The combination of chlorine-mediated electrochemical advanced oxidation (Cl-EAO) and ultraviolet (UV) radiation (UV-E/Cl) can efficiently remove ammonia from wastewater. However, the synergistic mechanisms between Cl-EAO and UV need to be explored in more detail. Thus, in this study, the ammonia oxidation performance of Cl-EAO and UV-E/Cl systems were compared, while the synergistic mechanisms were identified by the performance of UV/chlorine oxidation (UV-ClO) system and the results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, free radical inhibition assays, and determination of steady-state concentration of free radicals. It was found that, compared with the Cl-EAO system, UV increased the ammonia removal rate by 42.85% and reduced the active chlorine concentration (56.64%) and nitrate yield (53.61%). In the Cl-EAO, and UV-E/Cl systems, Cl• were detected, and the free radical inhibition assays and determination of steady-state concentration of free radicals suggested that UV increased the concentration of Cl• by 51.47%, resulting in Cl• becoming the major contributor to ammonia oxidation in the UV-E/Cl system. Besides, UV also increase the concentrations of HO• and Cl2•-, which further promoted the organic matter removal in the real domestic wastewater. This study also discussed the ammonia oxidation performance of the UV-E/Cl system in real domestic wastewater, even with the presence of significant levels of organic and inorganic anions in the wastewater, UV increased the ammonia oxidation by 21.95%. The results of this study thus clarify the mechanisms and potential applications of UV-E/Cl technology.

As a type of elementary organic compounds containing N-N single bond, hydrazone involved chemical conversions are extremely extensive, but they are mainly limited to N2-retention and N2-removal modes. We report herein an unprecedented protocol for the realization of division utilization of the N2-moiety of hydrazone by a radical facilitated N-N bond deconstruction strategy. This new conversion mode enables the successful combination of alkene carboamination and Hofmann-Löffler-Freytag reaction by the reaction of N-homoallyl mesitylenesulfonyl hydrazones with ethyl difluoroiodoacetate under photocatalytic redox neutral conditions. Mechanism studies reveal that the reaction undergoes a radical relay involving addition, crucial remote imino-N migration and H-atom transfer. Consequently, a series of structurally significant ϵ-N-sulphonamide-α,α-difluoro-γ-amino acid esters are efficiently produced via continuous C-C bond and dual C-N bonds forging.

The capillary waves induced by electrowetting-on-dielectric have great potential in terms of capillary propulsion and other applications. At present, these applications are limited by a lack of research on the effects of liquid viscosity, which is an important parameter in controlling this phenomenon. This paper examines the formation, propagation, and attenuation of electrowetting-on-dielectric-induced capillary waves (EWCWs) on a liquid-free surface with different levels of liquid viscosity. The formation and propagation of the capillary waves are visualized using a high-speed camera and a free-surface synthetic Schlieren method. A theoretical model is established to describe the wave amplitude and wave propagation of EWCWs. The results show that the liquid viscosity, as well as the surface tension, significantly affects the formation and propagation of EWCWs. Using the results presented in this paper, a new type of Stokes viscometer based on EWCWs is proposed, enabling accurate measurements of liquid viscosity over a wide range of viscosity and temperature conditions.

Aiming for treating decentralized domestic wastewater in rural China, this study evaluates the effects of ceramsite size and structure, and water recirculation parameters, upon the performance of recirculating biofilter (RBF). RBF shows stable capability of chemical oxygen demand (COD) remediation and ammonia nitrification. In addition, the microbial flora and structures of the various layers in the system are analyzed via high-throughput sequencing in order to study the microbial diversity. The results indicate that while the ceramic particle size has no significant influence on the COD remediation capacity, the ceramics with smaller particle sizes exhibit better ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) removal ability, with a first-order linear relationship between the influent ammonia nitrogen load and the effluent NH4+-N concentration in RBF (R2 > 0.64). An increased hydraulic load and intermittent operation are shown to deteriorate the water quality with respect to NH4+-N, while an increased recirculation ratio increases the removal rate of NH4+-N from the effluent. Further, the water distribution time has a stronger effect upon the NH4+-N concentration in the effluent than does the recirculation ratio. Moreover, the microbial structure of the multi-layer recirculating trickle biofilter varies significantly during the process. The results indicate that a high recirculation ratio, long water distribution time, and multi-layer structure will be beneficial for improving the pollutant treatment capacity of RBF.

In wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), aeration is vital for microbial oxygen needs. To achieve carbon neutrality, optimizing aeration for energy and emissions reduction is imperative. Machine learning (ML) is used in wastewater treatment to reveal complex rules in large data sets has become a trend. In this vein, the present paper proposes an aeration optimization approach based on the extreme gradient boosting-bidirectional long short-term memory (XGB-Bi-LSTM) model via the online monitoring of oxygen transfer efficiency (OTE) and oxygen uptake rate (OUR), thus allowing WWTPs to conserve energy and reduce indirect carbon emissions. The approach uses gain algorithm of XGB to calculate the importance of features and identify important parameters, and then uses Bi-LSTM to predict the target with important parameters as features. Operational data from a WWTP in Suzhou, China, is employed to train and test the approach, the performance of which is compared with ML models suitable for regression prediction tasks (XGB, random forest, light gradient boosting machine, gradient boosting and LSTM). Experimental results show the approach requires only a small number of input parameters to achieve good performance and outperforms other machine-learning models. When OTE and dissolved oxygen (DO) are used as features to predict the alpha factor (αF; since diffusers were used, multiply by the pollution factor F), the R-squared (R2) is 0.9977, the root mean square error (RMSE) is 0.0043, the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) is 0.0069 and the median absolute error (MedAE) is 0.0032. When the predicted αF and the OUR are used as features to predict the air flow rate of an aeration unit, the R2 is 0.9901, the RMSE is 3.6150, the MAPE is 0.0209 and the MedAE is 1.5472. Using our optimized aeration approach, the energy consumption can be reduced by 23%.

Drug resistance in fungal pathogens has risen steadily over the past decades due to long-term azole therapy or triazole usage in agriculture. Modification of the drug target protein to prevent drug binding is a major recognized route to induce drug resistance. However, mechanisms for nondrug target-induced resistance remain only loosely defined. Here, we explore the molecular mechanisms of multidrug resistance resulted from an efficient adaptation strategy for survival in drug environments in the human pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus We show that mutants conferring multidrug resistance are linked with mitochondrial dysfunction induced by defects in heme A biosynthesis. Comparison of the gene expression profiles between the drug-resistant mutants and the parental wild-type strain shows that multidrug-resistant transporters, chitin synthases, and calcium-signaling-related genes are significantly up-regulated, while scavenging mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS)-related genes are significantly down-regulated. The up-regulated-expression genes share consensus calcium-dependent serine threonine phosphatase-dependent response elements (the binding sites of calcium-signaling transcription factor CrzA). Accordingly, drug-resistant mutants show enhanced cytosolic Ca2+ transients and persistent nuclear localization of CrzA. In comparison, calcium chelators significantly restore drug susceptibility and increase azole efficacy either in laboratory-derived or in clinic-isolated A. fumigatus strains. Thus, the mitochondrial dysfunction as a fitness cost can trigger calcium signaling and, therefore, globally up-regulate a series of embedding calcineurin-dependent-response-element genes, leading to antifungal resistance. These findings illuminate how fitness cost affects drug resistance and suggest that disruption of calcium signaling might be a promising therapeutic strategy to fight against nondrug target-induced drug resistance.

KEY MESSAGE: Two regions located at chromosome A05 and D04 were found to be significantly associated with 0-0.5 mm and 0.5-2 mm diameter roots, respectively, and two candidate genes related to root development were identified. Roots absorb water and nutrients, and play an important role in plant growth. However, there are few genetic developmental studies on cotton root structural traits. In this study, we used 200 upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) varieties to analyze the phenotypic variation of 43 traits. A total of 2001 related single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) sites located within or near 1046 genes were detected through a genome-wide association study (GWAS). The 32 root traits were linked to SNPs that corresponded to 317 nonrepetitive genes. For SNPs associated with root length and 0-0.5 mm diameter root traits, a significant peak appeared on chromosome A05 (between 21.91 and 22.24 Mb). For SNPs associated with root surface area, root volume and 0.5-2 mm diameter root traits, a significant peak appeared on chromosome D04 (between 7.35 and 7.70 Mb). Within these two key regions, SNPs were detected in the promoter and coding regions of two candidate genes, GhTRL1-A05 and GhPIN8-D04. The expression levels of these two genes also changed significantly according to transcriptome sequencing and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). After silencing the GhTRL1 and GhPIN8 genes via virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS), we found that the plants expressing TRV2::GhTRL1 and TRV2::GhPIN8 had a reduced root length, surface area. Moreover, the contents of cis-12-oxo-phytodienoic acid (cis-OPDA), isopentenyl adenosine (iPR) and cis-zeatin (cZ) in the roots of the plants expressing TRV2::GhTRL1 decreased. This study contributes to the cultivation and improvement of cotton varieties.

BACKGROUND: A symptomatic postoperative pseudocyst (PP) is a cystic lesion that is formed in the operation area of the intervertebral disc, leading to worse symptoms. Some minority patients who developed PP experienced rapidly aggravating symptoms and could not be treated by any kind of conservative treatment. However, no clinical studies have evaluated the clinical characteristics and surgical strategies of symptomatic PP requiring a revision surgery after full-endoscopic lumbar discectomy (FELD). This study aimed to demonstrate the clinical characteristics and surgical strategies of symptomatic PP requiring a revision surgery after FELD. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of patients who received FELD revision surgeries due to symptomatic PP formation between January 2016 and December 2021. Common characteristics, time intervals of symptom recurrence and revision surgery, strategies for conservative treatment and revision surgery, operative time, imaging characteristics, numeric rating scale (NRS) score, Oswestry disability index (ODI) and overall outcome rating based on modified MacNab criteria were analyzed. RESULTS: Fourteen patients (males = 10, females = 4), with a mean age of 24.4 years, were enrolled. The mean time intervals of symptom recurrence and revision surgery were 43.5 and 18.9 days respectively. While the patients were conservatively managed with analgesics and physical therapy, pain persisted or progressively worsened. In comparison to the initial herniated disc, the PP was larger in 11 cases, and up- or down-migrated in four cases. The PP location included the lateral recess (n = 12), foraminal (n = 1), and centrolateral (n = 1) zones. One of the two cases treated by percutaneous aspiration (PA) was eventually treated by FELD as pain was not relieved. Follow-ups revealed an improved mean NRS score from 7.1 to 1.4, mean ODI from 68.6 to 7.9% and promising overall surgical outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: The progressively severe pain experienced due to PP might be a result of its enlargement or migration to the lateral recess and foraminal zones. As complete removal of capsule is the goal, we recommend FELD instead of PA.

BACKGROUND: It is well known that sepsis is a prevalent severe disease caused by infection and the treatment strategies are limited. Recently pericyte-derived microvesicles (PMVs) were confirmed to be therapeutic in many diseases, whether PMVs can protect vascular endothelial cell (VEC) injury is unknown. METHODS: Pericytes were extracted from the retina of newly weaned rats, and PMVs were collected after starvation and characterized by flow-cytometry and transmission electron microscopy. First, the effect of PMVs on pulmonary vascular function in septic rats was measured via intravenous administration with HE staining, immunofluorescence, and Elisa analysis. Then, PMVs were co-incubated with VECs in the presence of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and observed the protective effect of PMVs on VECs. Next, the proteomic analysis and further Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis were performed to analyze the therapeutic mechanism of PMVs, and the angiogenesis-related protein CTGF was highly expressed in PMVs. Finally, by CTGF upregulation and downregulation in PMV, the role of PMV-carried CTGF was investigated. RESULTS: PMVs restored the proliferation and angiogenesis ability of pulmonary VECs, and alleviated pulmonary vascular leakage in septic rats and LPS-stimulated VECs. Further study showed that PMVs delivered CTGF to VECs, and subsequently activated ERK1/2, and increased the phosphorylation of STAT3, thereby improving the function of VECs. The further study found CD44 mediated the absorption and internalization of PMVs to VECs, the anti-CD44 antibody inhibited the protective effect of PMVs. CONCLUSIONS: PMVs may delivery CTGF to VECs, and promote the proliferation and angiogenesis ability by activating the CTGF-ERK1/2-STAT3 axis, thereby protecting pulmonary vascular function in sepsis. The therapeutic effect of PMVs was highly related to CD44-mediated absorption. Video Abstract.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in urban China generally face operational difficulties. To comprehensively analyze the current operation status and determine the factors that caused difficulties in urban domestic WWTPs, we conducted a questionnaire survey, and 18 operating conditions of scale-level WWTPs in seven regions in China were investigated. The research results showed that, of the 467-urban domestic WWTPs surveyed in China, approximately 63.17% of the WWTPs' hydraulic loading rates (HLRs) are greater than 80%, 67.02% of the WWTPs have mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentrations greater than 4000 mg/L, and 95.93% of the WWTPs' mixed liquor volatile suspended solids to mixed liquor suspended solids (MLVSS/MLSS) ratios are lower than 0.7. The WWTP energy consumption accounts for approximately 1% of the national electricity consumption, and approximately 100,000 tons of various chemicals are consumed every year. A high HLR, a high activated sludge concentration and low sludge activity, design value mismatches with actual values, high energy and material consumption, etc. have become the main operational difficulties of urban domestic WWTPs. In this study, the main barriers that hinder improving the operating efficiency of WWTPs were investigated, the causes of operational dilemmas were analyzed, and pathways were jointly explored to solve them. This study may provide valuable implications for industry practitioners with a comprehensive grasp of the industry's current status and related policy formulation.

OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of ultrasound-guided (US-guided) versus landmark-guided (LM-guided) local corticosteroid injection for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). METHODS: Database including Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched to identify relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The outcomes mainly included Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ): Symptom Severity Scale (BCTQs), Functional Status Scale (BCTQf); and electrophysiological indexes: distal motor latency (DML), sensory distal latency (SDL), compound muscle action potential (CAMP), sensory nerve action potential amplitude (SNAP), and sensory nerve conduction velocity (SNCV). Adverse events were also recorded. RESULTS: Overall, nine RCTs were finally screened out with 469 patients (596 injected hands). Pooled analysis showed that US-guided injection was more effective in BCTQs (SMD, -0.69; 95% CI, -1.08 to -0.31; P = 0.0005), BCTQf (SMD, -0.23; 95% CI, -0.39 to -0.07; P = 0.005), CAMP (MD, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.35-0.94; P < 0.0001) improvement, and a lower rate of adverse events (RR, 0.34; 95% CI, 0.22-0.52; P < 0.00001). Subgroup analysis revealed that the US-guided injection had significantly better CMAP than the LM-guided for the in-plane approach (MD, 0.69; 95% CI, 0.36-1.01; P < 0.0001) but not for the out-plane approach (MD, 0.39; 95% CI, -0.39 to 1.17; P = 0.33). CONCLUSIONS: US-guided injection was superior to LM-guided injection in symptom severity, functional status, electrodiagnostic, and adverse events improvement for CTS. To some extent, the in-plane approach yields better results compared with the out-plane process under US guidance.

Carbon source production from primary sludge in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) via anaerobic fermentation process has been paid more attention. However, slow hydrolysis rate and low yield of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) limited its application. This study aimed at improving the anaerobic fermentation efficiency of primary sludge by alkali regulation (NaOH, Na2CO3 and Ca(OH)2), and revealing the mechanism. Results showed that three kinds of alkalis allowed enhancing hydrolysis and acidification, and reducing methane production in the anaerobic fermentation process of primary sludge. The Na2CO3 regulation contributed to highest yield and productivity of SCFAs, reaching 1626 mg COD/L and 0.189 g COD/g VSS at 4th day, respectively. Microbial community structure analysis indicated that the relative abundance of fermentative microbial community was improved in the alkali regulation system, where methanogenic archaea was effectively inhibited. The continuous flow experiment further verified that the Na2CO3 regulation could steadily increase yield of SCFAs in the anaerobic fermentation process of primary sludge, and the yield was also the highest among three kinds of alkali regulation.

The corrosion and odor in concrete sewers are mainly related to the sulfide production, which is, under certain circumstances, directly proportional to the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of the sewer. To reduce the corrosion and control the odor in concrete sewers, it is necessary to model the production of sulfide in the concrete sewers with different HRTs. However, previous researches were mostly carried out in simulated Perspex-made sewers, and the obtained theoretical formulas based on the Monod equation were impractical because of the complexity. An actual concrete pipe with domestic sewage was employed in this study to obtain a simple but practical model, which can be applied to quantitively describe the sulfide production according to the HRT of the sewer and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the sewage. The empirical equation obtained was rs = (0.045 × lnHRT + 0.071) × ([COD] - b)0.6, the coefficient is a logarithmic function of the HRT, and the sulfide production rate and COD have a power relationship. Based on the data of COD and HRT obtained in the realistic sewer, the production of sulfide in the sewer can be predicted for better maintaining sewers through sulfide control.

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease, commonly treated with inhaled therapy. Better understanding of the mechanisms of aerosol deposition is required to improve inhaled drug delivery. Three-dimensional ultrashort echo time (UTE) MRI acquisitions at 1.5 T were combined with spontaneous nose-only inhalation of aerosolized gadolinium (Gd) to map the aerosol deposition and to characterize signal enhancement in asthmatic rat lungs. The rats were sensitized to ovalbumin (OVA) to develop asthmatic models and challenged before imaging by nebulization of OVA to trigger asthmatic symptoms. The negative controls were not sensitized or challenged by nebulization of saline. The animal lungs were imaged before and after administration of Gd-based aerosol in freely breathing rats, by using a T1 -weighted 3D UTE sequence. A contrast-enhanced quantitative analysis was performed to assess regional concentration. OVA-sensitized rats had lower signal enhancement and lower deposited aerosol concentration. Their enhancement dynamics showed large inter-subject variability. The signal intensity was homogeneously enhanced for controls while OVA-sensitized rats showed heterogeneous enhancement. Contrast-enhanced 3D UTE was applied with aerosolized Gd to efficiently measure spatially resolved deposition in asthmatic lungs. The small administered dose (around 1 µmol/kg body weight) and the use of standard clinical MRI suggest a potential application for the exploration of asthma.

The enhancement of gibberellin (GA) on the activity of anaerobic ammonium oxidation(anammox) bacteria in short-term batch experiments(500 mL serum bottle) was studied in this paper. To make sure the accuracy of the data, each experiment group was conducted some statistical analysis. The results showed that GA played an important role in improving anammox activity when the GA dosage ranged from 0.1 to 1.5 mg L-1, and the total nitrogen removal rate (NRR) was increased by 34% when the GA dosage was 1 mg L-1. The monitoring results of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and biomass of anammox bacteria indicated that GA addition improved the secretion of EPS and the biomass increasing, whose amount achieved maximum under the GA dose of 1 mg L-1. Compared to the control test, the maximum improvement ratio of the EPS and biomass was 28.6% and 34%, respectively. In addition, the cloning results also indicated that the anammox bacterial community structure shifted in species level of Candidatus Brocadia genus during the experiment, and the most dominant anammox bacteria were Candidatus Brocadia fulgid.

A sequencing batch reactor (SBR)-anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) system was started up with the paddy soil as inoculated sludge. The key microbial community structure in the system along with the enrichment time was investigated by using molecular biology methods (e.g., high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing and quantitative PCR). Meanwhile, the influent and effluent water quality was continuously monitored during the whole start-up stage. The results showed that the microbial diversity decreased as the operation time initially and increased afterwards, and the microbial niches in the system were redistributed. The anammox bacterial community structure in the SBR-anammox system shifted during the enrichment, the most dominant anammox bacteria were CandidatusJettenia. The maximum biomass of anammox bacteria achieved 1.68×109copies/g dry sludge during the enrichment period, and the highest removal rate of TN achieved around 75%.

In wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) using the activated sludge process, two methods are widely used to improve aeration efficiency - use of high-efficiency aeration devices and optimizing the aeration control strategy. Aeration efficiency is closely linked to sludge characteristics (such as concentrations of mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) and microbial communities) and operating conditions (such as air flow rate and operational dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations). Moreover, operational DO is closely linked to effluent quality. This study, which is in reference to WWTP discharge class A Chinese standard effluent criteria, determined the growth kinetics parameters of nitrifiers at different DO levels in small-scale tests. Results showed that the activated sludge system could meet effluent criteria when DO was as low as 0.3mg/L, and that nitrifier communities cultivated under low DO conditions had higher oxygen affinity than those cultivated under high DO conditions, as indicated by the oxygen half-saturation constant and nitrification ability. Based on nitrifier growth kinetics and on the oxygen mass transfer dynamic model (determined using different air flow rate (Q'air) and mixed liquor volatile suspended solids (MLVSS) values), theoretical analysis indicated limited potential for energy saving by improving aeration diffuser performance when the activated sludge system had low oxygen consumption; however, operating at low DO and low MLVSS could significantly reduce energy consumption. Finally, a control strategy coupling sludge retention time and MLVSS to minimize the DO level was discussed, which is critical to appropriate setting of the oxygen point and to the operation of low DO treatment technology.

PURPOSE: Aerosol toxicology and drug delivery through the lungs, which depend on various parameters, require methods to quantify particle deposition. Intrapulmonary-administered MRI contrast agent combined with lung-specific imaging sequences has been proposed as a high performance technique for aerosol research. Here, aerosol deposition is assessed using ultra-short echo (UTE) sequences. METHODS: Before and after administration of Gd-DOTA-based aerosol delivered nose-only in free-breathing healthy rats, a T1 -weighted 3D UTE sequence was applied in a clinical 1.5 Tesla scanner. Administration lasted 14 min, and the experiment was performed on six rats. A contrast-enhanced quantitative analysis was done. RESULTS: Fifty percent signal enhancement was obtained in the lung parenchyma. Lung clearance of the contrast agent was evaluated to be 14% per h (corresponding to a characteristic clearance time of 3.6 h) and aerosol deposition was shown to be homogeneous throughout the lung in healthy rats. The total deposited dose was estimated to be 1.05 µmol/kg body weight, and the concentration precision was 0.02 mM. CONCLUSION: The UTE protocol with nebulized Gd-DOTA is replicable to significantly enhance the lung parenchyma and to map aerosol deposition. This functional strategy, applied in a clinical system with a clinical nebulization setup and a low inhaled dose, suggests a feasible translation to human.

Sludge settling and thickening occur simultaneously in secondary settling tanks (SSTs). The ability to accurately calculate the settling and thickening capacity of activated sludge was of great importance. Despite extensive studies on the development of settling velocity models for use with SSTs, these models have not been applied due to the difficulty in calibrating the related parameters. Additionally, there have been some studies of the thickening behavior of the activated sludge in SSTs. In this study, a novel settling and thickening model for activated sludge was developed, and the model was validated using experimental data (R2 = 0.830 to 0.963, p < 0.001), which is more reasonable for the characterization of the settling and thickening behavior of the activated sludge in an SST. The application of these models requires only one critical parameter, namely, the stirred sludge volume index SSVI3.5, which is readily available in a water resource recovery facility.

A hapten-grafted graphene-based biosensor by integrating both the graphene nanosheets and immunoassay sensing technologies was developed for ultrasensitive homogeneous competitive immunoassay of small molecules. The structure of hapten-grafted graphene avoids the activity loss of biomolecules immobilized onto the graphene surface and is beneficial to preserve the binding affinity between small molecule and its specific antibody. The sandwich structure formed between hapten-grafted graphene nanosheets and fluorescence-labeled antibody increases the quenching efficiency of the organic dye, thereby resulting in high signal-to-background ratios and improved sensitivity for Bisphenol A (BPA) detection. On the basis of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and homogeneous competitive immunoassay mechanism, high BPA concentrations in the sample reduce the amount of fluorescence-labeled anti-BPA antibody bound to graphene-BPA nanosheets, thus resulting in remarkable fluorescence signals. The linear quantification of BPA over concentration ranges from 0.5 to 50 nM with a detection limit determined as 0.12 nM. These findings show that the proposed method provides a powerful tool for the rapid and sensitive detection of small molecules in biological and environmental samples.
