RESUMO
Two novel heteropolyoxomolybdate [XMo8O31]n- (X = Ge(1) or P(2)) manganese carbonyl derivatives [(CH3)4N]6H6{MnII(GeMo8O31)[MnI(CO)3]2}2·12H2O (1) and [(CH3)4N]4H6{MnII(PMo8O31)[MnI(CO)3]2}2·14H2O (2), have been successfully synthesized and characterized in the solid state by single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR and thermogravimetric analysis, and in solution by UV-Vis spectroscopy and electrochemistry. The two polyoxomolybdate-based organometallic compounds 1 and 2 represent rare examples of transition metal sandwich-based polyoxometalate metal carbonyl derivatives (PMCDs), in which the organic-inorganic hybrids are composed of four Mn(CO)3⺠groups symmetrically occupied the tetravacant sites of dimeric heteropolyoxomolybdate {Mn2(XMo8O31)2}n- through MnI-O-Mo bonds. The carbonyl functionalized Mn atoms are octahedrally coordinated via three µ2-oxygens of the [XMo8O31]n- unit and three carbonyl carbon atoms. Interestingly, 1 and 2 form a psedocuboidal ring Mn(CO)3Mo3O12 with {Mn(CO)3}⺠occupying the three fold axis of the Mo3O12 octahedral triad. Beside this, the two centrally placed adjacent MnII atoms show intramolecular MnâââMn interactions of 3.11 and 3.16 Å in 1 and 2, respectively. Significant nâπ* and O···O intermolecular interactions between the orthogonally aligned adjacent carbonyl groups through the overlap of lone-pair electrons on oxygen atoms with the antibonding orbital (π*) of the adjacent carbony carbon atom of the subsequent units in 1 and 2 were observed. The electrochemical properties of the two compounds were also been investigated.

Pyoverdine (PVD) plays an important role in reducing cadmium (Cd) accumulation in plants. Some Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) species can produce PVD under Cd(Π) stress. However, the function of Cd(Π)-induced PVD remains unclear. In this study, we isolated a highly effective Cd(Π)-resistant P. aeruginosa which can secrete PVD under Cd(Π) stress and found that PVD secretion has a dose-dependent relationship with Cd(Π) concentration. PVD can form a PVD-Cd complex with Cd(Π), though the PVD-Cd complex is unable to be adsorbed by the cell or enter the cell, so the complexation of PVD and Cd(Π) impedes Cd(Π) adsorption on the cell surface and alleviates the oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, and morphological destruction of the cell caused by Cd(Π) and effectively improves the resistance of P. aeruginosa to Cd(Π). In summary, our research results indicate that the Cd(Π) resistance mechanism of P. aeruginosa screened is the complexation of PVD for Cd(Π) and the adsorption of bacteria for Cd(Π); furthermore, PVD plays an important role in improving the Cd(Π)-resistant ability of bacteria. This study provides a deeper understanding of the highly effective Cd(Π) resistance mechanism of P. aeruginosa and the function of Cd(Π)-induced PVD in bacteria.

Antimony (Sb) pollution seriously endangers ecological environment and human health. Microbial induced mineralization can effectively convert metal ions into more stable and less soluble crystalline minerals by extracellular polymeric substance (EPS). In this study, an efficient Sb-resistant Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (R. mucilaginosa) was screened, which can resist 41 mM Sb(III) and directly transform Sb(III) into Sb2O3 microcrystals by EPS. The removal efficiency of R. mucilaginosa for 22 mM Sb(III) reached 70% by converting Sb(III) to Sb2O3. The components of supernatants as well as the effects of supernatants and pH on Sb(III) mineralization verified that inducible and non-inducible extracellular protein/polysaccharide biomacromolecules play important roles in the morphologies and sizes control of Sb2O3 formed by R. mucilaginosa respectively. Sb2O3 microcrystals with different morphologies and sizes can be prepared by the regulation of inducible and non-inducible extracellular biomacromolecules secreted by R. mucilaginosa. This is the first time to identify that R. mucilaginosa can remove Sb(III) by transforming Sb(III) into Sb2O3 microcrystals under the control of EPS. This study contributes to our understanding for Sb(III) biomineralization mechanisms and provides strategies for the remediation of Sb-contaminated environment.

In this study, Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA-1, a manganese-oxidizing bacterium screened from the soil at a manganese mining area, was found to be tolerated to Sb(III) stress during the Mn(II) oxidation, and the generated biological manganese oxide (BMO) outperformed the identical type of Abiotic-MnOX in terms of oxidation and adsorption of Sb(III). Adsorption kinetics and isotherm experiments indicated that Sb(III) was primarily adsorbed through chemisorption and multilayer adsorption on BMO; the maximum adsorption capacity of BMO was 143.15 mg·g-1. Removal kinetic studies showed that the Sb(III) removal efficiency by BMO was 72.38-95.71% after 15 min, and it could be up to 96.32-98.31% after 480 min. The removal procedure could be divided into two stages, fast (within 15 min) and slow (15 ~ 480 min), both of which exhibited first-order kinetic behavior. Dynamic fitting in two steps revealed that the removal speed correlated to the level of dissolved Sb(III) with low Sb(III) concentrations, but with the initial concentration being high, the removal speed rate was independent of dissolved Sb(III). During the whole process, the Sb(III) removal speed by BMO was also higher than that by the Abiotic-MnOX. Combining multiple spectroscopic techniques revealed that Sb(V) was generated through the Sb(III) oxidation by BMO and replacing surface metal hydroxyl groups to form the complex internal Mn-O(H)-Sb(V) or generating stable Mn(II)-antimonate precipitates on the surface. In addition, microbial metabolites, including tryptophan and humus, in BMO may be complex with Sb(III) and Sb(V) to achieve the treatment of Sb(III). This research investigates the factors and mechanisms influencing the adsorption and removal of Sb(III) by BMO, which could aid in its future engineering applications for the BMO.

Since 2010, the Tembusu virus (TMUV) has been highly prevalent in China, causing significant economic losses to the poultry industry. In 2022, a suspected outbreak of TMUV occurred at a goose farm located in Anhui Province. A strain of TMUV, TMUV HQ-22, was isolated from the infected geese. Phylogenetic analysis using the E gene of the HQ-22 strain demonstrated its affiliation with cluster 3, a less commonly reported cluster in comparison to the main circulating cluster, cluster 2. Through a comparison of the envelope (E) protein of HQ-22 with other typical TMUV strains, a mutation at the 157th amino acid position was identified, wherein valine (V) in cluster 3 changed to alanine (A), a characteristic that is unique to cluster 2. These findings highlight the diversity and complexity of the TMUV strains circulating in China. In our experimental analysis, an injection of TMUV HQ-22 into the muscles of 3-day-old goslings resulted in severe neurological symptoms and a mortality rate of 60%. Similarly, the intracranial or intranasal infection of 3-week-old ICR mice with TMUV HQ-22 led to severe neurological symptoms and respective mortality rates of 100% or 10%. In summary, our study isolated a TMUV strain, TMUV HQ-22, from geese that belongs to cluster 3 and exhibits significant pathogenicity in both goslings and ICR mice. These results emphasize the genetic diversity of the TMUV circulating in China and expand the host range beyond mosquitoes to include ducks, chickens, geese, and even mice. It is crucial to not underestimate the risk of TMUV infection in mammals, warranting our utmost attention.

Yak is one of the largest native mammalian species at the Himalayas, the highest plateau area in the world with an average elevation of >4,000 m above the sea level. Yak is well adapted to high altitude environment with a set of physiological features for a more efficient blood flow for oxygen delivery under hypobaric hypoxia. Yet, the genetic mechanism underlying its adaptation remains elusive. We conducted a cross-tissue, cross-altitude, and cross-species study to characterize the transcriptomic landscape of domestic yaks. The generated multi-tissue transcriptomic data greatly improved the current yak genome annotation by identifying tens of thousands novel transcripts. We found that among the eight tested tissues (lung, heart, kidney, liver, spleen, muscle, testis, and brain), lung and heart are two key organs showing adaptive transcriptional changes and >90% of the cross-altitude differentially expressed genes in lung display a nonlinear regulation. Pathways related to cell survival and proliferation are enriched, including PI3K-Akt, HIF-1, focal adhesion, and ECM-receptor interaction. These findings, in combination with the comprehensive transcriptome data set, are valuable to understanding the genetic mechanism of hypoxic adaptation in yak.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the therapeutic effects of distal humeral lateral closing wedge osteotomy followed by modified pinning combined with external tension band fixation in the treatment of cubitus varus deformity in children. METHODS: Total 26 adult patients with cubitus varus deformity were treated by operation from March 2011 to June 2015, 15 patients were boys and the other 11 patients were girls, ranging in age from 4 to 13 years, with an average of 7.8 years. The cubitus varus angel ranged from 11 degrees to 24 degrees, with a mean(17.50±6.73) degrees, 3 patients complicated more than 10 degrees constriction of flexion. Lateral closing wedge osteotomy retaining the medial 3 to 4 mm intact cortex by lateral elbow approach was applied in these 26 patients. The wedge defect were closed and fixed by crossing pinning. The lateral column compression was achieved with external tension band(the crossing pins were bended laterally and the pin ends were hooked mutually). The pre-operative, post-oparetive and contralateral carrying angles were compared and Laupattarakasem criteria was used to evaluate the results at follow-up. RESULTS: All the patients got bony union 2 months after operation and there was no infection or nerve palsy. The average follow-up period was 18.8 months (ranged, 13 to 29 months). The carrying angle was restored to(11.50±3.17) degrees(ranged, 8 to 14 degrees). According to the Laupattarakasem evaluation criteria, 14 patients got an excellent result, 13 good and 1 fair. CONCLUSIONS: Normal carrying angle and elbow flexion could be restored by lateral closing wedge osteotomy, and stable fixation could be achieved with crossing pinning and external tension band, which is available for early mobilization.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the approach of open reduction and internal fixation for the treatment of anteromedial coronoid facet fractures and associated injury. METHODS: From July 2009 to August 2011, 6 coronoid anteromedial facet fractures were treated (4 males and 2 females, the average age was 32.6 years old, ranged from 19 to 49 years old) in our hospital. Three patients had fractures in the left side and 3 in the right(4 dominant sides and 2 non dominant sides). All the patients had close fractures. All the fractures were subtype 2 or subtype 3 of coronoid anteromedial facet fracture according to O'Driscoll classification. The anteromedial incision of elbow and the approach of splitting flexor digitorum superficialis between flexor carpi radialis and palmaris longus were used to apply internal fixation with mini-plate. After fixation of coronoid fracture, widening of radiohumeral joint interspace under varus stress occurred in 3 cases, elbow varus posteromedial rotational instability was showed, and the exploration and repair of radial collateral ligament was not carried out. Plaster was applied for 2 weeks before rehabilitation and the time of plaster application extended to 4 weeks in the patients showed varus posteromedial rotational instability. The motion degree, pain and stability, strength of elbow and hand were recorded, the elbows were evaluated with modified An and Morrey functional rating index. RESULTS: All the patients were followed up,and the average duration was 9.3 months (ranged from 7.5 to 13 months). The strength of elbow and hand were equal to that in the contralateral side. The average flexion was (129.0+/-6.5) degree (ranged from 120 to 135 degree); the average extention was (4.0+/-4.2) degree (ranged from 0 to 10 degree); the average forearm pronation was (84.0+/-6.5) degree (ranged from 75 to 90 degree); average supination was (89.0+/-7.1) degree (ranged from 80 to 100 degree). One patient had ulnar sensory neuropathy after operation and healed in half-year, no postoperative complications as pain and instability accured. All the patients obtained excellent results according to modified An and Morrey functional rating index. CONCLUSION: The approach of splitting flexor digitorum superficialis between flexor carpi radialis and palmaris longus could be used in open reduction and internal fixation of anteromedial coronoid facet farcture, rehabilitation should be postponed in the patient showed elbow varus posteromedial rotational instability.
