RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is prevalent in Asia including Taiwan. We retrospectively evaluated the risk of HBV reactivation and clinical outcomes in HBV+ and HBV- kidney transplant recipients. METHODS: Patients who underwent kidney transplantation between January 2004 and December 2021 were reviewed. The outcomes of interest included risks of HBV reactivation and patient/graft survival. RESULTS: We identified 337 patients (47.5 ± 12 years) in our final cohort. Fifty-two (15.4%) had hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positive at the time of transplantation. Seventeen developed viral reactivations, with 41.2% of them accompanied by active hepatitis. The graft survival, acute rejection rate, and cancer development after kidney transplantation did not differ in terms of HBsAg status. The Cox multivariate analysis indicated the HBV reactivation risk was increased by a lack of pretransplant anti-HBV medication (hazard ratio [HR], 5.95; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.31-27.02; p = 0.021) or an absence of lifelong antiviral therapy (HR: 3.14; 95% CI: 1.01-9.74; p = 0.047). CONCLUSION: Individuals, independent of HBsAg status, had similar prognosis in terms of patient and graft survival, acute rejection rate, and cancer development. The absence of either pretransplant anti-HBV medication or lifelong antiviral therapy was significantly associated with an increased risk of HBV reactivation.

RESUMO

In this work, sea urchin-like magnetic Fe3O4@CA/BNNS/AgNP composite microspheres were successfully prepared. The photocatalytic performance of composite microspheres for the organic dye rhodamine B (RhB) was systematically investigated under different conditions, and the catalytic degradation rate of RhB was as high as 95% within 60 min; after three cycles of recycling, the degradation rate of RhB was reduced by only 8%. The main active agents in the reaction are e- and •O2-. Fe3O4@CA/BNNS/AgNP microspheres prepared in this study exhibit photocatalytic and electrochemical properties, making them easy to separate. This work is not limited to the development of Fe3O4-based catalysts but also is expected to provide ideas for the research and progress of photocatalytic composite catalysts with electrochemical properties.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The Chinese Healthy Eating Index (CHEI) is a valid instrument to assess the diet quality of the Chinese population, but evidence regarding the relationship between CHEI and the risk of diabetes remains limited. We aimed to investigate the prospective association of CHEI with diabetes among Chinese adults. METHODS: 1563 adults free of diabetes at baseline and with at least two survey data from 1997 to 2018 were included. Dietary information was collected by three consecutive 24-h recalls combined with household food inventory, and long-term diet quality was evaluated by the CHEI. Diabetes was defined as self-reported physician-diagnosed diabetes and/or fasting blood glucose ≥ 7.0 mmol/L, and/or HbA1c ≥ 6.5%. Cox proportional hazard models and restricted cubic spline analysis were used to estimate the associations between CHEI and diabetes. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 12.0 years, 192 (10.3%) participants developed new-onset diabetes. Generally, a five-point higher CHEI score was significantly associated with a 17% lower risk of diabetes (HR, 0.83; 95%CI 0.71-0.97). In stratified analysis, inverse associations between CHEI and diabetes were more vigorous in females (HR, 0.68; 95%CI 0.54-0.85) than in males (P for interaction = 0.01). In addition, there was an L-shaped association between CHEI and diabetes risk in the whole population (P for non-linearity = 0.026), while no significant non-linear association was observed in females or males, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our results suggested that a long-term higher-quality diet evaluated by CHEI was significantly associated with lower risks of diabetes, and the favorable associations were more pronounced among females.

RESUMO

Cellular senescence and iron accumulation were separately observed in diabetic nephropathy (DN). Limited evidence supports that iron was significantly accumulated in senescent cells. We aimed to explore whether iron is involved in the pathogenesis role of senescence in DN. Renal cells were treated with high glucose (HG, 35 mM) for 10 or 15 days, and DN mice were induced by high-fat diet and streptozotocin. Gene ontology enrichment, gene set enrichment analysis analysis, ß-galactosidase staining, 5-ethynyl-2-deoxyuridine staining, and western blot depicted the upregulated senescence pathway in vitro and in vivo of DN. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release was increased by HG and reversed by p16/p21 knockdown, and the supernatant of HG-treated cells caused increased LDH release from normal cells. Iron metabolism-related protein expression was disordered after HG exposure concomitant with senescence. Ferric ammonium citrate (50 µM) upregulated gamma-H2A.X variant histone and increased the senescence markers in HG-treated cells. The treatment of deferoxamine (0.5 µM) had the opposite effect. Compared to the non-DN individual, increased ferritin and senescence markers were verified in DN mice and patients, and the co-localization of ferritin and senescence markers was observed by immunofluorescence. These results suggested that accumulated iron was correlated with aggravated DNA damage and accelerated senescence, and revealed the role of iron in the cellular senescence of diseases.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The objective of this research was to explore the associations between dietary PUFAs intake and hyperuricemia risk. METHODS AND RESULTS: Based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003-2015, all eligible individuals were divided into hyperuricemia and non-hyperuricemia groups based on diagnostic criteria for hyperuricemia (serum uric acid >420 µmol/L for men and >360 µmol/L for women). Multivariate-adjusted logistic regression was employed to explore the relationship between dietary PUFAs intake and hyperuricemia risk. Total PUFAs and their subtypes were modeled to isocalorically replace saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs). Higher intake of n-3 PUFAs, n-6 PUFAs, linoleic acid (LA), alpha-linoleic acid (ALA), and non-marine PUFAs intake correlated with decreased hyperuricemia risk, with adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CIs) were 0.77 (0.63, 0.93), 0.75 (0.61, 0.92), 0.75 (0.61, 0.91), 0.69 (0.55, 0.87), and 0.73 (0.59, 0.91), respectively. Replacing 5% of total energy intake from SFAs with isocaloric PUFAs was associated with decreased odds of hyperuricemia in men (0.69 (0.57, 0.84)) and in individuals (0.81 (0.71, 0.92)). Similar trends were observed in the substitution of SFAs with non-marine PUFAs in men (0.87 (0.80, 0.94)) and in all individuals (0.92 (0.88, 0.98)). Sensitivity analyses exhibited consistent results with primary analyses. CONCLUSION: Higher dietary intake of n-3 PUFAs, n-6 PUFAs, LA, ALA, and non-marine PUFAs was associated with decreased hyperuricemia risk. These results support the recommendation to substitute SFAs with PUFAs in diet.

RESUMO

Droughts and heat waves exhibit synergistic effects and are among the world's most costly disasters. To explore the spatiotemporal differences and formation mechanisms of the combined vulnerability to droughts and heat waves in Shandong Province over the past 20 years, a vulnerability scoping diagram (VSD) model with three dimensions-exposure, sensitivity, and adaptability-was constructed to assess and compare the combined vulnerability to high-temperature and drought events, considering economic and social conditions. The results showed that (1) over the past 20 years, heat waves and droughts have increased in Shandong Province. The number of high-temperature events significantly increased in the west and decreased along the eastern coast, and drought change was characterized by an increase in the south and a decrease in the north. (2) The combined exposure to summer droughts and heat waves in Shandong Province showed a significant increasing trend (P < 0.05) at a rate of approximately 0.072/10a; the combined sensitivity significantly decreased (P < 0.05) at a rate of approximately 0.137/10a, and the combined adaptability continued to increase at a rate of approximately 0.481/10a. (3) The combined vulnerability to summer droughts and heat waves in the western inland area of Shandong Province was high and gradually decreased toward the southeastern coast. The overall decrease trend was nonsignificant with a decrease of approximately 0.126/10a, and the decline rate decreased from northwest to southeast, in which Laiwu, Yantai, Jinan, and Zibo cities exhibited a significant decreasing trend (P < 0.05). Although the compound vulnerability of Shandong Province has decreased insignificantly, the frequency of combined drought and heat wave events has increased, and the combined vulnerability will increase in the future.

RESUMO

While land transportation is crucial for social development, it also introduces various pollutants, including heavy metals, which pose risks to both the environment and human health. This issue is particularly acute in mining areas, yet research focusing on heavy metal accumulation in soils and plants along transportation routes in these areas has been limited. Addressing this gap, this study investigates soil contamination levels and heavy metal concentrations in dominant plants along a highway and railway in the vicinity of the Dexing Copper Mine, the largest open-pit copper mine in China, located in Jiangxi Province. These transportation routes are heavily utilized for ore transportation, making them critical areas for environmental monitoring. Results reveal that the primary heavy metal contaminants in the soil were Cu (84.9 to 2554.3 mg/kg), Pb (38.3 to 2013.4 mg/kg), Cd (0.1 to 46.6 mg/kg), Zn (81.3 to 875.8 mg/kg), and As (11.8 to 2985.2 mg/kg), with significantly higher concentrations found in soils adjacent to the railway compared to the highway. Specifically, for plants along the highway, Cyperus rotundus showed a significant enrichment in Cd and demonstrated a notable capacity to translocate heavy metals from its roots to aerial parts. This is evidenced by the elevated concentration of Cd in the plant's aboveground tissues (0.87 mg/kg). Notably, both the bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) values exceeded 1, ranging from 1.07 to 3.62. Contrastingly, despite the elevated heavy metal concentrations in soils adjacent to the railway, plants in these areas did not exhibit hyperaccumulation characteristics. The unique behavior of Cyperus rotundus in accumulating and translocating Cd underscores its potential role in phytoremediation, particularly in the context of environmental management for areas impacted by mining activities, such as those surrounding China's largest copper mine.

RESUMO

Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) technology enables the fabrication of functionally graded materials (FGMs) by adjusting the wire feed speed of different welding wires in a layer-by-layer manner. This study aimed to produce SS 316L/Inconel 625 FGMs with varying transition compositions using dual-wire arc additive manufacturing (D-WAAM). An optimization strategy for transition gradients was implemented to exclude component regions that are prone to defect formation (notably cracking), as well as to retain other component regions, thereby enhancing the overall mechanical properties of FGMs. The study revealed grain boundary cracking and demonstrated the lowest microhardness and tensile properties within a 20 wt.% Inconel 625 transition gradient zone, which negatively impacts the overall mechanical properties of FGMs. Then, as the content of Inconel 625 in the first transition region increased, cracks disappeared, microhardness increased and better tensile properties were obtained. The most optimal mechanical properties were enriched at 50 wt.% Inconel 625 content. In conclusion, the compositional gradient optimization strategy proves efficacious in eliminating component regions with poor mechanical properties and microdefects, ensuring excellent overall mechanical characteristics of FGMs.

RESUMO

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) and the training requirements of pediatric intensive care nurses regarding intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) monitoring, in order to provide a reference for the development of relevant training programs and operational procedures in clinical practice. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted from April 2023 to June 2023. A convenience sample was created by recruiting 212 pediatric intensive care nurses in eight hospitals in Zhejiang Province. A self-developed IAP monitoring KAP assessment tool was used for evaluation, which included knowledge (14 items), attitude (6 items), and practice (8 items), three dimensions, 28 items. Results: The overall KAP score was 60.73 ± 8.35; the knowledge score was 7.84 ± 2.35, with a scoring rate of 56.0%; the attitude score was 25.16 ± 3.23, with a scoring rate of 83.9%; and the practice score was 28.44 ± 6.46, with a scoring rate of 69.3%. Nurses wh-o have received IAP monitoring training have higher KAP score, knowledge score and practice score than those who have not received it (P < 0.05). Nurses aged ≤ 30 showed better knowledge of IAP monitoring than those aged > 30 (P < 0.05). Among the participants, 55.7% of the nurses believed the current knowledge was insufficient to perform IAP measurement effectively. Difficulty in identifying the high-risk population of intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) (64.6%), unfamiliarity with the operation process of IAP measurement (55.6%), and unreasonable nurse-patient ratio allocation (52.8%) were the main obstacles for nurses to monitor IAP. Conclusions: Pediatric intensive care nurses have a positive attitude towards IAP monitoring, but the knowledge level and practical behavior still need to be strengthened. In particular, the knowledge of published consensus definitions, measurement techniques, and frequency for IAP monitoring is inadequate. It is necessary to implement tailored IAP monitoring training based on their training needs and potential obstacles to promote the standardization and scientificity of IAP monitoring.

RESUMO

Atherosclerosis (AS) with iron and lipid overload and systemic inflammation is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. M1 macrophage/microglia participate in neuronal pyroptosis and recently have been reported to be the ferroptosis-resistant phenotype. Quercetin plays a prominent role in preventing and treating neuroinflammation, but the protective mechanism against neurodegeneration caused by iron deposition is poorly understood. ApoE-/- mice were fed a high-fat diet with or without quercetin treatment. The Morris water maze and novel object recognition tests were conducted to assess spatial learning and memory, and nonspatial recognition memory, respectively. Prussian blue and immunofluorescence staining were performed to assess the iron levels in the whole brain and in microglia, microglia polarization, and the degree of microglia/neuron ferroptosis. In vitro, we further explored the molecular biological alterations associated with microglial polarization, neuronal pyroptosis, and ferroptosis via Western blot, flow cytometry, CCK8, LDH, propidium iodide, and coculture system. We found that quercetin improved brain lesions and spatial learning and memory in AS mice. Iron deposition in the whole brain or microglia was reversed by the quercetin treatment. In the AS group, the colocalization of iNOS with Iba1 was increased, which was reversed by quercetin. However, the colocalization of iNOS with PTGS2/TfR was not increased in the AS group, suggesting a character resisting ferroptosis. Quercetin induced the expression of Arg-1 and decreased the colocalizations of Arg-1 with PTGS2/TfR. In vitro, ox-LDL combined with ferric ammonium citrate treatment (OF) significantly shifted the microglial M1/M2 phenotype balance and increased the levels of free iron, ROS, and lipid peroxides, which was reversed by quercetin. M1 phenotype induced by OF caused neuronal pyroptosis and was promoted to ferroptosis by L-NIL treatment, which contributed to neuronal ferroptosis as well. However, quercetin induced the M1 to M2 phenotype and inhibited M2 macrophages/microglia and neuron pyroptosis or ferroptosis. In summary, quercetin alleviated neuroinflammation by inducing the M1 to M2 phenotype to inhibit neuronal pyroptosis and protected neurons from ferroptosis, which may provide a new idea for neuroinflammation prevention and treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cold-dampness-type knee osteoarthritis is a common middle-aged and elderly disease, but its pathogenesis is not fully understood, and its clinical treatment has limitations. Glucosamine sulfate capsules are commonly used for treating arthritis, and San Bi Tang is a classic formula of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that has the effects of warming yang, dispelling dampness, relaxing muscles, and activating collaterals. This research hypothesized that the combination of modified San Bi Tang and glucosamine sulfate capsules could enhance the clinical efficacy of treating cold-dampness-type knee osteoarthritis through complementary effects. AIM: To analyze the clinical efficacy of San Bi Tang combined with glucosamine sulfate capsules when treating cold-dampness-type knee osteoarthritis. METHODS: A total of 110 patients with cold-dampness-type knee osteoarthritis were selected as research subjects and randomly divided into a control group and an experimental group of 55 cases each. The control group received only treatment with glucosamine sulfate capsules, while the experimental group received additional treatment with modified San Bi Tang for a duration of 5 wk. The patients' knee joint functions, liver and kidney function indicators, adverse reactions, and vital signs were evaluated and analyzed using SPSS 26.0 software. RESULTS: Before treatment, the two groups' genders, ages, and scores were not significantly different, indicating comparability. Both groups' scores improved after treatment, which could indicate pain and knee joint function improvement, but the test group had better scores. The TCM-specific symptoms and the clinical efficacy of the treatment in the test group were higher. Before and after treatment, there were no abnormalities in the patients' liver and kidney function indicators. CONCLUSION: The combination of modified San Bi Tang and glucosamine sulfate capsules is superior to treatment with sulfated glucosamine alone and has high safety.

RESUMO

SCOPE: Iron deposition is frequently observed in alcoholic liver disease (ALD), which indicates a potential role of ferroptosis in its development. This study aims to explore the effects of quercetin on ferroptosis in ALD and elucidates the underlying mechanism involving the formation of mitochondria-associated endoplasmic reticulum membranes (MAMs) mediated by protein kinase RNA-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK). METHODS AND RESULTS: C57BL/6J mice are fed either a regular or an ethanol-containing liquid diet (with 28% energy form ethanol) with or without quercetin supplementation (100 mg kg-1 BW) for 12 weeks. Ethanol feeding or treatment induced ferroptosis in mice and AML12 cells, which is associated with increased MAMs formation and PERK expression within MAMs. Quercetin attenuates these changes and protects against ethanol-induced liver injury. The antiferroptotic effect of quercetin is abolished by ferroptosis inducers, but mimicked by ferroptosis inhibitors and PERK knockdown. The study demonstrates that PERK structure, rather than its kinase activity (transfected with the K618A site mutation that inhibits kinase activity-ΔK plasmid or protein C terminal knockout-ΔC plasmid of PERK), mediates the enhanced MAMs formation and ferroptosis during the ethanol exposure. CONCLUSION: Quercetin ameliorates ethanol-induced liver injury by inhibiting ferroptosis via modulating PERK-dependent MAMs formation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Serum vitamin D is associated with hyperuricemia. However, previous studies have been controversial, with limited focus on children and adolescents. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between serum vitamin D and serum uric acid (SUA) levels in children and adolescents. METHODS: The cross-sectional survey comprised 4777 participants aged 6 to 18 years, while the longitudinal survey involved 1641 participants aged 6 to 12 years, all derived from an ongoing cohort study in Shenzhen, China. Restricted cubic splines were used to visualize the dose-response relationship between vitamin D and SUA and the risk of higher SUA status. Two-segment generalized linear models (GLM) and logistic models were used to assess the association between vitamin D and SUA and higher SUA status, respectively. The longitudinal analysis used GLM. RESULTS: We observed an inverted U-shaped relationship between vitamin D and SUA (p-overall < 0.0001, p-nonlinear = 0.0002), as well as the risk of higher SUA status (p-overall = 0.0054, p-nonlinear = 0.0015), with the vitamin D inflection point at 24.31 and 21.29 ng/mL, respectively. A 10 ng/mL increment in 25(OH)D3 levels, when below 20.92 ng/mL, was associated with a 68% rise in the risk of higher SUA status (OR: 1.68, 95%CI: 1.07-2.66). Conversely, when 25(OH)D3 levels were above or equal to 20.92 ng/mL, a 10 ng/mL increment was associated with a 45% reduction risk of higher SUA status (OR: 0.55, 95%CI: 0.36-0.84). Longitudinal analysis indicated that the annual change of SUA was from -4.80 (ß, 95%CI: -10.74, 1.13) to -9.00 (ß, 95%CI: -15.03, -2.99) and then to -6.77 (ß, 95%CI: -12.83, -0.71, p for trend = 0.0212) µmol/L when increasing the quartile of vitamin D3. CONCLUSIONS: An inverse U-shaped relationship was observed between vitamin D and SUA as well as the risk of higher SUA status. Sufficient vitamin D levels appear to play a preventative role against the age-related increase in SUA. Ensuring adequate vitamin D levels may be beneficial in improving uric acid metabolism.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The relationship between sugar-free beverage (SFB) intake and childhood obesity among Chinese children is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To describe the status of SFB consumption among children and adolescents in China and assess the association between SFB intake and different types of obesity. METHODS: The study was based on the baseline data of an ongoing cohort project named Evaluation and Monitoring on School-based Nutrition and Growth in Shenzhen (EMSNGS). Food frequency questionnaires were used to collect information on SFB consumption in 3227 students aged 9-17. Physical and clinical examinations were conducted by trained investigators and clinicians. Multivariable binary logistic regression models were performed to assess the association between SFB intake and general obesity, overweight/obesity, abdominal obesity, metabolically unhealthy overweight (MUOW)/metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO). RESULTS: The median age of the participants was 13.28 years. Among the participants, 55.2% were boys, and 66.1% were adolescents. The median SFB consumption was 16.67 mL/d. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, each 100 mL increase in daily SFB intake was associated with an increased risk of overweight/obesity (OR = 1.14; 95%CI: 1.06-1.23), abdominal obesity (OR = 1.12; 95%CI: 1.03-1.23), and MUOW/MUO (OR = 1.12; 95%CI: 1.02-1.21), respectively. Stratified analyses showed that family income may have an impact on the association between SFB intake and overweight/obesity (P for interaction = 0.021) and abdominal obesity (P for interaction = 0.031). CONCLUSION: SFB intake was positively associated with childhood obesity in Chinese children, particularly among individuals with high-income families.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene fusion occurs in approximately 3% to 7% of nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC), in which occurs approximately 23% to 31% of brain metastasis patients in poor prognosis. ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitors have shown efficacy in treating ALK-positive (ALK+) NSCLC. More than 90 distinct subtypes of ALK fusions have been identified through sequencing technique and would lead to significant differences in clinical efficacy, it is necessary to guide clinical treatment effectively by gene detection. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 56-year-old nonsmoking female admitted to hospital due to cough, expectoration, and chest pain. Chest computed tomography revealed a space-occupying lesion in the upper left lobe (5.0 cm × 2.4 cm × 2.9 cm), multiple enlarged lymph nodes in mediastinum 3A and 5 (largest size 1.5 cm × 1.4 cm), and evidence of thoracic vertebral metastasis, brain magnetic resonance imaging also showed brain metastasis. DIAGNOSES: Lung adenocarcinoma with brain metastasis. INTERVENTIONS: The patient initially received conventional first-line chemotherapy, which led to a deteriorated condition. Blood-base liquid biopsy by next-generation sequencing resulted in double ALK fusions, in which with a neo-partner of lncRNA (LOC399815-ALK). Following subsequent treatment with Alectinib and stereotactic radiotherapy (CyberKnife) was subsequently employed to manage the brain metastatic lesions, resulting in a substantial decreased in both the number and size of tumor lesions. OUTCOMES: The patient's response to therapy efficacy resulted in a substantial decreased in both the number and size of tumor lesions that assessed comprehensively evaluated through computed tomography imaging and ctDNA sequencing. Patient's condition has been under control for over 29 months. CONCLUSION: Liquid biopsy may reveal the rare fusion forms of ALK, precisely guiding personalized treatment, and providing a reference method for longitudinal monitoring and efficacy evaluation of ALK-tyrosine kinase inhibitors in NSCLC patients.

RESUMO

Background: Vitamin D plays a crucial role in bone health; however, findings in children and adolescents remain inconsistent, and few studies have examined its impact on bone health measured by quantitative ultrasound (QUS). This study aims at assessing the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and bone health, as evaluated by QUS, across varying pubertal stages and genders. Methods: A baseline cross-sectional survey of an ongoing cohort study included 4682 children and adolescents aged 6 to 18 years from Shenzhen, China. Serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), which is the sum of 25(OH)D2 and 25(OH)D3, were quantified using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Bone health was measured through calcaneal QUS, utilizing the speed of sound (SOS) in the heel as a principal measure-a higher SOS indicating a denser bone structure. Generalized linear models were used to evaluate the association of serum 25(OH)D, 25(OH)D2, and 25(OH)D3 levels with the SOS. Results: Forty-one point-one percent of this population was vitamin D deficient (serum 25(OH)D < 20 ng ml-1), with only 11.1% being sufficient. In the fully adjusted model, we observed a significant positive association between increased serum 25(OH)D quartiles and SOS. Compared with the participants in the lowest quartiles of serum 25(OH)D, those in successive quartiles of 25(OH)D were 3.54 (95% CI: 0.81, 6.28) m s-1, 5.74 (95% CI: 2.87, 8.61) m s-1, and 8.83 (95% CI: 5.83, 11.84) m s-1, respectively (P for trend < 0.0001). The correlations observed for serum 25(OH)D2 and 25(OH)D3 with SOS were similar to those of serum 25(OH)D. Importantly, this association was primarily observed in post-pubertal children and adolescents but was absent in pre- and mid-pubertal participants (P for interaction = 0.0004). Conclusion: Elevated serum 25(OH)D levels were associated with better bone health, as measured through calcaneal QUS, in children and adolescents, particularly among those who had reached the post-pubertal stage. These findings highlight the crucial importance of maintaining sufficient vitamin D levels to support optimal bone health in this demographic.

RESUMO

Background: Genetic and environmental factors contribute to psoriasis, but the impact of residential environments on this condition remains uncertain. We aimed to investigate the association of residential environments with psoriasis risk and explore its interaction with genes. Methods: We retrieved data on the spatial distribution of residential environments at 300 and 1000 m buffer zones from the UK Biobank, including the proportions of natural environments, domestic gardens, green spaces, and blue spaces within these zones. We then used Cox hazard models to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the associations between residential environments and psoriasis risk. Lastly, we constructed polygenic risk scores to determine genetic susceptibility and further analyse the interaction with residential environments. Results: Overall, 3755 incident cases of psoriasis were documented during a median follow-up of 12.45 years. Compared with the lowest exposure quantile (Q1), Q4 exposure to natural environments (1000 m buffer: HR = 1.16, 95% CI = 1.05-1.29; 300 m buffer: HR = 1.12, 95% CI = 1.02-1.24) and green spaces (1000 m buffer: HR = 1.16, 95% CI = 1.04-1.28; 300m buffer: HR = 1.10, 95% CI = 1.00-1.21) increased the risk of psoriasis, while Q4 exposure to domestic gardens (1000 m buffer: HR = 0.85, 95% CI = 0.77-0.93; 300m buffer: HR = 0.91, 95% CI = 0.83-1.00) and Q3 exposure to blue spaces (1000 m buffer: HR = 0.89, 95% CI = 0.81-0.98) were negatively associated with psoriasis risk. Among participants with a high genetic risk, those exposed to high levels of natural environments (1000 m buffer: HR = 1.49, 95% CI = 1.15-1.93; 300 m buffer: HR = 1.39, 95% CI = 1.10-1.77) and green spaces (300 m buffer: HR = 1.30, 95% CI = 1.04-1.64) had a higher risk of psoriasis, while those exposed to blue spaces (1000 m buffer: HR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.63-0.98) had a lower risk of psoriasis. We also observed joint effects of genetic risk and residential environments and an antagonistic additive interaction between blue spaces and genetic risk (P = 0.011). Conclusions: We observed that residing in natural environments and green areas increased the risk of psoriasis in our sample, while proximity to blue spaces and domestic gardens was associated to reduced risks. The association of residential environments with psoriasis risk was modified by genetic susceptibility.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent form of dementia worldwide as a cryptic neurodegenerative disease. The symptoms of AD will last for several years, which brings great mental and economic burden to patients and their families. Unfortunately, the complete cure of AD still faces great challenges. Therefore, it is crucial to diagnose the disease in the early stage. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Visual Geometry Group (VGG) network serves as the backbone for feature extraction, which could reduce the time cost of network training to a certain extent. In order to better extract image information and pay attention to the association information in the images, the group convolutional module and the multi-scale RNN-based feature selection module are proposed. The dataset employed in the study are drawn from [18F]FDG-PET images within the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database. RESULTS: Comprehensive experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms several competing approaches in AD-related diagnostic tasks. In addition, the model reduces the number of parameters of the model compared to the backbone model, from 134.27 M to 17.36 M. Furthermore, the ablation reaserch is conducted to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed module. CONCLUSIONS: The paper introduces a lightweight network architecture for the early diagnosis of AD. In contrast to analogous methodologies, the proposed method yields acceptable results.

RESUMO

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition that can impact the central nervous system (CNS) and cause damage to the myelin, which is responsible for facilitating the normal transmission of electrical impulses along the nerves. We performed a bibliometric analysis of the scientific publications on myelin imaging in MS to reveal the development trends in this field and to evaluate research trends in myelin imaging in MS. Methods: The Web of Science Core Collection was searched for articles related to myelin imaging in MS published between January 2000 and December 2022. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and R language were used to evaluate and visualize contributions by and co-occurrence relationships among countries and institutions, authors, journals, citations, keywords, and so on. Results: A total of 1,639 articles addressed the topic of myelin imaging in MS. The United States had the largest number of annual publications. The University of London was the institution with the highest number of publications (n=118) and citations (n=9,885). The top 3 productive authors were all from the University of British Columbia in Canada. An article published by Mackay et al. in 1994 had the most citations (n=272). Neuroimage [impact factor (IF) =7.40, Journal Citation Reports quartile 1 (Q1)] was the most productive journal in terms of the number of articles relating to myelin imaging in MS (n=149). In recent years, myelin water imaging, synthetic magnetic resonance imaging (SyMRI), inhomogeneous magnetization, positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, and aquaporin-4 (AQP4) have been researched hotspots of myelin imaging in MS. Conclusions: With advancements in the pathophysiological research on myelin changes in MS, myelin imaging is playing an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of MS. In addition, the use of new sequences of myelin imaging to distinguish MS from other inflammatory demyelinating diseases is a future development trend in this field.
