RESUMO

Today, solar energy is taking an increasing share of the total energy mix. Unfortunately, many operational photovoltaic plants suffer from a plenitude of defects resulting in non-negligible power loss. The latter highly impacts the overall performance of the PV site; therefore, operators need to regularly inspect their solar parks for anomalies in order to prevent severe performance drops. As this operation is naturally labor-intensive and costly, we present in this paper a novel system for improved PV diagnostics using drone-based imagery. Our solution consists of three main steps. The first step locates the solar panels within the image. The second step detects the anomalies within the solar panels. The final step identifies the root cause of the anomaly. In this paper, we mainly focus on the second step comprising the detection of anomalies within solar panels, which is done using a region-based convolutional neural network (CNN). Experiments on six different PV sites with different specifications and a variety of defects demonstrate that our anomaly detector achieves a true positive rate or recall of more than 90% for a false positive rate of around 2% to 3% tested on a dataset containing nearly 9000 solar panels. Compared to the best state-of-the-art methods, the experiments revealed that we achieve a slightly higher true positive rate for a substantially lower false positive rate, while tested on a more realistic dataset.

The installation of solar plants everywhere in the world increases year by year. Automated diagnostic methods are needed to inspect the solar plants and to identify anomalies within these photovoltaic panels. The inspection is usually carried out by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) using thermal imaging sensors. The first step in the whole process is to detect the solar panels in those images. However, standard image processing techniques fail in case of low-contrast images or images with complex backgrounds. Moreover, the shades of power lines or structures similar to solar panels impede the automated detection process. In this research, two self-developed methods are compared for the detection of panels in this context, one based on classical techniques and another one based on deep learning, both with a common post-processing step. The first method is based on edge detection and classification, in contrast to the second method is based on training a region based convolutional neural networks to identify a panel. The first method corrects for the low contrast of the thermal image using several preprocessing techniques. Subsequently, edge detection, segmentation and segment classification are applied. The latter is done using a support vector machine trained with an optimized texture descriptor vector. The second method is based on deep learning trained with images that have been subjected to three different pre-processing operations. The postprocessing use the detected panels to infer the location of panels that were not detected. This step selects contours from detected panels based on the panel area and the angle of rotation. Then new panels are determined by the extrapolation of these contours. The panels in 100 random images taken from eleven UAV flights over three solar plants are labeled and used to evaluate the detection methods. The metrics for the new method based on classical techniques reaches a precision of 0.997, a recall of 0.970 and a F1 score of 0.983. The metrics for the method of deep learning reaches a precision of 0.996, a recall of 0.981 and a F1 score of 0.989. The two panel detection methods are highly effective in the presence of complex backgrounds.

Interpolation from a Color Filter Array (CFA) is the most common method for obtaining full color image data. Its success relies on the smart combination of a CFA and a demosaicing algorithm. Demosaicing on the one hand has been extensively studied. Algorithmic development in the past 20 years ranges from simple linear interpolation to modern neural-network-based (NN) approaches that encode the prior knowledge of millions of training images to fill in missing data in an inconspicious way. CFA design, on the other hand, is less well studied, although still recognized to strongly impact demosaicing performance. This is because demosaicing algorithms are typically limited to one particular CFA pattern, impeding straightforward CFA comparison. This is starting to change with newer classes of demosaicing that may be considered generic or CFA-agnostic. In this study, by comparing performance of two state-of-the-art generic algorithms, we evaluate the potential of modern CFA-demosaicing. We test the hypothesis that, with the increasing power of NN-based demosaicing, the influence of optimal CFA design on system performance decreases. This hypothesis is supported with the experimental results. Such a finding would herald the possibility of relaxing CFA requirements, providing more freedom in the CFA design choice and producing high-quality cameras.

In this paper, we present a complete loop detection and correction system developed for data originating from lidar scanners. Regarding detection, we propose a combination of a global point cloud matcher with a novel registration algorithm to determine loop candidates in a highly effective way. The registration method can deal with point clouds that are largely deviating in orientation while improving the efficiency over existing techniques. In addition, we accelerated the computation of the global point cloud matcher by a factor of 2⁻4, exploiting the GPU to its maximum. Experiments demonstrated that our combined approach more reliably detects loops in lidar data compared to other point cloud matchers as it leads to better precision⁻recall trade-offs: for nearly 100% recall, we gain up to 7% in precision. Finally, we present a novel loop correction algorithm that leads to an improvement by a factor of 2 on the average and median pose error, while at the same time only requires a handful of seconds to complete.

The goal of modern microscopy is to acquire high-quality image based data sets. A typical microscopy workflow is set up in order to address a specific biological question and involves different steps. The first step is to precisely define the biological question, in order to properly come to an experimental design for sample preparation and image acquisition. A better object representation allows biological users to draw more reliable scientific conclusions. Image restoration can manipulate the acquired data in an effort to reduce the impact of artifacts (spurious results) due to physical and technical limitations, resulting in a better representation of the object of interest. However, precise usage of these algorithms is necessary so as to avoid further artifacts that might influence the data analysis and bias the conclusions. It is essential to understand image acquisition, and how it introduces artifacts and degradations in the acquired data, so that their effects on subsequent analysis can be minimized. This paper provides an overview of the fundamental artifacts and degradations that affect many micrographs. We describe why artifacts appear, in what sense they impact overall image quality, and how to mitigate them by first improving the acquisition parameters and then applying proper image restoration techniques.

In this paper, we propose a novel approach to obtain accurate 3D reconstructions of large-scale environments by means of a mobile acquisition platform. The system incorporates a Velodyne LiDAR scanner, as well as a Point Grey Ladybug panoramic camera system. It was designed with genericity in mind, and hence, it does not make any assumption about the scene or about the sensor set-up. The main novelty of this work is that the proposed LiDAR mapping approach deals explicitly with the inhomogeneous density of point clouds produced by LiDAR scanners. To this end, we keep track of a global 3D map of the environment, which is continuously improved and refined by means of a surface reconstruction technique. Moreover, we perform surface analysis on consecutive generated point clouds in order to assure a perfect alignment with the global 3D map. In order to cope with drift, the system incorporates loop closure by determining the pose error and propagating it back in the pose graph. Our algorithm was exhaustively tested on data captured at a conference building, a university campus and an industrial site of a chemical company. Experiments demonstrate that it is capable of generating highly accurate 3D maps in very challenging environments. We can state that the average distance of corresponding point pairs between the ground truth and estimated point cloud approximates one centimeter for an area covering approximately 4000 m 2 . To prove the genericity of the system, it was tested on the well-known Kitti vision benchmark. The results show that our approach competes with state of the art methods without making any additional assumptions.

Today, environmental sustainability is one of the most critical issue. Hence, the food service industry is actively seeking ways to minimize its ecological footprint. One solution to address this issue is the adoption of reusable foodware in the food service industry. This approach requires a careful process for the collection and thorough cleaning of the foodware, ensuring it can be safely reused. However, reusable foodware might be damaged during the collection process, which can pose food safety hazards for customers. Additionally, there are cases where the cleaning process might not effectively remove all contaminants and therefore cannot be reused after the washing process. To ensure consumer safety, a manual inspection is typically conducted after the cleaning process. However, this step is labor-intensive and prone to human error, particularly as workers' attention may decrease over extended periods. Consequently, the adoption of precise and automated methods for detecting defects and contaminants is becoming crucial, not only to ensure safety but also to achieve scalability and enhance cost-efficiency in the pursuit of environmental sustainability. In our research, we explore various data augmentation strategies and the application of knowledge transfer from various samples of reusable food containers. This method only requires few images from a clean sample to teach the network about normal patterns, and to detect defects by identifying irregular details that do not exist in normal samples. This allows us to rapidly deploy the detection system even with a limited number of collected samples. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in detecting both contamination and cracks on food containers.

An adequate supply of oxygen-rich blood is vital to maintain cell homeostasis, cellular metabolism, and overall tissue health. While classical methods of measuring tissue ischemia are often invasive, localized and require skin contact or contrast agents, spectral imaging shows promise as a non-invasive, wide field, and contrast-free approach. We evaluate three novel reflectance-based spectral indices from the 460 - 840 nm spectral range. With the aim of enabling real time visualization of tissue ischemia, information is extracted from only 2-3 spectral bands. Video-rate spectral data was acquired from arm occlusion experiments in 27 healthy volunteers. The performance of the indices was evaluated against binary Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification of healthy versus ischemic skin tissue, two other indices from literature, and tissue oxygenation estimated using spectral unmixing. Robustness was tested by evaluating these under various lighting conditions and on both the dorsal and palmar sides of the hand. A novel index with real-time capabilities using reflectance information only from 547 nm and 556 nm achieves an average classification accuracy of 88.48, compared to 92.65 using an SVM trained on all available wavelengths. Furthermore, the index has a higher accuracy compared to reference methods and its time dynamics compare well against the expected clinical responses. This holds promise for robust real-time detection of tissue ischemia, possibly contributing to improved patient care and clinical outcomes.

Introduction: Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MC) is a rapidly progressive sarcoma that predominantly impacts the bones. Making up only 3% of chondrosarcomas, about one-third of these tumours develop in extra-skeletal sites. Case presentation: The authors present a clinical case of a 42-year-old patient who was diagnosed with MC 8 years ago, now admitted to the hospital with a palpable epigastric mass. Clinical and laboratory examinations showed consistent results for MC tumours, with metastasis to the body and tail of the pancreas and invasion of the splenic vein. Surgical resection and systemic screening were performed to ensure that there were no lesions elsewhere. Regular follow-up has found no localized lesions or complications after 15 months. Clinical discussion: Metastatic extra-skeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the pancreas is exceptionally rare. To our current understanding, only 14 such cases have been documented in medical literature. The symptoms of pancreatic metastasis are diverse and the radiographic features of metastatic mesenchymal chondrosarcoma are not typically distinct. Conclusions: Although MC tumours do not frequently occur in sites other than the axial system, a tumour presenting later in a patient with a history of MC should be reviewed to confirm the diagnosis of metastatic MC. Treatment can vary between surgery, radiation therapy and systemic therapy.

In this article, we propose a novel bilayer low-rankness measure and two models based on it to recover a low-rank (LR) tensor. The global low rankness of underlying tensor is first encoded by LR matrix factorizations (MFs) to the all-mode matricizations, which can exploit multiorientational spectral low rankness. Presumably, the factor matrices of all-mode decomposition are LR, since local low-rankness property exists in within-mode correlation. In the decomposed subspace, to describe the refined local LR structures of factor/subspace, a new low-rankness insight of subspace: a double nuclear norm scheme is designed to explore the so-called second-layer low rankness. By simultaneously representing the bilayer low rankness of the all modes of the underlying tensor, the proposed methods aim to model multiorientational correlations for arbitrary N -way ( N ≥ 3 ) tensors. A block successive upper-bound minimization (BSUM) algorithm is designed to solve the optimization problem. Subsequence convergence of our algorithms can be established, and the iterates generated by our algorithms converge to the coordinatewise minimizers in some mild conditions. Experiments on several types of public datasets show that our algorithm can recover a variety of LR tensors from significantly fewer samples than its counterparts.

The recent advent of 3D in electron microscopy (EM) has allowed for detection of nanometer resolution structures. This has caused an explosion in dataset size, necessitating the development of automated workflows. Moreover, large 3D EM datasets typically require hours to days to be acquired and accelerated imaging typically results in noisy data. Advanced denoising techniques can alleviate this, but tend to be less accessible to the community due to low-level programming environments, complex parameter tuning or a computational bottleneck. We present DenoisEM: an interactive and GPU accelerated denoising plugin for ImageJ that ensures fast parameter tuning and processing through parallel computing. Experimental results show that DenoisEM is one order of magnitude faster than related software and can accelerate data acquisition by a factor of 4 without significantly affecting data quality. Lastly, we show that image denoising benefits visualization and (semi-)automated segmentation and analysis of ultrastructure in various volume EM datasets.

Today, many MRI reconstruction techniques exist for undersampled MRI data. Regularization-based techniques inspired by compressed sensing allow for the reconstruction of undersampled data that would lead to an ill-posed reconstruction problem. Parallel imaging enables the reconstruction of MRI images from undersampled multi-coil data that leads to a well-posed reconstruction problem. Autocalibrating pMRI techniques encompass pMRI techniques where no explicit knowledge of the coil sensivities is required. A first purpose of this paper is to derive a novel autocalibration approach for pMRI that allows for the estimation and use of smooth, but high-bandwidth coil profiles instead of a compactly supported kernel. These high-bandwidth models adhere more accurately to the physics of an antenna system. The second purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the feasibility of a parameter-free reconstruction algorithm that combines autocalibrating pMRI and compressed sensing. Therefore, we present several techniques for automatic parameter estimation in MRI reconstruction. Experiments show that a higher reconstruction accuracy can be had using high-bandwidth coil models and that the automatic parameter choices yield an acceptable result.
