RESUMO

Despite numerous clinical trials and pre-clinical developments, the diagnosis of cracked tooth, especially in the early stages, remains a challenge. Cracked tooth syndrome is often accompanied by dramatic painful responses from occlusion and temperature stimulation, which has become one of the leading causes for tooth loss in adults. Current clinical diagnostical approaches for cracked tooth have been widely investigated based on X-rays, optical light, ultrasound wave, etc. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) development have unlocked the possibility of detecting the crack in a more intellectual and automotive way. This may lead to the possibility of further enhancement of the diagnostic accuracy for cracked tooth disease. In this review, various medical imaging technologies for diagnosing cracked tooth are overviewed. In particular, the imaging modality, effect and the advantages of each diagnostic technique are discussed. What's more, AI-based crack detection and classification methods, especially the convolutional neural network (CNN)-based algorithms, including image classification (AlexNet), object detection (YOLO, Faster-RCNN), semantic segmentation (U-Net, Segnet) are comprehensively reviewed. Finally, the future perspectives and challenges in the diagnosis of the cracked tooth are lighted.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Early clinical cracked tooth can be a perplexing disorder to diagnose and manage. One of the key problems for the diagnosis of the cracked tooth is the detection of the location of the surface crack. METHODS: This paper proposes an image-based method for the detection of the micro-crack in the simulated cracked tooth. A homemade three-axis motion platform mounted with a telecentric lens was built as an image acquisition system to observe the surface of the simulated cracked tooth, which was under compression with a magnitude of the masticatory force. By using digital image correlation (DIC), the deformation map for the crown surface of the cracked tooth was calculated. Through image analysis, the micro-crack was quantitatively visualized and characterized. RESULTS: The skeleton of the crack path was successfully extracted from the image of the principal strain field, which was further verified by the image from micro-CT. Based on crack kinematics, the crack opening displacement was quantitatively calculated to be 2-10 µm under the normal mastication stress, which was in good agreement with the value reported in the literature. CONCLUSIONS: The crack on the surface of the simulated cracked tooth could be detected based on the proposed DIC-based method. The proposed method may provide a new solution for the rapid clinical diagnosis of cracked teeth and the calculated crack information would be helpful for the subsequent clinical treatment of cracked teeth.

RESUMO

Background and Objective: Transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a serious condition that is often called a warning stroke. The risk of cerebral infarction in patients with TIA and positive DWI findings is greater than that in patients with TIA and normal DWI findings. Butylphthalide injection is a new type of brain protective drug. The study aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of butylphthalide injection for treating TIA as shown by DWI abnormality progressing to infarction. Methods: We studied 98 patients with positive DWI findings among 260 patients with TIA, and randomly divided into the experimental (treatment with butylphthalide injection) and control (treatment with aspirin) groups. The number of cerebral infarctions in the two groups was recorded on 7th, 14th, 30th and 90th day, and adverse reactions were observed. The number of cerebral infarctions was compared among the different ABCD2 scores of patients with TIA and positive DWI findings. Results: The incidence of cerebral infarction in the experimental group was significantly lower than that in the control group (p < .05). The incidence of cerebral infarction with an ABCD2 score less than 3 points was significantly lower than that with an ABCD2 score of more than 3 points (p < .05), with less adverse reactions. Conclusion: Butylphthalide injection is helpful and safe for preventing stroke following TIA, and treating TIA with positive DWI and progression to infarction.

RESUMO

Aims: Extracellular vesicles from Lacticaseibacillus paracasei PC-H1 have antiproliferative activity of colon cells, but the effect on glycolytic metabolism of cancer cell remains enigmatic. The authors investigated how Lacticaseibacillus paracasei extracellular vesicles (LpEVs) inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells by affecting tumor metabolism. Materials & methods: HCT116 cells were treated with LpEVs and then differentially expressed genes were analyzed by transcriptome sequencing, the sequencing results were confirmed in vivo and in vitro. Results: LpEVs entered colon cancer cells and inhibited their growth. Transcriptome sequencing revealed differentially expressed genes were related to glycolysis. Lactate production, glucose uptake and lactate dehydrogenase activity were significantly reduced after treatment. LpEVs also reduced HIF-1α, GLUT1 and LDHA expression. Conclusion: LpEVs exert their antiproliferative activity of colon cancer cells by decreasing HIF-1α-mediated glycolysis.

RESUMO

Harmony search (HS) is a new swarm intelligent algorithm inspired by the process of music improvisation. Over the past decade, HS algorithm has been applied to many practical engineering problems. However, for some complex practical problems, there are some remaining issues such as premature convergence, low optimization accuracy and slow convergence speed. To address these issues, this paper proposes a novel intelligent global harmony search algorithm based on improved search stability strategy (NIGHS). In the search process, NIGHS uses the adaptive mean of harmony memory library to build a stable trust region around the global best harmony, and proposes a new coupling operation based on linear proportional relation, so that the algorithm can adaptively adjust the ability of exploration and exploitation in the search process and avoid premature convergence. In addition, the dynamic Gauss fine-tuning is adopted in the stable trust region to accelerate the convergence speed and improve the optimization accuracy. The common CEC2017 test functions are employed to test the proposed algorithm, the results show that NIGHS algorithm has a faster convergence speed and better optimization accuracy compared to the HS algorithm and its improved versions.

RESUMO

This paper develops a Neural Network (NN) event-triggered finite-time consensus control method for uncertain nonlinear Multi-Agent Systems (MASs) with dead-zone input and actuator failures. In practical applications, actuator failures would inevitably arise in MASs. And the time, pattern, and value of the failures are unknown. Besides, the actuators of MASs also suffer from dead-zone nonlinearity. No matter actuator failures or dead-zone input would dramatically affect the performance and stability of MASs. To address these issues, finite-time adaptive controllers capable of simultaneously compensating for actuator failures and dead-zone input are constructed by adopting the backstepping technology. Meanwhile, the NN control scheme is adopted to handle the unknown nonlinear dynamics of each agent. Furthermore, an event-triggered control mechanism is established that no longer requires continuous communication on the control network. Under the proposed control method, all followers achieve finite-time synchronization, irrespective of the presence of limited bandwidth, unknown failures, and dead-zone input. These results are demonstrated by simulations.

RESUMO

Aiming at a class of uncertain nonlinear multi-agent systems (MASs) with full-state constraints and actuator failures, a finite-time consensus control method is developed. Full-state constraints and actuator failures are ubiquitous in practical engineering applications. Violation of constraints would drastically affect the performance of MASs, even arise security problems. It is challenging to guarantee the performance of the MASs when undergoing actuator failures. To tackle these problems, an adaptive consensus control method is established by applying the Backstepping technique and Barrier Lyapunov functions (BLFs) to ensure the performance of the MASs with full-state constraints no matter actuator failures occur. Simultaneously, for the uncertain nonlinear MASs, a finite-time neural network (NN) consensus control scheme is established to ensure system's signals are synchronized in finite time. Moreover, an event-triggered control strategy is constructed to relieve the communication pressure of each agent. Finally, numerical and practical examples are employed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

RESUMO

The off-the-shelf small-diameter vascular grafts (SDVGs) have inferior clinical efficacy. Red blood cell membrane (Rm) has easy availability and multiple bioactive components (such as phospholipids, proteins, and glycoproteins), which can improve the clinic's availability and patency of SDVGs. Here we developed a facile approach to preparing an Rm-functionalized poly-ε-caprolactone/poly-d-lysine (Rm@PCL/PDL) tube by co-incubation and single-step rolling. The integrity, stability, and bioactivity of Rm on Rm@PCL/PDL were evaluated. The revascularization of Rm@PCL/PDL tubes was studied by implantation in the carotid artery of rabbits. Rm@PCL/PDL can be quickly prepared and showed excellent bioactivity with good hemocompatibility and great anti-inflammatory. Rm@PCL/PDL tubes as the substitute for the carotid artery of rabbits had good patency and quick remodeling within 21 days. Rm, as a "self" biomaterial with high biosafety, provides a new and facile approach to developing personalized or universal SDVGs for the clinic, which is of great significance in cardiovascular regenerative medicine and organ chip.

RESUMO

As a classic remedy for treating Osteoarthritis (OA), Duhuo Jisheng decoction has successfully treated countless patients. Nevertheless, its specific mechanism is unknown. This study explored the active constituents of Duhuo Jisheng decoction and the potential molecular mechanisms for treating OA using a Network Pharmacology approaches. Screening active components and corresponding targets of Duhuo parasite decoction by traditional Chinese medicine systems pharmacology database and analysis platform database. Combining the following databases yielded OA disease targets: GeneCards, DrugBank, PharmGkb, Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man, and therapeutic target database. The interaction analysis of the herb-active ingredient-core target network and protein-protein interaction protein network was constructed by STRING platform and Cytoscape software. Gene ontology functional enrichment analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analysis were carried out. PyMOL and other software were used to verify the molecular docking between the essential active components and the core target. 262 active ingredients were screened, and their main components were quercetin, kaempferol, wogonin, baicalein, and beta-carotene. 108 intersection targets of disease and drug were identified, and their main components were RELA, FOS, STAT3, MAPK14, MAPK1, JUN, and ESR1. Gene ontology analysis showed that the key targets were mainly involved in biological processes such as response to lipopolysaccharide, response to xenobiotic stimulus, and response to nutrient levels. The results of Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis show that the signal pathways include the AGE - RAGE signaling pathway, IL - 17 signaling pathway, TNF signaling pathway, and Toll - like receptor signaling pathway. Molecular docking showed that the main active components of Duhuo parasitic decoction had a good bonding activity with the key targets in treating OA. Duhuo Jisheng decoction can reduce the immune-inflammatory reaction, inhibit apoptosis of chondrocytes, strengthen proliferation and repair of chondrocytes and reduce the inflammatory response in a multi-component-multi-target-multi-pathway way to play a role in the treatment of OA.

RESUMO

Nanocellulose (NC), including cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), and bacterial cellulose (BC), has attracted a great deal of attention as a green packaging material. NC can protect food from pathogen adhesion and can be degraded by microorganisms after being discarded. In this review, we introduce preparations of NC-based film, including layer by layer (LbL) assembly, electrospinning, coating, extrusion, casting, vacuum filtration, and immersion. We summarize the interaction between microorganisms and NC, and focused on the impact of NC on microbial adhesion to surfaces and the influence of microorganisms on degradation of NC-based film. We put forward the challenges of NC faces in packaging, such as hydrophobicity, antibacterial properties, and industrialization. We finally propose future perspectives of NC-based film as the packaging material.

RESUMO

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common malignant tumor in the world. Previous research has shown that Lacticaseibacillus paracasei strains and its cultures have anti-colon cancer effects, but the study of L. paracasei-derived extracellular vesicles (LpEVs) as intercellular communication molecule against colon cancer has not been previously reported. Our research showed LpEVs were taken in by colorectal cancer cells. Subsequently, LpEVs inhibited the proliferation, migration, invasion and promote apoptosis of colorectal cancer cells. LpEVs inhibited the growth of CRC xenograft in nude mice and promoted tumor apoptosis in vivo. Transcriptome sequencing analysis revealed that differentially expressed genes were involved in the regulation of apoptosis. LpEVs significantly inhibited the phosphorylation level of 3-phosphoinositide-dependent protein kinase-1 (PDK1) and AKT in colorectal cancer cells and reduced the expression of Bcl-2 protein. In conclusion, extracellular vesicles of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei PC-H1 can inhibit the growth of colorectal cancer cells in vivo and vitro and induce apoptosis through PDK1/AKT/Bcl-2 signaling pathway. This research not only provides a new mechanism for the anti-tumor effects of probiotics, but also opens up new opportunity for the treatment of colon cancer.

RESUMO

This article develops an adaptive neural-network (NN) boundary control scheme for a flexible manipulator subject to input constraints, model uncertainties, and external disturbances. First, a radial basis function NN method is utilized to tackle the unknown input saturations, dead zones, and model uncertainties. Then, based on the backstepping approach, two adaptive NN boundary controllers with update laws are employed to stabilize the like-position loop subsystem and like-posture loop subsystem, respectively. With the introduced control laws, the uniform ultimate boundedness of the deflection and angle tracking errors for the flexible manipulator are guaranteed. Finally, the control performance of the developed control technique is examined by a numerical example.

RESUMO

This article investigates a fuzzy adaptive two-bit-triggered control for uncertain nonlinear systems with actuator failures and dead-zone constraint. Actuator failures and dead-zone constraint exist frequently in practical systems, which will affect the system performance greatly. Based on the improved fuzzy-logic systems (FLSs), a fuzzy adaptive compensation control is established to address these issues. The approximation error is introduced to the control design as a time-varying function. In addition, for the limited transmission resources of the practical system, a two-bit-triggered control mechanism is proposed to further save system transmission resources. It is proved that the proposed method can guarantee the system tracking performance and all the signals are bounded. Its effectiveness is verified by the simulation examples.

RESUMO

Although Miura origami has excellent planar expansion characteristics and good mechanical properties, its congenital flaws, e.g., open sections leading to weak out-of-plane stiffness and constituting the homogenization of the material, and resulting in limited design freedom, should also be taken seriously. Herein, two identical Miura sheets, made of carbon fiber/epoxy resin composite, were bonded to form a tubular structure with closed sections, i.e., an origami tube. Subsequently, the dynamic performances, including the nature frequency and the dynamic displacement response, of the designed origami tubes were extensively investigated through numerical simulations. The outcomes revealed that the natural frequency and corresponding dynamic displacement response of the structure can be adjusted in a larger range by varying the geometric and material parameters, which is realized by combining origami techniques and the composite structures' characteristics. This work can provide new ideas for the design of light-weight and high-mechanical-performance structures.

RESUMO

Antibiotic abuse resulted in the emergence of multidrug-resistant Gram-positive pathogens, which pose a severe threat to public health. It is urgent to develop antibiotic substitutes to kill multidrug-resistant Gram-positive pathogens effectively. Herein, the antibacterial dialdehyde nanocrystalline cellulose (DNC) was prepared and characterized. The antibacterial activity and biosafety of DNC were studied. With the increasing content of aldehyde groups, DNC exhibited high antibacterial activity against Gram-positive pathogens in vitro. DNC3 significantly reduced the amounts of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) on the skin of infected mice models, which showed low cytotoxicity, excellent skin compatibility, and no acute oral toxicity. DNC exhibited potentials as antibiotic substitutes to fight against multidrug-resistant bacteria, such as ingredients in salves to treat skin infection and other on-skin applications.

RESUMO

Small-diameter vascular grafts (inner diameter < 6 mm) are useful in treating cardiovascular diseases. The off-the-shelf small-diameter vascular grafts for clinical applications remain a great limitation owing to their thrombogenicity or intimal hyperplasia. Herein, bilayer anticoagulant hydrogel tubes with poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) sheaths are prepared by freeze-thawing and electrospinning, which contain nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-heparin/poly-L-lysine nanoparticles tube as an inner layer and PCL sheath as an outer layer. The structure, anticoagulant property, and biocompatibility of the inner layer are studied. The effects of thickness of the outer layer on perfusion performance and mechanical property of hydrogel tubes with PCL sheaths (PCL-NFC/PVA-NPs tubes) are investigated. The effect of compliance of PCL-NFC/PVA-NPs tubes on their blood flow is studied by numerical simulation. The tissue compatibility and the patency of PCL-NFC/PVA-NPs tubes are evaluated by implantation in subcutaneous tissue of rats and carotid artery of rabbits. PCL-NFC/PVA-NPs tubes have prominent anticoagulation, sufficient burst pressure and good compliance similar to native arteries. PCL-NFC/PVA-NPs tubes facilitate infiltration of host cells and achieve active proliferation of recruited cells, which will be a promising candidate for small-diameter vascular grafts.

RESUMO

A phase change heat sink has higher heat transfer efficiency compared to a traditional metal solid heat sink, and is thus more preferred for the heat dissipation of high-power light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with very high heat flux. The boiling structure at the evaporation surface is the biggest factor that affects heat sink resistance. It is necessary to investigate the plastic deformation law during the machining process of boiling structures. In this study, a novel phase change radial heat sink was developed for high-power LED heat dissipation. First, a working principle and a fabrication process for the heat sink were introduced. Subsequently, to achieve an excellent heat dissipation performance, the machining process of boiling structures was numerically simulated and investigated. To be specific, plastic deformation generated during the formation was analyzed, and key parameters related to the morphology of the boiling structures were discussed including feeding angles and machining depths. Moreover, the finite element (FE) simulation results were compared with those of experiments. Last but not least, the heat transfer performance of the fabricated heat sink was tested. Results showed that the developed heat sink was well suited for a high-power LED application.

RESUMO

Transient ischemic attack (TIA) is often recurrent, and about one-third of patients will progress to cerebral infarction. Rapidly identifying high-risk patients is pivotal to prevent the development of cerebral infarction. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the value of ABCD score, ABCD score combined with magnetic resonance diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) and intracranial arterial magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) in predicting cerebral infarction after 2 to 30 days of transient ischemic attack (TIA).182 patients with TIA from August 2011 to August 2014 were enrolled as study subjects, and their clinical data, test results of DWI and MRA were collected. The incidence of cerebral infarction was observed at 2 days, 7 days and 30 days after TIA in patients with TIA, through scoring according to the 7-point ABCD score method proposed by Johnston. The relationship between ABCD score, performances of DWI and MRA and the early incidence of cerebral infarction after TIA was analyzed. The accuracy rating of ABCD score and ABCD + DWI + MRA score used for predicting the early incidence of cerebral infarction after TIA were compared with each other. The incidence of cerebral infarction after TIA was 19 cases (10.4%) in 2 days, 42 cases (23.1%) in 7 days, 56 cases (30.8%) in 30 days respectively. For the ABCD score of incidence of cerebral infarction 2 to 30 days after TIA, that of those with high risk was higher than that with medium risk, and that with the medium risk was higher than that with low risk (P < .05). The area under the curve of ABCD + DWI + MRA score and ABCD score predicting the incidence of cerebral infarction was: in 2 days: 0.782 and 0.748, in 7 days: 0.839 and 0.801, in 30 days: 0.780 and 0.757, P < .05.Compared with ABCD score, ABCD score combined with DWI and MRA can further improve the accuracy of prediction for cerebral infarction after TIA.

RESUMO

Intimal hyperplasia (IH) in vein grafts (VGs) is a major issue in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. Although external stents can attenuate IH of VGs to some extent, none of the existing external stents have shown satisfactory clinical outcomes. Here we develop a flexible, biodegradable, and conductive external metal-polymer conductor stent (MPCS) that can electroporate the vessel wall and produce a protein that prevents IH. We designed the plasmid DNA encoding the tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-3 (TIMP-3) and lyophilized it on the inner surface of the MPCS to deliver into the adventitia and the middle layer of VGs for gene therapy. Coupled with its continuous mechanical support to prevent dilation after implanting, the MPCS can inhibit the IH of VGs significantly in the rabbit model. This proof-of-concept demonstration may aid the development of other implantable bioelectronics for electroporation gene therapy.

RESUMO

Thermal management is crucial to guarantee the normal operation of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) Phase change heat sink is superior to traditional metal solid heat sink due to very small thermal resistance. In this study, a new type of phase change heat sink for high power LEDs is first designed. Then, the fabrication process of boiling structures at the evaporation surface of the phase change heat sink is discussed and analyzed. To make a comparison and deep discussion, the machining process is simulated through the FEM (finite element analysis) software, DEFORM-3D. Last but not least, heat transfer performance of the fabricated phase change heat sink is tested. Results have shown that the designed new type of phase change heat sink has superior heat transfer performance and is suitable for heat dissipation of high-power LEDs.
