In the last years, the hypothesis that elevated levels of proinflammatory cytokines contribute to the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental diseases has gained popularity. IL-1 is one of the main cytokines found to be elevated in Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by defects in social communication and cognitive impairments. In this study, we demonstrate that mice lacking IL-1 signaling display autistic-like defects associated with an excessive number of synapses. We also show that microglia lacking IL-1 signaling at early neurodevelopmental stages are unable to properly perform the process of synapse engulfment and display excessive activation of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling. Notably, even the acute inhibition of IL-1R1 by IL-1Ra is sufficient to enhance mTOR signaling and reduce synaptosome phagocytosis in WT microglia. Finally, we demonstrate that rapamycin treatment rescues the defects in IL-1R deficient mice. These data unveil an exclusive role of microglial IL-1 in synapse refinement via mTOR signaling and indicate a novel mechanism possibly involved in neurodevelopmental disorders associated with defects in the IL-1 pathway.

BACKGROUND: A relationship between the extent of resection (EOR) and survival has been demonstrated in patients with glioblastomas (GBMs). However, despite gross total resection (GTR) of the enhancing nodule (EN), GBMs usually relapse, generally near the surgical cavity. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the prognostic role of FLAIR resection of GBMs by analyzing pre- and post-operative MRIs to estimate the EOR of EN, FLAIR-hyperintense regions and total tumor volume (TTV). METHODS: Radiologic and clinical outcomes were analyzed retrospectively. Pre- and post-operative EN volume, pre- and postoperative FLAIR volume (POFV), and pre- and postoperative TTV were analyzed. EOR was then calculated for each component. Time-dependent ROC curves and cut-off values for pre- and post-operative volumes and EOR were calculated. A Kaplan-Meier analysis with the log-rank test and Cox regression analysis were then used to analyze progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: We did not find any correlation between EOR of FLAIR-altered regions and patient survival. On the other hand, there were statistically significant relationships between the prognosis and both a preoperative EN volume less than 31.35 cm3 (p=0.032) and a postoperative EN volume less than 0.57 cm3 (p=0.015). Moreover, an EOR of EN greater than 96% was significantly associated with the prognosis (p=0.0051 for OS and p=0.022 for PFS). CONCLUSION: Our retrospective, multi-center study suggests that survival in patients with GBM is not affected by the extent of resection of FLAIR-hyperintense areas.

BACKGROUND: Pineal parenchymal cell tumors constitute a rare group of primary central nervous system neoplasms (less than 1%). Their classification, especially the intermediate subtype (PPTIDs), remains challenging. METHODS: A literature review was conducted, navigating through anatomo-pathological, radiotherapy, and neurosurgical dimensions, aiming for a holistic understanding of these tumors. RESULTS: PPTIDs, occupying an intermediate spectrum of malignancy, reveal diverse histological patterns, mitotic activity, and distinct methylation profiles. Surgical treatment is the gold standard, but when limited to partial removal, radiotherapy becomes crucial. While surgical approaches are standardized, due to the low prevalence of the pathology and absence of randomized prospective studies, there are no shared guidelines about radiation treatment modalities. CONCLUSION: Surgical removal remains pivotal, demanding a personalized approach based on the tumor extension. This review underscores the considerable variability in treatment approaches and reported survival rates within the existing literature, emphasizing the need for ongoing research to better define optimal therapeutic strategies and prognostic factors for PPTIDs, aiming for further and more detailed stratification among them.

The carnitine/acylcarnitine transporter is a transport system whose function is essential for the mitochondrial ß-oxidation of fatty acids. Here, the presence of carnitine/acylcarnitine carrier (CACT) in nervous tissue and its sub-cellular localization in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons have been investigated. Western blot analysis using a polyclonal anti-CACT antibody produced in our laboratory revealed the presence of CACT in all the nervous tissue extracts analyzed. Confocal microscopy experiments performed on fixed and permeabilized DRG neurons co-stained with the anti-CACT antibody and the mitochondrial marker MitoTracker Red clearly showed a mitochondrial localization for the carnitine/acylcarnitine transporter. The transport activity of CACT from DRG extracts reconstituted into liposomes was about 50 % in respect to liver extracts. The experimental data here reported represent the first direct evidence of the expression of the carnitine/acylcarnitine transporter in sensory neurons, thus supporting the existence of the ß-oxidation pathway in these cells.

Neuregulin1 is a family of growth and differentiation factors involved in various functions of both peripheral and central nervous system including the regenerative processes that underlie regeneration of damaged peripheral nerves. In the present study we tested in vitro the effect of Neuregulin1 administration on dissociated rat dorsal root ganglion (DRG). Activity of neuregulin1 was compared to the activity of nerve growth factor in the same in vitro experimental model. Results showed that neurite outgrowth is enhanced by the addition of both neuregulin1 and nerve growth factor to the culture medium. While neuregulin1 was responsible for the growth of longer neurites, DRG neurons incubated with nerve growth factor showed shorter and more branched axons. Using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay we also showed that the release of nerve growth factor, but not of brain derived neurotrophic factor is improved in DRG neuron treated with neuregulin1. On the other hand, the assay with growth factor blocking antibody, showed that effects exerted by neuregulin1 on neurite outgrowth is only partially due to the release of nerve growth factor. Taken together the results of this study provide a better understanding on the role of neuregulin1 in sensory neurons.

Adult mesenchymal stem cells have self-renewal and multiple differentiation potentials, and play important roles in regenerative medicine. However, their use may be limited by senescence or age of the donor, leading to changes in stem cell functionality. We investigated morphological, molecular and functional differences between bone marrow-derived (MSC) and adipose-derived (ASC) stem cells isolated from neonatal, young and old rats compared to Schwann cells from the same animals. Immunocytochemistry, RT-PCR, proliferation assays, western blotting and transmission electron microscopy were used to investigate expression of senescence markers. Undifferentiated and differentiated ASC and MSC from animals of different ages expressed Notch-2 at similar levels; protein-38 and protein-53 were present in all groups of cells with a trend towards increased levels in cells from older animals compared to those from neonatal and young rats. Following co-culture with adult neuronal cells, dMSC and dASC from animals of all ages elicited robust neurite outgrowth. Mitotracker(®) staining was consistent with ultrastructural changes seen in the mitochondria of cells from old rats, indicative of senescence. In conclusion, this study showed that although the cells from aged animals expressed markers of senescence, aged MSC and ASC differentiated into SC-like cells still retain potential to support axon regeneration.

Radiotherapy accelerators have undergone continuous technological developments. We investigated the differences between Radixact™ and VMAT treatment plans. Sixty patients were included in this study. Dosimetric comparison between the Radixact™ and VMAT plans was performed for six cancer sites: whole-brain, head and neck, lymphoma, lung, prostate, and rectum. The VMAT plans were generated with two Elekta linear accelerators (Synergy® and Versa HD™). The planning target volume (PTV) coverage, organs-at-risk dose constraints, and four dosimetric indexes were considered. The deliverability of the plans was assessed using quality assurance (gamma index evaluation) measurements; clinical judgment was included in the assessment. The mean AAPM TG218 (3%-2 mm, global normalization) gamma index values were 99.4%, 97.8%, and 96.6% for Radixact™, Versa HD™, and Synergy®, respectively. Radixact™ performed better than Versa HD™ in terms of dosimetric indexes, hippocampi D100%, spinal cord Dmax, rectum V38.4  Gy, bladder V30 Gy, and V40 Gy. Versa HD™ saved more of the (lungs-PTV) V5 Gy and (lungs-PTV) Dmean, heart Dmean, breasts V4 Gy, and bowel V45 Gy. Regarding Synergy®, the head and neck Radixact™ plan saved more of the parotid gland, oral cavity, and supraglottic larynx. From a clinical point of view, for the head and neck, prostate, and rectal sites, the Radixact™ and Versa HD™ plans were similar; Radixact™ plans were preferable for the head and neck and rectum to Synergy® plans. The quality of linac plans has improved, and differences with tomotherapy have decreased. However, tomotherapy continues to be an essential add-on in multi-machine departments.

Brain metastases (BMs) represent the most frequent metastatic event in the course of lung cancer patients, occurring in approximately 50% of patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and in up to 70% in patients with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). Thus far, many advances have been made in the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, allowing improvements in the prognosis of these patients. The modern approach relies on the integration of several factors, such as accurate histological and molecular profiling, comprehensive assessment of clinical parameters and precise definition of the extent of intracranial and extracranial disease involvement. The combination of these factors is pivotal to guide the multidisciplinary discussion and to offer the most appropriate treatment to these patients based on a personalized approach. Focal radiotherapy (RT), in all its modalities (radiosurgery (SRS), fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT), adjuvant stereotactic radiotherapy (aSRT)), is the cornerstone of BM management, either alone or in combination with surgery and systemic therapies. We review the modern therapeutic strategies available to treat lung cancer patients with brain involvement. This includes an accurate review of the different technical solutions which can be exploited to provide a "state-of-art" focal RT and also a detailed description of the systemic agents available as effective alternatives to SRS/SRT when a targetable molecular driver is present. In addition to the validated treatment options, we also discuss the future perspective for focal RT, based on emerging clinical reports (e.g., SRS for patients with many BMs from NSCLC or SRS for BMs from SCLC), together with a presentation of innovative and promising findings in translational research and the combination of novel targeted agents with SRS/SRT.

Transplantation of autologous Schwann cells (SCs) is a promising approach for treating various peripheral nerve disorders, including chronic denervation. However, given their drawbacks, such as invasive biopsy and lengthy culture in vitro, alternative cell sources would be needed. Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) are a candidate, and in this study rat ASCs transdifferentiated into a SC phenotype (dASC) cocultured with dorsal root ganglion neurons were shown to associate with neurites and to express myelin basic protein (MBP)-positive myelin protein. Furthermore, dASCs transplanted into a chronically denervated rat common peroneal nerve survived for at least for 10 weeks, maintaining their differentiated state. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that transplanted dASCs associated with regenerating axons, forming MBP-/protein zero-positive myelin sheaths. The cell survival and myelin expression assessed by double labelling with S100 and glial fibrillary acidic protein were similar between the dASC- and SC-transplanted nerves. Importantly, transplantation of dASCs resulted in dramatically improved motor functional recovery and nerve regeneration, with a level comparable to, or even superior to, transplantation of SCs. In conclusion, dASCs are capable of myelinating axons in vivo and enhancing functional outcome after chronic denervation.

RESUMO

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive primary brain tumour. As GBM incidence is associated with age, elderly people represent a consistent subgroup of patients. Elderly people with GBM show dismal prognosis (about 6 months) and limited response to treatments. Age is a negative prognostic factor, which correlates with clinical frailty, poorer tolerability to surgery or adjuvant radio-chemotherapy, and higher occurrence of comorbidities and/or secondary complications. The aim of this paper is to review the clinical and molecular characteristics, current therapeutic options, and prognostic factors of elderly patients with GBM.

Introduction. Elderly glioblastoma (GBM) patients often show limited response to treatment and poor outcome. Here, we provide a case series of elderly GBM patients from our Institution, in whom we assessed the clinical characteristics, feasibility of surgical resection, response to adjuvant treatments, and outcome, along with the impact of comorbidities and clinical status on survival. Patients and Methods. We included patients ≥ 65-year-old. We collected information about clinical and molecular features, extent of resection, adjuvant treatments, treatment-related complications, and outcome. Results. We included 135 patients. Median age was 71 years. In total, 127 patients (94.0%) had a Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) ≥70 and 61/135 (45.2%) a Charlson Comorbidity Score (CCI) > 3. MGMTp methylation was found in 70/135 (51.9%). Subtotal resections (STRs), gross-total resections (GTRs), and biopsies were 102 (75.6%), 10 (7.4%) and 23 (17.0%), respectively. Median progression-free survival and overall survival (mOS) were 8.0 and 10.5 months for the whole cohort. Notably, GTR and radio-chemotherapy with temozolomide in patients with MGMTp methylation were associated with significantly longer mOS (32.8 and 44.8 months, respectively). In a multivariable analysis, risk of death was affected by STR vs. GTR (HR 2.8, p = 0.002), MGMTp methylation (HR 0.55, p = 0.007), and KPS at baseline ≥70 (HR 0.43, p = 0.031). Conversely, CCI and post-surgical complications were not significant. Conclusions. Elderly GBM patients often have a dismal prognosis. However, it is possible to identify a subgroup with favourable clinical and molecular features, who benefit from GTR and radio-chemotherapy with temozolomide. A comprehensive prognostic score is needed to guide treatment modality and predict the outcome.

Local ablative therapy (LAT), intended as stereotactic ablative radiotherapy or stereotactic radiosurgery, is a well-recognized effective treatment for selected patients with oligometastatic NSCLC. Current clinical evidence supports LAT alone or in combination with systemic therapies. Our retrospective mono-institutional study aims to assess the role of LAT with a peculiar focus on the largest series of non-oncogene addicted oligometastatic NSCLC patients to date. We included in this analysis all patients with the mentioned disease characteristics who underwent LAT for intracranial and/or extracranial metastases between 2011 and 2020. The main endpoints were local control (LC), progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in the whole population and after stratification for prognostic factors. We identified a series of 245 consecutive patients (314 lesions), included in this analysis (median age 69 years). In 77% of patients, a single metastasis was treated with LAT and intracranial involvement was the most frequent indication (53% of patients) in our series. The overall response rate (ORR) after LAT was 95%. In case of disease progression, 66 patients underwent new local treatments with curative intent. With a median follow-up of 18 months, median PFS was 13 months (1-year PFS 50%) and median OS was 32 months (1-year OS 75%). The median LC was not reached (1-year LC 89%). The presence of brain metastases was the only factor that negatively affected all clinical endpoints, with a 1-year LC, PFS and OS of 82%, 29% and 62% respectively, compared to 95%, 73% and 91%, respectively, for patients without BMs (p < 0.001 for each endpoint). At the multivariate analysis, mediastinal nodal involvement at baseline (p = 0.049), ECOG PS = 1 (p = 0.011), intracranial disease involvement (p = 0.001), administration of chemotherapy in combination with LAT (p = 0.020), and no delivery of further local treatment for progression or delivery of focal treatment for intracranial progression (p < 0.001) were related to a poorer OS. In our retrospective series, which is to our knowledge the largest to date, LAT showed encouraging results and confirmed the safety and effectiveness of focal treatments in non-oncogene addicted oligometastatic NSCLC patients.

γ-Aminobutyric acid type B receptors (GABA-B) are expressed in glial cells of the central and peripheral nervous systems, and recent evidence has shown their importance in modulating physiological parameters of Schwann cell (SC). SC play essential roles in peripheral nerve regeneration, but several drawbacks prevent their use for nerve repair. Adult stem cells from adipose tissue (ASC) or bone marrow (BM-MSC) can be differentiated into an SC-like phenotype and used as SC replacements. The aim of this study was to investigate GABA-B receptor functional expression in differentiated stem cells by assessing the similarity to SC. By means of RT-PCR and Western blot methodologies, BM-MSC and ASC were found to express both GABA-B1 and GABA-B2 receptor subunits. The expression levels of GABA-B1b and GABA-B2 receptors were influenced by SC-like differentiation, as shown by Western blot studies. GABA-B receptor stimulation with baclofen reduced the proliferation rate of SC and differentiated ASC (dASC) but not that of dBM-MSC. In conclusion, both of the subunits that assemble into a functional GABA-B receptor are present in differentiated stem cells. Furthermore, GABA-B receptors in dASC are functionally active, regulating a key process such as proliferation. The presence of functional GABA-B receptors on differentiated stem cells opens new opportunities for a possible pharmacological modulation of their physiology and phenotype.

Specific sensory neuronal subpopulations show contrasting responses to peripheral nerve injury, as shown by the axotomy-induced death of many cutaneous sensory neurons whilst muscular sensory afferents survive an identical insult. We used a novel combination of retrograde neuronal tracing with immunohistochemistry and laser microdissection techniques, in order to describe the neurochemistry of medial gastrocnemius (muscular sensory afferents) and sural (cutaneous sensory afferents) branches of the rat sciatic nerve and relate this to the pro-apoptotic caspase-3 gene expression following nerve transection. Our results demonstrated distinctions in medial gastrocnemius and sural neuron populations with the most striking difference in the respective proportions of isolectin B4 (IB4) staining neurons (3.7 V 32.8%). The mean neuronal area of the medial gastrocnemius (MG) neurons was larger than that of the sural (SUR) neurons (1,070.8 V 646.2 µm²) and each phenotypic group was significantly smaller in sural neurons than in MG neurons. At 1 week post-axotomy, MG neurons markedly downregulated caspase-3, whilst SUR neurons upregulated caspase-3 gene expression; this may be attributable to the differing IB4-positive composition of the subpopulations. These findings provide further clarification in the understanding of two distinct neuronal populations used increasingly in nerve injury models.

Brain metastases (BMs) represent the most frequent event during the course of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) disease. Recent advancements in the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures result in increased incidence and earlier diagnosis of BMs, with an emerging need to optimize the prognosis of these patients through the adoption of tailored treatment solutions. Nowadays a personalized and multidisciplinary approach should rely on several clinical and molecular factors like patient's performance status, extent and location of brain involvement, extracranial disease control and the presence of any "druggable" molecular target. Radiation therapy (RT), in all its focal (radiosurgery and fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy) or extended (whole brain radiotherapy) declinations, is a cornerstone of BMs management, either alone or combined with surgery and systemic therapies. Our review aims to provide an overview of the many modern RT solutions available for the treatment of BMs from NSCLC in the different clinical scenarios (single lesion, oligo and poly-metastasis, leptomeningeal carcinomatosis). This includes a detailed review of the current standard of care in each setting, with a presentation of the literature data and of the possible technical solutions to offer a "state-of-art" treatment to these patients. In addition to the validated treatment options, we will also discuss the future perspectives on emerging RT technical strategies (e.g., hippocampal avoidance whole brain RT, simultaneous integrated boost, radiosurgery for multiple lesions), and present the innovative and promising findings regarding the combination of novel targeted agents such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors and immune checkpoint inhibitors with brain irradiation.

RESUMO

The malignant transformation of a cell produces the accumulation of several cellular adaptions. These changes determine variations in biological processes that are necessary for a cancerous cell to survive during stressful conditions. Autophagy is the main nutrient recycling and metabolic adaptor mechanism in eukaryotic cells, represents a continuous source of energy and biomolecules, and is fundamental to preserve the correct cellular homeostasis during unfavorable conditions. In recent decades, several findings demonstrate a close relationship between autophagy, malignant transformation, and cancer progression. The evidence suggests that autophagy in the cancer context has a bipolar role (it may act as a tumor suppressor and as a mechanism of cell survival for established tumors) and demonstrates that the targeting of autophagy may represent novel therapeutic opportunities. Accordingly, the modulation of autophagy has important clinical benefits in patients affected by diverse cancer types. Currently, about 30 clinical trials are actively investigating the efficacy of autophagy modulators to enhance the efficacy of cytotoxic chemotherapy treatments. A deeper understanding of the molecular pathways regulating autophagy in the cancer context will provide new ways to target autophagy for improving the therapeutic benefits. Herein, we describe how autophagy participates during malignant transformation and cancer progression, and we report the ultimate efforts to translate this knowledge into specific therapeutic approaches to treat and cure human cancers.

BACKGROUND: Medulloblastoma is a highly malignant, embryonal tumor, which is rare in adults, and shows distinct clinical, histopathological, molecular and treatment response features. METHODS: We retrospectively investigated 44 adults (age 17-48 years) with an histological diagnosis of medulloblastoma, and in 23 immunohistochemistry was used to identif y the molecular subgroups. We analyzed demographic, diagnostic, therapeutic and cognitive data, and correlated with PFS (progression-free-survival) and OS (overall survival). RESULTS: We observed a male prevalence and a median age of 31 years. Symptoms at onset were related to infratentorial location, while myeloradicular and/or cranial nerve involvement was rare. Histological examination showed the classic variant in 75% of patients, the desmoplastic/nodular in 23% and the anaplastic in one. As for molecular diagnosis, 17 patients were SHH and 6 non-WNT/non-SHH (5 group 4 and 1 group 3), while no WNT subgroup was found. The SHH subgroup had a prevalence of high-risk patients and leptomeningeal involvement. Patients underwent grosstotal or subtotal/partial resection, and craniospinal irradiation, followed in 20 cases by adjuvant chemotherapy. Median OS and PFS were 16.9 and 12 years, respectively. Metastatic disease at presentation and subtotal/partial resection were associated with worse prognosis, while the addition of chemotherapy did not yield a significant advantage over radiotherapy alone. Cognitive impairment in long-term survivors was limited and late relapses occurred in 15% of patients. CONCLUSIONS: Future studies with adequate sample size and long-term follow-up should prospectively investigate the role of surgery and adjuvant therapies across the different molecular subgroups to see whether a personalized approach is feasible.

BACKGROUND: To define efficacy and toxicity of Immunotherapy (IT) with stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) including radiosurgery (RS) or hypofractionated SRT (HFSRT) for brain metastases (BM) from non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in a multicentric retrospective study from AIRO (Italian Association of Radiotherapy and Clinical Oncology). METHODS: NSCLC patients with BM receiving SRT + IT and treated in 19 Italian centers were analyzed and compared with a control group of patients treated with exclusive SRT. RESULTS: One hundred patients treated with SRT + IT and 50 patients treated with SRT-alone were included. Patients receiving SRT + IT had a longer intracranial Local Progression-Free Survival (iLPFS) (propensity score-adjusted P = .007). Among patients who, at the diagnosis of BM, received IT and had also extracranial progression (n = 24), IT administration after SRT was shown to be related to a better overall survival (OS) (P = .037). A multivariate analysis, non-adenocarcinoma histology, KPS = 70 and use of HFSRT were associated with a significantly worse survival (P = .019, P = .017 and P = .007 respectively). Time interval between SRT and IT ≤7 days (n = 90) was shown to be related to a longer OS if compared to SRT-IT interval >7 days (n = 10) (propensity score-adjusted P = .008). The combined treatment was well tolerated. No significant difference in terms of radionecrosis between SRT + IT patients and SRT-alone patients was observed. The time interval between SRT and IT had no impact on the toxicity rate. CONCLUSIONS: Combined SRT + IT was a safe approach, associated with a better iLPFS if compared to exclusive SRT.

AIM OF THE STUDY: The study aims to quantify the incidence of ocular complications in patients irradiated on the head and neck area in our medical center, stratified by type of neoplasm and radiation dose received. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From an existing database of patients radio-treated in our center, we selected 25 patients irradiated in the 2011-2018 period. The patients had been treated for orbital lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma and cranial base meningioma. The selected patients received an ophthalmologic evaluation which included a complete ophthalmological and orthoptic assessment. RESULTS: Our results showed a significantly higher incidence of DES (dry eye syndrome) and corneal complications for eyes receiving a Dmax higher than 40 Gy, as well as for cataract incidence in eyes that had received a Dmax to the lens higher than 5 Gy. We found an overall thinning of the RNFL (retinal nerve fiber layer) in eyes that had received a Dmax higher than 50 Gy, as well as a greater MD (mean deviation) from normal visual field values. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, we can say that the study confirms the presence of a correlation between the received radiation dose and the onset of eye complications, despite the small sample.

INTRODUCTION: The new concept of separation surgery has changed the surgical paradigms for the treatment of metastatic epidural spinal cord compression (MESCC), shifting from aggressive cytoreductive surgery towards less invasive surgery with the aim to achieve circumferential separation of the spinal cord and create a safe target for high dose Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), which turned out to be the real game-changer for disease's local control. DISCUSSION: In this review a qualitative analysis of the English literature has been performed according to the rating of evidence, with the aim to underline the increasingly role of the concept of separation surgery in MESCC treatment. A review of the main steps in the evolution of both radiotherapy and surgery fields have been described, highlighting the important results deriving from their integration. CONCLUSION: Compared with more aggressive surgical approaches, the concept of separation surgery together with the advancements of radiotherapy and the use of SBRT for the treatment of MESCC showed promising results in order to achieve a valuable local control while reducing surgical related morbidities and complications.
