BACKGROUND: Bleeding rates on dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) within 1 month after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) remain high in clinical practice, particularly in patients with acute coronary syndrome or high bleeding risk. Aspirin-free strategy might result in lower bleeding early after PCI without increasing cardiovascular events, but its efficacy and safety have not yet been proven in randomized trials. METHODS: We randomly assigned 6002 patients with acute coronary syndrome or high bleeding risk just before PCI either to prasugrel (3.75 mg/day) monotherapy or to DAPT with aspirin (81-100 mg/day) and prasugrel (3.75 mg/day) after loading of 20 mg of prasugrel in both groups. The coprimary end points were major bleeding (Bleeding Academic Research Consortium 3 or 5) for superiority and cardiovascular events (a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, definite stent thrombosis, or ischemic stroke) for noninferiority with a relative 50% margin. RESULTS: The full analysis set population consisted of 5966 patients (no-aspirin group, 2984 patients; DAPT group, 2982 patients; age, 71.6±11.7 years; men, 76.6%; acute coronary syndrome, 75.0%). Within 7 days before randomization, aspirin alone, aspirin with P2Y12 inhibitor, oral anticoagulants, and intravenous heparin infusion were given in 21.3%, 6.4%, 8.9%, and 24.5%, respectively. Adherence to the protocol-specified antiplatelet therapy was 88% in both groups at 1 month. At 1 month, the no-aspirin group was not superior to the DAPT group for the coprimary bleeding end point (4.47% and 4.71%; hazard ratio, 0.95 [95% CI, 0.75-1.20]; Psuperiority=0.66). The no-aspirin group was noninferior to the DAPT group for the coprimary cardiovascular end point (4.12% and 3.69%; hazard ratio, 1.12 [95% CI, 0.87-1.45]; Pnoninferiority=0.01). There was no difference in net adverse clinical outcomes and each component of coprimary cardiovascular end point. There was an excess of any unplanned coronary revascularization (1.05% and 0.57%; hazard ratio, 1.83 [95%CI, 1.01-3.30]) and subacute definite or probable stent thrombosis (0.58% and 0.17%; hazard ratio, 3.40 [95% CI, 1.26-9.23]) in the no-aspirin group compared with the DAPT group. CONCLUSIONS: The aspirin-free strategy using low-dose prasugrel compared with the DAPT strategy failed to attest superiority for major bleeding within 1 month after PCI but was noninferior for cardiovascular events within 1 month after PCI. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There was no previous trial comparing aspirin monotherapy with a P2Y12 inhibitor monotherapy following short dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stents (DES). METHODS: In the STOPDAPT-3, patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) or high bleeding risk (HBR) were randomly assigned to either 1-month DAPT with aspirin and prasugrel followed by aspirin monotherapy (aspirin group) or 1-month prasugrel monotherapy followed by clopidogrel monotherapy (clopidogrel group). This secondary analysis compared aspirin monotherapy with clopidogrel monotherapy by the 30-day landmark analysis. The co-primary endpoints were the cardiovascular endpoint defined as a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, definite stent thrombosis, or ischaemic stroke, and the bleeding endpoint defined as Bleeding Academic Research Consortium 3 or 5. RESULTS: Of 6002 assigned patients, 5833 patients (aspirin group: N = 2920 and clopidogrel group: N = 2913) were included in the 30-day landmark analysis. Median age was 73 (interquartile range 64-80) years, women 23.4%, ACS 74.6%, and HBR 54.1%. The assigned monotherapy was continued at 1 year in 87.5% and 87.2% in the aspirin and clopidogrel groups, respectively. The incidence rates beyond 30 days and up to 1 year were similar between the aspirin and clopidogrel groups for both cardiovascular endpoint (4.5 and 4.5 per 100 person-year, hazard ratio [HR] 1.00 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.77-1.30], P = .97), and bleeding endpoint (2.0 and 1.9, HR 1.02 [95% CI 0.69-1.52], P = .92). CONCLUSIONS: Aspirin monotherapy compared to clopidogrel monotherapy was associated with similar cardiovascular and bleeding outcomes beyond 1 month and up to 1 year after PCI with DES.

Despite more than 50 years of investigation, it is still unclear how the underlying structure of relaxor ferroelectrics gives rise to their defining properties, such as ultrahigh piezoelectric coefficients, high permittivity over a broad temperature range, diffuse phase transitions, strong frequency dependence in dielectric response, and phonon anomalies. The model of polar nanoregions inside a non-polar matrix has been widely used to describe the structure of relaxor ferroelectrics. However, the lack of precise knowledge about the shapes, growth and dipole patterns of polar nanoregions has led to the characterization of relaxors as "hopeless messes", and no predictive model for relaxor behaviour is currently available. Here we use molecular dynamics simulations of the prototypical Pb(Mg1/3,Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 relaxor material to examine its structure and the spatial and temporal polarization correlations. Our simulations show that the unusual properties of relaxors stem from the presence of a multi-domain state with extremely small domain sizes (2-10 nanometres), and no non-polar matrix, owing to the local dynamics. We find that polar structures in the multi-domain state in relaxors are analogous to those of the slush state of water. The multi-domain structure of relaxors that is revealed by our molecular dynamics simulations is consistent with recent experimental diffuse scattering results and indicates that relaxors have a high density of low-angle domain walls. This insight explains the recently discovered classes of relaxors that cannot be described by the polar nanoregion model, and provides guidance for the design and synthesis of new relaxor materials.

We previously demonstrated that dietary supplementation with Dunaliella tertiolecta (DT) increases uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) expression in brown adipose tissue (BAT) and improves diet-induced obesity (DIO) in C57BL/6 J mice at thermoneutrality (30 °C). Here, we investigated whether DT improves DIO in a thermoneutral UCP1-deficient (KO) animal. KO mice were fed a high-fat diet supplemented with DT for 12 weeks. Compared to control group without DT, body weight was significantly reduced in DT group with no difference in food intake. Dunaliella tertiolecta-supplemented mice exhibited lower adiposity and well-maintained multilocular morphology in BAT, in which a significant increase in gene expression of PR domain containing 16 was detected in DT group compared to control group. Moreover, increase in UCP2 level and/or decrease in ribosomal protein S6 phosphorylation were detected in adipose tissues of DT group relative to control group. These results suggest that DT supplementation improves DIO by stimulating UCP1-independent energy dissipation at thermoneutrality.

RESUMO

A new antibacterial 3-monoacyl-sn-glycerol, nostochopcerol (1), was isolated from a cultured algal mass of the edible cyanobacterium Nostochopsis lobatus MAC0804NAN. The structure of compound 1 was established by the analysis of NMR and MS data while its chirality was established by comparison of optical rotation values with synthetically prepared authentics. Compound 1 inhibited the growth of Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus at MIC of 50 µg/mL and 100 µg/mL, respectively.

Through first-principles real-time density-matrix (FPDM) dynamics simulations, we investigated spin relaxation due to electron-phonon and electron-impurity scatterings with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in two-dimensional Dirac materials silicene and germanene at finite temperatures. We discussed the applicability of conventional descriptions of spin relaxation mechanisms by Elliott-Yafet (EY) and D'yakonov-Perel' (DP) compared to the FPDM method, which is determined by a complex interplay of intrinsic SOC, external fields, and scattering strength. For example, the electric field dependence of the spin lifetime by FPDM is close to the DP mechanism for silicene at room temperature but similar to the EY mechanism for germanene. Because of its stronger SOC strength and buckled structure in contrast to graphene, germanene has a giant spin lifetime anisotropy and spin-valley locking effect under nonzero Ez and low temperatures. More importantly, germanene has a long spin lifetime (∼100 ns at 50 K) and an ultrahigh carrier mobility, making it advantageous for spin-valleytronic applications.

BACKGROUND: In Japan, the long-term care insurance (LTCI) system has an important role in helping elderly people, but there have been no clinical studies that have examined the relationship between the LTCI and prognosis for patients with acute heart failure (HF).Methods and Results:This registry was a prospective multicenter cohort, 1,253 patients were enrolled and 965 patients with acute HF aged ≥65 years were comprised the study group. The composite endpoint included all-cause death and hospitalization for HF after discharge. We divided the patients into 4 groups: (i) patients without LTCI, (ii) patients requiring support level 1 or 2, (iii) patients with care level 1 or 2, and (iv) patients with care levels 3-5. The Kaplan-Meier analysis identified a lower rate of the composite endpoint in group (i) than in the other groups. After adjusting for potentially confounding effects using a Cox proportional regression model, the hazard ratio (HR) of the composite endpoint increased significantly in groups (iii) and (iv) (adjusted HR, 1.62; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.22-1.98 and adjusted HR, 1.62; 95% CI, 1.23-2.14, respectively) when compared with group (i). However, there was no significant difference between groups (i) and (ii). CONCLUSIONS: The level of LTCI was associated with a higher risk of the composite endpoint after discharge in acute HF patients.

BACKGROUND: Social background is important in preventing admission/readmission of heart failure (HF) patients. However, few clinical studies have been conducted to assess the social background of these patients, especially elderly patients.Methods and Results:The Kitakawachi Clinical Background and Outcome of Heart Failure (KICKOFF) Registry is a prospective multicenter community-based cohort of HF patients, established in April 2015. We compared the clinical characteristics and social background of the super-elderly group (≥85 years old) and the non-super-elderly group (<85 years old). This study included 647 patients; 11.8% of the super-elderly patients were living alone, 15.6% were living with only a partner, and of these, only 66.7% had the support of other family members. The super-elderly group had less control over their diet and drug therapies than the non-super-elderly group. Most patients in the super-elderly group were registered for long-term care insurance (77.4%); 73.5% of the super-elderly patients could walk independently before admission, but only 55.5% could walk independently at discharge, whereas 94% of the non-super-elderly patients could walk independently before admission and 89.4% could walk independently at discharge. CONCLUSIONS: The KICKOFF Registry provides unique detailed social background information of Japanese patients with HF. Super-elderly patients are at serious risk of social frailty; they need the support of other people and their ability to perform activities of daily living decline when hospitalized.

AIMS: Safety of aspirin-free strategy immediately after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for cardiovascular events in patients with diabetes was unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted the prespecified subgroup analysis on diabetes in the STOPDAPT-3 trial, which randomly compared prasugrel (3.75 mg/day) monotherapy (2984 patients) to dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with prasugrel and aspirin (2982 patients) in patients with acute coronary syndrome or high bleeding risk. The co-primary endpoints were major bleeding events (Bleeding Academic Research Consortium 3 or 5) and cardiovascular events (a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, definite stent thrombosis, or stroke) at 1 month. Of 5966 study patients, there were 2715 patients (45.5%) with diabetes. Patients with diabetes more often had chronic coronary syndrome, heart failure or cardiogenic shock, and comorbidities than those without. Patients with diabetes compared to those without had higher incidences of major bleeding and cardiovascular events. Regardless of diabetes, the effect of no-aspirin relative to DAPT was not different for the co-primary bleeding (diabetes: 5.05% versus 5.47%; HR, 0.92; 95%CI, 0.66-1.28 and non-diabetes: 3.99% versus 4.07%; HR, 0.98; 95%CI, 0.69-1.38; P for interaction = 0.81) and cardiovascular (diabetes: 5.54% versus 5.15%; HR, 1.08; 95%CI, 0.78-1.49 and non-diabetes: 2.95% versus 2.47%; HR, 1.20; 95%CI, 0.79-1.82; P for interaction = 0.70) endpoints. The incidences of subacute definite or probable stent thrombosis and any coronary revascularization were higher in the no-aspirin group than in the DAPT group regardless of diabetes. CONCLUSIONS: The effects of an aspirin-free prasugrel monotherapy (3.75 mg/day) relative to DAPT for major bleeding and cardiovascular events were not different regardless of diabetes. BACKGROUND: There was no study evaluating the effects of an aspirin-free strategy in patients undergoing complex percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). OBJECTIVES: The authors aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of an aspirin-free strategy in patients undergoing complex PCI. METHODS: We conducted the prespecified subgroup analysis based on complex PCI in the STOPDAPT-3 (ShorT and OPtimal duration of Dual AntiPlatelet Therapy after everolimus-eluting cobalt-chromium stent-3), which randomly compared low-dose prasugrel (3.75 mg/d) monotherapy to dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with low-dose prasugrel and aspirin in patients with acute coronary syndrome or high bleeding risk. Complex PCI was defined as any of the following 6 criteria: 3 vessels treated, ≥3 stents implanted, ≥3 lesions treated, bifurcation with 2 stents implanted, total stent length >60 mm, or a target of chronic total occlusion. The coprimary endpoints were major bleeding events (Bleeding Academic Research Consortium 3 or 5) and cardiovascular events (a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, definite stent thrombosis, or ischemic stroke) at 1 month. RESULTS: Of the 5,966 study patients, there were 1,230 patients (20.6%) with complex PCI. Regardless of complex PCI, the effects of no aspirin relative to DAPT were not significant for the coprimary bleeding (complex PCI: 5.30% vs 3.70%; HR: 1.44; 95% CI: 0.84-2.47; P = 0.18 and noncomplex PCI: 4.26% vs 4.97%; HR: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.65-1.11; P = 0.24; P for interaction = 0.08) and cardiovascular (complex PCI: 5.78% vs 5.93%; HR: 0.98; 95% CI: 0.62-1.55; P = 0.92 and noncomplex PCI: 3.70% vs 3.10%; HR: 1.20; 95% CI: 0.88-1.63; P = 0.25; P for interaction = 0.48) endpoints without significant interactions. CONCLUSIONS: The effects of the aspirin-free strategy relative to standard DAPT for the cardiovascular and major bleeding events were not different regardless of complex PCI. BACKGROUND: The effects of aspirin-free strategy on bleeding and cardiovascular events in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention with oral anticoagulation (OAC) have not been fully elucidated. METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted the prespecified subgroup analysis based on the use of OAC, including vitamin K antagonist and direct oral anticoagulants, within 7 days before percutaneous coronary intervention in the STOPDAPT-3 (Short and Optimal Duration of Dual Antiplatelet Therapy-3) trial, which randomly compared prasugrel monotherapy (2984 patients) to dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with prasugrel and aspirin (2982 patients) in patients with acute coronary syndrome or high bleeding risk. The coprimary end points were major bleeding events (Bleeding Academic Research Consortium types 3 or 5) and cardiovascular events (a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, definite stent thrombosis, or ischemic stroke) at 1 month. Among 5966 study patients, there were 530 patients (8.9%) with OAC (no aspirin: N=248, and DAPT: N=282) and 5436 patients (91.1%) without OAC (no aspirin: N=2736, and DAPT: N=2700). Regardless of the use of OAC, the effects of no aspirin compared with DAPT were not significant for the bleeding end point (OAC: 4.45% and 4.27%, hazard ratio [HR], 1.04 [95% CI, 0.46-2.35]; no-OAC: 4.47% and 4.75%, HR, 0.94 [95% CI, 0.73-1.20]; P for interaction=0.82), and for the cardiovascular end point (OAC: 4.84% and 3.20%, HR, 1.53 [95% CI, 0.64-3.62]; no-OAC: 4.06% and 3.74%, HR, 1.09 [95% CI 0.83-1.42]; P for interaction =0.46). CONCLUSIONS: The no-aspirin strategy compared with the DAPT strategy failed to reduce major bleeding events irrespective of the use of OAC. There was a numerical excess risk of the no-aspirin strategy relative to the DAPT strategy for cardiovascular events in patients with OAC.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: High bleeding risk (HBR) and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) subtypes are critical in determining bleeding and cardiovascular event risk after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS AND RESULTS: In 4476 ACS patients enrolled in the STOPDAPT-3, where the no-aspirin and dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) strategies after PCI were randomly compared, the pre-specified subgroup analyses were conducted based on HBR/non-HBR and ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)/non-ST-segment elevation ACS (NSTE-ACS). The co-primary bleeding endpoint was Bleeding Academic Research Consortium (BARC) type 3 or 5, and the co-primary cardiovascular endpoint was a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, definite stent thrombosis, or ischaemic stroke at 1 month. Irrespective of the subgroups, the effect of no-aspirin compared with DAPT was not significant for the bleeding endpoint (HBR [N = 1803]: 7.27 and 7.91%, hazard ratio (HR) 0.91, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.65-1.28; non-HBR [N = 2673]: 3.40 and 3.65%, HR 0.93, 95% CI 0.62-1.39; Pinteraction = 0.94; STEMI [N = 2553]: 6.58 and 6.56%, HR 1.00, 95% CI 0.74-1.35; NSTE-ACS [N = 1923]: 2.94 and 3.64%, HR 0.80, 95% CI 0.49-1.32; Pinteraction = 0.45), and for the cardiovascular endpoint (HBR: 7.87 and 5.75%, HR 1.39, 95% CI 0.97-1.99; non-HBR: 2.56 and 2.67%, HR 0.96, 95% CI 0.60-1.53; Pinteraction = 0.22; STEMI: 6.07 and 5.46%, HR 1.11, 95% CI 0.81-1.54; NSTE-ACS: 3.03 and 1.71%, HR 1.78, 95% CI 0.97-3.27; Pinteraction = 0.18). CONCLUSION: In patients with ACS undergoing PCI, the no-aspirin strategy compared with the DAPT strategy failed to reduce major bleeding events irrespective of HBR and ACS subtypes. The numerical excess risk of the no-aspirin strategy relative to the DAPT strategy for cardiovascular events was observed in patients with HBR and in patients with NSTE-ACS.

The current guidelines for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) discourage the use of anticoagulation after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) without specific indications, although the recommendation is not well supported by evidence. In this post hoc analysis of the ShorT and OPtimal Duration of Dual AntiPlatelet Therapy-3 (STOPDAPT-3) trial, 30-day outcomes were compared between the 2 groups with and without post-PCI heparin administration among patients with ACS who did not receive mechanical support devices. The co-primary end points were the bleeding end point, defined as the Bleeding Academic Research Consortium type 3 or 5 bleeding, and the cardiovascular end point, defined as a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, definite stent thrombosis, or ischemic stroke. Among 4,088 patients with ACS, 2,339 patients (57.2%) received post-PCI heparin. The proportion of patients receiving post-PCI heparin was higher among those with ST-elevation myocardial infarction compared with others (72.3% and 38.8%, p <0.001), and among patients with intraprocedural adverse angiographic findings compared with those without (67.6% and 47.5%, p <0.001). Post-PCI heparin compared with no post-PCI heparin was associated with a significantly increased risk of the bleeding end point (4.75% and 2.52%, adjusted hazard ratio 1.69, 95% confidence interval 1.15 to 2.46, p = 0.007) and a numerically increased risk of the cardiovascular end point (3.16% and 1.72%, adjusted hazard ratio 1.56, 95% confidence interval 0.98 to 2.46, p = 0.06). Higher hourly dose or total doses of heparin were also associated with higher incidence of both bleeding and cardiovascular events within 30 days. In conclusion, post-PCI anticoagulation with unfractionated heparin was frequently implemented in patients with ACS. Post-PCI heparin use was associated with harm in terms of increased bleeding without the benefit of reducing cardiovascular events. Relaxor ferroelectrics have been a focus of intense attention due to their anomalous properties, and understanding the structure and dynamics of relaxors has been one of the long-standing challenges in solid-state physics. We investigate the local structure and dynamics in 75%PbMg(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3)-25%PbTiO(3) using molecular dynamics simulations and the dynamic pair distribution function technique. We show that relaxor transitions can be described by local order parameters. The relaxor phase is characterized by the presence of highly anisotropic correlations between the local cation displacements that resemble the hydrogen bond network in water. This contradicts the current model of polar nanoregion inside a nonpolar matrix. We therefore suggest a new model of a homogeneous random network of anisotropically coupled dipoles.

The success of the lead halide perovskites in diverse optoelectronics has motivated considerable interest in their fundamental photocarrier dynamics. Here we report the discovery of photocarrier-induced persistent structural polarization and local ferroelectricity in lead halide perovskites. Photoconductance studies of thin-film single-crystal CsPbBr3 at 10 K reveal long-lasting persistent photoconductance with an ultralong photocarrier lifetime beyond 106 s. X-ray diffraction studies reveal that photocarrier-induced structural polarization is present up to a critical freezing temperature. Photocapacitance studies at cryogenic temperatures further demonstrate a systematic local phase transition from linear dielectric to paraelectric and relaxor ferroelectric under increasing illumination. Our theoretical investigations highlight the critical role of photocarrier-phonon coupling and large polaron formation in driving the local relaxor ferroelectric phase transition. Our findings show that this photocarrier-induced persistent structural polarization enables the formation of ferroelectric nanodomains at low temperature, which suppress carrier recombination and offer the possibility of exploring intriguing carrier-phonon interplay and the rich polaron photophysics.

OBJECTIVES: Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is often difficult to diagnose. We evaluated the diagnostic yields of underlying diseases of PLE among esophagogastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy, fluoroscopic conventional enteroclysis (FCE), videocapsule endoscopy (VCE), and double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) and prognosis after treatment. METHODS: Between June 2003 and August 2010, 25 consecutive patients with PLE confirmed by fecal α1-antitrypsin clearance (n=18) and technetium 99m human serum albumin scintigraphy (n=19) were enrolled, investigated, and treated. RESULTS: Of 25 patients, 4 (16%) with intestinal lymphangiectasia secondary to macroglobulinemia (n=1), amyloidosis (n=2), and strongyloidiasis (n=1) were diagnosed at preceding esophagogastroduodenoscopy or colonoscopy, and 7 (32%) with primary intestinal lymphangiectasia and chronic nonspecific multiple ulcers unrelated to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs of the small intestine were newly diagnosed at FCE or VCE. Other 11 (44%) patients with primary intestinal lymphangiectasia, small-bowel tumors, amyloidosis, chronic nonspecific multiple ulcers unrelated to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs of the small intestine, Crohn's disease, and small-bowel ulcers due to polyarteritis nodosa were diagnosed only at DBE with biopsy. Three patients with primary intestinal lymphangiectasia, cirrhosis after living donor liver transplantation, and congestive heart failure were not diagnosed at any small-bowel examination. The overall diagnostic yield of FCE, VCE, and DBE was 62% (8/13), 83% (14/17), and 88% (22/25), respectively. Eight patients (32%) died of underlying disorders regardless of medical treatment over the follow-up period. CONCLUSIONS: DBE with pathologic findings of biopsy specimens was useful for the differential diagnosis of PLE. Noninvasive VCE might be preferable and useful for screening and follow up of PLE without stricture. Prognosis of a subgroup of PLE was poor regardless of treatment.

RAPID Access Real-Time (RT) has the ability to provide an endoscopist with the presence of bleeding and its location for cases with on-going mid GI bleeding. However, to date, the clinical benefits of this device remain unknown as studies on it have not yet been published. We present a case of recurrent GI bleeding where video capsule endoscopy (VCE) with real time viewing helped them decide on the route of double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE). Since the bleeding image of RT had not been obtained over 150 minutes after passing the pylorus, the patient underwent retrograde DBE. In the middle of the ileum, active bleeding from Dieulafoy's lesion was found and we treated it successfully. It was suggested the effectiveness of VCE in reference to the determination of RT for on-going mid GI bleeding.

The extract of terrestrial alga Nostoc commune Vauch. has high antioxidative activity. Our study on N. commune Vauch. resulted in the isolation of two ß-ionone derivatives, nostocionone and 3-oxo-ß-ionone, together with four indole alkaloids, scytonemin, reduced scytonemin, N-(p-coumaroyl)tryptamine, and N-acetyltryptamine. The structures of the isolated compounds were determined on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR and MS analyses. Among these isolates, nostocionone and reduced scytonemin demonstrated strong antioxidative activities which were assessed by using a ß-carotene oxidation assay.

High defect tolerance has been considered a primary reason for the long charge carrier lifetime and high photoluminescence quantum yield in bulk lead halide perovskites (LHPs). On the other hand, surface defects play a critical role in determining charge carrier dynamics and optical properties, especially for LHP nanocrystals and quantum dots. Understanding the nature of surface defects and developing strategy for their effective passivation are thus of strong interest. Focusing on a prototypical LHP, CsPbBr3, our work uses first-principles calculations to reveal that interstitial sites and antisites can have lower formation energies when they form at the surface while simultaneously creating deep trap states within the bandgap. Meanwhile, the formation of halide vacancies is energetically less favorable. On the basis of a new surface defect model, we demonstrate the explicit role of molecular ligands in passivating these defects, which eliminate trap states in favor of shallow states and enhance photoluminescence.
