RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common and important complication of burn injury. Although there are numerous adult studies, data regarding AKI in pediatric burn patients are scarce. Here, we aimed to evaluate the frequency, clinical features, and prognosis of AKI among pediatric burn injury patients. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study. Patients aged between 1 month and 18 years who had been followed up between the years 2011 and 2017 were included, and patients with previous kidney disease were excluded. Demographic data, laboratory and clinical variables, management strategies, and outcome data were obtained from the hospital records. Factors associated with AKI were determined by logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: A total of 697 patients had been followed up, and 87 (12.5%) had AKI. Older age, refugee status, prolonged duration between the incident and time of hospitalization, presence of sepsis, severity and type of burn, volume of fluid administration, intubation status, and accompanying organ failure were all associated with the development of AKI. According to multivariate logistic regression analysis, the most statistically significant factors associated with the development of AKI were older age and increased serum hemoglobin values. In terms of outcomes, length of stay and mortality increased in patients with AKI when compared with patients without AKI. CONCLUSION: Similar to adults, AKI is an important and common complication of burn injury in pediatric burn patients and is associated with increased length of stay, morbidity, and mortality. Early recognition and prompt and appropriate management are crucial to avoid morbidity and mortality.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: We sought to determine the effectiveness and utility of two-dimensional shear-wave sonoelastography (2D-SW-SE) in the diagnosis and postoperative follow-up of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-three infants were included in the study, 13 in the IHPS group and 10 in the control group (CG). Preoperative B-mode ultrasonography measurements (longitudinal length and single-wall thickness of the pylorus) and 2D-SW-SE measurements (pylorus tissue stiffness and shear-wave propagation speed) were compared between the groups. The infants with IHPS then underwent Ramstedt pyloromyotomy and were invited for follow-ups on the tenth day and the first, third, and sixth months postoperatively. Measurements taken at the follow-ups were compared with the preoperative values. RESULTS: No differences were found between the groups regarding age, gender, body weight, or week of birth. The pyloric lengths in the IHPS group were longer than in the CG (p < 0.001), and the single-wall thicknesses were thicker (p < 0.001). The pylorus in the IHPS group was four times stiffer than in the CG (27.4 kPa versus 7.66 kPa), and the shear-wave propagation speed in the tissue was higher (1.34 m/s versus 2.69 m/s; p < 0.001). Both values decreased over time in the IHPS group and were normal by the third postoperative month. CONCLUSIONS: 2D-SW-SE can be used as an assistive imaging tool alongside B-mode ultrasound for diagnosing IHPS. It can also be used to identify inadequate surgery by detecting whether the pyloric tissue has softened at follow-up.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Intestinal malrotation, characterized by abnormal intestinal positioning, can lead to severe complications like volvulus and internal hernias, especially in neonates and children. Our aim was to evaluate the diagnostic methods, treatment results and postoperative follow-up of pediatric patients treated for intestinal malrotation. METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed medical records of pediatric patients who underwent surgery for intestinal malrotation between January 2013 and January 2022. Data on demographics, symptoms, diagnostic approaches, surgical interventions, and postoperative outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS: The study included 45 patients, with a male predominance (68.8%). Ages ranged from 1 day to 15 years, averaging 1.54 years. Presenting symptoms were acute abdomen (n = 21) and chronic abdominal pain with vomiting (n = 24). Diagnoses were established via physical exams and imaging, including upper gastrointestinal contrast studies and abdominal ultrasonography. All patients received the Ladd procedure, with some requiring necrotic bowel resection due to volvulus. CONCLUSION: The diagnosis and management of pediatric intestinal malrotation present significant challenges due to its variable symptoms and potential for life-threatening complications. Early and accurate diagnosis, followed by appropriate surgical management, is crucial. This study emphasizes the importance of diligent postoperative follow-up to identify and mitigate complications, particularly in younger and severely affected patients.

RESUMO

AIM: To identify the risk factors associated with intussusception in children with immunoglobulin A vasculitis (IgAV)-gastrointestinal (GI) tract involvement and to evaluate the outcomes of medical treatment and surgical intervention and the course of patients with intussusception. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in 157 patients under 18 years of age who were followed up with the diagnosis of IgAV-GI tract involvement between January 2015 and September 2022. The characteristics of the patients who developed intussusception were evaluated in detail. RESULTS: One hundred and fifty-seven patients with GI tract involvement were included in the study. The mean age of patients with IgAV-GI tract involvement was 8.7 ± 3.7 years. The female-to-male ratio was 1:1.5. Intussusception was detected in 14 patients (8.9%). Two patients (14.3%) underwent surgery, and the remaining 12 patients (85.7%) had their medical therapy intensified. Patients with GI tract involvement were divided into two groups as with (n = 14) and without (n = 143) intussusception. There was a statistically significant difference between the groups in the time from the onset of the first symptom of IgAV to the onset of steroids (P = 0.001). There were no statistically significant differences between the groups in age at onset of IgAV, gender distribution, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein levels. CONCLUSIONS: The time from the onset of the first symptom of IgAV to the start of steroids is a risk factor for the development of intussusception in patients with IgAV-GI tract involvement. In these patients, medical treatment usually reduces intussusception without the need for surgical intervention.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Authors widely use pulse oximetry in clinical monitoring of heart rate (HR) and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) by attachment to the fingers; however, there can be a need for an alternative attachment site, especially for burned patients. We investigate the availability of a pulse oximeter probe attached to the penile shaft as an alternative site in pediatric male patients if all extremities became unavailable for pulse oximetry measurement due to severe burn and/or trauma. METHODS: We designed a prospective comparative study in a training and research hospital. After local ethical committee approval, pediatric male cases eligible for penile and extremity pulse measurements were evaluated during general anesthesia for medical dressing and/or grafting due to severe burns. One probe was attached to the fingers of the unburned extremity, and the other was to the penile shaft. Furthermore, we recorded SpO2and HR values at 5-min intervals; 0th (baseline), 5th, 10th and 15th minutes. We compared HR and SpO2values measured by the finger probe with those measured by the penile probe. RESULTS: Data of 51 patients (median age, 2.9 years (interquartile range, 2.0-5.0 years)) in whom the duration of dressing was at least 15min were analyzed. There was no significant difference either in comparisons of hemodynamic measurements (HR and SpO2 ) obtainedby finger probe and by a penile probe for each measurement time. The Bland-Altman plot analysis reveals agreement for penile and finger probes with a mean bias value between 0.20 and 0.37 on HR and between 0.43 and -0.20 on SpO2. DISCUSSION: This clinical trial demonstrated that pulse oximetry measurement under nonhypoxic conditions we could perform confidently using penile probes in pediatric male patients whose extremities are unavailable for measurement.

RESUMO

Background/aim: The clinical presentation of pediatric coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is associated with a milder disease course than the adult COVID-19 syndrome. The disease course of COVID-19 has three clinicobiological phases: initiation, propagation, and complication. This study aimed to assess the pathobiological alterations affecting the distinct clinical courses of COVID-19 in pediatric age groups versus the adult population. We hypothesized that critical biogenomic marker expressions drive the mild clinical presentations of pediatric COVID-19. Materials and methods: Blood samples were obtained from 72 patients with COVID-19 hospitalized at Ankara City Hospital between March and July 2021. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated using Ficoll-Paque and density-gradient sedimentation. The groups were compared using a t-test and limma analyses. Mean standardized gene expression levels were used to hierarchically cluster genes employing Euclidean Gene Cluster 3.0. The expression levels of identified genes were determined using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Results: This study found that ANPEP gene expression was significantly downregulated in the pediatric group (p < 0.05, FC: 1.57) and IGF2R gene expression was significantly upregulated in the adult group (p < 0.05, FC: 2.98). The study results indicated that the expression of critical biogenomic markers, such as the first-phase (ACE2 and ANPEP) and second-phase (EGFR and IGF2R) receptor genes, was crucial in the genesis of mild clinical presentations of pediatric COVID-19. ANPEP gene expression was lower in pediatric COVID-19. Conclusion: The interrelationship between the ANPEP and ACE2 genes may prevent the progression of COVID-19 from initiation to the propagating phase in pediatric patients. High IGF2R gene expression could potentially contribute to a protective effect and may be a contributing factor for the mild clinical course observed in pediatric patients.

RESUMO

In the 10th month of the pandemic, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination was given first to healthcare workers in Turkey after receiving emergency use approval from the Ministry of Health. This study, which was performed at the COVID-19 reference center in Ankara (the capital of Turkey) aimed to evaluate the seroconversion rate of the CoronaVac vaccine. The anti-spike immunoglobulin G response to the two-dose vaccination was retrospectively examined in healthcare workers who had no previous history of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. The postvaccine seroconversion rate was investigated by measuring the antibody levels of healthcare workers who had received CoronaVac. Vaccination was administered as 600 SU in 28-day intervals. The healthcare workers' anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin G levels were used to determine the seroconversion rate 2 months after the second dose of the vaccine. Of the healthcare workers, 22.9% (n = 155) were seronegative. The younger the age of the participant, the higher the level of anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin G. Furthermore, anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin G levels were much higher in women than men.

RESUMO

AIM: Most acute appendicitis (AA) patients present first to physicians who are not paediatric surgeons. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a relationship between the speciality of the first physician and delays in diagnosis and morbidity in AA. METHODS: The study was planned prospectively. Patients who were operated on between 15 June 2017 and 2018 due to abdominal pain were included. Demographic data of the patients, speciality of the doctors who examined them and postoperative complications were recorded. The patients were divided into three groups: those who were diagnosed at the first examination, those who were diagnosed at the second examination and those who were diagnosed after three or more examinations. RESULTS: A total of 414 patients were included in the study. There were 255 (61.6%) patients in group 1, 135 (32.6%) patients in group 2 and 24 (5.8%) patients in group 3. The mean age of the patients in group 3 was lower (P < 0.05). Postoperative complications and hospital stay were higher in group 3 (P < 0.05). While 91.8% of the patients in group 1 were examined by a paediatrician, this rate was significantly lower in the other groups (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: If children presenting with abdominal pain are evaluated primarily by paediatricians, consultation with paediatric surgeons is faster. The awareness of doctors of other specialities should be increased through regular periodic training.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the healing effects of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) on experimental testicular torsion in rats. METHODS: Three groups consisting of 10 Wistar albino rats were created. In Group I, the left testicle was explored and relocated in the scrotum without any attempt to modify it. In Group II, the left testicle underwent torsion for three h and then was detorsed and relocated. In Group III, in addition to torsion and detorsion, BM-MSCs were administered intratesticularly. The rats were sacrificed on the seventh day, and the healing status of the testicles was investigated with histopathological and biochemical analyses. BM-MSC involvement was investigated by immunofluorescence microscopy. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 15.0. A p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant for all variables. RESULTS: Immunofluorescence microscopy showed that BM-MSCs were located around the Leydig cells in Group III. Under light microscopy, the mean Johnsen Score of Group III was significantly higher than that of Group II (p = 0.035). The interleukin-10 (IL-10) level was significantly higher in Group III compared to Group II (p = 0.003). While the malondialdehyde (MDA) values in Group I (the control group) were lower than in the other groups (p = 0.037), the superoxide dismutase (SOD) values were similar (p = 0.158). Although there was no statistically significant difference between Group II and Group III in terms of MDA, it was lower in Group III. Although the tissue SOD levels were higher in Group III than in Group II, the difference was not statistically significant. DISCUSSION: : This study has demonstrated that BM-MSCs significantly corrected the Johnsen Score and increased anti-inflammatory cytokine levels after testicular torsion. BM-MSCs can be used in testicular torsion as supportive therapy to minimize tissue damage.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The most common thoracic injury in children, resulting in trauma, is pulmonary contusion (PC). Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are used in wound healing and many other diseases. This study aims to examine the effects of BM-MSCs on PC healing in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 45 male Wistar albino rats were used. Four groups were formed. BM-MSCs were labeled with the green fluorescent protein. PC was observed in the control group. In group II, PC occured and left to spontaneous healing. In group III, PC formed and BM-MSCs were given. In group IV, BM-MSCs were given without PC formation. Subjects were sacrificed 1 week later. Whether there was any difference in terms of BM-MSC involvement and lung injury score was investigated. Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 17.0, software (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL), and p value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: BM-MSCs were collected much more in the lungs in group III than in group IV. Group III had a lower lung injury score value than group II. CONCLUSION: The greater involvement of the BM-MSCs in the injury site, and further reductions in lung injury score suggest that BM-MSCs are contributing to the healing of the injury. The use of BM-MSCs in risky patients with diffuse PC may be an alternative treatment to conventional methods.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and the role of therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) in treatment of children with severe MIS-C. In addition, we assessed demographic data, clinical features, laboratory abnormalities, underlying conditions, treatments, and outcomes. Patients with severe MIS-C who were admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) between September 01 and October 05, 2020 were included in this observational, descriptive, retrospective study. The data collected included the patients' demographic data, presenting symptoms, clinical features, laboratory parameters, diagnostic investigations, and medications. Of 27 children with MIS-C, 63 % were male. The median age of the patients was nine years. Intravenous immunoglobulin and corticosteroids were used for treatment in 100 % of the patients, anakinra in 51.8 %, vasopressors in 85.1 %, noninvasive mechanical ventilation in 25.9 %, and invasive mechanical ventilation in 18.5 %. Ten of the 27 patients (37 %) underwent TPE. In the patients who underwent TPE, the median PELOD score was 21 (IQR: 11-30.25) before TPE and 10 (IQR: 10-11) after TPE (p < 0.001). Moreover, their median left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was 52 % (IQR: 49.25 %-55 %) before TPE and median LVEF was 66.5 (IQR: 58 %-68.5 %) after TPE (p = 0.012). The median number of TPE sessions was three (IQR: 2-4.75). The mortality rate of the patients with severe MIS-C admitted to the PICU was 7.4 %. We suggest that TPE should be considered as a therapeutic option in children with severe MIS-C. Early initiation of TPE followed by immunomodulatory therapy in critically ill children with MIS-C may help improve clinical and laboratory outcomes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Although the initial reports of COVID-19 cases in children described that children were largely protected from severe manifestations, clusters of paediatric cases of severe systemic hyperinflammation and shock related to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection began to be reported in the latter half of April 2020. A novel syndrome called "multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children" (MIS-C) shares common clinical features with other well-defined syndromes, including Kawasaki disease, toxic shock syndrome and secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis/macrophage activation syndrome. Our objective was to develop a protocol for the evaluation, treatment and follow-up of patients with MIS-C. METHODS: The protocol was developed by a multidisciplinary team. We convened a multidisciplinary working group with representation from the departments of paediatric critical care, cardiology, rheumatology, surgery, gastroenterology, haematology, immunology, infectious disease and neurology. Our protocol and recommendations were based on the literature and our experiences with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. After an agreement was reached and the protocol was implemented, revisions were made on the basis of expert feedback. CONCLUSION: Children may experience acute cardiac decompensation or other organ system failure due to this severe inflammatory condition. Therefore, patients with severe symptoms of MIS-C should be managed in a paediatric intensive care setting, as rapid clinical deterioration may occur. Therapeutic approaches for MIS-C should be tailored depending on the patients' phenotypes. Plasmapheresis may be useful as a standard treatment to control hypercytokinemia in cases of MIS-C with severe symptoms. Long-term follow-up of patients with cardiac involvement is required to identify any sequelae of MIS-C.

RESUMO

AIM: Trauma is the most common cause of death in childhood. Tissue damage, ischaemia-reperfusion injury and inflammatory response are mainly responsible for increasing free oxygen radicals. In this study, we aimed to investigate the use of thiol-disulphide and ischaemia-modified albumin levels as a diagnostic laboratory parameter in trauma children. METHODS: Of 202 children, 101 were hospitalised in the paediatric surgical intensive care unit with trauma, and 101 were healthy children. Levels of native thiol (-SH), total thiol (SH + SS), dynamic disulphide (SS), dynamic disulphide (SS)/total thiol (SH + SS), albumin and ischaemic modified albumin (IMA) were measured from the sera of patients and healthy volunteers. For statistical analyses, SPSS 17.0 was used. Mann-Whitney U and paired correlation tests were used where appropriate. P < .05 was considered significant. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients in the trauma group (boys: 61 girls: 40) was 7.88 years and the control group was 8.00 years. In the trauma group, 86 children were exposed to blunt trauma, 15 children had penetrating trauma and 54 patients had multiple trauma. Surgical procedures were performed on 17 patients. In the trauma group, native thiol, total thiol, dynamic disulphide/total thiol, albumin and IMA levels were significantly lower than that of the control (P < .001), and their dynamic disulphide (P = .001) was higher compared with the control. There was no difference thiol-disulphide parameters in trauma groups sub-division as surgery (n = 17) vs follow-up (n = 84) groups or multiple trauma (n = 54) vs isolated organ trauma (n = 47) groups or penetrating (n = 15) or blunt trauma (n = 86) groups. CONCLUSION: Thiol-disulphide balance and IMA levels show changes in favour of oxidative stress in children with trauma; however, it cannot be used as a laboratory marker that helps to show the system and organ affected by the trauma and to decide the surgical intervention.

RESUMO

Background/aim: We evaluated the feasibility of producing splints with 3D printer technology to prevent contractures in burned children in our clinical prospective study. Materials and methods: After approvals, children with burns greater than 2nd degree were included in the study. Age, sex, burn percentages, printing time, filament types, number of filament trials, splint suitability, patient and doctor comments, preclinical trials' significances and financial impact were evaluated statistically. Results: Seventy-six trials were conducted on 18 patients. Fourteen of the patients were male and 4 are female. Average ages of boys and girls were 5 and 3, respectively. Burn percentage was 36.9 ± 13. Polylactic acid (PLAFlex), polyurethane (PolyFlex), semiflexible copolyester (nGenFlex), and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) were the main filaments that were used in the study. Printing time differed from 4 to 29 h according to body regions. Splints were suitable for 81.25% in upper extremity, for 66.7% in lower extremity, and for 100% in mouth. Burn percentage was significantly correlated with total number of filament (p = 0.049). Other statistical evaluations were insignificant. Conclusion: The 3D printer seems to be useful in children with burns. However, difficulties caused by some reasons like production must be overcome. By increasing clinical experience, this emerging custom-made technology may become standard, and documented problems can be solved.

RESUMO

Background/aim: Iatrogenic vas deferens injury is one of the most serious complications of operations in the inguinal region. Vasovasostomy is performed as treatment. However, stenosis is common after vasovasostomy. Oligospermia or azoospermia may develop and result in infertility. This study aimed to investigate the effect of amniotic membrane on healing in vas deferens injuries. Materials and methods: Four groups consisting of 10 rats each were formed. No procedure was performed in Group-I. In Group- II, the left vas deferens was transected and left to spontaneous healing. In Group-III, the left vas deferens was transected, and end- to-end anastomosis was performed. In Group-IV, the left vas deferens was transected, end-to-end anastomosis was performed, and it was closed with a wrapping of amniotic membrane on the anastomosis line. Rats were sacrificed after 60 days, and each left vas deferens was evaluated. Lumen patency was checked by passing methylene blue through the vas deferens. Subsequently, the vas deferens was evaluated both macroscopically and histopathologically. Data were evaluated using SPSS version 21.0. p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant for all variables. Results: The anastomosis lines in Group-IV healed better than those in Group-III, and less stenosis was observed. There were differences between the groups in terms of luminal patency (p = 0.009), adhesions to surrounding tissues (p = 0.02) and separation of the ends of the vas deferens (p = 0.03). Conclusion: We observed improvement on luminal patency and histology of rat vas deferens injury after surrounding human amniotic membrane on the transected and repaired surface. Further studies are needed to apply this promising result on human beings.

RESUMO

AIM: We aimed to determine predictive factors for predicting cystobiliary fistulas (CBF) in children after treatment of liver hydatid cyst (LHD). METHODS: The records of patients who were treated for LHD between 01.06.2009 and 1.06.2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Age, sex, laboratory test results, size and number of cysts, method of first intervention (percutaneous or surgery), whether or not CBF developed and how it was treated were investigated. Among findings, those could be predictive were investigated. Data were evaluated with SPSS 21.0 program, p < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Of the 97 patients, 48 (49.5%) were male, 49 (50.5%) female, the mean age was 11.2 years, Eighty patients had right (82.5%), 13 had left, and 4 had bilobar involvement. As first intervention, surgery was performed in 39 (40.2%); percutaneous treatment was performed in 58 (59.8%) patients. In 8 patients (20.5%) in surgery group and in 6 patients (10.3%) in percutaneous group, totally in 14 patients (14.4%), CBF developed. The mean cyst diameter of CBF-developed group was 114.36 mm, and of CBF-undeveloped group was 74.30 mm. There was no statistically significant differences between groups in terms of age, sex, involved lobe, other organ involvement, and preoperative results (p > 0.5). There was a significant relationship between the cyst diameter and the rate of CBF development in both surgical and percutaneous groups (p < 0.05). ROC analysis was performed, and the cut-off value for the development of CBF detected as 69 mm for children. Since obstructive jaundice seen in adults is not common in children, an increase in liver function tests and bilirubin levels were not seen in our patients. CONCLUSION: A significant correlation was found only between the size of the cyst and developing CBF. Cysts greater than 69 mm have a higher risk of developing CBF after both percutaneous and surgical treatment and should be closely monitored.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this study was to describe and report the results of our new pediatric inguinal hernia repair technique, in which single-port laparoscopic percutaneous extraperitoneal closure (SPEC) technique was modified by using optical foreign-body forceps (OFF) of the rigid bronchoscope. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 2012 and January 2014, a total of 79 children who were operated using SPEC assisted with OFF (SPEC-OFF) were included in this study. Demographic and clinical features of the children were obtained and reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: Ninety-nine hernia repairs were performed on a total of 79 children (51 boys, 28 girls). All of the patients were operated by SPEC-OFF without the need of introducing extra forceps, with or without an additional trocar. The mean operating time was 17.6 ± 5.5 min. The mean follow-up period was 17.5 ± 7.1 months. There were six recurrences (two boys, four girls). No wound infection, hydroceles or testicular atrophy occurred in any patients during post-surgery follow-up. The technique left a very small scar with excellent cosmesis in the umbilicus and groin area. CONCLUSIONS: SPEC-OFF is a simple, safe and effective technique for laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair, and for determining contralateral hernia. There is no need to use additional working forceps for the technique and the surgeon can perform the procedure without any assistance for laparoscope.

RESUMO

Burn injuries are a serious emergency. Most burn injuries in children can be treated as outpatients. The aim of this study was to present the clinical and epidemiologic characteristics of pediatric burn injuries treated in our outpatient burn clinic. This study included pediatric patients treated in an outpatient burn clinic over an eight-year period. The demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into four groups according to their age groups, and the differences between the groups were investigated. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics, Version 25.0. P<0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. Of the total 5,167 patients, 2,811 (54.4%) were male. Scald burns were the most common cause of burns (81.4%). Contact burns accounted for 12.2% of all burns. There were no differences between sexes for any variable. The highest incidence was seen in children in the 2-5-year-old age group (28.3%). There were differences between age groups in terms of sex, burn area, burn visit, burn type, burn location, need for wound dressing under anesthesia, and need for grafting. Among the patients, 4.9% were hospitalized due to the need for wound dressing under anesthesia. However, most of the patients (95.1%) were treated as outpatients. In conclusion, the majority of pediatric burn patients can be treated as outpatients. This allows pediatric patients to complete treatment in a psychologically comfortable environment and have low complication rates. Outpatient treatment should become the standard for children who are suitable for outpatient follow-up and who have home support.
