APE1/REF-1 (apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease 1 / redox factor-1) is a protein with two domains, with endonuclease function and redox activity. Its main activity described is acting in DNA repair by base excision repair (BER) pathway, which restores DNA damage caused by oxidation, alkylation, and single-strand breaks. In contrast, the APE1 redox domain is responsible for regulating transcription factors, such as AP-1 (activating protein-1), NF-κB (Nuclear Factor kappa B), HIF-1α (Hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha), and STAT3 (Signal Transducers and Activators of Transcription 3). These factors are involved in physiological cellular processes, such as cell growth, inflammation, and angiogenesis, as well as in cancer. In human malignant tumors, APE1 overexpression is associated with lung, colon, ovaries, prostate, and breast cancer progression, more aggressive tumor phenotypes, and worse prognosis. In this review, we explore APE1 and its domain's role in cancer development processes, highlighting the role of APE1 in the hallmarks of cancer. We reviewed original articles and reviews from Pubmed related to APE1 and cancer and found that both domains of APE1/REF-1, but mainly its redox activity, are essential to cancer cells. This protein is often overexpressed in cancer, and its expression and activity are correlated to processes such as proliferation, invasion, inflammation, angiogenesis, and resistance to cell death. Therefore, APE1 participates in essential processes of cancer development. Then, the activity of APE1/REF-1 in these hallmarks suggests that targeting this protein could be a good therapeutic approach.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) induced by non-ionizing radiations emitted from low-power lasers and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) has been used for various therapeutic purposes due to its molecular, cellular, and systemic effects. At the molecular level, experimental data have suggested that PBM modulates base excision repair (BER), which is responsible for restoring DNA damage. There is a relationship between the misfunction of the BER DNA repair pathway and the development of tumors, including breast cancer. However, the effects of PBM on cancer cells have been controversial. Breast cancer (BC) is the main public health problem in the world and is the most diagnosed type of cancer among women worldwide. Therefore, the evaluation of new strategies, such as PBM, could increase knowledge about BC and improve therapies against BC. Thus, this work aims to evaluate the effects of low-power red laser (658 nm) and blue LED (470 nm) on the mRNA levels from BER genes in human breast cancer cells. MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells were irradiated with a low-power red laser (69 J cm-2, 0.77 W cm-2) and blue LED (482 J cm-2, 5.35 W cm-2), alone or in combination, and the relative mRNA levels of the APTX, PolB, and PCNA genes were assessed by reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The results suggested that exposure to low-power red laser and blue LED decreased the mRNA levels from APTX, PolB, and PCNA genes in human breast cancer cells. Our research shows that photobiomodulation induced by low-power red laser and blue LED decreases the mRNA levels of repair genes from the base excision repair pathway in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells.

Among the malignant tumors, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed worldwide, being the most prevalent in women. Photobiomodulation has been used for wound healing, swelling and pain reduction, and muscle repair. The application of photobiomodulation in cancer patients has been controversial. Therefore, a better understanding of radiation-induced effects involved in photobiomodulation on cancer cells is needed. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effects of exposure to low-power lasers and LEDs on cell viability, migration, and invasion in human breast cancer cells. MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells were irradiated with a low-power red laser (23, 46, and 69 J/cm2, 0.77 W/cm2) and blue LED (160, 321, and 482 J/cm2, 5.35 W/cm2), alone or in combination. Cell viability was assessed using the WST-1 assay, cell migration was evaluated using the wound healing assay, and cell invasion was performed using the Matrigel transwell assay. Viability and migration were not altered in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cultures after exposure to low-power red laser and blue LED. However, there was a decrease in cell invasion from the cultures of the two cell lines evaluated. The results suggest that photobiomodulation induced by low-power red laser and blue LED does not alter cell viability and migration but decreases cell invasion in human breast cancer cells.

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) has been used to improve goats reproductive efficiency. This study aimed to (i) evaluate if hCG administered by the intramuscular (i.m.) or intravaginal (i.vag.) route can be detected by a rapid ß-hCG test in blood plasma samples and (ii) document ovarian effects of hCG administered by both routes at the time of artificial insemination (AI) performed 60 h after oestrus synchronization in goats. Twenty-two Alpine goats received two i.m. injections of 30 µg of d-cloprostenol (Prolise®, Tecnopec, São Paulo, Brazil) 7.5 days apart. One day after the onset of oestrus (at the time of AI), the goats were randomly allocated to one of the three groups that received: control (n = 7): 0.3 ml of saline solution intravaginally; hCGi.m. (n = 7): 300 IU of hCG (Vetecor®; Hertape-Calier, São Paulo, Brazil) i.m. and hCGi.vag. (n = 8): 300 IU of hCG deposited intravaginally. Blood samples were drawn at -1, 3, 6, 9 and 24 h after as well as on days 3, 7, 10, 13, 17 and 21 after hCG treatment/AI. All animals tested negative for hCG (ECO Diagnóstica, Corinto, Brazil) at -1 h, and all control animals tested negative throughout the entire blood collection period. All hCGi.m. animals tested positive from 3 h until D3 post-AI but only 50% of hCGi.vag. goats tested positive during the present study. In all animals studied, mean circulating P4 concentrations increased (p < .05) from D3 to D7 after AI and then declined (p < .05) from D10 to D17 in control and hCGi.m. groups and from D17 to D21 in the hCGi.vag. group. Total cross-sectional luteal area (CLA), mean colour Doppler area (DA), DA/CLA, mean high-velocity Doppler area and HVDA/CLA all declined (p < .05) by D17-D21 in all animals studied. In summary: (i) human chorionic gonadotropin could consistently be detected in blood samples using the rapid ß-hCG test only in the hCGi.m. group; and (ii) there were no significant differences in the mean pregnancy rate, circulating P4 concentrations and various luteal parameters studied among Control, hCGi.m. and hCGi.vag. dose.

This study evaluated the possible association between the diurnal variations of climatic factors during the rainy (RS) or less rainy (LS) seasons on the testicular hemodynamics and thermoregulatory responses of hair sheep rams raised in a humid tropical climate. Santa Inês rams (n = 6) underwent evaluation of general and testicular physiological parameters (heart and respiratory rates, internal and scrotal temperatures, internal-scrotal temperature gradient, scrotal distention, and color Doppler ultrasound evaluation of the spermatic cords and spectral analyses of testicular arteries) over six consecutive weeks per season at three separate times daily (morning = 8:00 a.m., noon = 12:00 p.m., and afternoon = 5:00 p.m.) during the RS and LS. Climatic air temperature and relative humidity data were recorded, and the temperature and humidity index (THI) was calculated. Higher thermal challenge was observed in LS relative to RS (air temperature = 28.0 vs. 30.9 °C; relative humidity = 84.1 vs. 69.9%; THI = 80.0 vs. 82.5; P < 0.05). In both seasons, respiratory rate and internal temperature were normal, demonstrating the animals' adaptability. In RS, however, a higher scrotal temperature was recorded in relation to LS (35.0 vs. 34.7 °C; P < 0.05), with a gradual increase from morning to afternoon. Lower resistivity (0.40 vs. 0.64; P < 0.05) and pulsatility (0.55 vs. 1.14; P < 0.05) indices, and a higher rate of high-velocity blood flow of testicular arteries (71.1 vs. 60.6%; P < 0.05) were observed in RS compared to LS. The lowest correlations between testicular hemodynamic, physiological variables, and environmental parameters (P < 0.05) were observed in the morning. In conclusion, testicular thermoregulation and testicular hemodynamics were influenced by the climatic seasons and time of the day, being more efficient in the LS season and with less interference from environmental factors in the morning.

Neuropsychological alterations have been identified in populations heavily exposed to metals with neurotoxic potential, such as manganese (Mn). This study examined the associations between Mn environmental exposure in school-aged children and executive functions, using structural equation modeling. Children, aged between 7 and 12 years (N = 181), were recruited from four elementary schools located in a region that is under the influence of atmospheric emissions from a ferro-manganese alloy plant in the municipality of Simões Filho, Bahia, Brazil. The following cognitive functions were evaluated: Intelligence, Inhibitory Control, Cognitive Flexibility, Verbal and Design Fluency, Verbal and Visual Working Memory and Attention. We performed structural equation modeling to identify the following executive functions latent variables: working memory, inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility. We further analyzed the relations between executive functions and Mn measured in hair (MnH) and toenails (MnTn) with linear mixed models, after controlling for co-variables. A positive effect at the individual level on working memory, inhibition control and cognitive flexibility was observed with MnTn after controlling for co-variables, but no association was found with MnH levels. However, children attending school most environmentally exposed to Mn emissions, which had the highest rate of Mn dust deposition, had the poorest scores on working memory. These findings suggest both benefits and risk of Mn on children's cognitive development.

To evaluate the effects of feeding frequency (FF) and dietary protein/carbohydrate (P/CH) ratios on appetite regulation of gilthead seabream, two practical diets were formulated to include high protein and low carbohydrate (P50/CH10 diet) or low protein and high carbohydrate (P40/CH20 diet) content and each diet was fed to triplicate groups of fish until visual satiation each meal at a FF of 1, 2, or 3 meals per day. Feed intake and feed conversion ratio were higher in fish fed 2 or 3 meals than 1 meal per day and in fish fed the P40/CH20 than the P50/CH10 diet. The specific growth rate was only affected by FF, being higher in fish fed 2 or 3 meals per day than 1 meal per day. Expression of the cocaine-amphetamine-related transcript, corticotropin-releasing hormone, ghrelin receptor-a (ghsr-a), leptin, and neuropeptide y in the brain, cholecystokinin (cck) in the intestine, and leptin and ghrelin in the stomach was not affected by FF or dietary P/CH ratio. This is the first time that ghrelin cells were immune-located in the stomach of gilthead seabream. Fish fed 3 meals per day presented lower cck expression in the brain than those fed twice per day and higher hepatic ghsr-b expression than those fed once per day. Fish fed P40/CH20 diet presented higher hepatic leptin expression than those fed P50/CH10 diet. In conclusion, present results indicate that feeding a P40/CH20 diet at 3 meals a day seems to decrease the satiation feeling of gilthead seabream compared to fish fed higher P/CH ratio diets or fed 1 or 2 meals a day.

OBJECTIVE: Malnutrition is a prevalent condition in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the recently developed GLIM (Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition) in MHD by assessing the agreement, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and survival prediction of GLIM when compared to 7-point subjective global assessment (7p-SGA) and malnutrition inflammation score (MIS). DESIGN AND METHODS: We investigated 2 cohorts: MHDltaly (121 adults from Italy; 67 ± 16 years, 65% men, body mass index 25 ± 5 kg/m2) and MHDBrazil (169 elderly [age > 60 years] from Brazil; 71 ± 7 years, 66% men, body mass index 25 ± 4 kg/m2), followed for all-cause mortality for median 40 and 17 months, respectively. We applied the 2-step approach from GLIM: (1) screening and (2) confirming malnutrition by phenotypic and etiologic criteria. For 7p-SGA and MIS, a score ≤5 and ≥8, respectively, defined malnutrition. RESULTS: Malnutrition was present in 38.8% by GLIM, 25.6% by 7p-SGA, and 29.7% by MIS in the MHDItaly cohort, and in 47.9% by GLIM, 59.8% by 7p-SGA, and 49.7% by MIS in the MHDBrazil cohort. Cohen's kappa coefficient (κ) showed only "fair" agreement between GLIM and SGA (MHDItaly: κ = 0.26, P = .003; MHDBrazil: κ = 0.22, P = .003) and between GLIM and MIS (MHDItaly: κ = 0.33, P < .001; MHDBrazil: κ = 0.25, P = .001). Cox regression analysis showed that all 3 methods were able to predict mortality in crude analysis; however in the adjusted model, the association seemed more consistent and stronger in magnitude for 7p-SGA and MIS. CONCLUSION: In MHD patients, GLIM showed low agreement, sensitivity, and accuracy in identifying malnourished subjects by either 7p-SGA or MIS. Considering the specific wasting characteristics that predominate in MHD, the well-established 7p-SGA and MIS methods may be more useful in this clinical setting.

Boulders are an important material in debris flow and their source is coupled with spheroidal weathering profiles that produce corestones. The goal of this work was to establish the geochemical transformations that produced corestones and distinguished them from the surrounding grus in two tropical granite weathering profiles (P1 and P2). Sampling was not performed in a vertical profile; instead, we gathered 13 (P1) to 16 (P2) samples displaying different weathering degrees (corestone and saprolite) and spatial positions in the profiles. We conducted the geochemistry (EDXRF/EDX and INAA) and mineralogy (petrography and XRD) of the samples. The CIA values ranged from 46 (corestones) to 93 (saprolite). Granite spheroidal weathering under a tropical mountainous slope develops mostly due to feldspar weathering (foremost plagioclase) in the following sequence: porosity growth, kaolinite, and gibbsite crystallization. Zircon weathering stability and its probable mobility as grain along the weathering profile play an important role in REE concentration. Spheroidal weathering is mainly a lixiviation process, yet specific locations (below the individualized corestones) presented REE enrichment due to translocation. They are hosted mainly by clay minerals and, to some extent, by amorphous Fe oxyhydroxide. The evolution of spheroidal weathering results in a vertical patchy weathering profile.

Hypoxia is associated with tumor aggressiveness and poor prognosis, including breast cancer. Low oxygen levels induces global genomic hypomethylation and hypermethylation of specific loci in tumor cells. DNA methylation is a reversible epigenetic modification, usually associated with gene silencing, contributing to carcinogenesis and tumor progression. Since the effects of DNA methyltransferase inhibitor are context-dependent and as there is little data comparing their molecular effects in normoxic and hypoxic microenvironments in breast cancer, this study aimed to understand the gene expression profiles and molecular effects in response to treatment with DNA methyltransferase inhibitor in normoxia and hypoxia, using the breast cancer model. For this, a cDNA microarray was used to analyze the changes in the transcriptome upon treatment with DNA methyltransferase inhibitor (5-Aza-2'-deoxycytidine: 5-Aza-2'-dC), in normoxia and hypoxia. Furthermore, immunocytochemistry was performed to investigate the effect of 5-Aza-2'-dC on NF-κB/p65 inflammation regulator subcellular localization and expression, in normoxia and hypoxia conditions. We observed that proinflammatory pathways were upregulated by treatment with 5-Aza-2'-dC, in both conditions. However, treatment with 5-Aza-2'-dC in normoxia showed a greater amount of overexpressed proinflammatory pathways than 5-Aza-2'-dC in hypoxia. In this sense, we observed that the NF-κB expression increased only upon 5-Aza-2'-dC in normoxia. Moreover, nuclear staining for NF-κB and NF-κB target genes upregulation, IL1A and IL1B, were also observed after 5-Aza-2'-dC in normoxia. Our results suggest that 5-Aza-2'-dC induces a greater inflammatory change, at the molecular levels, in normoxic than hypoxic tumor microenvironment. These data may support further studies and expand the understanding of the DNA methyltransferase inhibitor effects in different tumor contexts.

Lead (Pb) exposure compromises heme synthesis by inhibiting ferrochelatase, forming zinc-protoporphyrin (ZnPP). This study aims to validate a method for the determination of ZnPP by HPLC with fluorescence detection and apply this method to evaluate the extent of Pb exposure of artisanal pottery workers. Extraction procedures were tested using both nonacid and acid liquid-liquid extraction. The former presented a better chromatogram and recovery results. The validated method yielded a good resolution of ZnPP and its free form peaks with acceptable precision and accuracy. Total run time was 15 min and ZnPP peak retention time was 5.6 min. We applied this method to evaluate 39 potters (90% male), mean age 40 years (9-80). The medians (ranges) of blood lead, ZnPP and hemoglobin were 16.0 µg/dl (2.2-71.5), 12.6 µg/dl (4.6-279.8) and 15.1 g/dl (11.0-17.8), respectively. Significant differences were observed for blood lead according to gender, age range (>40 years), direct handling of lead oxide and years of occupation. Significantly higher levels of ZnPP were observed in male potters involved with lead glazing activity. The validated method was shown to be simple with one-step nonacid extraction, good sensitivity, reproducibility and accuracy. Our data shows that these laborers are dangerously exposed to Pb, reflecting the effect on the heme synthesis.

In order to understand the physiological effects of ripeners in sensitive crops, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of subdoses of the ripeners glyphosate, trinexapac-ethyl and sulfometuron methyl commonly used in sugarcane, in the growth of lettuce cultivar 'Lucy Brown' and 'Vanda'. To address the effects of the products in the lettuce physiology, analyses of fresh weight, dry weight, number of leaves, chlorophyll content, quantum efficiency of photosystem II, lipid peroxidation (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), glutathione reductase (GR), guaiacol peroxidase (GPOX) were performed. We observed that among the products tested, glyphosate had minor impact on plant growth, compared to trinexapac-ethyl and sulfometuron methyl. All products induced a decrease in chlorophyll content for both cultivars. Chlorophyll A fluorescence suffered a major reduction with trinexapac-ethyl and sulfometuron methyl in 'Vanda' and no differences were observed for 'Lucy Brown'. MDA content and enzyme quantification varied by cultivar and the sugarcane ripener tested. By disturbing chlorophyll content and quantum efficiency of photosystem II, through these sugarcane ripeners did not have direct mode of action affecting photosystem II, they can cause some level of damage and activate different mechanisms and at different times, in response to stress. In this sense, it is possible to observe that reduced doses of glyphosate, trinexapac ethyl, and sulfometuron methyl affect the development of lettuce at different levels and trigger an oxidative response that was cultivar dependent.

A series of novel functionalized methyl 3-(hetero)arylthieno[3,2-b]pyridine-2-carboxylates 2a-2h were synthesized by C-C Pd-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of methyl 3-bromothieno[3,2-b]pyridine-2-carboxylate with (hetero)aryl pinacol boranes, trifluoro potassium boronate salts or boronic acids. Their antitumoral potential was evaluated in two triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) cell lines-MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-468, by sulforhodamine B assay. Their effects on the non-tumorigenic MCF-12A cells were also evaluated. The results demonstrated that three compounds caused growth inhibition in both TNBC cell lines, with little or no effect against the non-tumorigenic cells. The most promising compound was further studied concerning possible effects on cell viability (by trypan blue exclusion assay), cell proliferation (by bromodeoxyuridine assay) and cell cycle profile (by flow cytometry). The results demonstrated that the GI50 concentration of compound 2e (13 µM) caused a decreased in MDA-MB-231 cell number, which was correlated with a decreased in the % of proliferating cells. Moreover, this compound increased G0/G1 phase and decreased S phases, when compared to control cells (although was not statistic significant). Interestingly, compound 2e also reduced tumor size using an in ovo CAM (chick chorioallantoic membrane) model. This work highlights the potential antitumor effect of a novel methyl 3-arylthieno[3,2-b]pyridine-2-carboxylate derivative.

Several novel methyl 7-[(hetero)arylamino]thieno[2,3-b]pyrazine-6-carboxylates were synthesized by Pd-catalyzed C-N Buchwald-Hartwig cross-coupling of either methyl 7-aminothieno[3,2-b]pyrazine-6-carboxylate with (hetero)arylhalides or 7-bromothieno[2,3-b]pyrazine-6-carboxylate with (hetero)arylamines in good-to-excellent yields (50% quantitative yield), using different reaction conditions, namely ligands and solvents, due to the different electronic character of the substrates. The antitumoral potential of these compounds was evaluated in four human tumor cell lines: gastric adenocarcinoma (AGS), colorectal adenocarcinoma (CaCo-2), breast carcinoma (MCF7), and non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NCI-H460) using the SRB assay, and it was possible to establish some structure-activity relationships. Furthermore, they did not show relevant toxicity against a non-tumor cell line culture from the African green monkey kidney (Vero). The most promising compounds (GI50 ≤ 11 µM), showed some selectivity either against AGS or CaCo-2 cell lines without toxicity at their GI50 values. The effects of the methoxylated compounds 2b (2-OMeC6H4), 2f and 2g (3,4- or 3,5-diOMeC6H3, respectively) on the cell cycle profile and induction of apoptosis were further studied in the AGS cell line. Nevertheless, even for the most active (GI50 = 7.8 µM) and selective compound (2g) against this cell line, it was observed that a huge number of dead cells gave rise to an atypical distribution on the cell cycle profile and that these cells were not apoptotic, which points to a different mechanism of action for the AGS cell growth inhibition.

Widespread resistance against antimalarial drugs thwarts current efforts for controlling the disease and urges the discovery of new effective treatments. Drug repositioning is increasingly becoming an attractive strategy since it can reduce costs, risks, and time-to-market. Herein, we have used this strategy to identify novel antimalarial hits. We used a comparative in silico chemogenomics approach to select Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax proteins as potential drug targets and analyzed them using a computer-assisted drug repositioning pipeline to identify approved drugs with potential antimalarial activity. Among the seven drugs identified as promising antimalarial candidates, the anthracycline epirubicin was selected for further experimental validation. Epirubicin was shown to be potent in vitro against sensitive and multidrug-resistant P. falciparum strains and P. vivax field isolates in the nanomolar range, as well as being effective against an in vivo murine model of Plasmodium yoelii Transmission-blocking activity was observed for epirubicin in vitro and in vivo Finally, using yeast-based haploinsufficiency chemical genomic profiling, we aimed to get insights into the mechanism of action of epirubicin. Beyond the target predicted in silico (a DNA gyrase in the apicoplast), functional assays suggested a GlcNac-1-P-transferase (GPT) enzyme as a potential target. Docking calculations predicted the binding mode of epirubicin with DNA gyrase and GPT proteins. Epirubicin is originally an antitumoral agent and presents associated toxicity. However, its antiplasmodial activity against not only P. falciparum but also P. vivax in different stages of the parasite life cycle supports the use of this drug as a scaffold for hit-to-lead optimization in malaria drug discovery.

It has been suggested that manganese (Mn) plays a fundamental role in the reproductive system through interference with the regulation of the secretion of hormones related to puberty. The objective of this study was to evaluate the environmental exposure to Mn and its effects on the endocrine regulation of hormones related to puberty in school-aged children living near a ferro-manganese alloy plant. Toenails, occipital hair, and blood samples were collected from 225 children, between 7 and 12 years of age, in four elementary schools in Simões Filho, Bahia, Brazil, who were exposed to different Mn levels owing to different Mn dust deposition rates. The Mn content was determined in the toenails (MnTn), hair (MnH), and blood (MnB), in addition to blood lead levels (PbB), by using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Luteinizing hormone (LH), prolactin (PRL), estradiol (E2), testosterone (T), and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were determined by using a chemiluminescence method. Of the total participants, 50.2% were boys, with an average age of 9 years. PRL values were higher in children attending the school with a higher Mn deposition rate (p < 0.004). We observed that MnTn was positively correlated with PRL levels and exhibited a non-linear association with LH levels. None of the tested Mn biomarkers were associated with E2, T, or TSH levels. To date, despite several animal studies that have focused on the correlation between Mn exposure and the endocrine regulation of hormones and pubertal development, very few studies have reported a similar relationship between environmental Mn effects and the human endocrine system. Our findings support the hypothesis that elevated exposure to Mn in children may be associated with hormonal imbalances that might trigger the early onset of puberty.

Degradation of areas reduces nutrient cycling in the environment, and mango tree (Mangifera indica L.) cultivated in orchard could act as an alternative for degrading areas rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutrients contribution to soil via litter in mango orchard, which was used as an alternative for degrading areas rehabilitation in the northeast of Pará, Brazil. The study was performed in the forest, mango orchard, and degrading area located in Salinópolis, Pará, Brazil. The total production and fractions (leaves, branches, reproductive parts, and miscellaneous), as well as the nutrient production and their contribution to the soil and litter decomposition were monitored. Mango trees have produced litter in similar quantities in the forest, 7.06 and 8.95 Mg ha-1 yr-1, respectively. However, mango orchard has denoted litter production seasonality, which was concentrated in less rainy season. Leaves fraction has presented larger contribution to litter total production. Moreover, the contribution of nutrients coming from mango orchard to the soil via litter was like forest. The decomposition was more rapid in mango orchard during the rainy season, when it took 5.51 months to decompose 50% of litter. Mango orchard may be used as an alternative to the rehabilitation of degrading areas due to its contribution to nutrient cycling and soil protection.

Excessive exposure to Mn can lead to its accumulation in the brain with neurotoxic consequences. In children, elevated Mn has been associated with deficits in certain neuropsychological domains such as cognition, motor function, memory and attention, and in some instances, hyperactivity and behavioral problems. The aim of this study was to evaluate behavioral effects in school-aged children living near a ferro-manganese alloy plant and examine their association with Mn exposure. Occipital hair, toenails and blood samples were collected from 225 children (7-12 years old) enrolled in four elementary schools with different levels of exposure to Mn, based on dust Mn deposition rates. Full data set collection was completed and run from 165 children. Mn in hair (MnH), toenails (MnTn), blood (MnB) and blood lead levels (PbB) were determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Children's behavior was assessed with the Child Behavior Check List (CBCL) reported by parents. Median levels and range of MnH, MnT and MnB were, respectively, 0.73 µg/g (0.16-8.79), 0.84 µg/g (0.15-9.29) and 8.98 µg/L (1.51-40.43). Median and range of PbB were 1.2 µg/dL (0.2-15.6). MnH and MnB were not associated with any scale of the CBCL behavior scores. We found a positive association between logMnTn and raw total CBCL score (ß = 10.17, p = 0.034), adjusting for sex, age, maternal IQ and logPbB. Analyses using Generalized Additive Model showed non-linear associations between MnTn and externalizing behavior (p = 0.035), as well as with the related subscales: aggressive behavior (p = 0.045) and rule-breaking behavior (p = 0.024). Further positive associations were observed between MnTn and thought problems (p = 0.031) and social problems (p = 0.027). These findings corroborate previous studies showing an association between Mn exposures and externalizing behavior. Our results suggest that toenail Mn, as a biomarker of environmental exposure, is associated with disruptive behavior in children living near a ferro-manganese alloy plant.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess whether diminished muscle mass, diminished muscle strength, or both conditions (sarcopenia) are associated with worse nutritional status, poor quality of life (QoL), and hard outcomes, such as hospitalization and mortality, in elderly patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: This is a multicenter observational longitudinal study that included 170 patients on MHD (age 70 ± 7 years, 65% male) from 6 dialysis centers. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People defines sarcopenia as the presence of both low muscle mass by appendicular skeletal + low muscle function by handgrip strength. This study evaluated the clinical and nutritional status (laboratory, anthropometry, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, 7-point subjective global assessment) and QoL (Kidney Disease Quality of Life) at baseline. Hospitalization and mortality were recorded during 36 months. RESULTS: Reduced muscle mass was observed in 64% of the patients, reduced muscle strength in 52%, and sarcopenia in 37%. The group with sarcopenia was older, had a higher proportion of men and showed worse clinical and nutritional conditions when compared with patients without sarcopenia. Although reduced muscle mass was strongly associated with poor nutritional status, low muscle strength was associated with worse QoL domains. In the multivariate Cox analyses adjusted by age, gender, dialysis vintage, and diabetes mellitus, low muscle strength alone and sarcopenia were associated with higher hospitalization, and sarcopenia was a predictor of mortality. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, in this sample, comprised of elderly patients on MHD, sarcopenia was associated with worse nutritional and clinical conditions and was a predictor of hospitalization and mortality.
