RESUMO

Artificial spin ices are engineered arrays of dipolarly coupled nanobar magnets. They enable direct investigations of fascinating collective phenomena from their diverse microstates. However, experimental access to ground states in the geometrically frustrated systems has proven difficult, limiting studies and applications of novel properties and functionalities from the low energy states. Here, we introduce a convenient approach to control the competing diploar interactions between the neighboring nanomagnets, allowing us to tailor the vertex degeneracy of the ground states. We achieve this by tuning the length of selected nanobar magnets in the spin ice lattice. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method by realizing multiple low energy microstates in a kagome artificial spin ice, particularly the hardly accessible long range ordered ground state-the spin crystal state. Our strategy can be directly applied to other artificial spin systems to achieve exotic phases and explore new emergent collective behaviors.

The ability to control the potential landscape in a medium of interacting particles could lead to intriguing collective behavior and innovative functionalities. Here, we utilize spatially reconfigurable magnetic potentials of a pinwheel artificial-spin-ice (ASI) structure to tailor the motion of superconducting vortices. The reconstituted chain structures of the magnetic charges in the pinwheel ASI and the strong interaction between magnetic charges and superconducting vortices allow significant modification of the transport properties of the underlying superconducting thin film, resulting in a reprogrammable resistance state that enables a reversible and switchable vortex Hall effect. Our results highlight an effective and simple method of using ASI as an in situ reconfigurable nanoscale energy landscape to design reprogrammable superconducting electronics, which could also be applied to the in situ control of properties and functionalities in other magnetic particle systems, such as magnetic skyrmions.

The motion of Abrikosov vortices in type-II superconductors results in a finite resistance in the presence of an applied electric current. Elimination or reduction of the resistance via immobilization of vortices is the "holy grail" of superconductivity research. Common wisdom dictates that an increase in the magnetic field escalates the loss of energy since the number of vortices increases. Here we show that this is no longer true if the magnetic field and the current are applied parallel to each other. Our experimental studies on the resistive behavior of a superconducting Mo0.79Ge0.21 nanostrip reveal the emergence of a dissipative state with increasing magnetic field, followed by a pronounced resistance drop, signifying a reentrance to the superconducting state. Large-scale simulations of the 3D time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model indicate that the intermediate resistive state is due to an unwinding of twisted vortices. When the magnetic field increases, this instability is suppressed due to a better accommodation of the vortex lattice to the pinning configuration. Our findings show that magnetic field and geometrical confinement can suppress the dissipation induced by vortex motion and thus radically improve the performance of superconducting materials.

1-naphthol (1-NAP) is the main metabolite of pesticide carbaryl and naphthalene, and is also a genotoxic and carcinogenic intermediate in the synthesis of organic compound, dyes, pigment and pharmaceutical industry. In this work, two novel haptens were designed and synthesized for developing a competitive indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ciELISA) method for 1-NAP in urine samples. The assay showed a limit of detection of 2.21 ng/mL and working range from 4.02 ng/mL to 31.25 ng/mL for 1-NAP in optimized working buffer. The matrix effect of samples was eliminated via 15-fold dilution of optimized working buffer. Good average recoveries (102.4%-123.4%) with a coefficient of variation from 11.7% to 14.7% was obtained for spiked urine samples. Subsequent instrument verification test showed good correlation between the results of ciELISA and high-performance liquid chromatography. The developed ciELISA is a high-throughput tool to monitor 1-NAP in urine, which can provide technical support for the establishment of biological exposure level for the exposure to carbaryl, naphthalene and other related pollutants.

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is the largest brominated flame retardant which can be released to environment and cause long-term hazard. In this work, we developed a rapid and highly sensitive fluorescence enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (FELISA) for monitoring of TBBPA in soil samples. TBBPA specific nanobody derived from camelid was fused with alkaline phosphatase to obtain the bi-functional fusion protein, which enable the specific binding of TBBPA and the generation of detection signal simultaneously. The assay showed an IC50 of 0.23 ng g-1, limit detection of 0.05 ng g-1 and linear range from 0.1 to 0.55 ng g-1 for TBBPA in soil samples. Due to the high resistance to organic solvents of the fusion protein, a simple pre-treatment by using 40% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as extract solvent can eliminate matrix effect and obtain good recoveries (ranging from 93.4% to 112.4%) for spiked soil samples. Good relationship between the results of the proposed FELISA and that of liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was obtained, which indicated it could be a powerful analytical tool for determination of TBBPA to monitor human and environmental exposure.

For monitoring of the residual of parathion pesticide in food, herein, a sensitive and reliable electrochemical immunosensor based on cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol/citric acid nanofiber membrane (PVA/CA NFM) and horseradish peroxidase labeled anti-parathion nanobody was constructed. Firstly, the cross-linked PVA/CA NFM with extra-high surface area and uniform morphology was prepared and characterized. Then, the immunosensor was assembled and its analytical performances were evaluated. It exhibited high specificity and sensitivity to parathion with the liner range and limit of detection being 0.01-100 ng/mL and 2.26 pg/mL, respectively. Moreover, the biosensor kept almost 75% of its initial activity after regenerating 4 times, and remained 85% after 9 weeks of storage. Finally, the average recoveries from food samples were 96.20%-114.61% with the coefficient of variation being 1.06%-5.28%, which was correlate well with UPLC (R2 = 0.9964). Therefore, the sensor was demonstrated to be a feasible alternative for sensitive assay of parathion.

Diazinon (DAZ) is an organophosphorus pesticide (OP), which is commonly used to prevent and control harmful pests that endanger agricultural products. In this study, we developed a novel heterology coating strategy for the immunoassay of DAZ. The DAZ coating hapten can be directly conjugated to the carrier protein without requiring a spacer arm. This proposed hapten coating strategy is time-saving and significantly improves the sensitivity of the immunoassay due to the lack of a spacer arm. The as-synthesized coating antigen was used to screen the monoclonal antibody (mAb). Finally, the developed indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunoassay (icELISA) showed IC50 and limit of detection (LOD) values of 0.58 ng mL-1 and 8 pg mL-1, respectively. This method exhibited negligible cross-reactivity towards other analogues, and the recoveries of samples (cucumber, cabbage, and lettuce) ranged from 92.6% to 125.4%, with coefficients of variance (CV) below 12%. Good correlation between icELISA and high-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was obtained. The proposed icELISA was an ideal tool for monitoring DAZ residues in food samples.

Carbamate pesticides (CPs) are the most used pesticides in agricultural production and pest control. In this study, carbofuran, isoprocarb and carbaryl were employed as models, and a general hapten strategy based on carbamate moiety recognition was proposed. Molecular modeling of the three-dimensional (3D) structure and surface electrostatic potential of the CPs indicated that the amide group formed by conjugation significantly influenced recognition by antibodies. The proposed strategy was used to obtain three sensitive and specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) with IC50 values of 1.4 ng/mL, 8.4 ng/mL and 13.8 ng/mL for carbofuran, isoprocarb and carbaryl, respectively. Negligible cross-reactivity (%) with analogs was observed, except for fenobucarb (84.6%) for isoprocarb. The obtained antibodies were used to develop an immunochromatographic assay (ICA) to simultaneously and quantitatively detect the three CPs. A strip reader was used to determine the limits of quantitation (LOQs) as 0.05 ng/mL (carbofuran), 31.3 ng/mL (isoprocarb) and 31.3 ng/mL (carbaryl). The recoveries of cucumber and Chinese cabbage samples ranged from 76% to 111%, with CVs from 1.3% to 10.6%, indicating good potential for the rapid simultaneous detection of multiple pesticide residues in a large batch of samples.

A superconducting diode is an electronic device that conducts supercurrent and exhibits zero resistance primarily for one direction of applied current. Such a dissipationless diode is a desirable unit for constructing electronic circuits with ultralow power consumption. However, realizing a superconducting diode is fundamentally and technologically challenging, as it usually requires a material structure without a centre of inversion, which is scarce among superconducting materials. Here, we demonstrate a superconducting diode achieved in a conventional superconducting film patterned with a conformal array of nanoscale holes, which breaks the spatial inversion symmetry. We showcase the superconducting diode effect through switchable and reversible rectification signals, which can be three orders of magnitude larger than that from a flux-quantum diode. The introduction of conformal potential landscapes for creating a superconducting diode is thereby proven as a convenient, tunable, yet vastly advantageous tool for superconducting electronics. This could be readily applicable to any superconducting materials, including cuprates and iron-based superconductors that have higher transition temperatures and are desirable in device applications.

The natural mycotoxin tenuazonic acid (TeA) in foods is identified as the most toxic mycotoxin among the over 70 kinds of secondary toxic metabolites produced by Alternaria alternata. Some hapten-antibody-mediated immunoassays have been developed for TeA detection in food samples, but these methods show unsatisfactory sensitivity and specificity. In this study, a rationally designed hapten for TeA mycotoxin generated with computer-assisted modeling was prepared to produce a highly specific camel polyclonal antibody, and an indirect competitive chemiluminescence enzyme immunoassay (icCLEIA) was established with a limit of detection of 0.2 ng mL-1 under optimized conditions. The cross-reactivity results showed that several analogs and some common mycotoxins had negligible recognition by the anti-TeA polyclonal antibody. The average recoveries spiked in fruit juices were determined to be 92.7% with an acceptable coefficient of variation, and good correlations between icCLEIA and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) results were obtained in spiked samples. This developed icCLEIA for TeA detection with significantly improved sensitivity and satisfactory specificity is a promising alternative for environmental monitoring and food safety.

Nanobodies are one-tenth the size of conventional antibodies and are naturally obtained from the atypical heavy-chain-only antibodies present in camelids. Their small size, high solubility, high stability, and strong resilience to organic solvents facilitate their use as novel analytical reagents in immunochemistry. In this study, specific nanobodies against pesticide carbofuran were isolated and characterized from an immunized library via phage display platform. We further established an indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using nanobody Nb316 to detect carbofuran in vegetable and fruit samples. The results showed a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 7.27 ng/mL and a detection limit of 0.65 ng/mL. A simplified sample pretreatment procedure omitting the evaporation of organic solvent was used. The averaged recovery rate of spiked samples ranged between 82.3% and 103.9%, which correlated with that of standard UPLC-MS/MS method. In conclusion, a nanobody with high specificity for carbofuran was characterized, and a nanobody-based sensitive immunoassay for simple and rapid detection of carbofuran in real samples was validated.

Two-dimensional topological materials bearing time reversal-breaking magnetic fields support protected one-way edge modes. Normally, these edge modes adhere to physical edges where material properties change abruptly. However, even in homogeneous materials, topology still permits a unique form of edge modes - kink modes - residing at the domain boundaries of magnetic fields within the materials. This scenario, despite being predicted in theory, has rarely been demonstrated experimentally. Here, we report our observation of topologically-protected high-frequency kink modes - kink magnetoplasmons (KMPs) - in a GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) system. These KMPs arise at a domain boundary projected from an externally-patterned magnetic field onto a uniform 2DEG. They propagate unidirectionally along the boundary, protected by a difference of gap Chern numbers ([Formula: see text]) in the two domains. They exhibit large tunability under an applied magnetic field or gate voltage, and clear signatures of nonreciprocity even under weak-coupling to evanescent photons.

Negative longitudinal magnetoresistances (NLMRs) have been recently observed in a variety of topological materials and often considered to be associated with Weyl fermions that have a defined chirality. Here we report NLMRs in non-Weyl GaAs quantum wells. In the absence of a magnetic field the quantum wells show a transition from semiconducting-like to metallic behaviour with decreasing temperature. We observe pronounced NLMRs up to 9 Tesla at temperatures above the transition and weak NLMRs in low magnetic fields at temperatures close to the transition and below 5 K. The observed NLMRs show various types of magnetic field behaviour resembling those reported in topological materials. We attribute them to microscopic disorder and use a phenomenological three-resistor model to account for their various features. Our results showcase a contribution of microscopic disorder in the occurrence of unusual phenomena. They may stimulate further work on tuning electronic properties via disorder/defect nano-engineering.

The charge and spin of the electrons in solids have been extensively exploited in electronic devices and in the development of spintronics. Another attribute of electrons-their orbital nature-is attracting growing interest for understanding exotic phenomena and in creating the next-generation of quantum devices such as orbital qubits. Here, we report on orbital-flop induced magnetoresistance anisotropy in CeSb. In the low temperature high magnetic-field driven ferromagnetic state, a series of additional minima appear in the angle-dependent magnetoresistance. These minima arise from the anisotropic magnetization originating from orbital-flops and from the enhanced electron scattering from magnetic multidomains formed around the first-order orbital-flop transition. The measured magnetization anisotropy can be accounted for with a phenomenological model involving orbital-flops and a spin-valve-like structure is used to demonstrate the viable utilization of orbital-flop phenomenon. Our results showcase a contribution of orbital behavior in the emergence of intriguing phenomena.

In this study novel immunoconjugates were designed, synthesized and then used to develop a rapid, specific and sensitive indirect ELISA method to directly detect residues of 3,5-dinitrosalicyclic acid hydrazide (DNSH), a toxic metabolite of nifursol present in chicken tissues. The hapten DNSHA was first designed and used to covalently couple to BSA to form an immunogen which was immunized to rabbits to produce a polyclonal antibody against DNSH. Furthermore, a novel 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acidovalbumin (DNSA-OVA) immunoconjugate structurally different from DNSHA-OVA was designed and used as a "substructural coating antigen" to improve the sensitivity of an indirect ELISA analysis for a direct DNSH detection. Based on the "substructural coating antigen" concept, an optimized indirect ELISA method was established that exhibited good specificity and high sensitivity for detecting DNSH, with a cross-reactivity of less than 0.1% (excluding the parent compound nifursol), IC(50) of 0.217 nmol/mL and detection limit of 0.018 nmol/mL. Finally, a simple and efficient analysis of DNSH samples in chicken tissues showed that the average recovery rate of the indirect ELISA analysis was 82.3%, with the average coefficient of variation 15.9%. Thus, the developed indirect ELISA method exhibited the potential for a rapid detection of DNSH residues in tissue.

Geometric frustration emerges when local interaction energies in an ordered lattice structure cannot be simultaneously minimized, resulting in a large number of degenerate states. The numerous degenerate configurations may lead to practical applications in microelectronics1, such as data storage, memory and logic2. However, it is difficult to achieve very high degeneracy, especially in a two-dimensional system3,4. Here, we showcase in situ controllable geometric frustration with high degeneracy in a two-dimensional flux-quantum system. We create this in a superconducting thin film placed underneath a reconfigurable artificial-spin-ice structure5. The tunable magnetic charges in the artificial-spin-ice strongly interact with the flux quanta in the superconductor, enabling switching between frustrated and crystallized flux quanta states. The different states have measurable effects on the superconducting critical current profile, which can be reconfigured by precise selection of the spin-ice magnetic state through the application of an external magnetic field. We demonstrate the applicability of these effects by realizing a reprogrammable flux quanta diode. The tailoring of the energy landscape of interacting 'particles' using artificial-spin-ices provides a new paradigm for the design of geometric frustration, which could illuminate a path to control new functionalities in other material systems, such as magnetic skyrmions6, electrons and holes in two-dimensional materials7,8, and topological insulators9, as well as colloids in soft materials10-13.

Artificial ices enable the study of geometrical frustration by design and through direct observation. However, it has proven difficult to achieve tailored long-range ordering of their diverse configurations, limiting both fundamental and applied research directions. We designed an artificial spin structure that produces a magnetic charge ice with tunable long-range ordering of eight different configurations. We also developed a technique to precisely manipulate the local magnetic charge states and demonstrate write-read-erase multifunctionality at room temperature. This globally reconfigurable and locally writable magnetic charge ice could provide a setting for designing magnetic monopole defects, tailoring magnonics, and controlling the properties of other two-dimensional materials.

A new multianalyte immunoassay was designed to screen furaltadone metabolite 5-morpholinomethyl-3-amino-2-oxazolidone (AMOZ), malachite green (MG), and leucomalachite green (LMG) in aquatic products using a bispecific monoclonal antibody (BsMAb). Gradient drug mutagenesis methods were separately used to prepare an anti-3-nitrobenzaldehyde-derivatized AMOZ (3-NPAMOZ) hybridoma cell line that was hypoxanthine-guanine-phosphoribosyltransferase (HGRPT) deficient and an anti-LMG hybridoma cell line that was thymidine kinase (TK) deficient. BsMAb recognizing 3-NPAMOZ and LMG was generated using hybrid-hybridomas of HGRPT and TK deficient cell lines. For AMOZ and LMG, respectively, the BsMAb-based indirect competitive ELSIA (ic-ELISA) values of 1.7 ng/mL and 45.3 ng/mL and detection limits of 0.2 ng/mL and 4.8 ng/mL. To establish the ic-ELISA, 3-NPAMOZ derivatized from AMOZ with 3-nitrobenzaldehyde and LMG reduced from MG by potassium borohydride was recognized by BsMAb. Recoveries of AMOZ, MG, and LMG in aquatic products were satisfactory and correlated with HPLC analysis. Thus, the multianalyte ic-ELISA is suitable for rapid quantification of AMOZ, MG, and LMG in aquatic products.

The high level of acrylamide in widely consumed processed foods poses a potentially significant risk to human health, which has led to an increasing demand for rapid, simple, and selective analytical methods. In the present work, several haptens for acrylamide were designed in an attempt to prepare antibodies with acrylamide affinity, but they failed their purpose. However, a polyclonal antibody was produced against 4-mercaptophenylacetic acid (4-MPA)-derivatized acrylamide, which showed high binding affinity to the derivative. As acrylamide easily reacted with 4-MPA at high derivation yield, a competitive indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ciELISA) for acrylamide via a preanalysis derivatization was developed. The derivatization and ELISA conditions were fully optimized to produce a method for acrylamide assay that exhibited an IC50 of 2.86 µg/kg, limit of detection at 0.036 µg/kg, and linear range of 0.25-24.15 µg/kg. The results of preanalysis recovery tests of acrylamide-spiked food samples and screening of blind food samples by both ciELISA and HPLC-MS/MS indicated the proposed ciELISA's good accuracy and reliability. This method was thus deemed suitable for routine acrylamide screening in food samples at low cost.
