RESUMO

The populations of the lowest excited helium states 2s 3S1, 2s 1S, 2p 3P0 J, and 2p 1P0 created in an atmospheric helium capillary dielectric barrier discharge were determined by means of optical emission spectroscopy. The emitted intensities of 388, 501, 587, and 667 nm lines were measured side-on and end-on with respect to the discharge axis. The comparison of optically thin side-on spectra with end-on spectra, which exhibited the absorption effects in the line kernels, enabled the determination of the average values of the number densities n1 in the considered He states along the plasma length L. The field of the theoretical profiles for a series of the n1L parameters pertinent to the experimental conditions was calculated for each line. By introducing the experimental data into the field of calculated curves, n1L corresponding to the particular state could be obtained. The measurements of the emission profiles were done as a function of the discharge voltage in the range covering homogeneous as well as filamentary DBD operation mode. Due to nonuniformity of the excited atom density distribution along the plasma, the values of n1 could be obtained only in the homogeneous operation mode where the nonuniformity was small. The following maximum values were found for the number densities in the investigated states: n1 av (2s 3S1) = (2.9 ± 1.1) × 1013 cm−3, n1 av (2s 1S) = (1.4 ± 0.5) × 1013 cm−3, n1 av (2p 3P0 J) = (1.1 ± 0.4) × 1013 cm−3, n1 av (2p 1P0) = (4.2 ± 1.6) × 1012 cm−3, and they represent the average populations along the plasma column in the capillary.

Various approaches have been taken over the years to quantify event-related potential (ERP) responses and these approaches may vary in their utility connecting empirical research and scientific claims. In this work we compared different quantification methods as well as the influence of three reference methods (linked mastoids, average reference, and current source density) on the resulting ERP amplitude. We use the experimental effects and effect sizes (Cohen's d) to evaluate the different methodological variants and we calculate intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). In addition, the bootstrapped standard error of the means (SME, Luck et al., 2021), which was recently suggested as a quality criterion for ERP research, is used for this purpose. Our example for an ERP is the feedback-related negativity (FRN) to feedback about trustee behavior in a trust game with participants in the trustor position. We found that the quantification methods concerning the FRN influenced the absolute value of condition effects in the experimental paradigm. Yet, the patterns of effects were detected by all chosen methods, except for the 'individual difference wave'-based peak window approach. In addition, our findings stress the importance of checking the reference electrodes concerning effects of the experimental conditions. Furthermore, interactions of topographical distribution and reference choice should be considered. Finally, we were able to show that the SME is lower for more datapoints that are given in the quantification period of the FRN, and higher for more negative FRN amplitudes. These biases may lead to divergence of SME and effect size detection. Therefore, if the SME was used to compare different processing choices one should consider controlling for these important aspects of the data and possibly include other quality criteria like effect sizes.

The present study contributes to the evaluation of dielectric barrier discharge-based ambient ionization for mass spectrometric analysis (DBDI-MS) by providing a further step towards an understanding of underlying ionization processes. This examination highlights the effect of physical discharge modes on the ionization efficiency of the DBDI source. A distinction is made between the homogeneous and filamentary discharge mode due to different plasma gases in barrier configurations. Therefore, we first report on discharge modes of DBDI by demonstrating a universally applicable method to classify the predominant modes. Then, the ionization efficiency of these two modes is evaluated by a laser desorption-DBDI-MS with different molecular analytes. Here, the laser desorption is used to deliver neutral analytes which will be ionized by the plasma jet applied as dielectric barrier discharge ionization. With a clear increase of signal intensities in the homogeneous mode in contrast to the filamentary one, the present study indicates a pronounced dependence of the ionization efficiency on the discharge mode allowing further insight into the mechanisms of the ionization process.

RESUMO

In this study a simple micro-tube-based system for analysis of metal-containing liquids is introduced and its analytical performance is evaluated. It is based on a miniaturised dielectric barrier discharge driven at atmospheric pressure. The emission lines of various elements are observed. The system is developed for quantitative measurements and the limits of detection are determined. Because of very low flow rates of just microL min(-1) the approach requires extremely low sample volumes.

Endothermy has facilitated mammalian species radiation, but the sequence of events leading to sustained thermogenesis is debated in multiple evolutionary models. Here we study the Lesser hedgehog tenrec (Echinops telfairi), a phylogenetically ancient, 'protoendothermic' eutherian mammal, in which constantly high body temperatures are reported only during reproduction. Evidence for nonshivering thermogenesis is found in vivo during periodic ectothermic-endothermic transitions. Anatomical studies reveal large brown fat-like structures in the proximity of the reproductive organs, suggesting physiological significance for parental care. Biochemical analysis demonstrates high mitochondrial proton leak catalysed by an uncoupling protein 1 ortholog. Strikingly, bioenergetic profiling of tenrec uncoupling protein 1 reveals similar thermogenic potency as modern mouse uncoupling protein 1, despite the large phylogenetic distance. The discovery of functional brown adipose tissue in this 'protoendothermic' mammal links nonshivering thermogenesis directly to the roots of eutherian evolution, suggesting physiological importance prior to sustained body temperatures and migration to the cold.
