RESUMO

Climate change is an indisputable threat to human health, especially for societies already confronted with rising social inequality, political and economic uncertainty, and a cascade of concurrent environmental challenges. Archaeological data about past climate and environment provide an important source of evidence about the potential challenges humans face and the long-term outcomes of alternative short-term adaptive strategies. Evidence from well-dated archaeological human skeletons and mummified remains speaks directly to patterns of human health over time through changing circumstances. Here, we describe variation in human epidemiological patterns in the context of past rapid climate change (RCC) events and other periods of past environmental change. Case studies confirm that human communities responded to environmental changes in diverse ways depending on historical, sociocultural, and biological contingencies. Certain factors, such as social inequality and disproportionate access to resources in large, complex societies may influence the probability of major sociopolitical disruptions and reorganizations-commonly known as "collapse." This survey of Holocene human-environmental relations demonstrates how flexibility, variation, and maintenance of Indigenous knowledge can be mitigating factors in the face of environmental challenges. Although contemporary climate change is more rapid and of greater magnitude than the RCC events and other environmental changes we discuss here, these lessons from the past provide clarity about potential priorities for equitable, sustainable development and the constraints of modernity we must address.

Anakinra is a recombinant human interleukin-1 receptor antagonist approved for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Kineret is available as a solution prepared in a borosilicate glass syringe. For implementing a placebo-controlled double-blind randomized clinical trial, anakinra is commonly transferred into plastic syringes. However, there is limited data on anakinra's stability in polycarbonate syringes. We described the results of our previous studies on the use of anakinra in glass (VCUART3) versus plastic syringes (VCUART2) compared with placebo. These studies were conducted in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), and we assessed the anti-inflammatory effects of anakinra versus placebo by comparing the area under the curve for high-sensitivity cardiac reactive protein (AUC-CRP) levels during the first 14 days of STEMI, its clinical effects on heart failure (HF) hospitalization, cardiovascular death, or new diagnosis of HF as well as adverse events profile between groups. The levels of AUC-CRP were 75 (50-255 mg·day/l) for anakinra in plastic syringes versus 255 (116-592 mg·day/l) in placebo and 60 (24-139 mg·day/l) and 86 (43-123 mg·day/l) for anakinra once and twice daily in glass syringes, respectively, compared with placebo 214 (131-394 mg·day/l). The rate of adverse events was also comparable between groups. There were no differences in the rate of HF hospitalization or cardiovascular death in patients who received anakinra in plastic or glass syringes. Fewer cases of new-onset heart failure occurred in patients receiving anakinra in plastic or glass syringes compared with placebo. Anakinra stored in plastic (polycarbonate) syringes provides comparable biologic and clinical effect to glass (borosilicate) syringes. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Anakinra (Kineret) 100 mg administered subcutaneously in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) for a duration of up to 14 days appears to have comparable safety and biological efficacy signals when delivered in prefilled glass or transferred into plastic polycarbonate syringes. This may have important implications for the feasibility of designing clinical trials in STEMI and other clinical conditions.

Interleukin-1 (IL-1) blockade with anakinra given within 12 hours from reperfusion has been shown to reduce the inflammatory response as well as prevent heart failure (HF) events in patients with STEMI. We sought to determine whether time-to-treatment influences the efficacy of anakinra on systemic inflammation and incidence of HF events in patients with STEMI. We divided the cohort in two groups base6d on the median time from percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to investigational drug, and analyzed the effects of anakinra on the area-under-the-curve for C reactive protein (AUC-CRP) and on incidence of the composite endpoint of death or new onset HF. We analyzed data from 139 patients: 84 (60%) treated with anakinra and 55 (40%) with placebo. The median time from PCI to investigational treatment was 271 (182-391) minutes. The AUC-CRP was significantly higher in patients receiving placebo versus anakinra both in those with time from PCI to treatment <271 minutes (222.6 [103.9-325.2] vs. 78.4 [44.3-131.2], P < 0.001) and those with time from PCI to treatment ≥271 minute (235.2 [131.4-603.4] vs. 75.5 [38.9-171.9], P < 0.001) (P > 0.05 for interaction). Anakinra significantly reduced the combined endpoint of death or new onset HF in patients with time from PCI to treatment <271 minutes (5 [11%] vs. 9n[36%], log-rank χ 2 5.985, P = 0.014) as well as in patients with time from PCI to drug ≥271 minutes (2n[5%] vs. 7 [23%], log-rank χ 2 3.995, P = 0.046) (P > 0.05 for interaction). IL-1 blockade with anakinra blunts the acute systemic inflammatory response and prevents HF events independent of time-to-treatment. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: In patients with ST segment elevation presenting within 12 hours of pain onset and treated within 12 hours of reperfusion, interleukin-1 blockade with anakinra blunts the acute systemic inflammatory response, a surrogate of interleukin-1 activity, and prevents heart failure events independent of time-to-treatment.

BACKGROUND: Hansen's disease (leprosy), widespread in medieval Europe, is today mainly prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions with around 200,000 new cases reported annually. Despite its long history and appearance in historical records, its origins and past dissemination patterns are still widely unknown. Applying ancient DNA approaches to its major causative agent, Mycobacterium leprae, can significantly improve our understanding of the disease's complex history. Previous studies have identified a high genetic continuity of the pathogen over the last 1500 years and the existence of at least four M. leprae lineages in some parts of Europe since the Early Medieval period. RESULTS: Here, we reconstructed 19 ancient M. leprae genomes to further investigate M. leprae's genetic variation in Europe, with a dedicated focus on bacterial genomes from previously unstudied regions (Belarus, Iberia, Russia, Scotland), from multiple sites in a single region (Cambridgeshire, England), and from two Iberian leprosaria. Overall, our data confirm the existence of similar phylogeographic patterns across Europe, including high diversity in leprosaria. Further, we identified a new genotype in Belarus. By doubling the number of complete ancient M. leprae genomes, our results improve our knowledge of the past phylogeography of M. leprae and reveal a particularly high M. leprae diversity in European medieval leprosaria. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings allow us to detect similar patterns of strain diversity across Europe with branch 3 as the most common branch and the leprosaria as centers for high diversity. The higher resolution of our phylogeny tree also refined our understanding of the interspecies transfer between red squirrels and humans pointing to a late antique/early medieval transmission. Furthermore, with our new estimates on the past population diversity of M. leprae, we gained first insights into the disease's global history in relation to major historic events such as the Roman expansion or the beginning of the regular transatlantic long distance trade. In summary, our findings highlight how studying ancient M. leprae genomes worldwide improves our understanding of leprosy's global history and can contribute to current models of M. leprae's worldwide dissemination, including interspecies transmissions.

Syphilis was perceived to be a new disease in Europe in the late 15th century, igniting a debate about its origin that continues today in anthropological, historical, and medical circles. We move beyond this age-old debate using an interdisciplinary approach that tackles broader questions to advance the understanding of treponemal infection (syphilis, yaws, bejel, and pinta). How did the causative organism(s) and humans co-evolve? How did the related diseases caused by Treponema pallidum emerge in different parts of the world and affect people across both time and space? How are T. pallidum subspecies related to the treponeme causing pinta? The current state of scholarship in specific areas is reviewed with recommendations made to stimulate future work. Understanding treponemal biology, genetic relationships, epidemiology, and clinical manifestations is crucial for vaccine development today and for investigating the distribution of infection in both modern and past populations. Paleopathologists must improve diagnostic criteria and use a standard approach for recording skeletal lesions on archaeological human remains. Adequate contextualization of cultural and environmental conditions is necessary, including site dating and justification for any corrections made for marine or freshwater reservoir effects. Biogeochemical analyses may assess aquatic contributions to diet, physiological changes arising from treponemal disease and its treatments (e.g., mercury), or residential mobility of those affected. Shifting the focus from point of origin to investigating who is affected (e.g., by age/sex or socioeconomic status) and disease distribution (e.g., coastal/ inland, rural/urban) will advance our understanding of the treponemal disease and its impact on people through time.

Value-based health care is increasingly promoted as a strategy for improving care quality by benchmarking outcomes that matter to patients relative to the cost of obtaining those outcomes. To support the shift toward value-based health care in chronic kidney disease (CKD), the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) assembled an international working group of health professionals and patient representatives to develop a standardized minimum set of patient-centered outcomes targeted for clinical use. The considered outcomes and patient-reported outcome measures were generated from systematic literature reviews. Feedback was sought from patients and health professionals. Patients with very high-risk CKD (stages G3a/A3 and G3b/A2-G5, including dialysis, kidney transplantation, and conservative care) were selected as the target population. Using an online modified Delphi process, outcomes important to all patients were selected, such as survival and hospitalization, and to treatment-specific subgroups, such as vascular access survival and kidney allograft survival. Patient-reported outcome measures were included to capture domains of health-related quality of life, which were rated as the most important outcomes by patients. Demographic and clinical variables were identified to be used as case-mix adjusters. Use of these consensus recommendations could enable institutions to monitor, compare, and improve the quality of their CKD care.

OBJECTIVES: Inflammatory periosteal reaction (IPR) on the visceral surfaces of the ribs has been used in bioarchaeology as an indicator of lower respiratory tract disease. This article presents a detailed method for recording IPR on the ribs, even those in severely fragmented states, with the objectives of increasing the consistency of recording and producing true prevalence rates for skeletons so as to improve data comparability between future bioarchaeological studies of lower respiratory tract disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The presence and prevalence of respiratory-related IPR were recorded from three different Sudanese cemetery sites using a detailed method for identifying and recording IPR. Sites with variable preservation were chosen to test the applicability of the method. A flowchart to aid in identification of bony changes is presented. The method requires the recording of IPR on three separate sections of the rib (neck, angle, and shaft) and the allocation of ribs into rib cage regions of upper, upper-middle, middle, lower-middle, and lower. RESULTS: Results demonstrate differences in the distribution of IPR between sites and verify the method's applicability to archeological sites with various levels of skeletal preservation. DISCUSSION: While crude prevalence rates can indicate the number of individuals experiencing lower respiratory tract disease within a site, this method can provide information about the distribution of IPR within the rib cage. This should lead to new ways of distinguishing respiratory diseases within archeological populations. This method also allows for comparability between well-preserved and lesser-preserved sites by accommodating for rib fragmentation.

There is increasing emphasis on patient-centred research to support the development, approval and reimbursement of health interventions that best meet patients' needs. However, there is currently little guidance on how meaningful patient engagement may be achieved. An expert working group, representing a wide range of stakeholders and disciplines, was convened by the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases (ESCEO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Through a structured, collaborative process the group generated practical guidance to facilitate optimal patient engagement in clinical development and regulatory decisions. Patient engagement is a relational process. The principles outlined in this report were based on lessons learned through applied experience and on an extensive dialogue among the expert participants. This practice guidance forms a starting point from which tailoring of the approach to suit different chronic diseases may be undertaken.

BACKGROUND: The International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM) was founded in 2012 to propose consensus-based measurement tools and documentation for different conditions and populations.This article describes how the ICHOM Older Person Working Group followed a consensus-driven modified Delphi technique to develop multiple global outcome measures in older persons. The standard set of outcome measures developed by this group will support the ability of healthcare systems to improve their care pathways and quality of care. An additional benefit will be the opportunity to compare variations in outcomes which encourages and supports learning between different health care systems that drives quality improvement. These outcome measures were not developed for use in research. They are aimed at non researchers in healthcare provision and those who pay for these services. METHODS: A modified Delphi technique utilising a value based healthcare framework was applied by an international panel to arrive at consensus decisions.To inform the panel meetings, information was sought from literature reviews, longitudinal ageing surveys and a focus group. RESULTS: The outcome measures developed and recommended were participation in decision making, autonomy and control, mood and emotional health, loneliness and isolation, pain, activities of daily living, frailty, time spent in hospital, overall survival, carer burden, polypharmacy, falls and place of death mapped to a three tier value based healthcare framework. CONCLUSIONS: The first global health standard set of outcome measures in older persons has been developed to enable health care systems improve the quality of care provided to older persons.

INTRODUCTION: Renal duplication is a relatively common congenital abnormality of the urinary tract, but symptomatic duplex kidney is a rare presentation in adults. Traditionally, the treatment of choice for poorly functioning moiety has been heminephrectomy. There is extensive literature detailing the outcomes of minimally invasive upper pole heminephrectomy, but comparatively little published regarding lower pole resection, especially in adult patients. We present a series of 13 patients who underwent minimally invasive heminephrectomy for duplex kidney. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Over a 6 year period (2011-2017) 13 patients at a single center underwent laparoscopic heminephrectomy for symptomatic duplex kidney with a poorly functioning moiety. A retrospective review of case notes and imaging was undertaken. RESULTS: Eight and 5 patients underwent upper and lower pole heminephrectomies, respectively. Laparoscopic transperitoneal approach was utilized in all cases. Median length of stay was 2 days (range 1 to 16 days). In the upper pole cohort, one patient had a postoperative infection requiring IV antibiotics. In the lower pole cohort by contrast, there were three major complications (60%). Conversion to complete nephrectomy was necessary in one case; one patient had urinary leakage requiring selective embolization and one patient required a second operation to resect remnant calyces. Furthermore, two patients (40%) developed late recurrence of symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Symptomatic duplex kidney is a rare presentation in adults. In our experience, heminephrectomy for non-functioning renal unit is safe and reproducible in experienced hands with no major complications and resolution of symptoms in the majority of patients. We have, however, observed a higher complication rate in those undergoing resection of a lower pole moiety. Alternative management such as uretero-ureterostomy should be considered in these cases.

INTRODUCTION: Traditional approaches to clinical research have, as yet, failed to provide effective treatments for vascular dementia (VaD). Novel approaches to collation and synthesis of data may allow for time and cost efficient hypothesis generating and testing. These approaches may have particular utility in helping us understand and treat a complex condition such as VaD. METHODS: We present an overview of new uses for existing data to progress VaD research. The overview is the result of consultation with various stakeholders, focused literature review and learning from the group's experience of successful approaches to data repurposing. In particular, we benefitted from the expert discussion and input of delegates at the 9th International Congress on Vascular Dementia (Ljubljana, 16-18th October 2015). RESULTS: We agreed on key areas that could be of relevance to VaD research: systematic review of existing studies; individual patient level analyses of existing trials and cohorts and linking electronic health record data to other datasets. We illustrated each theme with a case-study of an existing project that has utilised this approach. CONCLUSIONS: There are many opportunities for the VaD research community to make better use of existing data. The volume of potentially available data is increasing and the opportunities for using these resources to progress the VaD research agenda are exciting. Of course, these approaches come with inherent limitations and biases, as bigger datasets are not necessarily better datasets and maintaining rigour and critical analysis will be key to optimising data use.

BACKGROUND: The Lancet recently sponsored a commission examining the role of surgery in global health. There is a paucity of published information on the cost-effectiveness of surgery in low- and middle-income countries, a key metric in the prioritisation of limited resources. METHODS: All patients undergoing emergency laparotomy, elective and emergency inguinal hernia repair, elective and emergency caesarean section, amputation, fracture manipulation, or fracture fixation over a 3 months period in a single district African hospital were assessed. World Health Organisation global burden of disease (GBD) methodology was used to calculate the disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) saved for each patient (using global and local life expectancy). Fully loaded costs were calculated for each patient's care and providing the overall surgical service. Cost-effectiveness was calculated in year 2012 US$ per DALY saved for each procedure and overall. RESULTS: A total of 428 patients were included, with an overall cost-effectiveness of $10.70 per DALY averted. The cost-effectiveness of individual procedures (global life expectancy) was: Amputation­$17.66; Emergency caesarean section­$7.42; Elective caesarean section­$20.50; Emergency laparotomy­$8.62; Elective hernia repair­$15.26; Emergency hernia repair­$4.36; Fracture/dislocation reduction­$69.03; Fracture/dislocation fixation­$225.89. CONCLUSIONS: Surgery is a highly cost-effective healthcare measure in the setting of an African district hospital. The presented outcomes demonstrate that surgery is on a par with better-recognised and funded interventions such as HIV anti-retrovirals, malaria prevention and diarrhoea treatment. There are recognised limitations with the GBD methodology used here; however, this remains the best way to investigate the cost-effectiveness of health interventions. This study provides useful information on an, at present, under-studied field.

Schmorl's nodes are depressions on vertebrae due to herniation of the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disc into the vertebral body. This study provides an extension of our previous study which analyzed the shape of the lower thoracic spine and found that vertebral morphology was associated with the presence of Schmorl's nodes. Ninety adult individuals from the late Medieval site of Fishergate House, York, and the Post-Medieval site of Coach Lane, North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England, were analysed using 2D geometric morphometrics to identify possible relationships between vertebral morphology and Schmorl's nodes at the thoraco-lumbar junction and in the lumbar spine. A significant correlation was found between vertebral shape and the presence of Schmorl's nodes in the twelfth thoracic vertebrae and the first to third lumbar vertebrae. The findings corroborate previous studies and suggest that vertebral shape may be an important factor in spinal health. It is hypothesized that the pedicle shape of affected vertebrae may not provide adequate structural support for the vertebral bodies, resulting in vertical disc herniation.

The use of ancient DNA in paleopathological studies of tuberculosis has largely been restricted to confirmation of disease identifications made by skeletal analysis; few attempts at obtaining genotype data from archaeological samples have been made because of the need to perform different PCRs for each genetic locus being studied in an ancient DNA extract. We used a next generation sequencing approach involving hybridization capture directed at specific polymorphic regions of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis genome to identify a detailed genotype for a historic strain of M. tuberculosis from an individual buried in the 19th century St. George's Crypt, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. We obtained 664,500 sequencing by oligonucleotide ligation and detection (SOLiD) reads that mapped to the targeted regions of the M. tuberculosis genome; the coverage included 218 of 247 SNPs, 10 of 11 insertion/deletion regions, and the repeat elements IS1081 and IS6110. The accuracy of the SOLiD data was checked by conventional PCRs directed at 11 SNPs and two insertion/deletions. The data placed the historic strain of M. tuberculosis in a group that is uncommon today, but it is known to have been present in North America in the early 20th century. Our results show the use of hybridization capture followed by next generation sequencing as a means of obtaining detailed genotypes of ancient varieties of M. tuberculosis, potentially enabling meaningful comparisons between strains from different geographic locations and different periods in the past.

TANK-binding kinase 1 (TBK1) serves as a key convergence point in multiple innate immune signaling pathways. In response to receptor-mediated pathogen detection, TBK1 phosphorylation promotes production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and type I interferons. Increasingly, TBK1 dysregulation has been linked to autoimmune disorders and cancers, heightening the need to understand the regulatory controls of TBK1 activity. Here, we describe the mechanism by which suppressor of IKKε (SIKE) inhibits TBK1-mediated phosphorylation of interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3), which is essential to type I interferon production. Kinetic analyses showed that SIKE not only inhibits IRF3 phosphorylation but is also a high affinity TBK1 substrate. With respect to IRF3 phosphorylation, SIKE functioned as a mixed-type inhibitor (K(i, app) = 350 nM) rather than, given its status as a TBK1 substrate, as a competitive inhibitor. TBK1 phosphorylation of IRF3 and SIKE displayed negative cooperativity. Both substrates shared a similar Km value at low substrate concentrations (∼50 nM) but deviated >8-fold at higher substrate concentrations (IRF3 = 3.5 µM; SIKE = 0.4 µM). TBK1-SIKE interactions were modulated by SIKE phosphorylation, clustered in the C-terminal portion of SIKE (Ser-133, -185, -187, -188, -190, and -198). These sites exhibited striking homology to the phosphorylation motif of IRF3. Mutagenic probing revealed that phosphorylation of Ser-185 controlled TBK1-SIKE interactions. Taken together, our studies demonstrate for the first time that SIKE functions as a TBK1 substrate and inhibits TBK1-mediated IRF3 phosphorylation by forming a high affinity TBK1-SIKE complex. These findings provide key insights into the endogenous control of a critical catalytic hub that is achieved not by direct repression of activity but by redirection of catalysis through substrate affinity.

The evolutionary history of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) has previously been studied by analysis of sequence diversity in extant strains, but not addressed by direct examination of strain genotypes in archaeological remains. Here, we use ancient DNA sequencing to type 11 single nucleotide polymorphisms and two large sequence polymorphisms in the MTBC strains present in 10 archaeological samples from skeletons from Britain and Europe dating to the second-nineteenth centuries AD. The results enable us to assign the strains to groupings and lineages recognized in the extant MTBC. We show that at least during the eighteenth-nineteenth centuries AD, strains of M. tuberculosis belonging to different genetic groups were present in Britain at the same time, possibly even at a single location, and we present evidence for a mixed infection in at least one individual. Our study shows that ancient DNA typing applied to multiple samples can provide sufficiently detailed information to contribute to both archaeological and evolutionary knowledge of the history of tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis is known to have afflicted humans throughout history and re-emerged towards the end of the 20th century, to an extent that it was declared a global emergency in 1993. The aim of this study was to apply a rigorous analytical regime to the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) DNA in 77 bone and tooth samples from 70 individuals from Britain and continental Europe, spanning the 1st-19th centuries AD. We performed the work in dedicated ancient DNA facilities designed to prevent all types of modern contamination, we checked the authenticity of all products obtained by the polymerase chain reaction, and we based our conclusions on up to four replicate experiments for each sample, some carried out in an independent laboratory. We identified 12 samples that, according to our strict criteria, gave definite evidence for the presence of MTBC DNA, and another 22 that we classified as "probable" or "possible." None of the definite samples came from vertebrae displaying lesions associated with TB. Instead, eight were from ribs displaying visceral new bone formation, one was a tooth from a skeleton with rib lesions, one was taken from a skeleton with endocranial lesions, one from an individual with lesions to the sacrum and sacroiliac joint and the last was from an individual with no lesions indicative of TB or possible TB. Our results add to information on the past temporal and geographical distribution of TB and affirm the suitability of ribs for studying ancient TB.

Leprosy was one of the most outwardly visible diseases in the European Middle Ages, a period during which leprosaria were founded to provide space for the sick. The extant documentary evidence for leprosy hospitals, especially in relation to diet, therapeutic, and medical care, is limited. However, human dental calculus stands to be an important source of information as it provides insight into the substances people were exposed to and accumulated in their bodies during their lives. In the present study, microremains and DNA were analysed from the calculus of individuals buried in the late medieval cemetery of St Leonard, a leprosarium located in Peterborough, England. The results show the presence of ginger (Zingiber officinale), a culinary and medicinal ingredient, as well as evidence of consumption of cereals and legumes. This research suggests that affected individuals consumed ingredients mentioned in medieval medical textbooks that were used to treat regions of the body typically impacted by leprosy. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first study which has identified Zingiber officinale in human dental calculus in England or on the wider European continent.

Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynecological cancer. Here we show that innate immune agonist, dsRNA, directly induces ovarian cancer cell death and identify biomarkers associated with responsiveness to this targeted treatment. Nuclear staining and MTT assays following dsRNA stimulation revealed two subpopulations, sensitive (OVCAR-3, CAOV-3; patient samples malignant 1 and 2) and resistant (DOV-13, SKOV-3). Microarray analysis identified 75 genes with differential expression that further delineated these two subpopulations. qPCR and immunoblot analyses showed increased dsRNA receptor expression after stimulation as compared to resistant and immortalized ovarian surface epithelial cells (e.g., 70-fold with malignant 2, 43-fold with OVCAR-3). Using agonists, antagonists, and shRNA-mediated knockdown of dsRNA receptors, we show that TLR3, RIG-I, and mda5 coordinated a caspase 8/9- and interferon-dependent cell death. In resistant cells, dsRNA receptor overexpression restored dsRNA sensitivity. When dsRNA was combined with carboplatin or paclitaxel, cell viability significantly decreased over individual treatments (1.5- to 7.5-fold). Isobologram analyses showed synergism in dsRNA combinations (CI=0.4-0.82) vs. an additive effect in carboplatin/paclitaxel treatment (CI=1.5-2). Our data identify a predictive marker, dsRNA receptor expression, to target dsRNA responsive populations and show that, in dsRNA-sensitive cells, dsRNA induces apoptosis and enhances the potency of cytotoxic chemotherapeutics.
