BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant public health concern, and patient self-management is an effective approach to manage the condition. Mobile applications have been used as tools to assist in improving patient self-management, but their effectiveness in long-term outpatient follow-up management of patients with CKD remains to be validated. This study aimed to investigate whether using a mobile application combined with traditional outpatient follow-up can improve health outcomes of patients with CKD . METHODS: This retrospective cohort study recruited CKD patients with stage 1-5 who were not receiving renal replacement therapy from a CKD management center. Two groups were established: the APP + outpatient follow-up group and the traditional outpatient follow-up group. Baseline data was collected from January 2015 to December 2019, followed by a three-year long-term follow-up until December 2022. Laboratory data, all-cause mortality, and renal replacement treatment were then collected and compared between the two groups. RESULTS: 5326 patients were included in the study, including 2492 in the APP + outpatient group and 2834 in the traditional outpatient group. After IPTW virtualization matching, the final matched the APP + outpatient group consisted of 2489 cases (IQR, 33-55) and 2850 (IQR, 33-55) in the traditional outpatient group. By the end of the study, it was observed that the laboratory data of Phosphorus, Sodium, Triglyceride, Hemoglobin showed significant improvements, Furthermore the APP + outpatient group demonstrated superior results compared to the traditional outpatient group (P < .05). And it was observed that there were 34 deaths (1.4%) in the APP + outpatient group and 46 deaths (1.6%) in the traditional outpatient group(P = .49). After matching for renal replacement therapy outcomes, the two groups were found to be comparable (95% CI [0.72-1.08], P = .23), with no significant difference. However, it was noted that the traditional outpatient group had a lower incidence of using temporary catheters during initial hemodialysis (95% CI [8.4-29.8%], P < .001). CONCLUSION: The development and application of an app combined with outpatient follow-up management can improve patient health outcomes. However, to ensure optimal preparation for kidney replacement therapy, patients in CKD stages 4-5 may require more frequent traditional outpatient follow-ups, and further develop an information-based decision-making support tool for renal replacement therapy.

Two new monoterpenoid indole alkaloids, gelselegandines F (1) and G (2), were isolated from the aerial parts of Gelsemium elegans. Their structures were elucidated by means of spectroscopic techniques and quantum chemical calculations. The ECD calculations were conducted at the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level and NMR calculations were carried out using the Gauge-Including Atomic Orbitals (GIAO) method. Structurally, the two new compounds possessed rare, cage-like, monoterpenoid indole skeletons. All isolated compounds and the total alkaloids extract were tested for cytotoxicity against four different tumor cell lines. The total alkaloids extract of G. elegans exhibited significant antitumor activity with IC50 values ranging from 32.63 to 82.24 ug/mL. In order to discover anticancer leads from the active extraction, both new indole compounds (1-2) were then screened for cytotoxicity. Interestingly, compound 2 showed moderate cytotoxicity against K562 leukemia cells with an IC50 value of 57.02 uM.

OBJECTIVE: Exercise, like daily walking, may improve overall health and impede progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD); however, no specific walking dose has been recommended for patients with CKD. We aimed to investigate the association between daily walking steps and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in adults with CKD. DESIGN AND METHODS: The walking steps of patients with CKD were extracted from the We Run mobile application. Their average daily walking steps were calculated and subdivided into the low-, middle-, and high-level groups. HRQOL was assessed using the physical component summary (PCS) and mental component summary (MCS) of the MOS 36 Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). RESULTS: A total of 558 adults (50.5%, men) with an average age of 40.2 (±13.8) years were enrolled. The median daily step count was 7,404 steps. The daily walking step count demonstrated an inverse U-shaped relationship with the SF-36 and subscale scores. Participants with daily walking steps between 7,000 and 12,000 have the highest PCS (68.1 ± 12.2) and MCS scores (70.0 ± 19.5). The multiple linear regression model showed that compared with patients with a daily step count of 7,000 to 12,000, patients with a daily step count >12,000 had a significantly lower MCS score (P < .001), while patients with a daily step count <7,000 had significantly lower PCS (P < .001) and MCS scores (P = .034). Moreover, the multivariable logistic regression model showed that patients with a daily step count >12,000 had significantly lower mental health-related quality (odds ratio [OR], 2.188; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.079-1.439 for low MCS), while those with a daily step count <7,000 had a significantly lower HRQOL than the 7,000 to 12,000 daily step count group (OR, 2.113; 95% CI, 1.203-3.711 for low PCS; OR, 2.099; 95% CI, 1.210-3.643 for low MCS). CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that daily walking steps between 7,000 and 12,000 are associated with high HRQOL in adults with CKD.

This paper is concerned with minimizing the average of n cost functions over a network in which agents may communicate and exchange information with each other. We consider the setting where only noisy gradient information is available. To solve the problem, we study the distributed stochastic gradient descent (DSGD) method and perform a non-asymptotic convergence analysis. For strongly convex and smooth objective functions, in expectation, DSGD asymptotically achieves the optimal network independent convergence rate compared to centralized stochastic gradient descent (SGD). Our main contribution is to characterize the transient time needed for DSGD to approach the asymptotic convergence rate. Moreover, we construct a "hard" optimization problem that proves the sharpness of the obtained result. Numerical experiments demonstrate the tightness of the theoretical results.

To meet the increasing need of high-data-rate and broadband wireless communication systems, the devices and its circuits R&D under Millimeter, Sub-Millimeter, or even Terahertz (THz) frequency bands are attracting more and more attention from not only academic, but also industrial areas. Most of the former research on the THz waveband (0.1-10 THz) antenna design is mainly focused on realizing high directional gain, such as horn antennas, even though the coverage area is very limited when comparing with the current Wi-Fi system. One solution for the horizontally omnidirectional communication antenna is using the structure of multiple split-ring resonators (MSRRs). Aiming at this point, a novel 300 GHz microstrip antenna array based on the dual-surfaced multiple split-ring resonators (DSMSRRs) is proposed in this paper. By employing the two parallel microstrip transmission lines, different MSRRs are fed and connected on two surfaces of the PCB with a centrally symmetric way about them. The feeding port of the whole antenna is in between the centers of the two microstrip lines. Thus, this kind of structure is a so-called DSMSRR. Based on the different size of the MSRRs, different or multiple working wavebands can be achieved on the whole antenna. Firstly, in this paper, the quasi-static model is used to analyze the factors affecting the resonance frequency of MSRRs. Simulation and measured results demonstrate that the resonant frequency of the proposed array antenna is 300 GHz, which meets the design requirements of the expected frequency point and exhibits good radiation characteristics. Then, a dual-band antenna is designed on the above methods, and it is proved by simulation that the working frequency bands of the proposed dual-band antenna with reflection coefficient below -10 dB are 274.1-295.6 GHz and 306.3-313.4 GHz.

In this paper, a series of four novel microstrip antenna array designs based on different annular-microstrip feeding lines at 60-GHz millimeter wave (mmW) band are proposed, aiming at the potential usage of the mmW coverage antenna with multi-directional property. As the feeding network, the annular contour microstrip lines are employed to connect the patch units so as to form a more compact array. Our first design is to use an outer contour annular microstrip line to connect four-direction linear arrays composed of 1 × 3 rectangular patches, thus the gain of 8.4 dBi and bandwidth of over 300 MHz are obtained. Our second design is to apply the two-direction pitchfork-shaped array each made up of two same linear arrays as the above, therefore the gain of 9.65 dBi and bandwidth of around 250 MHz are achieved. Our third design is to employ dual (inner and outer contour) annular-microstrip feeding lines to interconnect the above four-direction linear arrays, while our fourth design is to bring bridged annular-microstrip feeding lines, both of which can realize the goal of multi-directional radiation characteristic and higher gain of over 10 dBi.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) negatively affects the healthy lives of many individuals. Most previous studies on AR focused on the expression of cytokines, with only a few analyzing cytokine expression from a metabolomics viewpoint. Therefore, it is worthwhile to study AR at the metabolic level. Consequently, we aimed to identify differential serum biomarkers by metabolomics. In this study, the orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) model was applied to characterize the differences in serum samples collected from patients with AR and healthy volunteers. Ten metabolites (except hexadecanoic acid) were found to be altered significantly (p < .05) in the former group, according to results of principal component analysis and OPLS-DA, indicating that these metabolites could be potential biomarkers. MetaboAnalyst 4.0 and pathway enrichment analysis showed that these changes in metabolites mainly involved three pathways, namely, porphyrin and chlorophyll metabolism, arachidonic acid metabolism, and purine metabolism. Our findings may contribute to a better understanding of the potential pathogenesis mechanisms and provide a metabolic evidence for in-depth studies of AR.

We provide a discussion of several recent results which, in certain scenarios, are able to overcome a barrier in distributed stochastic optimization for machine learning. Our focus is the so-called asymptotic network independence property, which is achieved whenever a distributed method executed over a network of n nodes asymptotically converges to the optimal solution at a comparable rate to a centralized method with the same computational power as the entire network. We explain this property through an example involving the training of ML models and sketch a short mathematical analysis for comparing the performance of distributed stochastic gradient descent (DSGD) with centralized stochastic gradient decent (SGD).

The harvest index (HI) is the ratio of grain yield to the total biomass and represents the harvestable yield of crops. In Brassica napus, the HI is lower than that of other economically important crops, and limited relevant studies have been carried out regarding this issue. In this study, phenotypic analyses of 11 related traits showed the complexity of HI and the feasibility of cultivating desirable varieties with high HI. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping based on a high-density genetic map identified 160 QTL, 163 epistatic loci pairs for HI and three closely related traits: seed yield (SY), biomass yield (BY) and plant height (PH), including two, five and three major QTL for HI, SY and PH, respectively. The related candidate genes underlying the QTL and epistatic loci with coding region variation were identified and investigated, including BnaA02g14010D, homologous to OsTB1, which functions as a negative regulator for lateral branching, and BnaA02g18890D, homologous to OsGW2, which controls grain width and weight. The complex correlation of HI with related traits, numerous QTL and epistatic loci and the candidate genes identified here provide new insights into the genetic architecture of HI, which might further enhance effective breeding strategies for yield improvement in rapeseed.

We elucidate chirality production under parity breaking constant electromagnetic fields, with which we clarify qualitative differences in and out of equilibrium. For a strong magnetic field the pair production from the Schwinger mechanism increments the chirality. The pair production rate is exponentially suppressed with mass according to the Schwinger formula, while the mass dependence of chirality production in the axial Ward identity appears in the pseudoscalar term only. We demonstrate that, in a real-time formulation with in and out states, the axial Ward identity with an in-in expectation value leads to a chirality production rate consistent with the Schwinger formula, while the axial anomaly with an in-out expectation value is canceled by the pseudoscalar condensate for any mass. We illuminate that such an in- and out-state formulation clarifies subtleties in the chiral magnetic effect in and out of equilibrium, and we discuss further applications to real-time condensates.

To screen potential biomarkers of curcumin related to treating depression rats by using metabolomics means, so as to explore the antidepressant action mechanism of curcumin. The healthy male SD rats were randomly divided into four groups. Chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) stimulation was conducted for modeling for 2 weeks, and then curcumin (200 mgâ¢kg⻹) or venlafaxine (40 mgâ¢kg⻹) was given by gavage administration. The blank group and model group rats were given with the same volume of 1% CMCNa normal saline, once per day for two weeks. The rats serum for each group was collected and LC/MS-IT-TOF method was used to characterize the metabolic differences. Also multivariate statistical analysis was used to screen possible potential biomarkers and analyze the possible metabolic pathways. After administration of curcumin and venlafaxine respectively, the depression indexes of CUMS model rats were all improved significantly (P<0.05), but there were no significant differences between curcumin and venlafaxine groups. In PCA and PLS-DA analysis after curcumin or venlafaxine intervention on CUMS model group rats, the small molecule metabolites level reflects a normal trend, and particularly for the curcumin group. Through metabonomics technology, 11 biomarkers associated with curcumin antidepressant effect were screened, and at the same time seven metabolic pathways were involved. The results showed that curcumin had antidepressant effects, which was evident in both macro and micro levels, comparable with positive drug of venlafaxine. The antidepressant effect of curcumin may be associated with the glycerol phospholipid metabolism, linoleic acid metabolism, pentose and glucuronic acid ester and ether lipid metabolism, but still need further exploration in the future.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Chinese herbal medicine (CHM), as well as Western medicine (WM), is an important cause of drug-induced liver injury (DILI). However, the differences between CHM and WM as agents implicated in liver injury have rarely been reported. METHODS: Overall, 1985 (2.05%) DILI cases were retrospectively collected from the 96 857 patients hospitalized because of liver dysfunction in the 302 Military Hospital between January 2009 and January 2014. RESULTS: In all the enrolled patients with DILI, CHM was implicated in 563 cases (28.4%), while 870 cases (43.8%) were caused by WM and the remaining patients (27.8%) by the combination of WM and CHM. Polygonum multiflorum was the major implicated CHM. Compared with WM, the cases caused by CHM showed more female (51 vs 71%, P < 0.001) and positive rechallenge (6.1 vs 8.9%, P = 0.046), a much greater proportion of hepatocellular injury (62.2 vs 88.5%, P < 0.001), and a higher mortality (2.8 vs 4.8%, P = 0.042); however, no differences in the rates of chronic DILI and ALF were found (12.9 vs 12.4%, P = 0.807; 7.6 vs 7.6%, P = 0.971). Based on Roussel Uclaf Causality Assessment Method, 75.6% of cases caused by CHM were classified as probable and only 16.6% as highly probable, significantly different from WM (38.4 and 60.3%, all P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The causal relationship between CHM and liver injury is much complex, and the clinical characteristics of DILI caused by CHM differ from those caused by WM.

In this paper, the spectrum-effect correlation analysis method was used to explore the main effective components of Tripterygium wilfordii for liver toxicity, and provide reference for promoting the quality control of T. wilfordii. Chinese medicine T.wilfordii was taken as the study object, and LC-Q-TOF-MS was used to characterize the chemical components in T. wilfordii samples from different areas, and their main components were initially identified after referring to the literature. With the normal human hepatocytes (LO2 cell line)as the carrier, acetaminophen as positive medicine, and cell inhibition rate as testing index, the simple correlation analysis and multivariate linear correlation analysis methods were used to screen the main components of T. wilfordii for liver toxicity. As a result, 10 kinds of main components were identified, and the spectrum-effect correlation analysis showed that triptolide may be the toxic component, which was consistent with previous results of traditional literature. Meanwhile it was found that tripterine and demethylzeylasteral may greatly contribute to liver toxicity in multivariate linear correlation analysis. T. wilfordii samples of different varieties or different origins showed large difference in quality, and the T. wilfordii from southwest China showed lower liver toxicity, while those from Hunan and Anhui province showed higher liver toxicity. This study will provide data support for further rational use of T. wilfordii and research on its liver toxicity ingredients.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the best noise index combined with ASIR weighting selection in low-dose chest scanning based on BMI. METHODS: 200 patients collected from May to December 2014 underwent non-contrast chest CT examinations, they were randomly assigned into standard dose group (Group A, NI15 combined with 30% ASIR) and low-dose groups (Group B, NI25 combined with 40% ASIR, Group C, NI30 combined with 50% ASIR, Group D, NI35 combined with 60% ASIR), 50 cases in each group; the patients were assigned into three groups based on BMI (kg/m2): BMI<18.5; 18.5≤BMI≤25; BMI>25. Signal-to-nosie ratio (SNR), contrast-to noise ratio (CNR), CT dose index volume (CTDIvol), dose-length product (DLP), effective dose (ED) and subjective scoring between the standard and low-dose groups were compared and analyzed statistically. Differences of SNR, CNR, CTDIvol, DLP and ED among groups were determined with ANOVA analysis and the consistency of diagnosis with Kappa test. RESULTS: SNR, CTDIvol, DLP and ED reduced with the increase of nosie index, the differences among the groups were statistically significant (P<0.05). Kappa value of the two reviewers were 0.888. Subjective scoring of four groups were all above 3 points in BMI<18.5 kg/m2 group; subjective scoring of ABC groups were all above 3 points in 18.5 kg/m2≤BMI≤25 kg/m2 group and subjective scoring of AB groups were all above 3 points in BMI>25 kg/m2 group. CONCLUSIONS: NI35 combined with 60% ASIR in BMI<18.5 kg/m2 group; NI30 combined with 50% ASIR in 18.5 kg/m2≤BMI≤25 kg/m2 group; NI25 combined with 40% ASIR in 18.5 kg/m2≤BMI≤25 kg/m2 group were the best parameters combination which both can significantly reduce the radiation dose and ensure the image quality.

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is often confused with other liver diseases because of their shared nonspecific symptoms and serological and histological overlap. This study compared the plasma metabolomic profiles of patients with AIH, primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), PBC/AIH overlap syndrome (OS), and drug-induced liver injury (DILI) with those of healthy subjects to identify potential biomarkers of AIH. Metabolomic profiling and biomarker screening were performed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR) coupled with a partial least-squares discriminant analysis. Compared with the levels in healthy volunteers and other liver disease patients, AIH patients exhibited relatively high levels of plasma pyruvate, lactate, acetate, acetoacetate, and glucose. Such metabolites are typically related to energy metabolism alterations and may be a sign of metabolic conversion to the aerobic glycolysis phenotype of excessive immune activation. Increased aromatic amino acids and decreased branched-chain amino acids were found in the plasma of AIH patients. The whole NMR profiles were stepwise-reduced, and nine metabolomic biomarkers having the greatest significance in the discriminant analysis were obtained. The diagnostic utility of the selected metabolites was assessed, and these biomarkers achieved good sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy (all above 93%) in distinguishing AIH from PBC, DILI, and OS. This report is the first to present the metabolic phenotype of AIH and the potential utility of 1H NMR metabolomics in the diagnosis of AIH.

PURPOSE: The patient-reported outcomes (PROs) measuring patient's experience and perception of disease are important components of approach to care. However, no tools are available to assess the PROs of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study aims to develop and verify a PROs scale to evaluate clinical outcomes in CKD patients. METHODS: The theoretical structure model and original item pool were formed through a literature review, patient interviews and references to relevant scales. The Delphi method, classical test theory methods and item response theory method were used to select items and adjust dimensions to form the final scale. Altogether 360 CKD patients were recruited through convenience sampling. CKD-PROs could be evaluated from four aspects, namely reliability, content validity, construct validity, responsibility, and feasibility. RESULTS: The CKD-PROs scale covers 4 domains, including the physiological, psychological, social, and therapeutic domain, and 12 dimensions, 54 items. The Cronbach's α is 0.939, the split reliability coefficient is 0.945, and the correlation of the scores each item and domain's coefficients range from 0.413 to 0.669. The results of structure validity, content validity and reactivity showed that the multidimensional measurement of the scale met professional expectations. The recovery rate and effective rate of the scale were over 99%. CONCLUSION: The CKD-PROs scale has great reliability, validity, reactivity, acceptability and is capable of being used as one of the evaluation tools for the clinical outcomes of CKD patients.

Introduction: European Nursing care Pathways (ENP) is a professional care language that utilizes software to map care processes and utilize the data for research purposes, process control, and personnel requirement calculations. However, there is a lack of internationally developed terminology systems and subset specifically designed for the nutritional management of CKD. The aim of this study was to create a subset of the standardized nursing terminology for nutrition management in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Materials and methods: According to the guidelines for subset development, four research steps were carried out: (i) Translation of version 3.2 of the ENP (chapter on kidney diseases) and understanding of the framework structure and coding rules of the ENP; (ii) Identification of relevant six-dimensional nursing terms; (iii) Creation of a framework for the subset; (iv) Review and validation by experts. Results: A subset for CKD nutritional care was created as part of this project, comprising 630 terms, with 17 causal relationships related to nursing diagnoses, 115 symptoms, 31 causes, 34 goals/outcomes, 420 intervention specifications and 13 resources, including newly developed care terms. All terms within the subset have been created using a six-step maintenance procedure and a clinical standard pathway for nutrition management in the SAPIM mode. Implications for nursing practice: This terminology subset can facilitate standardized care reports in CKD nutrition management, which is used to standardize nursing practice, quantify nursing, services, guidance on care decisions, promoting the exchange and use of CKD nutrition data and serve as a reference for the creation of standardized subset of nursing terminology in China.

AIMS: To identify the incidence, prevalence and risk factors of exposure keratopathy (EK) among critically ill patients. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis, in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 Statement. METHODS: The Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database (CNKI), Chinese Biomedical Database (CBM), Weipu Database (VIP) and WanFang Database were systematically searched from inception to June 2022. Observational studies that reported EK among paediatric and adult critically ill patients were screened and included original articles based on the inclusion criteria. Two reviewers independently completed data extraction and quality assessments. Subgroup analysis investigated potential causes of heterogeneity. RESULTS: Of the 4508 studies identified, 23 studies involving 3519 subjects were included. The pooled prevalence of EK was 34.0%, and the pooled incidence rate of EK was 23.0%. Risk factors associated with EK in critically ill patients included lagophthalmos, chemosis, eye blinks <5 times per minute, mechanical ventilation, sedation, lower Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score and higher Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score. CONCLUSION: This review shows that EK rates are high in critically ill patients and are influenced by multiple factors. Medical staff should pay more attention to EK in critically ill patients, conduct professional evaluations and implement targeted eye care protocols to reduce its occurrence. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: This study shows the frequency of and multiple risk factors for EK in critically ill patients, which provides evidence-based guidance for nurses to evaluate the risk of EK in critically ill patients and take appropriate precautions to reduce the risk. PURPOSE: Myofibroblastic cancer-associated fibroblasts (myCAFs) are important components of the tumor microenvironment closely associated with tumor stromal remodeling and immunosuppression. This study aimed to explore myCAFs marker gene biomarkers for clinical diagnosis and therapy for patients with bladder cancer (BC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: BC single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data were obtained from the National Center for Biotechnology Information Sequence Read Archive. Transcriptome and clinical data were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas and the Gene Expression Omnibus databases. Subsequently, univariate Cox and LASSO (Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator regression) regression analyses were performed to construct a prognostic signature. Immune cell activity was estimated using single-sample gene set enrichment analysis whilst the TIDE (tumor immune dysfunction and exclusion) method was employed to assess patient response to immunotherapy. The chemotherapy response of patients with BC was evaluated using genomics of drug sensitivity in cancer. Furthermore, Immunohistochemistry was used to verify the correlation between MAP1B expression and immunotherapy efficacy. The scRNA-seq data were analyzed to identify myCAFs marker genes. RESULTS: Combined with bulk RNA-sequencing data, we constructed a two-gene (COL6A1 and MAP1B) risk signature. In patients with BC, the signature demonstrated outstanding prognostic value, immune infiltration, and immunotherapy response. This signature served as a crucial guide for the selection of anti-tumor chemotherapy medications. Additionally, immunohistochemistry confirmed that MAP1B expression was significantly correlated with immunotherapy efficacy. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings revealed a typical prognostic signature based on myCAF marker genes, which offers patients with BC a novel treatment target alongside theoretical justification.

Objective: Storke is a leading cause of death and disability affecting million people worldwide, 80% of which is ischemic stroke (IS). Recently, traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) have received great attentions in treating IS due to their low poisonous effects and high safety. Buyang Huanwu Decoction (BHD), a famous and classical Chinese prescription, has been used for treating stroke-induced disability for centuries. Yet, its underlying mechanism is still in fancy. Methods: We first constructed an IS model by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Then, a metabonomics study on serum samples was performed using UHPLC-QTOF/MS, followed by multivariate data analysis including principal components analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares-discriminate analysis (OPLS-DA). Results: Metabolic profiling of PCA indicated metabolic perturbation caused by MCAO was regulated by BHD back to normal levels, which is in agreement with the neurobehavioral evaluations. In the OPLS-DA, 12 metabolites were screened as potential biomarkers involved in MCAO-induced IS. Three metabolic pathways were recognized as the most relevant pathways, involving one carbon pool by folate, sphingolipid metabolism and inositol phosphate metabolism. BHD significantly reversed the abnormality of 7 metabolites to normal levels. Conclusions: This is the first study to investigate the effect of BHD on IS at the metabolite level and to reveal the underlying mechanisms of BHD, which is complementary to neurobehavioral evaluation. In a broad sense, the current study brings novel and valuable insights to evaluate efficacy of TCMs, to interpret the action mechanisms, and to provide the theoretical basis for further research on the therapeutic mechanisms in clinical practice.
