RESUMO

Physical parameters of a spectral beam combining (SBC) system for multiple Yb-doped fiber lasers (YDFLs) were identified and numerically analyzed to obtain the optimal beam quality and the combining efficiency. We proposed an optimal range of the parameters that can be utilized in SBC systems. For a practical SBC system composed of a multi-layer dielectric grating and a transform mirror, we systematically varied input laser parameters such as the incident angle, beam diameter, laser linewidth, spectral spacing, number of beams, and their spatial separation. Characteristics of diffracted beams by the SBC system were numerically analyzed using a Fourier modal method (FMM). The beam quality M2 and the combining efficiency, η, were optimized by varying the laser beam parameters. We found that M2 and η were most affected by the angle of incidence and the laser linewidth, respectively. We presented the optimal parameters for three, five, and seven linear beam array SBCs along with a range of allowed parameters that could be used in the laser power scaling.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: WingCap (A&A Medical Supply LLC, Seongnam, South Korea) is a novel distal attachment device for colonoscopy that combines a cap and an existing mucosal exposure device, such as Endocuff Vision (Arc Medical Design Ltd, Leeds, UK) and AmplifEYE (Medivators Inc, Minneapolis, Minn, USA). We aimed to investigate whether WingCap-assisted colonoscopy can improve the adenoma detection rate (ADR) and adenoma per colonoscopy (APC) and simultaneously shorten cecal intubation time compared with standard colonoscopy. METHODS: We conducted a single-center, prospective, randomized controlled trial for outpatients aged ≥18 years undergoing colonoscopy. The primary outcome was ADR differences with the assistance of WingCap. Secondary outcomes were APC and other colonoscopy quality indicators, such as cecal intubation and withdrawal times. RESULTS: In total, 537 patients were randomized for WingCap-assisted or standard colonoscopy. Their mean age was 59.3 years, and 48.5% were men. ADR was significantly higher in the WingCap group than in the control group (37.2% vs 26.6%, P = .012). APC was greater with WingCap than with standard colonoscopy (.72 ± 1.34 vs .45 ± 0.97, P = .008), prominently for nonpedunculated (.65 ± 1.25 vs .42 ± .95, P = .015) and diminutive (.42 ± .94 vs .20 ± .64, P = .002) adenomas. With WingCap, ADR and APC significantly increased for beginner endoscopists, whereas a modest increase was seen for experienced endoscopists. There were no differences in cecal intubation and withdrawal times between the 2 arms. No serious adverse event was associated with the use of WingCap. CONCLUSIONS: WingCap-assisted colonoscopy was tolerable and efficacious for improving ADR and APC compared with standard colonoscopy, especially for nonpedunculated and diminutive adenomas and for beginner endoscopists. RESUMO

We proposed and experimentally demonstrated combining a nonlinear optic saturable absorber and a wideband-tunable spectral filter in a single graphene oxide (GO) film deposited fiber optic device. The GO film was prepared on the cleaved facet of an optical fiber applying two sequential processes: the electrical deposition to make a thick GO film using an arc fusion splicer, followed by the laser pulse drilling to form a multi-layered GO film. The GO deposited fiber facet and a pristine fiber facet formed an asymmetric Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI), whose spectral response was flexibly controlled by adjusting the air gap between them. An all-fiber ring laser cavity was built using the proposed device as a tunable saturable absorber along with erbium-doped fiber as a gain medium in the L-band. Stable Q-switching laser pulse trains were successfully generated, whose pulse duration was in the order of a few microseconds and its peak wavelength was tunable over 40nm from 1564 to 1604nm covering both C-and L-bands. At a certain condition, we also obtained Q-switching pulses simultaneously lasing at the double wavelengths, 1573.3 and 1586.7nm. Detailed device fabrication processes and laser characteristics are described to elucidate the high potential of 2-dimensional material films in nonlinear optics.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) increases the risk of tuberculosis (TB) infection. In the present study, we analyzed the clinical characteristics and risks of TB in Korean patients with IBD who received anti-TNF treatment. METHODS: The study included patients with IBD who were treated using anti-TNF agents between January 2001 and June 2018 at the Asan Medical Center. Overall, 1434 patients with ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease were enrolled. We calculated the incidence of active TB infection after anti-TNF treatment and compared the clinical characteristics of the TB group with those of the non-TB group. RESULTS: Twenty-one patients (1.46%) developed active TB infection, and the incidence rate of active TB was 366.73 per 100,000 person-years. In total, 198 patients (14.9%) were positive for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), of whom only eight (4%) did not complete LTBI treatment. The age at which the anti-TNF therapy was started was significantly higher in the TB group than in the non-TB group (HR 1.041, 95% CI 1.014-1.069, p = 0.002), and as age increased, so did the incidence rate of active TB infection (linearity p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the incidence rate of LTBI between the TB and non-TB groups (HR 0.896, 95% CI 0.262-3.066, p = 0.862). CONCLUSIONS: In patients with IBD, the incidence rate of TB increased with age at anti-TNF therapy initiation. Active treatment of LTBI may lower the incidence of TB in patients with IBD who are to undergo anti-TNF therapy.

RESUMO

The recent development of liquid-phase chemical analyses, drug delivery, and flow cytometry requires precise sensing and control of the liquid flow in a microfluidic chip environment. The channel in microfluidic chips is getting narrower to cope with complex liquid controls on a single chip, where small-footprint sensors and actuators are in urgent demand for accurate flow management. In this study, a unique microscopic bubble-on-fiber (BoF) device that can be readily integrated to current microfluidic chips was proposed and demonstrated for in situ sensing and control of microfluidic flow rate. The single microbubble was optically generated on the gold-deposited facet of an optical fiber by the local heating due to optical absorption. The BoF is a microscopic Fabry-Perot cavity, which serves as a thermal flow sensor precisely detecting the flow-induced temperature changes in the optical frequency domain. Experimentally we achieved the minimum detectable flow rate of ~0.06 mm/s in a single microfluidic channel, which is equivalent to a volume flow rate of 22 nL/s, and a response time of ~6 s. We also demonstrated that the BoF functioned as a microfluidic valve to regulate the flow rate in a Y-shape microfluidic chip by optically varying the bubble diameter. In addition to advantages of highly integrated functionalities and microscopic form factor, the proposed BoF can obviate the usage of chemical tracer such as dyes and can provide a high sensitivity over repeated flow cycles in a highly consistent manner. The BoF is promising for the timely development of high-density lab-on-a-chip devices using its efficient liquid flow management capability.

RESUMO

All-fiber integrated phase shifters and optical switches have important applications in photonic devices, such as optical controlling, optical fiber sensing, and signal processing. In this Letter, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, we integrated the photothermal effect of a nanomaterial based on gold nanorods (GNRs) and a microfiber interferometer to realize a compact all-optical fiber phase shifter. GNRs surrounding the microfiber were excited by near-infrared light via the evanescent interaction, subsequently releasing the heat through the photothermal effect. Then, the refractive index around the microfiber was varied to shift the interference dips in a reversible manner. Experimentally, a spectral shift efficiency of 0.16 nm/mW near the wavelength of 1550 nm was obtained using an excitation laser at the wavelength of 808 nm. The device also provided an all-optical switching with the modulation depth of 76.4%. The proposed GNR-based all-fiber device can provide high potentials in all-optical signal control applications.

RESUMO

With the rapid advancement of Yb-doped fiber lasers (YDFL) whose output wavelength is near 1060 nm, passive fibers to carry the high optical power at the spectral range are also gaining significant importance. Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in the passive fibers connecting components in the lasers, especially, can set a fundamental limit in the power handling of YDFL systems. We experimentally analyzed SBS characteristics of passive single mode fibers (SMF) at a wavelength of 1060 nm. For two types of SMFs (Corning HI1060 and HI1060Flex), the Brillouin frequency (νΒ), its linewidth (ΔνΒ), and their variations with respect to the input laser power and the surrounding temperature were experimentally measured, along with the SBS threshold power (Pth). The optical heterodyne detection method was used to identify temperature-dependent SBS characteristics of fibers, and we found SMFs at λ = 1060 nm showed a temperature sensitivity in SBS frequency shift more than 40% higher than in conventional SMFs operating in C-band. Detailed procedures to measure the SBS properties are explained, and a new potential of 1060 nm SMF as a distributed temperature sensor is also discussed.

RESUMO

Diode-pumped alkali-atom laser (DPAL) has attracted intense attention due to its inherently high quantum efficiency, a good beam quality, and a high potential in the power scaling. However, most of DPAL research has been confined to the continuous wave and only a few pulsed operations have been attempted with limited performances. Here, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a new scheme using a fast mode-hopping in the pump laser diode (LD), which enabled the quasi-continuous-wave (QCW) pulse modulation in a cesium (Cs) DPAL to control both the pulse width and the repetition rate. The pump wavelength was efficiently modulated in a fast cycle within discrete spectral ranges provided by the mode-hopping in the pump LD. The spectral range was successfully adjusted to include the resonant D2 absorption line of Cs atom to result in an effective gain modulation. Using this proposed scheme, we successfully achieved Cs-DPAL QCW modulation, whose pulse width was varied from tens of microseconds to a few milliseconds and the repetition rate was also variable in a wide frequency range from 10 Hz to 7.0 kHz. Detailed pump modulation method and the corresponding laser characteristics are discussed. The proposed method can be readily applied to pulse modulation of other types of alkali vapor lasers overcoming the previous limitations of DPAL to further expand applications in various light-matter interactions.

RESUMO

Long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) are useful for environmental sensing under conditions of high corrosiveness and electromagnetic interference. Most LPFGs are fabricated by coherent or high-power UV illumination of an optical fiber under an amplitude mask, resulting in narrow and environmentally-dependent band rejection. We present a hybrid LPFG waveguide fabricated without an amplitude mask through polymer self-assembly under low-power incoherent UV illumination, which demonstrates high-temperature sensitivity in its transmission spectrum compared to LPFG sensors based purely on silica waveguides. A sensitivity of 1.5 nm °C -1 is obtained experimentally for attenuation near 1180 nm, and a sensitivity of 4.5 nm °C -1 with a low random error was obtained with a composite of attenuation bands. Finite element method simulations and coupling mode theory reveal this to be due to a thermo-optic coefficient one order of magnitude greater than that of fused silica. The device has potential for a simple and inexpensive transmission intensity based temperature sensor consisting of an infrared light source, the LPFG, a bandpass filter, and a photodiode.

RESUMO

A new type of tunable broadband fiber-optic acousto-optic sensor was experimentally demonstrated by utilizing a bubble-on-fiber (BoF) interferometer. A single micro-bubble was generated by injecting a heating laser at λ = 980 nm on the metalized facet of an optical fiber. The BoF formed a spherical micro-cavity in water whose acoustic deformation was precisely detected by using a narrowband DFB laser at 1550 nm. The heating light and the interrogating light were fed into a single fiber probe by wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) realizing a small footprint all-fiber configuration. The diameter of the BoF was stabilized with a variation less than 0.5 nm by fast servo-control of the heating laser power. The stabilized BoF served as a Fabry-Pérot cavity that can be deformed by acoustic perturbation, and a minimum detectable pressure level of as low as ~1 mPa/Hz1/2 was achieved in a frequency range of over 60 kHz in water at room temperature. Our proposed BoF technology can provide a tunable, flexible and all-fiber solution to detect minute acoustically driven perturbations combining high-precision interferometry. Due to the very small form-factor, the technique can find applications of liquid-immersible in situ measurements in bio-molecular/cell detection and biochemical phenomena study.

RESUMO

We experimentally demonstrated a green liquid laser at the wavelength of 570 nm, utilizing the optical gain of vitamin B2 in a highly polar organic solvent, and proposed an efficient method to enhance its lasing efficiency by adding DNA-lipid complex (DNA-CTMA) in the solution. Optical properties of vitamin B2 in the hexafluoro-2-propanol solvents were investigated by adding various amounts of DNA-CTMA in terms of the UV-visible absorbance, the visible emission, and the fluorescence lifetime. A Fabry-Perot cavity was built to obtain the laser oscillation at 570 nm using a pulsed pump source at the wavelength of 450 nm, 5 ns pulse duration, and 10 Hz repetition rate. By adding DNA-CTMA, both the output power and slope efficiency were enhanced along with a significant reduction of the lasing threshold pump power. The proposed scheme could open new potential for highly efficient biolasers.

RESUMO

We proposed and experimentally demonstrated 3-dimensional dark traps for low refractive index bio-cells using a single optical fiber Bessel beam. The Bessel beam was produced by concatenating single-mode fiber and a step index multimode fiber, which was then focused by a high refractive index glass microsphere integrated on the fiber end facet. The focused Bessel beam provided two dark fields along the axial direction, where stable trapping of low refractive index bio-cells was realized in a high refractive index liquid bath. The all-fiber and seamlessly integrated structure of the proposed scheme can find ample potential as a micro-optical probe in in situ characterization and manipulation of multiple bio-cells with refractive indices lower than that of the liquid bath.

RESUMO

We investigated an outbreak of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) O159:H20 associated with the consumption of a tossed-noodle dish in a high school in 2016. Thirty-three ETEC strains isolated from clinical and food samples were genetically indistinguishable. The outbreak strains were resistant to third-generation cephalosporins and harbored a blaCTX-M-15 gene on a 97-kb self-transferable IncK plasmid. This is the first outbreak caused by CTX-M-15-producing ETEC strains.

RESUMO

We report a new efficient light guidance along a liquid core using an open V-groove. Guiding properties were analyzed using finite element method in terms of the single mode guidance condition, and the corresponding modal birefringence. We experimentally demonstrated a silica V-groove fiber with an opening angle of 40°, which was spliced to single mode fibers at both ends. A liquid with the refractive index of 1.455 was filled to serve as a core along a maximum length of 47cm. We confirmed the single mode guidance and birefringence consistent to theory, which will enable polarimetric liquid sensing.

RESUMO

Photon anti-bunching, measured via the Hanbury-Brown-Twiss experiment, is one of the key signatures of quantum light and is tied to sub-Poissonian photon number statistics. Recently, it has been reported that photon anti-bunching or conditional sub-Poissonian photon number statistics can be obtained via second-order interference of mutually incoherent weak lasers and heralding based on photon counting [Phys. Rev. A92, 033855 (2015)10.1103/PhysRevA.92.033855; Opt. Express24, 19574 (2016)10.1364/OE.24.019574; https://arxiv.org/abs/1601.08161]. Here, we report theoretical analysis on the limits of manipulating conditional photon statistics via interference of weak lasers. It is shown that conditional photon number statistics can become super-Poissonian in such a scheme. We, however, demonstrate explicitly that it cannot become sub-Poissonian, i.e., photon anti-bunching cannot be obtained in such a scheme. We point out that incorrect results can be obtained if one does not properly account for seemingly negligible higher-order photon number expansions of the coherent state.

RESUMO

We report an investigation on quantum discord in classical second-order interference. In particular, we theoretically show that a bipartite state with D = 0.311 of discord can be generated via classical second-order interference. We also experimentally verify the theory by obtaining D = 0.197 ± 0.060 of non-zero discord state. Together with the fact that the nonclassicalities originated from physical constraints and information theoretic perspectives are not equivalent, this result provides an insight to understand the nature of quantum discord.

RESUMO

We report unique thermo-optical characteristics of DNA-Cetyl tri-methyl ammonium (DNA-CTMA) thin solid film with a large negative thermo-optical coefficient of -3.4×10-4/°C in the temperature range from 20°C to 70°C without any observable thermal hysteresis. By combining this thermo-optic DNA film and fiber optic multimode interference (MMI) device, we experimentally demonstrated a highly sensitive compact temperature sensor with a large spectral shift of 0.15 nm/°C. The fiber optic MMI device was a concatenated structure with single-mode fiber (SMF)-coreless silica fiber (CSF)-single mode fiber (SMF) and the DNA-CTMA film was deposited on the CSF. The spectral shifts of the device in experiments were compared with the beam propagation method, which showed a good agreement.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Two outbreaks of gastroenteritis occurred in South Korea, affecting a middle school in the Jeollanam-do province in 2013 (Outbreak 1) and 10 schools in the Incheon province in 2014 (Outbreak 2). We investigated the outbreaks to identify the pathogen and mode of transmission. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in the Outbreak 1; and case-control studies were performed for the Outbreak 2. Samples from students, environments, and preserved food items were collected and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was conducted to identify strains of pathogen. RESULTS: We identified 167 and 1022 students who met the case definition (≥3 loose stools in any 24-h period) in the Outbreaks 1 and 2, respectively. The consumption of cabbage kimchi and young radish kimchi were significantly associated with the illness. Adjusted odds ratios of kimchi were 2.62-11.74. In the Outbreak 1, cabbage kimchi was made and consumed in the school restaurant and in the Outbreak 2, young radish kimchi was supplied by food company X and distributed to all the 10 schools in the Incheon province. Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) O6 was isolated from fecal samples in 375 cases (33.9%) and from kimchi samples. PFGE patterns of the outbreak strains isolated from cases and food were indistinguishable in each outbreak. CONCLUSION: The suspected food vehicle in these two consecutive outbreaks was kimchi contaminated with ETEC O6. We recommend continued monitoring and stricter sanitation requirements for the food supply process in Korea, especially in relation to kimchi.

RESUMO

Dual resonant bands in UV and the visible range were simultaneously observed in the enhanced optical transmission (EOT) through star-shaped plasmonic structures. EOTs through four types of polygonal bull's eyes with a star aperture surrounded by the concentric star grooves were analyzed and compared for 3, 4, 5, and 6 corners, using finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. In contrast to plasmonic resonances in the visible range, the UV-band resonance intensity was found to scale with the number of corners, which is related with higher order multipole interactions. Spectral positions and relative intensities of the dual resonances were analyzed parametrically to find optimal conditions to maximize EOT in UV-visible dual bands.

RESUMO

We experimentally demonstrated supercontinuum generation through a hollow core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBGF) filled with DNA nanocrystals modified by copper ions in a solution. Both double-crossover nano DNA structure and copper-ion-modified structure provided a sufficiently high optical nonlinearity within a short length of hollow optical fiber. Adding a higher concentration of copper ion into the DNA nanocrystals, the bandwidth of supercontinuum output was monotonically increased. Finally, we achieved the bandwidth expansion of about 1000 nm to be sufficient for broadband multi-spectrum applications.
