RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the 5-year clinical performance of a glass hybrid restorative system and a nano-hybrid resin composite in moderate to large two-surface class II cavities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was carried out by dental schools in Zagreb, Croatia; Izmir, Turkey; Belgrade, Serbia; and Milan, Italy. A total of 180 patients requiring two class-II two-surface restorations in the molars of the same jaw were recruited. The teeth were randomly restored with either a nano-hybrid resin composite (Tetric EvoCeram, Ivoclar Vivadent) or a glass-hybrid material (EQUIA Forte, GC). During the 5-year follow-up, two calibrated evaluators at each centre scored the restorations annually using the FDI-2 scoring system. The survival rates were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method and compared using non-parametric matched pair tests (p < 0.05). RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between the overall survival and success rates of the two types of restorations (p>0.05). The success rates (FDI-2 scores 1-3) for EQUIA Forte were 81.9% (average annual failure rate: 3.9%) and 90.7% for Tetric EvoCeram (average annual failure rate: 1.9%). The survival rates (FDI-2 scores 1-4) for EQUIA Forte and Tetric EvoCeram were 94.5% and 94.4%, respectively, with an average annual failure rate of 1.1%. CONCLUSIONS: In terms of success and survival rates, both the glass-hybrid restorative system and the nano-hybrid resin composite have been shown to perform satisfactorily. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The results of this study indicate that EQUIA Forte can be one of the therapeutic options for moderate to large two-surface class II restorations of posterior teeth.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) requires systematically collected and standardized data. AIM: To describe a novel multilevel calibration procedure in primary dentition. DESIGN: Calibration method involved two calibration levels: the first (L1 ) involved an interexaminer agreement between three main investigators, the group leaders (GLs) in the following level; the second level (L2 ) involved three groups of 11 paediatric dentists and interexaminer agreement assessment according to the GLs in each group. The study sample consisted of 650 primary teeth surfaces in eight children (mean age 6.56 ± 2.22 years). Surface-by-surface percent agreement, tooth-by-tooth percent agreement, Cohen's kappa, and Fleiss kappa statistics were used to calculate interexaminer reliability. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS 27.0. RESULTS: Surface-by-surface percent agreement regarding ICDASepi-merged revealed almost perfect agreement (>90.00%) on both L1 and L2 . Kappa values and ranges showed good agreement at both L1 (overall κ = .95) and L2 (overall κ = .98) and almost perfect consistency was detected between GLs at L1 (>91.30%) and substantial agreement at L2 (>85.00%). All examiners at L2 showed almost perfect positive agreement (sensitivity = 96.77%-100%) when detecting the presence of dental plaque. CONCLUSION: The calibration procedure appeared feasible prior to organizing multicenter epidemiological oral health survey in large population groups of preschool children, with higher number of examiners.

RESUMO

Gingiva-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (GMSCs) have been shown to play an important role in periodontitis. However, how P. gingivalis, one of the key etiological agents of the disease, affects healthy (H)- and periodontitis (P)-GMSCs is unknown. To address this problem, we established 10 H-GMSC and 12 P-GMSC lines. No significant differences in morphology, differentiation into chondroblasts and adipocytes, expression of characteristic MSCS markers, including pericyte antigens NG2 and PDGFR, were observed between H- and P-GMSC lines. However, proliferation, cell size and osteogenic potential were higher in P-GMSCs, in contrast to their lower ability to suppress mononuclear cell proliferation. P. gingivalis up-regulated the mRNA expression of IL-6, IL-8, MCP-1, GRO-α, RANTES, TLR-2, HIF-1α, OPG, MMP-3, SDF-1, HGF and IP-10 in P-GMSCs, whereas only IL-6, MCP-1 and GRO-α were up-regulated in H-GMSCs. The expression of MCP-1, RANTES, IP-10 and HGF was significantly higher in P-GMSCs compared to H-GMSCs, but IDO1 was lower. No significant changes in the expression of TLR-3, TLR-4, TGF-ß, LAP, IGFBP4 and TIMP-1 were observed in both types of GMSCs. In conclusion, our results suggest that P-GMSCs retain their pro-inflammatory properties in culture, exhibit lower immunosuppressive potential than their healthy counterparts, and impaired regeneration-associated gene induction in culture. All these functions are potentiated significantly by P. gingivalis treatment.

RESUMO

We presented surgical treatment of three patients indicated for implantation of a permanent mechanical circulatory support device and with the associated left ventricular aneurysms. In order to evade the left ventricular rupture, adverse thromboembolic events and provide safe implantation of the inflow cannula, LVAD HM3 implantation together with the reconstruction of the left ventricular aneurysmal wall was performed in two patients. Regarding the third patient, LVAD implantation upon the reconstruction of the left ventricular wall was abandoned because there was no safe location for placement of the inflow cannula.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the biocompatibility of nanostructured materials based on highly active calcium silicates mixed with different radiocontrast agents in comparison to MTA+ using in vitro and in vivo model. Morphology of materials' samples was analyzed using SEM while the phase compositions were identified by XRD. pH values of materials' suspensions were conducted by pH-meter. The cytotoxicity of materials' solutions was tested by MTT test (100, 50, 25 and 12.5 mg/ml). LDH and 3H-thymidine assay were utilized for biocompatibility investigations of materials' eluates (24 h, 7 day and 21 day). Eighteen Guinea pigs were used for intramuscular implantation, as teflon tubes with freshly prepared materials were placed into intramuscular pockets. All samples were composed of round and needle-like particles equally distributed with Ca/Si ratio ~2.7 at%, with the presence of hydrated calcium silicate phases. The pH values of ALBO-MPCA1 and ALBO-MPCA2 were high alkaline, while in case of MTA+ they were lower and continuously declined (p < 0.05). Investigated materials didn't exhibit dose-dependent effect on metabolic activity of L929 cells (p > 0.05). Significant differences in the percentage of cytotoxicity between diluted and undiluted extracts between all tested materials after 24 h and 7 day were noticed (p < 0.05). Increase in L929 cells proliferation was noticed in case of undiluted eluates of ALBO-MPCA1 and ALBO-MPCA2 after 7 day (p < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in the intensity of inflammatory response between investigated materials and control group after 60 day (p > 0.05). Evaluation of biocompatibility of both ALBO-MPCA1 and ALBO-MPCA2 indicate their potential clinical use.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) have become a lifesaving solution for patients awaiting heart transplantation as well as an option to support the failing hearts of non-transplant candidates as a lifelong, or destination therapy (DT). Improvements in LVAD design have enabled greater durability and broader patient applicability, but not without complications. Ventricular arrhythmias in LVAD patients were considered benign in the early days of LVADs, but today are increasingly recognized for their harmful impact on morbidity and quality of life. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 53-year-old male who underwent HeartWare left ventricular assist device (HVAD) implantation. During the postoperative period, the patient experienced ventricular tachycardia (VT) during a coughing episode, later found on CT to be due to significant angulation of the outflow graft. Following reoperation to shorten the outflow graft, the patient returned to hemodynamic stability, without VT or other arrhythmias. CONCLUSIONS: Innovative strategies in VT prevention and improved clinical outcomes in LVAD patients may be the result of better understanding of characteristics that predispose these patients to VT. This case report showed that an excessively long outflow graft with considerable kinking created significant VT, but reoperation to correct the length of the graft mitigated further VT complications.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence and identify risk factors for the occurrence of intraoperative hypertension (IOH) during surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study included 269 patients surgically treated between January 2008 and January 2012 for pHPT. IOH was defined as an increase in systolic blood pressure ≥20% compared to baseline values which lasted for 15 min. The investigated influence were demographic characteristics, surgical risk score related to physical status (based on the American Society of Anesthesiologists [ASA] classification), comorbidities, type and duration of surgery, and duration of anesthesia on IOH occurrence. The investigated factors were obtained from the patients' medical history, anesthesia charts, and the daily practice database. Logistic regression analysis was done to determine the predictors of IOH. RESULTS: Of the 269 patients, 153 (56.9%) had IOH. Based on the univariate analysis, age, body mass index, ASA status, duration of anesthesia, and preoperative hypertension were risk factors for the occurrence of IOH. Multivariate analysis showed that independent predictors of IOH were a history of hypertension (OR = 2.080, 95% CI: 1.102-3.925, p = 0.024) and age (OR = 0.569, 95% CI: 0.360-0.901, p = 0.016). CONCLUSION: In this study, a high percentage (56%) of the patients developed IOH during surgery for pHPT, which indicates that special attention should be paid to these patients, especially to the high-risk groups: older patients and those with a history of hypertension. Further, this study showed that advanced age and hypertension as a coexisting disease prior to parathyroid surgery were independent risk factors for the occurrence of IOH.

RESUMO

Two groups of benzimidazole derivatives were synthesized using as precursors 5(6)-substituted 2-mercapto-benzimidazol-thiols and their antioxidant activity was investigated using TBA-MDA test. In the group of 1,3-disubstituted-benzimidazol-2-imines the highest lipid peroxidation inhibition effect 74.04% (IC50=141.89 µg/mL) revealed ethyl [3-(2-ethoxy-2-oxoethyl)-2-imino-5-benzoyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzimdazol-1-yl]acetate 12 while in the group of 2-substituted-1,3-thiazolo[3,2-a]benzimidazolones the highest inhibition effect showed 2-(4-fluorobenzylidene)-7-(phenylcarbonyl)[1,3]thiazolo[3,2-a]benzimidazol-3(2H)-one 17 90.76% (IC50=53.70 µg/mL). In order to estimate the capability of the studied benzimidazoles to act as radical scavengers the structure of the most active derivative within the both subseries was optimized at B3LYP/6-311++G(∗∗) level and the respective bond dissociation enthalpies were calculated. The appropriate models for the HAT and SET-mechanism of the antioxidant activity were proposed. The antibacterial activity of the compounds was evaluated against two Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538) and three Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli ATCC 8739, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027 and Salmonella abony NCTC 6017). 1,3-Diphenylpropyl-5-methyl-1,3-dihydro-2H-benzimidazol-2-imine 14 exhibited significant activity against B. subtilis, S. aureus, S. abony and E. coli (with MIC values of 0.125, 0.016, 0.50 and 0.50mg/mL, respectively). The group of thiazolobenzimidazolones did not reveal antibacterial activity against the tested strains.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate efficacy of casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) and casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium fluoride phosphate (CPP-ACFP) containing pastes among individuals with Sjögren's syndrome (SS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty patients were randomised into three groups: CPP-ACP, CPP-ACFP, and 0.05 % NaF to be used two times a day during a 28-day experimental period. Saliva was analysed for flow rate, pH, buffering capacity and mineral concentrations. Dental plaque was examined for pH. Following the formation of artificial carious lesion, participants wore enamel slabs for an in situ remineralisation study. Remineralisation potential was examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopic (EDS) technique. SE microphotographs were subsequently analysed for area, diameter, perimeter, roundness and the number of enamel defects and percentage of tooth surface affected by defects. RESULTS: At the end of the experimental period, a slight increase of salivary pH could have been observed. No differences in mineral composition of saliva were noted. The use of CPP-ACP and CPP-ACFP contributed to a significant rise of plaque pH. Image analysis revealed excessive reduction of defects' dimensions in the three experimental groups, and a decrease of the number of enamel defects in the CPP-ACP and CPP-ACFP groups. The EDS analysis did not show differences in Ca/P, Ca/O and P/O ratios in any of the treatment groups. CONCLUSION: CPP-ACP and CPP-ACFP hold promise as remineralising agents for patients with SS. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Pastes containing CPP-ACP/CPP-ACFP show enhanced remineralisation potential compared with NaF mouthrinse in patients with SS.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity, dental caries, and periodontal disease are major public health problems due to their adverse impact on the growth and development of children. AIM: To examine the association between nutritional status, oral health, and lifestyle habits among schoolchildren in Serbia. DESIGN: This cross-sectional study assessed 422 children and adolescents aged 6-18 years with the following dental indexes analyzed: DMF/dmf (decayed, missed, and filled teeth), plaque index (PI), and gingival index (GI). Depending on their nutritional status, the subjects were categorized, as being 'normal weight,' 'at risk of overweight,' and 'overweight.' Logistic regression was applied to study the association between the dental indexes and independent variables: gender, age, toothbrushing, nutritional status, and lifestyle factors. RESULTS: Being overweight positively correlated with GI, but negatively correlated with the DMF/dmf index among the participants. Multivariate analysis showed a strong association between the weight category and toothbrushing with GI and PI. Overweight children (6-11 years) were less likely to have caries, whereas in older children/adolescents (12-18 years), caries was associated with the intake of sugar-sweetened juices. CONCLUSIONS: Being overweight was found to be significantly associated with a higher probability of developing gingivitis and negatively associated with caries prevalence in Serbian children and adolescents.

RESUMO

Cardiac surgery (CS) with extracorporeal circulation (ECC), induces intense oxidative stress (OS) and systemic inflammatory response (SIR), which may seriously affect postoperative lung function. We aimed to test if high parenteral (200 mg/kg/24 h) daily doses of Vitamin C (VitC), given within 48 h after the beginning of the operation, may reduce the incidence and severity of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) in CS patients. This single-center, prospective, randomized, single-blinded, interventional trial included 150 patients, assigned to control Group A (n = 75) and interventional Group B (n = 75). Group B intraoperatively received one-fourth (i.e., 50 mg/kg) of the planned daily Vit C dose, divided into three equal parts and diluted in 10 mL of normal saline, while Group A received an equal volume of normal saline at the same time frames (i.e., the induction of anesthesia, aortic cross-clamp release, and sternal closure). After 6 h from the first intraoperative dose, the following regimen was applied: Group B: 50 mg/kg, 30 min i.v. infusion of VitC in 50 mL of normal saline, every 6 h, for the next 48 h, and Group A: 30 min i.v. infusion of an equal volume of normal saline every 6 h, for the next 48 h. Modified Kroenke's score was used to determine the incidence and severity of PPCs. The overall incidence of PPCs was 36.7% and was significantly lower in Group B (13.3% vs. 60.0%, p < 0.001). The PPCs severity score was also significantly lower in Group B (1 vs. 3, p < 0.001). In addition, patients from Group B had significantly less damaged lungs, better postoperative renal function, shorter ICU stays, fewer ICU re-admissions, and lower hospital mortality. No VitC-related adverse effects were recorded. High parenteral daily VitC doses given within 48 h after the beginning of CS are safe and effective in reducing the incidence and severity of PPCs. A multicenter RCT is needed to confirm these results.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hypotension is a common adverse effect of IV anaesthetics, especially during the induction of anaesthesia. The aim of our study was to determine the incidence and risk factors for intraoperative hypotension (IOH) in thyroid surgery, as well as to determine whether and to what extent IOH affects the occurrence of postoperative hypotension. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 1252 euthyroid patients, ASA 2 and ASA 3 status (American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status classification), who had thyroid surgery between 2007 and 2011. IOH was defined as a decrease in systolic blood pressure of >20% of baseline values. We studied the influence of demographic characteristics (sex, age, body mass index-BMI), comorbidity, type and duration of surgery, and anaesthesia on the occurrence of IOH. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to determine predictors of occurrence of IOH. RESULTS: IOH was registered in 6.5% of patients. The most common operation was thyroidectomy. Patients with IOH were younger, had lower BMI, and significantly less often had hypertension as a coexisting disease. The multivariate regression model identified BMI and the absence of hypertension as a coexisting disease, and as independent predictors of occurrence of IOH. Significantly more patients with IOH had postoperative hypotension (9.9% vs. 2.4%, p=0.000). CONCLUSIONS: IOH is common, even during operations of short duration and with minimal bleeding. It is necessary to pay special attention to these patients, given that many of these patients remained hypotensive during the postoperative period.

RESUMO

We studied the influence of demographic characteristics, comorbidity, and type and duration of surgery and anesthesia on the occurrence of intraoperative hypertension (IOHTA). Logistic regression analyses were used in order to determine the predictors of occurrence of IOHTA. More than 60% of our patients had IOHTA. Multivariate analysis showed that independent predictors for IOHTA were older age, BMI 25 kg/m(2), and hypertension as a coexisting disease. Hypertension is common during thyroid surgery, and a significant number of patients remained hypertensive during the postoperative period.

RESUMO

Chlorophyll a (Chla) and chlorophyllyde a (Chlida) - a derivative of Chla, have been incorporated in the lipid bilayers of two types of liposomes, small unilamellar vesicles (SUV) and multilamelar vesicles (MLV). The objective of the present work was to compare the spectral behaviour of Chla and Chlida incorporated in the lipid bilayers and their sensing behaviour at molecular level. The VIS absorption and fluorescence emission presented differences depending on the type of liposomes and inserted pigment, reflecting the different localization of porphyrin macrocycle in the lipid moieties. The temperature dependence of emission anisotropy and fluorescence intensity, for both Chla and Chlida incorporated in DPPC SUV, revealed the presence of different lipid phases. The degree of incorporation of quercetin (QCT) in liposome membrane was studied by using Chla and Chlida as molecular sensors. The fluorescence polarisation data and the fluorescence quenching process provided arguments for the insertion of the QCT at the interface lipid/water, in the vicinity of lipid polar heads and porphyrin macrocycle. The phytyl chain of Chla penetrating in the hydrophobic core of the lipid bilayers is responsible for the observed differences among Chla and Chlida in sensing the lipid phase transition and the fluorescence quenching process induced by QCT.

RESUMO

Background: Selection of effective and safe therapy for management of patients with coronavirus disease is challenging. Tocilizumab (TZB) has emerged as a potential treatment option for COVID-19. Several aspects regarding Tocilizumab treatment remain uncertain, such as the optimal timing for its administration and the safety profile, including the potential risk of infections. The aim of the study is to present the clinical characteristics of patients with COVID-19 following the application of Tocilizumab. Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of 121 patients with severe forms of COVID-19 previously treated with Tocilizumab was conducted. All patients were admitted to intensive care units (ICUs). Results: Of 121 patients, the majority were men 72 (59.5%) with a median age at presentation of 65 ± 13 years. Only 9 (7.43%) patients were without comorbidities, while the other 112 (92.55%) had two or more comorbidities. Almost all of the 120 patients (99.2%) needed oxygen therapy, such as nasal cannulas in 110 (90.9%) patients, high flow nasal catheter (HFNC) in 4 (3.3%) patients, and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in 5 (4.1%) patients while 1 patient was intubated at the time of hospital admission. The average time from Tocilizumab application to admission to the ICU was 3 days. During clinical deterioration, almost half 57 (47.1%) of the patients were intubated, and 52 (82.5%) of these intubated patients (p < 0.001) had lethal outcomes. The most significant predictors for a lethal outcome according to multivariate analysis were diabetes mellitus (p < 0.001) followed by a subsequent elevation in C-reactive protein levels (CRP; p < 0.002) and ferritin (p < 0.013) after Tocilizumab application. Bloodstream infections were found in 20 (16.5%) patients, most frequently with Gram-negative pathogens like Acinetobacter spp. as in 12 (18.6%) patients, Klebsiella spp. in 6 (8%) patients, and Pseudomonas spp. in 2 (3.2%) patients. Urine culture isolates were found in 9 (7.43%) patients, with Candida spp. being most frequently isolated in 7 (5.8%) patients, followed by Klebsiella spp. and Pseudomonas spp. in 1 patient each (0.8%). Significantly lower survival was seen in patients with proven infection. Conclusion: The benefit of tocilizumab was not found in our study. The high mortality rate among intubated patients after Tocilizumab use suggests appropriate patient selection and monitoring and emphasizes the risk of superinfections. Diabetes mellitus, increased levels of CRP, and ferritin were identified as the most significant predictors of poor outcomes in contrast to increased levels of IL-6.

Objectives: To identify the involvement of Serbian paediatric dentists in oral health promotion and education, and to propose further actions for the improvement of these activities. Methods: This is an analysis of data collected by a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based survey of 445 dentists involved in the provision of dental health services to children at the primary healthcare level. We explored dentists' involvement in oral health education and promotion and the cooperation with other health professionals at the healthcare centre and the community level as well as their attitudes towards the importance of some factors influencing their work. Results: Dentists estimate their cooperation with different services with ratings higher than 3 on the scale of 1 to 5. They reported the highest satisfaction in cooperation with paediatric services for preschool and schoolchildren (4.0±1.0). At the community level, they reported excellent cooperation with kindergartens (4.4±0.8), while collaboration with Roma health mediators (3.14±1.34) and nongovernmental organizations (2.5±1.4) received lower ratings. According to the average rating (4.7±0.7), dentists perceive the motivation of patients and/or their guardians for keeping good oral health as the factor with the highest importance for the quality of interventions they provide. Conclusions: Dentists involved in the provision of dental healthcare for children and adolescents in primary healthcare centres in Serbia participate in different oral healthcare education and promotion activities in the community, and highlight the importance of strengthening cooperation with healthcare and other professionals and services aimed at vulnerable population groups, both within the health sector and nongovernmental organizations.

RESUMO

Advances in technologies that can record and stimulate deep brain activity in humans have led to impactful discoveries within the field of neuroscience and contributed to the development of novel therapies for neurological and psychiatric disorders. Further progress, however, has been hindered by device limitations in that recording of single-neuron activity during freely moving behaviors in humans has not been possible. Additionally, implantable neurostimulation devices, currently approved for human use, have limited stimulation programmability and restricted full-duplex bidirectional capability. In this study, we developed a wearable bidirectional closed-loop neuromodulation system (Neuro-stack) and used it to record single-neuron and local field potential activity during stationary and ambulatory behavior in humans. Together with a highly flexible and customizable stimulation capability, the Neuro-stack provides an opportunity to investigate the neurophysiological basis of disease, develop improved responsive neuromodulation therapies, explore brain function during naturalistic behaviors in humans and, consequently, bridge decades of neuroscientific findings across species.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Despite advances in the treatment of psychiatric diseases, currently available therapies do not provide sufficient and durable relief for as many as 30-40% of patients. Neuromodulation, including deep brain stimulation (DBS), has emerged as a potential therapy for persistent disabling disease, however it has not yet gained widespread adoption. In 2016, the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (ASSFN) convened a meeting with leaders in the field to discuss a roadmap for the path forward. A follow-up meeting in 2022 aimed to review the current state of the field and to identify critical barriers and milestones for progress. DESIGN: The ASSFN convened a meeting on June 3, 2022 in Atlanta, Georgia and included leaders from the fields of neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry along with colleagues from industry, government, ethics, and law. The goal was to review the current state of the field, assess for advances or setbacks in the interim six years, and suggest a future path forward. The participants focused on five areas of interest: interdisciplinary engagement, regulatory pathways and trial design, disease biomarkers, ethics of psychiatric surgery, and resource allocation/prioritization. The proceedings are summarized here. CONCLUSION: The field of surgical psychiatry has made significant progress since our last expert meeting. Although weakness and threats to the development of novel surgical therapies exist, the identified strengths and opportunities promise to move the field through methodically rigorous and biologically-based approaches. The experts agree that ethics, law, patient engagement, and multidisciplinary teams will be critical to any potential growth in this area.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Traditional lead-based cardiac pacemakers suffer from lead-related complications including lead fracture, lead dislodgement, and venous obstruction. Modern leadless pacemakers mitigate the complications, but since they are implanted inside the heart with a small battery, their limited battery lifetime necessities device replacement within the patient's lifetime. This paper presents a leadless and batteryless, wirelessly powered intravenous cardiac pacemaker that can potentially mitigate both problems. METHODS: Wireless power is transferred at 13.56 MHz in bursts between the pacemaker modules to achieve sufficient power over the required distance for wireless pacing. The pacemaker stimulation module is designed to fit within the anatomical constraints of a cardiac vein, consume low power, apply greater than 5 V stimulation and comply with FCC SAR regulations. The module is primarily implemented in CMOS technology to achieve extreme system miniaturization. RESULTS: Ex-vivo pacing capability was demonstrated with a system that can apply 5 V stimulation, consume 1 mW power, and operate up to 2.5 cm TX and RX separation. An in-vivo experiment verified the pacemaker functionality by increasing the heartbeat of Yorkshire pig from 64 bpm to 100 bpm. CONCLUSION: This work establishes that intravascular cardiac pacing can be achieved that can mitigate lead and battery-related complications. SIGNIFICANCE: This study has a potential to advance leadless and wirelessly powered pacemaker technology.

RESUMO

To enhance endodontics, the search for new antibacterials that can improve infected tooth root canal treatment is ongoing. As potent antibacterial and antibiofilm agents, essential oils (EOs) have been suggested as novel endodontic materials. Several studies indicate that EO-based irrigants and medicaments show promising reductive potential against the most important intracanal pathogen, Enterococcus faecalis, and notably contribute to intracanal biofilm eradication. In terms of additional benefits that EO-based endodontic materials can provide, their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential are also important, but they have only scarcely been explored in research. Investigations into the benefits of EO-based endodontic materials together with their biocompatibility are needed. The results presented in this review strongly encourage further research on this topic.
