RESUMO

AIM: This study aimed to compare the outcome of SCR and Pulpotomy in teeth with deep caries extending at least 75% into dentine. METHODOLOGY: This two-armed, parallel-group, randomized, superiority trial included vital mature permanent teeth with deep primary or secondary caries diagnosed radiographically as being at least 75% into the thickness of dentine, without clinical signs of symptomatic irreversible pulpitis or radiographic evidence of a periapical lesion. Carious teeth were blindly allocated to receive either SCR or Pulpotomy using computer-generated randomized patient codes concealed in opaque envelopes. All teeth were reviewed clinically and radiographically at 6 months and 1 year post-treatment. Using a significance level of p < .05, the log rank test and Cox proportional hazards regression were used to compare the outcome of SCR and Pulpotomy and to identify potential prognostic factors, respectively. RESULTS: In all, 58 teeth in the SCR group and 55 teeth in the pulpotomy group completed treatment, after excluding 6 teeth because they did not complete the allocated treatment and another due to severe periodontal disease. At one year, 57/58 (98.3%) teeth from the SCR group and 48/55 (87.3%) teeth from the Pulpotomy group were available for analysis. One tooth in the Pulpotomy group (2.1%) and eight teeth in the SCR group (14.0%) required the further intervention of root canal treatment (p < .05). There were no other significant prognostic factors for survival. Overall, 91.4% of teeth treated with either SCR or Pulpotomy survived without requiring further intervention over a period of one year. No other adverse events occurred over the review period. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, Pulpotomy fares better than SCR in preserving the remaining pulp and periapical health. As a treatment modality, Pulpotomy carries greater cost outlay to patient and takes a longer time to complete treatment than SCR. Long-term follow-up is needed to study the pulpal and restorative outcomes of Pulpotomy and SCR.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the rate of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) revision surgeries and clinical information of hip-/knee- PJI cases nationwide from 2015 to 2017 in China. Methods: An epidemiological investigation. A self-designed questionnaire and convenience sampling were used to survey 41 regional joint replacement centers nationwide from November 2018 to December 2019 in China. The PJI was diagnosed according to the Musculoskeletal Infection Association criteria. Data of PJI patients were obtained by searching the inpatient database of each hospital. Questionnaire entries were extracted from the clinical records by specialist. Then the differences in rate of PJI revision surgery between hip- and knee- PJI revision cases were calculated and compared. Results: Total of 36 hospitals (87.8%) nationwide reported data on 99 791 hip and knee arthroplasties performed from 2015 to 2017, with 946 revisions due to PJI (0.96%). The overall hip-PJI revision rate was 0.99% (481/48 574), and it was 0.97% (135/13 963), 0.97% (153/15 730) and 1.07% (193/17 881) in of 2015, 2016, 2017, respectively. The overall knee-PJI revision rate was 0.91% (465/51 271), and it was 0.90% (131/14 650), 0.88% (155/17 693) and 0.94% (179/18 982) in 2015, 2016, 2017, respectively. Heilongjiang (2.2%, 40/1 805), Fujian (2.2%, 45/2 017), Jiangsu (2.1%, 85/3 899), Gansu (2.1%, 29/1 377), Chongqing (1.8%, 64/3 523) reported relatively high revision rates. Conclusions: The overall PJI revision rate in 34 hospitals nationwide from 2015 to 2017 is 0.96%. The hip-PJI revision rate is slightly higher than that in the knee-PJI. There are differences in revision rates among hospitals in different regions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the tooth loss status of mandibular molars with furcation involvements after 5-year non-surgical periodontal treatment, and to analyze the factors that affected the tooth loss. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted in 79 patients with chronic periodontitis, who had received non-surgical periodontal treatment and 5 years of periodontal maintenance treatment in Department of Periodontology, Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology from 1988 to 2012. Their clinical indexes, including probing depth (PD), bleeding index (BI), furcation index (FI) and tooth mobility were both evaluated before treatment and at the last time of the maintenance treatment. Bone resorption at furcation area was measured at the first visit by periapical radiographs taken by professional doctors of medical imaging. The status of tooth loss after 5-year non-surgical periodontal treatment on mandibular molars with furcation involvement, and the factors that affected the tooth loss were analyzed. RESULTS: (1) Non-surgical treatment was significantly effective on the changes of PD in the patients of chronic periodontitis with furcation involvement, while the presence of furcation involvement could affect the improvement of PD here. (2) PD at the furcation area, tooth mobility, vertical bone resorption, and bone resorption area were all significant risk factors of mandibular molar missing (P<0.001), and the same with FI=3 and FI=4 (P=0.017, P=0.007), while age (P=0.703), gender (P=0.243) and smoking history (P=0.895) were not related to the tooth loss in this study. (3) The risk of tooth loss in mandibular molars with FI≥3 were significantly higher than those with FI≤2, and the survival rate of the former was less than 50%. CONCLUSION: The loss of mandibular molars with furcation involvement was related to the furcation involvement, meanwhile the degree of furcation involvement and bone resorption can significantly increase the risk of tooth loss.

RESUMO

AIM: To determine the expressions of hypoxia-related [hypoxia-inducible transcription factors (HIF)-1α, BCL2/adenovirus E1B 19 kDa protein-interacting protein 3 (BNIP3) and phospho-adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase (pAMPK)] and autophagy-related [microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3), beclin-1 (BECN-1), autophagy-related gene (Atg)5-12, and p62] proteins in human inflammatory periapical lesions. METHODOLOGY: Fifteen samples of radicular cysts (RCs) and 21 periapical granulomas (PGs), combined with 17 healthy dental pulp tissues, were examined. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect interleukin (IL)-1ß cytokine; immunohistochemical (IHC) and Western blot (WB) analyses were employed to examine autophagy-related and hypoxia-related proteins. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to explore the ultrastructural morphology of autophagy in periapical lesions. Nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis tests and Mann-Whitney U-tests were used for statistical analyses. RESULTS: ELISA revealed a significantly higher (P < 0.001) IL-1ß expression in periapical lesions than in normal pulp tissue. Immunoscores of IHC expressions of pAMPK, HIF-1α, BNIP3, BECN-1 and Atg5-12 proteins in periapical lesions were significantly higher (P < 0.001) (except BECN-1) than those in normal pulp tissue. The results of IHC studies were largely compatible with those of WB analyses, where significantly higher (P < 0.05) expressions of hypoxia-related and autophagy-related proteins (except BECN-1, p62 and LC3II in WB analyses) in periapical lesions were noted as compared to normal pulp tissue. Upon TEM, ultrastructural double-membrane autophagosomes and autolysosomes were observed in PGs and RCs. CONCLUSIONS: Autophagy associated with hypoxia may play a potential causative role in the development and maintenance of inflamed periapical lesions.

RESUMO

Home economics and health teachers are to be found in many parts of the world. They teach students about food in relation to its nutritional, safety and environmental properties. The effects of such teaching might be expected to be reflected in the food knowledge of adults who have undertaken school education in these areas. This study examined the food knowledge associations of school home economics and health education among Australian adults. Two separate online surveys were conducted nationwide among 2022 (November 2011) and 2146 Australian adults (November-December 2012). True/false and multiple choice questions in both surveys were used to assess nutrition, food safety and environmental knowledge. Knowledge scores were constructed and compared against respondents' experience of school health or home economics education via multiple regression analyses. The results from both studies showed that home economics (and similar) education was associated with higher levels of food knowledge among several age groups. The associations of home economics education with food knowledge differed across several Australian states and recall of home economics themes differed across the age groups. These findings suggest that home economics education may bring about long-lasting learning of food knowledge. Further research is required, however, to confirm the findings and to test the causal influence of home economics education on adults' food knowledge.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the role of oxycodone in acute lung injury(ALI) induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in rats. METHODS: Male SD rats were randomly allocated into 4 groups: control group, oxycodone group, LPS group, LPS+ oxycodone group. The effects of oxycodone on LPS-induced neutrophils influx, inflammatory cytokines release, pulmonary edema, apoptotic cell were examined. In addition, the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) in lung tissues was detected by Western blotting. RESULTS: Oxycodone significantly attenuated LPS-induced pulmonary histopathologic changes, alveolar hemorrhage, and neutrophil infiltration. The lung wet-to-dry weight ratio, was markedly decreased by oxycodone(5.60±0.24 vs 6.80±0.27, P<0.05 ). Moreover, oxycodone decreased the productions of the inflammatory cytokines including IL-1ß, TNF-α, HMGB-1((1 208±18)pg/ml, (1 660±14) pg/ml, (61±4) pg/ml , all P<0.05). Oxycodone treatment also reduced the concentration of apoptosis in lung tissues(18.6%±0.5%, P<0.05). Furthermore, the expression of TLR4 was significantly suppressed by oxycodone treatment in lung tissues(1.20±0.15, P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Oxycodone exerts protective effects on LPS-induced ALI in rats. The potential mechanism of this action may attribute partly to the inhibition of TLR4 activation.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of solid-state fermented cottonseed meal (FCSM) inclusion levels on the growth performance, serum biochemical parameters and hepatic lipid metabolism in geese from 28 to 70 d of age. A total of 288 twenty-eight-d-old male geese were randomly divided into 4 treatments with FCSM levels of 0, 5, 15 and 25% including 0, 22.74, 67.33, 111.27 mg FG/kg diet, respectively. Each treatment contained 6 replicates and 12 birds per replicate. Treatments of FCSM inclusions from 0 to 25% had no effect on growth rate and feed intake in geese during d 28 to 70. The F/G ratio was increased (P < 0.05) in geese fed the diet with 25% FCSM compared with birds fed the diet with 0% FCSM. Treatment with 25% FCSM levels had no effect on the contents of TC, TG, HDL-C, LDL-C, but increased (P < 0.05) AST and ALT activities in serum of geese at d 70. Treatment with 25% FCSM increased the contents of FG, HDL-C, TC, C18:2n6, C20:4n6 and PUFA and decreased (P < 0.05) the contents of NEFA, SFA, MUFA in liver compared with treatment of 0% FCSM inclusion. Additionally, treatment with 25% FCSM decreased (P < 0.05) the PPARα, AMPK, and LXR mRNA expression related to lipid deposition, and increased (P < 0.05) PPARγ and ACC mRNA expression related to lipolysis in liver compared with birds fed the diet with 0% FCSM. Overall, treatment with 0 to 15% FCSM (<=67.33 mg FG/kg diet) had no adverse effects on the growth performance and lipid metabolism of geese. However, treatment fed 25% FCSM (111.27 mg FG/kg diet) decreased feed efficiency and promoted hepatic lipid deposition associated with the alteration of related gene expression in geese at 28 to 70 d of age.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the concern about pollen broadcasting in Chinese population from multiple dimensions and to understand the information about allergic rhinitis (AR) in China by analyzing related factors. Methods: From March 1 to September 30, 2022, a large-scale multi-center cross-sectional survey was conducted based on the Questionnaire Star platform in 21 Chinese hospitals. A total of 7 056 subjects from 7 regions in China: Northeast, North, East, Central, South, Southwest, and Northwest China were included. Basic characteristics (including social demographic characteristics and disease characteristics of AR patients), concern about pollen broadcasting, the willingness of pollen-induced AR (PiAR) patients to receive pollen broadcasting, and the treatment satisfaction rate of AR patients were collected. The chi-square test, multivariate linear regression model, and Logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the concern about pollen broadcasting in the Chinese population and related factors from multiple dimensions. Results: Among 7 056 subjects, 23.02% were concerned about pollen broadcasting. Among 3 176 self-reported AR and 1 019 PiAR patients, 25.60% and 39.16% were concerned about pollen broadcasting, respectively, which was higher than that of non-AR or non-PiAR subjects (χ2 value was 21.74 and 175.11, respectively, both P<0.001). Among AR patients, the proportion of spring and autumn allergen-positive patients concerned about pollen broadcasting was higher than that in perennial allergen-positive patients (χ2 value was 20.90 and 19.51, respectively, both P<0.001). The proportion of AR patients with asthma, sinusitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases was higher than those without complications (χ2 value was 50.83, 21.97, 56.78, 7.62, respectively, all P<0.05). The proportion of AR patients in North China who could find pollen broadcasting locally was 31.01%, significantly higher than those in other regions (all P<0.05). Multivariate linear regression model analysis showed that among PiAR patients, those with higher per capita household income and higher AR disease cognition levels had been concerned about pollen broadcasting in the past, and those complicated with allergic conjunctivitis had stronger intention to receive pollen broadcasting (B value was 0.24, 0.13, 0.66, 0.47, respectively, all P<0.05). The higher the disease cognition level of PiAR patients, the stronger their willingness to actively participate in treatment (R2=0.72, P<0.001). Only 18.89% of AR patients felt satisfied with the treatment effect. Logistic regression analysis showed that in AR patients, the treatment satisfaction rate was significantly higher among those concerned about pollen broadcasting compared to those who were not (OR=1.83, P<0.001). Conclusions: Currently, the dissemination of pollen broadcasting in China is hindered by various factors such as disease cognition level. The treatment satisfaction among AR patients remains unsatisfactory.

RESUMO

Fifteen new polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed for the cuttlefish Sepiella maindroni. In 32 individuals from a wild population of coastal Ningde, Fujian Province, China, the number of alleles at these loci varied between 2 and 12, with an average of 5.86. The mean observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.6917 and 0.5993, respectively. Among these polymorphic microsatellite loci, 4 (SM2, SM19, SM40, and SM81) significantly deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium after sequential Bonferroni's correction. All of them were in linkage equilibrium. These microsatellite loci would be useful for evaluating the effect of releasing on extant S. maindroni populations as well as for investigating genetic diversity and population structure of this species.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate whether the developmental changes in glucose metabolism were associated with insulin signaling in the middle and later stages of goose embryos. Serum and liver were sampled on embryonic day 19, 22, 25, 28, and day of hatchment, with 30 eggs at each sampling time point, and 6 replicates of 5 embryos. The embryonic growth traits, serum glucose, hormone levels, and the hepatic mRNA expressions of target genes related to glucose metabolism and insulin signaling were measured at each time point. Relative body weight, relative liver weight, and relative body length decreased linearly and quadratically from embryonic day 19 to day of hatchment, while relative yolk weight decreased linearly from embryonic day 19 to day of hatchment. Serum glucose, insulin, and free triiodothyronine levels increased linearly with increasing incubation time, while no differences were observed in serum glucagon and free thyroxine levels. The hepatic mRNA expression related to glucose catabolism (hexokinase, phosphofructokinase, and pyruvate kinase) and insulin signaling (insulin receptor, insulin receptor substrate protein, Src homology collagen protein, extracellular signal-regulated kinase, and ribosomal protein S6 kinase, 70 ku) increased quadratically from embryonic day 19 to day of hatchment. The expression of citrate synthase and isocitrate dehydrogenase mRNA decreased linearly and quadratically respectively from embryonic day 19 to day of hatchment. Serum glucose levels were positively related to serum insulin (r = 1.00) and free triiodothyronine (r = 0.90) levels, as well as the hepatic mRNA expression of insulin receptor (r = 1.00), insulin receptor substrate protein (r = 0.64), extracellular signal-regulated kinase (r = 0.81), and ribosomal protein S6 kinase, 70 ku (r = 0.81) related to insulin signaling. In conclusion, glucose catabolism was enhanced and had positive correlations with the insulin signaling in the middle and later stages of geese embryogenesis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Preoperative acetabular cup templating has an important auxiliary effect on hip surgery. The traditional acetabular cup templating method requires the measuring person to have some experience in total hip replacement (THA) surgery since the measurement results vary from person to person with differences between different measuring persons. To obtain stable templating results, we designed a new acetabular cup templating method and tested the inter-person measuring differences and measurement accuracy of this method. Meanwhile, the clinical application of this method was preliminarily explored. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The pattern of this new method was manual labeling of imaging characteristic points and then programmed automatic measurements. The measurement process was performed entirely by orthopedic graduate students without any experience in hip replacement surgery. The inter-person measuring difference was evaluated by comparing the templating results of three measuring persons. The accuracy of the templating was evaluated by comparing the templating results with the actual size of the prosthesis in the surgery. The correlation between the position of the acetabular cup and the templating error was analyzed to explore the clinical significance of the templating results. This study was a retrospective study which included templating in a total of 406 cases for total hip replacement with cementless cup prosthesis. Digital measurements were performed using the Matlab software from MathWorks. The statistical comparison was performed using Kendall's W test. RESULTS: The results of the three measuring persons were completely identical in 61.8% (251/406) of cases, and the variation in 38.2% (155/406) of cases did not exceed one size of the acetabular cup. The Kendall's W coefficient was 0.977, and p < 0.01. The measurement accuracy is not as good as the traditional method in exactly accurate measurement and ±1 cup size, but it is similar to the traditional method in the ±2 cup sizes. The correlation between the templating error and the position evaluation of the implanted acetabular cups reveals: (1) larger the templating error, larger the proportion of the acetabular cups with poor position; (2) the proportion of acetabular cup with poor position slowly increased when the templating error was from 0 to 1 size, and the proportion rapidly increased when the templating error was from 1 to 2 size. CONCLUSION: All the patients with clear teardrop bottom and lateral superior edge of acetabulum were able to use our method to predict the size of the acetabular cup. The method has the following advantages: (1) it does not require the measuring person to have any previous experience of the THA surgery, which reduces the labor cost of the templating; (2) the differences between the measuring persons is small, the measurement result can be repeated; (3) it can predict the probability of acetabular cup with poor positioning according to the templating error, and thereby reminding the surgeon to recheck and correct the position of the acetabular cup in time during the surgery.

RESUMO

Zinc (Zn) deposition in egg yolk is essential for the rapid growth and complete development of the avian embryo. Thus, it is crucial to obtain maximal Zn mobilization at an appropriate time during development in favor of the survival of avian embryos. The aim of this study was to study the developmental change of Zn mobilization and gene expression related to key Zn transport proteins between the yolk sac membrane and embryonic liver from the incubation d 17 (E17) to d 32 (E32) during duck embryonic developing. The weights of duck embryo, embryo without yolk sac, and embryonic liver increased as well as the yolk sac weight decreased linearly (P < 0.0001) when incubation day increased. The Zn concentration in the yolk sac did not change from E17 to E29 and only declined significantly from E29 to E32 of duck embryos, while hepatic Zn level decreased linearly as with the increased incubation time (P < 0.01). When the incubation day increased, the decreased Zn amount in the yolk sac and the increased Zn amount in the embryonic liver were observed (P < 0.0001). The calculated transfer-out rate of Zn in the yolk sac and transfer-in rate of Zn in livers were both increased from E23-26 to E29-32 (P < 0.01). Among E17, E23 and E29, the solute carrier family 39 member (ZIP) of ZIP10, ZIP13, and ZIP14 genes mRNA expressions were increased in yolk sac membrane but were decreased in the embryonic liver, while metallothionein 1 mRNA expression was increased both in the yolk sac membrane and liver (P < 0.05). In conclusion, yolk sac membrane and embryonic liver tissues displayed the similar developmental patterns of Zn mobilization and metallothionein 1 mRNA expression from E17 to E32 during duck embryonic developing. The appropriate time of the maximal rate of Zn mobilization were observed between E29 and E32 of duck embryo, associated with the significant changes of gene expression related to some key Zn transport proteins on E29 in yolk sac membrane and liver tissues.

RESUMO

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) is proved being effective in eliminating oil from aqueous solutions, but the elimination is expensive because free HRP can not be reused. In present work, HRP was successfully immobilized on cordierite porous ceramics support with a novel method of N-beta-aminoethyl-gamma-aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane modification and glutaraldehyde activation. Under the optimized immobilized conditions, the actual immobilized HRP was 1.16 mg/g support, the activity of the immobilized HRP could reach as high as 1379.4 U/g support. Experiment results showed that the properties of storage stability, acid-base stability and the tolerance to the pH fluctuation of the immobilized HRP were better than those of the free HRP. The operation stability of the immobilized HRP was also good. The immobilized HRP is suitable for the oily wastewater treatment because of its reusability proved in this work.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the molluscicidal effect of 50% wettable powder of niclosamide ethanolamine salt (WPNES) against Oncomelania hupensis on the soil surface and inside the soil layer by immersion method in winter. METHODS: O. hupensis snails were placed on the soil surface and 2, 5 cm and 10 cm under the soil layer outdoors in winter, and then immersed in 50% WPNES at concentrations of 1 mg/L and 2 mg/L for 1, 3 d and 7 d, while dechlorinated water served as controls. Snail mortality was observed following immersion with 50% WPNES on the soil surface and inside the soil layer. RESULTS: Following immersion with 50% WPNES at concentrations of 2 mg/L and 1 mg/L outdoors in winter, the 3-day corrected snail mortality rates were 98.0% and 76.0% on the soil surface, and the 7-day corrected snail mortality rate was both 100.0%. Following immersion with 50% WPNES at concentrations of 2 mg/L and 1 mg/L outdoors in winter, the 7-day corrected snail mortality rates were 95.5% and 85.6% 2 cm below the soil layer, 66.0% and 6.4% 5 cm below the soil layer. However, the 7-day snail mortality rate swere comparable between the 50% WPNES treatment group (at 2 mg/L and 1 mg/L) and controls 10 cm below the soil layer (both P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Immersion of 50% WPNES at a concentration of 2 mg/L for 7 days presents a high molluscicidal efficacy against O. hupensis on the soil surface and 5 cm within the soil layers in winter.

RESUMO

Our study was aimed to investigate the effects of dietary metabolizable energy (ME) and crude protein (CP) levels on the digestive physiology in the jejunal fluid of Muscovy ducks to provide digestive parameters for in vitro digestion. There were 6 ME levels (11.0, 11.5, 12.0, 12.5, 13.0, and 13.5 MJ/kg; Exp. 1) and six CP levels (140, 155, 170, 185, 200, and 215 g/kg; Exp. 2) and each treatment included 6 replicates with 3 ducks each replicate. In Exp. 3, the comparison of energy utilization was investigated between in vivo and in vitro using the digestion parameters obtained from Exp. 1 and 2. As dietary ME was increased, the chymotrypsin activity was increased linearly (P < 0.05), and the concentrations of Ca2+, K+, and Mg2+ were increased quadratically (P < 0.05) in the jejunal fluid. As dietary CP was increased, amylase activity was increased linearly (P < 0.05), whereas trypsin and chymotrypsin activities and Ca2+ concentration were increased quadratically (P < 0.05). The pH values were decreased quadratically with the increased dietary ME or CP levels (P < 0.05). The optimal digestion parameters for energy feedstuffs with 307.26 U/mL amylase, 54.68 U/mL trypsin, 24.90 U/mL chymotrypsin, 104.39 mmol/L Na+, 51.25 mmol/L Cl-, and pH 7.79; for protein feedstuffs with 381.88 U/mL amylase, 72.84 U/mL trypsin, 11.98 U/mL chymotrypsin, 93.53 mmol/L Na+, 46.25 mmol/L Cl-, and pH 7.80, respectively. Using the optimal digestion parameters for in vitro digestion, energy utilization in vitro reflected the degree of the apparent energy utilization of corn, sorghum, and barley as well as true energy utilization of soybean meal, rapeseed meal, and cottonseed meal in vivo and the variation of digestion was lower in vitro than in vivo.

RESUMO

Antibody-blocking studies have demonstrated the role of CD6 in thymocyte-thymic epithelial (TE) cell adhesion. Here we report that CD6 expressed by COS cells mediates adhesion to TE cells and that this interaction is specifically blocked with an anti-CD6 monoclonal antibody (mAb) or with a mAb (J4-81) that recognized a TE cell antigen. We isolated and expressed a cDNA clone encoding this antigen and show that COS cells transfected with this cDNA bind a CD6 immunoglobulin fusion protein (CD6-Rg). This antigen, which we named ALCAM (activated leukocyte-cell adhesion molecule) because of its expression on activated leukocytes, appears to be the human homologue of the chicken neural adhesion molecule BEN/SC-1/DM-GRASP. The gene was mapped to human chromosome 3q13.1-q13.2 by fluorescence in situ hybridization of cDNA probes to metaphase chromosomes. We prepared an ALCAM-Rg fusion protein and showed that it binds to COS cell transfectants expressing CD6, demonstrating that ALCAM is a CD6 ligand. The observations that ALCAM is also expressed by activated leukocytes and that both ALCAM and CD6 are expressed in the brain suggest that ALCAM-CD6 interactions may play a role in the binding of T and B cells to activated leukocytes, as well as in interactions between cells of the nervous system.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The association between psychosocial factors and periodontal disease has been widely reported and might be modified by smoking status. This study investigated the association of periodontal status with psychosocial factors and smoking in a community population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A structured questionnaire was administered to a total of 1,764 civilian noninstitutional (general population excluding from nursing homes, sanitariums and hospitals) Taiwanese individuals to assess the presence and severity of psychosocial factors [using the 12-item Chinese health questionnaire (CHQ-12)], smoking habits and other related factors. Periodontal status was established using the community periodontal index and by measuring clinical loss of attachment. RESULTS: Psychological factors and smoking were significantly associated with loss of attachment (odds ratio = 1.69, 95% confidence interval = 1.01-2.77, comparing the CHQ-12 score of >or= 6 with the CHQ-12 score of 0-2 and p = 0.032 for linear trend; odds ratio = 2.21, 95% confidence interval = 1.45-3.37, comparing smokers with nonsmokers) but not with community periodontal index. The association was found to be stronger among smokers than among nonsmokers. Smokers with a CHQ-12 score of >or= 6 had a higher odds ratio of loss of attachment (odds ratio = 2.49, 95% confidence interval = 0.91-6.49) than nonsmokers (odds ratio = 1.43, 95% confidence interval = 0.76-2.58). For periodontal health measured using the community periodontal index, married and divorced/widowed subjects tended to have poorer periodontal health (odds ratio = 3.38, 95% confidence interval = 1.26-10.81 and odds ratio = 3.83, 95% confidence interval = 1.21-13.83, respectively) than single subjects among nonsmokers but not among smokers. CONCLUSION: Poor mental health had a stronger association with periodontal disease among smokers than among nonsmokers, especially in accumulative attachment loss. Our findings suggest that mental health and smoking might have a synergistic effect on the risk of developing periodontal disease.
