattern of food advertisements by program categories, days of the week, television viewing periods and persuasive marketing techniques. SETTING: Free-to-air television programs. PARTICIPANTS: Not applicable. RESULTS: Of the 10 348 commercials identified, 18·4 % were for foods, and 35·2 % of these were for non-core items. Baby and toddler milk formula (19·5 %) were the most advertised food products, while the most frequently advertised non-core food was fast foods (12·3 %). There was a higher non-core to core product ratio during prime time than the children's time slot (7 v. 1·7). Non-sports celebrity endorsement (27·1 %) was the most frequently used persuasive marketing technique overall, while that for non-core products was sensory characteristics (38·2 %). Most food product placements recorded were non-core products, mentions of local and fast food restaurants and recipe additions. CONCLUSIONS: Non-core products were highly advertised in Hong Kong, while core product advertising was infrequent. Regulations on junk food advertising in Hong Kong should focus on prime time, as well as on food product placement, to reduce children's exposure to persuasive junk food marketing.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the Na concentration of pre-packaged foods available in Hong Kong. DESIGN: The Na concentrations (mg/100 g or mg/100 ml or per serving) of all pre-packaged foods available for sale in major supermarket chains in Hong Kong were obtained from the 2017 Hong Kong FoodSwitch database. Median and interquartile range (IQR) of Na concentration for different food groups and the proportion of foods and beverages considered low and high Na (<120 mg/100 g or mg/100 ml and >600 mg/100 g or mg/100 ml, respectively) were determined. SETTING: Hong Kong. PARTICIPANTS: Not applicable. RESULTS: We analysed 11 518 pre-packaged products. 'Fruit and vegetables (including table salt)' had the highest variability in Na concentration ranging from 0 to 39 000 mg/100 g, followed by 'sauces, dressings, spreads and dips' ranging from 0 to 34 130. The latter also had the highest median Na concentration (mg/100 g or mg/100 ml) at 1180 (IQR 446-3520), followed by meat and meat products (median 800, IQR 632-1068) and snack foods (median 650, IQR 453-926). Fish and fish products (median 531, 364-791) and meat and meat products (median 444, IQR 351-593) had the highest Na concentration per serving. Overall, 46·7 and 26·7 % of products were low and high in Na, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our results can serve as a baseline for food supply interventions in Hong Kong. We have identified several food groups as priority areas for reformulation, demonstrating the potential of such initiatives to improve the healthiness of the food supply in Hong Kong.

PURPOSES: This cross-sectional analysis aimed to investigate the association between free sugar intake and micronutrient intake in Australian children and adolescents and to assess the effectiveness of the cut-off of < 10% energy intake from free sugar (%EFS) as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). METHODS: Dietary data of children and adolescents from the Australian Health Survey 2011-12 were analyzed (n = 1466). Free sugar intake was estimated using a published methodology with modification to suit the definition of free sugar. Six cut-offs for %EFS were created in 5% increments. Participants' mean intakes of 18 micronutrients, as well as their intakes of core (healthy) and discretionary (unhealthy) foods, at different cut-offs were compared using ANCOVA, with age, sex, and socioeconomic status measures as covariates. The odds ratios of not meeting the nutrient reference values (NRVs) for Australia and New Zealand of each micronutrient were calculated using logistic regression. RESULTS: Micronutrient intake decreased with increasing %EFS and the peak intakes of most micronutrients appeared between 0-15%EFS. The absolute intakes of most micronutrients were not significantly different between participants who consumed < 10%EFS and ≥ 10%EFS. Those with > 20%EFS were less likely to meet the NRVs of more than half of the micronutrients. Additionally, as %EFS increased, intakes of core food groups decreased, while intakes of discretionary food groups increased. CONCLUSIONS: The dilution effect in micronutrient intake with increasing free sugar intake was evident in Australian children and adolescents. However, meeting the WHO cut-off was associated with limited improvement in micronutrient adequacy.

PURPOSE: To examine the eating occasion (EO) where most added sugars (AS) were consumed using a nationally representative dataset. METHODS: Plausible dietary data from the Australian Health Survey respondents (n = 8202), collected by a multiple-pass 24-h recall, were analyzed. EO was self-reported during the recall. AS content of the foods reported was estimated using a previously published method. Proportion of daily AS consumed (%ASdaily) and the main food sources, at each EO, were calculated. Differences between children/adolescents and adults were tested by one-way ANOVA. Further stratification by age group and sex was performed. RESULTS: The majority of the %ASdaily came from non-main meal occasions (NMMOs; 48.3 %, 95 % CI 47.5-49.0 %), followed by breakfast/brunch (20.6 %, 95 % CI 20.1-21.1 %). Children and adolescents consumed more %ASdaily during NMMOs compared with adults (52 vs. 47 %; p < 0.001), while girls/women consumed more %ASdaily during NMMO compared with boys (54 vs. 49 %; p = 0.002) and men (50 vs. 45 %; p < 0.001). Sugar-sweetened beverages were the top contributors to AS at lunch, dinner and NMMOs, while sugar and sweet spreads were the top contributor at breakfast/brunch. Other top contributors at NMMOs included "other foods," ice cream and cakes and biscuits, pastries and batter-based products. CONCLUSION: Australians consumed nearly half of %ASdaily during NMMOs, most of which came from high-sugar energy-dense nutrient-poor foods. While the common perception that most AS come from snacks holds true, our results suggest that main meals are also important intervention targets.

PURPOSE: Habitual consumers of different coffee types may vary in socioeconomic status (SES), which is an important determinant of diet quality. Nonetheless, research on diet quality among coffee consumers was scarce. We aimed to compare the diet quality of coffee consumers with different preferences towards coffee type and additive usage. METHODS: In this cross-sectional analysis, intake data of food, coffee, and additive usage from the adult respondents of the 2011-2012 Australian Health Survey were used. Participants were grouped according to the type of coffee (espresso and ground coffee, E&G; coffee made from coffee mixes and instant coffee, M&I; non-consumers, NC) and additives (milk, sugar, and intense sweetener) consumed. Adjusted food group intake was compared between consumption groups using general linear model. RESULTS: E&G drinkers had better SES than M&I and NC. After adjusting for covariates, the mean dairy intake of E&G drinkers was 22.2% higher than M&I drinkers (p < 0.001) and 33.1% higher than NC (p < 0.001). Mean discretionary food intake of E&G drinkers was 12.1% lower than M&I (p = 0.003) and 12.3% lower than NC (p = 0.001). In terms of additive usage, non-users of coffee additive had the lowest dairy food intake and the highest discretionary food intake. CONCLUSIONS: Coffee consumers' different preferences towards coffee type and additive usages reflected significant variations in their diet quality, even after adjustment of SES. Therefore, future epidemiological studies should consider separating coffee drinkers according to their habitual consumption of different types of coffee.

OBJECTIVE: Excessive consumption of discretionary foods/beverages in the Australian population has been identified, increasing the risk of obesity and chronic disease. The present study aimed to examine the associations between demographic, anthropometric and dietary factors and the consumption of discretionary foods, discretionary beverages and discretionary foods/beverages combined. DESIGN: Discretionary food/beverage consumption reported in two 24 h recalls was analysed, stratified by gender, age, socio-economic status, country of birth, BMI, waist circumference, and fruit and vegetable intakes. SETTING: 2011-12 National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey. SUBJECTS: Australian adults (n 7873) aged 19 years or above. RESULTS: Mean discretionary food and beverage consumption was 631 g (28 % by weight from foods; 72 % from beverages), providing 2721 kJ of energy intake (72 % from foods; 28 % from beverages). Total discretionary food/beverage consumption was higher in younger age groups (P<0·001), those in lower socio-economic categories (P<0·001), those born in Australia (P<0·001), those with higher BMI (P<0·001) and those with lower fruit (P<0·001) or vegetable intake (P<0·001). Discretionary beverage consumption (ß=6·6, P<0·001) was more strongly associated with BMI than discretionary food consumption (ß=0·5, P=0·01). CONCLUSIONS: Total discretionary food/beverage consumption as well as discretionary foods alone and discretionary beverages alone were associated with BMI in Australian adults. In addition, high intakes were associated with younger age, lower socio-economic status, and lower consumption of fruit and vegetables.

Objectives Globally, one-fifth of the world's children are stunted, however this statistic may be an underestimate as many countries lack comprehensive monitoring of height-for-age. Until a recent national health survey, Negara Brunei Darussalam has lacked the data to offer a comprehensive assessment of height-for-age among children. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of and factors associated with stunting among children aged 0-24 months in Negara Brunei Darussalam (Brunei). Methods A cross-sectional analyses of 396 children aged <24 months. Demographic, dietary and anthropometric measurements were recorded. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyse factors associated with moderate stunting. Results Almost one-quarter of infants (24%) were stunted. Male children and children who were preterm (<37 weeks gestation) were more than twice as likely to be stunted as their counterparts, respectively (OR 2.48; 95% CI 1.49-4.12; OR 2.14; 95% CI 1.06-4.33, respectively). Those who were born low birth weight (<2.5 kg) were three times more likely to be stunted than those born normal birth weight (OR 2.99; 95% CI 1.44-6.17). Conclusions for Practice This study presents data on prevalence of stunting in Brunei based upon the World Health Organization's growth charts. In addition it is also the first time that the factors associated with stunting among infants aged <24 months have been examined in Brunei. The stunting prevalence in Brunei is of concern due to the reported short and long-term negative impact on health later in life. The authors recommend close monitoring of pregnant women who are at risk of delivering low birth weight infants and frequent monitoring of low birth weight infants in line with World Health Organization nutrition goals. Existing height-for-age data should be integrated into global databases.
