RESUMO

Based on the fact that cogwheels are indispensable parts in manufacturing, we present the acoustic resonance testing (ART) of small data on sintered cogwheels for quality control in the context of non-destructive testing (NDT). Considering the lack of extensive studies on cogwheel data by means of ART in combination with machine learning (ML), we utilize time-frequency domain feature analysis and apply ML algorithms to the obtained feature sets in order to detect damaged samples in two ways: one-class and binary classification. In each case, despite small data, our approach delivers robust performance: All damaged test samples reflecting real-world scenarios are recognized in two one-class classifiers (also called detectors), and one intact test sample is misclassified in binary ones. This shows the usefulness of ML and time-frequency domain feature analysis in ART on a sintered cogwheel dataset.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 can induce acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). In patients with congenital heart disease, established treatment strategies are often limited due to their unique cardiovascular anatomy and passive pulmonary perfusion. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the first case of an adult with single-ventricle physiology and bidirectional cavopulmonary shunt who suffered from severe COVID-19 ARDS. Treatment strategies were successfully adopted, and pulmonary vascular resistance was reduced, both medically and through prone positioning, leading to a favorable outcome. CONCLUSION: ARDS treatment strategies including ventilatory settings, prone positioning therapy and cannulation techniques for extracorporeal oxygenation must be adopted carefully considering the passive venous return in patients with single-ventricle physiology.

PURPOSE: To analyze the first results of calcium-phosphate-coated porous tibia cones. METHODS: Patients treated with TrabecuLink®-CaP Cones were retrospectively recruited from January 2016 to December 2017. These custom-made cones were produced using titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4 V (Tilastan®) and using additive manufacturing with a special calcium-phosphate coating (HX®-coating). Clinical outcome was evaluated using Oxford Knee Score. For radiological evaluation of the implants, patients sent us outpatient taken radiographs. A minimum follow-up of one year was required. Lastly, we analyzed postoperative complications and revision rates. RESULTS: 52 patients with revision knee arthroplasty (RKA) were recruited for final analysis, of whom, we had 17 septic RKAs (33%) and 35 aseptic cases of RKA (67%). The bone defects were grouped into 17 AORI Type 2A (32.7%), 14 Type 2B (26.9%) and 21 Type 3 (40.4%). After a mean follow-up of 22 months (13.2-34.8; SD = ± 10), we had 4 surgical revisions (7.7%), 2 septic and 2 aseptic cases. The mean Oxford Knee Score was 28.6 points (8-47; SD = ± 10). 22 of 28 radiographs (78.6%) showed regular positioning of the cones and TKAs at a mean follow-up of 16.8 months (13.2-34.8; SD = ± 6). Three patients (10.7%) showed slight radiolucencies in the bone-cement interfaces and 3 patients (10.7%) had beginning heterotopic ossifications. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows the initial clinical results of calcium-phosphate-coated tibia cones showing a good functional outcome. Further research should focus on long-term clinical and radiological follow-up.

Stochastic feed-in of fluctuating renewable energies is steadily increasing in modern electricity grids, and this becomes an important risk factor for maintaining power grid stability. Here, we study the impact of wind power feed-in on the short-term frequency fluctuations in power grids based on an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers test grid structure, the swing equation for the dynamics of voltage phase angles, and a series of measured wind speed data. External control measures are accounted for by adjusting the grid state to the average power feed-in on a time scale of 1 min. The wind power is injected at a single node by replacing one of the conventional generator nodes in the test grid by a wind farm. We determine histograms of local frequencies for a large number of 1-min wind speed sequences taken from the measured data and for different injection nodes. These histograms exhibit a common type of shape, which can be described by a Gaussian distribution for small frequencies and a nearly exponentially decaying tail part. Non-Gaussian features become particularly pronounced for wind power injection at locations, which are weakly connected to the main grid structure. This effect is only present when taking into account the heterogeneities in transmission line and node properties of the grid, while it disappears upon homogenizing of these features. The standard deviation of the frequency fluctuations increases linearly with the average injected wind power.

Power flow dynamics in electricity grids can be described by equations resembling a Kuramoto model of non-linearly coupled oscillators with inertia. The coupling of the oscillators or nodes in a power grid generally exhibits pronounced heterogeneities due to varying features of transmission lines, generators, and loads. In studies aiming at uncovering mechanisms related to failures or malfunction of power systems, these grid heterogeneities are often neglected. However, over-simplification can lead to different results away from reality. We investigate the influence of heterogeneities in power grids on stable grid functioning and show their impact on estimating grid stability. Our conclusions are drawn by comparing the stability of an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers test grid with a homogenized version of this grid.

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) is the most effective treatment available for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). Patient selection, surgical technique and perioperative management have improved patient outcomes, which are traditionally linked to surgical and center experience. However, optimal perfusion care has not been well defined. The goal of the international survey was to better characterize the contemporary perfusion management of PEA and highlight similarities and controversies. METHOD: The combined caseload of 15 participating centers was 5,066 cases. Topics queried included materials and types of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) equipment, choice of prime, fluid management, deep hypothermia strategy, temperature management, treatment of acid-base abnormalities and intraoperative hematocrit as well as anticoagulation management for heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. CONCLUSION: Our assessment could provide a base for further advancement and may help design future studies to elucidate the impact of perfusion in this challenging field.

INTRODUCTION: Mechanical failure due to dislocation, fracture and acetabular wear is a major complication associated with the use of spacers in the management of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). We have developed a novel custom-made spacer in the setting of two-stage septic revision hip arthroplasty and present the preliminary results of our technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between May 2015 and November 2017, 30 patients underwent hip revision using the ENDO spacer technique in the setting of a two-stage septic exchange arthroplasty. The technique involves the dual mobility liner and the downsized stainless cemented straight stem in combination with antibiotic-loaded PMMA bone cement. The primary outcome measure was the overall spacer complication rate, particularly spacer dislocation. Furthermore, functional outcome using the Harris Hip Score (HHS) before spacer implantation and prior re-implantation was evaluated. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 69.8 years (range from 45 to 85; SD = 9.9 years). No microorganisms were preoperatively found in 23 (76.7%) cases. Successful re-implantation was performed in all patients after a mean spacer duration time of 53.6 days (range 14-288 days; SD = 48.2). Spacer-related complications occurred in only two patients (6.7%). The HHS significantly improved from 34.0 (range 3-62; SD = 15.1) to 48.1 (range 11-73; SD = 15.7) (p = 0.0008). CONCLUSIONS: The ENDO spacer surgical technique is a feasible option in the treatment of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), with a low dislocation rate. Furthermore, it allows early mobilization with the possibility of full-weight bearing.

In women breast cancer is still the most commonly diagnosed cancer. This type of cancer is classified as a hormone-dependent tumor. Estrogen receptor (ER) expression and functional status contribute to breast cancer development and progression. Another important factor associated with cancer is hypoxia which is defined as the state of reduced oxygen availability in tissues. Intratumoral hypoxia results in the activation of the hypoxia inducible factors (HIFs). HIFs are heterodimeric transcription factors involved in the regulation of many cellular processes, such as angiogenesis, anaerobic metabolism, cell proliferation/survival, and promotion of metastasis. In this study we evaluated the interplay between hypoxia, HIF stabilization and the ER-α/ß-ratio in several ER-positive breast cancer cell lines. Hypoxia was shown to inhibit ER expression in ER-positive breast cancer cells. Further experiments using the hypoxia mimetic CoCl2 and HIF-1α knockdown cells indicated that the influence of hypoxia on breast cancer cells involves other pathways than the molecular oxygen sensing pathway. Moreover, we demonstrated that MCF-7 cells in long-term culture lost part of their ability to respond to hypoxic incubation. Understanding the relationships between HIF, ER-α and ER-ß expression holds the promise of the development of new therapeutic agents and may provide future advances in prognosis.

In recent years, the minimally invasive joint-preserving implant system has been developed. The main goal of this device is to unload the medial knee compartment without affecting the lateral compartment. The current authors describe a severe metallosis and elevated chromium in serum following implantation of the joint unloading implant system of a 50-year-old male patient, presented to our hospital 3 years after implantation of a KineSpring System into his left knee due to unicompartmental medial osteoarthritis (OA) in an external hospital. Radiographs showed radiological signs for loosening of the screws in the tibia and a progressive OA on the medial and patellofemoral compartments. Revision surgery with removing of the unloading device was performed at our hospital. The intraoperative situs presented a severe metallosis around the device. Five days after revision surgery, the laboratory parameters revealed an elevated value for chromium in serum, while nickel and cobalt values in serum were normal. Reliable clinical data about the long-term results of the KineSpring System is desperately needed. Further studies are warranted to work out the effects of cobalt and chromium levels and further side effects following the implantation of the extra-articular absorber system.

Previous work has highlighted the critical role of macroalgal productivity and dynamics in supporting and structuring marine food webs. Spatio-temporal variability in macroalgae can alter coastal ecosystems, a relationship particularly visible along upwelling-influenced coastlines. As a result of its equatorial location and nutrient rich, upwelling-influenced waters, the Galápagos Archipelago in the East Pacific, hosts a productive and biodiverse marine ecosystem. Reports and collections of macroalgae date back to the Beagle voyage, and since then, more than three hundred species have been reported. However, their ecology and functional role in the ecosystem is not well understood. According to various disparate and in part anecdotal sources of information, abundant and diverse communities exist in the Western regions of the archipelago, the North is essentially barren, and in the central/South abundance and distribution is variable and less well defined. Both oceanographic conditions and herbivore influence have been theorized to cause this pattern. Extensive changes in macroalgal productivity and community composition have occurred during strong ENSO events, and subsequent declines in marine iguana (an endemic and iconic grazer) populations have been linked to these changes. Iguanas are only one species of a diverse and abundant group of marine grazers in the system, highlighting the potentially important role of macroalgal productivity in the marine food web. This review represents a first compilation and discussion of the available literature and presents topics for future research.

Echinocandins are known as effective and safe agents for the prophylaxis and treatment of different cohorts of patients with fungal infections. Recent studies revealed that certain pharmacokinetics of echinocandin antifungals might impact clinical efficacy and safety in special patient populations. The aim of our study was to evaluate echinocandin-induced aggravation of cardiac impairment in septic shock. Using an in vivo endotoxemic shock model in rats, we assessed hemodynamic parameters and time to hemodynamic failure (THF) after additional central-venous application of anidulafungin (2.5 mg/kg of body weight [BW]), caspofungin (0.875 mg/kg BW), micafungin (3 mg/kg BW), and control (0.9% sodium chloride). In addition, echinocandin-induced cytotoxicity was evaluated in isolated rat cardiac myocytes. THF of the animals in the caspofungin group (n = 7) was significantly reduced compared to that in the control (n = 6) (136 min versus 180 min; P = 0.0209). The anidulafungin group (n = 7) also showed a trend of reduced THF (136 min versus 180 min; log-rank test P = 0.0578). Animals in the micafungin group (n = 7) did not show significant differences in THF compared to those in the control. Control group animals and also micafungin group animals did not show altered cardiac output (CO) during our experiments. In contrast, administration of anidulafungin or caspofungin induced a decrease in CO. We also revealed a dose-dependent increase of cytotoxicity in anidulafungin- and caspofungin-treated cardiac myocytes. Treatment with micafungin did not cause significantly increased cytotoxicity. Further studies are needed to explore the underlying mechanism.

Echinocandins have become the agents of choice for early and specific antifungal treatment in critically ill patients. In vitro studies and clinical case reports revealed a possible impact of echinocandin treatment on cardiac function. The aim of our study was to evaluate echinocandin-induced cardiac failure. Using an in vivo rat model, we assessed hemodynamic parameters and time to hemodynamic failure after central venous application (vena jugularis interna) of anidulafungin (low-dose group, 2.5 mg/kg body weight [BW]; high-dose group, 25 mg/kg BW), caspofungin (low-dose group, 0.875 mg/kg BW; high-dose group, 8.75 mg/kg BW), micafungin (low-dose group, 3 mg/kg BW; high-dose group, 30 mg/kg BW), and placebo (0.9% sodium chloride). Left ventricular heart tissue was collected to determine mitochondrial enzyme activity via spectrophotometric measurements. mRNA expression of transcriptional regulators and primary mitochondrial transcripts, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content, and citrate synthase activity were also explored. Animals receiving high-dose anidulafungin or caspofungin showed an immediate decrease in hemodynamic function. All of the subjects in these groups died during the observation period. Every animal in the untreated control group survived (P < 0.001). Hemodynamic failure was not noticed in the anidulafungin and caspofungin low-dose groups. Micafungin had no impact on cardiac function. In analyzing mitochondrial enzyme activity and mitochondrial transcripts, we found no association between echinocandin administration and the risk for hemodynamic failure. Further experimental studies are needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms involved in cardiotoxic echinocandin effects. In addition, randomized controlled clinical trials are needed to explore the clinical impact of echinocandin treatment in critically ill patients.

Effective management is essential for small-scale fisheries to continue providing food and livelihoods for households, particularly in developing countries where other options are often limited. Studies on the population dynamics and stock assessment on fishery target species are thus imperative to sustain their fisheries and the benefits for the society. In Lake Koka (Ethiopia), very little is known about the vital population parameters and exploitation status of the fishery target species: tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, common carp Cyprinus carpio and catfish Clarias gariepinus. Our study, therefore, aimed at determining the vital population parameters and assessing the status of these target species in Lake Koka using length frequency data collected quarterly from commercial catches from 2007-2012. A total of 20,097 fish specimens (distributed as 7,933 tilapia, 6,025 catfish and 6,139 common carp) were measured for the analysis. Von Bertalarffy growth parameters and their confidence intervals were determined from modal progression analysis using ELEFAN I and applying the jackknife technique. Mortality parameters were determined from length-converted catch curves and empirical models. The exploitation status of these target species were then assessed by computing exploitation rates (E) from mortality parameters as well as from size indicators i.e., assessing the size distribution of fish catches relative to the size at maturity (Lm), the size that provides maximum cohort biomass (Lopt) and the abundance of mega-spawners. The mean value of growth parameters L∞, K and the growth performance index ø' were 44.5 cm, 0.41/year and 2.90 for O. niloticus, 74.1 cm, 0.28/year and 3.19 for C. carpio and 121.9 cm, 0.16/year and 3.36 for C. gariepinus, respectively. The 95 % confidence intervals of the estimates were also computed. Total mortality (Z) estimates were 1.47, 0.83 and 0.72/year for O. niloticus, C. carpio and C. gariepinus, respectively. Our study suggest that O. niloticus is in a healthy state, while C. gariepinus show signs of growth overfishing (when both exploitation rate (E) and size indicators were considered). In case of C. carpio, the low exploitation rate encountered would point to underfishing, while the size indicators of the catches would suggest that too small fish are harvested leading to growth overfishing. We concluded that fisheries production in Lake Koka could be enhanced by increasing E toward optimum level of exploitation (Eopt) for the underexploited C. carpio and by increasing the size at first capture (Lc) toward the Lopt, range for all target species.

BACKGROUND: Superficial dorsal horn neurons of the spinal cord receive sensory information from Aδ and C fibers. According to their response to sustained depolarization, these cells can be divided into 3 groups: tonic (TFN), adapting (AFN), and single spike firing (SSN) neurons. During spinal and systemic administration of lidocaine, these neurons are exposed to different concentrations of the local anesthetic lidocaine. In this study, we explored its effect on the excitability of sensory neurons. METHODS: Whole-cell patch-clamp recordings from dorsal horn neurons of Wistar rats were used to study the action of lidocaine on firing properties. To estimate the impact of a blockade of voltage-gated potassium channels by lidocaine (100 µM) on the firing properties of different neurons, the sodium and potassium channel inhibition of lidocaine was investigated in the light of the effects of tetrodotoxin (TTX, 10 nM) and tetraethylammonium (10 mM). For statistical analysis, the Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed rank test was used throughout. RESULTS: All 3 types of neurons responded to lidocaine with changes in the shape of their action potentials. The peak amplitude of the single action potentials was decreased (P = 0.031, P = 0.013, and P = 0.014 for SSN, AFN, and TFN neurons, respectively), and the duration of the action potentials was increased (P = 0.016, P = 0.032, and P = 0.031 for SSN, AFN, and TFN neurons, respectively). The maximum positive slope (P = 0.016 and P = 0.0010 for SSN and AFN, respectively) and the negative slope (P = 0.016, P = 0.0025, and P = 0.020 for SSN, AFN, and TFN neurons, respectively) decreased after application of lidocaine. In tonically firing neurons, lidocaine reduced the repetitive firing (P = 0.0016), and this effect was mimicked by a combination of TTX and tetraethylammonium. In AFN, TTX mimicked the action of lidocaine. CONCLUSIONS: Lidocaine at low concentrations suppresses tonic firing neurons by interacting with voltage-gated potassium channels. The effects on adapting firing neurons can be explained by an interaction with voltage-gated sodium channels. In contrast, the firing pattern of SSN is not affected at the administered concentrations. This different sensitivity to low concentrations of sodium and particularly of potassium channel blockers might represent a novel approach for a differentiated blockade of different spinal dorsal horn neurons.

The shallow water pink shrimp (Farfantepenaeus notialis) is among the socioeconomically most important resources of the Caribbean. The lack of biological and fishery information is of great concern for the fisheries management authorities. The presented study therefore aimed at the investigation of the reproductive cycle, the size composition and the size at first maturity of this species as a basis for the ordination and management of this resource. The study was conducted from June 2012 to May 2013 off the coast of the Caribbean Sea of Colombia. A total of 5 356 individuals were collected, identified, classified and preserved for their subsequent analysis in the laboratory. Size, weight, sex and gonad stage were recorded for each specimen. Significant differences were found in sex ratio in all months sampled with a clear predominance of females. Mature females were found year-around, but two reproductive peaks were identified during the periods October-December and April-June. The mean catch total length size (MCS) for females and males was 148.00mm and 122.54mm, respectively. The mean size at maturity (LT50%) was 129.34mm for females and 97.77mm for males. MCS was always above LT50% for both sexes. Considering the large reduction in fishing effort in the Colombian Caribbean Sea over the last years, we could expect that the shrimp population is in a rebuilding process or perhaps it may be already restored.

Background: Nucleated red blood cells (nRBC) are precursor cells of the erythropoiesis that are absent from the peripheral blood under physiological conditions. Their presence is associated with adverse outcomes in critically ill patients. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of nRBC on mortality in intensive care unit (ICU) patients with COVID-19 acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Material and methods: This retrospective, observational cohort study analyzed data on 206 ICU patients diagnosed with COVID-19 ARDS between March 2020 and March 2022. The primary endpoint was ICU mortality, and secondary endpoints included ICU and hospital stay lengths, ventilation hours, and the time courses of disease severity scores and clinical and laboratory parameters. Results: Among the included patients, 68.9% tested positive for nRBC at least once during their ICU stay. A maximum nRBC of 105 µl-1 had the highest accuracy in predicting ICU mortality (area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristic [AUCROC] 0.780, p < 0.001, sensitivity 69.0%, specificity 75.5%). Mortality was significantly higher among patients with nRBC >105 µl-1 than ≤105 µl-1 (86.5% vs. 51.3%, p = 0.008). Compared to patients negative for nRBC in their peripheral blood, those positive for nRBC required longer mechanical ventilation (127 [44 - 289] h vs. 517 [255 - 950] h, p < 0.001), ICU stays (12 [8 - 19] vs. 27 [13 - 51] d, p < 0.001), and hospital stays (19 [12 - 29] d vs. 31 [16 - 58] d, p < 0.001). Peak Sepsis-related Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA), Simplified Acute Physiology Score, PaO2/FiO2, interleukin-6, and procalcitonin values were reached before the peak nRBC level. However, the predictive performance of the SOFA (AUCROC 0.842, p < 0.001) was considerably improved when a maximum SOFA score >8 and nRBC >105 µl-1 were combined. Discussion: nRBC predict ICU mortality and indicate disease severity among patients with COVID-19 ARDS, and they should be considered a clinical alarm signal for a worse outcome. nRBC are a late predictor of ICU mortality compared to other established clinical scoring systems and laboratory parameters but improve the prediction accuracy when combined with the SOFA score.

BACKGROUND: The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Nuclear Translocator (ARNT, HIF-1ß) is a member of the basic-Helix-Loop-Helix PER/ARNT/SIM (bHLH/PAS) protein family and a vital transcriptional regulator regarding development and physiological adaptation processes. ARNT is discussed to be linked with cancer, and other diseases. ARNT is known to be translocated into the cell nucleus, where accumulation of the protein takes place. ARNT is a heterodimerisation partner of the xenobiotic ligand activated Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AhR), the Single Minded proteins (SIM), the cardiovascular helix-loop-helix factor 1 and the Hypoxia Inducible Factor proteins (HIF-α). ARNT is obligatory for HIF-1, HIF-2 and HIF-3 binding to DNA. Whereas degradation of the HIF-α subunits is suppressed by hypoxia, ARNT is generally regarded as constitutively expressed in excess within the cell, and stabilisation is commonly thought to be oxygen-independent. However, we provide evidence that the regulation of ARNT is far more complex. The aim of our study was to reevaluate the regulation of ARNT expression. METHODS: We examined cell lines of different origin like MCF-7 and T47D (human breast cancer), HeLa (human cervix carcinoma), Hep3B and HepG2 (human hepatoma), Kelly (human neuroblastoma), REPC (human kidney) and Cos7 (primary primate kidney) cells. We used immunoblot analysis, densitometry, RT-PCR and transient transfection. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Our results show that ARNT protein levels are influenced by hypoxia and hypoxia mimetics such as cobalt(II)-chloride (CoCl2) and dimethyloxalylglycine (DMOG) in a cell line specific manner. We demonstrate that this effect might be triggered by HIF-1α which plays an important role in the process of stabilizing ARNT in hypoxia.

Ultrasonic Testing (UT) has seen increasing application of machine learning (ML) in recent years, promoting higher-level automation and decision-making in flaw detection and classification. Building a generalized training dataset to apply ML in non-destructive evaluation (NDE), and thus UT, is exceptionally difficult since data on pristine and representative flawed specimens are needed. Yet, in most UT test cases flawed specimen data is inherently rare making data coverage the leading problem when applying ML. Common data augmentation (DA) strategies offer limited solutions as they don't increase the dataset variance, which can lead to overfitting of the training data. The virtual defect method and the recent application of generative adversarial neural networks (GANs) in UT are sophisticated DA methods targeting to solve this problem. On the other hand, well-established research in modeling ultrasonic wave propagations allows for the generation of synthetic UT training data. In this context, we present a first thematic review to summarize the progress of the last decades on synthetic and augmented UT training data in NDE. Additionally, an overview of methods for synthetic UT data generation and augmentation is presented. Among numerical methods such as finite element, finite difference, and elastodynamic finite integration methods, semi-analytical methods such as general point source synthesis, superposition of Gaussian beams, and the pencil method as well as other UT modeling software are presented and discussed. Likewise, existing DA methods for one- and multidimensional UT data, feature space augmentation, and GANs for augmentation are presented and discussed. The paper closes with an in-detail discussion of the advantages and limitations of existing methods for both synthetic UT training data generation and DA of UT data to aid the decision-making of the reader for the application to specific test cases.

The brown sea cucumber fishery is active in the Galapagos Islands since the year 1991 after its collapse in mainland Ecuador. This paper analyzes the Galapagos Sea cucumber fishery over the past decade and the reasons for its management pitfalls and chronic over fishing, and proposes an improved strategy for estimating stock size and harvest potential. Based on the historical distribution of the fishing fleet and past fishery surveys, 15 macrozones were defined; their areas were estimated from the coastline to the 30m isobaths and the numbers of sample replicates per macrozone were calculated for a density estimate precision of +/-25%. Overall stock size was calculated by summing over all macrozones and was multiplied by 0.122 to obtain the annual quota. This multiplier was derived by inserting an exploitation rate of E=0.3 and a published natural mortality value of M=0.17 into Cadimas formula, thereby obtaining a more conservative precautionary quota estimate. Pre-fishery stock densities in 2009 were below the legal threshold value and the fishery remained closed. Mean densities were significantly lower in the deeper (>15m) than in the shallower (<15m) stratum, contrary to fishermen expectations. Through an empirical regression of (log) pre-fishery density versus subsequent annual catch for the period 1998-2008 we found that catches of most years greatly exceeded the here proposed quota explaining the collapsed nature of the stock.
