RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin D supplementation has shown promise in averting asthma. However, the association between 25(OH)D levels and asthma prevention in various demographic groups remains inconclusive. Here, we explore this relationship in the context of overweight and obese individuals in the United States. METHODS: We scrutinized cross-sectional data derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2007 and 2018. This dataset encompasses comprehensive information about asthma patients with a body mass index greater than 25 kg/m2, in addition to data regarding 25(OH)D concentration and other pertinent variables. Among the 3889 participants, 16.2% (631/3889) reported a history of asthma, constituting 1765 (45.4%) males and 2124 (54.6%) females. The median age was 56.0 years, with a standard deviation of 16.0 years. We conducted restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression analysis to assess the correlation between 25(OH)D levels and asthma. RESULTS: After adjusting for confounders, compared to individuals with lower 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration (group1 ≤ 46.6 nmol/L), the adjusted odds ratios (OR) for asthma in group2 (46.7-62 nmol/L), group3 (62.1-78.2 nmol/L), and group4 (≥78.3 nmol/L) were 0.68 (95% CI: 0.49-0.94, p < 0.021), 0.65 (95% CI: 0.47-0.88, p < 0.006), and 0.83 (95% CI: 0.61-1.12, p < 0.22), respectively. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression analysis revealed a nonlinear U-shaped curve (p = 0.017) with an inflection point at approximately 84.95 nmol/L. CONCLUSIONS: High levels of 25(OH)D are correlated with a diminished prevalence of asthma among overweight and obese individuals in the United States.

Vitamin D supplementation may reduce the incidence of asthma in the overweight and obese individuals.A u-shaped association was observed between 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and asthma, with an inflection point of 84.95 nmol/L.Presenting supportive evidence for vitamin D supplementation in the overweight and obese individuals.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: CD44 has been reported to be involved with tumor growth and metastasis and has also been implicated as a CSC marker in head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC). However, the prognostic value of CD44 still remains controversial; hence, we investigated the correlation between CD44 and the clinicopathological features of HNSCC by meta-analysis. METHODS: A comprehensive search was performed using PubMed, ISI web of Science and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) up to April 2013. Only studies with immunohistochemical staining of HNSCC were considered. Data on TNM classification, tumor grade, disease free survival and 3- or 5-year overall survival rate were extracted. RESULTS: Thirty studies with 2102 patients met the inclusion criteria for the meta-analysis. Fifteen studies used anti-pan-CD44 antibody, 9 used anti-CD44-v6 antibody, 2 used anti-CD44-v3 and 2 used anti-CD44s antibody, 1 used anti-CD44-v9, and 1 used anti-CD44-v6,-v3 and -v4-5 simultaneously. The total percentage of CD44 expression was 57.8%, with 49.3% in oral cancer patients, 66.4% in pharynx and 54.7% in larynx cancer patients expressing CD44. No significant correlation between clinical features and CD44 expression was revealed for oral cancer patients, but CD44 was shown to be associated with advanced T categories (larynx: RR = 1.33, 95% CI 1.01-1.76; larynx & pharynx RR = 1.21, 95% CI 1.08-1.35), worse N categories (larynx: RR = 2.53, 95% CI 1.99-3.21; larynx & pharynx RR = 1.95, 95% CI 1.35-2.82), higher tumor grades (larynx & pharynx RR = 1.71, 95% CI 1.04-2.79) and 5-year OS rates (larynx: RR = 0.62, 95% CI 0.47-0.83; larynx & pharynx RR = 0.66, 95% CI 0.47-0.94) in patients with laryngeal and pharyngolaryngeal cancer. In stratified analysis, pan-CD44 and CD44-v6 expression were both correlated with 5-year OS rate of patients with laryngeal (CD44: RR = 0.66, 95% CI 0.46-0.95; CD44-v6 RR = 0.53, 95% CI 0.37-0.77) and pharyngolaryngeal cancer (CD44: RR = 0.56, 95% CI 0.34-0.93; CD44-v6 RR = 0.53, 95% CI 0.37-0.77). CONCLUSIONS: Our analysis suggested that CD44 is related to worse T category, N category, tumor grade and prognosis, in pharyngeal and laryngeal cancer, but no clear association was revealed between CD44 expression and oral cancer.

RESUMO

Gel electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries continue to replace the organic liquid electrolytes in conventional batteries due to their advantages of being less prone to leakage and non-explosive and possessing a high modulus of elasticity. However, the development of gel electrolytes has been hindered by their generally low ionic conductivity at room temperature and high interfacial impedance with electrodes. In this paper, a poly (vinylidene fluoride)-hexafluoropropylene copolymer (PVdF-HFP) with a flexible structure, Li6PS5Cl (LPSCl) powder of the sulfur-silver-germanium ore type, and lithium perchlorate salt (LiClO4) were prepared into sulfide gel composite electrolyte films (GCEs) via a thermosetting process. The experimental results showed that the gel composite electrolyte with 1% LPSCl in the PVdF-HFP matrix exhibited an ionic conductivity as high as 1.27 × 10-3 S·cm-1 at 25 °C and a lithium ion transference number of 0.63. The assembled LiFePO4||GCEs||Li batteries have excellent rate (130 mAh·g-1 at 1 C and 54 mAh·g-1 at 5 C) and cycling (capacity retention was 93% after 100 cycles at 0.1 C and 80% after 150 cycles at 0.2 C) performance. This work provides new methods and strategies for the design and fabrication of solid-state batteries with high ionic conductivity and high specific energy.

RESUMO

The cytokinin 6-benzyladenine (6-BA) is widely used to regulate the growth of horticultural crops. However, it is not clear how postharvest treatment with 6-BA at various concentrations affects the quality of Chinese flowering cabbage. In this study, harvested Chinese flowering cabbage was foliar sprayed with 6-BA solution at concentrations of 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 mg·L-1. All 6-BA treatments protected the quality of Chinese flowering cabbage during storage, and the treatment with 20 and 40 mg·L-1 6-BA showed the most obvious effect. Treatment with 6-BA reduced leaf yellowing degree and weight loss rate; maintained high chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b contents; suppressed the declines in ascorbic acid and soluble protein; enhanced antioxidant capacity; and reduced oxidative damage in cabbage leaves. Furthermore, 6-BA treatment upregulated the expression of antioxidant genes and the activities of SOD, POD, and CAT, while inhibiting the expression of senescence-related gene (BrSAG12) and chlorophyll catabolic genes (BrPAO, BrPPH, BrSGR1, BrNYC1, BrRCCR). These results suggest that postharvest 6-BA treatment enhances antioxidant capacity, delays leaf senescence, and inhibits chlorophyll degradation, thereby maintaining the quality of Chinese flowering cabbage during storage. The findings of this study provide a candidate method for preserving Chinese flowering cabbage after harvest.

RESUMO

Lithium-ion solid-state batteries with spinel Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) electrodes have significant advantages, such as stability, long life, and good multiplication performance. In this work, the LTO electrode was obtained by the atmospheric plasma spraying method, and a composite solid electrolyte was prepared by in situ ultraviolet (UV) curing on the LTO electrode. The composite solid electrolyte was designed using a soft-hard combination strategy, and the electrolyte was prepared into a composite of a poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) flexible structure and high-conductivity Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LATP) hard particles. The composite electrolyte exhibited a good ionic conductivity up to 0.35 mS cm-1 at 30 °C and an electrochemical window above 4.0 V. In situ and ex situ electrolytes were assembled into LTO//electrolyte//Li solid-state batteries to investigate their impact on the electrochemical performance of the batteries. As a result, the assembled Li4Ti5O12//in situ electrolytes//Li batteries exhibited excellent rate of performance, and their capacity retention rate was 90% at 0.2 mA/cm2 after 300 cycles. This work provides a new method for the fabrication of novel advanced solid-state electrolytes and electrodes for applications in solid-state batteries.

RESUMO

Background: Cancer therapy-related cardiotoxicity has recently become an area of intense research. As the prognostic role of the right ventricle (RV) in a variety of cardiovascular diseases has been confirmed, and several studies have paid increased attention to RV function in cancer patients who have underwent chemotherapy, we provide a meta-analysis to objectively evaluate the mechanical properties of the right ventricular myocardium by echocardiography in this population. Methods: We systematically searched Embase, PubMed, and Cochrane databases were applied to search for studies (published before August 11, 2021) comparing RV contraction measured by echocardiography at baseline to follow-up in cancer patients who underwent chemotherapy or radiotherapy. The mechanical properties of the right ventricular myocardium were pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP), tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), systolic velocity of tricuspid annulus (S'), right ventricular free wall longitudinal strain (RVFWLS), right ventricular global longitudinal strain (RVGLS), and right ventricular fractional area change (RVFAC). We analyzed pooled data using a random-effects model and assessed risk of bias in the included studies using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Results: Twenty-one trials were enrolled (N=1,355 participants). Cancer patients who underwent chemotherapy but not radiotherapy showed an increase in PASP [standardized mean difference (SMD) =0.161, 95% CI: 0.007 to 0.316) compared with the condition at baseline, as well as reductions in TAPSE (SMD =-0.543, 95% CI: -0.698 to -0.389), S' (SMD =-0.507, 95% CI: -0.748 to -0.266), RVFWLS (SMD =0.833, 95% CI: 0.549 to 1.118) and RVGLS (SMD =1.017, 95% CI: 0.751 to 1.283). There was no significant difference in RVFAC (SMD =-0.097, 95% CI: -0.213 to 0.018). Furthermore, these indicators pointed to a deterioration of right ventricular contraction function in cancer patients who underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The risk of bias of the included studies evaluated by the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was medium to high. Discussion: Right ventricular contraction function would deteriorate in cancer patients who underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy, especially with the prolongation of chemotherapy duration and accumulation of chemotherapeutic drugs. Further studies are needed to establish the definition of right ventricular systolic dysfunction in clinical practice.

RESUMO

The residues of bisphenol A (BPA) in milk packaging may transfer to milk, adversely affecting the human endocrine system. Consequently, to analyse or monitor BPA, it is imperative to develop rapid and effective approaches to BPA extraction from milk and milk packing as BPA is usually present in trace levels. Herein, we developed a rapid, simple, and low-cost dispersive-membrane-solid-phase-extraction (DME) for BPA with MIL-101(Cr) mixed-matrix-membrane (MMM). The MMM had large surface area (1322.09 m2/g) and pore volume (0.65 cm3/g), possessed great extraction efficiency of BPA, and kept more than 90% extraction efficiency after 20 times of reuse. Using the developed MIL-101(Cr)-MMM-based DME coupled with HPLC-fluorescence detector, we received an adequate linearity in the range of 0.1 âˆ¼ 50 µg/L BPA and a limit of detection as low as 16 ng/L under optimized conditions. The recoveries of BPA in milk and milk bottles were from 74.2% to 110.6%, with RSDs less than 9.4%.

RESUMO

Consistent exposure to 17ß-estradiol through drinking water and food can cause health problems. Although many simple and sensitive fluorescence sensors of 17ß-estradiol have been reported, most of them are based on fluorescence quenching test mode working in visible light range, which are inferior in anti-interference ability and quantitative range. Here, we developed a near-infrared (NIR) phosphorescence aptasensor for the detection of 17ß-estradiol that has no background fluorescence. The aptasensor was based on Foster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between aptamer conjugated NIR persistent luminescence nanoparticles (PLNPs-Apt) and MoS2 nanosheets. The 17ß-estradiol was quantified by the recovery of PLNPs' phosphorescence. This assay can detect 17ß-estradiol in 0.5 mL samples with the LOD of 0.29 ng mL-1 and in concentrations of more than three orders of magnitude (from 0.5 ng mL-1 to 1.2 µg mL-1). This aptasensor exhibited selectivity for 17ß-estradiol and was applicable in complex milk samples.

RESUMO

The continuous intake of 17ß-estradiol (E2) residue from animal-derived food may pose a threat to the health of consumers, so the rapid screen and detection of E2 is very necessary. Although visual immunochromatographic strip (ICS) has played a great role in food safety control such as the screen of many food contaminants, it cannot meet the requirements for E2 detection due to the insufficient sensitivity of traditional visual ICS and the low concentration range of estrogen in food. Here, we developed a dual-mode ICS strategy to achieve rapid and highly sensitive detection of E2. Based on the visual detection mode of a competitive ICS, the afterglow detection mode working in fluorescence resonance energy transfer mechanism was introduced by using the afterglow particles (APs) as energy donor and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as energy acceptor. In this method, large APs of micron size with superior afterglow were applied as the test zone-fixed fluorescence signal source, thus the contradiction between migration and afterglow characteristics was skillfully resolved. In addition, a 6 W UV lamp was used as the light source to excite APs, and a smartphone was used to capture an image of 0.5 s after the UV light was turned off to effectively remove the autofluorescence from the strips and improve the signal-to-noise ratio. The limit of detection of this afterglow mode was 0.5 ng/mL, twenty times more sensitive than that of visual mode (10 ng/mL). The strategy has been successfully applied to the detection of estradiol in milk and verified by HPLC-FLD.

RESUMO

A series of broad emission band near infrared materials Mg3Y2Ge3O12:Cr3+ (650-1200 nm) was prepared based on cation inversion. For trivalent chromium ions (Cr3+), garnet structural components can provide conditions for the occurrence of cation inversion. With an increase in Cr3+ concentration, the Mg2+ and Ge4+ cations are inverted to ensure valence equilibrium, which was explained by recording the low temperature spectrum of the structure and carrying out structural refinement. As a result, this structure provides a new luminescent center [GeO6] for Cr3+, leading to a secondary enhancement in emission intensity. The wavelength of the main peak was found to move from 771 to 811 nm, and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) was broadened from 180 to 226 nm. The lattice occupation, luminescence mechanism and the reasons behind the red-shift and broadening of the spectra were studied in detail. By analyzing the crystallinity and particle size distributions of the samples, as well as the Cr3+ ion energy level shift, it was determined that cation inversion is an effective method that can be used to tune the luminescence performance. Meanwhile, a super broad near infrared light emitting diode (LED) with a FWHM of 260 nm was obtained by combining a GaN chip with MYG:0.40Cr3+.

RESUMO

Superspreaders are critical infectious resources in multiple infectious diseases. They can be asymptomatic or present mild symptoms but can transmit pathogens to susceptible populations, leading to severe symptoms, and even death. Early identification of this population is extremely important to inhibit the spread of infectious diseases. Right now, the whole global world is suffering from a devastating infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). In this article, a superspreader cluster event in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was identified by tracking contacting histories of infected patients. This cluster was found to be originated from an asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 carrier, which resulted in 13 secondary cases getting infected. All the secondary patients presented with non-typical symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever, dry cough, and myalgia, one of which died of respiratory failure at the end. From this cluster, we learn that people with older ages, low immunity, multiple underlying diseases, especially pulmonary diseases, can contribute to a poor prognosis. Thus, asymptomatic superspreaders of COVID-19 can be extremely dangerous and must be handled time-efficiently.

RESUMO

UNBS5162, a novel naphthalimide, is generated by UNBS3157 hydrolysis in physiological saline. In the present study, the effects of UNBS5162 on M14 human melanoma cells were evaluated by Cell Counting Kit8 and transwell assays, as well as western blotting. The underlying mechanism of apoptosis induced by UNBS5162 was investigated. The results demonstrated that proliferation of UNBS5162treated M14 melanoma cells was markedly inhibited in a timedependent manner. The flow cytometry results indicated a markedly increased apoptosis rate in the experimental group compared with in the control group (23.8±0.4 vs. 7.62±0.5%). Microscopy analysis revealed that the invasive and migratory abilities of UNBS5162treated M14 cells were markedly suppressed. Furthermore, UNBS5162 treatment led to decreased expression of the antiapoptotic protein Bcell lymphoma 2, but increased expression of the proapoptotic proteins Bcl2associated X protein and caspase3. In addition, the expression of several key proteins involved in the phosphatidylinositol4,5bisphosphate 3kinase/protein kinase B/mammalian target of rapamycin (PI3K/Akt/mTOR) signaling pathway was altered in M14 cells treated with UNBS5162. Based on these results, it may be hypothesized that UNBS5162 suppresses the proliferation of M14 cells by inducing apoptosis via inhibition of key proteins in the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tumor hypoxia plays a fundamental role in resistance to therapy and disease progression. A number of studies have assessed the prognostic role of HIFs expression in head and neck cancer (HNC), but no consistent outcomes are reported. METHODOLOGY: A systematical search was performed to search relevant literatures in PubMed, Web of Science and ISI Web of Knowledge databases. The patients' clinical characteristics and survival outcome were extracted. The correlation between HIFs expression and prognosis was analyzed. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A total of 28 studies assessed the association between HIFs and HNC survival, the result showed that overexpressed HIFs was significantly associated with increase of mortality risk (HR = 2.12; 95% CI: 1.52-2.94; I(2) 74%). Subgroup analysis on different HIF isoforms with OS indicated that both HIF-1α and HIF-2α were associated with worse prognosis. The pooled HRs were 1.72(95% CI 1.34-2.20; I(2) 70.7%) and 1.79(95% CI: 1.42-2.27, I(2) 0%). Further subgroup analysis was performed by different geographical locations, disease subtype, stage, types of variate analysis and cut-off value. The results revealed that overexpressed HIF-1α was significantly associated with poor prognosis in Asian patients (HR = 2.34; 95% CI: 1.76-3.1; I(2) 48.9%), but not in European patients (HR = 1.13; 95% CI: 0.77-1.66; I(2) 78.3%). Furthermore, HIF-1α overexpression was significantly associated with worse OS in oral carcinoma (HR = 2.1; 95% CI: 1.11-3.97; I(2) 81.7%), nasopharyngeal carcinoma (HR = 2.07; 95% CI:1.23-3.49; I(2) 22.5%) and oropharynx carcinoma (HR = 1.76; 95% CI:1.05-2.97; I(2) 61%), but not in laryngeal carcinoma (HR = 1.38; 95% CI: 0.87-2.19; I(2) 62.5%). We also found that the prognostic value of HIF-1α overexpression existed only when using staining and percentage as positive definition (HR = 1.82; 95% CI 1.42-2.33; I(2) 9.9%). CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that overexpressed HIFs were significantly associated with increase of mortality risk. Subgroup analysis revealed that overexpressed HIF-1α was significantly associated with worse prognosis of HNC in Asian countries. Additionally, HIF-1α had different prognostic value in different HNC disease subtypes.
