RESUMO

In a light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC), electrochemical doping caused by mobile ions facilitates bipolar charge injection and recombination emissions for a high electroluminescence (EL) intensity at low driving voltages. We present the development of a nanogap LEC (i.e., nano-LEC) comprising a light-emitting polymer (F8BT) and an ionic liquid deposited on a gold nanogap electrode. The device demonstrated a high EL intensity at a wavelength of 540 nm corresponding to the emission peak of F8BT and a threshold voltage of ∼2 V at 300 K. Upon application of a constant voltage, the device demonstrated a gradual increase in current intensity followed by light emission. Notably, the delayed components of the current and EL were strongly suppressed at low temperatures (<285 K). The results clearly indicate that the device functions as an LEC and that the nano-LEC is a promising approach to realizing molecular-scale current-induced light sources.

RESUMO

D-band (110-170 GHz) antenna-coupled optical modulators with electro-optic (EO) polymer waveguides and non-coplanar patch antennas were fabricated using a poled EO polymer film transfer method. A carrier-to-sideband ratio (CSR) of 42.3 dB corresponding to an optical phase shift of 15.3 mrad was obtained by irradiating 150 GHz electromagnetic waves with an irradiation power density of 34.3 W/m2. Our devices and fabrication method have great potential for achieving highly efficient wireless-to-optical signal conversion in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems.

RESUMO

THz waves are promising wireless carriers for next-generation wireless communications, where a seamless connection from wireless to optical communication is required. In this study, we demonstrate carrier conversion from THz waves to dual-wavelength NIR light injection-locking to an optical frequency comb using asynchronous nonpolarimetric electro-optic downconversion with an electro-optic polymer modulator. THz wave in the W band was detected as a stable photonic RF beat signal of 1 GHz with a signal-to-noise ratio of 20 dB via the proposed THz-to-NIR carrier conversion. In addition, the results imply the potential of the photonic detection of THz waves for wireless-to-optical seamless communication.

RESUMO

Chip-scale optical devices operated at wavelengths shorter than communication wavelengths, such as LiDAR for autonomous driving, bio-sensing, and quantum computation, have been developed in the field of photonics. In data processing involving optical devices, modulators are indispensable for the conversion of electronic signals into optical signals. However, existing modulators have a high half-wave voltage-length product (VπL) which is not sufficient at wavelengths below 1000 nm. Herein, we developed a significantly efficient optical modulator which has low VπL of 0.52 V·cm at λ = 640 nm using an electro-optic (EO) polymer, with a high glass transition temperature (Tg = 164 °C) and low optical absorption loss (2.6 dB/cm) at λ = 640 nm. This modulator is not only more efficient than any EO-polymer modulator reported thus far, but can also enable ultra-high-speed data communication and light manipulation for optical platforms operating in the ranges of visible and below 1000 nm infrared.

RESUMO

In this study, W-band (75-110 GHz) antenna-coupled optical modulators with a cyclo-olefin polymer (COP) lower cladding, an electro-optic (EO) polymer waveguide, and a gap-embedded patch antenna array were fabricated using a transfer and bonding method of a poled EO polymer film. A carrier-to-sideband ratio (CSR) of 56 dB corresponding to an optical phase shift of 3 mrad was obtained under irradiation with 100 GHz electromagnetic waves with a power of 12.8 W/m2. Our devices have the potential to achieve highly efficient wireless-optical signal conversion in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems.

RESUMO

We fabricated terahertz (THz) wave generation devices using electro-optic (EO) polymer slab waveguides and cyclo-olefin polymer (COP) clads with very small absorption loss of the THz waves based on a novel device fabrication procedure involving bonding of the poled EO polymer layer to the COP substrates. We demonstrated THz wave generation from the EO polymer slab devices using a 1.55 µm-band femtosecond fiber laser and evaluated the THz wave generation properties of the devices. Our results will lead to the development of compact, highly efficient, and ultrabroadband THz devices using EO polymers.

RESUMO

Electrically tunable metasurfaces have gained special interest as they can realize ultrathin surface-normal modulators in planar geometries. In this paper, we demonstrate a novel metasurface modulator based on electro-optic (EO) polymer that utilizes bimodal resonance inside a metallic subwavelength grating to increase the modulation efficiency. When two metal-insulator-metal (MIM) resonant modes are excited simultaneously inside the grating, they couple strongly to generate a sharp dip in the reflected spectrum. As a result, efficient intensity modulation with 15-dB extinction ratio can be obtained at the resonant wavelength under a small refractive index change of 8.5 × 10-3, corresponding to modulation voltage of less than 10 V. Due to the low parasitic capacitance of EO polymer and high conductivity of metallic gratings which is also used as the electrodes, the RC bandwidth of the device should easily exceed 100 GHz, potentially applicable to high-speed surface-normal modulators.

RESUMO

We analyzed two types of Mach-Zehnder plasmonic modulators on a silicon-on-insulator platform with a different furan-thiophene chromophore electro-optic polymer to compare to other reports. The metal-taper coupling structure and the metal-insulator-metal cross section in our design have been optimized based on the new material parameters. According to the simulation result, a modulator with a slot width of 50 nm and an on-off voltage of Vπ=20 V can be 21 µm long, leading to a total modulator loss of 15 dB, which is comparable to previously reported devices.

RESUMO

Erbium-doped organic emitters are promising active materials for Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) due to their emission shown at 1550 nm combined to the potential low cost processing. In particular, Erbium Quinoline (ErQ) gained a strong interest in the last decade for the good emission efficiency. This contribution reports the results derived from the application of ErQ as active core material within a buried optical waveguide, following the development of a purposed optical process to control the refractive index of ErQ and then to define a patterned structure from a single thin film deposition step. The reported results show the potential of Er-doped organic materials for low cost processing and application to planar PICs.

RESUMO

We developed a new patterning method for bacteriorhodopsin (bR) thin films using UV light irradiation. The proton pump function of bR thin films can be deactivated with UV light irradiation. Inactivation of the proton pump function of bR is related to structural changes or photo-bleaching of the retinal in bR using UV light exposure, which was confirmed with absorption and Raman spectroscopy measurements. Utilizing inactivation of the proton pump function with UV light irradiation, we prepared a bR photocell with a stripe-patterned bR thin film and measured its photocurrent response. The new patterning method is applicable to complicated patterning and patterning with a higher spatial resolution, which extends the application of bR thin films as sensor devices.

RESUMO

We fabricated a grating-structured electrode made of indium-doped zinc oxide (IZO) with a high refractive index (approximately 2) for a bacteriorhodopsin (bR) photocell. We investigated the photocurrent characteristics of the bR photocell and demonstrated that the photocurrent values from the bR/IZO electrode with the grating structure with a grating period of 340 nm were more than 3.5-4 times larger than those without the grating structure. The photocurrent enhancement was attributed to the resonance effect due to light coupling to the grating structure as well as the scattering effect based on the experimental results and analysis using the photonic band structure determined using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. The refractive index of the bR film in electrolyte solution (1.40) used in the FDTD simulations was estimated by analyzing the extinction peak wavelength of 20-nm gold colloids in the bR film. Our results indicate that the grating- or photonic-crystal-structured transparent conductive oxide (TCO) electrodes can increase the light use efficiency of various bR devices such as artificial photosynthetic devices, solar cells, and light-sensing devices.

RESUMO

In this work, an electro-optic (EO) ring resonator modulator was designed and fabricated in a waveguide consisting of a titanium dioxide (TiO)2 core, silicon dioxide (SiO2) buffer layer, EO polymer claddings, and electrodes. By optimizing the thickness of the TiO2 and SiO2layers, the modulator could satisfy the single-mode requirement; furthermore 52.5% TM mode was confined in the active EO polymer layers. The designed modulator could also pole the EO polymer effectively regardless of its resistivity. Therefore, the EO modulator was observed to show a high resonance wavelength shift of 2.25 × 10(-2) nm/V. The intensity modulation at 1550 nm showed a Vp-p = 1.9 V for a 3dB distinction ratio.

RESUMO

We have established a new platform to control the rate of spontaneous emission (SE) of organic molecules in the visible-light region using a combination of a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal (PC) slab made of TiO(2) and a single-molecule measurement method. The SE from single molecules of a perylenediimide derivative was effectively inhibited via a radiation field controlled by the 2D PC slab, which has a photonic band gap (PBG) for transverse-electric (TE)-polarized light. The fluorescence lifetimes of the single molecules were extended up to 5.5 times (28.6 ns) by the PBG effect. This result appears to be the first demonstration of drastic lifetime elongation for single molecules due to a PBG effect.

RESUMO

A transmission ellipsometric method has been reformed without a spatial filtering aperture to characterize electro-optic (EO) performance of EO polymers. This method affords much simpler optical setup compared to the reflection method, and lets us easily perform detailed incident angle dependence measurements using a conventional glass substrate and an un-collimated beam. It is demonstrated that the reliable characterization with this method is possible in combination with a simple data analysis. By using the recently matured deposition technique of indium zinc oxide (IZO) on soft materials, it is possible to prepare the EO polymer sandwiched between two transparent electrodes. Thus the transmission method should be re-evaluated.

RESUMO

Strongly anisotropic particles with hyperbolic dispersion that are small compared with the wavelength show strong resonance in the near infrared. The unique resonance modes are insensitive to the host refractive index and independent of particle size. In addition, the far-field direction of scattering does not depend on incident angle. Because the strength of resonance is comparable to a plasmonic nanoparticle in the visible region, a hyperbolic-dispersed particle is a promising scatterer as well as local heater in the near infrared.

RESUMO

Biomimetic visual sensors utilizing bacteriorhodopsin (bR) were fabricated by using an inkjet method. The inkjet printer facilitated the jetting of the bR suspension, allowing for the deposition of bR films. The resulting inkjet-printed bR film exhibited time-differential photocurrent response characteristics similar to those of a dip-coated bR film. By adjusting the number of printed bR film layers, the intensity of the photocurrent could be easily controlled. Moreover, the inkjet printing technique enabled unconstrained patterning, facilitating the design of various visual information processing functions, such as visual filters. In this study, we successfully fabricated two visual filters, namely, a two-dimensional Difference of Gaussian (DOG) filter and a Gabor filter. The printed DOG filter demonstrated edge detection capabilities corresponding to contour recognition in visual receptive fields. On the other hand, the printed Gabor filter proved effective in detecting objects of specific sizes as well as their motion and orientation. The integration of bR and the inkjet method holds significant potential for the widespread implementation of highly functional biomaterial-based visual sensors. These sensors have the capability to provide real-time visual information while operating in an energy-efficient manner.

RESUMO

A two-dimensional tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) photonic crystal (PC) slab with low-background emission was fabricated and a 12-fold enhancement of fluorescence from the organic dyes of perylene diimide adsorbed on the surface of the PCs was observed. The background emissions of the Ta2O5 substrates with and without the PCs after thermal annealing at 600°C with oxygen gas were comparable to that of a well-cleaned cover glass. This is to date the lowest level of background emissions of two-dimensional PCs using materials with a high refractive index (>2). The results reported here provide new insights into the fabrication of the photonic devices that enable highly sensitive fluorescence microscopy or optical detections.

RESUMO

Diffraction gratings that can be used to convert the Hermite-Laguerre-Gaussian (HLG) mode into the Gaussian mode were obtained; these modes are space modes of light beams. The HLG mode is intermediate between the Hermite-Gaussian and the Laguerre-Gaussian modes. Generally, gratings produced from interfering two beams as holograms contain information of not only the phase modulation factor but also the amplitude modulation factor. Thus, they cannot be expected to provide high conversion efficiency. To produce high-efficiency gratings, the interference equation is divided into two factors. The gratings produced by considering only the phase factors act as phase converters.

RESUMO

The realization of high-quality quantum emitters that can operate at room temperature is important for accelerating the application of quantum technologies, such as quantum communication, quantum information processing, and quantum metrology. In this work, we study the photon-antibunching properties on room-temperature emission from individual colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) using superconducting-nanowire single-photon detectors and temporal filtering of the photoluminescence decay curve. We find that high single-photon purities and high photon-generation rates can be simultaneously achieved by removing the signals originating from the sequential two-photon emission of biexcitons created by multiple excitation pulses. We successfully demonstrate that the ultrahigh performance of the room-temperature single-photon sources showing g(2)(0) ≪ 10-2 can be confirmed by the ultralow-dark-count detection of the temporally purified single photons. These findings provide strong evidence for the attractiveness of CQDs as candidates for high-quality room-temperature quantum light sources.

RESUMO

We demonstrate the fabrication of a low-loss single-crystalline Ag nanostructure deposited on transparent substrates. Our approach is based on an epitaxial growth technique in which a NaCl(001) substrate is used. The NaCl substrate is dissolved in water to allow the Ag film to be transferred onto the desired substrates. Focused ion beam milling is subsequently employed to pattern a nanoarray structure consisting of 200 nanorods. The epitaxial Ag films with nanoarray structures grown in the study exhibited very flat and smooth surfaces having excellent crystallinity and local misorientation of less than 1°. Further, spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements indicated that the imaginary part of the dielectric constant of the single-crystalline film was smaller than that of a conventional polycrystalline film. Moreover, we used the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method to analyze the plasmonic properties of the nanoarray structure by considering the actual processed structure. Characteristically, when the SiO2 substrate was etched by ion beam milling to a depth of 30 nm, the spectrum showed a spectral shape 20% sharper than that of the substrate with no etching (depth: 0 nm). The plasmonic performance of the single-crystalline Ag nanostructure was largely determined by its structural precision and the dielectric properties of the metal.
