RESUMO

We experimentally demonstrate a means to selectively enhance wavelength conversion of WDM channels on a 100 GHz grid exploiting nonlinear effects between the spatial modes of a few mode fiber. The selectivity of parametric gain is obtained by dispersion design of the fiber such that the inverse group velocity curves of the participating modes are parallel and their dispersion is suitably large. We describe both theoretically and experimentally the observed dependence of the idler gain profile on pump mode (quasi) degeneracy.

RESUMO

A distributed optical fiber dynamic strain sensor also known as a distributed acoustic sensor (DAS) based on two-mode fiber is demonstrated. By using φ-OTDR interrogation technique, the backscattered light from higher order modes can be used to fully quantify vibrations along the sensing fiber. In addition, by combining the results obtained from different modes, 2.52dB improvement in noise floor is achieved. These results confirm that few-mode fibers can be used for DAS applications.

RESUMO

The sensitivity of a sensor to strain or the temperature variations due to distributed Brillouin scattering are partially related to the type of fibers used and the Brillouin scattering induced effective index. In this paper, a highly nonlinear fiber that can generate a higher Brillouin scattering signal is compared to a standard single mode fiber in a short-time-Fourier-transform Brillouin optical time domain reflectometer (STFT-BOTDR). The results show that much higher signal to noise ratios of the Brillouin scattering spectrum and smaller frequency uncertainties in the sensing measurement can be achieved in the highly nonlinear fiber for comparable launched powers. With a measurement speed of 4 Hz, the frequency uncertainty can be 0.43 MHz, corresponding to 10 µÎµ in strain or 0.43°C in temperature uncertainty for the highly nonlinear fiber. In contrast, for the standard single mode fiber case, the value would increase to about 1.02 MHz (25 µÎµ or 1.02°C), demonstrating the advantage of the highly nonlinear fiber for distributed strain/temperature sensing.

RESUMO

We demonstrate four wave mixing (FWM) based wavelength conversion of 40 Gbaud differential phase shift keyed (DPSK) and quadrature phase shift keyed (QPSK) signals in a 2.5 cm long silicon germanium waveguide. For a 290 mW pump power, bit error ratio (BER) measurements show approximately a 2-dB power penalty in both cases of DPSK (measured at a BER of 10(-9)) and QPSK (at a BER of 10(-3)) signals that we examined.

RESUMO

We propose and experimentally study the passive coherent optical addition of complex modulation format signals through the use of a delay line interferometer followed by a temporal gate to increase the encoded bits per symbol and consequently, the spectral efficiency of an incident signal. Modulation format conversion and packet compression are demonstrated as two possible application examples. A variety of modulation formats can be accommodated, whereas higher compression factors can be achieved through the use of a cascade of delay line interferometers.

RESUMO

We experimentally demonstrate phase regeneration of a 40-Gb/s differential phase shift keying (DPSK) signal in a 1.7-m long highly nonlinear lead silicate W-type fiber using a degenerate two-pump phase-sensitive amplifier (PSA). Results show an improvement in the Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) and a reduction of almost a factor of 2 in the phase noise of the signal after regeneration for various noise levels at the input.

RESUMO

We propose and experimentally demonstrate phase-regenerative wavelength conversion in periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides, using either: a single-stage implementation based on a simultaneous combination of two cascaded second-order nonlinear effects in a single periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide, or a two-stage implementation where two separate devices are used in sequence to give rise to the same nonlinear effects. The phase regeneration properties of the proposed wavelength conversion schemes are also investigated.

RESUMO

We propose and demonstrate error-free conversion of a 40 Gbit/s optical time division multiplexed signal to 4 x 10 Gbit/s wavelength division multiplexed channels based on cascaded second harmonic and difference frequency generation in a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide. The technique relies on the generation of spectrally (and temporally) flat linearly chirped pulses which are then optically switched with short data pulses in the nonlinear waveguide. Error-free operation was obtained for all channels with a power penalty below 2dB.

RESUMO

We experimentally demonstrate a single-pumped, non-degenerate phase-sensitive parametric amplifier with a precise control of phase and amplitude of the in-going waves and investigate in detail its gain, attenuation and saturation properties in comparison with operation in phase insensitive amplifier (PIA) mode. We experimentally observe the variation of the gain and attenuation as a function of the relative phase, pump power and the signal-idler power ratio. The phase sensitive gain spectrum is studied over a 24 nm symmetrical bandwidth and we achieve a maximum phase sensitive amplification (PSA) gain of 33 dB. A departure from the theoretical maximum attenuation as the gain increases is observed and explained.

RESUMO

We report the design, fabrication and characterization of a lead-silicate glass highly nonlinear W-type fiber with a flattened and near-zero dispersion profile in the 1.55 microm region. The fiber was composed of three types of commercial lead silicate glasses. Effectively single-mode guidance was observed in the fiber at 1550 nm. The nonlinear coefficient and the propagation loss at this wavelength were measured to be 820 W(-1)km(-1) and 2.1 dB/m, respectively. Investigations of the Brillouin threshold revealed no evidence of stimulated Brillouin scattering for continuous wave signal powers up to 29 dBm in a 2m sample of the fiber. A broadband dispersion measurement confirmed the near-zero dispersion values and the flat dispersion profile around 1550 nm, in good agreement with our simulations. Efficient four-wave-mixing, tunable across the whole C-band, was demonstrated in a 2.2m length of the fiber.

RESUMO

The aim of the project was to educate nursing staff on patient handling techniques to prevent low back pain. Within the framework of a multidisciplinary preventive intervention, a pre-post study design was implemented in a hospital. One hundred and forty nurses and healthcare assistants attended a two-hour lesson and a three-hour practical training session; 48 nurses attended a train-the-trainer programme that was comprised of three-hour classes, two-hour lessons on communication techniques and four hours of practical training. Improvements were tested using questionnaires and direct observations. A statistically significant improvement was noted in questionnaire scores (p<0.001) and handling techniques (p<0.001); use of equipment and low back symptoms improved remarkably. The train-the-trainer programme improved knowledge, communication skills and ability to evaluate manual handling techniques; this allowed the education programme in patient-handling techniques to be extended to all healthcare workers. This approach was effective in increasing the knowledge, practical abilities and communication skills of the workforce. It also allowed a network of internal trainer nurses to be set up, who enabled the implementation of safer and healthier working techniques in nursing staff.

RESUMO

We report the fabrication of an all-solid highly nonlinear microstructured optical fiber. The structured preform was made by glass extrusion using two types of commercial lead silicate glasses that provide high index-contrast. Effectively single-moded guidance was observed in the fiber at 1.55 microm. The effective nonlinearity and the propagation loss at this wavelength were measured to be 120 W(-1)km(-1) and 0.8 dB/m, respectively. Numerical simulations indicate that the fiber is dispersion-shifted with a zero-dispersion-wavelength of 1475 nm and a dispersion slope of 0.16 ps/nm(2)/km respectively at 1.55 microm. These predictions are consistent with the experimentally determined dispersion of + 12.5 ps/nm/km at 1.55 microm. Tunable and efficient four-wave-mixing based wavelength conversion was demonstrated at wavelengths around 1.55 microm using a 1.5m-length of the fiber.

RESUMO

We propose and demonstrate phase-sensitive amplification based on cascaded second harmonic generation and difference frequency generation within a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide. Excellent agreement between our numerical simulations and proof-of-principle experiments using a 3-cm waveguide device operating at wavelengths around 1550 nm is obtained. Our experiments confirm the validity and practicality of the approach and illustrate the broad gain bandwidths achievable. Additional simulation results show that the maximum gain/attenuation factor increases quadratically with input pump power, reaching a value of +/- 19.0 dB at input pump powers of 33 dBm for a 3 cm-long waveguide. Increased gains/reduced powers for a fixed gain could be achieved using longer crystals.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A multidisciplinary intervention is necessary to tackle the occupational risk of low back disorders in manual handling ofpatients and to evaluate the effectiveness. METHODS: An intervention was carried out which included risk assessment, testing and purchasing of patient handling devices, training programmes, health surveillance and collection of quantitative and qualitative outcomes to evaluate effectiveness, in a before-after design. RESULTS: The intervention was effective in reducing exposures, increasing knowledge and skills in patient-handling techniques, decreasing low back pain prevalence and injuries related to patient handling; absenteeism seemed to show a decreasing trend. CONCLUSIONS: The multidisciplinary approach was useful in the overall management of low back pain in health care workers performing patient handling.

RESUMO

We show analytically and numerically that parabolic pulses and similaritons are not always synonyms and that a self-phase modulation amplification regime can precede the self-similar evolution. The properties of the recompressed pulses after SPM amplification are investigated. We also demonstrate that negatively chirped parabolic pulses can exhibit a spectral recompression during amplification leading to high-power chirp-free parabolic pulses at the amplifier output.

RESUMO

We report the use of a 2-m-long Bismuth Oxide fiber with an ultra-high nonlinearity of ~1100 W(-1)km(-1) in a simple 2R regeneration experiment based on self phase modulation and offset filtering. Numerical simulations and experimental results confirm the suitability of this kind of fiber for 2R regeneration. An improvement in receiver sensitivity of more than 5 dB at 10 Gb/s and 2 dB at 40 Gb/s is achieved.

RESUMO

We propose a new method for generating flat self-phase modulation (SPM)-broadened spectra based on seeding a highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) with chirp-free parabolic pulses generated using linear pulse shaping in a superstructured fiber Bragg grating (SSFBG). We show that the use of grating reshaped parabolic pulses allows substantially better performance in terms of the extent of SPM-based spectral broadening and flatness relative to conventional hyperbolic secant (sech) pulses. We demonstrate both numerically and experimentally the generation of SPM-broadened pulses centred at 1542 nm with 92% of the pulse energy remaining within the 29 nm 3 dB spectral bandwidth. Applications in spectra slicing and pulse compression are demonstrated.
