RESUMO

This study aimed to identify the main components of an essential oil produced from leaves of Ambrosia trifida and to evaluate its potential allelopathic effect on seed germination and seedling growth of lettuce, watermelon, cucumber and tomato. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and characterized chemically by gas chromatography (GC) coupled with both mass spectrometry (MS) and flame ionization detector (FID). Total 69 compounds were identified, with limonene (20.7 %), bornyl acetate (15.0 %), borneol (14.7 %) and germacrene D (11.6 %) as the major components. The working solutions of the essential oil emulsified with Tween 20 and dissolved in distilled water were prepared at four concentration levels (0.01, 0.1, 0.5 % and 1 %, v/v). The results obtained showed that increase in essential oil concentration leads to decrease in seed germination, as well as shoot and radical length of lettuce, watermelon, cucumber and tomato. The obtained data revealed a highly significant effect (p<0.05) between control and 1 % and 0.5 % oil concentrations in all treatments. The essential oil of A. trifida exhibited more powerful phytotoxic effects on lettuce, watermelon and tomato than on cucumber regarding germination and early seedling growth.

RESUMO

Oxidative stress in soybean seedlings and the length of the soybean stem lesions infected with the fungus Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid were evaluated to determine the most tolerant soybean cultivar to this pathogen. The level of superoxide anion radical (O2•-) production, the activity of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide-dismutase (SOD), and the intensity of lipid peroxidation (LP) were measured in four soybean cultivars: Favorit, Atlas, Victoria, and Rubin. Results showed that O2•- radical production and SOD activity were the most elevated in the cv. Favorit inoculated with M. phaseolina, while the level of lipid peroxidation intensity was the lowest compared to the control. This indicates that the soybean cv. Favorit has managed to prevent infection with M. phaseolina. Furthermore, higher O2•- radical production and lower SOD enzyme activity were measured in cv. Victoria, with enhanced lipid peroxidation. This means that the cv. Victoria was infected with M. phaseolina, and was the most sensitive. None of the tested oxidative stress parameters showed a significant difference in the cvs. Atlas and Rubin compared to the control. Furthermore, the highest lesion length was measured in the cv. Victoria, followed by cv. Favorit, while the lowest lesion length was measured in the cv. Atlas followed by the cv. Rubin; and thus, the cv. Atlas followed by the cv. Rubin, were the most tolerant soybean cultivars to this pathogen.

RESUMO

Oxidative stress in soybean plants infected with Diaporthe isolates was evaluated in order to select (1) the least aggressive inoculation method, (2) to determine the most aggressive Diaporthe isolate, and (3) to determine the most tolerant soybean cultivar to this isolate. Based on the present malondialdehyde (MDA) content, the main end product of the lipid peroxidation process, and the biomarker for oxidative stress, the mycelium contact method was chosen as the least aggressive inoculation method, compared to the toothpick method and plug method. The activity of the antioxidant enzymes (superoxide-dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (PX)), the reduced glutathione (GSH) content, and the level of lipid peroxidation (LP) were measured in soybean cv. Sava infected by five different Diaporthe species (DPM1F-D. aspalathi, DPC/KR19-D. caulivora, DPC004NY15-D. eres, 18-DIA-SOY-14-D. gulyae, and PL157A-D. longicolla). The most pathogenic Diaporthe species to cv. Sava was D. eres. The screening of the antioxidant enzymes activity in the leaves of 12 different soybean cultivars (Altona, Atlas, Capital, Chico, CX134, Favorit, Lakota, McCall, Morsoy, Strain, Rubin, and Victoria) infected with D. eres by the mycelium contact inoculation method showed that Capital, McCall, and Morsoy were the cultivars with the highest tolerance to D. eres, followed by Chico, Favorit, Lakota, and Rubin. The most sensitive cultivars were Atlas, CX134, Victoria, and Strain.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the hydrolates obtained as the by-products of the Thymus vulgaris essential oil steam distillation process. The bioassays, which were undertaken in order to determine the effect on germination and initial growth of seedlings of some cultivated and weed species, were performed under controlled conditions with different concentrations of the hydrolates. Seeds of Glycine max, Helianthus annuus, Zea mays, Triticum aestivum, Daucus carota subsp. sativus, Allium cepa, Medicago sativa, and Trifolium repens, and six weed species-Amaranthus retroflexus, Chenopodium album, Portulaca oleracea, Echinochloa crus-galli, Sorghum halepense, and Solanum nigrum-were treated with 10, 20, 50, and 100% T. vulgaris hydrolate solution. The obtained results showed that the T. vulgaris hydrolate had the least negative effect on the germination of cultivated species, such as soybean, sunflower and maize, whereas clover and alfalfa were the most sensitive. By comparison, all the tested weed species expressed high susceptibility. It can be concluded that the T. vulgaris hydrolate has an herbicidal effect, in addition to its potential as a biopesticide in terms of integrated weed management.

RESUMO

Vegetables are important contributors to a healthy diet, and their adequate daily intake can help prevent some of the major illnesses. The aim of the study was to examine the content of the major and trace elements in selected organically grown (OG) and conventionally grown (CG) vegetables (cabbage, kohlrabi, Brussels sprout, beetroot, carrot, potato, and onion), taken from city green markets. Multi-elemental analysis was carried out by inductively coupled plasma method with optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Nutritional quality evaluation in comparison to nutritional reference values was done. In studied vegetables, Al, Ca, K, Fe (with the exception of organic kohlrabi), Mg, Na, P, S, and Zn were quantified in all samples, whereas As, Cd, Co, Hg, Se, and V were below the limit of detection for these elements. Macroelements and trace elements were found at higher concentrations in OG and CG vegetables, respectively. Differences in concentrations of studied elements between the same vegetable species produced in two agricultural systems were significant, except for beetroot (p ≤ 0.05). Principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis results showed that the botanical origin had higher influence on sample differentiation than the agronomic practice, which was in accordance with the results obtained by Mann-Whitney U test. Good quality of both OG and CG vegetables in respect of nutritionally beneficial elements was observed.

RESUMO

The analysis of water quality, regarding the content of metals, especially heavy and radioactive ones, has been carried out in an indirect way, by testing scale formed in a hot-water heater, using water from the water-supply network of the city of Belgrade - the district of New Belgrade. The determination of the composition and the structure of the scale has resulted in its complete identification, and its crystallochemical formula has been defined. It has unequivocally been established that the obtained results are within the tolerance boundary with the results acquired by a conventional analysis of water, when it is a matter of very low concentrations. The presence of radioactive elements of uranium and strontium in a scale sample has been found and the way of their penetrating its composition and structure has been explained. Applying the fractional extraction method, uranium has been established to be of an anthropogenic origin.

RESUMO

The FTIR spectroscopy has been employed in this research work to monitor theprocess of nitrodope photodegradation, by measuring surfaces of bands typical of a nitrogroup. Nitric esters are subject to degradation, which is reflected on a quantitative ratio ofthe surfaces of the IR bands that originate from the nitric ester. The obtained results showthat the length of the UV rays' activity on the samples over the time periods of 240, 480and 960 minutes directly affects the spectrum appearance of the same sample before andafter the irradiation. The longer the action time of the UV rays and the higher a masspercentage of nitrocellulose in the nitrodope is, the smaller the bands' surfaces become, i.e.the level of degradation is higher. In order to confirm the degradation of nitrodope, thedegree of crosslinking has also been examined by determining the König hardness and alsothe mean viscosity molar mass has been defined repeatedly applying the capillaryviscosimetry method.

RESUMO

This is a preliminary study of the depth distribution of (137)Cs radionuclides in cultivated anthrosol soil of a 15-year old peach tree plantation at the experimental field "Radmilovac" near Belgrade. Before planting, the soil was ploughed at the depth of 1 m. The soil had not been annually ploughed, irrigated and treated with mineral fertilizers for three years before sampling. Activity concentration for (137)Cs ranged from 1.8 Bq kg(-1) to 35 Bq kg(-1). Along the soil depth it varied highly, reaching as high a total variation coefficient as 83 %. Radiocaesium distribution patterns depended on the extent of soil mixing in the plough layer, as it was mechanically transferred from the surface to the lower soil layers during cultivation. (137)Cs was associated with humus content and fixation to clay fractions in the soil. Our results single out soil's hygroscopic water as a valuable parameter for (137)Cs behaviour that could be used commonly if the measurement is standardised.
