Long-term social aggregations are maintained by multiple mechanisms, including the use of acoustic signals, which may nonetheless entail significant energetic costs. To date, however, no studies have gauged whether there are significant energetic costs to social call production in bats, which heavily rely on acoustic communication for a diversity of social tasks. We measured energetic expenditure during acoustic signaling in Spix's disc-winged bats (Thyroptera tricolor), a species that commonly uses contact calls to locate the ephemeral furled leaves that they use for roosting. To determine the cost of sound production, we measured oxygen consumption using intermittent-flow respirometry methods, with and without social signaling. Our results show that the emission of contact calls significantly increases oxygen consumption; vocal individuals spent, on average, 12.42 kJ more during social signaling trials than they spent during silent trials. We also found that as resting metabolic rate increased in males, there was a decreasing probability that they would emit response calls. These results provide support to the 'allocation model', which predicts that only individuals with lower self-maintenance costs can afford to spend energy in additional activities. Our results provide a step forward in our understanding of how physiology modulates behavior, specifically how the costs of call production and resting metabolic rate may explain the differences in vocal behavior among individuals.

RESUMO

Little is known about promotoras' professional experiences engaging in Latinx health promotion. In this promotora-led community-based participatory study, we purposively recruited and interviewed 30 Spanish-speaking promotoras who worked in Los Angeles County and who had at least 5 years of experience as promotoras. Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, findings revealed promotoras self-identified as health professionals who offered unique, insider perspectives. Challenges arose as employers viewed promotoras as volunteer lay health workers, while promotoras desired opportunities for professional growth. Motivation to continue working as promotoras stemmed from their commitment to Latinx communities. We provide recommendations to strengthen community-based capacity for advancing Latinx health.

In the sea urchin embryo, gastrulation is characterized by the ingression and directed cell migration of primary mesenchyme cells (PMCs), as well as the primary invagination and convergent extension of the endomesoderm. Like all cell shape changes, individual and collective cell motility is orchestrated by Rho family GTPases and their modulation of the actomyosin cytoskeleton. And while endomesoderm specification has been intensively studied in echinoids, much less is known about the proximate regulators driving cell motility. Toward these ends, we employed anti-sense morpholinos, mutant alleles and pharmacological inhibitors to assess the role of Cdc42 during sea urchin gastrulation. While inhibition of Cdc42 expression or activity had only mild effects on PMC ingression, PMC migration, alignment and skeletogenesis were disrupted in the absence of Cdc42, as well as elongation of the archenteron. PMC migration and patterning of the larval skeleton relies on the extension of filopodia, and Cdc42 was required for filopodia in vivo as well as in cultured PMCs. Lastly, filopodial extension required both Arp2/3 and formin actin-nucleating factors, supporting models of filopodial nucleation observed in other systems. Together, these results suggest that Cdc42 plays essential roles during PMC cell motility and organogenesis.

Background: Uncertainty remains about the effects of aspirin in patients with prior percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) having noncardiac surgery. Objective: To evaluate benefits and harms of perioperative aspirin in patients with prior PCI. Design: Nonprespecified subgroup analysis of a multicenter factorial trial. Computerized Internet randomization was done between 2010 and 2013. Patients, clinicians, data collectors, and outcome adjudicators were blinded to treatment assignment. (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT01082874). Setting: 135 centers in 23 countries. Patients: Adults aged 45 years or older who had or were at risk for atherosclerotic disease and were having noncardiac surgery. Exclusions were placement of a bare-metal stent within 6 weeks, placement of a drug-eluting stent within 1 year, or receipt of nonstudy aspirin within 72 hours before surgery. Intervention: Aspirin therapy (overall trial, n = 4998; subgroup, n = 234) or placebo (overall trial, n = 5012; subgroup, n = 236) initiated within 4 hours before surgery and continued throughout the perioperative period. Of the 470 subgroup patients, 99.9% completed follow-up. Measurements: The 30-day primary outcome was death or nonfatal myocardial infarction; bleeding was a secondary outcome. Results: In patients with prior PCI, aspirin reduced the risk for the primary outcome (absolute risk reduction, 5.5% [95% CI, 0.4% to 10.5%]; hazard ratio [HR], 0.50 [CI, 0.26 to 0.95]; P for interaction = 0.036) and for myocardial infarction (absolute risk reduction, 5.9% [CI, 1.0% to 10.8%]; HR, 0.44 [CI, 0.22 to 0.87]; P for interaction = 0.021). The effect on the composite of major and life-threatening bleeding in patients with prior PCI was uncertain (absolute risk increase, 1.3% [CI, -2.6% to 5.2%]). In the overall population, aspirin increased the risk for major bleeding (absolute risk increase, 0.8% [CI, 0.1% to 1.6%]; HR, 1.22 [CI, 1.01 to 1.48]; P for interaction = 0.50). Limitation: Nonprespecified subgroup analysis with small sample. Conclusion: Perioperative aspirin may be more likely to benefit rather than harm patients with prior PCI. The activity of the terpenes and Cannabidiol (CBD) against human coronavirus (HCoV) strain OC43 and influenza A (H1N1) was evaluated in human lung fibroblasts (MRC-5 cells). Also, we examined whether these ingredients inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). The tested preparations exhibited both anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects. The combination of terpenes was effective against both HCoV-OC43 and influenza A (H1N1) virus. The addition of CBD improved the antiviral activity in some, but not all cases. This variation in activity may suggest an antiviral mechanism. In addition, there was a strong correlation between the quantitative results from a cell-viability assay and the cytopathic effect after 72 h, as observed under a microscope. The anti-inflammatory properties of terpenes were demonstrated using a pro-inflammatory cytokine-inhibition assay, which revealed significant cytokine inhibition and enhanced by the addition of CBD.

Many group-living animals coordinate social behaviours using contact calls, which can be produced for all group members or targeted at specific individuals. In the disc-winged bat, Thyroptera tricolor, group members use 'inquiry' and 'response' calls to coordinate daily movements into new roosts (furled leaves). Rates of both calls show consistent among-individual variation, but causes of within-individual variation remain unknown. Here, we tested whether disc-winged bats produce more contact calls towards group members with higher kinship or association. In 446 experimental trials, we recorded 139 random within-group pairs of one flying bat (producing inquiry calls for roost searching) and one roosting bat (producing response calls for roost advertising). Using generalized linear mixed-effect models (GLMM), we assessed how response and inquiry calling rates varied by sender, receiver, genetic kinship and co-roosting association rate. Calling rates varied consistently across senders but not by receiver. Response calling was influenced by inquiry calling rates, but neither calling rate was higher when the interacting pair had higher kinship or association. Rather than dyadic calling rates indicating within-group relationships, our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that bats produce contact calls to maintain contact with any or all individuals within a group while collectively searching for a new roost site. Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes CECT5344 is a Gram-negative bacterium able to tolerate cyanide and to use it as the sole nitrogen source. We report here the first draft of the whole genome sequence of a P. pseudoalcaligenes strain that assimilates cyanide. Three aspects are specially emphasized in this manuscript. First, some generalities of the genome are shown and discussed in the context of other Pseudomonadaceae genomes, including genome size, G + C content, core genome and singletons among other features. Second, the genome is analysed in the context of cyanide metabolism, describing genes probably involved in cyanide assimilation, like those encoding nitrilases, and genes related to cyanide resistance, like the cio genes encoding the cyanide insensitive oxidases. Finally, the presence of genes probably involved in other processes with a great biotechnological potential like production of bioplastics and biodegradation of pollutants also is discussed.

Background: COVID-19 disease (coronavirus disease 2019) has multiple potentially fatal cardiovascular complications and pericarditis is one of them; however, if prompt treatment is given, fatal events associated to this complication decrease. Its frequency and presentation characteristics are unknown, which is why its early diagnosis is important. Objective: To know the frequency of pericarditis secondary to COVID-19 and its presentation characteristics. Material and methods: Cross-sectional study in patients with a diagnosis of pericarditis after COVID-19 disease (with a positive test). Symptoms, age, sex, comorbidities, and electrocardiogram (ECG) and transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) results were obtained. Results: A total of 3364 patients positive for COVID-19 were registered, out of which 10 met criteria for pericarditis, which represented a frequency of 0.30%. The average age of the sample was 46.1 years and 60% predominated in the male gender with a 1.5:1 ratio. The most frequent clinical characteristics were the presence of retrosternal pain (90%), absence of comorbidity (50%), and absence of electrocardiographic changes (40%). Conclusions: Pericarditis has a low frequency in patients with COVID-19. The predominant clinical presentation is chest pain. Almost half will not have electrocardiographic changes, and half will not have comorbidities.


Introducción: la enfermedad COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) tiene múltiples complicaciones cardiovasculares potencialmente mortales y la pericarditis es una de ellas; sin embargo, si se da un tratamiento oportuno disminuyen sus eventos fatales. Se desconoce su frecuencia y características de presentación, por lo que es importante su diagnóstico temprano. Objetivo: conocer la frecuencia de pericarditis secundaria a COVID-19 y sus características de presentación. Material y métodos: estudio transversal en pacientes con diagnóstico de pericarditis posterior a la enfermedad COVID-19 (con prueba positiva). Se obtuvo la sintomatología, edad, sexo, comorbilidades y resultados de electrocardiograma (ECG) y ecocardiograma transtorácico (ETT). Resultados: se registraron 3364 pacientes positivos a COVID-19, de los cuales 10 cumplieron con criterios para pericarditis, lo que representó una frecuencia del 0.30%. La edad promedio de la muestra fue de 46.1 años y predominó en el género masculino (60%) con una relación 1.5:1. Las características clínicas más frecuentes fueron la presencia de dolor retroesternal (90 %), ausencia de comorbilidad (50 %) y ausencia de cambios electrocardiográficos (40%). Conclusiones: la pericarditis tiene una frecuencia baja en pacientes con COVID-19. La presentación clínica predominante es el dolor retroesternal. Casi la mitad no tendrá cambios electrocardiográficos y la mitad no tendrá comorbilidades.

The early embryos of sea urchins and other echinoderms have served as experimental models for the study of cell division since the nineteenth century. Their rapid development, optical clarity, and ease of manipulation continue to offer advantages for studying spindle assembly and cytokinesis. In the absence of transgenic lines, alternative strategies must be employed to visualize microtubules and actin. Here, we describe methods to visualize actin and microtubule using either purified, recombinant proteins, or probes in in vitro-transcribed mRNAs.

Background: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a common cause of morbidity and mortality due to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment approaches. Objective: To assess the performance of the CORB score in subjects with CAP for predicting in-hospital mortality, death within 30 days of admission, and requirement for invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) and vasopressor support. Methods: A retrospective, cohort study with diagnostic test analysis of CORB and CURB-65 scores in subjects with CAP according to ATS criteria was undertaken. An alternative CORB score was estimated by replacing SpO2 ≤90% by the SpO2/FiO2 ratio. Crude and adjusted odd ratios (AOR) were calculated for each variable. The area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUROC) was constructed for each score, and outcomes were analyzed. AUROCs were compared with the DeLong test, considering a p value <0,05 statistically significant. Results: From 1,811 subjects who entered the analysis, 15.1% (273/1,811) died in hospital, 8.78% required IMV (159/1,811), and 9.77% (177/1,811) needed vasopressor support. CORB had an AUROC of 0,660 (95% CI: 0,623-0,697) for in-hospital mortality; an AUROC of 0,657 (95% CI: 0,621-0,692) for 30-day mortality; an AUROC of 0,637 (CI 95%: 0,589-0,685) for IMV requirement; and an AUROC of 0,635 (95% CI: 0,589-0,681) for vasopressor support. CORB performance increases when the SpO2/FiO2 ratio <300 is used as oxygenation criterion in the prediction of requirement for IMV and vasopressor support, with AUROC of 0,700 (95% CI: 0,654-0,746; p < 0.001) and AUROC of 0,702 (95% CI: 0,66-0,745; p < 0.001), respectively. CURB-65 score presents an in-hospital mortality AUROC of 0,727 (95% CI: 0,695-0,759) and 30-day mortality AUROC of 0,726 (95% CI: 0,695-0,756). Conclusions: CORB score has a good performance in predicting the need for IMV and vasopressor support in CAP patients. This performance improves when the SpO2/FiO2 ratio <300 is used instead of the SpO2 ≤90% as the oxygenation parameter. CURB-65 score is superior in the prediction of mortality.

Regular nylon or polyester mist nets used for capturing bats have several drawbacks, particularly that they are inefficient at sampling insectivorous species. One possible alternative is to use monofilament nets, whose netting is made of single strands of yarn instead of several as regular nets, making them less detectable. To date, only one study has quantified the differences in capture rates between monofilament and regular mist nets for the study of bats, yet surprisingly, its findings suggest that the latter are more efficient than the former. Here, we provide further evidence of the differences in sampling efficiency between these two nets. We captured 90 individuals and 14 species in regular nets and 125 individuals and 20 species in monofilament nets. The use of monofilament nets increased overall capture rates, particularly for insectivorous species. Species accumulation curves indicate that samples based on regular nets are significantly underestimating species diversity, most notably as these nets fail at sampling rare species. We show that incorporating monofilament nets into bat studies offers an opportunity to expand records of different guilds and rare bat species and to improve our understanding of poorly known bat assemblages while using a popular, relatively cheap and portable sampling method.

Background: Pulmonary involvement in juvenile systemic sclerosis (JSSc) is rare in children and contributes to morbimortality. This study aimed to describe the pulmonary function and clinical, radiologic, and tomographic findings in JSSc. Methods: Patients with JSSc between 5-14 years of age were included. Clinical, functional, and imaging characteristics were assessed. Patients were excluded if they showed lung disease not associated with JSSc: mixed connective tissue disease, overlap syndrome, or acute cardiopulmonary failure at the time of the study. All patients underwent physical examination, electrocardiogram, spirometry, chest X-ray, high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of the chest, echocardiography, lung function tests, and the 6-minute walk test (6-MWT). Descriptive statistics were employed for data analysis. Results: We studied 15 patients with the following characteristics: median age, 11 years; median since symptoms onset, 6 years; median since JSSc diagnosis and the finding of pulmonary involvement, 2 years. Lung disease was detected in 73%, interstitial lung disease (ILD) the most common affection (67%); pulmonary hypertension was found in 6.6%. 6-MWT was positive in 26.6%, forced vital capacity (FVC) was abnormal in 26.6%. No pulmonary involvement was found in four patients. Conclusions: The most frequent pulmonary affection in JSSc was ILD. Thus, early JSSc detection and periodic lung monitoring are mandatory to avoid further complications once JSSc is diagnosed.


Introducción: La afección pulmonar en la esclerosis sistémica juvenil (ESJ) es rara en niños y contribuye a la morbimortalidad. El objetivo de este estudio fue describir los hallazgos de función pulmonar, clínicos, radiológicos y tomográficos en la ESJ. Métodos: Se incluyeron pacientes con ESJ de 5-14 años de edad. Se evaluaron las características clínicas, funcionales y de imagen. No se incluyeron pacientes con enfermedades pulmonares no asociadas con ESJ en el momento del estudio: enfermedad mixta del tejido conectivo, síndrome de superposición o insuficiencia cardiopulmonar aguda. Se realizaron exploración física, electrocardiograma, espirometría, radiografía de tórax, tomografía computarizada de alta resolución de tórax, ecocardiografía, pruebas de función pulmonar y prueba de caminata de 6 minutos (PC6M). Se utilizó estadística descriptiva para el análisis de los datos. Resultados: Se estudiaron 15 pacientes con las siguientes características: mediana de edad, 11 años; mediana desde el inicio de los síntomas, 6 años; y mediana desde el diagnóstico de ESJ y hallazgo de afección pulmonar, 2 años. Se detectó enfermedad pulmonar en el 73%. La enfermedad pulmonar intersticial (EPI) fue la afección más común (67%) y se encontró hipertensión pulmonar en el 6.6%. La PC6M fue positiva en el 26.6%, y la capacidad vital forzada resultó anormal en el 26.6%. Cuatro pacientes no presentaron afección pulmonar. Conclusiones: La afección pulmonar más frecuente en la ESJ fue la EPI. La detección temprana de ESJ y la monitorización pulmonar periódica son obligatorias para evitar más complicaciones una vez diagnosticada la ESJ.

OBJECTIVE: The wish to hasten death has been little researched in the area of Mediterranean countries and we are not aware of specific studies on its particularities in home care in our setting. The aim of this work was to investigate the prevalence and evolution of wish to hasten death in home care, analysing its relationship with physical, emotional, spiritual, ethical and social-family unrest. METHODS: Longitudinal observational study in palliative home care in Catalonia. 43 teams agreed on the level of complexity after the first visit and after the discharge of the patient with the HexCom model, which classifies the desire to anticipate death into Low complexity (no or sporadic manifestation); Medium (persistent desire that requires specific treatment); or High (persistent desire that is considered potentially refractory). For the comparison of proportions, Pearson's Chi-squared test was used and a multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed, in which the dependent variable corresponded to the desire to hasten initial death. The level of significance was p≤0.05. RESULTS: The total number of patients included in this study was 1,677, of whom 1,169 (69.7%) were oncologic. The prevalence of desire to hasten death was 6.67%. It was related to spiritual distress, especially lack of meaning (OR 3.25) and lack of connection (OR 3.81), to psychoemotional distress (OR 2.34) and to ethical distress. Protective factors were spiritual distress in relation to transcendence (OR 0.50), the caregiver being a partner (OR 0.50) and being cared for by a team that included psychology and social work (OR 0.34). The desire to anticipate death is stable in 71.6% of patients. CONCLUSIONS: The desire to anticipate death is a changing and complex phenomenon that can emerge at any time. The presence of psycho-emotional, spiritual-existential and ethical discomfort, especially in patients without a partner, should make us take a proactive attitude to identify it early.


OBJETIVO: El deseo de adelantar la muerte ha sido poco investigado en el área de los países mediterráneos y no conocemos estudios específicos sobre sus particularidades en atención domiciliaria en nuestro entorno. El objetivo de este trabajo fue investigar la prevalencia y la evolución del deseo de anticipar la muerte en atención domiciliaria, analizando su relación con el malestar físico, emocional, espiritual, ético y sociofamiliar. METODOS: Estudio observacional longitudinal en el ámbito de la atención domiciliaria paliativa en Catalunya. 43 equipos acordaron el nivel de complejidad tras la primera visita y tras el alta del paciente con el modelo HexCom, el cual clasifica el deseo de anticipar la muerte en complejidad Baja (manifestación nula o esporádica); Media (Deseo persistente que requiere tratamiento específico); o Alta (Deseo persistente que se considera potencialmente refractario). Para la comparación de proporciones se utilizó la prueba de Ji cuadrado de Pearson y se realizó un análisis de regresión logística multivariante, en el que la variable dependiente correspondía con el deseo de adelantar la muerte inicial. El nivel de significación fue p≤0,05. RESULTADOS: El número total de pacientes incluidos en este estudio fue de 1.677, de los cuales 1.169 (69,7%) eran oncológicos. La prevalencia de deseo de anticipar la muerte fue del 6,67%. Se relacionó con el malestar espiritual, ante todo con la falta de sentido (OR 3,25) y de conexión (OR 3,81), con el malestar psicoemocional (OR 2,34) y con el malestar ético. Fueron factores protectores el malestar espiritual en relación con la transcendencia (OR 0,50), que el cuidador fuese la pareja (OR 0,50) y ser atendido por un equipo en el que se incluyese psicología y trabajo social (OR 0,34). El deseo de anticipar la muerte fue estable en el 71,6% de los pacientes. CONCLUSIONES: El deseo de anticipar la muerte es un fenómeno cambiante y complejo que puede emerger en cualquier momento. La presencia de malestar psicoemocional, espiritual-existencial y ético, sobre todo en pacientes sin pareja, nos han de hacer tomar una actitud proactiva para identificarlo precozmente.

This study analyses gender differences in the complexity observed in palliative home care through a multicentre longitudinal observational study of patients with advanced disease treated by palliative home care teams in Catalonia (Spain). We used the HexCom model, which includes six dimensions and measures three levels of complexity: high (non-modifiable situation), medium (difficult) and low. Results: N = 1677 people, 44% women. In contrast with men, in women, cancer was less prevalent (64.4% vs. 73.9%) (p < 0.001), cognitive impairment was more prevalent (34.1% vs. 26.6%; p = 0.001) and professional caregivers were much more common (40.3% vs. 24.3%; p < 0.001). Women over 80 showed less complexity in the following subareas: symptom management (41.7% vs. 51,1%; p = 0.011), emotional distress (24.5% vs. 32.8%; p = 0.015), spiritual distress (16.4% vs. 26.4%; p = 0.001), socio-familial distress (62.7% vs. 70.1%; p = 0.036) and location of death (36.0% vs. 49.6%; p < 0.000). Men were more complex in the subareas of "practice" OR = 1.544 (1.25-1.90 p = 0.000) and "transcendence" OR = 1.52 (1.16-1.98 p = 0.002). Observed complexity is related to male gender in people over 80 years of age. Women over the age of 80 are remarkably different from their male counterparts, showing less complexity regarding care for their physical, psycho-emotional, spiritual and socio-familial needs.

Capturing complexity is both a conceptual and a practical challenge in palliative care. The HexCom model has proved to be an instrument with strong reliability and to be valid for describing the needs and strengths of patients in home care. In order to explore whether it is also perceived to be helpful in enhancing coordinated and patient-centred care at a practical level, a methodological study was carried out to assess the face validity of the model. In particular, a Delphi method involving a group of 14 experts representing the full spectrum of healthcare professionals involved in palliative care was carried out. The results show that there is a high level of agreement, with a content validity index-item greater than 0.92 both with regard to the complexity model and the HexCom-Red, HexCom-Basic, and the HexCom-Clin instruments, and higher than 0.85 regarding the HexCom-Figure and the HexCom-Patient instruments. This consensus confirms that the HexCom model and the different instruments that are derived from it are valued as useful tools for a broad range of healthcare professional in coordinately capturing complexity in healthcare practice.

The identification of novel peptide hormones by functional screening is challenging because posttranslational processing is frequently required to generate biologically active hormones from inactive precursors. We developed an approach for functional screening of novel potential hormones by expressing them in endocrine host cells competent for posttranslational processing. Candidate preprohormones were selected by bioinformatics analysis, and stable endocrine host cell lines were engineered to express the preprohormones. The production of mature hormones was demonstrated by including the preprohormones insulin and glucagon, which require the regulated secretory pathway for production of the active forms. As proof of concept, we screened a set of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and identified protein FAM237A as a specific activator of GPR83, a GPCR implicated in central nervous system and regulatory T-cell function. We identified the active form of FAM237A as a C-terminally cleaved, amidated 9 kDa secreted protein. The related protein FAM237B, which is 64% homologous to FAM237A, demonstrated similar posttranslational modification and activation of GPR83, albeit with reduced potency. These results demonstrate that our approach is capable of identifying and characterizing novel hormones that require processing for activity.

In motile cells, the activities of the different Rho family GTPases are spatially segregated within the cell, and during cytokinesis there is evidence that this may also be the case. But while Rho's role as the central organizer for contractile ring assembly is well established, the role of Rac and the branched actin networks it promotes is less well understood. To characterize the contributions of these proteins during cytokinesis, we manipulated Rac and Arp2/3 activity during mitosis and meiosis in sea urchin embryos and sea star oocytes. While neither Rac nor Arp2/3 were essential for early embryonic divisions, loss of either Rac or Arp2/3 activity resulted in polar body defects. Expression of activated Rac resulted in cytokinesis failure as early as the first division, and in oocytes, activated Rac suppressed both the Rho wave that traverses the oocyte prior to polar body extrusion as well as polar body formation itself. However, the inhibitory effect of Rac on cytokinesis, polar body formation and the Rho wave could be suppressed by effector-binding mutations or direct inhibition of Arp2/3. Together, these results suggest that Rac- and Arp2/3 mediated actin networks may directly antagonize Rho signaling, thus providing a potential mechanism to explain why Arp2/3-nucleated branched actin networks must be suppressed at the cell equator for successful cytokinesis.

BACKGROUND: Complexity has become a core issue in caring for patients with advanced disease and/or at the end-of-life. The Hexagon of Complexity (HexCom) is a complexity assessment model in the process of validation in health-care settings. Our objective is to use the instrument to describe differences in complexity across disease groups in specific home care for advanced disease and/or at the end-of-life patients, both in general and as relates to each domain and subdomain. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of home care was conducted in Catalonia. The instrument includes 6 domains of needs (clinical, psychological/emotional, social/family, spiritual, ethical, and death-related), 4 domains of resources (intrapersonal, interpersonal, transpersonal, and practical), and 3 levels of complexity (High (H), Moderate (M), and Low (L)). Interdisciplinary home care teams assessed and agreed on the level of complexity for each patient. RESULTS: Forty-three teams participated (74.1% of those invited). A total of 832 patients were assessed, 61.4% of which were cancer patients. Moderate complexity was observed in 385 (47.0%) cases and high complexity in 347 (42.4%). The median complexity score was 51 for cancer patients and 23 for patients with dementia (p<0.001). We observed the highest level of complexity in the social/family domain. Patients/families most frequently used interpersonal resources (80.5%). CONCLUSIONS: This study sheds light on the high-intensity work of support teams, the importance of the social/family domain and planning the place of death, substantial differences in needs and resources across disease groups, and the importance of relationship wellbeing at the end-of-life.

Transcription factors (TFs) are proteinaceous complex, which bind to the promoter regions in the DNA and affect transcription initiation. Plant TFs control gene expressions and genes control many physiological processes, which in turn trigger cascades of biochemical reactions in plant cells. The databases available for plant TFs are somewhat abundant but all convey different information and in different formats. Some of the publicly available plant TF databases may be narrow, while others are broad in scopes. For example, some of the best TF databases are ones that are very specific with just one plant species, but there are also other databases that contain a total of up to 20 different plant species. In this review plant TF databases ranging from a single species to many will be assessed and described. The comparative analyses of all the databases and their advantages and disadvantages are also discussed.

The rapid development, simplicity and optical clarity of the sea urchin embryo make it an excellent model system for studying the dynamic events of early development. An ever-growing palette of fluorescent proteins and biosensors can now be applied to studying sea urchin development, and there are now a wide variety of imaging modes that can be employed to image sea urchin embryogenesis. However, when performing live-cell imaging, one must take into consideration the sensitivity of embryos (and fluorescent probes) to the intense light associated with confocal microscopes. Here, we discuss general considerations for keeping embryos viable on the microscope stage, as well as probes for imaging cellular membranes and the cytoskeleton. We compare the relative merits of different confocal microscopes for live imaging of embryos and describe the potential for live-cell super-resolution microscopy.
